Where are my NUTS?!?

Image
Credit for grid: @Fleeg. Photo: my dad
Premise: It’s a lovely autumn day in Fangorn Forest, and you are a deranged squirrel.

(Or any other creature (or person) you would like to play as.)

What are you doing? Why, you’re searching for nuts for your winter store! As a bonus, you’re also looking for last year’s winter store... which you buried somewhere and forgot about.

To play, simply pick a square on the grid and RP searching in it for nuts. Or any other kind of forest food.

Some squares will contain the desired nuts! Others, alas, will contain nothing. One lucky person might find last year’s hoard. Some more unfortunate squares will contain things like Enraged Badgers and the like, which you will have to deal with before choosing another squarea to search.

RULES!

- don’t Godmode anyone without permission
- Please choose one square to search per round (I.e. update from me). You may post as many times you like in a round for RP purposes but please don’t consecutively, unless 24 hours has elapsed since your last post.
- Please indicate your chosen square at the bottom of each post, in bold.
- Each square may be searched only once - well, you can search it again if you want but whatever is in it will be gone
- You may post as any character you wish. I encourage woodland creatures, sentient foxes etc. You may post as multiple characters but the above rule still applies.
- Label OOC as OOC
- I expect some RP with each post but it can be super short and snappy.
- I’ll do updates in all bold so please avoid this

Squareas searched: all the As, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, C1, C4, C7, C8, B8, D3, D8, E5, F8, G3, H3, H7, I3, I4, I6, I7, I8, J1, J2, J3, J6, J7, J8

Three Raccoons....not in a coat

Hob, Bob and Reginald the Third had made it from Hobbiton to Fangorn. Having heard there was a stash of nuts left by senile squirrels the three brothers ever eager for a good meal with little work had made the journey as quickly as their little clawed paws could carry them. Upon reaching Fangorn they realized just how silly this idea was but they were now hungry and despite how large the forest was they were going to do their absolute best to find some nuts. There was a good bit of arguing over where to start and finally they came up with a completely logical and rational plan. LOOK EVERYWHERE. With that they began ferociously scratching at the leaf litter to see if they could find anything food wise for their stomachs were quite empty after the long trip from Hobbiton to Fangorn

(This is SO exciting, because now I can resurrect the character I came up with for my first ever RP post on new Plaza, Square the Squirrel, so named for her love of non-spherical acorns.)

Square was still nursing a chipped tooth from her flying encounter with what can only be described as the hardest nut she had ever had the displeasure of attempting to sink her teeth into. She didn't let it bother her though, as it wasn't painful, and it made far more interesting patterns in the food she tried to eat. She also had a sneaking suspicion that if she ever did need to bite a living thing, the chipped edge might do a bit more damage to the unlucky foe.

Squirrels don't fight, Square, we take flight! She could hear the severe squeak of Papa Squirrel now, chiding her when she was just a tiny kit as she tried to chase a mouse who had had the nerve to forage at the base of HER family tree.

It was a cool, but otherwise pleasant autumnal day in the heart of the forest. Square had taken a nap in a particularly squelchy pile of fallen leaves that morning, and as such was in a fantastic mood. However, food was never far from her mind, and she was very aware that the cooling mornings meant only one thing, the Long Sleep Festival was not too far away. Square had mixed feelings about this most sacrosanct of Squirrel celebrations. It involved sleeping, of course, which was truly a good thing. But Square had never quite had the same knack for it as everyone else, and to be perfectly honest, she found it incredibly dull for many days at a time.

But it did mean food was scarce, which could be a problem. Like all other woodland creatures, Square and her squirrel clan would eat up as much as they could in preparation for the Festival. Only problem this year, was Square couldn't remember where she had buried all of her many prized nuts. She started scavenging around the pile of leaves she'd just clambered out of, just on the off-chance she'd missed a stray nut.

But then her large beady eyes caught sight of one... two... no, THREE... she wasn't even quite sure what they were, but THREE creatures who were definitely not from around here. She did not like the look of their large faces with their very dishonest looking black and white stripes across their faces.

Deciding instead of staying put, or moving further away, like other lesser and more cowardly squirrels, she would make it perfectly clear to them that this was HER turf, and they were not welcome to any of her nuts (for she considered all nuts in this part of the forest to be hers). She scurried arrogantly over to the spot right next door to them, and resumed her digging.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

Mister Black stood under the eaves of Fangorn. He was newly arrived to the forest having left his home in Mirkwood to find more satisfying and nutritional food. Seeds and nuts mostly, but berries and acorns would be a treat too. Even some new species of fungus, sap, and tree bark would be enjoyable. All the forage in Mirkwood was small and underripe. It tasted quite flat and dusty. It left a squirrely quite parched after a day nibbling about. And the water, oily with an unpleasant smell, wasn't the greatest thirst quencher. And then of course, there was that enchanted stream that Mister Black said he would never drink out of again. But when ones mouth is puckered tight and the water is in sight, well, the thirst overrides the caution - and once again, one finds themselves a week later stretched out on their back staring up at the leaves on the trees. Mister Black was surprised and relieved that he had never been cocooned and eaten by some giant spider as he lay in pleasant dreams.

So here he was a strange to the forest but not to the foraging of food. He was so, so, eager to sink his teeth into a sun ripened nut. Standing on his back legs, he stretched to his full height and gazed about. The coast seemed clear. Twitching his nose one last time, he dashed off into the forest.

@Fuin Elda The three raccoons, rummaging around, have found only LEAVES...

But @Nia Square searching right next to them has uncovered 3 NUTS right away!

Whilst @Drifa Mr Black has done even better, scoring a little cache of 4 NUTS. Wow!

Dart the Nuthatch
Up high in a tree in the middle of the forest was a little round cavity and out of the hole poked a little black beak followed by a feathered head. Across the eye was a handsome stripe of black beneath a white brow. Back and forth the black and white head bobbed, scanning for danger for the woods was full of scary things much bigger than a small nuthatch. But Dart's bravery was not match for his stature and he would not be cowed!

It was going to be Dart’s very first winter in this world and he was determined to gather a good supply of nuts and seeds so he could be a proud poppa come spring. The more food he gathered, ate and fattened up, the better his chances would be with the lady-nuthatches. And he heard whispers there was a big stash leftover from last winter. Actually they weren’t whispers but loud squirrel chatter that was impossible to ignore. Those rodents sometimes talked nonstop, he wondered how they had time to breathe!

With one final scan of the leaf-strewn ground for danger, Dart dove down and began to search for the cache. He aimed for a spot far away from those raccoons who were sure to eat a little bird like him for breakfast. Fortunately. some of the leaves were as big as he was and his orange belly helped him blend in so he would hopefully go unnoticed.

Tenebrous Sciurida

He shivered and popped his neck to the side. A loud, gut churning crunch radiated out from him. His bones were stiff from lack of movement, being dead would do that. He came to life though, as he felt a chill breeze scrap over his flesh. The winter months would be upon him soon and there were preparations to be made. The large grey and black furred squirrel moved away from the shadow of the willow, its branches reaching out for him in search of tender embrace. The thing inside the squirrel, the force of existence providing locomotion and purpose, smiled. The willows had been the first thing he had corrupted since he’d been here, and they were his most powerful allies. He chittered; a sound as hollow as his insides. A crow cawed above him and raised himself up on his hindlegs. Since the squirrel had died, he had found ways to lengthen and extend the body, making it larger and longer than a squirrel ought to be. He sniffed the cold air. It was time to begin a collection of nuts for the winter. He did not need them of course, but it was expected of the squirrels to do so, and even though the body that carried him was long dead, it still needed upkeep and nourishment. With the speed and agility of a serpent, the squirrel was off, darting through the underbrush with hideous purpose. He moved through the shadows and felt them embrace him, welcome him like an old companion. He had done well here. His corruptive influence was spreading more and more each day. When he had first arrived, the shadows had not welcomed him, indeed they had tried to expel him. But his will was stronger and soon he was the master. Now they begged for his attentions, his touch. He chittered again, laughing greedily as he slipped in and out of them.

Soon enough, he came to a clearing, a new place free of his influence. The smell of arboreal decay was heavy on the air. Reds and oranges and browns littered the ground, the autumnal reaper had done his fine work here. The leaves crunched beneath his paws, a satisfying sound that presented itself in him in the form of a dæmonical smile.

So the Hunt began.

Skwovet the Skwirrel

Flick! A long, bushy tail whipped around the trunk of a tree. With a light skittering of claws, Skwovet made her way into the tree’s upper branches. The smells of pine and rotting leaves and damp dirt rose all around her. But where were the nutty smells? Surely, the supply had not been depleted at this early a date.

She paused, ears perked for sounds of intruders on her search. If anyone dared cross her path, she’d leap at their face with teeth and claws ready...!

Skovet pushed aside a few dead leaves and poked her head into a hole in the trunk, nose twitching curiously all the while. Perhaps a neighboring critter had stashed the good stuff in here. She wasn’t above thieving, after all.

Fwirl was a very pretty squirrel, with sleek, luscious, shiny black fur. She had eaten many acorns over the last season, which were very good for the shine of her fur, apart from being very tasty. But now, it was time to pack away a store of food for winter! Last winter's store had mysteriously vanished form where Fwirl had hidden it, leading to a lean spring, but she had used her charm to persuade a handsome red squirrel to share his with her. She was hopeful in her search for a new winter store she might find last year's- a double store would be even better!! Fwirl's nose twitched excitedly as she rooted about among the leaves that scattered the ground, searching for nuts and seeds that might be hiding beneath them. Her sharp black claws scratched the ground, for sometimes nuts became lodged in the earth itself, and only the wiliest of squirrels could find them. She worked industriously, skittering from one patch to another, on the trail of her winter's store!

Three Raccoons....not in a coat

Bark and burlap. Not a nut to be found. Hob caught sight of some other creatures having luck and debated on stealing from them, unfortunately they all seemed to be a good bit quicker than the three brothers could possibly hope to be. And smaller so at best, Hob thought, they might be able to use a sapling to catapult them out of the area where the nuts were suppose to be. Something told him thought hat there were trees watching at that that would be a good idea. He stopped Bob who had a very similar idea t him and was looking at launching a nuthatch similarly (not quite as useful being a bird and it could just fly away so launching it wouldn't get rid of it for long). Pointing at trees that seemed to be watching as it were.

The two wiser brothers decided they would have to do this the hard way and legitimately search for these nuts. However that didn't mean that they couldn't get a laugh at Reginald if he was off trying to be a nit wit. On that note the Bob and Hob dragged their idiot brother to a new location to begin searching there.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

Mister Black had hit the jackpot (finding four nuts under an old Willow tree). But caution was need. Obviously the nuts were put there but another. And if the vermin and creatures of Fangorn were anything like the black, backstabbing, thieving lot from Mirkwood, he would have to be on his guard. Stuffing his cheeks (two nuts per side) he scuttled up the Willow.
Near to the middle of the tree, he stopped for a rest. He placed the nuts in a small recess between two branches, then looked the Willow up and down. Pulling a piece of loose bark he began to nibble at it - it was bitter but not intensely so- his eyes darting about. The forest was alive, but nothing nearby for him to be alarmed about - yet. With his cheeks stuffed again, he made his way further up the Willow. To his delight he came upon a know hole. An empty knot hole it appeared to be if his nose knew anything. Standing tall on his back legs, he twitched his tail, then suddenly disappeared into the hole.

A short time later (his nuts and bark stashed in his new tree den), and having scent-marked his new abode, Mister Black was ready to explore and forage. After all, winter was just one snow fall away. With a twitch of his tail, he made his way across the Willow's branch, jumped to a nearby tree, and ran down to the forest below.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

Mister Black had a mouthful, no doubt. He was so excited by the abundance of food to be found, that he had no time to worry about who was closing in on his new territory. Running up and down the Willow, he stuffed the nuts in is hole, then stood on his hind legs and aggressively called a few sharp ' quaas', more so to alarm any other squirrels than to call a predetor warning. His eyes darted about, and down the tree limb he went, eager to fill his hole.

Tenebrous Sciurida

Leaves?! Leaves?! The squirrel seethed with rage, the tiny body quivering. It was not that he cared over much about finding the most nuts, it was not even about maintaining the appearance that he was alive, it was the humiliation of finding nothing but leaves that galled him so. In a fit, he scrambled about shredding all the leaves he could touch with his paws and jaws. The sounds that came from the squirrel’s dead body were decidedly not squirrel like. The forest floor undulated like the twitching body of a dying animal. Finally, he emerged, having exhausted his rage on the unsuspecting leaves. His mouth, when he opened it wide enough, was full of willow branches seeking to gain purchase in this new area and infest the ground.

An old memory, one from long before he was who he was now came into his mind, fracturus and fragmentary. This body had hidden a cache of nuts in this vicinity some time ago, before he found it and turned it to his purposes. What sort of power or nourishment could he find within that cache? He sniffed the air, a useless and perfunctory action, born out of muscle memory rather than practicality. The squirrel no longer possessed an olfactory system that functioned. Perhaps, though, going through such ritualistic motions would help lead him to the nuts the remnants of consciousness this body so craved.

Skwovet the Skwirrel

She had pushed aside some leaves only to find... more leaves. How was she supposed to survive the winter on mere LEAVES??

Skwovet chittered fussily as she shredded the leaves in bitter spite.

Up or down the tree? She mused as the remains of the leaves fell to the ground. Or perhaps to a new tree entirely? No, no, that would be rash. She’d try again in this tree before moving along.

Down she scampered, fluffy tail and nose twitching madly.

Square the Squirrel

Her claws scrabbled deeper and deeper in the ground until CLUNK - they hit something hard. Victory was hers!! She pulled 3 nuts from the ground. They were all pretty spherical, so not really her favourite types of nut, but it was more than the three creatures next to her had uncovered, which gave her a great sense of vindication. She gathered them up in one paw, but after some fruitless attempts to balance all three at once, she decided rolling was the order of the day, and rolled two of them ahead of her (for one was already a small selection of crumbs on the ground).

Onwards and upwards! Deciding the spot was clearly a good one, she moved across to the very next-door area and, after first standing back on her two hind legs to showcase with a smug grin to the other less fortunate creatures around her her little stash, she began digging.

Square the Squirrel

Dagnabbit! Not a single nut, acorn, or tasty morsel of any sort was to be found. It was quite apparent her chosen spot was well and truly barren. Square was a hopeless loser, and proud to a fault. She didn't want any of the other, now rather substantial crowd of creatures, to notice she hadn't found anything... her large beady black eyes did a quick scout of the others, to check no one was watching her, and then: "YES!" she squeaked with feigned ecstasy, holding aloft one of the nuts she had already foraged previously, pretending it was a new find and that she had in fact maintained her 100% record at finding food. Feeling pleased that she would undoubtedly have fooled the others into recognising her superior food-finding skills, she smarmily swaggered off to pastures new.

Square could see that there there was quite an area of untouched ground between where some of the others were searching. At least no one else appeared to have found anything of note recently either, she thought, continuing to internally console herself for the recent disappointment, which she of course was keeping carefully discreet. Indeed, one rather strange looking squirrel had just uncovered some twigs, much to Square's amusement. Oh to mistake twigs for nuts, what an embarrassment.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

Having found such an abundance of food in the forest, Mister Black had gone completely squirrelly and in his excitement, accidentally dashed right out of the forest into a sunlit verdant grassland. Coming to an abrupt halt he stood on hind legs and gazed about with his big wide eyes, then with a bark of alarm, turned and skittered back into the forest. There were large birds to be wary of and Mister Black was not ready to become someone else's meal when he had just found the 'Utopia of Nuts'. And nuts were only the beginning, he thought as he sped hastily back under the eaves of the trees, becoming excited once more. There were seeds and bark, berries and acorns; insects, moths, small amphibians, bird eggs, and young hatchlings! He was in such an ecstatic state thinking of the variety of food to be had, that he ran past his Willow without a glance. He was on a mission to fill his tree den and nothing else.

Skwovet the Skwirrel

Ack! Alas! Skwovet found only more leaves lower down in the tree. She whipped her tail about angrily. Would the nuts’ defenses fall at the sight of her rapidly flailing fluff? Would they surrender themselves to her ferocious appetite and hoarding instincts?? Only time would tell!

Down to the ground she went. She’d shake her rear end to no end to coax those nuts of out of hiding! Twitch! Flick! The sight was enough to make two nearby sparrows tumble about in the air, mid-flight, with laughter.

“Oh don’t you mind me!” Skwovet called. “Be on your merry way!” (Really she was just saying her own name over and over again, but the intention was clear.)

With that, she plunged headfirst into a pile of leaves, hoping to find buried treasure.

Three Raccoons...not in a coat

SUCCESS! There was many happy chattering noises from three brothers as they found three nuts and they scampered on their way to try to find more their little tails bouncing behind them as they rampaged through the forest tossing leaves about as only raccoons (and quite more likely badgers) could do. Fortunately so far they were the most apex predator in the forest, so if some squirrel or bird came to close they could possibly eat them as well. After all one little nut each was hardly enough for a raccoon.

Reginald was eyeballing a squirrel that was relatively nearby looking rather tasty with their back turned towards the three brothers for now though he was content to follow Bob and Hob in their scavenging for nuts.

Sticks? Sticks?! The body of the squirrel shook and quivered with rage. This was embarrassing. There were other critters about, critters he’d rather eat than share a space with, and they all seemed to be having better luck, other than that one covered in ants now. The squirrel giggled. The sound that came out of the body was not a giggle though, it was more the sound of gurgling water, the last plopping bubbles of a dying animal. He stared at the sticks. The bones of the body were beginning to rot and give way, it be practical to reinforce them, wouldn’t it? A smile passed over the squirrel’s mouth as the dead thing began picking up sticks, measuring them, and breaking them. Without a second thought, he ripped his side open and began jamming the sticks in places where he thought he could use more structure. After a few minutes of this, he felt stronger, fuller, and more than ready to find the nuts. He was still at a loss as to what he’d do with them. Curse them? Feed them to unsuspecting rodents so that they become susceptible for his influence? Allow them to grow into monstrous trees that will drain the life and spirit of the land? There were so many options here.

Three Raccoons...not in a Coat

They'd found a nut. A single nut. War raged for a moment with the three brothers absolutely beating the ever living daylights out of each other until Bob and Hob who were mostly fighting with Reginald noticed something about the squirrel he'd been debating on eating not that far away... the sudden stop in the fight from Reginald the Third of course made Bob and Hob stop and follow his slack jawed gaze.... which was a rather odd slack jawed gaze because he was pinned upside down half in leaf litter so it was just a gaze really...

At a squirrel literally stuffing its self with twigs... and not its mouth the twigs were going into its SIDE. The three brothers forgot about fighting for the nut, Hob sensibly putting it in some magical raccoon pocket that nobody was sure where it actually went to or how one found such a pocket on a raccoon but that's where the nut went, for safe keeping and the three brothers trotted straight towards where the squirrel was and stopped when it moved, afraid it had seen them and they began rooting around as if they weren't actually trying to catch and find out what the strange squirrel actually was.

Hooray!! Nuts!!! Fwirl hadn't fond a hoard yet, but a couple of nuts was a good place to start. Fwirl squirreled (hah!) them away, and continued on her search. There seemed to be a lot of other squirrels around who had the same idea, she'd better hurry up and find that store. It was around here somewhere, she was sure! A nearby squirrel(?) was doing something very odd with sticks and.. oh.. oh.. oh no!!! Fwirl screamed and scampered away, as far away as she could get, hoping that she might find some sweet nuts to make her feel better after seeing that.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

With a nut (yes 1 nut) in his left cheek, Mister Black made his way back to his Willow. He had smelt something unpleasant whilst searching for food. It smelt like a rat - and rats were not one of Mister Black's BF's. Besides, he was kind of pooped, having been on an adrenaline rush since he first arrived. He would catch a few winks in his tree den (nibble a bit of bark, lick some sap) then start foraging again. Scuttling up to the Willow, he decided to try his luck on more time just beside the trunk of the tree. Soon debris was a flying and Mister Black was a digging.

Skwovet the Skwirrel

“Skwoooovet? Skwovet skwo?” (tr: “Why can’t I find any nuts? What’s wrong with this tree?”) came the muffled queries from the pile of leaves. This was Skwovet’s third attempt at finding some munchable, crunchable nuts and she’d come up with empty paws.

She popped her head up and out of the leaf pile into which she’d jumped. Itch. Itchitch. ItchitchITCH! She craned her neck in panic, trying to find the source of the irritation she was feeling on her back, her legs, her paws.... In her discomfort and flailing, she failed to notice the creepier goings-on in the woods, which was a blessing as she’d probably have immediately gone to dive off the nearest cliff had she observed what was happening with those sticks.

“SKWOOOOO!” (tr: “Ouch! ANTS!!!”) she shrieked, eyes bulging with panic.

She thrashed about in her pile of leaves, with a great swishing and swooshing of the brittle things. She leapt up and did several body slams into the forest floor, inwardly begging the impact to smash the ants and free her from this misery.

Somewhat bruised and out of breath but thankfully released from the clutches of the ants, Skwovet crawled on her belly over to a new spot. Maybe she’d find a snack here?

Square the Squirrel

She simply couldn't believe her bad luck. This was so very unlike her. Leaves, leaves, and more blasted leaves. In her frustration Square darted to the nearest tree and started climbing effortlessly up. She went higher and higher until she reached the most fragile branches at the canopy, where she sat on the edge of a particularly bouncy branch, in a bit of a huff. She had half a mind to give up entirely, this was clearly a silly spot for food searching. She still couldn't understand why there was so many weird creatures all in the same space when they had the whole forest at their beck and call.

Still, pride won through, and Square couldn't face the shame of giving up early. She leapt across to another nearby tree, and scuttled back down the trunk, right to the very edge of the clearing.

Oh rotten acorns!! She'd now forgotten what she'd done with the first nuts she'd found. Why hadn't she just eaten them all from the start? Well, no time like the present to get searching for more, such sat on the ground and started rummaging through the earth.

Dart the Nuthatch

What. was. that. It was not a nut or seed or an acorn. It was not a spider or a caterpillar or an ant. In all of Dart's months of life, he had never seen nor heard of nor tasted a truffle (and would not know its name). He tipped forward poked his beak into the lumpy brown thing. Hm. Tasty. He didn't drop dead right away...so maybe it was edible?

Dart felt a pair of hungry raccoon eyes on him and his feathers puffed up. "Beep beep beep!" he cried jumping up and down to defend his newfound food - you don't scare me! (It seemed the raccoons' attention had already wandered to something else and his effort was wasted.)

With that, he plucked the truffles up in his beak and - zip - like a dart - he was off into a tree, tucking the lumps away in a nook.

There were so many scurrying squirrels scattered about the forest now (plus the raccoons and the strange furry-tree-thing??), Dart almost gave up. But he had mates to think about! And spring! He fluttered back down in search of nuts...

Three Raccoons... not in a coat looking at a... purse????

The three brothers were mostly busy searching the area they were in for nuts, but Reginald the Third, the least bright of the trio despite his slightly more regal name was drawn inexplicably towards the area where the strange stick monster had gone. Infact he was well on his way to check out what the creature actually was, and debated on trying to use it as a fashionable purse in which to hold the acorns and other foodlike items they found in it. After all... It did seem to have an opening where one could stuff twigs in it surely it could fit acorns as well.

Hob and Bob noticed by about the time Reginald was about five feet from the strange creature and gave small raccoon gasps, which compared to tiny nuthatch or squirrel gasps were fairly loud. They looked at each other and then at the strange creature and decided they could probably survive just fine with the two of them though he had done that really cool thing with the crow in the Shire... Nope they decided they were not helping Reginald out with this one. Mother could be furious at them for it they did not care. He was on his own.

Reginald being ever aloof of danger marched right up to the 'stick squirrel' and looked at it his big masked face right beside the 'squirrels' body in an attempt to figure how much food the new purse could possibly hold. Squirrels were stretchy after all right? Or was that chipmunks? He didn't know.

Round 5

B6: Tenebrous: you have found, not a nut, but a spiky caterpillar. He is worth no nuts, but I guess you may attempt to eat him anyway. Watch out for the spikes.

A4: 3 Raccoons have disturbed the hiding spot of a bird. It’s a big bird. It’s a big, angry, pecky bird. What do you do?

J8: Fwirl finds only leaves! She can fan herself with them since this is all becoming a Bit Much.

A7: Mr Black finds a MYSTERIOUS BERRY. Will he eat it? What if it’s poisoned? It’s possibly hallucinogenic. Hmm choices, choices

I7: Skwovet hahahahhaha leaves. It’s like you’re cursed

D8: Square finds a single nut!

J6: Dart finds... a discarded sandwich! It’s not a nut. But it is worth three nuts in nut currency!

Three... well Two Raccoons not in a Coat dealing with a bird.... the third looking at a purse.

Hob and Bob clung to each other in shock as an very large angry bird came barreling down at them in an attempt to harm them. This was a Reginald problem they had discovered and the two darted about out of the way of the very sharp very pecky beak. They scampered and darted about until they'd made it out of the birds area, at least they assumed it was out of the birds territory.

They were very very wrong the foul beast followed them quite intent on having a go at cracking their skulls only to find itself eventually stuck beak first in an only semi rotten log. Hob and Bob for their part breathed a sigh of relief and then a devious plan entered their little raccoon brains and soon the very large angry bird was a defeathered large and angry bird while the two brothers tried to figure out if they could light a fire under it's belly without setting the whole forest on fire. To do that they figured they would need to clear the leaf litter, and while they were at it maybe look for some nuts or things to season this angry bird....

Reginald for his part was staring transfixed completely oblivious to the plight of his brothers as the purse squirrel @Fleeg found a caterpillar. It's spikes didn't look too harmful to the raccoon, but his mouth was much bigger and he wanted to see how dangerous this thing was after all if he was going to use it as a purse he wanted to know how likely it was to bite him. So he sat face right in the squirrels with a big dopey smile on his face showing a set of rather sharp raccoon teeth just slightly as he waited.

A6 please to finish up that row!

Tenebrous Sciurida

The squirrel with the lovely black coat ran away, squeaking something unintelligible. The dead one looked at it curiously, tilting his head to one side, going further and further until there was a cracking sound echoing from inside him. Whether it was from the bones in the body’s neck or the new twigs being absorbed into his ever changing, ever improving form could not be determined. The neck was now bent at an angle that forced the head nearly completely upside down. He smiled. It was a horrid smile with teeth that looked… soft. He was about to scuttle over and look at this black furred wonder further, to see if it’s fur would look nice enough to cover his own when something came up to him. A raccoon! The vile, plebian creature! The dead squirrel opened his mouth the scream but instead of a scream, the sound of a rusted gate hinge echoed through the forest. His pale yellow eyes turned to look at the intruder, this interloper, this mongrel being. He had not had meat in quite a long time. Out of the corner of one eye, he saw a caterpillar crawling along the forest floor, trying to hide amidst the leaves. Nothing would hide from him though. Without breaking eye contact with raccoon, he snatched up the crawlie, shoved it in his mouth, (spines and all) and crunched down. The gore from the bug dripped down his mouth as he moved closer to raccoon until he was almost touch.

I know how you’re going to waste,” a voice from both within and without the squirrel said. “It’s written in the hidden sides of your face.”

Leave leaves leaves, only leaves! Fwirl was so upset after seeing the monstrosity of the undead squirrel that she had been unable to find a single nut, only scurrying about amongst the leaves and hiding herself in their deep piles as she searched. There was a bird nearby that looked much, much more friendly, but Fwirl wasn't quite back in the making friends sort of mood yet. But, she wasn't about to let the nuthatch find her nuts, and so she poked her nose out from her leaf pile, nose and whiskers twitching, and slowly crawled her way towards the bird, determined to find the nuts before he did.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

Mister Black stared at the mysterious berry in his paws. He was inclined to nibble at it, but at the same time, he had never seen a berry this shape, color, or scent before which made him hesitate. Not that he was to worry about it. 'Most food was not in his system long enough to make a difference - poot poot - and the trace amounts of poison found in acorns, mushrooms and other problematic natural foods do not bother squirrels.' But it was such a pretty color all orange and blue, he thought maybe it would look nice in a nook in his tree den. Just to satisfy his curiosity, he gave it a lick, then shoved it into the nook. It would be a nice contrast to all the white that would soon cover the land. And maybe there was more? He could have his whole den filled with the berries!

Scooting down the Willow, Mister Black began to dig around the tree in wild excitement. He had never been so happy.

Square the Squirrel

She scrabbled a bit deeper than she usually would have done, and certainly far deeper than any of her own nuts would ever have been hidden. And suddenly she felt it, the giddy feeling of something hard, wedged into the soft earth. She cleared the spot of mud and grubs, and pulled the nut loose. It was just one, but it was worth ten nuts for all Square cared, for the nut wasn't round, but had edges, lots of knobbly edges, and as a whole it looked distinctly... well, square!! Squeaking with delight, for Square loved the odd nuts, the ones which weren't boring and round and spherical, but odd and sharp and jagged with edges and corners.

Although she'd have like to continued admiring it for some time, or would have happily reburied it to have the pleasure of unearthing again later, Square knew that a nut buried was a nut she risked losing. So with a giant crunch, she popped it in her mouth whole, and whilst still munching, crumbs spraying everywhere, she bounded across to the next ripe-looking spot.

Skwovet the Skwirrel

“Skwoh....”

Dejected, disillusioned, and totally bummed out, Skwovet looked at the latest pile of leaves with an empty gaze.

Tears welled in her eyes and a single tear ran down her furry cheek. She sighed and slowly crawled, wincing from her earlier bruising, to a corner of the woods. Perhaps a little rest would help her in this quest...

Dart the Nuthatch
Why was the forest full of such strange food?! This nuthatch just wanted some nuts! It was in his name. He was a nuthatch. Not a trufflehatch or a sandwich-hatch. A NUTHATCH! "Brrrzt!" Dart exclaimed in irritation. He pecked at the sandwich: the bread was soggy and there were green blobs of mold all along the crust.

With nimble and delicate peck-peck-pecks of his beak, Dart removed the moldy crust and left it in the leaf litter. A squirrel (Fwirl) came along and seemed to eye his find with hungry, greedy jealousy. Even when they had enough to eat, squirrels never stopped looking did they?

In an effort to keep his find for himself, he tried to scoop it up in his little beak and carry it off. Unfortunately, the sandwich was bigger than him and it took everything he had to lift off with it. As he fought to flap his little wings, a mayonnaise-smeared tomato slice fell from the sky followed by one, then two, then three onions. By the time he found a place to stash it, it was mostly just bread.

After he rustled and stretched his wings and had a wee rest, Dart climbed down the tree bark and scurried in search of ... nuts, let's hope!

Square the Squirrel

"YEOOOOOWW!" Square shrieked and jumped into the air in alarm. For her digging had unveiled not nuts, but a living, breathing thing. "What," she gasped, now quite irate, "in the name of the grandest horse chestnut around, are you DOING?!" Square demanded of the creature, who seemed utterly delighted with himself, which infuriated her more.

"I quite like you," he said, bizarrely, with a pathetic grin and then a quick scratch of his ears. "Well that's very nice, but I don't like you, and you are getting in the way of my hunt for nuts," she retorted sharply, trying to continue digging around him.

There was a moment of awkwardness where the male squirrel appeared unsure of how to proceed, but he shortly began sidling across the ground towards her with a slightly gooey look in his eyes. Square looked up from her activities and rolled her eyes dramatically. "I'm not interested, sorry," she said in as firm a manner as she could muster, and she deliberately turned her nose away from this strange squirrel. But he was having none of it, he leapt towards her, and began trying to nuzzle into her face.

"Eww, gerroff me! Stop being gross!" she demanded, batting his face away in disgust. He remained unabashed, and as she bounded in the opposite direction, he leapt too, just a split second behind her. Best to ignore him, she decided, and she resumed foraging in the ground. He was at least refraining from more unwarranted physical contact. It was, however, a little unnerving having someone watching her every move (and, rudely, he didn't even appear interested in helping her dig for food!).

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

Mister Black dug up an anthill. And man, the ants were not to happy. They ran about trying to act tough. But this, ants in an agitated state, was the perfect time for an Anting. What is an Anting you ask? Well, 'birds and other mammals (squirrels), are known to lie in an area of high density of the insects (ants) and perform dust bathing-like movements. The ants secrete liquids containing chemicals such as formic acid, which can act as an insecticide, miticide, fungicide, or bactericide.' :googly:
Mister Black was soon rolling about on the ant hill and ants. He rubbed his face on the ants, his back, and the top of his head. It was almost like a message and the black squirrel from Mirkwood sure needed some relaxation. He had spent his first day in the new forest in a wild and happy frenzy and now was a perfect time to wind down.
He rolled about for a time, snatching up acid-less ants here and there and eating them, then he got bored and decided to go in search of food once more. Scuttling around the tree, he took off in a new direction, feeling lucky!

Skwovet

Dreams of a hefty stockpile of provisions all but dashed into the ground, Skwovet contemplated her situation thus far.

Leaves. Ants. Leaves. Leaves again.

Where were the flipping nuts???

Maybe if she went into an early hibernation, her metabolism would simply tough it out while she slept. She wasn’t quite sure of the science.

Deciding to find a likely tree hole in which to slumber away the pain, Skwovet made her way slowly but with some grace up a new tree. She peeked her head into a knot about two thirds of the way up the trunk, checking for resident angry owls.

It was devoid of live critters. Perhaps she’d just cover herself in some of those leaves she’d found and go to sleep...

More leaves. Damn the autumnal reaper! Why must his scythe fall so readily that all he could find in this clearing were leaves and a single caterpillar? He brooded. It was not that he needed these Yavanna cursed nuts, of course not. He needed nothing to survive. He was dead after all. No, he was death. He needed them to spread his message of stagnation, his gospel of starvation, his doctrine of desolation. He looked to the raccoons, silly creatures so wound up in their curiosity, they were possibilities. He smiled, a horrid, wicked misshapen thing. The sleeping squirrel? She was desperate, and hungry. If he found a nut, he could use it to entice her to his side. The black squirrel? She was terrified of him. That brought an idea to his mind, a mind no longer formed of blood and flesh. Terror breeds the same kind of corruption he was looking for. He bounded, quick as a whirlwind, to her side, sitting just below her. Then he unleashed his tongue. The thing was long and red. In fact, it was longer and redder than it had any right to be. It was nearly three times as long as his body and, devoid of blood, the tongue should have been a pale white worm.

Three Raccoons not in a coat

For the time being Hob and Bob decided it would be too difficult to start a fire so they knocked the bird on the head with a rock and after much work had managed to pull it from the half rotten log. They also hadn't found any seasonings yet but honestly, if they didn't find more nuts soon they'd at least have some raw fowl to eat. They swiftly made sure it was dead by poking it in the eye and decided they should collect their brother before he got eaten by this strange creepy squirrel thing.

Reginald had frozen in place as strange grin stuck on his face as if he was trying to calculate how much room one needed to fit an acorn in a broken necked squirrel Reginald the Thirds strong suite was unfortunately not math so he was not so good at figuring out volume or anything of that sort. Bob and Hob grabbed him by his ears and dragged him along. Their brothers brain too far down the rabbit hole of impossible math (to him) to realize he was being dragged until the finally reached the next area that they were going to search. At which point he whined horribly before Bob and Hob gave him a swift boot to the butt, offered him a torn off bird wing (which he ate greedily) and began to search for the elusive El Darnuto.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

Mister Black was digging but no nuts did he find, only twigs. Twigs were good to sharpen one's teeth on and if they had any bark left on them they made good winter snacks but, they weren't nuts!! 'There had to be more in this forest than ants and twigs!' he thought to himself as he nibbled at some bark.
Sitting back on his hind legs, he began to clean his face with his paws. An Autumn wind blew the fallen leaves across the forest floor and the tall Willow creaked and swayed as the wind caressed it in passing. Mister Black suddenly felt the hairs on his neck rise in anticipation. There was a smell of Winter in the air. More foraging was needed for the long months ahead. It was time to move on. With a flick of his tail, and a few warning calls to let the forest creatures know he was coming , 'quaa quaa', he sprang forth heading deeper into forest.

One nut? Better than nothing, but not enough to keep the fur sleek and shiny through the winter. Fwirl was beginning to grow concerned, as other squirrels nearby were finding more nuts than she! At least she wasn't having to fend off the advances of an inappropriately amorous squirrel determined on disrupting her focus. She was just beginning to form a plan of what to do next when the terrifying squirrel bounded over to her! And he let fly with his tongue- right. at. her!! Fwirl screamed the loudest, longest, highest-pitched scream a squirrel could scream and from her wide open-mouth position she chomped down on Tenebrous's tongue with her sharp white teeth!! With a mighty bound, she leapt through the air, still latched onto the tongue, hoping to both teach the nasty squirrel a lesson, and find a better location for nuts!!!

Tevildo was not a squirrel. Tevildo refused to pretend to be a squirrel. But he had pointy ears, a long tail, and a definite interest in chasing squirrels. He was also fond of pecan pie, but he wasn't sure if this was the right type of forest for that and if it was, it would still require finding someone to bake the pie.

He crouched at the edge of the clearing and watched the proceedings quietly for long minutes. His tail swished back and forth, whispering across the leaves. One specimen with exceptionally poofy cheeks looked particularly promising. He watched it climb up a barren tree and his stomach gave a small rumble. It was a bit early for supper, but...

He pounced! and landed next to the chubby grey critter's tree. "Mrrrrrrrrrrreeeeew," he trilled with deceptive mildness. He dug his claws into the bark and stretched luxuriously. Oh, this was going to be a fun afternoon.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

Mister Black ran around simultaneously digging then standing on guard. He was in a new part of the forest that had a distinct foxy feel to it - and a red-headed fox was not one he wished to meet when digging about for nuts. Still, the only food to be had here was not under the forest leaves. With ears raised high, standing up under the clouded sky, Mister Black wiggled his nose in the air. And suddenly, just like that, the sun came out. It lit the forest with warming rays making the dead leaves appear like a colorful carpet on the forest floor. It gave the black squirrel hope that he would be in luck soon. Then his ears picked up a sound that sent shivers down his spine.
"Mrrrrrrrrrrreeeeew,"
Not sure what creature made such a sound (never having met or heard a feline in Mirkwood Forest), he knew the sound of a predator's voice if he knew anything. It was time to get back to his Willow and stay under cover for a time, away from the danger. With one last scrapping of leaves and dirt, his noise picking up no scent of nut, acorn or seed, he turned and hightailed it back to his tree den.
