IK Racing Season 1 Race 8

Beneath the normally thick crown of foliage Fangorn seemed a bit lighter and brighter today, the trees had stretched their limbs upward letting a bit more light in, and with the promise of no axes and a bunch of cute animals running around the trees were in top spirits. One could even hear happy creaking and groaning at the thought of their very own race happening, it had been a long time indeed since squirrels and other animals had run through their racing course.

Several older trees had lifted their large gnarled roots to make seats for those that wanted to sit (even promising Treebeard they'd not swallow up anyone in their roots)

There were many great rows of crates, each row a different size, and flagged with different colours, with the names of the kingdom over them. There was quite a ruckus in a few of them as some of the animals knew it was time to race and they were quite excited, others were lazy lumps and fast asleep. All of the crates held animals that any person might use to race for that particular kingdom should they not have their own.

Imladris crates hold hedgehogs and are posted under the colour #408080 (Teal)

Lothlorien crates hold foxes and are posted under the colour #00BFFF (Light Blue)

Khazad Dum crates hold badgers and are posted under the colour #808080 (Grey)

Gondor crates hold skunks and are posted under the colour BLACK (No colour code required)

Rohan crates hold raccoons and are posted under the colour #00BF00 (Light Green)

Shire crates hold coneys and are posted under the colour #800080 (Purple)

Fangorn crates hold squirrels and are posted under the colour #008000 (Green)

Isengard crates hold rats (of ususal size) and are posted under the colour #0040FF (Royal Blue)

Mordor crates hold snakes and are posted under the colour #800000 (Dark Red)

From somewhere deep in the forest came a BOORA ROOM and a call for the racers to take their places.

"We invite all racers to chose whichever kingdom they would like to participate as, but please only participate for ONE kingdom, all of our major announcements for the race will be made over this channel. (#FF0000 - BRIGHT RED)

Nerys with Nemesis

Well, they really needed to hire a new decorator stat, Nerys thought as she meandered into the clearing, all this green and brown was positively horrifying. Add in the presence of several cute and winsome creatures that would be better displayed as a trophy wall and it was almost too much to witness. Clearly no-one in the free lands knew how to accessorise properly, or that blood-red was a colour that could really make a scene pop; it was enough to make her home-sick. Making her way across the glade to an ancient oak, she elegantly took a seat upon a smooth, wide root as the call went out for the racers to assemble.

Nemesis was delighted at the lands they were racing in, and she wound her way happily to the starting line. The forest foliage of both the canopy and the ground promised to be excellent hunting grounds, and she could already see several small animals scurrying about the branches. As the call sounded for the racers, the scurrying and squeaking only got more noticeable, almost distracting her from the race. Shaking herself out of her trance, she fixed her eyes firmly on the track, there'd be plenty of time for snacking later.

1 A roll and 1 B roll please!

Talina with Stinky

This was the second race that Talina had participated in (the first being a boat race in Imladris), and since she was going to be in Fangorn anyway (there were rumors that an Elf prisoner had recently escaped from the Dark Land, and the wannabe Ranger wanted to see if she could lend a hand; that is, if the rumors turned out to be true. For all Talina knew, the poor woman could have either gotten recaptured or killed by now), she thought that she would try out this particular racing game. "At least it doesn't take place on water, since I'm still not very good at that." the only surviving member of her family to survive the attack on Pelargir by the Corsairs of Umbar thought to herself.

Her racer, a skunk by the name of Stinky by all things, quickly skittered away to the starting line, like he was itching to get this race under way. The only other participant seemed to be a minion and she had a female Lava Snake with her. "How can servants of the Enemy live in such conditions?" Talina thought to herself as she took her place in the spectator stand. She was of course referring to the proximity to Mount Doom, Mordor's local active volcano and the place rumored to be the only place his chief weapon could be destroyed, but that fight wasn't on her hands (at least, not yet). She just hoped her opponent's Lava Snake (whose name was Nemesis, of all things) wouldn't swallow Stinky up....

Let's start with a B roll, please

OOC: I thought that I would give Talina a shot at this, since Naelia's busy with the Towers of No Return at the moment, but will be back with Asmodeus to race in the finals (or whatever its called) in November

Drifa with Dragon

The season had come around again. Here Drifa was, back in Fangorn. Dragon, the badger, was quite excited to race again. His tutu was starched, and his bristly coat clean and shiny. It didn't take much effort to lure the creature from his crate. Her racer, Dragon, came out on his own; this was good news for Drifa had not obtained many worms on their way to the race. But, she was not worried. The area around and about the forest would have many good hiding places where she could find a worm, grub, or slug.
As she walked beside her racer to the start line, she noticed a few more than usual competitors. A skunk and a snake would be racing, it appeared. Right off, she made up names for them: Slink and Stink. She smiled behind her hand at her little joke. Then calling out to the creature's trainers in a sportsman-like manner, she said.

"Best of luck and good racing!"

A and B roll, please.

Looks like this is shaping up to be a race where everyone sees how far backwards they can go from the starting line!

@Lady of Shadow as Talina with Stinky the Skunk ( 1 B roll -12 ) -3 It appears your skunk caught sight of a pair of really strange eyes in the woods that were far bigger than they aught to be. How do you calm your skunk down?

@Afird Splitax as Drifa with Dragon the Badger(1 A roll, 1 B roll 4, 15) -2, 0 Your badger while quite happy going backwards thinks you should have brought treats from home, what treat in particular is your badger missing?

Nemesis

Eyes narrowing at the skunk and badger that lined up with her, Nemesis waited for the start, tongue flickering in agitation. She wanted to be off, she wanted to crush those who dared to oppose her, she wanted ... she wanted that yummy smell. Greedily she tried to draw more of the scent into her lungs, was it? could it be? it was mouse flesh! After the cruel disappointment of Gondor she could only thank the snacking gods for this gift. Yummy, yummy mouse ... Nemesis was practically drooling, all thoughts of the race driven from her mind. As the race was started she launched herself forward, a sight that would have bought fear into the hearts of her opponents, if only she had not already turned towards the source of that delicious scent.

With lethal quickness she slithered along the forest floor, the scent like a beacon before her, blinding her to all else, .. but even she could not ignore the wicked edge of the dagger that thudded into the ground just in front of her nose. Skidding to a stop was a little hard for a snake, and provided a few interesting moments that left her with her nose almost pressed against the dagger as she tried to fathom what had happened. It didn't take long for the dagger to be joined by a worn pair of boots and as she looked up, up, up at the sight of her pet human, and it occurred to her that the noise of the crowd was now behind her, Nemesis realised she might be in trouble.

Nerys had been slumped on the root bench, clearly bored with the whole event, but even she could not ignore the sight of Nemesis zooming in the wrong direction like the idiot she was. Beautiful, cruel and deadly, yes, intelligent .. for a snake; but clever, well sadly this little spectacle proved that ambition to be out of reach. This embarrassment could not be allowed to continue however, and she trusted that the sudden appearance of a dagger would confuse the snake long enough for her to catch up.

Little could be heard of the hissed conversation given the distance from the crowds, but as the Black Numenorean once again stood tall, most could easily see the raised eyebrow of doom, the fearsome scowl of you're in trouble, and the pointed finger of do as you're told as she gestured towards the race track.

Drifa with Dragon

'Skunks and Adders!' exclaimed Drifa. What was Dragon up to? He appeared to be going backwards. Lifting a nearby rock, she found a wiggly worm. A fat juice one, it was. She made her way towards the badger, who had stopped two steps behind the starting line. The other racers ( a snake and skunk) were even further behind the start line. Enticing the badger with the worm, Drifa murmured to him.

'To win this race, dear Dragon, one must go in the right direction. Here!' she said, offering him the worm. 'This will set things right.'
But the badger turned his nose up to the Fangorn worm. Drifa should have known this would happen; he was a pampered creature after all. Reaching into her pack, she brought out the airtight container which held the Spring worms from the rich valley near the Mirrormere. She put the foreign worm into the container. Surely it would not be detectable by her racer's nose after time spent in the dirt.
Dragon gobbled up the familiar scented worm and scuttled back towards the start line.

Talina with Stinky

"Stinky, no! Concentrate on the race!" Talina yelled when she noticed that Stinky seemed intent on investigating whomever's (or whatever's) eyes had spotted him. He didn't seem to be the only contestant that was distracted, but Talina thought that if she could get him back on track, that maybe, just maybe, they might end up being the victor of this particular race (but against a Lava Snake of Mordor, her hopes were pretty low at this point, and she hoped it wasn't her eyes that had spotted her little skunk, though Stinky could always spray Nemesis with his secret weapon...)

As for why she came to Fangorn in the first place, she wasn't sure if it was false information or the poor girl got herself recaptured, but Talina wasn't going to sneak into Mordor to find out. "My prayers be with that poor girl... " Talina thought to herself, even though she wasn't big on that kind of stuff. After all, it didn't seem to help in bringing her parents back, so why should it help with the Elven prisoner?

As for Stinky, the minute he heard the scolding from his handler, he seemed to lose interest in the strange eyes and wandered back on to the racecourse, but now there was also another small animal here. Not encountering many badgers, he decided to let him or her be and steer clear of the snake, in hopes he didn't suffer a similar fate to a Mordorian racer, once upon a time.

Lets try both an A and B roll this time around

Nemesis

Gaze flickering from the finger to the scowl to the forest behind her human, Nemesis weighed her options. The human was clearly annoyed, and then there was also that wickedly curved dagger imbedded in the grass right in front of her to think of. The last time Nemesis had seen someone annoy the moody one there had barely been enough pieces left to identify the body, and she didn't really want to tangle with her when she had that dagger so close to hand. But ... then there was that siren call on the air ... tantalising and teasing her, she could almost imagine the mice frolicking in the grass just a few feet away, each tempting morsel just waiting to be swallowed down.

Eyes still darting wildly from one object to another, Nemesis knew there was only one thing a self-respecting predator could do, and really who could expect different from a snake? Letting out a sibilant noise, that accompanied by the flicking of her tongue, might easily have been taken for a raspberry, she darted around both dagger and human, heedless of the race getting further away in the background.

Drifa and Dragon

Dragon was finally going in the right direction (Slink and Stink, her pet names for the competitors), we're still way behind the finish line. Drifa was pleased. If her badger could get a bit further ahead, they may have a chance against the slithering snake and the fragrant skunk. Alas, the lead chance faltered, for suddenly, from the forest came a growl and yelp (unmistakable for Drifa had heard it before). A female badger.
Dragon turned his head towards the sound and let out a weird, unearthly scream that raised gooseflesh on the dwarfs' arms. He took off with a start into the forest. There was nothing she could do to stop him. It was approaching mating season, and one could not interfere with nature's callings, even one with a badger in a pink tutu. The good thing was, the badger was heading in the right direction. Hopefully, he would not stray from that course and would not damage his tutu in the process.

A and B roll, please.

Nemesis

Nerys was done ... this much stupid was just too painful. It was either retire back to her bench in a sour mood or wring her snakes neck. As she was sometimes, just a little, fond of the snake - in a very minionish way, she decided it would be better to take a nap and forget this whole embarrassment of a race was happening. Or maybe she could celebrate that they were the best at being the worst? Either way she was leaving Nemesis to her own devices, no matter what happened.

Nemesis knew they were near, the mice scent strong within the soft breeze. She darted along quite happily until a deep "Hoom" split the air, the vibrations feeling like they were shaking her in her skin and left her completely disorientated. As she tried to remember who she was, and what was happening she felt a large shape looming over her. Unlike with her owner she couldn't crane her head back that far, but it seemed that wouldn't be a problem, as the creature had actually picked her up in its fat, root-like fingers. Coming face to face with it, Nemesis tried to work out what it could be, it was somehow both troll-ish and tree-ish, but not. As she hung there its small, bright eyes seemed to be examining her and its voice once more rumbled out "Hoom now, and where are you going so hastily, young serpent? I hope you are not hunting any other living creature in our glade?"

Much as she wanted to simply nod, sink her fangs into its fingers and go merrily on her way, Nemesis could see there would be no getting through its bark-like hide. Suddenly she realised she had heard rumours of the not-trolls, not-trees even in Mordor ... they were Ents! And if these were Ents they would be searching for something very particular. While Nemesis hadn't yet managed to train her pet human enough to understand her language, this not-troll, not-tree Ent looked like maybe it could; "Entssss wivesss, ssssssouth" she hissed, her tail pointing in the right direction. She laughed to herself as she was dropped back to the forest floor, feeling no shame in the knowledge that all he would find that way was a scorched, barren and empty land.

Drifa and Dragon

Dragon, the racing badger saw the female, and he grunted and smiled (yes, you may imagine a badger smiling). The female batted her eyelashes ( again, you may imagine this) and back away from the male coyly. She then began, in badger speak, to sing:

Say hey, good lookin' - what ya got cookin'?
How's about cooking somethin' up with me?
Hey, sweet baby - don't you think maybe
We can find us a brand new recipe?
I got a few juicy worms and two or three fat slugs
And I know a spot right over the hill
There's a deep den, and the place is free
So if you wanna have fun, come along with me
Say hey, good lookin' - what ya got cookin'?
How's about cooking somethin' up with me?
I'm free and ready, so we can go steady.
How's about saving all your time for me?
No more lookin' - I know I been cookin'
Hows about keepin' steady company?
I'm gonna throw my other badger lovers over the fence
And only have one, like you, my true love
I'll keep you till we are both old with age
Cause I'm looking at you over all others today
Say hey, good lookin' - what ya got cookin'?
How's about cooking somethin' up with me?

***Dragon eventually got back to the race, with ruffled hair and a silly grin (yes, badgers grin too) upon his face.

A and B roll, please.

Drifa and Dragon

The race was going nowhere fast, and it was half over. Drifa stroked her beard and wondered at this. Coming out from the woods with a foolish grin upon his face, the badger headed off back into another part of the woods. He was not screaming this time but seemed to be sleepy-looking. 'Maybe he was off for a nap,' thought the old dwarf. Shrugging her shoulders, she let him be. He was "old enough and perhaps wise enough" to know that the race was still on.
As the old dwarf sat back and let events take their course, Dragon was off to do precisely what his trainer guessed; find a nice comfy hole to have a long nap. That she badger had worn him right out.

Nemesis

Nemesis was feeling a little glum as she slithered back towards the track, she had been foiled in the great hunt of the snacks and she wasn't happy. Not only was she still snackless, but that not-troll, not-tree thing had picked her up like she was a common snake! Hissing in indignation she made her way slowly back up the track, her heart clearly not in the race, instead it was focused on revenge. Dreamily she imagined all that she could do, eventually all the Free Peoples would bow before her as their queen!! All would love her and despair!! Actually that sounded like quite a bit of work and Nemesis wasn't really about 'work' or 'effort'. As she passed the slumbering form of her pet human she realised there was a much easier way to cheer herself up.

A moments hesitation struck her as she wound herself over to the bench where Nerys was sleeping ... but then she remembered if not for the dagger she might even then be snacking happily, and any doubt disappeared. Spotting a delightful little nest of eggs perched in the tree that formed the bench, she carefully made her way up the bark, a few deep hisses scaring away the bird perched there. Edging her way down the branch, she peered down to check that Nerys was still sleeping, tried to line up the perfect angle ... and with a very gentle, careful push sent the nest plummeting down. Quick as a flash Nemesis dashed back down the branch, and making her way back to the ground using the side of the tree away from the furious curses, chuckled as she made her way back to the course.

Drifa and Dragon

She first heard then saw her racer, Dragon, dash from the woods and run down the race track fast and furiously. So surprised was she that she dropped the comb she had been using to take the tangles out of her beard.

Drifa stooped to retrieve the comb and watched as the badger ran forward on the track. He seemed full of spit and vim, no longer in a romantic state of sleepiness. What had made the change in the creature, she did not know. But, he was heading in the right direction now, and that was good.

Dragon, the badger, had his plan. He was keen to get this race over with now, for he knew that waiting for him in the woods was the feisty she badger that promised more fun and frolicking.
'A short nap now, mind you.' she had said. 'Then get back to racing so that we can get back to having fun!'
And that, having slept a short time, precisely was what Dragon had done.

Nemesis

Nemesis was starting to feel that she was a little lost. The sounds of the forest came loud and clear all around, but what she couldn't hear were the sounds of the crowd or the other racers. As she tried to get her bearings she spotted what seemed to be an opening flagged by two trees. As she approached cautiously the trees seemed to bend down, their branches and leaves rustling. If she didn't know better she'd say they were rustling ... angrily? Whatever the meaning she wasn't impressed, letting loose an angry hiss of her own to face them down. The rustling subsided, so she passed on, travelling along a tree-lined corridor. A few bowls were sat on a stone table under an overhang, and being a nosy snake Nemesis couldn't resist taking a closer look around. One she'd scaled the table she found a large, shallow bowl was filled with water, that seemed to glow faintly in the light. Used to some very dubious looking water in Mordor, she didn't give it a second thought before dipping her jaw in to take a long drink. Bizarrely she felt almost as if she was fizzing, the sensation travelling from the tip of her tail up to her head, and with it came a lovely wave of sleepiness. Wary of being stepped on by one of the walking not-trees, she decided perching in the branches of a nearby tree would be the safest place for a nap.

Several hours later, Nemesis woke feeling refreshed, a feeling the lasted too briefly as a voice boomed just a few feet away, "Hoom, now I see you've awoken serpent. What are you doing not just in my home but asleep in my branches, hmm?" What followed probably seemed like a very strange one-sided conversation to anyone close enough to overhear. There was mention of strides, and walking songs and various snatches of verses until it ended with a "Well that seems strange to me, hmmm, but then you are rather small." Hissing happily, Nemesis settled in for the ride to the finish line; when she'd seen that ridiculous fitness tracker (what else could a chart of ent-strides per day be?) tacked up next to the bed, she'd guessed it wouldn't take much flattery (or criticism) to suggest that a few extra steps today would only be a benefit. A subtle suggestion that as one of the do-gooder races he could help her by bending his steps in a certain direction to save her tired scales, and Nemesis had a perfect way to travel with little effort from herself.

3 A rolls please!

Whether or not the old Ent had drunk too deeply or too much ent-draught, he stood reciting the names of places and Entmaidens names for far too long the badger to have patience. Besides, badgers were not on the long list. Snubbing like this by the Eldest of the eldest could not be ignored. And, of course, there was the rendevous with the female badger to attend. And a race. And so, with no further ado, Dragon padded off down the race track with not even a fare thee do. Let the Old Ent come and stop him. He would have a word to say about the list that would make the Eldest think he had forgotten a thing or two.

2A and 1B roll, please.

Congratulations to @Zôraphêl for winning the 8th race!

And thanks to the other participants for a race well done even if 90% of the race was going backwards!

We'll be in Rohan next with the racoons... even though apparently Fangorn is the racoons for Halloween!
