Keeping an Eye Out

It wasn't his fault he'd failed to participate much in the sorting and distribution of Mathoms. He HAD tried to avoid the whole experience, handing off the handkerchiefs to the birthday boy himself--but, it was his second present which had brought the trouble. It was the second present, after all, which had brought the kitten.
Pearl's gift was kind, if only as a tool for the fending-off of the over-eager cat--but, thankfully, with time and something else to focus on, he managed to lose the animal. The young Brandybuck took a moment to collect himself, wondering if he hadn't been better off taking up cousin Mindo's offer of heading east, to Bree, and not here to Hobbiton where the Shire-folk were so... odd.

Anyway, breath caught, he returned to the party.

(Sorry everyone! Got caught up with real life and forgot to check this thread )

For Our Next Game:
Catch That Cat!

Silas has named the kitten Pinkletoes after much consideration. Thank you for all your suggestions!

But naughty Pinkletoes has become FAR too excited by all the goings on at the party and is Ready to Cause Some Chaos. She’s bounding around the room all full of excitement!

Will you be able to catch her and soothe her down?!

The Hardwick’s living room is represented on this grid. You will have the option to move either YOURSELF (A roll) or PINKLETOES (B roll). If you and Pinkletoes land on the same square at any round, you’ve successfully caught her! Until she gets away again...

Image

The game will essentially work like Snakes and Ladders except the aim is not to reach the end but to be on the same square as Pinkletoes. Oh, and nobody will know where the snakes and ladders are except me.

ROLLS will be with 6 sided dice.
A Roll:
1: you’ll move 1 forward, horizontal
2: you move 1 back, horizontal
3: you move 1 up, vertical
4: you move 1 down, vertical
5: you move 2 forward, horizontal
6: you move 2 down, vertical

B Roll:
All rolls for Pinkletoes will affect her during a round. She’s faster than a hobbit, so:
1: she moves 2 forward, horizontal
2: she moves 2 back, horizontal
3: she moves 2 up, vertical
4: she moves 2 down, vertical
5: she moves 3 forward, horizontal
6: she moves down, vertical

If you make Pinkletoes land on the food there will be no food. You have been warned...

Also I have no idea how this is going to work because I am literally making this up on the spot.

Credit to @Allafyrefleorhrtlig for the grid. Credit to roll20.net for the images. Link: https://2minutetabletop.com/faq/license ... tribution/

You may start on the square of your choosing as long as it touches the table but you won’t be told where Pinkletoes is. When you post, please place your Roll choice and your location in bold at the bottom of your post.

Please also continue to RP and enjoy the party! I’ll post a menu refresher in a bit!

Jorgy, lookin’ for the kitt’n

Jorgy was just settling in, devouring the sandwiches (wait the whats?!), ale, and pickles when all the gifts somehow ran out and the kitten disappeared. What a ‘cat’astrophe! (Jorgy really did love his puns). Well this would definitely not do. Not at all. Jorgy had no idea how to find a cat though he had heard references before to “herding cats” and assumed it must be difficult. He knew they herded sheep and goats in the Shire (Pearl had told him all about it) but he hadn’t seen a cat herder yet. They must be rare type. He wondered, as he stuffed the last pickle in his mouth and the last mouthful of ale, if Silas would send for a cat herder, surely this would be an occasion that called for it. Right?

He grabbed a nice healthy serving of beetroot pie (because it looked interesting and weird and naturally Jorgy is very much interested in all things interesting and weird) and began chowing down.

Perhaps, until Silas called the cat herder, he could help find Pinkletoes?

A Roll, please (starting on F8)

Heather Boffin

Heather was a bit late for the party and, unfortunately, had missed out on the gift-giving phase. But perhaps it was for the better as some of the unwrapped gifts looked a bit odd to say the least. But, she had not missed out on the important part of the food. Just as she was about to start eating her delicious pile of sandwiches, a kitten got loose! In some strange train of thought, Heather put down her plate of food and began to try and chase the kitten.

A Roll, please! (starting on D9)

Cautious

The cat. The cat. The CAT. The cat was about, and Abelard was concerned. He was not concerned that the cat would escape or anything--no, there were too many people here, one of them was likely to find the little beast. What worried him were the kitten treats in his pocket, and the thought that the one to find the cat might be him. Still! He had returned to the party, and there was no sense in standing here all afternoon. Attempting to put out more confidence than he really had, Abelard set out from his current position (F8) in search of a cucumber and cheese sandwich and (a hopeful absence of) cat.

Roll for me!

(EDIT: Believe it or not, this was a simul with Dim, if only because I left the tab open without hitting post and went to go do some other stuff)

Rilla Banks

Rilla beamed when Ducky praised her culinary advice. She, a mere hobbit from the East-farthing had managed to help a wizard! This was definitely going to get written on the calendar as An Event to Remember. "I'm so glad you think so!" she managed to squeak to Ducky, feeling a tad overwhelmed.

The feeling doubled when she heard Silas picked Pinkletoes for the kitten's name. Though she was beaming, her cheeks felt warm and were probably as pink as the kitten's toes. "Silas, I'm so happy you liked my name! But she seems a bit overexcited even for a kitten...um, did she get into the 'nip by any chance? Let's see if I can help find her!" After swallowing a hearty sip of cordial, Rilla slipped her chair under the table (at F6). She crouched down onto the floor and tried to emulate a kitten's point-of-view while sitting very still, hoping the kitten might come closer if she didn't move.

Pearl Brockhouse

Having provided the wizard with a pipe into which he could put stuff and smoke it, Pearl turned eagerly to the next game. This was quite the birthday party! So many presents and games and kitten mischief! The kitty's new name was Pinkletoes, apparently, and was jumping about with the bounding energy that only a young cat possessed. Pearl was very glad Socks had long since grown out of this phase.

Pearl grabbed a handful of triple fried chips to sustain her through the massive effort of chasing down a kitten. Struck suddenly with a brilliant (or so she thought) idea, she squatted low and held out a chip, perhaps with which to tempt the cat. She thought she saw Silas looking a bit distraught as his kitten scurried about and everyone joined the fray to get her in check.

There was still quite a bit of food, and Lora headed back toward the table, this time for chips. And perhaps some more cordial. And while she was here, may as well get the tiny sausages.

But the kitten, the kitten! So hyperactive! If she had half that energy, she would accomplish half more of what she should. Carefully setting her plate down so the kitten wouldn’t disturb it, she turned once more back to the table. Fruit salad was healthy, after all.

Menolly wasn't entirely sure she'd been invited to Silas' birthday, but it sounded like there was quite the party going on, and surely no one would mind if she invited herself. In fact, she saw Heather arriving late, so she casually walked in after her and struck up a conversation. "Hello, Heather. Bit of an odd party, isn't this? What's going on with that kitten running around? Ooh, snacks!" Although Menolly did love cats, she was more accustomed to chasing after her old black cat Bernard, not this energetic ball of fur bouncing about the room.

Gifts were gone, but not the food, and Fuchsia snatched up a couple of cheese and pepper sandwiches, eating vigorously, as she looked around. It seemed that everyone's attention was drawn to the kitten that ran all over the place, like a little mischievous ball of fur.

Brushing the crumbs of sandwiches off the front of her dress, Fuchsia wondered whether she should join in the chase; the table with all the delicious things was definitely very attractive. Though that kitten... The hobbit lass snatched up a few grapes from the cheeseboard.

"Here! Kitty, kitty..." she called, still only observing the goings on in the room.

If Yávië knew how to spell, had opposable thumbs, and was not, in fact, a wolfhound, his note to Aerlinn might have read something like this.

My favoritest Linny Linn,
Word has reached me of a dire Shire quagmire in which I feel especially qualified to assist. I have high hopes of securing a quick victory and bringing great honor and glory to our kingdom. Look for my return at first light on the fifth day. I shall bring as many lunch leftovers as can be reasonably carried--the menu is quite excellent.
Your goodest doggy dog,
Y

But since such a feat would have been beyond even the greatest wolfhound heroes of old, he settled for leaving a potato on her bed and made his way, through great toil and peril, to Silas Hardwick's hobbit hole.

He slipped through the door--as much as a 120 pound canine could slip through anything--after another latecomer (Menolly) and announced himself to the room with a cordial woof.

A dog! Now there was a dog woofing in from the doorway. Nevertheless, Abelard would save face. He had come here to have some fun--some fun at others expense, perhaps, but since that was not shaping up it would have to be with the others, in participation in this new activity. Drawing a kitten treat from his pocket, he held it high in the air and ADVANCED!

Ducky's mouth watered as the next course was brought out. He could understand the hobbits' reputation for such great appetites now. Who wouldn't want to stuff their face constantly when they had such excellent food at hand? Well, Ducky would. And he did. He shoveled that food into his face like there was no tomorrow (and who knew, after all?) until he was full to bursting.

Then someone pointed out that he was supposed to put on a show. And of course they wanted fireworks. They always wanted fireworks. See wizard, see fireworks. Were wizards smoke? Was Ducky a dog, that they came at him with sticks, badgering him to put on a fireworks display?

He did owe Silas though, for both the hiring and also the share of food with which he had been provided.

"Alright, alright, give me a hot minute to prepare. I can't be chasing this cat around if I'm going to give a show either, I've got to concentrate. And it won't be fireworks either." he said, with a hint of grumpiness. "Let me go get my pack, I left it at the door. Be back momentarily."

Silas Hardwick, Birthday boy

Silas had barely managed to eat half of a sausage roll before his Ma had grasped him by the shoulders and was sobbing into his birthday waistcoat. “OooOoooh, Silas,” she was howling, “a lovely young lady came and gave me back my ring which I’d dropped into one of the boxes, and wasn’t she just sweet now? So many lovely young ladies here, and when are you going to marry one of them? Look, I’ll even let you have this here ring which I”

Silas fled the scene, choking on his pastry. But - oh no, Pinkletoes had snatched the ring right from Ma’s hands and was bounding about the room as though she were possessed! Paw Hardwick had surfaced for a moment and was gazing blearily at the scene through his returned monocle, a bit smudged from Jorgy Fingertips.

“Oh no! Catch that cat!” squealed Silas. “Oh Rilla, dear, of course I liked that name! Pinky is so naughty though. Also, welcome Menolly, welcome, uh, what was your name again miss? @Dimcairien Luiniel Sorry, the party’s a bit of a muddle, but I think we may have some whiz bangers soon?” He beamed at Ducky in passing, who had been very complimentary about the food.

Wait, was that a dog??

"Where was that darned cat?" Heather muttered. Kitty chasing was not on her list of things to do while at a birthday party. Presents, food, and socialising were more her thing, not chasing furry little creatures, no matter how cute they might be. She was completley on the opposite end of the table as the kitty and hoped to turn around and catch it. Or perhaps it would be wiser to stay where she was and hope that the kitty would come to her.

Seeing the birthday hobbit Silas ask who she was, she laughed, and introduced herself, "I'm Heather!" she said happily, "your kitty seems to be of the adventurous sort. You certain it's not part Took?"

The scheme with the chips had been altogether unsuccessful. And now there was a dog in the mix! Pearl liked dogs in theory, but this one was very, very big. She grabbed an egg and cress sandwich from the table before moving nervously away from the food, giving Silas a concerned glance when he began choking at his mother's mention of marriage.

A roll, please! (From E6)

Unnamed Wolfy

This was all Yávië's idea - that dog was full of schemes. The wolf knew his very presence would frighten the hobbits. He did not wish to be chased away with pitchforks and screaming (he really was a harmless wolf. Just ask that ranger he'd found in the Imladris maze), so he lay hidden in the garden outside the hobbit home. While he waited, he licked his paws idly in the shade.

Yávië had intimated through a series of barks and yowls that there would be plenty of food here. That was really all he was interested in. (Interestingly enough, dog and wolf noises are mutually intelligible, albeit with quite distinct accents.)

If the wolfhound did not bring back any food, the wolf would simply return to the ranger. The last he'd seen her, she had been chasing a flying hobbit lady down the road. Suddenly, a bearded figure (Ducky) emerged from a door. The wolf lifted his head and fixed his gaze on the man. He smelled like pungent smoke. Intriguing. Maybe this smokey man would provide food.

Not wanting to leave her food unattended, Lora didn't try particularly hard to catch the kitten, as she was more particularly interested in eating her food before the cat found it. She ate quickly, not wanting to be rude to the host, and make sure she helped with the kitten issue.

A woofing noise close by caught her attention, and a dog that likely weighed more than she did came in through the door. It was a bit intimidating, but perhaps he was hungry? She would be happy to donate some of her lunch, as she was much more fond of dogs than cats. Still, he was very large, maybe it was best not to draw attention to herself.

Jorgy, (Not) Professional Cat Herder at F9

Well that hadn’t quite worked the way he had planned it. (Had he really planned anything though?). He was now too far from the table to grab a second helping of the delight beetroot pie (which is a good thing because his smile by the end of two slices would be utterly terrifying) but also too far from the ale or what was it Silas had called it? Whine? Pearl told him once when she was teaching him, or trying anyway, to read, she said he needed to quit whining. He thought he had understood what that meant, but now he was quite as certain. Should he have some whine? Perhaps, just make sure Pearl doesn’t catch you!

Was he doing something? He was over here for a reason. What had that reason been? Think Jorgy, think. Something to do with puns. He needed to stop kitten around. Oh that’s it! He was looking for Pinkletoes. The kitten was pink but it did have toes, and toe beans. Anyway, it was time to save the day and find Pinkletoes. Food could wait (WHAT!?).

Well, all had worked out rather fine in the short-term. Abelard had found himself, in the hustle and bustle, back up against the food table where he'd begun, and the cat was still a safe distance away. Perhaps the kitten treats were as much a tool to ward it off as to bring it down on him. Perhaps it had already had its fill.

Abelard had not. He swiped a sausage roll, eating quietly while keeping an eye out for the cat.

A B Roll, if you would.

She thought see saw the kitten out of the corner of her eye, but it turned out to be nothing. Fortunately she had brought her plate along with her, as she snacked. The potato chips were particularly delicious. She must give her compliments to the chef. Had she waited long enough before going back for thirds? She didn't want to look greedy, but also didn't want to disrespect her host by not getting thirds.

A flash across the room caught her eye, just as she decided getting another drink would be more appropriate at this stage. It was the kitten! And between them was the buffet table. How fortuitous, Lora thought to herself.

"Oh!" With a cry, Pearl stopped suddenly after taking a single step. How could she have neglected to pour herself a drink? She leaned over to the table and began filling up a mug. It would be a very lucky thing if she didn't spill all over the place during all the kitten catching.

Mug of ale in hand, she scanned the room (or what she could see of it around the bulk of the enormous dog). Pinkletoes had scampered into a far corner, and Pearl was suddenly feeling more like eating and drinking than chasing a cat. She decided to wait a bit and see if she couldn't finish half her sandwich before the cat inevitably moved somewhere else in the room, perhaps conveniently closer to her!

Menolly managed a polite nod to Silas' ma, if only because she seemed like the matronly type that required a polite nod at minimum. Something in the back of Menolly's head suggested she curtsy, but she hadn't curtsied in many moons and wasn't about to start now. Instead she said, "what a lovely party for your son, ma'am. Excuse me, but it seems someone's got to catch that cat, and believe it or not, I do have some experience in cat-catching matters."

She cast her eyes about the room, looking for little Pinkletoes. Instead her eyes landed on...a wolf? What was a wolf doing here?

Rilla Banks

While many of the other hobbits went gallivanting around in search of the kitten, Rilla was the picture of stillness. Being calm and centered would surely lure the kitten near in this hub-bub of activity. Even when the dog came in. She ignored her instinct to run over and scratch behind his ears. That took a great deal of self control.

But then her nose started itching. And the longer she resisted, the more it intensified like someone was tickling her with a particularly fine feather. "ACHOO!" she let out a very loud sneeze for a small hobbit lass.

It was a good thing she let it out when she did because next thing she knew, Pearl was suddenly almost right on top of her, munching on a sandwich. Rilla suddenly thought food seemed like a grand idea, so she picked up a fruit pastry for herself. "This kitten sure is fast, isn't she Pearl?" Then she saw the wolf and gasped. "Oh no! Do wolfies eat kittens?! Don't worry, Pinky, I'm coming to save you!!" and ran off after the kitten, completely abandoning her zen strategy of luring the cat to herself.

Viola Brockhouse, cat-astrophising

The wizard had seemed a bit grumpy even with the box of pipeweed and pipe that Pearl had presented him with, but everyone knew that wizards were temperamental creatures at the best of times. Viola left him to it and headed back to the apparently self-replenishing buffet table to swipe some pickles and cucumber sandwiches. As she was polishing off her fifth round, she overheard someone saying at the kitten was on the rampage. She looked up from her plate in time to see a streak of fluff whizz past. Maybe she should help try to catch Pinkletoes?

Brushing the crumbs off herself, Viola turned in the direction the fluff ball had gone, only to be faced with a massive hound. She flattened herself up against the table and held her breath, pretending to not exist. Maybe it wouldn't notice her and would try to eat the wizard instead, and then maybe she could slip past it whilst the dog was munching on his corpse? That sounded like her best chance of survival.

Silas Hardwick, Birthday Boy

Silas was chewing anxiously on his knuckles. It was a nervous habit he had developed and was only exacerbated by his Ma’s custom of whacking him with a spatula whenever she noticed him doing it. Hastily, he replaced his knuckles with a ham sandwich.

First things first, really; who owned the dog? It was having an excellent time apparently, sniffing about importantly - there was a glint as of light from its neck which might purport a collar of some sort but Silas couldn’t quite get near enough to check. Who else owned big dogs around here asides from Farmer Maggot?

And that was to say nothing of the huff of warm breath he felt on the back of his neck. Silas trembled in every limb. WHO HAD INVITED THE WOLF? He knew that Ma was an overly friendly lady who had invited all and sundry to her only son’s party, but really, A WOLF? And of course, the wizard had disappeared into the porch to fetch his “entertainments” (Silas privately suspected it would be more weed) and was thus not here to rescue him.

Timidly he held his hand out to the wolf.

“Would you like a ham - uh, half a ham sandwich?” he quavered.

The kitten was quite far away at this point, and between eating her snacks, being side tracked by the buffet table, and not being particularly enamored by cats in the first place, Lora considered her chances of catching the kitten fairly remote. She would make the effort, however, it would not do to be discourteous to her host.

Another trip to the buffet table was most likely in order. She wasn’t adverse to finding exactly what was happening with the wolf either. Was he friendly, or was it time to make a precipitous exit?

Jorgy, The Beetroot Pie Lover

Well, he was a little further from the table now, though he was nowhere close to Pinkletoes. Where was the cat anyway? Jorgy was turning out to be a terrible cat herder. He was pretty sure the first rule of cat herding was know where the cat is. To be fair though, he was very distracted right now. This beetroot pie was amazing. He had never had anything like it back in Mordor. Well that’s a lie, he had had something like it in Mordor but he’d rather not talk or think about that right now. Right now he needed to find a cat and herd it. Suddenly, as he as taking a bite of beetroot pie that would stain his teeth for a good long time, a bit of the stuff dribbled down his chin. Never had it occurred to Jorgy use a napkin (paper was supposed to be written on, or at least that was he was learning from Pearl’s reading and writing lessons) to wipe his mouth. Therefore, when he grinned (which he did quite often) not only did he have red stained teeth, he had red stained cheeks and chin as well. If only he had a mirror (and knew that it was a reflection not another Hobbit that looked like him).

Unnamed Wolfy

The wizard was looking for a bag, and the wolf assumed this bag contained food or perhaps whatever had made him smell sharply of smoke. He stood, stretched, and walked toward the door. To demonstrate that he was friendly, he sat several paces from the wizard and let his tongue hang out of his mouth.

If one knew the speech of wolfish whines and yelps, they would have heard him say, "Hello, Wizard. I know you from the cooking contest. Do you have food?"

At these noises, some halflings gasped and stared in the wolf's direction. One uncomfortable-looking lad even approached with a sandwich in hand. The wolf's nose twitched eagerly, though he stayed still to continue communicating that he was a wolf In Control of his impulses.

When the hobbit offered him food, though, the wolf took some tentative steps into the hobbit home (this had not been a part of the original plan - where was Yávië with the spoils of the party?) and gently plucked the proffered ham sandwich from the hobbit's hand. He swallowed it quickly and ruffed, "Thank you, small person."

Pearl Brockhouse

"Oh, I'm so sorry, Rilla!" Pearl said through a mouthful of sandwich. She had almost collided with her friend from the Walking Club. "And, um, your good health!" she said, raising her mug of ale to acknowledge Rilla's massive sneeze.

Her friend moved off, but the cat seemed to be stuck on the other side of the room. Pearl took another bite of sandwich (these were really quite good) and grabbed another to tide her over for the rest of the game.

"Here, Pinkletoes!" she called, hoping her sweet hobbit voice might lure the kitten toward the center of the room.

Lora liked dogs, as a rule, but from where she was on the far side of the room, she could hear the wolf politely say thank you for the sandwich. Lora paused with the handful of chips halfway to her mouth. She liked dogs, and she didn’t even hate wolves any more than the next hobbit, but a talking wolf? Well that was just too much, she thought to herself, throwing her nose up in the air as she thought about her principles.

Her high-faluting thought regarding the benefits of hobbits over wolves did not last long, as she spied a hobbit (Jorgy) widely displaying reddened teeth. She suppressed a shudder and tried to help the fellow. “Yoo-hoo!” she called, waving her napkin toward Jorgy. “You there! Your teeth are red!” she offered helpfully, trying to walk toward him, but also trying not to trip over the kitten, as it would be a tremendous waste of the food precariously balanced on the plate if she fell.

Rilla ran across the room in search of the kitten. But she shook her head. There was nothing here to interest a kitten. No balls of yarn, no tall bookshelves to climb up, no potted houseplants to dig in and nothing interesting (and breakable) to knock off a ledge. No, Pinkletoes wasn't over here. So Rilla moved on, hoping to rescue the little one and maybe even get a wee cuddle in if she stayed still long enough.

Menolly squinted across the room. She was pretty sure she could see a fluffy little kitten getting into fluffy little kitten hijinks of some sort, but it was too far away and the room was too crowded for her to be sure. As she strained her vision, she noticed Jorgy standing nearby, also looking for the kitten. But his face was...well, a touch more alarming than usual. "Hello, Jorgy," she said politely, trying not to stare at the red juice running down his chin. "Uh...would you like a napkin?" She held out a square of clean cloth she had picked up from the food table.

Mesmerised by all the food on the table, Fuchsia had altogether forgotten about where she was and what she was doing. All she did was nibble dreamily on a fruitcake, trying to guess what it consisted of. Perhaps peach? However, her daydreams instantly dissolved at a loud bark - it startled her, and she almost dropped the half-eaten fruitcake. Right. The kitten. Or is it the dog - or was it wolf - that had to be caught now? At any rate she decided to finally do something except for lingering at the table.

Ducky, the "entertainment"

"Hoho, haha, heehee!" Ducky cried as he burst back into the room. He stopped short in his tracks, though, when he saw the mess of people milling about searching for Eru knew what. This was...unexpected. Would anyone even notice him when they were so clearly all focused on a single task? Oh well, he didn't get paid to ask questions. He got paid to entertain the masses!

He was wearing an elaborate costume in preparation. Oversized floppy white shoes with bright red laces, striped socks that did not match, baggy frilled pants and a similarly oversized shirt that gave him plenty of flexibility, and an absurd amount of facepaints in many colors completed a bizarre ensemble. He also had a flower pinned to his chest and a bright red bulb on his nose, which he now squeezed.

"Quaaaaaack!" it responded. Ducky was particularly proud of that. Most noses made a honk sound, but that had been too goose-like for him, so he had spent a lot of time and work making his nose say quack instead. It fit the theme.

"Alright, everyone, it's time for a riddle!" he yelled, so that everyone could hear him. "If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, and swims like a duck, what is it?" He giggled in anticipation of an unexpected punchline, but he waited for someone to guess before he spilled the beans.

Viola, having a ‘mare

Viola took a hesitant step forward, away from the buffet table that was probably attracting the wolfhound. The kitten was away off over the other side of the room, but her attention wasn’t really on Pinkletoes now there was a MASSIVE DOG hanging around. Maybe if she got to the armchair she could hop onto it and pretend to be a cushion?

Trying to keep her eyes on the dog turned out to be difficult though, because now there was a WOLF in the building too. Viola let out a tiny whimper. Silas was offering it a sandwich! Poor boy, it’d finish him off next. And on his birthday too! “Run, lad, and don’t look back!” she blurted out, then immediately regretted her rashness. Now the beast would spot her!

But then the wizard reappeared in a colourful costume, wittering about things going quack. Was he bait to attract the canines and lure them out? It sounded like the sort of cunning plan an Istar might come up with. Viola gulped and stayed put, eyes swivelling between wolfhound, wolf, wizard and the potential safety of the armchair.

Getting Fuller

Well, he hated to say it but--perhaps there was only so much a Hobbit could eat. All at once, of course. Give me a breather Abelard thought, eyeing the sandwich tray. Give me a breather and I'll be right back for you.
And what to do in this instance? Well -- WELL! It was time, at last, to do his duty. Pulling himself together, Abelard set out in search of that cat.

Silas Hardwick, Kind of Nervous

There was a huff of hot breath on his palm, and then the chomping, whuffing noises of enjoyment as the wolf enthusiastically consumed the half ham sandwich with an alacrity that would have impressed even the hungriest hobbit. Silas breathed out himself as the wolf attempted to convey its satisfaction with a mixture of tongue-lolling and a sort of woofing noise. Perhaps if they kept the beast well fed enough, it wouldn’t develop a taste for hobbit?! “I think we’re ok here Viola,” he called, “there’s plenty of food after all?!”

Silas was just edging over to nick a sausage roll for the creature when he spotted Jorgy - who’d clearly been into the beetroot pie, or else had taken up cannibalism, judging from his eerie red grin. Pearl was valiantly attempting to mop him up. There was definitely something going on there, Silas decided. A little warm glow lit his heart, overshadowed only by a little envy. “Pearl, there are dishcloths by the wash basin, if that beetroot stains,” he called over to her.

It was at this point that Ducky re-entered the party - in full costume. Silas’ jaw fell open in awe. He had never seen anything like it in his life.

“Um... er,” he stammered, trying to think around the wizard’s terrible riddle. “It couldn’t possible be... well, not to be impertinent, but - YOU?”

Pearl Brockhouse

Pearl had become quite distracted by her sandwich and missed out on a lot of action, it seemed. Multiple people were trying to help Jorgy wash up, Silas was directing her toward some dishcloths, a WOLF had entered the hobbit home, the big dog was still cavorting around, and Pinkletoes had moved much closer, likely bounding about given the somewhat chaotic scene that had descended on the Hardwicks' home.

"Hmm, what to do?" Pearl wondered. She was just about to get a dishcloth to aid in the Great Jorgy Cleanup Mission when Ducky came back into the room and squeaked a quacking nose and posed a riddle to the not-really-paying-attention hobbits. Privately, she agreed with Silas' answer. She decided to tiptoe toward the cat amidst all of the commotion . . .

A roll please (from F6)

Unnamed Wolf

His senses were a bit overwhelmed. The wolf had never been to a hobbit birthday party, but this was much more noisy than what he had pictured. Since he had only pictured piles of food and not all the actual people crammed into a room, this made sense.

His head snapped in the direction of a convincing waterfowl noise. Prey?! His ears pricked and his tail went up. He gave the air a few sniffs but did not smell any actual ducks. How disappointing.

Lora wasn't the only one who was concerned about poor Jorgy's now red teeth. She was about to turn back to the buffet table, making a mental note to give her compliments to the chef. She was reaching for the handle of the fruit salad, when the door burst open, and in walked the wizard, dressed as...she didn't even know how to describe him.

He was asking a riddle, and Lora was quite fond of riddles, but she was so startled by his outfit that she step backward without looking, and her heel slid on peanut butter on the floor. "Eeep!" she shrieked, as she felt herself falling backwards, grasping in the air for a handhold of some sort, while trying not to spill her plate.

The party seemed only to become more chaotic, more people, more animals, and a weirdly dressed person making duck noises... Where in all this mess was the kitten? And would the food be enough for everyone? Suddenly feeling very thirsty, Fuchsia snatched a mug of ale from the table, though she could be considered not of age for such drinks and took a sip. Tasting its bitterness, she frowned, put the mug back on the table and decided to see whether that was indeed a kitten she had glimpsed among the feet of the other hobbits.

Rilla was not really sure where to direct her attention between the dog, the wolf, the kitten and the wizard dressed like a clown. Or a duck? She wasn't really sure, but she thought Silas was on the right track with his answer to the riddle. But she was less shy than he and she hoped he would win his own birthday-riddle. "Well yes - like Silas said it must surely be you, Ducky! Or else I'm a- a-" she paused, trying to think of something preposterous, "a talking tree!" Yes. Everyone knew trees did not talk.

Hmm, Pearl had miscalculated rather wildly about Pinkletoes' motivations. The kitten had sat down and begun licking her paws calmly, in complete contrast to the scene around her. Since when had the hobbits been more wild than the little kitten?! Silas and his family were sure to have their work cut out for them when it came time to wrap up this party.

Meanwhile, Pearl had wandered away from the cat, hoping that the kitty would scamper toward her. Ah well, at least she still had a sandwich to munch on. "Hello, Abelard!" she said, noting that the previously-hidden lad was standing close by. "How are you liking the vest?"

"Oh, Hello Pearl." Abelard smiled his best, most youthful smile as she passed him, trying desperately not to look at the cat out of the corner of his eye. "The vest is wonderful, thank you very much. How are you enjoying your, um--Sandwich?"
Was the cat moving? Was he missing the fact that the cat was moving, right now? Could it be coming for him? There was just no way to tell.
