Pearl Brockhouse

Pearl hummed happily as she walked across the room, scooping up another sandwich along the way. She waved to Lora and Abelard as she passed them and giggled to herself when she heard Silas talking about the vest she had re-gifted. What was she doing again? Going to look at all the awkward family portraits hanging on the wall, of course. But that wasn't what she had set out to do! She had been meaning to help catch Pinkletoes! And of course, the cat was all the way on the other side of the room now. Pearl sighed, exasperated.

It seemed that the cat was not attracted to her at all, and she watched others trying to lure her... with a vest? Meanwhile she herself was sort of attracted to a very delicious looking piece of cake, which she scooped up without hesitation.

"That kitten is just... impossibly nimble. Not a match to a very well-rounded hobbit..." she mumbled, licking whipped cream off her fingers after scarfing down the piece of cake as if she still was hungry.

Missing the Cat

Well, the animal certainly wasn't over here. Abelard scratched the top of his head. Things certainly had changed, since just an hour or so ago when he had been safely hidden beneath the table, waiting to pull pranks on the passing guests. He felt... grown. Older
You should not have come so foolishly though Abelard. You're not a little hobbit-lad anymore, hiding da's shoes and the whatlike. Now you'd best be responsible, and help to find that cat.

But the cat, of course, was not in this direction.

Menolly had gotten a bit distracted by the food table. Kittens were very cute and all, and catching them was important and whatnot, but also cheese. She did love cheese, and had of course shown up hungry to the party, as all sensible hobbits do. Catching Pinkletoes was all very well and good, but surely Silas and everyone wouldn't mind if she stopped for a cheese-based snack. Perhaps she could make her way to the food table despite the bedlam all around.

Jorgy, apparently coming out of a food coma

Mmmmm, that was a nice dream. Jorgy had fallen asleep on the floor of Silas’ house (you’ll have to forgive him, he doesn’t really understand the rules of etiquette and doesn’t understand what a faux pas it was to drool on someone else’s hard wood floor) and awoke with a sudden yelp. What was going on! Where was he? Why did he have crumbs all over him? Hmm, this was a mystery. Well okay it wasn’t. A plate with a half-eaten sandwich and a pickle rind sat next to him. He’d just had a food coma. Nothing to worry about. He stood up, brushed himself off, and tried to remember what it was that he was doing. What was it… what was it… what… Oh! Something about cat herding. Silas had a cat. Jorgy had just gotten a ferret and he loved the ferret and PAY ATTENTION JORGY! Right, okay he needed to look for the cat.

Rilla Banks at A4 and staying put!

Rilla's eyes went wide with jealousy and outrage! Pinkletoes scurried away from her and was now practically within scratching distance from some unfamiliar hobbit (Fuchsia). She was pretty sure that hobbit hadn't even been invited to this party! Who would do such an outrageous thing?

It would certainly not be right for this uninvited guest to catch the kitten. So she crouched down even lower, and whispered longingly, "if you come to me, Pinky, I will give you every treat you can imagine. Think of it! Cheese and milk and sausage rolls and beetroot pie if you want it. I mean it looked like Jorgy really liked it...don't you like the sound of that?"

Somehow, unexpectedly... she had managed to come up to the mischievous kitten. Now, if only she could reach out and grab the little creature.

"Kitty-kitty-kitty..." Fuchsia whispered, trying to move as cautiously as she could so that she would not scare Pinky away.

Both she and the other hobbit tried to lure Pinkletoes closer but they failed completely. It seemed the kitten had other ideas and they did not include being kissed, scritched on the ears or cheeks or cuddled to bits.

"Hmph," Rilla said. "I guess she doesn't like either of us," she told Fuchsia. Privately, she was satisfied that the uninvited guest had not caught Pinky but for once, she did not make her thoughts known. She didn't want to have an argument at Silas' party and now they were on even footing again. Rilla set off to see if she could lure the kitten some other way.

"Pinkletoes! What are you DOING?" Pearl cried with not a little uncharacteristic frustration edging her voice. Nobody could get near the wily little kitten, and the piles of sandwiches were getting smaller and smaller. What would they do without provisions?? Would Silas hold them trapped here until they corralled his cat for him??? Anxiety rose in Pearl's throat and spurred her to try desperately to scramble across the room toward the cat...

Jorgy, thinking like a cat

Well he hadn’t found Pinkletoes. But no one else had either so Jorgy’s guilt was a little bit less. Still, Silas had asked for help and that’s exactly what he intended to do! He was gonna… what was he going to do. Before he was a hobbit what would he have done? He would have slithered around and cornered the cat and then he’d open his jaws and… nope, can’t do that. That was kinda the opposite of what Silas had asked. Still, getting on his belly might be a good idea. He didn’t really slither now, he’d learned to walk with only a few weird missteps here and there. Walking through someone’s garden was a bad idea, as was trying to leave via window. Right, Jorgy, focus. There’s cat to be found and not eaten. Jorgy dropped to all fours and begin to scurry about as if he were a cat. His logic? If he thought like a cat and ran around like a cat, he’d know exactly where Pinkletoes had gone.

Abelard, Slipping and Sliding

One moment he had been striding confident(ish)ly across the room in pursuit of a cat which was sure to be found somewhere, and the next his legs had been taken out from under him. With a hissing yelp that was not un-catlike himself, Abelard tumbled across the room, sending the dishware (had that been a tea saucer? who on earth would have been eating food or drinking tea under the table?) skidding across the room.
The young hobbit, for his part, was taken aback -- and by aback we mean "off his feet" -- handing hard on his knees and only slowly catching his breath and beginning to stand up. This was intolerable. He would not be making a fool of himself, no -- CLEARLY he had been going too fast. Abelard would simply have to slow things down and wait for the kitten to come to him.

Jorgy, strategizing like a… strategizer

This was getting him nowhere. Jorgy also felt a little foolish crawling around on the floor. Well, actually. Did he? It was actually quite fun, now that he thought about it. It was weird because no one else was doing it, but when did that ever stop Jorgy! (that’s the spirit!) Still, he needed a better way to herd this cat than go in the complete opposite direction. Why he thought going away from Pinkletoes would get him closer to the cat was anyone’s (including Jorgy’s) guess. He had two options, as he saw them. He could go toward Pinkletoes, which was certainly effective, though no one had managed to close enough distance between themselves and the cat for that to be of use. He could also try and make Pinkletoes come toward him. That was a much easier strategy to try and put into action. Jorgy wouldn’t even have to move from his very comfortable spot. The only question he could see was how to get the cat to come to him. What would Jorgy do if he were Pinkletoes? Well now that was a complicated question. What would he want? He’d want a saucer of milk, Pearl told him that it was what cats loved. He certainly was not going to ignore anything Pearl told him! There was only a slight problem. Jorgy had no milk. All he had was a bit of ale still in his mug. Would Pinkletoes like some ale? It was worth a shot.

The room was crowded and confused (where had that odd wolf got to anyway?) and Menolly somehow managed to go precisely in the opposite direction of the food. Her stomach growled irritably. What sort of party was this anyway? But she did notice that she was within reach of an ale keg near the wall, so she drew herself a mug and sipped at it, contemplating her options.

As she looked around to see what strategies others were trying, she noticed Jorgy nearby, standing there with a bit of ale in his mug and thinking hard (or at least she thought he was thinking hard, it was a bit difficult to tell with Jorgy sometimes). "Are you trying to give the kitten a bit of ale?" she called in concern. "I'm not sure that's a very good idea."

Abelard, Seizing an Opportunity

There -- out of the corner of his eye Abelard had spotted the cat. Now was his chance, now was his opportunity -- he had only to run three quarters of the full length of the room, almost in a straight line, dodging tables and chairs and people and slick tiles and crockery, which they were keeping on the floor for some reason, and then the cat -- which he still thought they should have named Paw Hardwick -- would be in his arms.

There was nothing like a food coma to be a compliment to the chef. Lora shook her head from her brief nap, and found the kitten was still running about. How so many fine hobbits had missed catching it (herself included), she was sure she didn't know.

But her nap had now made her hungry. It was time to get a bit more to eat. If she happened to find the kitten in the meantime, she would not be opposed. She headed back toward the food table, wondering if somebody was really trying to give the kitten ale. She thought that would be much more likely to be a kitten repellent, rather than attractor.

Pearl noted with some consternation that Jorgy had begun crawling around on the floor, likely in imitation of the kitten. She sighed. Oh Jorgy! What an oddball. Hmm, and now he was offering it some ale? She'd have to have a word with him about that, just in case he ever decided to get a kitten for himself. Just what the Shire needed - a drunk cat being looked after by a lad who had only just learned about second breakfast!

Oh, good! Menolly was telling Jorgy not to offer Pinky any ale. Menolly knew lots and lots about kittens, after all. With that taken care of, Pearl decided she might as well try to chase the cat again.

Pinkletoes ran off halfway across the room and Rilla slumped down upon the floor with a loud and indignant "hmph!" This task was impossible and she was considering giving up when she heard Menolly mention ale.

"Ale?" she asked, her head snapping up to attention. "Can someone pass me an ale, please? I think I need one..." She moaned from where she sat slouched rather miserably upon the Hardwicks' floor with her red paisley skirt spread out in crinkles around her. "Just slide it along, please! Any old kind, I don't mind!"

The kitten was so close to Pearl! With any luck it would run just a bit closer to her.

Rilla was asking for an ale, and Lora didn’t blame her one bit. She looked sadly at her own mostly depleted cup, and decided she could use a refill as well. She was relatively far from the table, though, unfortunately. “I’m going for a refill!” she announced. If she happened across the kitten on her way, well, so much the better!

Jorgy, correct?

Jorgy couldn’t believe it. Despite Menolly’s (and Pearl’s he knew nothing about her disapproval) protestations about using ale to lure cats, the plan seemed to have nearly worked. He looked smugly at his friends. Okay it wasn’t really smug (Jorgy had yet to learn so a rude face) so much as goofily beaming. He congratulated himself on his wonderful achievement by having a sip of ale. A sip, naturally, turned into draining the last of the stein. He was about to offer Pinkletoes some of the ale when… egads! He was out! How could this have happened? He had some only a moment ago, he had tasted it and… oh that’s why there was no more ale. He was on the horns of a dilemma. What the heck was up with that phrase? Horns weren’t a dilemma; they were a disaster! This was a disaster too! Jorgy had no more ale! He was also getting very sidetracked as to why he needed the ale other than to fill his stein and he was thirsty. Something about cat herding? Cat herding. That sounded familiar. What was…. Oh right! Pinkletoes was on the loose and he needed… his stomach growled. Food or cats? The eternal dilemma.

Menolly was safely adjacent to the ale, which she appreciated as she drew a fresh mug. She still couldn't lay her hands on any food (never mind any possibility of catching Pinkletoes) but she didn't mind that so much now that she had a bit of ale in her belly. She heard Rilla yelling something across the room. Something about...whales? No, mail? Why would she need to check the mail? Kale? A kale salad was all very well and good, but Menolly was pretty sure there hadn't been any at the food table.

Oh! "Rilla!" she shouted across the room. "Catch!" Menolly drew up another full mug, and with confidence borne of a belly full of ale and empty of food, threw the mug across the room at Rilla, trying her best to keep the mug upright as she launched it into the air. She lost sight of it as it flew across the room, but surely this was a good way to deliver ale. In fact... "Jorgy, do you need a refill?" Menolly called. He was quite a bit closer, and she was confident she could maybe probably almost throw a mug of ale directly to him.

Things were getting a bit rowdy. Perhaps it was all the ale that the hobbits had consumed throughout the afternoon, mused Pearl. Rilla had sunk to the ground, Jorgy was being Jorgy, and Menolly, standing nearby, had tossed a full mug of ale across the room to Lora! Pearl's eyes bulged with anxiety. "Ahhh!" She crammed another sandwich into her mouth to stifle her cry of shock as the mug and ale went soaring across the room. She chewed a bit and swallowed. "Oh dear," she mumbled, noting that she had been splashed a bit with the flying beer. "Well, once we catch this cat, I can change."

Speaking of the cat . . . Pinkletoes was a bit closer now, but still out of reach. Pearl decided to plant herself next to the table and see what would happen if she waited near the food.

Jorgy, doing the thing

Well that settles it. When there’s a dilemma of third breakfast proportions, one ought not to try and chose, one ought to simply allow the dilemma to come to oneself… that didn’t actually make any sense. Let’s try that again Jorgy. When you have a tough choice, let one of the options come to you, then that’s the thing you go with. There! Much better. Jorgy had tried to move in the direction of the ale, feeling mightily parched but then Pinkletoes darted out from their hiding spot and Jorgy was nearly on top of him! Jorgy blushed with pride. He’d done it! Okay, he hadn’t actually done it yet, but he was so close! He got down on his hands and knees. Wait, was he already on his hands and knees? Had he intended to scuttle over to the table and pour ale from the floor? What was Jorgy thinking? He must have been standing, though no evidence can be found of that, just like the train of thought that has been thoroughly derailed at this point.

Okay back on things. Jorgy was on his hands and knees and he was coming for Pinkletoes. He was going to make Silas and Pearl (and Menolly and Lail and all the others too course) proud of him. He was going to be an excellent cat herder!

"I am not sure Pinky likes anyone in this room judging by the success of catching her," Fuchsia responded sagely to Rilla. By now it appeared that no one will ever be able to catch the silly cat.

Picking yet another sandwich (while there were any) the Hobbit stuffed it in her mouth and watched the disorder caused by crawling Hobbits and flying ales. "If I were Pinky, I'd sneak out of this room filled with crazy people," she noted, mostly to herself, and then decided to have another go at approaching the ever elusive little furry creature.

Rilla Banks, possibly getting kicked out of the party

If Rilla had a chance to tell Menolly NOT to throw the ale, she would have because she had no hand-eye coordination as far as catching things went. Unfortunately, practically no time at all passed between her request for ale and the other hobbit yelling "Catch!" Did Menolly also work at the Green Dragon with those quick-hands at pouring ale? That thought was neither here nor there because just then Rilla had another problem to deal with...

CRASH!

The mug of ale splattered to the floor, drenching her toes and ruining her brand new fuzzy slippers as the mug shattered into a million tiny pieces. Uh-oh... Rilla may have just kissed her first and last invite to the Hardwicks' hobbit hole goodbye. "Um...does anyone have a mop?" she asked in a trembling voice.

Jorgy, something something lava snake

Hmm, okay that wasn’t the way to go. Jorgy had an idea about quantum physics and wormholes and temporal causality and, and… just kidding. Jorgy was so eager to get to Pinkletoes and the food at the same time that he tripped over a coffee table, moving further away from both the kitten and the vittles. He couldn’t decide and his feet, confused and confusticated, decided to reverse course and crash. The coffee table seemed to be no worse for wear, not that Jorgy had any idea what a coffee table that was worse for wear would look like. His stomach gurgled and he heard the mewling of a kitten. His choice, Jorgy's Choice, was still cat or food. Oh the wasted leftovers! What was this very much a Hobbit supposed to do now? He didn’t know. Though after this experiment, Jorgy knew he needed to move toward at least one of them rather than away from both.

Silas Hardwick

“Oh no, Rilla!” gasped Silas. As if in slow motion he saw the mug begin its inevitable descent and its contents fly into the air... before the sharp noise of broken things told everyone that mug’s career as a mug was over. Hastily he grabbed the dishcloths that had previously been left out and hurried over to Rilla before bending down to mop up the shards and ale. Blushing, he wondered if it would be quite appropriate to clean her toes?

"Catch!" Fuchsia heard an exclamation, and managed to duck out of the way as a mug of ale flew right over her head - only to crash at Rilla's feet. It seemed that staying in the room was becoming rather dangerous, and she couldn't keep wondering what would happen next. Silas was already tending to the ale-incident and the shocked Rilla, so Fuchsia turned her attention back to the mischievous kitten. "Pinky, why don't you come here for once?" she asked, somewhat annoyed. "Your disobedience seems to inspire rather crazy things around here..."

Lora jumped when a mug sailed through the air, to be shattered on the ground, glad it wasn't her breaking things for a change (her last name was not entirely undeserved). She froze for a moment, not wanting to step on glass, but also wanting to be helpful. She grabbed a towel off the table. "Here, Rilla," she offered, tossing the towel that direction. At least that wouldn't shatter, she thought to herself, while at the same time congratulating herself on not dropping her plate of food during all the chaos.

She was feeling very down about the whole mug incident when Silas came to the rescue. As he mopped up the spilled ale, Rilla burst into uncontrollable giggles. "You're tickling my toes, Silas!" she gasped.

That was when a towel flew out of Lora's hand and landed on Rilla's head. Towels were much safer to throw than mugs. No risk of breaking, clanging, or loss of ale. "Oh, thanks Lora!" she called as she swept it off her auburn curls and made an effort to help clean up but mostly she just swished the ale around in a puddle. "At least your birthday sure is going to be memorable!" she exclaimed cheerily to Silas before lowering her voice. "You're not going to make me leave, are you?"

Lora Stumblefoot

"No problem!" Lora called back to Rilla, although feeling a little bit bad she had bad aim and the towel had landed on the other hobbit's head. But at least there was no broken glass with this toss. As Rilla said, this was definitely going to be a memorable birthday...or not, if Lora kept drinking. Probably time to slow down and have a tea. And perhaps one more of those brownies...and maybe a muffin as well. Just a hint of some fruit salad, and maybe a serving of taters as well. Just to keep up her strength, of course. Kitten-catching, or lack thereof, was hard work.

Jorgy, Cat Hunter and Hungry Boi

This was making no sense to Jorgy. None of it. He had nearly caught Pinkletoes’ attention with the ale once but, true to kitten sensibilities, failed whatsoever to regain his attention. Jorgy was stumped. He had tried going in the opposite direction from everything and that had inexplicably failed and when he tried to call for the kitten, Pinkletoes went in the wrong direction. He was at least somewhat relieved to find that no one else was having any luck either. It was definitely a Hobbit trait to flail about trying to catch a kitten.

His stomach gurgled. He was still hungry. Poor Jorgy couldn’t remember the last time he ate something. Okay that was a lie, but he was very good at exaggeration. He stood frozen for a long moment, trying to decide what he wanted to do. Did he want to move toward the cat (or away from potentially because somehow, he thought that would’ve worked), call the cat to him, or go for the food.

No. He couldn’t do any of those things.

Jorgy was not the smartest Hobbit in the hole, but he knew who was! Pearl! If he teamed up with her, there was no way Pinkletoes could escape them and Silas would be put at ease again.

“Pearl!” he called as his stomach grumbled again. Wait a second… he squinted, making sure his eyes were no deceiving him. Was Pinkletoes hiding behind Pearl’s leg? Yes, yes they were! “Pearl! Look down! You can save the day!”

Pearl Brockhouse

Still a bit damp with ale, Pearl watched bemusedly as a towel sailed through the air and landed on Rilla's head. "What a party you're having, Silas!" she called, though at this point she had no idea where in the room the birthday boy was. All she knew was she was still near the table, and there was another egg and cress sandwich for her to munch on.

Just as she opened her mouth to take a bite, she heard Jorgy calling to her. She turned to face her BFF and, as she did so, felt something tickle at her ankle. Something fuzzy and warm. Something very kitten-like, perhaps?!

Sure enough, Jorgy was shouting that Pinkletoes was right behind her. "Oh!" Pearl cried, stooping (slowly and calmly so as not scare her off) to scoop up the kitten. To her surprise, the kitten didn't flinch or try to escape, but leapt in a graceful arc into Pearl's arms. (Somewhere, some dramatic music may have been playing just to underscore the significance of this moment.) Sweet relief! They had finally caught the kitten! "Why didn't you just do that earlier?!" Pearl whispered to the cat.

She proudly held up Pinkletoes for the room to see. "Look, everyone! I've got her!!"

Pearl stays put at D9 with Pinky!
