Important Character Announcement!

One of my favorite things here on the Plaza has been not to just create characters that are fun and unique but are also challenging and engaging. I’ve had so many opportunities since rejoining a little over a year ago now to invest in and create a world that I can see myself and those I love reflected in it. I get that opportunity every single day, every single post. I have been so lucky, so fortunate to be able to explore parts of myself and explore parts of the world around me. I am constantly learning, constantly growing, constantly looking to challenge myself and my beliefs.

The diversity within the Plaza is something that I am proud to contribute to. On the old days of the original plaza, so many of the ideas, characters, and stories I am able to tell would not be possible. Either from external or internal roadblocks, the world I wanted to see just couldn’t shine through. But those days are over and gone. Those days of not getting to fully express myself are gone. I can, instead of trying to hide or code messages and characters a certain way, be as wide and diverse as I can. And that is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

To wit, after some long conversations with @Tarawen about the kind of diversity we both want to see and explore here on the Plaza, we’ve come to a conclusion and with her blessings, I get to tell you all today something new about Frost and Zôr.

They’re both genderfluid!

The idea to do a genderflipped story at the ARPYs was originally just a fresh way to explore and interact, inspired by Adventure Time. However, as we continued to write the characters we noticed that in their genderflipped states there were subtle (and not so subtle) differences in how we portrayed them. We want to continue to explore what the means. Loki, at long last, has finally been confirmed to be genderfluid in the MCU. Anyone who knows anything about Loki though, either in comics or mythology, already knew this about him. Still, having it confirmed (albeit in a blink and you’ll miss it fashion) was incredibly important. It was a tiny step, but an important step towards greater diversity and equality. To that end, both Tara and I want to explore what it means for Frost and Zôr, our favorite characters, to be genderfluid, to explore new kinds of stories, stories we didn’t think we could write, emotions and arcs and angles we didn’t know or didn’t imagine we could write about and learn from.

Now, to make sure you, our dear readers, don't get confused by what you're reading as you come on this journey with us, rest assured we will have all the icons you could need to know which version of which characters is being written. Depending on the stories they might stay one gender throughout or they might flip flop between posts, don't worry though, we've got you covered so you know who's who.

I won’t speak for Tara (though I’m quite certain she’d agree) this is an incredible opportunity and I am beyond excited to show you all a thousand more facets to a character that you all loved enough to vote as “Best Character” (something I still don’t understand but at least it wasn’t Fleeg). Stay tuned, things are about to get… mischievous! :evilgayblinky:

:heartrainbow: OMG! :heartrainbow: I am beyond happy to hear this!

I think I gushed how I love femme!Frost so much, I might even like her a smidgen bit more than regular Frost. So I am beyond excited to see how you will portray genderfluid Frost in a ME setting! And also a genderfluid Zôr. You and @Tarawen are such creative writers when it comes to these topics and I can only be awed as you show us the range of your creativity. I can't wait to see how you will sort this out in a story (side note: this now reminded me of the Gender Key from the graphic novel Locke and Key).

P.S. I'm still offended that Fleeg didn't win Best character. I rooted for him!

Wooooo!!! :heartrainbow:

I echo all you've said and want to say how happy I am that this new iteration of the Plaza has been a safe space for you to explore and create the characters and world you envision. It's certainly been the same for me and I hope that others feel that difference from Old Plaza, too.

I also want to name that while neither of us identifies as genderfluid in real life, we intend to do our due diligence to develop the characters with integrity and respect for genderfluid folks. Speaking for myself here - if at any point something about how I'm writing Zôr doesn't sit well with folks' lived experiences or could be better, I welcome that feedback and would like to learn from it.

I have had so much fun writing these two together since the humblest "yes, and..." beginnings of Frost and Zôr interacting. This new element of their identities has already been a treat to write and I'm so excited to continue exploring and developing them with you!!

Osa

Osa is the best bear. That’s really all that needs to be said about her. She is a golden moon bear (a real kind of bear out in the real world) who was born in the far east of Middle-Earth but migrated to the more familiar forests of Lothlórien, Northern Mirkwood, and Fangorn after hunters and wildfires drove her from the lush temperate rainforests she had called home. Arriving in Lothlórien, Osa found that the people and elves of the region much more to her liking. They allowed her to make her home in the large mallorn trees and let her live in peace. However, as Osa began to grow up, a mischievous streak began to manifest itself. She would often wander into gardens and orchards and pilfer fruits and vegetables meant for the elves. More often than not, Osa would recruit members of her forest community (in Lothlórien, Fangorn, and Northern Mirkwood) into her capers with varying degrees of success. It was all this bad behavior that got the attention of Beorn. He caught her trying to steal his honeycakes one day and decided that enough was enough. Knowing that it would be impossible to keep her from mischief completely, he did try to find ways to curtail it or use it to create something positive, rather than chaos and uproar (the latter being the case when she stole managed to steal an entire shipment of Old Dorwinion from the Halls of Thranduil). He has allowed her to steal things, but she has to tell him about them, making sure he can keep track of where she is and what she’s doing (and hopefully shaming some of her more outrageous capers). Ostensibly, she’s “employed” at his Bar-Bearian Pub, but she often gets into more trouble there by doing nothing he tells her to do. Eyes always on the prize, Osa continues to look for the greatest caper of them all and a team to help her pull it off.

Story Arcs

Osa and the Case of the King’s Wine: the story of Osa’s daring escapade into the Woodland Realm where she makes off with the King’s own wine stash

Osa and the Case of the Great Honey Tree: the story of Osa climbing the giant honey tree for the greatest treat of all

Osa and the Case of the Vampire Leprechaun: the story of Osa meeting a strange person in the woods

Osa and the Case of the Mysterious Box: the story Osa stealing a box, but what’s inside it?

Angathfund

Angathfund, born Sirimir, was a minor Silvan noble in the court of Thranduil, born in the first millennium of the Third Age. He grew up idolizing and looking up to Gellam, the king’s Fool. For many years, they were friend, though Sirimir despite the perceived difference in nobility between the two. When the Shadow began to follow over the Greenwood, Sirimir was fearless and urged others to explore it rather than run from it. He believed, wrongly, that it was simply the course of nature, the direction the world of Arda was going. He realized he was wrong though, when he came face to face with the Necromancer. Seeing the power he could have under his tutelage, Sirimir gave himself over to the power of the Necromancer who twisted and remolded him into a weapon aimed at the heart of the Woodland Realm. He gave himself a new name: Angathfund, the Ghost of Perdition. He worked both secretly and opening, undermining the authority of the elvenking until at least, he attempted a coup against those that would not follow him into the embrace of the Shadow. He and his rebels were cast out and drive back to Dol Guldur. Nursing his wounds, both physical and emotional, Angathfund was visited by something else. A power of Loneliness entered into him. He became withdrawn, reclusive, and standoffish but seemed to have acquired a new array of powers. Still, he continued to work to further the Dark Lord’s influence in Mirkwood, as it was now called. He met with the spider descendants of Carníheniel and worked on a truce with them to populate the forest and fill it with webs and pockets of unlight. When the Necromancer was forced to flee, it was to Angathfund the forced of the Shadow looked to lead them. He did until the coming of Khamûl and his fellow Nazgûl. Still, Angathfund was considered the de facto leader of the troops, having served for nearly two thousand years. When the Nazgûl came, however, they brought with them another elf: Moriel. Immediately, Angathfund sensed she was a threat to his undisputed administration of Dol Guldur and from the outset, did everything he could to undermine her in the eyes of the Ringwraiths and the population of the Hill of Sorcery. Finally, though, their confrontation came to a head, violently.

Story Arcs

Once Upon a Forest (working title): Gellam and Sirimir, friends (with Moriel)

Ashûkûrz: how Angathfund was found by the Lonely

Whispering in a Gale (working title): Moriel and Angathfund, rivals (with Moriel)

Wolves and Whispers: the search for Moriel begins (with Moriel)

The Twisted Ones: the desecration of the shrine to Melian

Elenarinya: the coup against the elvenking

No Dreams Breed in Breathless Sleep: Angathfund's search for one of the Lesser Rings of Power

I am very, very excited for Angathfund story arcs! And especially all the collaboration you're going to do with Moriel. :heartrainbow: Now when I think of it, you @Moriel and @Jwaein work so well together as a team of writers! It's always very enjoyable to see what you come up with next.

This is going to be a placeholder post for all the canon and canon adjacent characters I'm writing. I'm not quite sure of the format I'll use but I know I want to keep them all together in a single entry.

Two points:
1. I absolutely love how you're like "Oh I have nothing to do with these awesome stories I'm a part of, I'm just here... Existing..."
2. I demand that Sauron and his aliases get a segment of their own because you have such amazing Sauron posts all-around and they demand to be in a separate post!

Distant Lands: The Adventure Time Entries

Adventure Time and Lord of the Rings. Do they go together? On the face of it, not at all, one is quite serious with lots of literary aspirations and linguistic roots and the other is about a boy and a stretchy dog who live in a kingdom populated by sentient candy. Even such, both @Jwaein and I have embarked on a silly and (maybe) foolhardy quest to bring the two together and find a way to retell some old Adventure Time stories through the lens of Tolkien and to tell our own stories with the characters. Will we succeed? Just between us, I think we have a good chance to write some great heartwarming, silly tales.

What Have You Done?: Finn and Jake team up with Marceline the Vampire Queen to rescue the Wildberry Princess and LSP from the dreaded Ice King in the far reaches of the north

For the time being (ie until they have a significant enough posts to their name)
I will, I promised.

However, right now I don't know them well enough. They don't have enough posts to their name and their characteristics are still up in the air. The girls all deserve more than just a placeholder post with three lines of bio, a picture, and an icon. None of them even have a playlist yet (something very important to me if no one else).

I will give them their proper place, but doing so without being able to round out their experiences and their personality feels very wrong to me. I wanted them in the Archive sooner than a regular character because I really do love them all very much and wanted to show them off and compile all their unique perspectives and experiences.

Of course, no rush :grouphug: This is your archive and you should organise it in the way that makes the most sense to you. When I was looking at the Frostdóttirs stories in Frost's post section, to me, they kind of get lost in a lot of the Frost related stories. If you get what I'm trying to say? To me, Frostdóttirs are a theme (story arc) on its own, and although they are connected to Frost they are separate from him... So I thought that you would first organise them into a separate thematic unit, as Moriel did with the Fall of Thargelion, and as each of the daughters develops more and more and you get to know them better, that they would get their separate posts with story arcs, but as a theme, they would have a post of their own. Am I making sense?

You are making sense. However, I don't see the Frostdóttirs as a theme or an arc, they are characters, characters with a connection to Frost therefore I don't want to set them up as if they were something else, something less than what they deserve. Arcs have endings and none of these woman are one and done stories. Just like Walpurga, they are all going to expand and keep going.

I appreciate your input but, as I didn't ask for it, I am going to continue with the organization that I've set up because I think it works better. Also as a side note, I have stories within the Fall of Thargelion so I am very aware of the thematic unit Moriel set up.

First of all, let me apologise for what I said and how I said it. I didn't really think how my words might sound when I posted them, however, a bit after I logged out I realised that what I wrote sounded really insensitive and dumb. And that's why I reached out to you on Discord.

However, I think it's really important that I acknowledge that I was an idiot and out of line. What I wrote looks and sounds like I'm forcing my opinion on your creativity. Although, that is not at all what I meant or what I was trying to do, this isn't about what I meant or tried to say, it's about what I said and how I said it. And it was stupid and insensitive and I'm really sorry about it.

And you are right to call me out on it  and please don't ever hesitate to tell me I'm an idiot sandwich, because we all know I'm not always the sharpest crayon in the box. Also, I would like to stress that although I genuinely do like to comment on your creative work, because I really enjoy what you do, you are not obliged in any way, shape or form to listen/read my ramblings; especially if they don't fit into what you envisioned  You can always slap the feedback birb at me.

Apologies for the long and rather rambly apology, I just wanted to let you know that I'm sorry for being an insensitive turd. And next time I'll try to frame my thoughts better and we're all good here. That's it, I shall now vacate the premisses no need to kick me in the posterior

Walpurga has been kicked into gear on both "Into the Unknown" and "Dirty Paws" (watch out for a Vipsania-centric story coming soon as well)
Frost has "Storm Crows", "Dusk, and Her Embrace", "Of Stars and Smoke", and "Mama Bear" updated to current
and "What Have You Done?" has been updated with Jake the Dog and Marceline's latest post

The Hobbits

So, some characters are too small or too one-off to earn a solo spot in the Archives (for now) but I still think they deserve a chance to shine because they are all wonderful and delightful in their own way. Some of them might have been created for a specific thread or a specific story and haven't quite gotten around to getting fleshed out enough for a full entry, others were planned characters that never got introduced for one reason or another. Whatever the reason, I've felt like it was time they got their due, especially after showcasing all the goblin members of the S(hit) Kickers and accidently creating a decent format for them to be introduced (hooray for accidental genius). First up, because they are really the most wonderful and wholesome, the hobbits!

Fezziwig Willowfoot (also known as Old Fezzy) is an elderly hobbit originally hailing from Honeypuddle, a small town known for its annual Pudding Faire. He's a widower with a single child, a beloved daughter, to his name, but five grandchildren who all love and adore him. He loves a good story (especially if he's the one telling it) and knows three times as much about ale as tweens a third his age.
Originally he was created because I couldn't find my holiday favorite "Old Fezziwig Ale" last year and was quite heartbroken (yes I am being serious). He was my way of still having Fezzy in my holidays outside A Christmas Carol and have that wonderful dose of much needed positivity. I'm not sure where or what I will do with him but he is such a delight (look at that smile!) I will doubtlessly find someway to use him.

Ermengarde Brandybuck (also known as Emmy) is a tiny (a whole 14 inches tall) hobbit girl with an adventurous streak as long as the Brandywine. She loves to explore and find new places to have fun in with her imaginary friend, Humphrey the Beaver.
I made Emmy because the image I found was too damn adorable not to find a use for (ironically the image is actually of a gnome child). She's currently running about in the Farthings and Beyond thread looking for the legendary Amaranth Flower. She might fulfill a desire I have to write happy, wholesome stories that wouldn't quite fit Jorgy's personality and see the Shire through a unique lense.

Corzin Wanderfoot was never going to stay in the Shire. He was one of those weird Wanderfoots (feet?) that lived at the western end of the Shire. A lot of folks say they were far too friendly with elves and dwarves and didn't have the sense the sit for breakfast. Corzin wanted to be a sailor. As a child he would build rafts and sail down streams and imagine himself a pirate hunter. Now an adult, Corzin is ready to make to a port city and find a ship that will have him.
Corzin is a tribute character to a halfing of the same name from the Flintlocks and Fireballs D&D Podcast, one very dear to my heart. He was originally going to be the guide in an RPG I was going to run but that idea has sailed (pun intended). Where we might see Corzin next is with Finnbarr in the present day, assembling a new crew.

Acacia Wanderfoot is Corzin's older sibling. They are not the sailing type or the adventuring type. They are, however, very much botanically inclined. Their garden is said to be the most lovely outside of Master Samwise himself. They love to experiment with flowers, grafting and combining to create new colors and new combinations.
Sadly, all I really had for Acacia was they were Corzin's sibling and they were going to be nonbinary. A disservice really. I'm not sure where or how they will appear, but I am determined to find a place for them somewhere.

Deirdre Whitfoot is a hobbit lass that hates wearing dresses and hates having to learn to sew. She wants to be out on the borders defending her home and fighting goblins and wargs and all sorts of baddies. What she lacks in common sense (sewing is very useful out in the wild after all) and size, she makes up for in tenacity and heart. While her parents will always worry about her, they are bound and determined to support her. The neighbors may huff and gossip, but who cares about them when their daughter's dreams are at stake?
Deirdre came into being, well, as of right now. I found the image a few days ago and knew there was a story behind her. I don't have anything currently plotted for her yet but I am sure with her attitude she will be finding something to do.

Now that I am somewhat settled into this pseudo Texan lifestyle for now I am thinking there will be many more hobbits running around and causing consternations from the old folks

Also there are updates! Frost, Jorgy, Yoshiyo, and the Adventure Time Crew have all been updated on their stories!
