
The esteemed halls of Campian had once again been thrown open to the warm summer air. Fabled for being a neutral training-ground for warriors from all across Middle-earth, the high rafters echoed with the sounds of blades being sharpened, the thuds of weapon against padded targets, and the hearty laughter of mutual respect and comradeship. Allacan was rushing about making the final (slightly late) preparations; streaming brightly coloured festival pennants between the training dummies that circled the central arena like an expectant audience. Near bouncing with enthusiasm, stray cob-webbing still caught in the kerchief covering her uncharacteristically tousled hair (recently dyed black, it’s a new look!), she leaps onto a mounting block and claps her hands loudly for attention.
"Fine warriors and fellow combatants, welcome to Campian! Today we re-open these fabled halls for a very special event; a Tournament of Champions. The prize; a chest of prizes and the honour of being the first (and currently only) person to ever hold the title of Tournament Champion of Campian.
"Any and all who wish to compete in the melee challenge need only present themselves for inspection, choose a weapon from those provided and enter the arena in readiness. In the spirit of Campian, your loyalty or allegiance does not debar you entry, for here we are all warriors alike, bound with mutual respect and a shared appreciation for the art of combat..
"A brief reminder of the rules; only blunted and dulled weapons provided here may be used within the arena, including slow-flight padded arrows or crossbows if you wish. No intentional head-shots or potentially lethal attacks are permitted, and you fight to the yield. Healers are at hand in the event of an accident, as are a number of 'adjudicators' in the event of rule-breaking. Good luck!"
The mechanics look complicated and scary I know, but honestly you don't need to read them all (13, 14 and 15 are the important ones, the rest are just boring ref stuff). In simple terms, each round you roleplay two attacks and one defence. You can attack the same person twice, or two separate people. You can defend yourself or someone else. At the end of the round I’ll tell you if they hit or not and when you are out of lives, you get eliminated. Last standing wins.
For those interested (the detailed mechanics):-
1) Every competitor enters the same arena. The melee is a free-for-all that begins as soon as the horn is sounded.
2) Each player has 3 'lives'. If you lose your last life, you are eliminated and must yield to your opponent(s) and leave the arena.
3) The competition will be broken down into rounds. Each round will have a deadline for posts; anyone missing the deadline will be assumed to have spent their entire round defending themselves (repeated missing of the deadline will result in elimination). If every competitor gets their submissions in before the deadline then I may move on and allow extra time for the next round.
4) For each round, players have four dice in total; two active attacking dice (six-sided) and two passive defending dice (eight or six-sided depending on the player's decision, see rule 6 below).
5) Each round, players choose one or two opponents from the remaining field of fighters to attack. Please role-play the nature of your attack, being limited to a couple of manoeuvres or one lunge/slash. You can feint at a target, but will only do damage if you actually attack them. You can either use both attacks against a single target, or move around the field and attack two separate targets.
6) Additionally, players choose whether they will be using their second defence dice to defend themselves, or someone else. If you choose to defend yourself, the second defence dice will be a six-sided dice. If you defend another, it will be an eight-sided dice.
7) The first defence dice will always be an eight-sided dice and automatically will be used to defend yourself from the first attack by attempting to block that attack.
8) In the event of a second attack on a single target, any additional defence dice that person has (either from themselves or another person) will be used to try and block that attack. If no second attack is directed at that person, the dice will be wasted.
9) Only one defence dice can be used per individual attack. Where a player has more than one remaining defence dice, the highest dice will always be used first.
10) You cannot 'save' your dice until the next round. Any unspent dice will be expended at the end of the round and new dice distributed at the beginning of the next.
11) For each attack, the defence dice and attack dice are rolled against each other. If the resulting number of the defence dice is equal to or higher than the number on the attack dice, the attack misses. If the attack dice rolls a higher number than the defence, the attack hits and the target loses a life.
12) If you have no defence dice left to block an incoming attack, it automatically hits and you lose a life. Please role-play as appropriate.
13) Please clearly identify your two Attacks and the target of the second Defence dice (which can be yourself) by highlighting them in Bold BLACK Text in a separate paragraph at the end of your post.
14) As GM, at the end of each round I will roll all dice together and post the outcomes. To help with role-play, imagine that a number of attacks happen simultaneously or your character may not feel the shock and pain of an hit until a few moments after it happens.
15) BONUS DICE!!! The GM has bonus attack dice and/or bonus defence dice to 'gift' to any players for good role-play or impressive contributions. Spectators or eliminated combatants can also nominate players to receive these - please post nominations in Bold BLACK Text at the end of your post.
16) I reserve the right to adjust rules for the final combatants to ensure we end in a single victor and not a simultaneous elimination; no double knock-outs.
OOC Rules:-
~ The usual plaza rules apply.
~ Please assume inspection will include removal of hidden weapons, poisons, mysterious vials of liquid, sharpened armour or other dangerous implements not in the spirit of Campian, etc. Yes, even your staff Mithrandir!
~ IC Weapons provided are any style or design wooden training weapons or the equivalent of current-day LARP-safe weapons, please role-play appropriately.
~ I have prepared an infinite supply of healer NPCs and soldier NPCs at my beck and call, so no dying or killing on my watch please. The odd accident or clumsy fumble can be entertaining, but remember this is meant to be fun.
~ The nature of this game involves interacting with other players through combat. Brief alliances, betrayals, teaming up and 'traitorous back-stabbing' is all the spirit of the game, but please remain respectful and upbeat at all times. By all means feel free to attempt one-on-one duel-like challenges, but be warned there is also nothing wrong with taking advantage of a turned back. Its a free-for-all, roll with it.
~ Targeted harassment and foul language will not be permitted.
~ Minimum 200 characters for IC posts
~ Respect the GM and the dice-rolls; please role-play the outcomes as best you can.
~ Please refrain from posting in Blue - this colour will be used for thread updates and round results.
~ Competitors please post their character name and remaining 'lives' at the bottom of each post so I can find your posts more easily.
~ Spectators are very welcome and encouraged to help their favoured champion (see rule 15 above)
This is an experiment and will need a little bit of timey-wimey imagination to work, bear with me if I have to tweak things a bit. I appreciate that posting early/late may impact on choices and provide some advantage/disadvantage, but I figure the limitation of people's availability and time-zones will help neutralise that.
