War Of The Dwarves And The Orcs - Early Morning Scrimmage

And of old it was not darksome, but full of light and splendour, as is still remembered in our songs.

Having caught up to the orc, Velm decided she could risk hand-to-hand combat. Although, the thought of touching the orc made her cringe. Filthy beast. She was not that clean and concluded that her feelings were more because she detested the race more than the dirt on one orc's face. She booted the orc in the gut then stood with her fists up, waiting for the badly cut orc to retaliate. It would not be a fair fight. But Velm cared not.

There was a pitiful wheezing sound coming from her dwarf and it was somewhat annoying. Right in that pitch that makes things unbearable for her ears. She cawed and gave the dwarf a harsh peck letting it know that it should die quietly. Or at least have the decency to not make that particular noise. It worked as far as Rhafna was aware as the dwarf quieted down for the most part after the second harsh peck she gave her.

Velm spat the blood from her lip. The orc, in a sudden burst of desperate energy, had slashed its hand out and caught her on the mouth with its dirty claw-like paw. It was that last surge of adrenaline that one gets when the odds are against them that had the orc fighting back. Raising her hand into a tight fist, Velm punched and splattered the orc's nose across its face. She was having none of his last minutes attempts. But the orc raged at his broken face and lurched forward, knocking them both over. Scrambling to her feet, Velm back up and breathing heavy, waited for the orc to do the same if he could.

Her brothers and sisters were overhead, they had noticed that Rhafna was near done with this dwarf that had harried her before, the life almost drained out of her body entirely, and she slumped now against the ground all that was left were the last few breaths and she would be dead. A cruel and stark victory for Rhafna who had almost lost her life to this dwarf and her compatriots and their enemies when they had all decided to work against her. And yet here she was sitting on top stronger than before

The orc attempted a swing at Velm, but he was bleeding out and too weak. The momentum of the swing knocked the orc to his knees. Velm looked down at the orc, its head bent and a string of reddish saliva stealing from his mouth. She raised her booted foot to end the combat when suddenly, the orc grabbed for a handful of dirt, found a good amount and flung it at the surprised dwarf's face.
Velm staggard back, her eyes suddenly stinging, her mouth full of dirt. She spat and blinked her eyes, allowing tears to flow and clean them. She then let out a loud laugh at the orc's stiff-neckedness and booted him in the head.

One last peck and the dwarf that has harassed her the most was dead. She gave a call and the crows that had been. Circling overhead came down to eat away at the corpse. Rhafna for her part locked an eyeball before taking to the wing look for the next dwarf that had tormented her.

Spitting a few tiny pieces of gravel from her mouth that were getting caught between her teeth when she clenched her jaw tight, Velm rolled the orc over with the toe of her heavy boot. The orc was breathing shallowly. He would gasp last soon, and that would be the end of him. Velm kicked him in the ribs for good measure, not taking a chance at getting a face full of dirt again. Then, gazing up, she saw a murder of crows descend to the ground. She knew that Kali was no more. Catching a hoarse sob in her throat, she ran towards her fallen kin swing her axe at the birds, scattering them. She took Kali's battered body in her arms and made her way towards Donlad and Giman.

With a few quick hard flaps of her wing's she was aloft. She didn't have to go far for her next victim. No they came to her upset at the inevitability of death and crows feasting on the battle field. Rhafna circled a few times and followed as the dwarf filled her arms with dead weight and swooped in to trike at her.

The dwarfs arms were still filled with the her fallen comrades body, which meant an easier opportunity for Rhafna to exact a toll for ever near miss that had come speeding at her, bow ax rock Rhafna remembered them all. Her children would remember them all, for crows had long memories and were not the sort to easily forgive. With that she dove and pecked at the dwarfs hand harshly thinking if she could make it so she couldn't use her hands then she would have an easier time with the dwarf.

So the bird was going to play dirty, thought Velm as she felt the peck of her beak. With Kali still in her arms, she felt a second strike and nearly fell over. She did manage to get Kali to a safe resting place before the bird hit her again. And now it was war.
Pulling out her axe, she turned and waited. The only way this bird would survive was if it was immortal, and Velm thought that was highly unlikely. There were much nobler birds than a beady-eyed Crebian. Meanwhile, the orc she had destroyed and left to die gasped once and perished.

The dwarf almost fell over. Pity they didn't not that it would stop Rhafna as she circled about. The lot of them had tried to kill her many times before now karma was being delivered. On swift black wings as it was. She circled once more lining herself up for a swift and targetted attack on the dwarf before swooping down beak first.

She swung her axe as the bird struck. It would be her routine. It would be the rote; bird strikes, axe swings. All thoughts she had she blanketed from her head except to rid herself of this conceited bird who had been a curse in this battle since the beginning. For no dwarf cared for another bane, be it fiery or feathery.

Indeed it would be a very very long war between strikes back and forth. There was one thing Rhafna was above all things else on this field and that was a survivor. She'd managed to take this dwarf and the one she'd just killed both attempting to kill her at the same time. Now there was only one left of the two of them. The result might be slow, but Rhafna was willing to wait.

Time. What a strange concept really that time would every be on anyone's side. Time was on no ones side, except for perhaps it's own side. Rhafna knew this perhaps better than most Time was a sick voyeur that just enjoyed watching misery, and she was part of the half time show with this stubborn dwarf... It just seemed like the dwarf wasn't aware that she was going to die eventually. They all were. None of them could beat time.

but that was enough crow philosophy for now.

Rhafna circled indeed her for was stubborn but she was equally hard headed. If one could take proof of how many times she'd struck a dwarf with her beak one could not argue how hard headed she was. The question was who would break first? And who would hit the final blow.

Donlad and Giman began to chant as Velm swung her axe at the bird. Up came Fali, Ridra and Dunabar, who remained of the force sent out almost a year ago. They joined in the chant.

Swoop. Swing... Repeat on and on and on it went unendingly it seemed and would go on for a good while longer. For the crow while she did not have a host of kin behind her cheering her on directly their voices did chorus in the background as they feasted on corpses left on the field for there were many of them

Rhafna was not idle on the field no she flew swift circles about the dwarf that stood against her and neither of them seemed to be gaining any real ground bit then they were also not losing any ground either and so their deadly dance continued... And greedy time watched from the sidelines knowing one would falter sooner or later.

'What is that over there?' asked Ridra, pointing in the direction of a heap of carcasses. They all turned to look (except, of course, Velm, who was standing her ground with the bird who, it seemed, was tiring and had a look (yes, this bird had an expression on its beak) of boredom). By a pile of dead bodies, an orc (Bolrag) arm with ragged armour shot up, and a rock flew towards the bird. It missed by a mile.
'Oi! It looks like this bird has more enemies.' said Fali.
'Yes indeed! exclaimed Donlad. 'Even the orcs are on our side. For now.'

Indeed there was hardly another person on the battlefield that had not taken a shot at one time or another on the bird that circled tightly about the strongest dwarf of the lot. It was a stern reminder that Rhafna had no friends and needed no friends outside her own kind. She was the strongest and oldest of the birds on the field and she would not let them down. No indeed she would continue to fight against this dwarf.

The bird must have been busy watching his fellow crows eat rotten flesh when Velm's axe hit the mark. She was sure she saw a black feather with a smear of blood float by, but she was getting battle-weary and it could of all been just her imagination. She swung her axe again.

And she was sure she saw a feather with a face etched in it, grinning as it floated towards a barricade of corpses. A hand suddenly shot up and grabbed the feather. The feather made a startled sound, a cross between a caw and an eek, 'caw-eek.' A dizzy-looking orc stood up from amidst the dead. He had a dirty rag tied around his head like a band. He stuck the feather in it. He then began to hoot and dance around on his crooked legs. The feather was squealing, too, as it bounced on the orcs head. Velm looked back towards the bird that was hovering above. She wondered if she had just imagined the orc and the feather. And was the bird there at all. There was only one way to tell. She swung her axe at it and heard a thunk.

Indeed it was so rote that the dwarf couldn't even hit her properly when she got bored for a moment and looked the other way. A telling tale as it were about how long this mess was going to take not that it mattered that much boredom was a dangerous game on the battle field and honestly not much would be happening in this war of attrition as it were. With that the bird gave the dwarf a peck back for the axe strike.

The dwarf was making strange noises. Clearly the two legged beast had lost it's mind and was descending into utter maddness. Also she said some very rude things about her own mother in Crow speak but Rhafna could hardly tell her that after all she was quite certain she was just making random noises and not aware that the tone of the caw meant something. Clearly she would not have called her own mother... THAT... or maybe she would dwarves. Uncultured brutes they were

Velm took a breather and ran back to the other dwarves, hidden behind some dead bodies, and asked them if they had seen an orc with a grinning feather stuck in a band on its head. They all shook their heads and said, nay nay. But they had seen an arm rise up from a pile of corpses and throw a rock in Velm and the birds' direction. Had the rock hit Velm in the head, they wondered. She seemed to be acting pretty strangely. But before they had a chance to ask her, she was jogging back to the combat zone axe swing.

Yes there was something wrong with the dwarf that was for sure. Of course she was running around like she was completely insane. Rhafna few up into the sky for a moment waiting for her to return from where she was safely hiding with her friends and the other militants on the battle field since that would be a waste of her energy. When she ran back out with her axe Rhafna swooped down beak at the ready to do damage.

After the last attack by the bird, the battlefield became eerily silent—the soft ripping sounds of birds feasting, the only sound. There was so many dead that the crows did not have to fight over the carnage. Velm found herself swaying on her feet. And then, she closed her eyes. Black wings covered all within her mind's eye, and damn, if it didn't make her fall asleep.
She woke with a start, not sure how long she had been sleeping, and swung her axe just before the bird had a chance to fly too high from her reach.

The sound of blood soaked feathers flapping through the air was exceptionally noisy to Rhafna as she wheeled and worked to keep aloft, indeed she was quite covered in gore but there was still more work to be done. Dirty killers work and she turned eyeing the dwarf that she was locked in battle with neither overly managing to land any dangerous blows thus far.

The remaining dwarves had sallied forth up the valley and into the Mountain with no attacks. For it would appear that all their enemies had been killed or had fled. Only the bird and an unsteady orc remained. The air was less foggy, and the sun was trying to break the thick covering of bruised-looking clouds that had blanketed the sky during the tail-end of the battle.
With food and drink in her body, brought down from the Mountain by Donlad and Fali (the other dwarves had remained behind for the time being), Velm felt ready to go on swinging her axe.

Indeed the sun was trying to break through the fog of war and shed light on the devastation that lay across the mountain side, rivelets of red running down it mixing with the iron oxide in the stones but the battle wasn't over yet, and there was food to be had and even as Donlad and Fali went to bring down food and drink she swooped down stealing a beak full and let out a laughing caw as Velm took another swing at her.

The salted pork was particularly good.

The bird was bold indeed. Velm saw it swoop down on her fellow dwarves and snatch something up - salted pork. That was fine. Velm preferred the dried meat (deer cured perfectly by the neighbouring woodsmen). The bird could eat all the salted pork it like, and perhaps, it would become so parched it would lose concentration and oops, her axe would beg its pardon and slice off a wing.

The next thing she headed for was the water skin stealing several wonderful mouthfuls as she looked the dwarf right in the eye as she eyeballed the other dwarves making them jump back in fear knowing full well that this crow was a dwarf (and orc killer) and did not want to get too close to the pointy end of the fearless bird. She gave a hope and a few good hard flaps of her wings and was airborn once more before the axe could do much to her.

But damage the axe did and would continue to do until the bird was dead. Water was plentiful if one dared to drink from the cold waters of the springs of Kibil-nâla. And long would be the Winter months if something or someone didn't slip, and the battle between dwarf and bird takes on a different course.

Again the bird struck swiftly making sure to get a quick peck at the fingers of the dwarf as she laughed in her cawing voice and her brothers and sisters answered her back sending up a raquet of deafening noise

The crow's pecks were weak. Velm still held her axe firmly with ease. She wasn't sure, but there seemed to be an awful reek coming from the bird as it swooped down and up. Could it be possible that it had BO (bird odour  )? Did crows have armpits?

Her axe smacked into her enemy again. The Crebian was a tough bird. It would take some time, at this rate, to bring it down. Winter was in full swing but, spring was coming. A year of battle was long enough. Velm looked at her fellow dwarves and began considering another plan to end this fight.

Was there another way to end this fight? Rhafna wasn't sure on that but she would agree that this was going to be an exceptionally long fight if noting changed. However she didn't have any one else to look at that was peers with her... No she was the only one of her kind to have true blood on her feathers.

Maybe she should put more oomph behind her axe swings. Knock more feathers to the ground. Fewer feathers would make it harder for the bird to fly. Less altitude would keep the crow within arms reach, at least. There was a stack of dead bodies that Velm could stand on and use to swing at the bird for an even better advantage if need be.

Indeed perhaps a harder peck or a swifter dive might work better for her but at this point it was still very much a back and forth indeed the dwarf had managed to do some damage to her but it was negligible in the greater scheme of things. As such Rhafna instead went for the safe bet and struck where she could without causing herself further injury.
