Three Raccoons

Success they were once again tied with their tediously allied nut thief the willow Squirrel known as Tenebrous once again, and that black squirrel was lacking at least one of the nuts that they had once had. Hob had every intention of getting the other one back as well and went right back to work not even bothering to take the one nut in his hand back to Bob to protect it would be safe for now with him. Mostly because he couldn't eat him himself yet. They had to figure out why they couldn't eat the nuts. Perhaps if all of the animals worked together and found out the valar that was keeping them from eating the nuts they could kill them. Hob scratched his ear with the his back foot, somehow he felt that for the moment only their current ally would be up for such an endeavor. The rest seemed far too innocent for their own good. Though there was that one other squirrels that seemed a bit off as ell.

Bob for his part was working very hard at keeping their small stash safe though he was only guarding twenty one of the nuts in their horde not knowing that their brother had succeeded on stealing one of their lost nuts back from his failure against the black squirrel of Mirkwood. He held his bird bone shive in his mouth and worked on making it so that the nuts were a little bit harder to steal.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

"For Kuks sake!" Mister Black barked to himself. While he had been away attempting to serenade the zombie into maybe leaving his stash of nuts unguarded, the raccoons showed the true colors and stole one of his nuts. They didn't want to be his friend. They were low-down- bandits. Low-down like that randy badger from that terrible dream. And why weren't they hunkered down into their survival mode?? Why weren't they sleeping? It was winter after all.
Mister Black rubbed his paw across his face in a surprisingly human gesture of frustration. He would have to get his nut back. But there was three of them with six clever little hands that could probably pinch, slap and punch. He would have to sneak in real quiet like and hope they didn't detect him. That was what he was going to do and he hoped that luck was with him....

Dart the Nuthatch

Dart sure showed those raccoons!! With his nut pile successfully defended, Dart still had a Big Problem. How was he going to get back to normal nuthatch proportions?

Not only did he have to excavate a new home, he had to eat more food. Another problem. Flip, flap, flip, flap, he made his way to the buffet. Crunch and munch. Assorted seeds. Mmm. Maybe he could store some of these away, too... Beak full to the brim with seeds, he headed off to hide them.

He had forgotten his new size (bird brain). When he landed on a branch, the twig snapped--CRACK!--and Dart fell beak forward toward the ground, rolling over and over in an impressive but accidental dive that was Olympic Gold Medal-worthy (for a bird).

The forest swirled around him, leaves and sky, trees and nuts, and he thought he might lose his lunch. He flapped his wings with desperation knowing he'd make someone a good meal if he didn't and managed to lighten his landing though he tumbled beak over claws at the end. Back on the forest floor again... maybe there were some nuts around?

Tenebrous, the Corruption – 22 Nuts
Perfect! Excellent! Brilliant!

His plan to do absolutely nothing had come to perfect fruition! Not only had he not lost any nuts (maybe a few marbles but that was not really for him to judge) but he was back in the lead! “Mwhahahahahaha!” He hadn’t actually spoken since his nap, so the sound of his voice was scratchy, gurgly, and full of willow branches. How can someone’s voice be full of willow branches? Don’t ask question! This is serious stuff here; we don’t have time your questions about logic and sensory deception. The point is that Tenebrous’ brilliant plan, the one he’d definitely thought of and hadn’t just sat around waiting for something to happen, was to allow his enemies to show their hands first and naturally make a misstep. Yes. Yes, that is what happened. No, it was not mere happenstance. If you’re going to be negative and contrarian you are going to have to leave the forest and go sit in a pond. You’ve gotten me off track now. Great. Where was I? Something about nuts and dead squirrels, oh right! Tenebrous had managed to regain the lead by allowing his enemies to fight amongst themselves and get their own nuts stolen. This was a brilliant strategy. So brilliant that it was making him hungry. There were no willow branches around so he was going to have to feast on nuts. Not his nuts of course, only a fool eats their own nuts. Stop laughing. This is not a laughing matter, if you can’t take this seriously you are going to be escorted out by security. Alright, fine. Anyone else want to join him? No? Then everybody better shut up and listen. He was hungry, only nuts could satisfy his craving (okay I’m hearing it now but what do you want me to do about it?). Whose pile was closer to his? The geography of this place hadn’t been settled so it was likely that they were all the closest to him and the furthest from him. Physics is a quandary. That’s all I have to say about that subject. Why don’t I just draw a map? Why don’t you just stick that eraser in your nose. I’m the one talking, not you. Okay. As it turned out, in that very moment, the closest pile of nuts was that of Skwovet, who had been growing more and more evil by the moment. She was also getting larger but that’s really immaterial to this part of the story. I’m sure if you wanted to know her side of the story you could ask her. She might end up saying something like “Skwo? Skwooooovet! Skwovet!” and eat you so I might just stick with the dead, possessed squirrel if I were you. Mmmmmhmm. Tenebrous, you see, was the one responsibly for her descent into evil (or is it an ascent, I don’t know this isn’t a philosophy class). He would be safe from her chaotic machinations. He hoped. One could never be to sure. He was hungry though, and he was in no mood to have to climb down a tree and through an upside down cactus to get to Fwirl. Oh, how were the willow cookies everyone? Did you enjoy them? Good. Good….

Three Raccoons.

Bob failed. Yet. Again. And Hob was furious and Reginald had burrowed his way under the oak trees roots and was throwing clumps of mud about and was literally utterly useless towards the task of getting or maintaining the stash of acorns. Bob was very upset at his failure and was debating on commit seppuku via chicken bone for his utter failure but then there would be nobody at all to guard the acorns while Hob was busy trying to steal acorns.

It was a lose lose situation really and so Bob sat head hung in shame holding his chicken bone knife looking rather forlorn and wishing he was back at the dwarven pub drinking ale instead of here failing horribly.

Hob for his part made his way to his brother and replaced one nut into the pile having failed he figured perhaps he should lighten the load he was carrying to help make himself a bit lighter. Now though he needed to rethink his strategy, they definitely needed more nuts. they were back down to 21...Who would be an easy target?

It didn't take him long and he decided that it would be a wise choice to go after this squirrel, after all they were the lowest nut count short of nut having any. So with that he scuttleed along and hoped beyond hope to do the impossible - something he hadn't done yet. 2 nuts in one snatch.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

He managed to get his nut back without being pinched, slapped or punched, but winter was still here and he needed to find food and stealing was the only way to go about getting it at this point and he had to, blah blah blah blah blah.. "Holy Mirkwood!", he thought. This seemed to be the longest winter Mister Black could remember having lived through with all the thieving and shivering and plotting. When would it end?
Looking out his den hole at the whiteness that surrounded his world, his frosty breath circling his head, he saw the zombie and the three raccoons heading out he assumed on another raiding mission. He was becoming quite familiar with their dens having raided them not so long ago. They had lots of food stored away. The question was, which of their dens would he test his luck on this time. Pointing his little paw first left then right he chanted (in squirrel speak):
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe,
Catch a critter by the toe.
If he hollers, let him go,
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

No luck over at Coonsville, so he decided to head the other way and try once more over in zombie land. He was tired of singing to the pale creature and seriously, there was nothing beautiful about him anyway. Did he have fur? Mister Black had not been close enough to notice and didn't want to be. But he knew that there was a large hoard of nuts in that creature's camp and he surely could spare a few. He wondered if the rodent even ate? He was become less frighten of him. What was he going to do to him if he got caught, delve into his brain and take over his psyche or some such thing?

With a brave kuk, the black squirrel went into stealth mode and crept towards the creatures stash. He wasn't afraid so much anymore, but he was still careful.

Three Raccoons

If ever there was a look of utter amazement on the face of Hob the raccoon it was today. When he had managed to steal not one... but 2 nuts from a stash at the same time. It put them back in the lead of nut horders. He scuttled back to Bob who also was utterly amazed that he brought not one but two nuts and it lifted his spirits a little. Both of them peaked towards the tree that Reginald had buried himself under it was snoring now. Quite loudly which was fairly hilarious really. Especially since there was an ent tromping around though they weren't terribly active for the moment.

They needed more nuts still. well wanted really. Need wasn't the right word for raccoons they didn't hibernate they just kept on going on digging and eating and terrorizing squirrels wherever they could. For now it meant that Hob was on his way to try his luck getting another nut from the squirrel that was so distracted he managed to get two nuts from them last time. This time he was going to only try for one. No need to push his luck too hard Hob figured.

Tenebrous, the Corruption – 22 Nuts

His sanity was beginning to shred itself. When his “do nothing and win” strategy inevitably failed, Tenebrous fell into a twitching fit. The squirrel’s tiny body convulsed and spasmed uncontrollably for a good thirty seconds. The sounds of shuffling leaves and breaking branches, however was the only thing that could be heard. He slumped over, exhausted, angry, and broken. His body, filled with branches, leaves, and a few nuts, had managed to shape itself in such a way that the grey, dead fur that covered his strange willow tree infestation began to tear and rip. His paws were now facing outward and moved as though they had been turned upside down as well. Tenebrous’ head was twisted like an owl’s, having warped around so that he was staring completely backwards. He screamed. The dark powers that had given him unlife had punished his repeated failures and now he was to endure a broken humiliation. If he did not manage to shamble or scuttle over to someone and steal their nuts, he was going to be ripped asunder and his willow branches would be redistributed back into the world. He chittered and squeak pathetically, his vocal chords rent and savaged in his punishment. One yellowed eye had gone dark. He needed to find something soon or he was going to end up nothing more than a poorly constructed effigy. The black squirrel, the one that had sung to him earlier in an effort to distract him was away from his hoard. It was as good a place as any to start. And if the squirrel tried to take one of his nuts? Well, Tenebrous was still the Corruption was he not? He left his pyramid of nuts swarming with beetles to deter any would be thieves.

Tenebrous, the Corruption – 24 Nuts

He giggled. Corpses should not giggle. He was not completely turned into an oozy mess, but he was well on his way to becoming that. The powers had let him begin to rot, releasing the flood of time that they’d held back for so long. Willow branches, previously stored within the gateway had begun to poke out, piercing his stretched, decaying form. It was all falling apart. He was falling apart. Was there any point to continuing this game, this race to build a Tower of Babel out of acorns and nuts and seeds? Would any of the creatures gathered here even last the winter? Was any of this worth it? Tenebrous wanted to sit, or what might pass for sitting in the horridly broken state he was now in. He wanted to do nothing. There was no point in this. He couldn’t change his fate, no matter how many nuts he gathered, no matter how high his tiny tower climbed. His consciousness was a curse, a blight. It was a gift he never asked for, never wanted. What was the point? If he slaved away, tried to scratch out a meager existence, who was he benefitting? Was the eternal torture of knowing the consequence of something he’d done, some unspeakable horror he’d done to be visited upon by living? What terrible powers decided he must suffer with existence, that they all must suffer with existence. They were all players in a farce to an audience of one.

Sod it all! Tenebrous dove around aimlessly, looking to cause as much distraction and damage to all the little piles of nuts as he could, and if he happened to steal some from some other poor sap then so be it.

Three Raccoons

Well that hadn't worked like Hob had very much hoped it would. And now Bob was piling the nuts that he'd gathered to the burrow that Reginald had created and was still audibly still sleeping in. It looked like there tenuous alliance with the willow squirrel still was standing though he was. Well Hob sat and watched him for several minutes trying to figure out what he was in fact doing, his body was doing weird things and he wasn't so sure about if he'd hold out until it was a battle between the squirrel and the brothers. The brothers of course (at least Hob and Bob) were still very much hoping to unleash the creepy little rodent on the Valar who was keeping them from eating their nuts. But it was looking like that may not happen in the end at all which was quite disappointing.

After several minutes it appeared Tenebrous was back in action and Hob was a little less worried about their ally for the time being. He told Bob to keep an eyeball and a shiv out and he was off to find more nuts. Hopefully.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

Mister Black had came away unsuccessful. Having crept up to the pale creatures hideout, he suddenly felt interrupted by feelings of ungodliness, unrighteousness and wickedness; that traveled down his spine like a thousand legged centipede born in the ashes of the damn. It stopped him in his tracks. Firstly because it was a creepy feeling and secondly because, he was amazed at his own deep thoughts. Kuk!

Turning away, he scurried back to his willow and discovered that the corruption had invaded his own hideout. Not one, but two of his precious nuts were gone. What was a squirrel without his nuts? Feeling the centipede moving up and down his spine, he glared out at the unkind world. Despair turned an evil twist making his mouth form into sneer. He snuck down his willow....

Skwovet, Still Big

Skwovet hissed. Her nuts! Her precious nuts! Their hiding place had been befouled by thieves! Her eyes glinted red. She bared her little (well, big for now) teeth at Tenebrous and the raccoons. How dare they! She could understand raccoons being trash (they were trash pandas, after all), but Tenebrous?? She had felt an affinity, a closeness, a kindred coldness with that one. Until now. She hissed again, then uttered a battle cry. Her large feet thundered along, carrying her toward her target.

“Skwoooooh!!!!!!”

Well that was disappointing it was time to go back to the tried and true method of singular nut thieving Hob decided as they failed to take a nut from the slightly crazed looking little squirrle that was attacking Tenebrous. They were OKAY with this. All three of them. Well at least Hob and Bob, Reginald was still absolutely sound asleep and hadn't even looked like he was thinking of waking up any time soon. Probably for the best.

Hob decided the crazy little, correction BIG Squirrel should probably be left alone. Of course that meant that he would have to find another squirrel to thieve from but he had already decided on that. After all there were only so many creatures that he could steal from. With that he slipped quietly toward Squares stash hoping to take a nut or two from it.

Here I peek from my den
Into the snowy scene again
Who shall I raid?
What shall I do?
Qua qua I'm so blue

Kuk Kuk! no nuts have I
No seed, no acorn, no ber-ry
Woe n' Ohh says I
Woe n' Ohh I cry

Down my Willow I have slid
In and out of other's woods
Snooped and poked
Found a few
But not enough to get me through

Kuk Kuk! no nuts have I
No seed, no acorn, no ber-ry
Woe n' Ohh says I
Woe n' Ohh I cry

Dart the Nuthatch
As a small bird, Dart always thought life would be easier being Big. Alas, it was not! It did not help him gather more nuts nor defend his own. The smelly undead squirrel-thing filched two from his pile before Dart could try to spear Tenebrous with his beak. Not that he had the energy.

“Tu-weep, Tu-weeeeep,” he sang mournfully. Woe is me, he who is no longer King of Nuts.

Dart nestled himself deep within the leaf litter for a while, singing his sad song. He felt utterly alone (where oh where were all his flying friends in his flock?) and full of despair. If he could cry, he would have. Instead, he buried his beak deep in his feathers and tried to wish himself small.

To sulk was futile. The forest was full of fierce creatures. Dart wiggled out of his comfy leaf pile and scurried around in search of more food. He felt extra hungry ever since his growth spurt.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

The sun beat down on Mister Black's Willow den. He lay staring out as if in a trance. He was starting to think that he was spending to much time near that pale creature's (Tenebrous, the Corruption) abode. He felt like he was being turned inside out and all his common sense was hidden on the inside and his outsides, were just beating organs and flowing blood steaming in the hot old sun.

Suddenly (not for the first time and probably not the last) he slapped himself across the face several times trying to shake the spaced-out, zombie-like feelings he was having. This was not who he was!! He was a Mirkwood Elf just disguised as a squirrel. "No! Kuk! No!" He WAS a squirrel and proud of it.

Scared now, he dashed down his Willow and flung himself into the nearest snow drift. The cold snow shocked him into his senses. He scrambled out and sat back on his hind legs, chewing nervously on his thumbs. It seemed like he had been in a strange trance for sometime , like a sickness and now the fever had broke. The world appeared bright and white. It kind of hurt his big eyes and he shut them and sighed deeply.

Opening them, he looked around as if he hadn't been where he was in a long time. "To heck with nuts!" he thought to himself. The whole winter had been all about nuts and nuts and nuts. Which had actually driven him a bit nutty. He had enough stored away. It was almost Spring. Life would be coming back. He wouldn't have to steal anymore. Maybe that had been the problem all along. His guilt making him sick in the mind.

Having convinced himself that things would be alright, he went back to his tree den. He curled up in the colorful bark (kite) and soon fell asleep. He may of dreamed about thieving once more, but when he woke he did not remember a thing.

Three Raccoons

Hob was successful and quickly carried the prize nut back to the stash, only to come back out to see Bob looking... agast. Pale even for a raccoon. How a raccoon might look pale he was not entirely sure but his brother was looking so. It was only then that Hob heard the caw of a crow. And then another and another and he turned and looked at the murder that seemed to be arguing about something and then back to the snoring oak tree where his brother was sleeping and then to Bob that had done basically the exact same thing and then back at the snoring oak tree as the snores paused for a moment as if Reginald was about to wake up before they resumed the high raccoon having likely rolled over but they could not chance it no.

Both raccoons charged for the crows in fear, after seeing what Reginald had done to the crow that got too close in the Shire, they really did not want to witness what 'waking up from being high on mushrooms' Reginald would do to whatever crow he caught. It very likely would be incredibly brutal and mentally scarring. The one in the Shire was and they didn't need any more memories like that. They ran at the crows chittering and telling them to 'GO away for your own safety before Reginald wakes up.'

Several birds looked at them and let out a laughing caw and pecked at them, Hob and Bob did their best to scare off the crows and warn them but eventually the argument did exactly what the two brothers feared would happen. Reginald the third was once more awake.

He crawled out of the burrow he'd made under the oak tree looking rough, his fur was tousled and ill laying and his left lip was stuck showing his sharp canine because his mouth was so dry. His left eye was half squinted shut and made a thucking noise and he moved his tongue trying to get moisture back into his mouth. His eyes settled on the crows and Bob and Hob ran.

Flat out sprinted until the had found a safe hiding place with the ent that had been around. What happened next, one might call a murder of a murder, to this day there are huorns in fangorn that whisper of the mad raccoon that ate an entire flock of crows one at a time until only one was left and it flew off in a frenzied panic with a raccoon chasing after it a dead crow in each hand and one in his mouth. It is quite possible that these trees used Reginald the Third as their mental image when they later marched on Helms Deep and destroyed the forces of Isengard. Nobody is honestly brave enough to ask.

Dart the Nuthatch

Caw CAW caw CAW! Cack cack cack!

This was very much not the flock Dart was hoping for. Crows were big and scary and ate birds like him during those tender egg and wee nestling days. They were positively ravenous and downright murderous!

Being a bird in his first winter, Dart was not proficient in Crow. He thought he got the gist of it. It sounded like they were arguing over some shiny thing, or was it a ring?? and missed chances for world domination.

Dart did not want to live in a world ruled by crow-verlords. He just wanted to eat nuts and meet nice ladybirds and was glad they had not got the thing, or ring, or whatever it was. It seemed like the raccoons might attempt to battle the crows.

Nuts were more important. Nuts were vital. Nuts were life. Dart went in search of more.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

The sun beat down even stronger on Mister Black's Willow den. It had melted all the snow around the Willow's big feet. There were patches of dark moldy earth everywhere in the forest now. That meant that digging would be easier soon. And food would be more abundant. And, most importantly, there would be less thieving. One would think that a creature, like Mister Black, from Mirkwood would have no scruples about thieving, but he did. Maybe he would borrow instead. "Ah, that's perfect!" , he thought as he scuttled down from his den. He would see if one of his neighbors had a few to spare. "Why hadn't he thought of borrowing earlier, kuk!"

Three Raccoons

Bob and Hob both heard their brother Reginald coming back before they saw him coming back. he was trying and failing utterly miserably to actually eat the nut he'd somehow managed to get from one of the birds that he had massacred. He also had a rather large bag of feathers with him, apparently he was planning on going back to sleep now that he'd eaten something after the mushroom incident. It was probably for the best until the mushrooms completely wore off. of course the two of them could only hope that no more crows would show up and bicker while he was sleeping if he started sleeping once more.

They looked about there was a fair number more nuts available so it would likely be best if they had more nuts for when Reginald woke up again. After all poultry could only keep one full so long. Bob for his part returned to guarding the nuts for this round making a tiny fence of crow leg bones spiked up from the ground around the pile to protect the stash while Hob headed off to see if he could get another nut or two.

Lusola, stealing everything from Tenebrous because he’s too boring -26 Nuts

What luck! The little black cardinal happened to be flying over Fangorn on his little birdy world tour and he came upon a pile of nuts that almost reached the top of the trees! Well not really, at all, but it was a big pile of them nonetheless. There was a creepy looking dead squirrel next to them. As he landed, Lusola wandered what happened to the squirrel and why it looked like it was trying to eat willow branches. Squirrels didn’t eat willow branches! He chirped, very concerned. Maybe they did in Fangorn. He’d only heard rumors of this forest from adventure birds from the west and all those rumors were rather scary. Haunted forests and trees that moved and large piles of nuts out in the middle of nowhere. How strange! Still, he was very hungry and would it really hurt to steal the nuts from the clearly dead and gone squirrel? Who was going to miss the pile? He chirped again, announcing to anyone that could hear him that he claimed this little pile right here.

Oh! Well look at that! There were piles all over the place! Did they all belong to the squirrel? Probably not. Who did they belong to though? As a newcomer, the black cardinal had no idea about the hierarchy of forest animals here. Out in the desert things were different, it was much more a free for all. Surely taking one or two nuts wouldn’t hurt. Right? Some variety at least would only improve his digestion.

Dart the Nuthatch

Those raccoons certainly...took care...of the crows. There was now a very sickening line of hollow crow bones surrounding the raccoon's stash. Dart shook and shivered and quaked with fear at the sight of it. He did not like crows. But he did not like dead birds, either! When one of the raccoons came for him next, Dart abandoned his pile of nuts and scrambled into flight to get away as fast as he could! He did not want to do be the raccoon's next meal!

Even more frightful, one of the crows appeared to arise from death! What was happening in this forest?! No, wait...Lusola was not a crow! Inspired by his avian cousin who seemed very confident and bold, Dart fluttered closer to see if this bird was friendly. "Tereep?" he said cautiously, with an eye on the raccoon's nearby nut pile.

Three Raccoons

TREACHERY! OATHBREAKER. It really didn't matter to the raccoons that it was some daft bird that took over the Willow Squirrels stash. They had a working alliance. And that was BETRAYED.

Indeed immediately the three brothers becan working to lay a rather harsh curse upon the black bird. Something about not being able to comfortably nest until his oath was fulfilled there were several more parts to it but they were not child friendly and as such shall not be repeated here. Just know that there may soon be an entire forest of the Undead similar to the paths of the undead for the raccoons were that upset by the betrayal.

With that they immediately went to reclaim their nuts not caring if they stole from the betrayer.

Mister Black (Mirkwood Squirrel)

It worked! He had asked politely (his version of polite being: you ask then take without waiting for a response) and he had received. Why hadn't he been doing this all along? His tree den would have been stuffed with nuts and such.
Happy with himself and the beautiful weather that was now drying and changing the forest around him, he skipped over the tree tops to his other neighbor with good intentions and a polite word upon his squirrely lips.

Lusola - 29 Nuts

Oh dear! Oh my! This forest was rather active after all! Lusola had been so intent on getting those nuts that he didn’t see any of the other creatures wandering about. And look there! He chirped a greeting to his fellow bird. “Tereep!” he confirmed. Most definitely. He was just about to say hello and good morning when a trio of ill tempered and ill groom raccoons burst out of the underbrush! With the superior grace granted to all birds, the little desert cardinal was able to doge the angry creatures and carry his newly won nuts to the pile he’d claimed as his own. He preened and floofed his feathers in pride. What were those raccoons so angry about? Did they think he killed the squirrel? Had they made some sort of deal with the creepy pile of willow branches? If they had, it was no business of Lusola’s! He treeped as much at them, but he was not confident they would understand him. There was a language barrier between trash pandas and birds that he’d never been able to traverse. He’d never actually tried, naturally, but he imagined it would have been quite difficult. He looked to the nuthatch as if to say “are they always like this?” with two chirps and tilt of his head. In the meantime, he was… Oh avian gods! They were coming this way! Panicking, Lusola burst into flight, his tiny wings fluttering as fast as they could. He wished he hadn’t eaten such a heavy breakfast that morning, he felt heavy and weighed down. His stomach gurgled then, with an audible POP the feeling of heaviness vanished as he realized he’d relieved himself directly on to the attack raccoons. Oh dear! Well, when one’s life is at stake, a bird will do all sorts of things. He fluttered back down on the nut pile from before and perched with an air of ownership, grabbing two more nuts in his claws, staring directly at the raccoons.

Dart the Nuthatch
appearing in:
The Final Nut-down...

Dart bobbed his tail with pride upon meeting his new feathered friend. “Tereep cheep cheep tereeeep cheep cheep!” He sang a pleasant little song from a branch (big enough for his new self, he had learnt his lesson!). Dart was not as brave as Lusola. It was safe from the raccoons up here for now.

But not safe from chattering thieving black squirrel. Dart heard Mister Black chitter at him, but did not understand. And then the squirrel tried to paw two of his best nuts! Just like that, right in front of the Once and Future King of Nuts! (Yes, Dart was still determined to reclaim his crown…)

Dart fluffed up his feathers as puffy as he could (and in doing so, caused his tiny, undersized feet to nearly disappear beneath all the fluff) and went chasing after Mister Black, scolding him for his audacious attempts at such unrefined filching!

Satisfied he had made his point, Dart returned to his avian ally and dove toward the raccoon’s nuts. He hoped he would not crash his head into Lusola’s because
1) Lusola had quite the tuft of feathers to ram into and
2) Dart was a Nuthatch, not a Woodpecker, and as such, his brain was not accustomed to going whooshing around in his skull.

Three Raccoons

Honestly everyone was against them it seemed. Not that it would do them very good. They couldn't win stealing from the Raccoons so the Three brothers headed to see if they could steal from Lusola. Or eat him. With Reginald coming with them it was a toss up what would possibly happen.

With that they slunk away knowing full well this was all that they could possibly do, ignoring the nuthatch which was honestly had no hope of becoming the King of nuts again the raccons decided it was time for one final bid at glory. They needed to steal three nuts, and hope that the greed of the nuthatch saw it's plans on their stash, the second largest in the forest ruined.

Lusola - 29 Nuts

It was time for Lusola to stop being nice and polite. While, yes, he hadn’t been overly polite to the raccoons before (pooing on someone is usually frowned upon in polite, non-bird society but these raccoons were so blind apparently they hadn’t even realized it happened to them), the threat of being eaten by such grubby little creatures was beyond the pale, and no Lusola was not reading minds or breaking the fourth wall, thank you very much, the raccoons were making it quite obvious what their intentions were. Little Lusola was going to have to act quickly. The little game was almost over, according to the word of God Sil the game master (don’t ask). He had quite a bit of nuts in his little pile that he planned on sharing with all his friends afterward, but that pile was being threatened by the raccoons. The question in Lusola’s mind was, should he try and defend his hoard, or should he go after the raccoons’ stash? Did raccoons even eat nuts? The little desert cardinal was confused, trash pandas were weird and these were even weirder. His newest friend, the nuthatch, was going for the raccoon stash. If Lusola had any hopes of winning and surviving, he was going to have to do the same, even if they managed to steal from him, if he managed to nab a few from their pile in the meantime he could still come out on top, if only narrowly. Right? Lusola was not great at maths, being a bird, but there was a logic to his decision.
