The Doctor

If a hologram could sweat, the Doctor would have wiped his brow by now. But since he couldn't, he just brushed off some imaginary bits of ash and said: 'Well, that was close.' His isolation blanket wasn't completely ruined so after making sure there weren't any flames left, he folded the rest of it neatly together and put it bak in his medical kit. Now what to do? Going back was an option, but not one he really liked.
'South it is!' he said and he continued his journey.

South please.

"Oh no!" Sally cringed as the ROUS's teeth caught on her foot as she swung overhead. It could have been worse--much, much worse--and fortunately once she'd made it well past the ROUS, she was able to examine the tear on her foot. It was small, and as long as she made sure not to put too much weight on it, it shouldn't tear too much further.

After a few test paces to make sure that it would hold, Sally continued East.

(OOC @Dimcairien Luiniel - Sally was heading East before the ROUS encounter, so she shouldn't be able to head 'back South' as per your last update? It would be back west.)

@Laintaen You head North. Alas, your luck has run out. A flame spurt erupts directly in front of you, blocking your path. RP your interaction with the fire. The success or failure will be determined by a dice roll.

@Eamila Bolger You head South. Things seem to have calmed down a bit at least for now as nothing dangerous occurs as you walk down to the next bend in the path. The path heads East or do you turn back?

@WRONG LEVER KRONK! You head East. Thankfully everything remains inside your foot. The path goes on for quite some distance before you come to yet another fork in the road. You can head North, South, or back West. OOC (Yes, you are correct. My bad with the direction mix-ups. They were all options you could go, just put the "back" with the wrong one.)

San with Moro

San jogged a few yards ahead of Moro as they rounded the bend. If anything was lurking to attack, better that she would be the first to find out. Her mother was far more important to the delicate balance of things in the world.

There was a barely perceptible change in the air right before she dropped into the pit. She opened her mouth to cry out. “Ahh!” With a flump, she landed in a pit of soft, gloopy stuff. She was momentarily relieved to have had her fall broken by this stuff, but the relief was quickly replaced by panic as she felt herself being sucked into it. “Mother! Help!” San shouted. She struggled to move toward the edge of the pit, where some tree roots protruded from the earth.

Moro skidded to a halt at the edge of the pit. “Stay still,” she commanded crouching low and sniffing the stuff. “It will pull you in faster if you struggle.” The huge wolf turned and tore a long vine from a nearby tree. The Snow Sand was up to San’s chin now, and she struggled to bring her hands above the surface. Moro flicked her head to toss one end of the vine to her daughter, then tugged and pulled. The huge wolf goddess used all her weight to free her daughter. San emerged from the pit, covered in sticky stuff and coughing.

“What an awful place!” San spat. She was on all fours, still recovering. Moro nudged her affectionately with her snout, and San stood and wiped her face with the back of a hand. The wolf-girl shouted some more. “Humans must have done this to this place. I can’t wait to get out of here!”

The Doctor

The smell of smoke was now faint and nothing around him suggested that there had been a fire. Was it just imagination? Or did he hear yelling somewhere close? Was that... a R.O.U.S? Whatever it might be?
The Doctor raised his eyebrows. It could be that this maze still had some tricks up it's sleeve. 'I better just go on and see what happens', he said. With a skip hop he went on, and headed East.

Prince Humperdink

Humperdink put out the last of the flames and gazed mournfully at his now ruined sleeve. Now his other puffy sleeve looked ridiculous. Just one puffy sleeve, what would people think? he wondered.

It was time to give up on finding Buttercup. The Dread Pirate Westley or whatever he called himself (who didn't even have a puffy shirt!) could just deal with her. She was way more trouble than she was worth, and besides, he didn't even like her. That was probably mutual, but he didn't care. It was time to go back to the castle and have an urgent consult with his tailor. But which way was home? He decided he'd best head East.

Sally hadn't seen any sight of Zero for quite some time, and she was beginning to think that it was a foolish idea to wander into this swamp following what she thought was Zero. Maybe she'd been wrong... She continued to dodge the hanging vines and the occasional odd spurt of flame, and she very quickly climbed a tree again anytime she heard the weird snuffling noise that had accompanied the first appearance of the ROUS. Fortunately, she traveled without incident for a quite a while.

When she came to the fork in the road, though, Sally looked back and forth between her options for a moment, unsure of how she should pick one. Eventually, she settled on heading North.

The heat was only growing more oppressive as BooBoo made her way deeper into the forest. She felt sweat beading on her brow and soaking into her clothes. Fortunately it cleansed a bit of the dirt from her clothing and improved her overall aroma just a touch. Suddenly a gout of flame spurted out of the ground and caught the bottom hem of what might once have been a dress (it was a bit difficult to tell). BooBoo stared at the flames and opened her mouth.

"BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" she screamed, entirely put out by this whole being on fire business. "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! FIRE! FLAMES! RUBBISH! JUNK! SWAMP! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" She beat at the flames with her gloved hands and sat down on the forest floor, throwing sand and dirt over the flames eating at her clothing.

Dread Pirate Roberts

As the Dread Pirate headed west, he found it quiet, too quiet. As if someone was waiting to ambush him. Someone, or something that was, and he hoped it wasn't another one of the creatures of immense size, or else he might not make it out of the Fire Swamp and his quest would be all in vain.

Shaking the feeling of dread off, the former farm boy known as Westley continued to tread in a northery direction until he thought that he heard that familiar growl from one of the creatures he faced before that he didn't think even existed. Deciding not to take his chances a second time (otherwise Buttercup might end up being married to that Prince Humperdinck character, which is who the Dread Pirate was trying to rescue her from in the first place), he decided to travel in a more southerly direction and hope he didn't run into any more of the R.O.U.S. or any of the hidden flame spurts (since he didn't know there was one where he encountered the creature of immense size; finding one was just pure luck on his part), since the Dread Pirate's clothing was starting to look like he was an actual pirate that found himself marooned on some kind of deserted island that happened to have a Fire Swamp (which was probably more natural than anything man would come up with, but he had been mistaken before, so who knew). The Dread Pirate continued to head in a southerly direction and hope that he wouldn't run into anything else unexpected in his quest to be finally reunited with his beloved.

@San You roll a 6 and the snow sand rolls a 4. Moro's quick thinking and usage of the vine clearly saved your life. Once recovered from your near death experience, you can go East, West, or South.

@Eamila Bolger You choose to head East. Everything is still eerily calm, but at least your exuberant attitude is helping you get through the maze. You can go North, South, or back West.

@Gwai-Gon Jinn You choose to head West. You're currently stuck in a maze that might be out to kill you, so why are you worrying about your clothes? And is a measly fire going to get in your way of doing what you want? You can go South or back East.

@WRONG LEVER KRONK! You choose to go North. Your quick thinking helps you continue on your way through the maze. Perhaps your stuffing will be a little worse for wear once (if) you get out of here, but so far everything is intact. You can go East or head back South.

@Menolly You roll a 1 and the fire rolls a 2. Unfortunately, words cannot quench flames, otherwise the fire would be running in fear. In your attempts to put out the flames on your robes, your glove catches on fire! What are you going to do?

@Lady of Shadow You choose to head South. The place looks strangely familiar. And that's because you're back to where you started! Do you go North or East?

Fire did not respond to verbal heckling, it seemed. And now her gloves were on fire. BooBoo had worked hard on these gloves! Well, really, she had found them in a gutter and put them on and been pleasantly surprised to find that they fit. They had had eight or so fingertips intact when she found them and now had no fingertips left, but it was very much the style of the thing. Ancient booers in every castle were expected to wear ratty layers and be able to flash their crazy eyes while screaming at royalty.

So BooBoo was a bit reluctant to let these go, but she valued her hands more than her gloves. There was no time to pull them off, so she plunged her hands into the damp loamy earth and threw her body down over the flames. Any booer worth her salt was also very good at setting fires in castle bedrooms, and just as good at smothering flames out in a hurry should an angry king or queen walk by.

Sally was surprised at how easy traversing this swamp was turning out to be. She was still being careful not to strain her foot--and the tear in it--too much, but she was beginning to feel a little apprehensive. However, there seemed no point in heading back the way she'd come, and so she continued on East, singing quietly under her breath.

"Can't shake this feeling that I have,
the worst is just around the bend..."

The Doctor

It might sound strange for a holographic program, but the Doctor... was a people person. Walking here all alone made him realize that more and more. Each step he was taking, brought him closer to... well, to what? To the end of the maze? Or the middle? To new danger or perhaps to meeting others who were searching for a way out? He disliked the silence, it was eerie. And yet when there were sounds, they weren't pleasant. More than once he had heard noises of screaming people, or fire and of something that was most likely even worse than fire.
No, he wasn't feeling comfortable. But he had come this far and decided that going back still wasn't an option. He would sing, to cheer himself up. A song of victory or defeat? ABBA would do well in both circumstances. Would it be offensive to sing 'The winner takes it all?' He decided on Waterloo, hoping that this swamp wouldn't be his Waterloo.

Rilla Banks, wondering in the Shire she has wound up?

Hmm. This place was pretty strange. Rilla couldn't remember seeing anything like it on the map of the Shire. It sort of had a bad smell to it...well, that must surely be the worst of it, right? With any luck, she'd soon find a nice pub where she could sit and snack on a bit of pumpkin pie in front of a nice warm fire!

Totally unaware of any lurking dangers, the hobbit set off into the maze armed with her walking stick and a bag full of snacks and pipeweed. Never knew when you might get a bit peckish.

Dread Pirate Roberts

It seemed heading south resulted in leading the Dread Pirate Roberts back to where he started. "I was afraid that this might happen." the former farm boy cursed, trying to make sure that he took a different direction this time, or else he might end up either fighting another R.O.U.S. (he was still pretty flabbergasted that they actually existed) or finding another one of those hidden flame spurts. "At this rate, Buttercup might be dead and buried before I ever make it out of this swamp!" the pirate in disguise mused, deciding to go in a more easterly direction this time and see where it would end up leading him. In a perfect world, it would lead him right into the path of that Prince Humperdinck character, but the former farm boy known as Westley knew that the world was far from being perfect (or else Buttercup might have known all along that he had a crush on her back in the day when he employed as a farm boy during happier times).

Heading in an easterly direction this time (he originally chose to go north, or at least he thought that he did), the Dread Pirate was starting to wonder if he would ever make it out of the Fire Swamp on his own. Perhaps he should have brought that Spaniard with him, but how would he have dealt with the creatures of immense size? the former farm boy wondered as he tried to choose a direction that would actually get him out of here instead of making him go around in circles.

To the east, please

He turned left, the flame wavered with him. He whooshed right, the flame whooshed faster. He couldn't feel its heat, but when he looked at it from the corner of his eyes it seemed to coalesce into a long, thin, skeletal shape. Bony fingers wreathed in smoke reached out to him and he backed away yapping fiercely.

But this was ridiculous! He could float! He could simply...the flame followed him up and up and up before it finally guttered and he glided back down to a few feet above the path on the other side. This is taking too long, he thought absently, I have to get out of here and find.............Jack?

Sorry for the wait folks. Also, in the hopes of (maybe) getting a few people through the maze before Halloween, the maze will be closing to new arrivals after October 22nd. I will keep updating though until people get bored or everyone gets through or dies in the attempt.

@Menolly You roll a 3 and the fire rolls a 4. For a moment it seemed that your ability to extinguish fire succeeded, but the fires of the Fire Swamp seem to have a mind of their own. One moment it looks like they have gone out and the next, it erupts once again in sudden fury. Perhaps you aren't as worth your salt as you claim. What is your next attempt in putting out or escaping the flames?

@Taethowen You choose to head East. Perhaps your song is tempting fate just a little bit too much. Suddenly the ground gives way in front of you and you begin to sink into the Snow Sand. How do you attempt to escape?

@Eamila Bolger You choose to head South. The fact that you are a hologram probably has something to do with how easy traversing the maze has been. After all, it's a bit tricky to try and kill something that is not alive in the traditional sense of the word. You can go East, West, or back North.

@Little Bird Lail You enter from the North. How you managed to get so far from the Shire is certainly a question. The smell of the Fire Swamp is a bit overwhelming, but perhaps you will find a place to light your pipeweed. After all, it is called a Fire Swamp. Do you head West or South?

@Lady of Shadow You choose to head East. As you head this way, you notice a set of footprints, the exact size and shape of your own. Are you heading in a circle? You can go North or back West.

@Yávië You roll a 3 and the fire rolls a 1. For awhile the fire attempts to follow your moving and gliding, but the unnatural up and down movement seems to confuse the fire. Are things sentient in this maze? At any rate, you are able to successfully pass the fire, whether you passed over it, by it, or threw it. Do you head North, East, or West?

Assistant Brute

Nothing threatening or even mildly intimidating was showing itself, and Brutey started to strut a little more confidently, chin up and broad shoulders squared with newfound self-assurance. He was in the process of wondering if this is what it felt like to be a protagonist when his foot caught on something and he squealed in fear as he fell down on the floor, rolling over and scrambling to pick up his sword once again to defend himself against the terrible... tree root.

He sniffed in frustration, stood up and dusted himself off in embarrassment, and determined to watch where he was putting his feet more carefully. The clear path curved away to the South and he followed it, eyes carefully watching the ground a few feet ahead of him for any more rogue tree roots that might destabilise his striding.

San with Moro

The human girl brushed at her arms, legs, and clothes, trying to remove as much of the sticky sand as she could. She spat a mouthful of the stuff onto the ground. Moro licked her head and hair clean. “This place is so creepy!” San complained. “That quicksand was way faster than any I’ve seen before.”

Moro nodded. “This is a strange place. Something tells me that we have not seen the strangest parts yet.”

San wiped the sand from her mask and checked that her knife was still at her side. Miraculously, it was. “Well, let’s get out of here,” she said. Mother and daughter walked away from the pit.

The dog growled suspiciously at the remains of the flame spurt and gave it a few fierce barks for good measure. His own voice sounded stage to him, high-pitched and...yappy. Wolfhounds didn't yap, he thought distracted, but he didn't look much like a wolfhound anymore either.

With his glowing nose--somehow that didn't seem very odd to him anymore--to light the way, he examined the path that split before him. Jack, Jack, Jack...where was Jack...? He sniffed around as best he could but the swamp smelled more or rotting plants than of anything useful. He huffed in confusion and decided to head WEST.

...Jack?...but who's Jack? Linny?

Melisandre

Finally, the Fire Swamp lived up to its name as a burst of flame erupted before her, cutting off further exploration. The Fire Priestess smiled as the firelight reflected back in her red eyes. "Valar Morghulus," she greeted the bonfire. "As one servant of the Lord of Light to another, I bid you welcome and seek your leave to pass further along this journey. There are places far beyond this swamp that must be brought into the light of our Lord, you know it as well as I. Remove yourself from my path."

Poison she knew would not harm her; her faith would protect her. Would it protect her still if the fire ignored her and she merely walked through it? She was no Mother of Dragons, but surely that skill was not reserved for Targaryen's alone. Melisandre stepped as close as she dared to the fire and gazed into its swirling, crackling depths, seeking to read her Lord's answer in the flames.

@Allacan ob Burzum You choose to head South. Nothing is happening here. Your confidence continues to grow, but be careful, it may just come back to bite you. Do you head East, West, or back North?

@THE MAIDEN FAIR You choose to head South. Alas, it is a dead end. There is no choice but to turn back and choose a new direction. Successfully avoiding the snow sand (this time), do you head East or West?

@Yávië You choose to head West. Nothing too exciting in this direction, though your newfound discovery of your bark is certainly something. Perhaps it's simply an effect of the Fire Swamp. Do you head South or back East?

@Laintaen You roll a 6 and a 4 (bonus roll because you're Melisandre and it's a fire incident) and the fire rolls a 5. Perhaps the fire knows of your special relationship with its kind or perhaps it's simply a short-lived spurt. Either way, the moment you step towards it and stare into its heart, the fire suddenly ceases. Do you head East or West?

The Doctor

One thing he had forgotten. The Doctor felt like Hansel and Gretel trying to find their way home. He had been looking ahead, but had he looked looked back? What where the last turns he had made? He remembered going South and East several times. That would mean he was going through the maze diagonally but was that good? He had entered from the north, but had that been in the middle, or on one of the sides? And how large was this maze anyway?
He decided to go for the pattern. He would go East again and see where that would lead him.

East please

The trail turned sharply south with no warning and the not-so-little ghost dog barely kept himself from gliding straight into a slime-covered tree. He overcorrected clumsily, spinning himself almost entirely around in a full circle. Suddenly he had the urge to stretch out with the front of his sheet as if to touch his paws to the ground and scramble for balance. He hadn't done that since he had first woken up in Halloween Town! Zero felt disorientedly...alive. Hardly paying attention to what was in front of him in his puzzlement, he followed the path SOUTH.

Dread Pirate Roberts

"I have been going around in circles after all." the Dread Pirate mused, when he came across some footprints that resembled his own. At this rate, Buttercup might be ready for the grave before he got out of here and met up with her again (probably after bearing a child or two with that Prince Humperdinck character, since she would have thought that Westley gave up on her and found somebody else).

Shaking his head to clear his mind of coming up with such a scenario, the former farm boy would either have to go North or back West the way he had come. "I guess I'm going to have to chance running into one of the creatures of immense size again." the pirate in disguise mused, since he wasn't planning on going back the way he had come. If he did that, he may never make it out of the Fire Swamp alive. This wasn't the first time that he wished that he should have talked that Spaniard and his giant friend (Fezzik was his name, from what he could recall of the way the Spaniard talked about him. The former farm boy known as Westley was often curious on how they first met, but never got the chance to actually ask) into accompanying him with his quest, since then he might have been reunited with his beloved by now, rather than continuing to be led around in circles.

@Eamila Bolger As you head East, the path begins to get lighter and lighter. It's not the light of fire, but the light of the sun. Suddenly you stumble out into the middle of a sunlight forest. You have survived the maze!

@Yávië You choose to head South. From ahead you hear a scurrying sound with what might be a bit of growling. Suddenly an R.O.U.S. is right in front of you! How do you deal with/avoid this beast?

@Lady of Shadow You choose to head North. You stumble upon the body of the now charred R.O.U.S. you battled with earlier. Hopefully none of it's kindred are nearby. You can head East or West.

Oh dear oh dear she was really lost. Had she had too much to drink at the Green Dragon and then run off on an ill-advised adventure again? Rilla let out a most dramatic sigh. Then she cringed at the awful smell assaulting her nose. Where to go, where to go, how to get back home?

She looked left. She looked right. Everything looked the same. She looked up at the sky and blinked at the sun. It didn't help. So Rilla set off in a random direction, unaware she was walking south. If she'd known, she might have had some Old Toby farms to look forward to if she ever managed to return to the Shire again anyway. "The road goes ever on and on," she sang to herself quite off-key. Or in this case, the swamp.

Had he had a sudden growth spurt? Zero seemed to be bigger than he ever had been, but he was still not nearly as big as the monstrosity that had suddenly appeared in front of him. He yapped, it growled. He yipped, it snarled. This was Not Very Good, Jack might have said, what an unusually sized rodent! Zero just barked some more.

There was one other thing he could do, but he hated to do it. It had never failed him before, but there was a certain risk, and his light-up pumpkin nose was his favorite thing! He would hate to lose it in this mud pit. But, growling and snarling, the giant rat was stalking closer. So Zero sneezed.

His jack-o'-lantern nose came away with a barely audible pop! and bobbed lightly in the air in front of him. The R.O.U.S. fixed its gaze on it and Zero, now smokey white and nearly invisible in the gloom, attempted to skirt along the edge of the path to get around the monster. Behind him, his nose darted this way and that like an over-sized firefly, doing its best to send the rodent chasing after its own tail.

As the Dread Pirate headed North, he came across the body of the R.O.U.S. he defeated earlier and knew that he was on the right track. "Now I have to go the opposite way that I went before." the former farm boy thought to himself, since that only lead him back to the beginning and he wasn't about to repeat that mistake again.

If his initial assumption was to go west. perhaps he should go in a more easterly direction this time, and see if it actually lead him out of the Fire Swamp and closer to being reunited with his beloved before it was too late. The former farm boy known as Westley didn't know what he would do if he ended up at the start again, since then he might as well give up, and try to find his way around the Fire Swamp if he could instead of actually going through it. If going west last time he found himself in this part of the swamp was wrong, perhaps going east was the right course of action. Even if it lead him into more dangers, at least he tried, which is more than he could say for that Prince Humperdinck character.

To the east, please

San with Moro

San groaned. They had come to a dead end. Trees grew close all around them, with thick undergrowth filling in the gaps and making this part of the path impassible.

Moro sniffed the air. “Nothing hidden ahead,” she reassured San. “We will turn back.” The great white wolf turned and began to retrace their steps. San gave the trees one last look, then hurried after her mother. They managed to skirt the sand that had nearly devoured San not so long ago, then turned down a different path without a word.

West just kidding, east!

I'm happy to keep updating this as long as people want to play. I'm having fun coming up with prompts and hopefully they are enjoyable. So far one person has made it out and no one has died, so your odds of survival are rather in your favour.

@Little Bird Lail You choose to go South. Your little hobbit self is very lost and such a long way from home. The darkness of the Fire Swamp looms overhead, but nothing leaps out at you … yet. Do you head back North towards the entrance you came in or head East and make your way deeper into the Fire Swamp?

@Yávië You roll a 5 and a Bonus roll (because you're a ghost) of a 3. The R.O.U.S. rolls a 1. The giant rodent falls for your trick and begins to curiously gnaw at its own tail. Once past the creature do you head East, South, or back West?

@Lady of Shadow You choose to head East. The path immediately twists and turns and before long you're headed northward. At least it's a new direction. Eventually you come to a crossroads. You can continue to head North, go West, or turn back South.

@Zôrzimril You choose to head East. Is the swamp getting a bit lighter or is it simply playing tricks on you? You can head North, South, or back West.

The Doctor

Well well! Even without leaving crumbs behind, the Doctor had found the way out of the Maze. 'It's amazing!', he said. 'And of course, that pun was intended. Well! That was fun! I am tempted to go back in and see if I can find a pattern... and why wouldn't I? Perhaps from the South, this time?'
'Sickbay to the Doctor.'
The voice of Lieutenant Paris sounded through the misty woods. 'Doctor, playing time is over. We need you here, one of the crew members has a dislocated shoulder.'
The Doctor shrugged. It had been great fun. And yes, of course it was he who found the way out first. He was after all, a well learned and experienced hologram.
