What are you listening to?
This was one of my favourite threads from the original Plaza. I like discovering new songs or finding members who enjoy the same artists as me. Just let us know what music you've been listening to, or if you're not listening to anything, what are your favourite songs and artists?
I don't think we're able to share Youtube videos directly in a post yet (correct me if I'm wrong), so just copy the link if you want to share with everyone.

Some of you that know me from before may be aware that my kind of music is heavy like metal. But I listen to a lot of other stuff too. Lately the song I've been listening to over and over is In Your Eyes - The Weeknd, which I really just find beautiful. https://youtu.be/dqRZDebPIGs
And a unique and interesting album I've been listening to lately on Spotify (a couple times now) is Tron: Legacy Reconfigured, which is Daft Punk's Tron soundtrack but remixed by other artists. I'd say you probably have to enjoy electronic music to enjoy this, but I've never seen the movie and it makes me want to watch it.
What're you listening to?
Hmmm at the moment, as a hobbie, I cut music for a 3D avatar game. So music is always running in the background regardless. The song that I tweaked with, was fragile by tatsaro. It kind of has an old lovie dovey feel to it but I tend to stick to the unusual when I remix songs. As long as it's not country.

Nice...I have been listening for years now to what I call Nordic music. Anyone who wants to know what...does Wardruna, Heilung ring a bell? Look up Heilung on YouTube and look fora live concert with the name Lifa.

@Ult I have a strong passion for Nordic music as well! Wardruna and Heilung are the gold standards in my opinion. Gaetir the Mountainkeeper has become a favorite of mine in the last few years (though it can considered more ambient than "music").

I'm a sucker for amateur remixes and mashups, though this is a full instrumental cover, so a little outside the norm. Surprisingly effective, though!

@Ult, nice one. I can't say Nordic music is anything I've ever listened to in its own pure form. I actually watched quite a bit of that video you linked to. I've always heard bits and pieces of this kind of music in some of the metal I listen to, and even some TV shows now like Vikings, so it's a familiar sound to me and quite easy to listen to in full. I wish I could understand more of the symbolic and ritualistic side of the performance.
Heilung is really great. I've been to three of their concerts and I was there at their very 1st concert that is on YouTube, the Lifa concert at Castlefest. Once you immerse yourselves...ah, I've seen so many understand what is happening there once they experienced it. There is not quite anything like it. And Wardruna is extroordinary. Both they have become very big. I've got acquainted with some of the musicians in the Nordic music.Dwim wrote: ↑Sun May 24, 2020 1:47 am @Ult, nice one. There are groups on face book for both bands and through them you learn a lot more. Some are really very serious into what's it all about, some less, but I love to read about it. The musicians are very down to earth and very authentic.

I've been listening to a bunch of stuff on my Spotify. I have lots of lists, even broken up by year the song was released, so feel free to listen. Mostly though, I've lately been obsessed with this band called Valley. Heard one of their songs on my Spotify Discovery Weekly playlist (Swim) about 1.5-2 years ago when they only had one or two songs on Spotify. Then saw them open for another band (The Band Camino) last year at First Ave and they put on an absolutely amazing live show (plus, they're Canadian and super nice). Definitely recommend checking them out if you enjoy fun, bouncy, poppy sounds with some guitar flair and male/female harmonies. My favorite songs are Swim, There's Still a Light in the House, and Park Bench.
Here's a cover of Lennon Stella's Golf on TV that they did with Scott Helman. Honestly, I think it's way better than the original. It's a great feel-good song and they make the music match that.

Thalionwen, I love The Oh Hellos. They put on a crazy good live show. They have a *huge* band and the violinist is a lot of fun to watch. My only disappointment was that they didn't play Hello My Old Heart when I saw them.

@Eldy Dunami ahh yes! I agree, Mezzanine has to be in contention for a top 1 album for me too.
Gonna link an entire concert, don't really expect people to listen to the whole thing but it's a pretty good look at an overview of Devin Townsend's VERY long career in metal at this point. The first song is his most popular and iconic one if you had to listen to just one song. Also this was livestreamed and then posted to youtube, and I love live performances. 2:40 I think is when the first song actually begins if you want to skip to it.

I also enjoy the practically unknown Ben Caplan. He's a very eccentric fellow whose lyrics are particularly poetic, here's a slightly old live performance from him:

I've also been relistening to the Muse album Simulation Theory, which came out in 2018. Still a banger!

@Flame Fried Ent I think saw you mention elsewhere you're a fellow Manitoban? Yesterday, it's become a sort of July 4th tradition to me, to watch the musical 1776. They made a movie based off the musical in 1972 and most of the cast performed in the musical which I believe ran from 1969-1972.
Campy, entertaining, but also really educational. A lot of innuendos, but also like how they address all the issues and hotly debated contention in deciding independence. I think they went for an accurate and entertaining portrayal of the issues.

Some think to be strong is to be hard like stone. Others know to be strong is to endure like stone.
Lol, so I've been on a nostalgia kick listening to Green Day-- partially because we have the score for American Idiot around, so for musical theatre thrills my housemate and I play and sing that, and then because I've been using my kickbag, and Green Day just seems the perfect backing track for that.
Green Day was the first music I learned when my friends and I had a wee band in middle school... XD So it's reliving all the angst and the wee Toast shredding (not really) those solos at MS talent shows. Don't you wish you could have been there. Especially when my amp cord didn't work. And my other two friends had to tell knock knock jokes while I traded it out mid show.
Yes. It's amazing I can still listen to Green Day with a straight face.

I do this sort of nostalgia kick every once in a while with early-mid 2000's sort of emo rock or whatever sub-genre it's supposed to be called. Blink-182, Green Day, MCR, etc. It's always a blast (for me, not necessarily for anyone else in the house)Burnt Toast wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 10:41 pm Yes. @Dwim hit me up with those metalcore recommendations I am so ready to add some bands to the potential list!
@KingODuckingham, hey someone read my Ringwraith Review post!
Not sure how well versed with metalcore you are (there's still a whole world of bands I haven't listened to), but here's the ones I've listened to the most over the last couple years. The list may be a little Aussie biased, but we have been doing it right lately :
Parkway Drive - For a more accessible sound, listen to albums Reverence and Ire. And for even heavier, listen to Atlas or Deep Blue.
The Amity Affliction - For a sample, listen to the song Soak Me In Bleach. But I think their best album is Misery.
In Hearts Wake - For a balls-out crazy, unique song, listen to the song Worldwide Suicide. But I think their best album and sound is Skydancer.
Bring Me The Horizon - Lots of people know about this band now! They've changed their sound an incredible amount lately, but their masterpiece album is Sempiternal.

I have been listening to a ton of really bad pop punk music. You know, the super whiny kind with terrible vocals and really good guitar riffs that are drowned out with purposely bad sound editing? Examples being:
"Randy, I Am The Liquor" by Free Throw
"Black Me Out" by Against Me!
"Convinced I'm Wrong" by Polar Bear Club
On the less bad side, lol, I heard a really great song (if you like heavy music) by After the Burial called "Lost in the Static". So good.

Thanks Dwim! *furiously scribbles some notes* I greatly enjoy metal, but the genre is so huge and there's always more sub-genres to find, it seems! I was listening to a band the other night called Tessaract who are apparently classified as "djent", a sub-genre of progressive metal. Very technical, related to "mathcore", which is a hilarious name for a kind of music, but I am surprisingly into it. I will report back after doing some metalcore listening!
@KingODuckingham, I will also have a listen to Tesseract, thank you! I have heard djent before, but not much of it. But if you're interested in that, then I would highly recommend the band Periphery. They are amazing, and very technical too. I saw them once when they came to Australia and they sounded awesome live too.
I'm listening to Trevor McDonald's selection on Classic FM. And I will not apologise!
The Wood-elves lingered in the twilight of our Sun and Moon, but loved best the stars.
Listening to some great epic music from good ole Audiomachine as I write. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bePs4hbn-fY&t=3841s
"Eriol... 'One who dreams alone.' ” - Tolkien, The Book of Lost Tales I
I have been seriously jamming to a new artist I found named John Louis. His song "The South" is fantastic.
@Dwim I really thought Periphery was nifty! And I love bands that can give stellar live performances, it's difficult but the technical prowess really gets me going.
If there are any fans of dark ambient music here, I have to recommend an old acquaintance of mine, Flowers for Bodysnatchers. He wrote an album a few years ago call Aokigahara that contains a lot of actual field recordings of the forest itself mixed together with minimalist piano melodies. My favorite on the album is And There is a Darkness

I love EDM. I've mostly been listening to a lot of melodic bass lately, like Seven Lions, among others. I love that there are so many varied tastes here! Frostbite, I will definitely check that out, did he record the forest himself?
The YouTube algorithm started showing me recommendations for Pendulum (drum and bass) songs lately, so I've spent much of the past couple days with that playing in the background. "Blood Sugar" is the first song it suggested to me, soon followed by "The Island". I think @Dwim linked me to the second video back in the day, but that was at least nine years ago, so I might be misremembering.

I'm really late to the party but I am listening to Lord Huron's Strange Trails album for the first time and I am absolutely loving it and wondering how I lived without their music in my life before. I get most of my music rec's on Pandora, which is how I found them. I particularly like Meet Me in the Woods - but with a warning the lyrics contains adult language that would be filtered on the Plaza.

@Eldy Dunami, I am certain you're right that it was me that linked you to the Pendulum song. I remember some time around then some of us Plazaites who had each other on Facebook took part in this thing of sharing a song a day. I definitely remember sharing that as one of them. Unfortunately, Pendulum haven't released anything since then (although two of the members formed a similar band called Knife Party). They've hinted at maybe releasing some new stuff some time though.
@Tari, there is nothing unclassy about listening to Lizzo! My partner really likes her, and therefore by default I do too. I heard more of her during the pandemic then I ever had before!
Edit: I forgot the whole point of what I came here to report. For the metal heads: Tonight I have been listening to In Flames. They are a band who I feel have lost their way, but who give me great nostalgia when I listen to some of their albums. From what I listened to tonight, the song Reflect the Storm brought back the strongest feelings. https://youtu.be/sQrUo5mzmGc
EDIT 2: Eldy, can you believe that the morning after I lament that Pendulum haven't released anything in 10 years, they released a surprise song this frickin morning! https://youtu.be/O3FKMYBV01U
