Silas with General Woundwort

Silas looked anxiously at his bunny. The animal in question was staring fixedly upwards, as though he could discern the stars even through the bright glare of day. Impossible, of course; but who could say what those red staring eyes really gazed upon?

“Are you ok, boy?” Silas asked hesitantly. “What do you see up there?”

grrrRRrrraawrrrll, came the reply. An unusual term for the Wain, to be sure.

It had been hard keeping Dragon's tutu clean as he munched down on slugs and grubs, but Tyrion had succeeded in doing so. He had taken the saddle of the badger. As he lay with his head back on the crook of a tree, he watched the badger nose about in a field off the track. Suddenly he disappeared. This was not good. They had fallen behind the other racers. Taking a small violin from his pack, Tyrion began to play Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. They had been practicing. Soon Dragon's head popped out of a hole. He he began to pirouette towards the dwarf in a clumsy badger-like way. He was soon back in the saddle. The race went on.

Gwai with Rocky
Team Rohan

"Let's go, Rohan! Bam bam ba ba bam!" Gwai chanted, although feeling a bit silly as she was the only one taking up the chant. There soon wasn't much to cheer about, as Rocky once more got distracted, this time by something shiny.

"What do you have there, Rocks?" Gwai asked him quizzically. Rocky looked excited, and out of a small hole soon began excavating treasures, clearly thinking these were valuable items. He pulled out a Whozit and a Whatzit, a Thingamabob and a Whatchamacallit, plenty of Gizmos and Gadgets.

Gwai sighed. "Those aren't really treasures," she tried to explain to Rocky, who was doing his best to come through his red Ariel Wig with his Thingamabob. "That's an old fork! The race track is that way, I"ll buy you a comb!" she exclaimed

Ghoulie, a Delivery Goblin

Ghoulie of Goblin-town crept in past the hedge and found his way into the Shire without being spotted. It was the first time the green-skinned goblin had made a delivery here before. Apparently there was some kind of celebration going on around Middle-earth, and the delivery goblins were being sent to all parts of the world with strange "trick-or-treat" gifts. Well, to be honest, the gifts were not that strange for a goblin. Normally they had to deliver sweet shiny things and corny love letters, but all the presents he'd been delivering were nasty and fun.

He'd been given a quick description of the recipient he was looking for. A dwarf, possibly with curly hair, and a very unimpressive effort at a beard, perhaps with a cup (or bottle) of wine in his hand. Well, he wasn't holding any wine, but there was a dwarf (Tyrion) over there in a field playing violin for a badger. And as far as dwarves went, he was surprisingly lacking in beard length. That had to be the guy! Ghoulie crept over to the fellow, holding a dirty sack in one hand.

"Trick or treat, @Tyrion Lannister !" exclaimed Ghoulie when he reached his target and removed his hood. He then shook the contents of the sack out in front of Tyrion. Out came a bunch of severed mouse heads which rolled towards his feet. Amongst the heads was a note which could be read: "My regards. Tywin Lannister."

Before anyone could enquire or argue, the goblin scuttled off not to be seen again.

Eamila Bolger with Connie the Coney

What was this? It almost seemed that Connie was flying! She was way ahead of the rest of the field!
Eamila cheered loudly and proudly. But then... suddenly Connie was gone. Somehow vanished in thin air. What could have happened?
A sudden cheering and laughing came from a spot next to the road. 'Whooooooohoooooaaaah!'
'Connie, what are you doing?' Ea bent forward to try and see what was happening. The sound of splashing, laughing and streaming was faint, but it was there. Ea shook her head. What was Connie up to?
In the mean time, Connie was having a blast. She had found some kind of channel that had been created by the cartwheels of the many carts that were brought to the market and back by farmers. This particular channel had deepened and filled with water after the rain that had fallen last night. Connie was speeding forward as if she was in a jet stream. The channel was too small for badgers or squirrels, but a small coney fit in there perfectly.
She reappeared wet, but in a good mood, far ahead of the others on the track.
'Wow, Connie, you are amazing! Keep it going!' Eamila hoped that her coney could keep the lead!

Dragon picked up speed. Even with the dwarf on his back and the tight tutu around his mid section, he could still gallop at a good pace. He heard that some roasting might be going on and he was after all, an omnivore. He could all most smell the juices of a large Butterbur roasting over a pit. But likely or not, he was imagining things from all the wine fumes in the air that were coming from the dwarf on his back. Still, he galloped on.

Tyrion watched as the severed mouse heads rolled towards him. For a moment , at least, he thought his father really cared, or why bother sending him (dead mice heads) anything at all? Alas, a moment does not last long.
"I am your son. I have always been your son” twang ..the sound of a crossbow bolt flying towards Tywin's heart.
"Here is my thanks, father!"

Eamila Bolger with Connie the Coney

That was unpleasant indeed! As soon as Connie reappeared on the track - all wet but happy - she bumped into mouse heads. A loud shriek was heard all the way up to Green Hill Country and Connie was so upset that she ran backwards on the track, in Ea's direction.
'No Connie, no! Not that way!', Ea cried. 'It's alright, those nasty bad things were cleared away! You can safely run now!'
It took her two carrots and one apple before Connie felt good enough to continue. She was still ahead, but not so far anymore. The race was not done yet, it was exciting!

Eamila Bolger with Connie the Coney

After the advantage that Connie seemed to have gained in the first part of the race, the second part seemed to be going from bad to worse. After the shock with the mice heads, Connie now seemed to be afraid and upset again. She sat down on her fluffy coney tail and had her little paws in front of her eyes.
'Connie! What is wrong! What happened!'
There were tears in Connies eyes and she shivered uncontrollably as she whispered: 'There was a spotted ghost.. on the path, right before me!.'
'Come on now, Connie. Ghosts don't exist, you know that!'
'But I saw one! I really did!'
Ea sighed. 'Connie. Don't you remember the start of the race and the costumes of all the others? I bet you just saw McGregor, Dwimmerlaiks coney! He is dressed like one, can't you recall that?'
'Is he??' Very carefully Connie took one paw away from her coney face and she looked at Eamila. 'Really?'
'Really. Come on now. You are doing so well and I am so proud of you, but you must keep going if you want to win this race!'
Connie took her other paw away from her little face and sighed. 'I guess you are right.'
'Good girl. Come on now, keep running!'

Silas with General Woundwort

Woundwort had hitched himself along at least somewhat in the right direction, but was still far behind some of the more enthusiastic racers. Silas was convinced that the deep, dark heart of rage that lay within Woundwort could also act as a vessel of untapped energy; once released, it could propel him at an incredible speed ahead of the rest. That, or he might savage the other racers to death. But how to unleash it?

While Dragon had been off digging for worms, Tyrion had fallen into a wine induced sleep. What felt like days late, the dwarf opened a bleary eye. All seemed quiet except for the birds and natures natural noises. Slowly opening his other eye, he sat himself up and looked around. Dragon had gotten into the habit of resting his snout on the dwarf's knee while he slept. But the badger was no where to be seen. Looking up at the sky for some indication of what day it might be, and not being particularly adept at reading these kind of signs, Tyrion sighed, got up and stretched his crooked legs. He would have to start walking and hope that the badger caught up to him in time. The other racers were far ahead.
After a time, the dwarf could be seen walking down the track playing his violin - his logic being that, may be the badger would hear the music and follow. The dwarf already missed the saddle, which was still on the Dragon's back.

Dwim Took with Coney McGregor

Dwim took his eye off Coney McGregor for one second, and true to his Halloween costume, he disappeared like a ghost! It was just that a second delivery goblin had arrived at the race course, and it was too distracting for Dwim not to look at. In that brief moment, the ghostly coney had gone rogue and entered one of the hobbit homes next the track. Inside he found the larder and was sniffing around for something to nibble on. The door to the home had been wide open, but no one was home. They were probably out watching the race.

Unfortunately for Coney McGregor, one of the bounders had seen him sneak into the home and decided to take action. He disappeared inside, then reappeared shortly thereafter. He was holding McGregor by his ear, which was poking out of his ghost costume. "Who owns this one?" he yelled out to the animal owners. "Caught him sniffin' 'round old Bella Proudfoot's larder, I did!"

But before there was time for an answer, the bounder cried out in pain. "Yeeoww!"

Coney McGregor's mouth had escaped one of the eye holes of his costume, and he'd yanked his head around and bitten his finger. The bounder dropped him in shock, and before he could grab at the coney again, he had streaked back out onto the race track to make a great getaway. Dwim went red and looked down at the grass, hoping the bounder would not discover it was his racer who had caused all the trouble.

One D6 and one D20 thanks!

Eamila Bolger and Connie the Coney

Gradually the track was coming into greener country. Their path was now going through beautiful meadows with green grass, a couple of fruit trees and lots of flowers and butterflies. Eamila loved flowers and was easily distracted when she saw a couple of very nice ones. Surely she could pick a few while Connie was hopping on? She went off the track and chose the bright pink ones. While humming a song, she picked a beautiful bouquet.
But when she looked up again... there was Connie right next to her!
'What are you doing love?', Ea exclaimed. 'You should be racing!'
But Connie looked very excited and kept picking from a bush with tiny white and yellow flowers that Ea hadn't even noticed before. 'What is it that you've got there?', she asked. Connie sniffed and smiled. Carefully Ea took one of her flowers from her. 'You found chamomile! That's good, very helpful when you've got an upset stomach or some kind of inflammation. Thanks a bunch, Connie! I'll bring these, dry them and make tea from them if you don't mind. But you need to get back to the track and race!'

Silas with General Woundwort

Woundwort had stopped. His mouth was slightly agape, taking in huge, shivering breaths; his whiskers were vibrating furiously as he inhaled.

“What is it, boy?” Silas inquired anxiously. The Rabbit’s ears were pricked straight up as his head swivelled, slowly, menacingly, towards the trees.

Silas could see nothing out of the ordinary; just trees, creaking, branches waving slowly. But Woundwort appeared to sense something he could not.

The beast let out an angry, coughing bark. Contemptuously, Woundwort ripped up a jaw-full of grass from the ground and spat it out in the direction of the Forest, as if daring any sentient plant life form to challenge him.

Nothing happened.

“Just keep running,” Silas begged.

Gwai with Rocky
Team Rohan

At least Rocky was trying to go the right direction for a change. She could see him slowing down as he began to reminisce about some of their previous racing experiences. Gwai immediately became reminiscent as well. "Remember that time the lava snake almost ate you?" she asked rhetorically, since he still had a scar. "Or that time you got lost in Fangorn, and the whole race had to be stopped to go look for you?"

Coming out of her reverie, Gwai added a bit more pragmatically, "Or that time in the Shire you dressed as Steampunk Ariel, and lost because you couldn't go in a straight line?" she asked tartly.

Tyrion was just about to have a sit down rest from all the walking when Dragon suddenly appeared galloping up the road towards him. Where the badger had been, the dwarf did not have a clue. Still, he was sure glad to see him and the saddle. His wine skin, luckily, had become quite light over the last little while and that was a good thing when walking. But when in the saddle, one needed something to help pass the hours away while the badger raced.
"Good to see you, Dragon!" said the dwarf in a familiar way." You don't have to explain to me where you have been, but what say we track down a pub where I can find some wine to fill my skin, eh? What do you say? I got some worms, too!"
The badger looked at the dwarf then plopped down on the dusty road and would not budge. Tyrion tried to persuade the badger into moving on with promises of grubs and slugs and even a taste of a new fat earthworm species that he had heard of, over by a certain Farm Maggots way- which tasted like fried mushrooms and was rather on the plumb side for an earthworm. Still the badger wouldn't move. Rubbing his chin, trying to figure out how to get the badger up, Tyrion accidently breathed into the cup of his hand. He recoiled from the reek of his own breath and suddenly a light went on inside his head.
Back in the saddle again, the dwarf and badger raced down the track. Tyrion had a toothbrush sticking out of the pocket of his leather vest. Even a badger has its limits when it comes to four day old wine breath.

Tyrion with Dragon

Tyrion had painted the last of the racer stripes down the badgers body with a water base paint. He had purchased it at the pub that sold him the wine. Now they would have to pray it didn't rain and wash the stripes away. Dragon had some pretty cool stripes on him now. Flames, shooting out from his sides.
It appeared that stripes made a racer go faster. And this was the reason why a safety belt had been built into the saddle. There were three racers ahead of the dwarf and badger. It was time to see if the new stripes would make them go faster and catch up.

Eamila Bolger with Connie the Coney

Without really realizing it, Eamila had followed Connie all the way down the track - from the place outside the fences of course, where spectators and coaches were meant to sit and stand. Now that Connie was more than half way down the race, there was time for some chatting. Ea was particularly looking forward to the buffet that was going to be served after the race. She had heard that there were some excellent pies to taste from.
Connie would be more than happy with a few more carrots, she knew. But she seemed very excited about the end of the race because of something else.
While happily hopping forwards, she pointed her sniffing nose towards a small hill near the finish line. That was where she was going to sit to watch the fireworks afterwards. Ea knew perfectly well why she loved them so much. Even as she was just a very little coney, Ea had brought her to each party she could. So even as a little bunny, Connie had been familiar to loud voices, singing and... fireworks. The banging, the sparkling, the crackling, the flashes and of course the bright colors: Connie couldn't get enough of them.
'That is why you are running so fast, isn't it little one?', Ea said. 'It's not that you like racing this much... you like what comes afterwards!'

Menolly with very sassy coney Hopalong

After emerging from the badger den, Hopalong continued on the track, but without any particular speed or urgency. Menolly walked alongside, calling out encouragement, but after the third time Hopalong stopped to smell the flowers and eat a few bites of flower petals, Menolly sighed. Winning wasn't exactly the point of this, but Hopalong had shown such promising speed earlier. Now the little coney sat still, nibbling at the grass and thoroughly ignoring her human, except for an occasional pointed look where Menolly could almost swear the coney was rolling her eyes. Was it possible for coneys to roll their eyes?

Hopalong had proved to be very motivated by snacks before, so Menolly crouched down and held out a handful of tantalizing salad greens, just out of the coney's reach and a little further along the track. One reluctant hop. Two. It was working!

Dwim Took with Coney McGregor

Coney McGregor's flight to safety had resulted in a great surge into second place. His detour into Mrs. Proudfoot's larder hadn't really done any harm then. As he neared Woodhall, he came across a group of elves (a rare sighting indeed!) who seemed quite intrigued by the animals racing along. They must have taken a liking to McGregor's ghost costume, because they came straight up to him and tried to engage in conversation. One of the elves even invited him to join their wandering party to dance and sing some merry songs. The coney didn't want to be too rude, although he suspected this was a ploy by the elven racing party to distract him and sabotage his race. But even if the invitation was genuine, he did not know how to dance and certainly had no way of singing. He turned his bum towards them, where his little tail was poking out the back of his costume. He waggled his tail at them then took off again, eager to get himself back into the lead of the race.

One B roll please.
Edit: sorry, old habits... a D20 roll is what I meant!

Tyrion with Dragon
How could a badger be so afraid of a bird?!?! Especially a badger named Dragon!?!? A huge bird had flown out of the forest (there must be a body of water on the other side of the forest for a Huron that size to be in this neck of the woods), its shadow fell over the badger who immediately bucked the dwarf off it's back and coward down in the dirt. Tyrion tumbled into the dirt, then righting himself, sat up and brushed some dirt from his vest (his tooth brush seeming to have disappeared- oh oh). Dragon lay shaking in his flaming stripes, even though the Huron was far off across the trees on the other side of the forest by now.
Making his way over to the badger, the dwarf knelt and rubbed the top of Dragon's head, attempting to reassure him. He began speaking to the frightened creature.
'I once read a story in a book about a brave badger named, Dragon. He was smaller than his name suggested, but he was full of courage and might. Smaller than all the rest of the badgers, sometimes he was bullied and teased. But this never discouraged the small badger, for he had the heart of a dragon - power and strength. And he carried this with him through all his life and never let anything that was not an immediate threat, scare him or discourage him.
And that is why I named you, badger, Dragon (and because I like Dragons). So come now, do not be afraid. Let us try and make the finish line so we can enjoy some wine and worms at a leisure pace.'

D20 roll please.

Jorgy, Racing as Himself with Pearl

With Pearl’s support, Jorgy Underash believed he could do anything. The support of friends, he had learned, was one of the greatest gifts in the entire world. His old life it had been a snake eat snake world; he’d had no friends, no colleagues. It was all different now. He had many friends, more friends than he knew what to do with in fact! Jorgy could have never imagined such a bountiful and magnanimous group. Even though he was racing against them, he was going to make his friends proud. He had to turn on his racing instinct do that. He was amazed at how much easier it was to see everything from a higher position. He had been so used to seeing everything from the ground level that every now and then he was floored by the way the earth slipped and slopped and dipped. The world was not a flat plane, that was for sure.

As he hopped along, he noticed the ground slanted over a portion of the racetrack. All the other racers seem to be either avoiding it or they simply didn’t see it. As he hopped closer, an idea began to form in his mind. “A short cut!” he grinned and hopped as fast as he could, making the slight detour.

He could take a bit of momentum bounding down the slope and he was still fresh enough that the climb back up wouldn’t erase all the speed.

His legs began to burn with the exertion but his mighty hobbit thews would not be denied. He had even managed to make up some of the ground he had lost when he was attacked by the grasshopper. Excellent! He was well on his way now!

Oh dear! It looks like quite a few of our racers are in a bit of a pickle at the moment!

@Menolly with coney Hopalong (2 D20: 1, 1 , 1D6: 1) -5, -5, +1(6/15) Oh dear! Your racer has gotten spotted by not one but TWO hunting parties of dogs, how do they escape them both?

@Dwimmerlaik with coney McGregor (D20: 20) +10 (9/15) Your racer has found a short cut, describe it!

@Tyrion Lannister with badger Dragon (D20: 17) +2 (13/15) Your racer seems to think some grub is a splendid idea, and demands you regale him with a story of a feast while he marches on towards the finish line. Preferably a badger feast.

@Walpurgisnacht Pearl with 'bunny' Jorgy (D20: 8, D6: 1) -2, +1(9/15) You've been led astray by an ill-placed marking near the track making you think you were going the right way. How do you find your way back?

Eamila Bolger with Connie

What was that? All of a sudden McGregor was speeding faster than light and appearing right before Connie. 'Wow!', Eamila exclaimed. 'Where did that coney come from all of a sudden?'
Connie didn't seem to mind. Her attention was focussed on some of her friends on the side of the track. 'What are you doing?' Ea asked with big question marks in her eyes. 'If you want to win, you need to go faster, dear!'
But Connie hopped to the fence, joined her friends in a line and started line dancing. Ea couldn't help herself: she had to laugh since it looked very cute. But it wasn't supposed to be this way, was it? 'Connie, you dance very well and you look adorable. So do your friends. But this isn't what you are here for! Come, ask your friends to cheer for you instead, and invite them for the party that we hold afterwards. Then you'll be able to dance with them. Okay?'

Another D20 please.

Tyrion with Dragon

'...and the grubs and slugs were placed into a boiling pot of herbal earthworm stew. The pot was covered and removed from the flame to simmer and release the flavors from the larvae and the shell. Also on the menu one would find fruit compôte (French for mixture) made of whole or pieces of fruit such as, apples, pears, plums and elderberries, in a yellow sweet clover syrup . An assortment of bird eggs ranging from blue to speckled also finds a place on the table at the Badger's Feast, along with; nuts, seeds, acorns and field corn. But the piece de résistance is, the Small Mammal Food Cake. The Small Mammal Food cakes are made with bird egg whites alone and no yolks. The whites are whipped with yellow sweet clover until very firm before the flour is gently folded in, resulting in a snowy-white, airy, and delicate cake that marries beautifully with small mammals. '
Tyrion closed the book he was reading from and took a sip from his wine flask. Dragon seem to be enjoying the description of the Badger's Feast that the dwarf had found in one of his books - the badger had be jogging alone at a steady pace during the whole reading, which was a good way to attempt to win a race.

Pearl, Racing Jorgy

“Oh no!” Pearl cried. Jorgy had veered off course (not out of the ordinary for him, though this was a bit more literal than usual). She hopped up and down in place with anxiety, hoping that she could perhaps see where he was headed.

“Jorgyyyyy!” she called, jogging ahead along the race course and waving her little flag to draw his attention. “This way! You’re going the wrong way!”

At the sound of his BFF’s voice, Jorgy changed course and was heading back onto the more, er, beaten path. “There you go!!” Pearl cheered, waving the flag once more. “You can do it, Jorgy! Go, go, go!”

D6 and D20 please

Menolly with coney Hopalong, escaping in style

Hopalong hopped along the track, staying out of trouble for once. But it looked as though trouble was coming to her. Two packs of dogs were converging on her where she sat. The little coney sat still, looking at one pack of dogs bearing down on her, then the other. Her little nose twitched. Her little ears settled back against her head. She could see the dogs closer now, teeth bared, saliva streaming from their mouths. A little closer and she could hear them breathing fast and harsh. Closer, closer...

Hopalong leapt into the tall grass off the track at the last possible moment and the two packs of dogs careened into each other, howling and snarling in confusion. She perked her ears back up and hopped through the grass, stopping to snack on a likely dandelion.

Dwim Took with Coney McGregor

It seemed that doing cheeky and naughty things to people and then making a quick getaway worked wonders for Coney McGregor, because all of a sudden he was back in the lead! Dwim let out a mighty cry in response. "YEAH CONEY!!" The hobbit pumped his fist in the air then yelled out some more encouragement. "That's the way! Don't let anything distract you from victory!"

A quick little shortcut through Mildred Bolger's backyard ensured that he kept his lead, even with the old lady attempting to block his path with a rake and threatening to whack him with it. Once again he made a quick getaway then hopped back onto the track.

One D6 and one D20 please.

Ahead of the dwarf and badger was a line of dancing ( singing) bunnies that , well, there was no words to describing the scene , suffices to say, it blew the dwarf's mind away - HEY BIG SPENDER
Dragon, on the other hand, seemed glad to just see the sign that read, FINISH LINE.
Tyrion dismounted and took the saddle off the badger. Brushing off their tutus one last time, he then took out his violin and played a sweet tune, which accompanied the badger over the finishing line.

Eamila Bolger and Connie the Coney

Connie seemed to have gotten wings after the dancing. She had not seen the way the Dwarf Tyrion looked. Ea had seen it though, and laughed.
'Sorry 'bout that', she said to Tyrion. 'They cannot help themselves. Doesn't your Dragon want to dance with them later on? With a tutu like that... he would fit in perfectly!'
When she looked back at the track, she was amazed. Only Dwim's McGregor was there, at the head of the line. Where was Connie?
Suddenly she heard somebody calling. 'The eagles are coming!! The eagles are coming!'
And indeed, the shadow of a big bird fell on the contestants and the public. It wasn't an eagle though. It was a heron, flapping wildly with his wings to stay in the air and not have a painful crash.
'Why in the world is that bird having so much trouble flying?', Ea wondered. But then she saw. On the birds feet hung a tiny coney who now she was up in the air, looked even smaller.
'Connie! What are you doing! Be careful!'
But Connie seemed to be having fun. She was way ahead of the rest of the racers when she finally let go and fell in a pile of fresh cut grass. With a 'whoopieee' she hopped on. She was almost there!

[OOC @CHAOS: Looks like you added two extra rolls to my progress. I should have been at 11/15 after last round]

Dwim Took with Coney McGregor

Coney McGregor was in the lead, and after the success of his last shortcut, the ghostly little coney decided to take another shortcut. Although this time there was extra incentive. The shortcut would also involve a little nibble of Maggot's mushroom patch. He managed to sneak in without any trouble, but the farmer's dogs seemed to be able to smell him, because they began barking immediately and charged in his direction. McGregor panicked, not knowing what to do. Was he about to face his death? Oh, that's right, he was already supposed to be dead. He was dressed as a ghost! Maggot's dogs had never seen anything like this before. They did not know what sort of creature they were dealing with. Picking up on this, McGregor hopped in their direction to give them a scare, and they yelped with fright, tucked their tails between their legs, and dashed back to the house.

Coney McGregor was free, and when he made it back to the racetrack he found he was still near the lead in second place.

Dwim Took with Coney McGregor

Farmer Maggot was not going to give up that easily! His dogs may have been frightened but he sure wasn't. He charged out onto the track, giving Dwim the most angry eye imaginable. "YOUR coney... was eating... MY mushrooms!" he yelled out, short of breath, before continuing his chase. Coney McGregor flew down the track like he'd never flown before. His ghost costume was not fooling anyone anymore. He simply had to flee for his life.

"GO GO GO!" Dwim yelled. He was a Took from the West Farthing and did not want no farmer from the eastern border getting a hold of his dear coney.

Coney McGregor heard the call and hopped like never before. Farmer Maggot tripped over a root, and although he kept his footing, it provided enough time for the little racer to create a gap to get away from the angry hobbit. Phew...

Silas with General Woundwort

The shape was dark and shadowed, but Woundwort could still see the points of its ears, black as velvet, and the shining red eyes.

The General stood up on his hindquarters and roared defiantly. Begone, Black Rabbit! Today is not the day that I stop running!

Silas was oblivious to the entire exchange, as he had given up on coaxing his recalcitrant rabbit and was instead searching through his waistcoat pockets for snacks.

Menolly with coney Hopalong, getting muddy

Menolly couldn't help but notice that Hopalong was not making any forward progress, and indeed was moving so slowly she might even be going backwards. Hopalong was having a grand time playing in the mud at the edge of the track, and as she noticed a badger wearing a fetching tutu much, much further ahead toward the finish line, she had an idea.

She stretched up on her long feet and struck a ballerina pose, gliding smoothly over the surface of the mud. For good measure, she added an artistic leap at the end of her glide, landing right back on the track.
