The Apothecary of Adab Nestad is a gazebo-style round outer building with marble columns, in the corner of the garden. Near the entrance is a fire (a miniature of the one in the Hall of Fire), around which visitors can rest in tranquility on carven stools, decorated with various forms of flora and fauna. Here, recovering patients, walking wounded, gardeners, healers, workers can enjoy fresh air while looking over the Garden.

Hanging over the fire is a cauldron on a long iron chain attached to iron rods intersecting above. The water is used for making curative teas that visitors can enjoy as dispensed by the herbalists as well as enjoy the loveliness of the surrounding gardens.

Inside both the inner and outer Apothecary areas are long tables and rolls of twine at which workers can tie up bunches of herbs to hang up-side down from the ceilings of the gazebo and inner dispensary room.

The round columns and ceiling of the gazebo intersect at the back at a corner of the Adab Nestad building, leading to an archway door to an inner room where some of the more complicated preparations are prepared and stored. Here will be hung the riskier herbs, such as deadly nightshade, henbane and hemlock, which require the more experienced Apothecaries to prepare and dispense directly to patients or to educate healers in Adab Nestad to allot to patients. These must be handled with utmost caution and the inner doors to AN and outer doors leading out to the gazebo are kept under lock and key to prevent patients and children from wandering in.

Inner and outer rooms for preparing herbs, teas, tisanes, mixtures, salves, rubs, poultices, etc. Stocked with all the paraphernalia required by Apothecaries. Much is kept in decorative chests and jars so as not to appear untidy.

There is a wooden lattice across the expanse of the ceilings of both inner and outer chambers, upon which are attached small iron hooks of varying lengths and sizes. Attached to the hooks are hundreds and hundreds of twine-tied herb bundles, hung by their stems. The aroma is enticing rather than overpowering.

As the gentle breezes flow softly through the gazebo it causes the hanging plants to twist delicately and wave back and forth. This causes the flowery, healing scents to intermingle and waft their way around the gardens and even out into the surrounding buildings and valley, dispersing a sense of calm to its inhabitants and visitors.

Tools and Supplies

-weights and scales
-drawer labels
-mortars and pestles

"The sons of Fëanor under Maedhros were the lords of
East Beleriand, but their people were in that time mostly
in the north of the land, and southward they rode only
to hunt in the greenwoods. But there Amrod and Amras
had their abode."

- Tolkien, from
The Silmarillion: Of Belriand and its Realms

EAST BELERIAND
Image

Bounded by the mighty river Sirion, renowned in song, and the swift waters of Gelion
is a wide & wild land of wood & plain. This lush emerald expanse stretches a hundred
leagues across a fair country filled with tall trees and fertile grasslands where
Dark Elves wander. There are fewer Fëanorians here than in the north amid the
realms of the March of Maedhros but the Exiles who call this enchanting territory
home are scattered elven hunters and mortal frontiersmen sworn to the lordship of twin kings, Amrod & Amros.

Image

A long wall of great steep hills running across Beleriand
from Nargothrond to cluster of ridges named Ramdal
but in the east the sides were less sheer.
Image
The Gates of Sirion was the cavernous opening in
the southern hills of Andram where Sirion mightily
from its subterranean course.
The Gates are located three leagues
south of the
Falls of Sirion where the storied river plunges
below the Andram south of Aelin-uial.
Image

"Upon Amon Ereb died Denethor..."
- Tolkien, from The Silmarillion:
Of Beleriand and its Realms

Between Ramdal and Gelion stands a lone hill, Amon Ereb,
of august height and gentle slopes. Here the King of the Laiquendi,
the Green Elves of Ossiriand, was slain viciously with all his kin
by the Orcs in the First Battle of Beleriand.
In later days, Caranthir fortifies it with his
twin brothers and Maedhros comes to dwell
with his kin aftter the decable of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
Image

"He came at last to a glade open to the stars, and there Melian
stood; and out of the darkness he looked at her,
and the light of Aman was in her face."

- Tolkien, from The Silmarillion: Of Thingol and Melian
Image
"In that wood in ages past Melian walked in the twilight
of Middle-earth when the trees were young, and
enchantment
lay upon it still. But now the trees of Nan Elmoth
were the tallest and darkest in all Beleriand,
and there the sun never came;
and there Eöl dwelt, who was named the Dark Elf."

- Tolkien, The Silmarillion: Of Maeglin

Loving the perpetual night of his shadowy forest
and the brilliant glory of starlight oversprinkled,
Eöl lives in the darkest depths of the primeval woodland.
He works his lustrous black steel, galvorn, in the smithy of dim halls
which his few servants, silent and secretive as their brooding master dutifully care for.
Shunning the Noldor, Eöl has made friends with Dwarves of the
Blue Mountains which he often meets on the
northenmost of their roads passing Nan Elmoth or in their cities of Ered Luin.

The Hills of Himring

"East of Dorthonion the marches of Beleriand
were most open to attack, and only hills of no
great height guarded the vale of Gelion from the north.
In that region, upon the March of Maedhros and in the lands behind,
dwelt the sons of Fëanor with many people;
and their riders passed often over the vast northern plain,
Lothlann the wide and empty, east of Ard-galen,
lest Morgoth should attempt any sortie towards East Beleriand.
The chief citadel of Maedhros was upon the
\Hill of Himring, the Ever-cold; and that was
wide-shouldered, bare of trees, and flat upon

its summit, surrounded by many lessers hills."
- Narrator, from The Silmarillion: Of Beleriand and Its Realms
"A few of either people [Edain of the First and Third Houses]
went to Maedhros and the lands about the Hill of Himring."

- Narrator, from The War of the Jewels: The Later Quenta Silmarillion

Image

On a great naked hill, taller than all the rest in the rugged territory,
stands the impregnable fortress
of Fëanor's eldest son, Maedhros.
A cold wind blows from the north, chilling
the immense albeit lesser ridges of
the Beleriand highlands where many Elves and fewer Mortals
lead their lives on the wooded slopes.

Warhorses gallop from the heights to patrol the
eastern edges of northern Beleriand, driving
Orcs and other hideous minions away
from the realms of Elves and Men.
Peace and mirth of Beleriand can only
be enjoyed by the sleepless watch of the March of Maedhros.

The Gap of Maglor

"Between the arms of Gelion was the
ward of Maglor, and here in one place the
hills failed altogether, there it was that
the Orcs came into East Beleriand
before the Third Battle.
Therefore the Noldor held
strength of cavalry in the plains at that place."

- Tolkien, from The Silmarillion: Of Beleriand and its Realms"
Image
The majestic valley of Maglor is a beauty to
behold under the light of the silver moon or in the radiance of the sun.
Between the tributaries of the swift Gelion river
is a vast expanse of great plains sloping steadily southward.
Image

There are fragrant meadows here in this verdant country.
The air is redolent with the scent of wildflowers and lupines.
Deep pools and glistening rills, small burbling streams
stemming from the Gelion or its shining arms,
reflect the splendor of the azure clouded sky.

Image

There are many Elven and Mortal civilians here
farming the lush arable land.
Ranchers provide horses to both soldier and traveller.

Image
"Cormen: City, fort, with a citadel and
central watch-tower. (Noun)"

- from Ambar Eldaryon Quenya Dictionary

In the grassy plateau between the eastern foothills of
Himring and the towering rocky mounds of Ered Luin's western flank
is the level ground where stands Cormenfásë.
A lofty fortress city and the soaring pinnacle of Mindon Nandaro,
the Harper's Tower, is nestled in Maglor's Gap behind the lofty curtain wall.

Image
Issuing from the fastness of the Fëanorian bastion,
are the most elite riders of the March of Maedhros.
They command a ceaseless watch in Lothlann, ridding Orcs
and other monstrosities of Morgoth from the boundaries of Elvendom.

Ailin-uial, the Twilit Meres

"But in the southern corner of Doriath, where Aros
flowed into Sirion, lay a region of great pools and marshes on either
side of the river, which halted there in his course and
strayed in many channels. This region the
Elves of Doriath named Umboth Muilin,
the Twilight Meres, for there were many mists, and the
enchantment of Doriath lay over them."

- Tolkien, from
The Lost Road and Other Writings:
Of Beleriand and its Realms

Image

"Mablung perforce brought them
to the hidden ferries at the Meres of Twilight."

- Tolkien, from The Silmarillion: Of Túrin Túrambar

Marchwardens of Doriath's western border have ferries hidden
in the Twilight Meres. Cloaked in the secrecy of the enshrouding
mists of this majestic place where the powers of Ulmo and Melian
mesh together, the sentries of King Thingol
keep watch amongst the silent riverbanks.

Image

Since Finrod and Turgon encamped here for
a fateful rest, your characters may do the same.
Just be wary of the Marchwardens.
They are guardians of this place.

The Third Age: Locations - The Isles (I)

Image
"After the 'breaking of the North' in the Great Battle, the shape of the North-west
of Middle-Earth was changed. Nearly all Beleriand was drowned in the sea.
Taur na Fuin became an island. The mountains of Eredwethion &c. became small isles (so also Himling)."

- Tolkien, from The Treason of Isengard
"And all the coasts and seaward regions of the western world suffered
great change and ruin in that time; for the seas invaded the lands,
and shores foundered, and ancient isles were drowned,
and new isles were uplifted; and hills crumbled and rivers were
turned into strange courses."

- Tolkien, from The Silmarillion: Akallabêth

"Those that sailed far came only to the new lands,
and found them like to the old lands."

- Tolkien, from The Silmarillion: Akallabeth

Image
"Now the sign of Meglin was a sable Mole, and he was great
among quarrymen and a chief of the delvers after ore; and
many of these belonged to his house."

- Tolkien, from The Book of Lost Tales II: The Fall of Gondolin

"But the folk of Meglin were drawn up in the same place
and sable was their harness, and they bore no sign or emblem,
but their round caps of steel were covered with moleskin, and they
fought with axes two-headed like mattocks. There Meglin prince
of Gondobar gathered many warriors of dark countenance and
lowering gaze about him, and a ruddy glow shone upon their faces
and gleamed about the polished surfaces of their accoutrement."

- Tolkien, from The Book of Lost Tales II: The Fall of Gondolin
Image
"Tuor...seized Meglin...and flung him far out. Great was the fall
of his body, and it smote Amon Gwareth three times ere it pitched
in the midmost of the flames; and the name of Meglin has gone out
in shame from among Eldar and Noldoli. Then the warriors of the
Mole being more numerous than those few of the Wing, and loyal
to their lord, came at Tuor, and there were great blows...and they
were smitten and driven to fly into what dark holes they might,
or flung from the walls."

- Tolkien, from The Book of Lost Tales II: The Fall of Gondolin

"Shields also they made displaying the tokens of many
houses and kindreds that vied one with another."

- Tolkien, from The Silmarillion:
Of The Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor

Image

Thousands of leagues beyond the shores of Lindon lies a remote island, fair and cool, thickly clouded in concealing vapours. The red glow of forgefires and brilliant lamps kindle bright lights in the drifting mists, welcoming returning mariners to the Island of the Moles. It is a refuge solely belonging to the surviving people of Prince Maeglin and refugees of Beleriand they welcomed in the dark waning years of the First Age. Hatholdir Nârroval, an Elf-lord and metallurgist of Maeglin's of the Mole House, recovered the sword which his chieftain once wielded before his demise. He proclaimed himself lord of the Moles. Hatholdir banded together the Moles hiding from vengeful Gondolin Elves and warmongering Orcs alike; over the years he welcomed any Elf needing sanctuary who either didn't know about the gathering of Elves at the Havens of Sirion or were too far away to risk a perilous journey to them. Of these desperate wanders, it were miners and warriors and quarryingmen and artisans being the most favored but also healers, hunters, weavers, and gardeners and those of other useful talents. Hatholdir established homes for them within Ered Wethrin, specifically the ranges of the gargantuan chain girdling the lands near Tol Sirion and extending west into the Mountains of Mithrim. When the earth-shattering tumults of the War of Wrath broke Beleriand into utter destruction, this territory of Ered Wethrin became an island, one of the largest oversea, which included regions of Mithrim.

Many of the delvers among the Noldor and Sindar who took the badge of the Mole in olden days have laboured in quarries and mines on Tol Noldare; they have extracted valuable kinds of rock and diverse gemstones from the mountains for millennia. Some Moles live in the countryside east of the long stream Araduin, the River of the King, which flowz from the sea. Others are sheltered in majestic chambers underground or below the snow-capped peaks in forests of conifers and shady broad-leaved trees. Mindon Nârroval - The Tower of the Bat - is the impregnable citadel of Hatholdir and his family; it stands loftily atop a steep mountain accessed by four sturdy rope bridges.

Only ships flying black sails emblazoned with the heraldic bat of Hatholdir - his symbol in Aman before the adoption of the Mole in Gondolin - are permitted into the harbours of the island by the sleepless watch, commanded by trusty Ospiel Iuliel. Her guards are assigned to the towering wall of forts built throughout the great mountainous coastline to keep everyone who is not a Mole, one of their relatives, or their most faithful allies out of Hatholdir's domain. If approaching the widest haven from the south, the mariner is greeted by a huge chryselephantine statue of Prince Maeglin constructed of gold and fire-blackened ivory; it was erected eons past with eyes fashioned of Balarian pearls which shine in the beams of sun and stars filtering through the island's mantle of fog. Lighthouses have been raised at the eastern and western havens on the island, guiding the way for Moles who have become sailors piloting freighters laden with Tol Noldarë goods or vessels shipping warriors to Lindonese ports.

Considering the surviving Gondolindrim still dislike Moles for their role in Gondolin's destruction and their attack on Tuor's house, most exports of Tol Noldarë are sent to the markets of Gondor - Dol Amroth, primarily - and those of eastern lands outside of Sauron's dominion. Obsessed with new locations for ore and gems, Hatholdir has commissioned Moles to scour hills of Eriador and the tunnels of the Misty Mountains not claimed by Aigronding and other prospectors from Rivendell or Lothlórien. Hatholdir has sent scouts recently in the last fifty years into the Mountains of Mirkwood unused by Silvan Elves; others have been dispatched into the mapped and unexplored areas of Rhûn to establish mining camps for Tol Noldarë. He wants to hold the allegiance of his people by sustaining their prosperity. He maintains the interest of his fighters by giving them the chance to battle even if it means selling their axes to reluctant Aigronding, Tar-Taidron of the Imladris Guards, as reinforcements or to the rebel kings of the East resisting the dominion of Mordor.

Sending droves of Moles off the island in hope of glorious pursuits and considering the threat of Umbarian siege,
Hatholdir must ensure the survival of his people remaining on Tol Noldarë by making hard choices. He has become involved in the slavetrade of Umbar, buying a small amount of human thralls from Sarabeth Gameela and Matsu Halsad. He has treated them as indentured servants for the Moles who work domestically for a short number of years before retiring peacefully to their individual sector of the island, owning their own lands west of Araduin. As long as they do not contest his leadership, Hatholdir has acted kindly on their behalf so the Mortals may not suffer Umbarian oppression though it means they must never return to the mainland of Middle-earth again.

Both Elf and Man co-exist on Tol Noldarë with seldom uprisings against his benevolent dictatorship. Against the ardent pleas of his wife - Meluiwen - and the wise counsel of close friends such as Erfaron, there's nothing Hatholdir wouldn't do to ensure the security and stability of the Moles even if it means doing something ignoble like shaking the dirtiest hands of Arda. He is feared and admired, respected and hated - a lucky gambler and a neutral party in the wars of the world, helping both Good and Evil to keep his Moles safe and flourishing.

miles away lies Sarch nia Chîn Húrin or more popularly known
among mariners in these days as Tol Sangwa, the Island of Poison.
This green isle is predominantly forested with birches and is a remnant of storied Brethil.

Atop Amon Obel, a great solitary mound, now stands a domed observatory of the Lindonese Elves built of white marble and swathed in tendrils of clinging ivy. A few homes of astronmomers and healers - both Elven and Dol Amrothian - are found deserted along the hillsides. Despite the beauty of the environment, its medicinal riches, and serene stargazing opportunities there is the danger. There are many poisonous snakes and toxic flora in the woods. Greater harm is the threat poised by Corsairs affiliated with the houses of Gameela and Halsad hoping to establish lairs here to ambush vessels of the Lindon Guard and attack elven ships sailing to Aman. Pharak's Umbarian cultists worshipping Sauron have come to sacrifice innocents here in the observatory tower which the Elves and Gondorians somehow abandoned, having been missing from the island for quite some time before the Umbarians came. The Corsairs are havesting both venom and the poisonous flowers with mysterious travellers from Rhûn.

Far into the Valley away from the serenity of most of the other buildings and homes of the Valley a large building rises up from the trees many chimneys reach skyward, wood smoke coming from many others the shimmering mirage of pure heat raising from them making the sky and trees behind them ripple.

It's windows are ever open the heat from the fires burning inside keeping it warm even on the chilliest of days,it's heavy wooden doors stand open and you can hear why it is tucked away from all other buildings. There is a loud ringing present every day from at least one Smith busy at work.

Inside them you can see a polished desk, the reception area a stack of papers neatly weighed down with a beautiful sculpture keeping them in place when no one is tending the reception area and beyond it great blazing forges for working iron and steel, and smaller ones less hot to work precious metals to create beautiful pieces of jewelry and trinkets.

Shield create by the late Janowyn

Each month (with the exception of the first as it's starting half way through the month so the first will be a month and a half) a new theme is chosen and members of all kingdoms are welcome to participate with art of all varieties - photography, drawing both traditional and digital mediums, prose (stories) and poetry as long as it fits the theme.

At the end of each thread we will have a 3 day voting period for the Artist of the Month who will be given the honor of suggesting 2 possible themes for the next thread!
