Tree-Twisting Riddles

Incorrect! It is probably best categorized as a secondary or minor location, as far as the LotR is concerned.

The lower-case "blue" vs the capitalized "Red" and "Yellow" is really throwing me for a loop on this one...I'll guess Rhun the lands of the East?

@Mojo You got it!! Red and Yellow refers to the mountain ranges, and blue refers to the wizards who went into the east. I confess that that part may have been an accidental trick on my part- I debated over whether blue should be capitalized or not and went with not. Elves, dwarves, and men all originated in the east, some of its places like Cuiviénen have disappeared, and all of the natural features mentioned can be found in Rhûn- including the kine of Araw :smiley8:

Wow, that was a good riddle! My gut feeling was that "blue" referred to the Wizards and not the ocean, but that was a lucky guess on my part. Okay...

Once overlooked and forgotten
But needed all the same
Once acquired, always useful
I twist and turn
And some I burn
But to the Hobbit's quest still crucial

I'm going to guess Dora Baggins? She was the one who Bilbo gifted something that had to do with letter writing when he "disappeared."

Ok, I'll seize the opportunity! I feel like this one may be a little easy...

I'll jump in, probably made it too easy, but so it goes.

Elf or Man, who can say?
My story starts within a Lay.
Of a mighty lineage do I derive,
yet Feanor's oath I cannot survive.

That was a lucky guess.....but I'm glad I'm right.

Let's see......

Am I a kuduk?
Or perhaps a Banakil?
Both, perhaps, or neither....
Or something in-between.
I went out one fine day
And ended up as the first
In a line of Holbyta heroes.

Just kind of throwing this out there, since I feel like I only half understand the riddle, but Bucca of the Marish, first Thain of the Shire?

Might it be Isumbras I, first Thain of the Shire from the Took family (and, best I can tell, the first known Took).

Given the last hint, I'm going to go with Deagol who found the One Ring in the river and was the first in the line of Hobbits (or Hobbit-like folk) who held the Ring.

You’re right @Mojo . They were sorta kinda Hoppits, but not quite. And he did start the chain of events that led to Saurons defeat.

Okay, riddle time....

It's said that sticks and stones
Can break ones bones
And I have seen this true.
For once I flew
Into a den
Of something made for stew

Is this referring to Glamdring? I think I might be mis-reading the last line but it certainly would have seen bones broken as a sword, and it was put in a den.

A good guess, but not what I was thinking of...I believe you are mis-reading the last line.

Ah cool! My riddle-making skills are a bit rusty but here goes:

Made by the tall
Used by the small
Part of a king’s dealing
Delayed a returning

I keep getting stuck on Elendil the Tall but I dont think anything of his was used by the Hobbits.

Was it the White Tree of Gondor?

Is it Sting?

I'm in two minds about whether the answer is a collection of things/collective noun or a single item.

Further west... and where I’ve said ‘delayed’, I mean by like minutes or hours rather than weeks, months, years.

I do love all your guesses though

It isn't Pipe-weed, is it?

(and before anyone calls me crazy--though I think the guess probably is--

Made by the tall -- the origins of Pipe-weed may actually be found among Men, as noted in the Fellowship forwards.
Used by the small -- Old Toby and Co.
Part of a king’s dealing -- Aragorn was known to enjoy it, I suppose? Or alternatively, Theoden was controlled by Saruman, who had a fondness for it, although that's a reach even for this reach.
Delayed a returning -- in that they sat and smoked a bit at the Flooding of Isengard, iirc? Or, Merry and Pippin did anyway.

So maybe our beloved Halfling leaf?)
