Æric and Edda with Bran and Fuin

Æric nodded in agreement about not making the rocking horse white. He knew all too well just how quickly toys, clothes, floors and pretty much anything else could get dirty in a manner of seconds when there was a young child around. At that moment Edda looked back up at him and smiled and as if to make a visual point, he saw the strawberry jam stain on her cheek and the smudge on her horse drawing and chuckled softly to himself.

"I have some lovely stained wood out back I can use, in fact I think it will work for both gifts. And simbelmynë should be easy enough to add to the chest. I think I could have them done for you in about a week, is that ok?"

Giving Bran a smile, his mind already working on the measurements and the designs, he distractedly turned towards the door as he heard someone else enter. Baffled at the sudden influx of customers, it took him a moment to recover, realising that he was getting another order. He could hardly believe his luck, especially as it was Edda's birthday soon, but also because he had only had one customer since arriving and his savings were becoming more meagre by the day. That it was coming from an elf only made it more unbelievable.

"Lailyn?" Æric could not hide the slight flush to his cheeks, or the sudden nervous shuffle as he fidgetted with a pencil. "I will be sure to thank her for recommending me, what would you like me to make? Cages, I am assuming?"

Fuin with Æric and Edda (And Bran)

Fuin noted the flush in his cheeks and gave a small smile, she knew those signs well enough and it was always something that humored the old elf. Men were even worse at concealing their nerves at such thing such things but she bit her tongue, she was not well enough friends with poor Æric to make jabs at him about such things.

"Indeed, she spoke quite highly and warned me to come early as you have a sweet child to take care of so you are more likely to close early so did not want to miss you." She said calmly nodding at his assumption of needing more cages. "I am in need of some more cages and perches, but the most pressing matter I have is that I did not pack myself a chair to sit on from Imladris while I'm at the falconry shop and I am loath to stand all day while at work" She said with a chuckle. "I don't suppose you have any of those readily available that I could just purchase and take back with me?" She glanced around the shop. "People say we elves are wise and tireless, I am simply forgetful and lazy, but blessed with enough coin that I need not worry about the forgetful part." She said with a chuckle.

Daran was in the back, mixing pastry dough for some strawberry tarts, when he heard the tinkle of the bell over the door and someone calling out. He swore quietly, tossing the dough to the side. Every time he tried to make this dough today, he got a customer. It was his fault, though, he reminded himself. He should have done them before opening, instead of working on hard candy. He knew better. Pastry dough didn't sit well, and he never usually did it mid-day.

Wiping his hands on his apron as he headed to the front of the shop, he smiled at the hooded woman he found waiting for him. Or he assumed, based on the voice he'd heard and the shape of the hooded person, it was a woman. Westu hal, he greeted her. I'm Daran, what can I do for you?

The puppies were definitely able to keep people busy, Jacen thought, when Lailyn said he hadn't kept her waiting. They are cute he replied with a grin before focusing in on her request for an adult dog. He was young, but he completely understood what she was trying to say to him and nodded in understanding. It does get lonely when you've got nobody else at home, doesn't it? I've been staying here above the shop, and it's very quiet, more than it is at home. He knew he wasn't a woman and didn't have to worry as much about what he knew Lailyn was saying, without actually saying it, but he knew how...worried...one could get when living alone.

I don't have any adult dogs, but I do have an older puppy, if that would work? he said hesitantly after a minute. He motioned to a corner almost hidden by the puppy pen and gave a low whistle. A large somewhat shaggy black puppy stood up from a bed hidden there and came ambling over. I call him Beorn, after the legends about Beorn the skin-changer. He's 10 months old and he's already three and a half stone, so he's going to be really big when he's full grown. Nobody has wanted him so far, but he'd make a great guard dog and friend. He patted the dog's head as the black creature sniffed at Lailyn.

Jacen was obviously wise beyond his years, understanding her meaning, and Lailyn was relieved she did not have to explain further. Lonely was the perfect word to use. “Yes,” she agreed simply, without further elaborating. Hearing there were no adult dogs was a disappointment. As cute as they were, she was skeptical about a puppy, even an older one...until she saw the large black dog pad over to them at Jacen’s summons.

There was no hiding the way her eyes lit up at the sight of the large puppy and she could not contain her laughter, either. “Beorn is a very fitting name for him!” As the dog sniffed her, she knelt down to get a closer look and held out her hand, patiently waiting for him to approach before she would pat him. “I think you and I could be friends, Beorn, if you would like that...only why has no one wanted you?” A frown tugged at her lips as she glanced up at Jacen, unable to see anything clearly amiss with the dog or any obvious reason for him to be passed over. He appeared healthy and well cared for, with clear eyes and nose, a full coat of shiny fur (and some to spare). “What is his temperament like?” He seemed very well behaved so far.

Umoya was a bit nervous after all she'd already had one transaction in this land that went smoothly but she knew she was an outsider here and she wasn't sure this would go as well, she felt like her stomach was up in her throat and the greeting in his own tongue threw her off for a moment as she tried to understand what it meant.

She decided that it was likely a standard greeting given how it had been said, "Greetings, Daran. I am Umoya" Her accent was clear though she worked very hard on trying to learn the right words in common and pronounce them correctly. "I saw chocolate." She said pulling her hood back not wanting the man to think she was being rude or up to no good. "I was 'oping to buy some as.... reminder of 'ome while I travel." She said with a small smile. She glanced at the other things in the shop still very much confused as to what some of them were. She was pretty certain that she had gotten the words right, which would hopefully help make sure that she stayed out of trouble.

Jacen smiled in relief when his customer was clearly delighted at the puppy. He'd been considering taking the pup to his sister's estate and asking her to use him as a working or hunting dog, since nobody seemed to want him. He's got a good temperament, nothing wrong with him that I can tell, he explained quickly when asked. He's not aggressive or destructive and he's learned a few basic commands like coming when I whistle and doing his business outside. He's just....big. He shrugged. The end sounded lame, but that was the best reason he could come up with. He couldn't think of any other reason why Beorn wouldn't find a home. Most of my customers live in the city here, and don't have enough room for a dog his size, nevermind what size he'll be when he finishes growing.

The woman in his shop seemed to be a bit nervous, though he didn't realize why until she greeted him back. She definitely wasn't a Rohir, her accent told him that. So he wasn't surprised, his people were not always welcoming of outsiders. Things had been much better since the War, but still, the Rohir took a long time to change. He was often considered odd for being so open to outsiders, but having travelled as much as he had, he knew what being an outsider felt like.

I do have chocolate, he said when the woman said why she was there. I have several types, though honestly it isn't the most popular sweet in Rohan. I have a bitter, dark chocolate and a sweeter milk chocolate in small bricks, and I've recently been making toffee covered in chocolate as well as chocolates with filling - today I have strawberry cream and butterscotch filled chocolates.

She was grateful when his response was that he did have chocolate and then began listing types almost faster than she could understand. She concentrated hard in an attempt to understand everything he was saying she cought a few of the words, bitter and dark. Those she knew. Sweeter milk though? She did not understand. and then other things. strawberry something.

"Am sorry I am not so very good at common." She said, "I know bitter, I know dark, and strawberry - little sweet fruit." She said making a little motion with her two index fingers that looked nothing like a strawberry at all but trying to make him understand what she understood. It was probably very very humorous to him. "What is milk?" She'd never heard of that particular word at least not in common, and the other words she wasn't entirely sure how to say them again he'd gone through them so very quickly. "Could try?" She asked a look on her face as she began to dig into a pouch at her side that had some Gondorian coins as she had traded her haradrim coins there since they were close enough that they had been good there still. Further than Gondor she had been told her coins likely wouldn't always be accepted. She set a few copper coins on the counter, likely she would see about dark chocolate or maybe this milk chocolate as a brick lots to eat over time. "Also maybe candy? Hard?"

It made her heart ache to hear no one wanted him and she longed to give him a home. Even though he was not quite the dog she was seeking, she knew she would be leaving the shop with him today. She had learned that some of the best things in life were unexpected and had to be embraced with open arms. So she would embrace Beorn into her life even though she had not quite planned for a puppy. He was healthy and knew (and seemed to heed) some basic commands and that was a start. There would always be bumps in the road but she would deal with them as they came.

She unfolded herself from kneeling and stood, drawing her attention from Beorn to Jacen. “Well…” she considered, “I have a good sized garden at my house and if he needs more space to roam, we’ll go on long walks together. He can come along when I go riding outside the city, too, I’m sure he’d like that.” Her mind was made up and her lips curled into a smile. “As long as he’s happy to live with me, I’d love to take him. Is there anything else I should know?”

She turned to look at the big pup with his shaggy coat and bright eyes looking for love that could not be denied. “So, Beorn, what do you think about coming home with me?”
