On the outskirts of Edoras, only a few minutes’ walk from the city’s bustling heart, lies a derelict farmstead. Dotted with ramshackle wooden outbuildings and overgrown meadows strewn with wildflowers, a large tent has been set up at the farmstead’s center. One of the nearby pastures is still occupied by a trio of waist-high, spoiled-looking miniature horses who crop the grass busily, or doze beneath a spreading tree. Chickens scratch about in the dirt, searching for seeds or insects, and a ginger cat lounges in an open doorway. On this particular very early morning, the air about the Infirmary still smells strongly of smoke--though the fires that ravaged Edoras did not reach this far, the scent is a sobering reminder of the night's trials.

EDORAS INFIRMARY--ALL WELCOME a sign in front of the farmstead’s central tent announces. The letters are coupled with the outline of a mortar and pestle, to indicate the tent’s function to those visitors who cannot read.

A cookfire in front of the tent is burning merrily despite the early hour, and the wholesome smell of steeping herbs rises from a pot set above the flames. On a wooden drying rack, strips of linen bandages and cotton gauze are set out to bleach once the sun has fully risen. Beside the entrance to the tent, a small table has been set up, on which rests a pitcher, washbasin and large cake of lye soap scented with lavender. BEMA WANTS YOU TO WASH UP, another sign proclaims, coupled with the hastily sketched image of two suds-covered hands.

Within the tent are two rows of tidy camp beds, partitioned off from one another by sheets draped over lengths of rope. A few are occupied, though most sit empty, waiting until such a time as they are needed. At the back of the tent, a long row of shelves has been set up, stocked with the tools of a healer’s trade—glass bottles filled with dried herbs, horse hair and steel needles, rolls of bandages, and small earthenware crocks of honey.

The Edoras Infirmary is an independent establishment that welcomes visitors from any kingdom from Middle Earth. In the interest of maintaining peace, it is the Infirmary's policy that upon arrival, ALL weapons must be relinquished to the Lead Healer. They will be kept safe and returned at your departure. NO exceptions will be made, and any who fail to abide by the rules of the Infirmary will be sedated and restrained until such a time as they can be escorted off-site. A second violation of the no weapons rule will result in a ban from Infirmary property.

Very light godmoding may be undertaken by healers at times--settling patients onto beds, leading them to locations, dispensing treatments etc. However, if a patient is in dire medical straits, confused, or unconscious, healers may be required to quickly act in their best interests without previously requesting permission.

Sigrid
Healer

"A little to the left.. no the other left!" Chuckling she waited until Alwin had shifted it over to the correct side. "There! Thats it, right there!" With a smile Alwin pulled a nail from his mouth and hammered it into the garland, securing it to the wall. Leaning back he made sure it was secure before he made his way down the small ladder, collapsing it before heading out. "I will see to the horses, Miss." He said softly, ignoring her constant plea to call her Sigrid.

Sighing and rolling her eyes with exasperation, Sigrid still couldn't help but smile at him. He really was a gem, just a very old-fashioned one. Turning back, she eyed the garland critically, pleased with the outcome. It lent a bit more of a festive air to the room and if nothing else the fir branches used would help mask the more unsavoury smells. Hands on her hips, she wondered if she should add a bit of holly as well.

With Thalionwen away for the forseeable future it was up to her to make sure things were kept in order, but that did not mean she could not add a few festive decorations to celebrate the coming Mettarë. Slowly her gaze took in the empty room, that not long ago had been filled with those who had been injured in the fires. A stab of guilt twinged in her stomach, her hand sliding across her waist absentmindedly to ease the ache. There was nothing she could do about that now, but she could make sure that anyone else arriving would be seen to.

The older woman came to the infirmary her greying blond hair was pulled back in a neat braid and her dress made it fairly obvious that she was a farmer though she had made sure her dress was clean. She wasn't a proper healer but as a mother of three children she knew a fair amount of herbal remedies, mostly from her own mother as they lived so far from any actual healers that it was. She felt very silly coming to try to learn more healing as from what she could tell most of the prospective apprentices were far younger than she was. She rung her hands and looked about hoping she wasn't being foolish.

With a deep breath she steeled her nerves and waited to see who would be greeting her hopefully she would be able to learn quickly as she did have family to look after still though the children were now getting to be much more independent now which was why she felt like she could be here. She ran her hands over her apron and licked her lips still a little more nervous than she would like to admit.

She looked at the stack of sheets, hands on her hips and wondered if she should do two trips. "Nah.. it will be fine.." she mumbled to herself, sliding her arms in under the bottom sheet and grabbing the bundle. Using her chin, she ensured the stack didn't topple and slowly made her way towards the main tent. She couldn't help but chuckle as she almost tripped over the chicken, several of them trying to fly to safety as she cursed under her breath.

Righting herself and pushing her chin even further into the stack, she turned and made her way backwards into the tent so that the flap wouldn't pull the stack of sheets from her. Bum first, she made it in, turning carefully once the flap let go of her and almost dropped them all as she barely avoided walking right into the woman stood within.

"Gracious Valar!" She exclaimed with half a chuckle. "You sure did scare the living daylight out of me! Hang on, gimme a sec.." Balancing the stack, chin digging further into the sheets, she made a beeline towards an empty table and only just managed to set the sheets down onto it without all of them falling to the ground. "That will teach me not to be lazy.." she mused softly, before turning back to the woman.

"Sorry about that! I did not see you enter. My name is Sigrid, I am a healer here. How may I help you?" Keen blue eyes took in the woman before her, eyes darting all over her on instinct to see if there were any obvious wounds, finally settling on the woman's eyes once she saw there were none easily seen.

Trewyn
Prospective Apprentice

Trewyn had tried to get out the the way and had managed that but appeared to have frightened the healer that she had managed to frighten by standing there. "I'm very sorry Sigrid, my name is Trewyn, I wasn't sure who to talk to about becoming an apprentice here. I didn't mean to frighten you." She said and looked at the stack of sheets that were on the table having half followed Sigrid towards the table, mother instinct kicking in telling her she should put away the sheets and tidy even though this was not her house. And he had to clasp her hands together to keep from keeping herself from reaching out and taking half of the stack of clean sheets to put away. She did not after all want to give a bad impression. "I was very much hoping that you might be able to tell me how I might become an proper apprentice here at the Infirmary. I've raised three children and taken care of a husband that's now passed but I've never been formally trained just what my mother taught me and I've taught as much to my children." She said calmly. "But now that my daughters are old enough to take care of themselves while I learn, and not burn down the house I figured I should do what I always wanted to do and see if I could become a healer."

She said with a small smile, a little worried given that she'd be seen as too old to become an apprentice, she doubted she'd ever rightly become a master healer that would take a long time, but she hoped she could learn far more and become a right proper healer.

"Become an apprentice? Oh wonderful!" Sigrid immediately relaxed when it became clear that the woman was not needing medical attention. Shaking her head, she smiled and waved off Trewyn's comment about being too old for the job. "Nonsense! As long as you can help and are willing to learn."

For a moment she remained silent, trying to figure out what to do. Thalionwen had left some time ago, leaving the place in her hands, however this was the first person that had actually applied. Scratching at her temple she finally settled on doing what Thalionwen had done with her.

"Thalionwen is the actual proprietor here, though at the moment she is away to teach the healing skills to the outlying posts. She might not be back for ages, so we will have to keep this place afloat while she is away." Sigrid added a smile, softly clapping the freshly washed sheets.

"Thalionwen's plan is to charge for our services on a sliding scale, based on means and need. You'd earn half of the fee brought in by any patient you attend, with the remainder kept back to pay for Infirmary maintenance and supplies. Would you need room and board? We do have some cottages that are empty and you would be welcome to eat with me and Alwin."

As if forgetting the more important part, she quickly added "Of course we will have to have you be on a trial period to begin with. And I cannot just take your word for it that you have the skills, especially not in these uncertain times, I hope you understand.." Sigrid looked uncomfortable at having to make the woman prove herself, but there was no other delicate way of saying it.

"So if you still decide to proceed, then I will come up with a test or two for you to complete, does that sound ok? Would you like to proceed?"

Trewyn was happy that her age would not be an issue, as she most certainly was willing to learn she did get a bit worried when she was told that Thalionwen the proprietor of the infirmary was away and Sigrid wasn't sure when she would come back. When she said that 'we' in regards to keeping the place running while she was away Trewyn gave a small nod. That was quite a leap to take but she was willing to help out any way she could.

"I will need room I'm afraid, I am quite alright with cooking for myself though unless it's easier to do room and board." She said quite happy that Sigrid confirmed that it her age was not an issue at all. The sliding pay scale worked for her as long as she was able to sleep warmly and have a full belly, anything extra beyond that was a bonus to her after she had spent most of her life living on a farm and working constantly to make sure the warm bed and full belly were a constant for her family she was certain she'd end up with enough payment to live fairly comfortably and be able to help with teaching healing away from the main infirmary in the future.

She shut her eyes and gave a slight night at the comment about a trial period. It would be fooling to hire someone that didn't have any skills at all, or would faint at the smallest amount of blood as a healer so she was not to worried about that. "No no, I would be quite worried if the healers here had not proven themselves in some way in terms of studying before they started treating people. I will say I may not perhaps know certain things, but then again that is why I am hoping to apprentice after all. Whenever you're ready I am happy to be tested to prove what I do know."

"Wonderful!"

It was more than apparent that Sigrid was relieved that the woman had accepted the terms. The only reason it had even been possible to keep this place running on her own for so long, had only been because there had not been that many that had needed seeing to. Though that was both good and bad she mused. Leaving the stack of sheets to be put away later, she gestured towards the large cupboard that stood at the back of the tent.

"Come with me please.." she said with a smile as she lead the way. Once there, she threw open both of the doors and revealed hundreds of jars and bottles filled with various dried herbs, ointments and fluids. Every single jar and bottle were carefully labelled with their contents.

As if suddenly realising something, Sigrid turned towards Trewyn, concern written on her face. "I uh.. well I guess I need to ask you if you can read? If not, it is not a huge problem, however that will be something you would have to learn first. As you can see all of the ointments and herbs we use are labelled and it could be disastrous if you used the wrong one." Sigrid fidgeted with her skirt a moment before continuing. "I am in the process of teaching Alwin, and would happily teach you too.." Her voice trailed off as she looked for a sign on the woman's face that she had overstepped her boundries.

Trewyn followed happily looking at the towels that were left to be put away later, the mother in her desperately wanted to put those away first, but she was not the one in charge here that would be Sigrid and she was going to follow her and do this test. Whatever it was. The two of them headed to a very large cupboard, Trewyn felt it was almost the size of the pantry in her house what was in there was beyond her, she rather hoped it was not some dead skeleton and she'd have to tell this woman what the bones names were. If that was the test then Trewyn would undoubtedly fail. However instead the doors were flung open and the older womans hand flew to her mouth as she gasped.

She had never seen anything nearly so beautiful in her life. To keep a cupboard that neat and orderly? Clearly there were never children about. Trewyn kept all her herbs for a good portion of her childrens life up high enough that she had to get a stool and clamber up it in order to reach it so that they would be out of reach of little grabby hands and eager mouths. She caught Sigrid turning towards her suddenly concerned and she blinked and flushed read at the question. She was a woman of the country and reading... it was not her strongest suit. "I must admit I have learned my letters and I can read a small amount thanks to both my son and the woman that employs him, but," She looked over some of them pausing for a moment. "I have to admit I probably would not be able to read every single one as some herbal names are difficult." She said catching the fidget and bit her lip slightly. Only to smile at the suggestion that she could learn with another person. "I don't know how much I need to learn probably a goodly amount, I do know a good many letters and words, so hopefully I will be a swift study in terms of what I do not know. I do know what most herbs look like whole and dry so perhaps that would be a good place to start as even if I can not read the names I know what they are, or at least what a simple country person would call them and sometimes what they are good for." She said with a bright smile hoping that such knowledge was acceptable.

Sigrid saw the woman flush bright red and nearly died. She knew a lot of people had not learned their letters, especially those that lived further out. Most just did not have the time, their precious time taken up with hard work on farms or tending to horses. Or both. She had not wanted to put the woman on the spot and make a deal of her not being able to read, however it was vital that those who worked here, could. She had not been exaggerating when she said that it was necessary so as to prevent the wrong ointment or herb being used. The damage that could cause made her gut wrench painfully.

She did let out a relieved breath when the woman agreed to be taught more of the letters and with the basics already out of the way they could likely focus on the ones labelled here in the cupboard. "Oh wonderful!" She exclaimed with sincerity as the woman explained that she knew most of the herbs. At least that was easy enough to test.

Standing on her tippy toes, she pulled down one marked Goldenseal and held it out towards Trewyn so she could see the label. "Can you read what this one says? Or can you tell from looking at it? If you can, do you know what it can help with and what to be careful with?" If Trewyn reached out to take the container she would happily relinquish it so the woman could open it if need be.

Trewyn smiled and looked at the small bottle that Sigrid had grabbed, she looked at it closely and held out a hand to look at it. It looked familiar. "Gold--" She read the label or at least part of it. She looked at the herb in the jar again and frowned and opened it and gave a little sniff as she tapped the jar moving the herb about a bit.

"Goldenseal? It's a bitter that you can take as a tea or use as a tincture, some brave souls just eat the bitter thing." She said with a smile, even if she couldn't read the word entirely she was certain she knew what it was, no longer looking at the name of the jar. 'It's good for helping with colds and the like, as well as certain stomach issues, and the odd little scrape or skin issues. I heard use of it for other issues like when men and women are having pain relieving themselves that it can help with that though I've never used it that way myself." She said handing the jar back to Sigrid with a smile. "Oh and for being careful with it too much can cause you to feel like you've issues and some people throw up with it, my son couldn't take it at all he'd throw up all the time on it so used other things for him when he had a cold. And it can cause issues with pregnant women, I have to admit I'm not entirely sure what just was told by my mother pregnant women shouldn't have it especially if they're eating or drinking it it. Not sure on the tinture part of that I've always had other plants that I know are safe to use for scrapes and skin issues and didn't overly want to try it on myself. " She looked like she was going to go on with a life story but promptly closed her mouth "Sorry you don't need a life story in the answer. It gets very lonely sometimes out on a farm." She was about to keep going explaining how her kids were grown and she closed her mouth again turning a bit red again.

Sigrid watched Trewyn with interest as the woman took the bottle from her, smiling slightly when she read half of the word. As the woman leaned in to smell the ingredients, she too almost drew in a breath, recalling the herbs slightly bitter aroma. Her small smile immediately grew when Trewyn correctly guessed what it was, easily recalling all the effects and side effects.

"Wonderful!" She exclaimed with enthusiasm, taking the bottle back. While the woman would definitely need to be taught how to read more than she could, it was a relief to see that she knew her way around the herbs. If nothing else, she could always have Trewyn double check the label with her before using anything, until they were both sure Trewyn wasn't going to be giving the wrong herb accidentally.

Putting the bottle back where it belonged, she turned back to the woman and noticed that her cheeks had gone a brighter shade of red. "Please, always feel free to share anything you want. There are not many who stop by anymore, so it is nice to finally have someone to talk to again." Giving a reassuring smile, Sigrid gently squeezed the woman's arm, hoping to calm her fears.

"So, what would you do to deal with someone who has had a very severe sunstroke?" A sad smile pulled on her lips as she thought back to the day she had met Éolath on her first day here, her heart twinging with pain from missing him.

She smiled as she was told that there were not many that stopped here any more. "I would think that not having many to talk to here might be a good thing. Means we are at peace, and our borders are, fairly safe." She said with a smile, she gave the womans hand a pat on her arm. "But I do understand it is nice to have someone to talk to especially compared to perhaps someone that is wounded and in your care." She said happily.

"Severe sunstroke?" She gave a nod "The first thing would be to get them out of the sun, into a cool place if at all possible, then start cooling them, getting their closing loosened or off if it is too tight, wet cool rags to their body and head and neck while fanning them until they are cool enough to safely immerse their body in cool water to cool them faster, if one cools them too fast they can become even worse." She said calmly. "we do need to get some liquids in them but slowly, if you go to fast, they will throw up and further dehydrate themselves, and one should also try to make sure that they aren't drinking just water, they will need salts as well, to make it easier to keep the water down, for they will have sweat plenty before getting to having sunstroke. It can take a while for a person to recover, so they should be watched and kept out of the sun until they are fully recovered and their body has cooled and stays properly cooled so that they do not fall to fits, or unconscious."

Trewyn was indeed right that in a sense it was good it was quiet as it meant less people had gotten hurt. But she also knew that people got hurt whether there were battles or not. And yet none had come seeking help in ages. She still could not help but feel that it was linked to Thalionwen moving, that the people just did not know her and thereby did not trust she could do it as good as Thalionwen had. Not that it was going to stop her. She had dedicated her life to healing and she would continue to do so.

Blinking away her sombre thoughts, she paid attention to what the older woman was saying, her own smile growing the more the woman listed off what to do. "Perfect!" She exclaimed happily as the woman finally finished, once more wincing briefly as her mind jumped to thoughts of Éolath again. Would her heart ever recover?

Swallowing hard, she forced herself to smile as she extended her hand towards Trewyn. "Consider yourself a healer's apprentice then! You will have to finish learning your letters and of course you will only be able to assist with the first few patients, but I can see you rising to being a healer in no time." At this her smile became fuller and more natural as she began heading towards the exit.

"We have some cabins that you can choose from, as only Alwin and I are living here full time at the moment." She could not help the sad smile, though she tried to hide it by quickly turning and heading out of the large tent.

Trewyn
Apprentice Healer

Trewyn smiled and let out a breath as she was offered a hand and told to consider herself a healers apprentice.

This was something she had really wanted to learn since she was a fairly young girl properly but had always made due with her mothers teachings because who had time for such silly endeavors when one lived on a farm and was raising 3 children. It certainly had not been her. She nodded at the comment of finishing learning her letters and that she would only be able to assist at first but that she might be a healer in no time? That was high praise as far as she was concerned, she would practice her letters far more here she figured than she had with her son. After all when he had been around she'd not needed to know her letters terribly well, but now he was his own man and he was doing well for himself, here though she would certainly need to learn her letters especially if she was going to be a healer and treating people on her own in no time as Sigrid had said. Yes she was quite resolved to learn her letters.

She did not miss the sad smile, it as hard when one lived alone, she knew that well enough, "Well now you are stuck with me, perhaps I shall take a cabin near by so that we can shout at each to ask about where we are going to eat our next meal from our door steps." She said with a small chuckle as the stepped out of the large tent and back into the bright light of day making her blink, for a moment as her eyes adjusted. "I know that there is likely a bit for me to do to get a cabin ready for me to live there comfortably but I am quite excited to get started even if for now my main task will likely be to learn my letters unless someone comes in ill or wounded. Could we start that tonight perhaps after dinner?"

Harlan
Prospective Resident / Patient

The storm that had blessed the city of Edoras with fire-quenching rain that summer had been a curse to Harlan where he lived in the forested foothills of the White Mountains. Lightning had come first, striking the trees surrounding his home and setting it ablaze. Unfortunately, the rain extinguished the storm’s fury too late to salvage his home. It was ironic. After all the months he spent on top of Halifirien manning the beacon, he had never suffered the same fate during violent summer storms that hit the mountains.

In the aftermath, he had tried to survive on his own as he always had. He built a temporary shelter and lived off the land much as he usually did. It was difficult with the loss of his stores when winter came swift and severe, and even when he should have retreated somewhere safe, he held on, loath to leave his beloved mountains behind.

So the man who arrived at the Infirmary in search of temporary shelter was defeated and wrung out and not altogether healthy. Beneath his fur-trimmed cloak, his clothes hung loose on his frame and his shoulders sagged. Copper hair peeked out from beneath his grey hood and he bore a bow and quiver slung over one shoulder. His hound walked a few paces behind, looking healthier than his master.

Though he could not read, he got the idea and washed his hands. Harlan did not get much further before Alwin waved his arms in distress, saying something about no weapons on Infirmary Grounds. Harlan would not have called his gear weapons, but tools of his trade. Too tired to argue, he politely complied and left them behind.

With Alwin’s guidance, Harlan approached Sigrid and Trewyn with his dog at his side. “I was told that one may find temporary accommodation here...” He was not a man who would ask for help, not directly, even when he needed it nor would he would not admit he was unwell.

His body betrayed him. Finally having reached his destination, his adrenaline ran out and the man swayed on his feet. “Is there somewhere I might sit down?”

Trewyn was blinked, and glanced at Sigrid as a man approached lead by Harlan and along side a dog. Even from a ways off it was easy to tell that he'd had a rough go. She caught the wobble in his step and took a few swift steps forward heedless of the dog which had the looks of a thing that could take her arm for a chew toy if she had of
been thinking to offer assistance in keeping him on his feet.

"Lets get you inside to a bed, I think Sigrid will be able to tell you about accommodations but I think we need to make sure you are all right first." She said in a mothering tone like she would her own children come in swaying from not making sure they had enough water on a hot day. This... It seemed worse, he looked - gaunt and weak
and how they had made it to the Infirmary in their condition was beyond Trewyn but she was certain that they could get him back on his feet with some meat on his bones.
"When's the last time you had a proper meal young man?" She asked once she had him supported feeling just how light he was for someone of his frame. Her late husband had been very similar near the end only that was a sickness that they could not tend and help, she could only hope that this young man was not afflicted with the
same sickness her husband had been. There had been no saving him, and she wasn't sure she really wanted her first patient in the infirmary to be a hospice care, as she led him into the tent that they had just exited where she knew there were bed and herbs and tintures. Though she honestly felt a bowl of soup would go a long way if it were just hunger.

"Which bed should we put him on Sigrid?" She asked knowing that the healer would probably know best in this case which bed would work for him before they figured out more permanent accommodations for him after all she'd only JUST gotten her title of Apprentice healer.

The young woman was reluctant to show herself to the healers, and yet she could not wholly avoid it this time... She considered herself quite proficient in all dealings with the horses and riding, and yet this time the mare she had borrowed from the Cavalry stables to take out for a bit of a trot had thrown her and bolted at the site of a mere rabbit sitting on the trail in front of them. Hadassa had unluckily landed on her shoulder, and with mush groaning she had found that it was awfully painful, maybe dislocated, maybe even broken. There was no way for her to fix this by herself, so she had made her way over to the infirmary, trying to keep her injured arm as still as possible with her healthy hand.

It seemed though that the healers were already busy, or so it seemed, and Hadassa hesitated near the door, thinking if she could find some other way to deal with her injury. Perhaps she could ask a comrade to take a look? Or just throw herself against a tree and hope that it would snap her shoulder back in place?

Besides, there was the matter of finding the mare - she had to find the beast and return it to the stables lest she be seen as a horse thief.

There was nothing like a trial by fire to be able to assess a new apprentice, though luckily it was not actually a fire. The thought of the devastating fire that had ripped through the town, still sent a roiling cramp of guilt through her stomach, still to this day wishing she had been there to help. Shaking off the gloomy thoughts, she watched with a soft smile as Trewyn immediately stepped forward to help the man. She was more than willing to allow Trewyn to prove herself, merely staying close so if she did become overwhelmed then she could step in and help.

But as far as she could see, Trewyn was doing alright. Even down to sounding like a mother telling off her boy, which made her force back a soft chuckle. As far as she was concerned Trewyn could mother him all she wanted to, as long as she made sure to check him thoroughly to determine what was wrong with him. She had already noted that he was not coughing, which would hopefully rule out any lung conditions. But it always paid to be on the safe side, the last thing she wanted was for some horrible disease to spread like a wildfire.

"I think we need him over here.." she said in response to Trewyn's question, extending her hand in the direction of a cordoned off area of the tent in the corner. Giving Alwin a nod to go put the weapons away, she stepped in and helped Trewyn get the man to the bed. As she did so, she inconspicuously checked how hot his skin was and also looked at the colouring as well as checked his eyes for any signs of fever or jaundice. She saw nothing untowards, happy enough to step aside and let Trewyn question him as well as see to his immediate needs.

Alwin returned Sigrid's nod, now finally having worked with her long enough that they knew what each other wanted most of the time without having to say it. Shifting the bow to his other hand, he moved to open the flap to the tent and suddenly stopped, almost barrelling right into the woman stood just outside.

"Oh! My most sincere apologies, I did not see you there!" His eyes darted over the woman and while not a healer himself, he could see by the way the woman was holding her arm and how dishevelled the woman looked that something had happened to her. "Are you ok? Do you need help?"
Without giving the woman a chance to answer, he quickly set the bow aside and poked his head back in the tent. "Miss Sigrid!" He called out firmly, making sure not to be too loud

His vision darkened rapidly around the edges and his legs felt suddenly weightless. If Trewyn had not been right there, reaching out to support him, he would have collapsed onto the ground. As it was, he leant much of his weight on her shoulders and did his best to stay upright for her sake. The strength it took to manage left him gasping for breath as the women helped him to the bed. Though he was proud and willful, he no longer had any qualms with letting them help, realizing he was in more trouble than he thought. He began to shiver though he did not feel cold and he clutched his cloak about his neck. The hood had fallen and strands of dull and lank copper hair fell loose to his shoulders. His cheekbones stood out prominently, forming shadows on his bearded face and his freckle-dusted skin was even paler than usual.

When he could finally breathe and speak again, he replied, “I suppose that depends on what you would call a proper meal.” With the tone of voice Trewyn took, he suspected she would not be impressed to hear he had given a fair portion of food to his dog. “But who are you calling young?” He groaned. “I feel as though I’ve aged a decade in these last few months…”

The tawny dog, meanwhile, watched with wide, shining eyes as his master was ushered to the bed. He whined a few times and pawed at his master. “I’m alright, Parry,” Harlan muttered to the dog, reaching out to lay a hand on his head and taking some comfort in it. “Can he stay?” He asked Trewyn, assuming the older woman was in charge here rather than Sigrid. If they refused, he would drag himself outside to sleep under the stars with his loyal friend no matter how cold it got or how ill he was.

Hadassa

She had been lingering, still unsure whether she should leave and handle matters herself (not that she really knew what to do), when someone came out of the tent. The unexpected appearance caused Hadassa to step back and blink a few times; well, now that she had been noticed, it was probably too late to make the escape.

"I... Fell from a horse. Might need a bit of help," she responded hesitantly, when Alwin turned back to her after calling someone in the tent.

"Not a big deal, though," she hastened to add, despite the pain that confronted her for lying in an obvious and tangible way when she moved in a wrong way and upset the injured arm.

Taking care of Harlan

He was both heavy and light and she worked hard to make sure that they both stayed on their feet and was grateful that she'd lived on a farm and had needed to help many a foal to stand - they were far more heavy than this man and she had to lift them. He was far lighter than he should be given his size and he was shivering as she regarded him once he was on the bed, his hood was off and she could see that he was gaunt looking and pale and clutching at his cloak, she pulled a blanket over his shoulders and pressed her hand gently against his forehead, looking for any other cause of his condition but there was not fever to cause the shivering.

"You've not enough grey hairs on your head to be giving me that sort of lip about being called a young man." Trewyn said with a chuckle "And if you are splitting hairs on what makes a proper meal I suppose I am right you just haven't been eating right?" She looked at him and the dog and could guess where the food had been going. "Is there anything else I should be worrying about? Any injuries?" She wasn't overly worried about the dog for the moment, and glanced at him as an injury could have gotten infected perhaps making his condition worse, she couldn't see anything as she looked him over, short of stripping him from his clothing she wasn't sure she'd be able to find any injuries if he'd wrapped them up properly. She did note that he seemed to take comfort in the dog so Trewyn despite not having too much authority being only an apprentice gave a small nod.

"Yes for now though I'll need to confirm that with Miss Sigrid." Seeing that he did get some comfort from the creature she didn't want to take that away in his current condition. She went and fetched some hot water and made the man a cup of herbal tea - with peppermint and alfalfa flowers the peppermint mostly to hide the alfalfa taste which wasn't terrible but she didn't terribly like it and it was soothing on the stomach something that she figured would be important if he hadn't eaten in a while, and the alfalfa would help with digestion of whatever she managed to get into him next, a light soup would likely be best she was figuring, and if she could she'd get him to eat at least a few more times today to get him onto the road to recovery food wise. "What's your name?" She asked softly as she handed him the mug filled with the fragrant tea to drink, the warm liquid would hopefully help with those shivers as well. She'd see about getting him a bath so she could check properly for injuries without causing the man too much distress to his pride and she'd be able to assess just how underweight he was a bit easier, she wondered if Alwin would be alright with making or fetching some sort of soup... She'd ask that once she had the young mans name and had him laying down resting so he didn't topple off of the bed.

Harlan shrank into the blanket, clutching it close around his shoulders. He closed his eyes for a moment but looked at her when she chuckled and though he did not smile, there was a lightness in his eyes. “I suppose you are right…” Though he did not specify whether he agreed about his age or lack of proper meal, and was not sure about it himself. There was something about this woman that was soothing and heartening and he had no wish to disagree with her. She was what he imagined a mother must be. Not knowing his own or even having a surrogate, he could not know for sure.

”Times have been hard since last summer. I lost my home and my food stores to a fire,” he explained. The shivering had slowed and he was able to speak more without having to stutter through chattering teeth. “I thought I could manage on my own through winter. I have always managed before. It seems now that I may have delayed giving up too long…I burned my arm a few weeks back. I did what I could. I washed it, wrapped it with a wet cloth and forgot about it. Last I looked, it did not seem to have improved much.” Slipping up the sleeve of the jumper beneath his cloak revealed a bandage wrapped around his forearm. When unpeeled, the scalded skin, healing poorly and still red and painful to touch, could be seen.

While Trewyn prepared the tea, he swept his fingers through the dog’s fur. Parry was getting on in years now and had been Harlan’s constant friend and companion wherever he went. The dog rested his head on Harlan’s lap, both of them content with the closeness, staying still when Trewyn passed Harlan the tea. He took the warm mug and lifted it to his lips, taking a small sip. Just the scent of the mint was refreshing and the heat wound its way through him. He was not opposed to sleeping on the ground but sitting on a bed was a luxury long-missed and now that he felt its comfort, he hoped they would let the dog stay here with him.

“I am Harlan. This is Parry.” He indicated the dog. “Who may I thank for assisting me so kindly when we did not intend to be any nuisance to you or Miss Sigrid?”

She looked at him as he said what he had done with the burn. Not the best care for a burn especially if one was not eating enough for the body to mend she hadn't felt any fever beneath her hand from an infection in a burn but he was thin and perhaps his body just did not have the strength to fight an infection at all. She very gently peeled back the bandage knowing full well how painful burns could be. She'd suffered them on the farm and had to tend her children when they burned themselves. This though was worse than the burns that she had seen before. She did not touch the wound directly for the moment knowing full well that would be painful as he sipped at the tea she'd made for him.

"My name is Trewyn and it is nice to meet you Harlan and your very well behaved dog though it would have been nicer if you weren't starving with a burn" She said softly. "I am going to clean your burn with some chamomile and rosewater and lavender oil." She said softly "It will help with cleaning it as well as helping with the stinging before I see about putting a salve and a dry bandage on it to help speed healing." She made a note of what she
would need to do this, a bowl and cup, or small pitcher to pour it over the wound. Though she supposed she could dab it with a bit of fabric though that would be far more painful and the mother in her was loath to do something in a more painful method than need be while he continued to drink the tea until the cup was finished.

"Let's get you laying properly on that bed so that if you need to shut your eyes and sleep you're not going to topple off of the bed while I find the things I need to treat that burn for you." She set the cloths that he'd used one wet once upon a time and the bandage that had once held the wet cloth against the wound as well as the cup on a near by table for the time being. She pulled the blanket down so that he could slip his legs under it to stay warm since he was so thin. "I'll be back as quickly as I can be." She said and gave Harlan a gentle pat on his shoulder and headed to to get the wash items that she knew she would be able to find by their scents alone, she looked at the salves and tried to read the labels on them and there were a few that started with Ma but she wasn't sure which one it was but decided that would be a terrible idea she had no way to confirm what a salve was.

She headed to Sigrid a bit nervous "Excuse me Sigrid, I - I need some marigold (calendula) salve with royal jelly for a burn - I have everything I need to wash it - lavender oil, rosewater and chamomile, our friend has a burn that isn't healing well and marigold and royal jelly is one of the better things but I couldn't find it, or read that name I don't want to put the wrong salve on the burn." She paused for a moment and bit her bottom lip.

"And he's got his dog with him Parry, he's wanting to know if the dog can stay with him it's a well behaved dog and I'm worried he will try to go sleep outside with the dog if we don't let him, he fed his dog before he fed himself." She said softly. Trewyn never let a dog stay in the house and wasn't sure on letting a dog stay in a healing tent. Perhaps she could offer the dog to stay with her in her new cabin at night if Sigrid said no to keep the dog in awarm place and hopefully Harlan in a bed where he would heal better with better sleep.

Afird Splitax Prospective Resident / Patient

With a dwarf boot tucked under either armpit and his heavy pack upon his back, Afird limped towards the tent in the middle of some old wooden buildings. He was directed to the infirmary by the locals. The EDORAS INFIRMARY set up the tent to help the victims of a great fire rage and ravaged the area. He paused before the tent, looking down at his wounded feet and lower legs, wondering how he would explain how it happened. He still did not know for sure himself.

A few weeks ago, he left Minas Tirith after journeying with some folk searching for the herb, Athelas. He decided to take a different route home. He travelled the Great West Road until he came to the Folde. There he veered off, searching for the double row of ancient and worn standing stones that he had heard existed near Dunharrow. As he made his way, he encountered a pretty lass sitting by one of the stones.

She was short in stature with an open face and deep-set eyes - eyes dark as midnight. She had nut-brown hair and smooth dark skin. Afird stared at first in surprise, then smiled broadly, for there was a beauty about her that one could not deny. She was shy at first and stayed half-hidden behind the stone. But after several nods and bows from the dwarf, she let down her guard and laughed. All thoughts and deeds left Afird's mind at the sound of her laughter. Her laugh was rich and rippling, causing him to laugh too and lose himself in its pure merriment. He didn't remember much after that except running after her trying to catch her up. She led him on a merry chase through a pine wood, over rocks and thick thickets. At last stopping near a shallow ford, she turned and laughed again, then sped off like a white-tailed deer.

Afird stood in the water with his boots in his hands, mouth agape. He could chase her no more. And like a dream, he woke up from it.
His legs and feet were bloody, for, at some point, he had taken off his boots. He suddenly felt the fool. What enchantment had taken him over, he knew not.

Shaking his head as he remembered his adventure, he decided he would not let the healers know of it, for he was sure that he would not soon forget the mysterious girl and her earthly beauty. It would be his secret. He would tell them he fell. And so, limping into the tent, he said.
"Greetings! Can someone please assist me?"

Harlan bit the inside of his mouth as she peeled away the bandages and was surprised the tender flesh did not come away, too, for it felt like it would. It did not seem to have healed much at all since he last checked. He knew he should have done more for it, but there were many things he likely should have done differently that seemed simple now that he was here. His preoccupation with his plight of hunger had overruled the fire’s pain, as he had done it while roasting game over an open flame. The last meat he had eaten, in fact.

He grimaced at her commentary on his state. “Trewyn, I think our meeting may be a blessing in disguise for one of us though I can’t argue with you about that.” It was too true and it hit him hard: weak and desperate for help were far from how he normally saw himself. There was no denying it especially as he laid upon the bed and Parry settled in beside him.

“I’ve made it this long,” he told her, “don’t hurry on my account.” Between the blanket and the hound, he felt warmer than he had in recent memory. “We’re going to be fine now,” he murmured to the dog who was already lost to the succor of sleep. Lacking the energy or strength to lift his head and watch the healer go about her work, Harlan tried to imagine the sky above at night and all the stars he had once named in the long watchful nights on the beacon hill, but even the quiet refuge of his mind took too much out of him. He tried to stay awake but his eyelids felt heavier and heavier the more he fought sleep.

Sigrid
Healer

Sigrid's head shot up as she heard her name called, eyes wide at the sudden influx of patients. "When it rains, it pours.." she mumbled to herself, giving Trewyn and her new patient one more look before deciding to leave Trewyn to it for now. Brushing the flap of the tent aside, she peered out to see what was going on, noting Alwin stood with the weapons still, next to a visibly dishevelled woman who was cradling her arm. Giving the woman a quick look over, she made a few guesses as what could be the issue.

"Please, come inside and let's have a look and see what is going on. My name is Sigrid by the way, yours?" Giving the woman a smile, she flicked her eyes to Alwin and silently thanked him before adding "I might need you help once you have stored those weapons." At the mention of the weapons, her eyes went to the woman's waist, looking to see if she was carrying anything that would need to be handed over as well, but before she could finish, her attention was drawn to yet another patient arriving.

Had she ever even seen an actual dwarf before? She honestly could not recall, though managed to keep the surprise away from her expression and remained professional. "I am Sigrid, I am the healer here, how can I be of assistance?" Again her eyes lowered to look for weapons that would need to be stored, indicating to Alwin to help both the woman and the dwarf if need be. "Please, hand your weapons to Alwin, he will make sure they are kept safe while you are tended to. House rule.." she said with a wink and then held the flap of the tent open for them both, "Please, come inside and we will see what we can do for you both."

She had only just stepped back inside the tent when Trewyn came over with a question. Pleased that the woman had not just tried to guess her way to picking out a salve, she gave her a warm smile. "Of course." Turning to Hadassa and Afird, she pointed out two seperate beds and gestured for them to have a seat. "Please, have a seat and I will be right back with you.."

Heading over to the large cupboard in the back, she quickly picked out the salve needed and passed it to Trewyn. As this was not the time for any reading lessons, she made a mental note to practise reading that salve tonight when things had calmed down, but for now she still had two patients to assess.

Trewyn smiled thanks Sigrid as she handed her the needed salve noting where it had come from in the cupboard went after Alwin for a moment. "Alwin I'm sorry to bother you but I don't suppose you could bring me a cup of soup for our first patient? I'd like to get something with a bit more nutrients in him than tea thank you." Alwin who looked like he was about to have more weapons than he knew what to do with gave a nod that that was something he could do before Trewyn and headed back over to Harlan. The dog was sound asleep and Harlan looked like he was well on his way to being the same. She worked on mixing the wash that she was going to use to clean the burn since it did not look happy, it would both clean the wound and help speed healing while helping dull the pain after washing her hands once more now that she had all her materials.

"Harlan" She said softly. "I need you to stay awake a bit longer dear." She gently touched his shoulder once she finished with the wash that she was going to use setting it on the table beside him "I need to clean the burn and dress it, and there is a cup of soup on its way for you." She said softly making sure he was awake his eyes opened up and she helped him to sit up. "We'll keep you wrapped up aside from that arm as this is not going to feel nice I"m afraid." She said softly setting a basin near his arm to catch the liquids so that it wouldn't soil the bed and leave it damp. She picked up a clean piece of gauze and looked at Harlan. "Hopefully Parry won't get too mad at me for this." She said and gently pressed the gauze to his arm and poured the mixture over the burn. Dabbing and making sure that the liquid got into every part of the angry damaged skin. She had no doubt the light dabbing would hurt some but it needed to be done. She made sure that the entire wound was doused and left it to settle to help numb the wound before she applied a dose of the salve spreading it as gently as she could with her finger tips.

She had no doubt that it hurt greatly despite her attempts to treat it as she would children when they had burned themselves being too rambunctious around a fire and had gotten their hands burned. It was not left as long as this but their tears had broken her heart even as she had tended them she worked hard to steel herself so that she could finish the salve in place she laid clean dry bandages over it so that the salve would stay in place finishing just as Alwin re-entered the tent with a mug of the requested soup.

Setting the soiled gauze and the basin now filled with the remainder of the wash aside and the calendula salve set aside she nodded her thanks to Alwin who was off again as she held the cup waiting to see if Harlan yet had the strength to sip at the soup. Looking at it, she was certain it was a bone broth with root vegetables in it perhaps a bite or two of meat cooked twice soft and easy to swallow with little chewing. Perfect as far as she was concerned for Harlan in his state.

Harlan
Patient
with Trewyn

In the warm, comfortable bed, his body heavy with exhaustion, it was a struggle to stay awake. Harlan was somewhere in between sleep and waking when a woman’s gentle voice stirred him. At first, he did not recall where he was or why there was a woman saying his name. The hand on his shoulder roused him further and he blinked his bleary eyes at the healer. Half-asleep still, she ushered him up to sitting, causing a bout of dizziness that sent the Infirmary spinning around him.

He hunched forward and rubbed his eyes with his hand until it passed and he was ready for her to tend his arm. “Do what you must,” he told her, “don’t worry about me.” The dog’s ears twitched at the sound of his name or the more distant noise of new patients arriving before returning his chin to his paws and closing his eyes again. “I think he’ll behave. He’s as tired as I am.”

Holding out his arm for Trewyn, he gritted his teeth and prepared himself. It was about as bad as he expected. It felt like his arm burnt all over again when the liquid touched the raw skin and he squeezed his eyes shut and looked away as if somehow not witnessing it would lessen the pain. The next part was worse. A single groan expressed his feelings quite plainly but he uttered no word of complaint. It was for the best and she worked quickly. Soon the cooling effects of the salve began to soothe instead of sting.

“My thanks,” he managed to say as she finished bandaging his arm. The steaming broth should have smelled good, made his stomach rumble or made him want to scarf it down, but he felt too weary for hunger. Knowing that couldn’t be good, he forced down a small sip. “Is there something Parry might eat? I will pay you back in full when I can. I know it doesn’t look like it, but I am a hunter. I can catch game in return for your hospitality.”

She nodded he'd suffered the treatment with a stoic silence until she had begun applying the salve itself. Even then it was hardly an equal complaint to the pain that she knew she was causing, it was no easier to do such a treatment on a stranger than it was her own children that was for certain. Hopefully when they checked it tomorrow they would see some sort of improvement in it though it would be long in healing. She prayed it would be less red and angry tomorrow which would mean hopefully the next batch of salve would hurt less in the applying. She stood patiently and watched as he sipped down a tiny bit of the food. From the looks of it he was fairly far along having been starved so she decided she was going to stay and chat with him, and make sure Parry as good of a dog as he was - didn't end up the recipient of the mug of soup.

"I am sure we have some food for him, but he can wait until tomorrow; he - unlike you is in excellent shape comparatively and we can let him sleep until tomorrow." She said softly tidying up the gauze and the basin so that once Harlan was finished she could put the basin and the used gauze to be cleaned and made ready for the next patient.

She nodded as he offered to hunt. "I've no doubt you can when you are hale and hearty, but you need to heal your arm, and get some weight back on your bones until I can't carry you around like a sack of potatoes. So until then." She motioned that he should take yet another sip of the soup. The more he got in him the better she would feel. After all the tea she had given him would help him digest the food so he wouldn't feel terribly ill.

"I will make sure that when we get you some breakfast broth that we have something for him as well." She glanced at the dog she knew what she would feed him but Harlan may have specific food he allowed the dog, she knew some people were very specific on what they let their dogs eat and Parry seemed more of a hunting dog or at least trained companion than any dog she had ever had. Her dogs were good for barking at strangers and creatures to keep them from the garden and the chicken coop. "Take another sip dear and then tell me what sort of food you've been feeding Parry that way we don't change his diet too terribly."

Afird Splitax Prospective Resident / Patient

The tent flap opened as he noticed another person waiting beside him; she appeared to be holding her arm gently against herself. He thought possible arm injury as a woman with blue eyes looked out from the tent and addressed the injured woman. She then turned her to him, and a look of surprise crossed her face as though she had never seen the likes of a dwarf before. Afird's cheeks reddened at this, and he bowed low and nodded to cover his surprise at this reaction. He slowly followed both women into the large tent and made his way to a bed that the healer (he assumed) instructed him to do.
As he lowered himself on the bed, his legs throbbing uncomfortable, he turned to the woman with the injured arm and smiled at her. Attempting to rise and introduce himself properly with a bow and a nod, he wavered and fell back down onto the bed with a plop. His legs pained him too much at this point. He was beginning to worry that his foolishness in the mountains with the lass would be worse than he thought and that his legs would never be the same. Attempting to banish these thoughts from his mind, he turned again to the woman (Hadassa @Pele Alarion ) and said.
'Greetings! Afird Spitax at your service! I would stand and introduce myself properly, but my legs have just given out on me." He looked down at his legs to indicate that they were injured. Looking up at the woman, he looked at her arm, nodding his head.
"I see you, too, have gotten hurt. I fell," Afird lied, not wishing to explain the real reason for the cut and bruised legs. "What happened to your arm, if I may ask?"

Harlan
Patient
with Trewyn

It seemed Trewyn was on to him. Harlan was unable to sneak any sips or morsels of meat to Parry under her watchful gaze so he let his faithful companion get some much-needed rest. “Very well,” he quietly agreed, obeisant, and took a few more sips of broth more to please her than for wanting it himself. Every mouthful and every movement took a tremendous amount of effort as if a heavy weight clamped down on his body.

“How long do you think it will take until I am no longer a sack of potatoes?” Though he joked, he was keen to know. Being helpless and frail and relying on others made him uncomfortable. He wanted to be back on his feet in the woods again soon. Spring promised bountiful life followed by long days of summer, which could allow him to rebuild and resettle in the mountains. If he was ready. If not, he faced the prospect of remaining here, so close to the city where he would never feel at home and did not know what he would do with himself. The thought was sobering and he dug into the broth with a bit more enthusiasm even though chewing the meat made his jaw ache. The bowl was empty when he passed it to Trewyn.

“He is a better hunter than me by far, though he is getting on a bit…” He gave the snoozing hound a melancholic look, wondering how much time they had left together. “His preferred prey is rabbit, but being a dog,” he smiled, “he will eat whatever you give him. As will I if it will help me regain my strength.”

He eased himself back into the bed while trying not to wake his dog and pulled the blanket close. “If you have other work and patients to see, please do not stay for my sake. I will survive thanks to you, and I feel…as though I cannot stay awake…anymore.” As he spoke, Harlan’s eyes drooped closed and his head fell to one side as he fell asleep within moments. Trewyn
Apprentice Healer
With Harlan and Afird Splitax

She sat quietly as he asked how long it would be before he wasn't a sack of potatoes. "The more we can get you eating and sleeping the sooner you'll be more you and less potato. We can't let you go too fast as if you eat too much you will go the wrong way." She said softly giving him a pat as she took the bowl away. She caught the look he gave and nodded as he suggested rabbit for the dog, she'd see what she could do. She couldn't help but chuckle at the comment about anything as long as it would help him regain is strength.

He eased back into bed and pulled the blanket close and was almost out before he finished his sentence. She got him another blanket and put it over his legs knowing it could get cool at night while he slept especially since he didn't have any real strencth. She cleaned up about Harlan quickly putting the basin and items to wash.

Looking around Trewyn saw Sigrid was still with the young woman who looked like she had a broken arm. But there was... a Dwarf? She suppose that's what the stout looking person was. She'd never seen one before being a country woman from near Gondors border. She'd never actually seen a Dwarf before but she had heard well enough that the men and women looked the same she hoped that wasn't a bold lie or she'd look like quite the country bumpkin. She was about to put the salve away when she saw the dwarfs legs and decided to keep it in hand. Marigold salve was good for healing all wounds that were open. She had no doubt she'd need something to lessen the pain but she wasn't worried about this young man, woman...dwarf?

"Hello." She said approaching the dwarf and looking at her? His? feet and lower legs. She set the salve down on the table beside the bed that he was sitting on and sat down on a chair facing him since she would be needing to be looking at their feet. "I'm Trewyn, an apprentice here. Can you tell me your name and how you like to be um... referred to? As well as what happened to your legs?" She could see there was a bit of blood from where they had tried to stand for a bit it looked like. Glancing at them they looked like the cuts would be painful but she'd need to look closer to see if perhaps any of them needed stitches. She'd definitely need to properly wash and clean these wounds that was for certain.

Hadassa
Searching for a healing touch

It seemed that she had happened to come here at quite a busy time: apparently there were already patients within, and another joined her by the tent. Once again Hadassa considered backing away and trying to deal with the injury herself, but then again it was too late, when the healer invited the two of them inside.

"The name's Hadassa," she spoke when the healer introduced herself, and then added: "Ah, the dagger..." the young woman had no issues with giving up her weapons when visiting certain places, though the easy movement of unbuckling the belt with the sheath on it took much longer now that one of her arms was near to useless. Keeping the guilty body part as immobile as possible, she managed to take off the only weapon she had and give it to Alwin.

Once in the tent, Hadassa sat on the indicated bed and followed Sigrid's bustling for a moment, before looking at Afird who to her inexperienced and distracted mind seemed but a very bearded and slightly peculiar human, perhaps from some unknown land. "Nice to meet you. I'm Hadassa," she replied and shook her head to indicate that there was no need for any special greeting manners. "Couldn't handle my horse properly so..." her voice trailed off, as she didn't quite like the idea of admitting that she might not be as good at riding and dealing with horses as she liked to think.

While she did not feel like talking much, she found herself observing Afird and his injuries with certain curiosity. Could someone get such damage from a simple fall? Then it would have to be a fall from some high wall of rocks with legs getting beat up all the way down; or that was what she imagined. She couldn't help but wonder what he had been up to, but instead she chose to observe how Trewyn would deal with it.

Afird Splitax Prospective Resident / Patient
As Afird waited for the woman (Hadassa) to respond to his question, a healer approached and introduced herself to the dwarf as, Trewyn. She appeared to be an older woman with greying hair. This pleased Afird right from the start, for the healer would have experience under her belt and years of knowledge. He never thought to see the day when he too would be yearning for the old ways like many of the elder dwarves do yet; here, he was approaching his middle-age and starting to think likewise.
Acknowledging the healer's questions, Afird attempted to stand, but his legs ached and itched and burned, causing him to grunt and frown at not rising and greeting Trewyn in a proper dwarven fashion. He slumped down on the bed and looked up at her, his cheeks rouged by his embarrassment, and said.
'My apologies, good healer! Afird Splitax at your service! I have been a damn fool and seem to have hurt my legs
and can not rise respectfully to greet thee
.'
He drew a hand across his brow and sighed, his fingers moving over the ridged scar of the first injury he acquired since he left home: from table dancing in a pub in Minas Tirith. Looking up at the healer, he smiled crookedly and said in a low voice so as none could hear.
'I was chasing this lass as if I was in a trance. She had me running through the mountainside near Dunharrow, over jagged rocks, through thistles and a pathless forest. I had taken off my dwarf boots at some point, and yes, my feet cut too. Then I was standing in a stream, and she disappeared around a rock for good, causing me to realize how bad off my legs were. I heard tales that strange and ancient beings live in those mountains, wild men with unique powers. The lass that I encountered was indeed memorable, wild and enchanting. She had me acting the fool.' Signing once more, he asked.

'Can you help a fool of a dwarf, Trewyn?'

Trewyn for her part reached out as if to keep the dwarf seated as he looked like he was about to try to stand on his wounded feet but his feet as soon as he tried to stand did her job for her.

"NO worries Afird Splitax, and do not worry, your greeting is kind and well met even if you can not greet me as you traditionally would." She said with a soft smile and put a hand on the dwarfs knee and leaned forwards so that she could hear him for he spoke so quietly. She blinked hearing his tale and gave a small frown at Dunharrow... she'd not heard of the Drug there yet from what the dwarf was saying he'd caught sight of one, or perhaps the ghost of one from the second age.

"I couldn't tell you what you saw - we have tales of the Woses and the Druedain and it sounds like that is a person that you saw, but..." She hesitated not wanting to tell the dwarf they'd not lived in Dunharrow in an age, they were all in the Drúadan Forest that she knew of - though perhaps they could have made a pilgrimage. "the good news is I should be able to help you get back on your feet." She said with a gentle smile.

"We'll have to wash your legs and get the dirt from all those scrapes and cuts and see if there are any bad enough that they need stitches." She said calmly. She looked over the dwarfs legs and decided that she was going to need a much larger basin this time than last and that she would likely stick with cloves for this one as this was not a burn so the extra herbs she'd added the last time were not needed and she was certain she'd seen cloves at the very least in the cupboard.

She stood and got a large basin and set it at the dwarfs feet with a smile and went off to get a few pitchers of warm water - no need to shock the poor dwarfs body with cold water before heading to the cupboard where the herbs were stored. She did see cloves there and she looked at it closely and then looked at the oils, eventually finding one with the word clove on and she pulled it down and gave a smell and was absolutely certain she was right before heading back to the dwarf with it and some clean bandages.

"Alright Afird I'm going to clean your legs, I'm going to start with water to get the worst of the blood and dirt off before we start looking at the individual cuts and scrapes themselves alright?" She said lifting the first pitcher of water with one hand and being very very grateful she'd spent her life on a farm dealing with hay and animals and children or she was certain her arm would have shaken something fierce from the weight of the full pitcher. With that she began the task of gently pouring the water over his legs starting just below his knees, using her fingers to gently wash way the worst of the dirt from them with the large basin beneath him catching the run off.

Xyler
Prospective Apprentice

The sun beat down on the world, good for growing grass, but Xyler wasn't quite used to it. He was more used to the mountains, where it tended to be cooler, thanks to the giant mount of dirt blocking the sun so much, casting the valley his village lay in into pleasant shaded bliss. He paused to wipe the sweat from his forehead, wondering how long it might take him to get adjusted to this different climate, and looked at the glistening city in the distance. His grandmother had told him it was lovely, but the young man had never seen it before. It seemed she was quite right, or at least what he could see of it from here.

Feeling hopeful, while at the same time a little uncertain, the teenager brushed his blond hair back from where it was trying to be plastered to his forehead and plowed onward through the tall grass, wondering how the Rohan folks don't get lost in it all. They must be taller than him, he thought with annoyance. Xyler kept his grumblings to himself, however, quickening his pace so that he might reach the city where he had been sent to receive further training. He didn't want to let his grandmother down merely because it was too hot and grassy for him. He smirked in amusement at the thought of that conversation, and hummed a little to himself as he continued on, adjusting his pack on his shoulders.

At last, arriving at the city, it didn't take too much effort to locate the infirmary. As he figured, it was common knowledge where it was, so asking someone to direct him was easy. The young healer-in-training paused to take a drink and wipe his forehead again before entering, a little unsure who to speak to. He stood quietly in what must be the reception area, fighting a wave of nervousness and hoping that someone would come along soon that could help him.

Sigrid
Healer

Since joining as a healer here, she had never seen it this busy before. It both warmed her heart that things seemed to be picking up, but also made her feel guilty for feeling that way as she saw the pain and discomfort on the patients faces. At least she now had Trewyn, so that they could see all of the patients in a timely manner, gladly leaving the older woman to tend to the exhausted man and the dwarf. If an elf was going to show up as well she did not know what she would do with herself.

Shaking the thought away, she headed over to the woman. She had said her name was Hadassa if she recalled correctly given that so many names had been exchanged in such a short amount of time. Given the grime on the woman's face and dishelleved clothes, it was easy enough to surmise there had been a fall, even if the woman had not offered the information up already. She could however not tell if the woman was her age or older, not that it really mattered.

"Sorry to keep you, Hadassa." She said as she stepped over to the woman's bed, her eyes flitting across the woman to see if there were any other cuts and bruises that needed tending to, as well as making sure to look the woman in her eyes. Uneven pupils were often a sign of head injuries and the last thing she wanted was for that to go unnoticed. Giving Trewyn and Afird a warm smile she pulled the curtain closed between the two beds to give a little more privacy.

"I will have to feel along the shoulder, to see if it is broken or not, I will try and be as gentle as I can be. Ok?" Knowing that the unknown could make it worse, Sigrid worked as quickly as she could, sure fingers prodding as gently as she could as she felt along the collarbone. "Hmmm.." she mused as her fingers lightly found the area where the woman's shoulder had popped out of it's socket. Withdrawing her hands, she gave Hadassa a reassuring smile.

"It's fixable, but it will hurt." While being blunt, she did try and soften the blow with the tone with which she said it in. She eyed the woman for a moment and then asked "Would you like something for the pain before I pop it back in? I will make sure you have something for after regardless though." That was delivered in a tone that brooked no argument.

Getting up, she pulled the curtain aside a bit, waiting for Hadassa to respond before she went to get Alwin to help. Though as soon as she pulled it aside and stepped forward, she nearly bumped into yet another person who had just entered the tent.

"Whoa!" Flustered she took a step back and eyed the newcomer. "Sorry about that, did not see you there!" Not seeing anything immediately wrong with the young man, apart from him sweating, which was about as normal as anything in this heat, she asked "Are you hurt? If not, then mayhaps you can help me.." she said as she eyed him critically, noting that he should have the strength to counterpull.

Xyler
Prospective Apprentice

There were a variety of sounds all around, and Xyler was wondering why this place was set up in a tent, rather than an actual building. Was that common? He'd never really been much further than beyond the little village where he grew up, so he felt a bit behind in his knowledge of certain things. As someone came bursting out from behind a curtain, Xyler hastily leaped back as the lady nearly bumped into him. "Sorry, ma'am!" He apologized quickly, shaking his head as he heard her question. "No, I'm not hurt. Actually I-" He paused, a little surprised to hear her suggest he could help her, and grinned. "That's actually why I've come, ma'am. I suppose you're the head healer? My grandmother sent me. She..well I, want to enlist as an apprentice. She suggested I come here for better training." He explained, already curious what sort of 'help' he could offer when the lady didn't even know yet if he had any experience, which he did. "I'd be happy to help. What do you need me to do? Does that mean you accept my application?" He added as a joke.

The young man was aware he probably spoke a bit different from the regular Rohir folks here, but hoped that wouldn't make too much difference. Having grown up almost right on the border between Gondor and Rohan, he'd picked up a mixture of both accents. Those in Gondor said he spoke with a Rohir accent, while those on Rohan said he spoke with a Gondorian accent. It was somewhere in between, yet he could easily communicate with anyone who spoke either language. His grandmother had told him that his mother had been from Gondor, while his father was Rohirric, so it seemed rather fitting, to him, that he should speak both equally. "I'm Xyler by the way." he added to get that out of the way. He knew well enough about his odd name as well, though his grandmother had an explanation for that as well. Still, he hoped not to encounter too many questions, as he had little answers to give.

Hadassa
Getting fixed up

Hadassa patiently sat and allowed Sigrid to check her shoulder, though she did take in a sharp breath when the healer had come to the affected spot.

"Well..."
she said hesitantly, "Fixable is good enough for me. And maybe a bit of something wouldn't go amiss - the silly horse bolted and left me to walk here in some pain." While she did complain about the horse, she was not sure it would have been any better to ride here; walking was probably easier on that shoulder. Besides... There was no shame in having something to soothe the pain, right - there were no other warriors here to look down on her for being weak.

It seemed that infirmary had turned out to be something of a favourite spot lately, as yet someone else had entered. Not to get healed though, as she gathered from the conversation between Sigrid and Xyler. Somewhat curious and aiming to turn her thoughts away from the hurt shoulder, Hadassa listened in to the conversation.

Sigrid
Healer

Ma'am. Sigrid felt the now all too familiar pain in her heart, quickly brushing it aside. There was no way the boy could have known and it was afterall a common way of adressing women that were older than themselves. But it still hurt. Refusing to allow her mind to drift to thoughts of Éo, she gave the young man a forced smile, hoping it didn't look too forced, though her eyebrow did rise slowly as he began rambling about becoming an apprentice.

While she eyed him critically, her features softened as she warmed to his jovial nature, even though it further reminded her of Éolath. Letting out a soft chuckle, she shook her head, if only to rid her of her sombre thoughts. "We will see.." she said with a wink as she began stepping past him. "I am Sigrid and yes, I need your help." her voice trailed off as she headed to a large cupboard at the back of the tent, quickly rifling through the many labelled bottles. Picking out what she needed, she grabbed a sheet on the way back and pushed it into Xyler's hands after critically eyeing them to make sure they were clean.

"Unfold this and scrunch it into a long 'rope'," she said as she headed out of the tent for just a second, returning quickly with a steaming kettle. Dropping the herbs into a cup on the small table next to Hadassa's bed, she quietly poured the hot water over them and left them to steep for a long moment before handing the cup to Hadassa. "Drink it slowly, it's hot.." she said smirking softly at the obvious statement.

Giving Hadassa time to drink the tea, she turned towards Xyler and took the sheet back. She waited patiently for Hadassa to finish before carefully wrapping the sheet around the woman. "Ok, lets get you up unto the bed, on your back.." she said as she helped the woman lay down, not caring about whether the boots would stain the sheets. Keeping the rolled sheet at an angle, she looked at Xyler and beckoned him closer. "Alright, time to use that youthful strength of yours, I need you to hold the sheet and not let me pull it from your grasp, understood?" Eyeing him for a moment to see if he had any questions, she stepped to the other side of the bed and looked at Hadassa's injured shoulder.

"Right.. are you both ready?" She only briefly looked at Xyler before her eyes turned to Hadassa. "I need you to relax as much as you can, ok? The more you tense, the more it will hurt.."

Xyler
Prospective Apprentice

Xyler was in luck today, it would seem, for he had just run into the head healer. Literally. He was glad to know he'd be able to be of some use right away, and that might have some impact on him being accepted as an apprentice. "Pleased to meet you, Healer Sigrid." He answered politely as he took the sheet, nodding as he began following instructions, wondering a little about what they would be doing with it. Swiftly twisting the sheet into a long rope, his eyes followed the healer as she went back and forth grabbing this and that, then he followed with the twisted-up sheet as she went in to where a patient was. "Hello," He greeted Hadassa with a friendly smile.

He started to move forward to help Sigrid to get the patient onto the bed, but she seemed to have it under control before he got there, so he stepped back again and watched how Sigrid positioned the sheet. He quickly understood what the goal was here; he'd done this before, and nodded vaguely to himself as he saw what the healer intended to do. "Yes ma'am," He answered with a more noticeable nod to her as he took hold of the ends of the sheet in a strong grip. "Ready when you are." He answered.

As he held onto the ends of the sheets, he couldn't help thinking back to when his friend was hurt, and he had to patch her up.. they'd been arguing and bickering the whole time, so she was distracted by the time he actually put her shoulder back in, and she hadn't had a chance to tense up. It had been partly intentional, to distract her, but it was also just fun to rile the girl up, partly because she made it so easy. Too bad he didn't know this patient, or he might have tried something similar. Then again, he didn't really know any of these people, and wasn't sure what to expect around here.

Hadassa
Getting fixed up

It seemed that there was not much else she could do, so Hadassa just sat and felt somewhat awkward being the object of care. When the healer had fixed the tea for her to drink, she carefully took it in the good hand, lest she move the other - attached to the injured shoulder - too much and spill the hot liquid all over herself and cause even more damage. For a few moments she breathed in the scent of the tea thinking that it would probably not be too delicious, and then attempted a careful small sip. She was right: the tea tasted rather bitter, and yet she managed not to let it show on her face, as she tried to sip it as quickly as possible.

"I'm dirty though..." Hadassa objected, when she had set the empty cup back down on the table and found herself being all but wrapped in a sheet-rope. She wondered whether she'd have to wash the sheets once she was fixed up properly - not only her boots were muddy, but most of her clothing was a muddy mess, and she was likely to transfer most of it to the clean sheets.

"I'll try my best to relax," she promised, though it was easier said than done; besides, she felt somewhat self-conscious in the presence of the young guy, unwilling to appear a weakling lass. "All right..." Hadassa muttered, deliberately forcing her tense muscles to relax if even a little bit and taking longer slower breaths. And yet, she wondered if she would ever be properly ready for more pain, tea or no tea.

Sigrid kept a close eye on Hadassa for several reasons. One was because she needed to find the right time to jerk the woman's dislocated shoulder back into place, the other because she had put some mandrake into her tea. Not a lot, just enough to ensure that the woman would release some of the tension that naturally came with the thought of imminent pain. Hopefully it would make her drowsy enough that she forgot to tense. She was pretty sure that she had calculated the woman's weight correctly, however sometimes people still reacted differently. She would have to wait and see if Hadassa would even be affected by it or not. She hoped for the woman's sake that it would as otherwise this was going to hurt. A lot.

Even as she watched for the signs, she chatted away about this and that, though at one point her eyes flicked to the young man across the bed from her and gave him an almost imperceptive look once she thought Hadassa was ready. She hoped she had given the lad enough time to brace himself as she finally yanked as hard as she could on the sheets, breath held that she was not going to end up on her ass with the poor woman on top of her, likely screaming in even more pain.

Xyler listened, somewhat relieved to hear the healer talking with the patient, the same idea he'd had. While she spoke to the patient, Xyler kept a firm grip on his ends of the sheet, braced and ready, knowing that Sigrid would probably make her move just when one would least expect it. He had to be ready whenever that moment came, and tried his best not to get distracted. At last, he saw her glance toward him briefly, with a nod that would have been easy to miss if he hadn't been watching her. He was glad she'd given him a signal to get ready, though he was already braced. Keeping his grip tight, he made sure that the sheet didn't slip. It would be terrible to mess up on his first day and cause further injury to a patient, as well as to the healer, after all.

Hadassa
Being a patient

For quite a while she anxiously expected the painful pulling to take place, but the longer it did not, and the longer Sigrid talked of all sorts of things, Hadassa slowly relaxed, and would have nodded off under the influence of the calming voice - or was it that tea?

All of a sudden it came - so suddenly that all she could manage to do was inhale sharply and open her mouth to cry out, but the cry did not come. Against her best wishes of not looking silly Hadassa remained with her mouth open for quite a few moment, until she exhaled again.

"That was... was... awfully surprising," she commented, quite breathless.

The popping sound was more than audible and a satisfactory one at that. Painful, sure, but it was a wanted sound as it meant that Hadassa's shoulder had popped back into where it belonged. Unfortunately it was not always that easy. She had several patients where they had worked hours to manipulate the bone back to where it should be, often because tendons and muscles had seized up. But while she felt bad about causing the woman further pain, she knew it was necessary and with a relieved smile she gently lowered Hadassa's arm back onto the womans chest.

"Sorry about that, Hadassa. But the good news is, I think it was successful.." Soft fingers gently probed the shoulder, feeling for anything out of place. She knew it would be painful to the touch for a while yet, but it was important that she made sure it really had settled back in correctly. Satisfied with her probing, Sigrid gently patted the woman's "good" hand. "All good!"

Holding her arm gently, Sigrid nodded her head to Xyler and indicated for him to slide the sheet out and once done she placed the arm back where it was. "Now you just rest and sleep off that tea. Once you wake I will secure your arm in a sling, where you will have to keep it for at least a week. Though you will not be able to do any hard work or lifting for quite a while.." She gave Hadassa a look that more than clearly brooked no argument and with a small nod of her head she called for Xyler to follow her as she left Hadassa to sleep off the effects of the mandrake.

Reaching out she pushed the flaps of the tent open and stepped into the sunlight, taking just a second to relish the feel of the sunlight on her face. With a happy sigh she turned to the young man, giving him a grateful smile. "That was really well handled, thank you for the help. Now what is this about you wanting to be an apprentice?"

At last, the dreaded deed was done, and Xyler relaxed his hold on the sheet once the healer had stopped pulling on the patient's arm. He was glad it had gone smoothly, he hated seeing people in pain and it would have been tough having to watch this drag on more lengthily, had it not worked properly on the first try. Even more to his relief, the patient didn't yell or cry or anything. He was glad for that, he also hated seeing women cry, and wasn't the best at making it stop. Observing the healer, he felt sure that was the same that his grandma would have done, and smiled slightly to himself as he shook out the sheet, trying to fold it while the healer spoke to the patient. It was a bit difficult, but he managed. A bit sloppily, but it was folded. He laid it aside, then followed the healer out of the patient's room.

"Thank you, for allowing me to help." He answered, having worried that he'd have to wait weeks or more before they allowed him to really do anything of importance, being new, and young. Smiling, he glanced out across the fields, somewhat surprised to think how far he'd traversed recently, as she asked about his intentions to become an apprentice. "Yes ma'am, I would very much like to be one, if you've got no objection." He grinned. "I've come quite a ways," he motioned toward the distant line of mountains, toward Gondor. "There's a little village off that way, and my grandmother is the village healer there. She taught me all she could, but she said I ought to have further training, and suggested I come here for it." He explained. "I've helped her since I was...pretty young. As long as I can remember, really. She'd send me out to find herbs, or to get bandages, or whatever. When I got older she started having me help in more direct ways. Like I just did for you." He paused, wondering if he was talking too much... he'd figured he ought to give the healer a good idea of what sort of experience he had, but he didn't want to ramble on and on, either. "So... am I accepted?" he wondered, a little anxious.

Her face fell for just the briefest of moments as he told her of how he had learned from his grandmother. Her thoughts instantly went to her own upbringing that sounded exactly like his, fondly rembering the many nights sat by the fire as her grandmother helped her memorise the many herbs and their uses. Drawing in a deep breath, she was glad to hear that it sounded like his grandmother was still alive, unlike hers. She likely could not have coped with hearing that his grandmother having met the same fate as her own, along with the whole village.

Gulping back her feelings and memories of how many lives had been lost, she put the smile back on her face. "You are indeed. As an apprentice though, mind you. I am sure your grandmother taught you a lot, but there is always more to learn and I will need to make sure you know your way around treatments and herbs before letting you lose on someone." The last part was added with a genuine smile along with a small wink.

"However, first of all lets get you settled in. If you have been walking all day, then I would think you have worked up an appetite." Grinning she knew all to well just how much young men could consume. Heading off, she lead him towards a few wooden houses built by the shore of a small lake. "Now those three are occupied" she said as she pointed each one out. "But the rest are up for grabs. You will have to give them a bit of a clean, but I will make sure you get some clean linen and Alwin will bring some firewood as the nights tend to get cold here. After that, please do ensure to get the firewood yourself."

Pushing a lock of blonde hair behind an ear, she added "Food and lodging are included. As for the wages, well it all depends on how many patients we get. After the expenses have been deducted, we then share what is left. And we all help out around here, whether it is the upkeep of the place itself, or treating patients. Is that acceptable to you?"

Xyler
New Apprentice

For a moment, Xyler thought he had said something wrong, noticing a very brief change in expression of the healer, but she didn't say anything to indicate that he'd upset her. Hopefully, it was only his imagination. The smile had returned, anyway, and so Xyler tried to assure himself that nothing was wrong. As she informed him he was accepted as an apprentice, Xyler's face broke into a grin. "Thank you, Healer Sigrid... is that what I ought to call you, or is there something else you prefer?" He wondered, wanting to make sure he got it right. It was a big relief, after having come so far, that he wasn't being turned away. His next option would have been to travel to Gondor, and seek apprenticeship in the White City, but that was quite far away.

"Letting me loose on someone? You say that like I'm some sort of monster." He caught the wink and knew she wasn't totally serious, but he did understand. It made sense, after all, seeing as she had no idea what he knew or didn't know.

Food. The mention of food reminded Xyler how hungry he'd become, and he nodded to let the woman know her guess was correct. "It's been a while since I stopped to eat, yes." he confessed. He followed, taking a look at the three houses she had pointed out. "I get a house too?" His eyes widened in surprise. "Just me, or are there others sharing the houses, like a dorm?" He had expected a dorm type setup or something, and to think of having an entire house all to himself, small though it was, still surprised him.

He knew well how cold the nights got, having just spent a few camping out in the open. "Right, I can handle the firewood." Having never really had any 'job' before aside from simply helping his grandmother, it honestly had not even occurred to him about wages, and the mention of getting paid caused him to pause. "Oh, yes, definitely acceptable. Thank you." This was all so new, and exciting, and just... different, but somehow he remembered his manners and how to be respectful. "When should I report back to the infirmary?" Other questions could wait, but he figured he ought to find out the answer to that one before doing anything else.

(yay, finally found a picture i like)
