A thread for all things OOC

Well, this is exactly what the heading says: a thread for discussion on stuff that matters for Rangers.
What else?
Yes, the roster... in the next post. Thanks to @Arnyn for putting it together for the most part!

Right, a new year and a new thread, and it is time to see how things stand.

1. Roster:
- it would be nice to hear from you all if the weapons and skills are as should be; how are you doing in terms of availability for RP (status), etc.

2. Status suggestions (what do you think of these?):
- active (able to participate and post at least twice per month)
- on leave (unavailable for some time due to RL, etc)
- abroad (no activity for 3 months)
- AWOL (some other term?) (no activity for 6 + months)

3. Suggestions for/thoughts on leadership, ranks, training?

Firstly, thank you @Pele Alarion, for giving this activity/organisation a new thread, for a new year; a fresh page so to speak to take us onwards. The Rangers has always been such an important part of RP in this kingdom, and while @Winddancer has kindly provided the Tower Guard, that seems focused toward protecting people from crimes committed on a local level, and working with the dungeons/gaol. The Rangers, as an alternative, has always been more about protecting the people from threats abroad, or that threaten the entire nation, etc. That is why I believe it’s important to bring the following points over from the last thread, where such stellar work was done by many minds coming together with their thoughts:

With regard to ranks:

@Oro and @Arnyn kindly got us off the ground with an exciting RPG, led by their NPC commanders, but it was never the intention to keep those temporary characters as long-term leaders of the company. I believe the options were, following the conclusion of that initial RPG, that :

‘1/ new GMs step up and get to make their own Commander/Lieutenant NPCs, once the storyline has reached its conclusion they think of a reason they can once again be replaced and it all starts over with again new GMs, allowing for a rotation and fresh ideas and no one falling into a rut

or

2/ the Rangers as a whole choose their Commander and Lieutenant from among our own characters.’

Since the RPG has sort of pittered out for now and RL has stolen many of our number from activity, I would like to propose that by both standing up as a GM (as per the new RPG you alluded to the Barracks RPG thread), and also by starting off this new thread here for OOC/planning, a clear candidate for our next person of authority is clear.

I should like to cast my choice for Commander to yourself, Pele.

If you would rather RP as Faramir (or another NPC) to do this, or whether you would have the character of Pele the Ranger step up as acting, or actual leader, either way, I believe we would be in good hands. You are certainly the most experienced of those of us still active, and clearly committed/proactive to seeing Ranger activity return to Gondor.

As for the rest; I am not sure how many actual officers we need (if any) right now, as we do not want more leaders than soldiers ! But I think it’s fair to say that the original plan for two main levels of rank are a fair starting point in general. Any officers that require to be NPC’d by a GM to take a story forward is fair enough, but in general a character who enlists would either be

1) Ranger - an experienced in some/whatever level of previous version of Gondorian army etc character

or

2) Recruit - a brand new/never been part of the military before in any capacity’ type character

With regard to training:

I am of the understanding that nobody ought be ‘forced’ to undergo gruelling levels of training in RP. That said, they should be able to reflect their Ranger’s rank believably in any IC post. So, once more paraphrasing from all the brainstorming which was done in the outset of our previous discussions,

Rangers would all need to possess 4 different skill sets, regardless of their chosen main weapon or specialty:

1) Scouting
This includes scouting, stealth and tracking.
2) Survival:
This includes basic survival techniques such as building fires, making your own shelter, knowing how to look for food and water, and basic first aid.
3) Combat:
This includes unarmed combat, melee and ranged combat.
4) General:
General skills include riding, equipment upkeep,...

Rangers can then choose to specialize in one of the following:

- bow skills - Cúner
- spear skills - Ehtyar
- axe skills - Pelecconner
- sword skills - Hyandaner
- scouting skills - Tirdinen
- support skills (such as advanced healing, military logistics, armour and weapons crafting) – Yantyar

The fact of there being opportunities for persons concerned with strategy and smithing as opposed to actual combat type roleplay was a wonderful addition to this NUplaza version of the Rangers.

I would say that once a Recruit has taken part in one RPG, or some training posts in the Barracks thread (either on their own initiative, or with a ‘mentor’ if they would prefer) and/or in some other way proven their character has the basics skills listed above, then they would be eligible to move from ‘Recruit’ to being counted as a full member of the Rangers.

With regard to status/absence

I do like your four states of activity, although we could probably whittle it down to just three if we merge the ‘on leave’ and the ‘abroad’ options together. The main state that we need to be aware of is if which of the following is any Ranger at given time.

1) available for Ranger RP

2) having given notice that they will be unavailable/inactive from the Rangers/Nuplaza for a designated period of time. An IC reason may have been concocted for this time period.

3) having disappeared for more than a designated time (3 or 6 months etc), and having left us thus to assume that their characters is missing/lost/who knows ? with the option to present us with an exciting tale on their return (if they do return), to explain why they have missed (IC) what Gondor has been up to in the meantime.

With regard to my finally shutting up (after just this …)

I am sorry to point out that a few of the names on the roster are missing their character’s fullname *cough*Raxëlilta*cough* but more importantly, I feel this new OOC thread ought be actively plugging the new current and about to begin Ranger RPG which @Pele is gathering volunteers for in the Barracks thread also.

There is also @Fuin Elda's Third Age RPG here in Gondor, where she has invited a Gondorian military presence (see relevant OOC thread for the 'Buccaneers of Belfalas').

Also, Rangers who wish to ‘claim’ a room in the Barracks, while @Burnt Toast is unavailable, I asked an admin to update the Barracks OP accordingly with my Ranger's room assignment, so I’m sure that’s still an option as well for newcomers etc.

Also, also, are we still required to give a full account of our IC uniform, weapons, and otherwise equipment here in the OOC thread, as a couple of folk had done in the previous OOC thread ? Or do you think it would be more fun to have an IC inspection in the barracks, and have to explain our belongings there, to ensure all is in order ? It might be fun also for some more Barracks-related shenanigans. :googly:

A few people have done some Ranger IC in Ithilien, relating to training/practicing in combat and/or survivals skills, so again, an option is there for Ranger activity in our lovely Free RP threads. Shameless plugging for that too. Hopefully a little of us can go a long way ?

I think while you guys are making new threads, you should remake the Barracks thread as well, as Toasty wont be by to keep it up to date anytime soon. Of course we don't mind doing it, but it makes sense that someone active has the control over that to edit as they see fit :)

Can I peek in and make a suggestion? Looking at the roster a lot of folks listed elementary under healing skills. I know the Rangers have their own healer division, but would everyone be OK with having some sort of mini RP refresher type course on basic healing skills with the healers from the HoH? It wouldn't have to be too long, or overly complicated. But it can be if you'd like. I'm always up for doing medical research. (I have a feeling this is going to end on my tombstone one day  )

@Nessa Saelind I am sure that would be doable, well, for those of us active anyway. I did have Unalmis say in a recent post at the Healers thread, that he was only running around opening doors without knocking first, in search of some anatomy training. Would be quite apt of a response if that sort of training is now called for !

@Pele Alarion, was there not some sort of Ranger refresher/training thing back in the day ? I am somewhat half remembering it, or else entirely imagining the whole thing. :googly: PS. Thank you for updating the names in the roster/humouring my need for detail. :smooch:

@Ercassie - Unalmis and privacy, what a concept! Yes, his arrival for some remedial healer courses would be grand!

@Pele Alarion - why I'm so glad you asked, you can get one of the de Scardena twins who are in Emyn Arnen. I suggest Decius, since I mentioned in the post I wrote last year that captain Beregond would like to speak with him. So it would fit the narrative nicely. I think. Hope. *fingers crossed*

*pops head in and waves* Info on the roster is correct for Jaena. I am up for a Ranger RP, if there is one about to start; I got super behind on the last one and it just became too much work to try to write a massive post to get caught up, but if something new is starting, I would be up for it. Can't promise to be as prolific as I used to be, but should be able to manage twice a month.

Cassie alerted me here  . Looking forward to the new Ranger activity like seeing a fresh Barracks up soon and an RP. All the information you listed for me is still correct, Pele. I lead the hosts in the Imladris forum but I have no suggestions for the Rangers here, just happy to be a participant and will rank up by what's decided for the structure. I like Cassie's views on training. Adding my Belfalas noble NPCs to the roster if it's alright.

Hello!

Thanks to Pele's poke in discord, I came to take a look.

First of all, everyone: I feel very bad about letting the Ranger RPG peter out as it did. :embarrassed: My problem was that since people were getting less and less posty, I then lost my motivation to continue investing time in the narrative, and with hardly any posts during my August holiday, I just checked in less and less... my fault. I am very sorry about it, because the finale was gonna be quite rhe doozy.

I don't know how people are referring to Commander Amathen and lt Macardil's absence now but I could share the plotline to justify it. If you want?
Might be handy for the sake of the storyline or whatever. Let me know.

1. What is up there in the roster for Arnyn and Kaylin is correct. I am not sure about my activity level, but I wouldn't mind writing a bit more again. Twice a month seems doable if there is stuff going on to have fun with!

2. I am fine with whatever status suggestions seem good to people. I do agree with Ercassie that abroad and awol can be merged. I would vote for that merge.

3. I would keep the ranks as discussed in the last thread (innocent look). And as for leaders: Pele needs some responsibility, I don't object to giving her some  I think one leader is enough for someone as steadily active as Pele. Maybe 1 more backup but would def not expand it more for the time being.

Speaking of ranks: should active players in the last rpg get a reward with a specialization of sorts? I kept track of the number of posts everyone there wrote displaying for example spear skills (wielding it, taking care of weapons, decribing whatever seemed relevant) and so on until early august.
Could be a nice activity too? (People earning a spec in HQ?) A list could, say, be discovered in commander Amathen 's office at the fort from the rpg to justify it. Or Pele can say she saw the skills and deems them worthy of a spec etc.

*catches up with an onslaught of posts*

1. Suppose we really don't need more than Rangers and Recruits, and their specialisations, eh...

2. Status: might as well just leave active and abroad (even without 'leave'), for the sake of convenience?

3. I don't know about full list of weapons and uniform - that would make the roster even longer. Hmm.

4. @Tharmáras, I think Swan Knights and all other related folk might need a separate list?

5. @Arnyn, well, sometimes RPGs don't work out, right? Why feel guilty? I think you'd deserve a chance to bring it to some sort of closure and hand out the specs!

6. Forgotten thing No. 1

7. Forgotten thing No. 2...

I saw the lovely Ilisys on the roster so that prompted me to add Arin and Halion. I do think a seperate list for Swan Knights is a great idea,@Pele Alarion for members like @Ercassie and myself who use such characters!

My apologies for throwing in again, but I just have to say @Arnyn :smooch: . Personally I am so grateful to you for keeping that RPG going for as long as you did. And it's lovely to see you back, even sporadically.

@Tharmáras, since I may have confused matters, I ought to state that Ilisys is not participating in the Rangers as a representative of the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth. She trained with them, yes, but ultimately found their very specialised unit a little too restrictive for her less-than-conservative tendencies. So, as I understood it, a Ranger can have trained/served/have a background of skills honed as a Swan Knight, but not all Swan Knights are necessarily nor automatically Rangers. If that makes sense.

@Nessa Saelind, I will definitely be seeing you then. I don't know whether Nal or Isys would prove the more difficult student for your remedial healing classes, but it shall be an experience for certain !

There is no reason you can't RP them as Swan Knights of Dol Amroth. :smooch: We do have that Southern fiefdoms Free RP thread after all. And who knows, perhaps a future RPG which sees the Rangers require nautical assistance in some sort of collaboration ?

That sounds like a brilliant idea, @Ercassie :smooch: , I'll have Arin and Halion there in the Southern Fiefdoms thread. Can they have adventures with Isys there, we can plot about it :winkkiss: ? Halion's family builds ships and he sails them so if we do have a future RPG with Swan Knight collaboration, he could provide nautical assistance yes  .

List updates and all such things will have to wait though, I should get to bed as tomorrow is no longer a day off, alas!

@Pele Alarion please put Kamion as active, and remove 'Balakan'! He's just Kamion  I fell off the boat on the last RP like a number of others, but fully intend to keep Kamion around and active in future activities, or if the current RP is going to continue in some fashion.

Some great thoughts from @Ercassie, above, and I like the idea of Ranger/Recruit as the ranks, if we're going to stay with the ranger format rather than the army. I also support Pele for leader/Commander/whatever title she so desires as the person to head up the rangers! Whether as Faramir or Pele or whoever. With the smaller amount of people we have these days and with the ranger format, it makes sense to me that there wouldn't always necessarily be an 'officer' leading a small mission/scouting party/whatever, but a group of rangers possibly with one designated as the party leader depending on the situation- so, all full rangers but the commander (and a lieutenant?) being of technically equal rank.

Me again, with another suggestion (you're soon going to be sick of me poking my head in here  ).

Regarding training, I was thinking that it might be a good idea to do small-scale, short side exercises/missions/quests/things with fewer people. But do them more often and have them integrated with other parts of the Kingdom. My suggestion for the first would be that the rangers guard a few healers who are sent from the Houses of Healing to gather healing herbs that grow near the Ithilien-Mordor border. The rangers could get their training and refresher course on their healing skills all in one. In addition, to grumbling at a boring escort mission with the people, they dread the most in the world  and healers would finally get out and about. What say you?

Oops, thought I actually posted here yesterday, must not have gone through:

Thanks for the poke! I'm bummed I dropped off the face of the earth, but I am still alive. Last fall was a big "life happens" shift, mostly in a good way (everything considered) and the Plaza was the margin that had to suddenly be cut to keep things spinning. I'm definitely interested in picking back up as stuff settles down, but one of the surprising outcomes from everything last year is that I'm starting a new job (yesterday was my first day) that will hopefully let me settle into a sane rhythm...but it's going to take at least a couple weeks before I have a good sense of that. So I don't want to commit to anything until I'm at least a week or two in, but the idea of something low-key (training/banter/minor-problem-solving) sounds like a lot of fun....if I end up having the margin to add the Plaza back in.

I’ll go poke around the barracks and into the new RP.

Hey, could I make a request for a room in the Barracks?

 My thanks indeed for that, @Nessa Saelind. Of course even the smallest breeze can throw many things into disarray. As for a whirlwind ... .

@Pele Alarion, please may I change up the crossbow for a regular bow in Unalmis’s weaponry ? The crossbow was very much meant as an experiment while he built up muscles and refreshed some training enough to be proficient. It proved an interesting investigation during the initial mission, but I think he’ll fall to a more standard now as his training and practice will have been by now assumed by the amount of time passed. Plus it gives me an excuse to attempt some target practice in the barracks, err .. I mean, in the training grounds of course !

I have thrown trouble into the RPG, looking forward to some official scouting and tracking experience at last. But I am working currently on a bit of a less professional activity in the barracks. To instigate some fun there. Anyone is welcome to join in.

Also, Welcome to the Rangers @Dunulf and Frost/@The King in Yellow/he of many names.

@Dunulf Sure thing! Would you rather have a separate room, or join the two rascals?

What? Mischief in barracks? Oh dear.

@Pele Alarion I really don't mind, but I'm pretty new to RPing in general so perhaps a separate room? I'd probably struggle to RP sharing a room with the rascals  then again, I'm pretty open to the idea since my character is a newcomer to Gondor and quite young  to me, it would depend more on the storylines of Unalmis and Beren since my own is very flexible

@Ercassie many thanks! It's been a few years since I dipped my toes in the old Plaza, and only now in my first year at university did I realise how much I miss it!

@Dunulf What do you mean pretty new to RP? Your posts are excellent. I kept to writing two-liners for a rather long time until I dared to venture towards Rangers. At any rate, a separate room it is for now, and it can always be changed later, if you will have such a wish.
Also, somehow I cannot place you in the old plaza - where did you hang out mostly and when was it?

@Pele Alarion You do me too much credit! My posts are just rambles that spawn from the boredom and stress of studying law  Separate room sounds great, thank you.

As for the old plaza, I was registered under a different name (which, for the life of me, I can't remember) and I was mostly a lurker within the Basic/Advanced Lore and the Middle-earth Languages areas - I don't think I ever tried RP back then. As for when exactly, I believe it was about 2016-2017, but don't quote me on that.

@Dunulf It would not be a good style to wish boredom and stress on you, but... you know, if you keep writing like this.
Ah, that would make sense then, I tried very hard to figure out if you are someone I should know and can't remember, but that explains a lot.

I'm halfway done with my post in The Hunters and the Hunted.

I should be able to finish sometime between tomorrow and late Thursday evening because of work hours!

@Dunulf What? Me? I don't know about that...

@Tharmáras I might write the next important prompt some time this weekend to see if anyone else jumps in until then, so you'll have enough time to work on that post of yours.

@Pele Alarion will that next impromptu post with prompts contain who's on potato peeling duty? Because that's the quality content I signed up for  Erm technically I'm not a ranger, so I didn't sign up for anything, but I'm here for it.
