Egg & Spoon Racing (SpringFest)

And of old it was not darksome, but full of light and splendour, as is still remembered in our songs.

THE EGG AND SPOON RACE
Image
This will proceed via normal racing rules (more or less)! You may race as your own character, or as a creature and you are the handler, but obviously everyone will be carrying eggs in spoons, so opposable thumbs may be an advantage here.

You may choose an A ROLL or a B ROLL each round. An A roll will give you 5 chances at making progress, but 1 chance at dropping your egg and having to retrieve it. A B roll will give you chances for much further advancement, but also with the possibility of RP shenanigans and, of course, dropping your egg and having to retrieve it.

To sign up, please RP arriving at the racetrack and fill in the following form:

Handler name:
Racer name:
Racer species:

RULES

* No godmoding, except by the GM.
* Bold your die roll at the top or bottom of your post.
* You may post multiple times per round if you wish to RP, but may only have one die roll per round
* Canon characters first come first served
* Please RP only as one racer, you may have multiple spectators or hecklers

The three brothers came forth as majestically as three very fat well fed raccoons could. Really it was more of a waddle though as they practiced walking on their back two feet practicing for the race to come... Tucked away in Hobs clawed hand was a scrap of paper they'd stolen from the form earlier and gone and tried to figure it out. They'd finally asked Treebeard and found out what it was saying and promptly filled it in.

Handler name:(several smeared paw prints and a nose print meaning Hob)
Racer name: (a much better paw prints however you're pretty certain it's dried blood of some sort and some sort of scratching meaning Bob)
Racer species: (this part of the form has been dipped several times and chewed on meaning raccoon)

Reginald for his part was off to cheer in the stands he'd been informed very thoroughly he was not needed for this race other than encouraging Bob to keep the egg balanced so they could eat it when this was over. Fortunately if they were against any non raccoon or humanoids they'd have an advantage with their opposable thumbs.

With that Bob headed to the starting line egg and spoon in hand

A roll please

Bikki and Nit

Back from the north (having won a dog sled race with One Of Farmer Maggots' Sons), Bikki was surprised to find an Egg and Spoon race in the Mountain City. He was not to scoff at a challenge; he signed his name on the roster and got in line with the three raccoons there. Stranger things had taken place in the stone City, and the young dwarf was not surprised to see the racing critters.

Handler name: Bikki
Racer name: Nit
Racer species: ovum

Bikki and Nit

Bikki held the spoon in front of him gingerly. Nit acted up, rolling around the spoon bowl and behaving terribly. It had taken some time for the young dwarf to move forward without the ovum rolling off the utensil and onto the stone floor. But, he had managed and now was just behind the raccoons. Bikki knew it would be challenging to keep up with the clever-handed creatures. Biting his tongue determinably, he moved forward, spoon trusted out before him.

Bob for his part managed to stand quite decently on his hind two legs and hold onto the spoon and the egg that he had with it. He was quite happy with how he was doing after all there was nobody in front of him yet which meant that as far as he was concerned winning. He could hear the heavy tromp of dwarf feet behind him and new that he had to keep moving if he wanted to keep his lead. HE stretched out his free paw balancing further and took a few more quick steps.

@Drifa: oh dear Bikki and Nit! A passing Raven has flown down and is trying to make off with your egg!! Fend it off before you can move on.

@Fuin Elda Bob is progressing onwards but slowly - it’s hard to balance and you only move forward 1 pace!

Bored out of her mind, Kaylin had jumped at the opportunity to participate in something as interesting as an egg and spoon race. It had taken her a while to get here, seeing as Khazad-Dum was a ways removed from the White City, but here she was, finally. With a glance at the track, she was alarmed to see she looked late in arriving. A dwarf and a.. hold up, a raccoon? Well, this was definitely something she wanted to be a part of. So, anyway, they were already at it! "Oh no," she whispered, and moved with alacrity to fill in the participation form (she had hoped there would be less paperwork in the Dwarven realm, but alas - she had been mistaken).

Handler name: ... I don't need one, thank you
Racer name: Kaylin
Racer species: Men

She desperately needed to catch up.

Bob chittered about the unfair advantage that the normal two leggeds had. Of course nobody actually spoke raccoon so nobody seemed to be paying any real attention as the raccoon carefully made his way forward. Of course a single pace for the other competitors was several places for him and it seemed (at least to him) the the raven that struck at the dwarf that had marched off ahead of him like he was a giant looked to be trying to level the playing field. If it kept it up he'd have to talk Reginald out of eating raven for a bit.

Bikki and Nit

Having gotten the hang of holding the spoon correctly (Nit behaving finally) and picking up his pace, Bikki was feeling quite confident when suddenly, out of the blue, an incredible Raven swept down, and dove feet extended, intended to snatch up a free meal. Bikki grunted and pulled back the spoon toppling the ovum into his deep vest pocket. The Raven called out in a harsh croak, a cantankerous and venomous beast - Raven then beat his wings in the young dwarf's face and flew quickly from the place.

Kaylin and unbridled enthusiasm - these two were no strangers, and their cooperation yielded good results. Motivated by her progress, she continued on, slightly more careful perhaps, but still mostly excited about her presence in the halls of Khazad-Dum and the wonderful foolishness of racing with an egg in a spoon. This was truly her kind of game. The only things that could have made it even better, would have been 1) if she'd been able to place a bet on her performance beforehand and 2) the presence of friends to race against - and quite probably try to sabotage. But sabotaging strangers wasn't hardly as enjoyable, and since they didn't know her and her inclination to well-meant mischief, she was loathe to do so.

Bikki and Nit

The Raven, having lost interest in Bikki and Nit, flew off. Bikki sighed in relief, took the egg from his vest pocket, and placed it on the spoon. Taking a moment to adjust the ovum cradled in the bowl, he moved forward once more. He was a little faster now for catching up to the leaders; raccoon and men of all folks and creatures. He was in the great halls of his kin. He had to make good.

Well he wasn't doing too bad considering how long everyone elses legs were compared to his. He saw that at least one of them the longer legged of them seemed to have dropped their egg. This was his chance! With that Bob did his best to see if he could make it past at least one of these long legged competitors. From the stands he could hear his brothers chittering encouragingly though it seemed that Reginald mostly just wanted him to eat his egg. He couldn't drop it if it and the spoon here in his stomach. Strange strategy.

"Gah!!"As the egg fumbled out of the spoon, Kaylin scowled and then facepalmed herself. Well, that would show her - trying to be careful. Calm and steady wins the race? When had THAT ever been a true saying for her?

"Forget it," she mumbled, retrieving her egg and wiping the hair out of her face with her other hand, spotting the raccoon right behind her. "Let's do this." With renewed vigor, she faced forward again. She bit her lip and went boldly as none were going at the moment!

Bikki and Nit

They had left the raccoons behind as they moved two paces past . Bikki was biting his tongue, concentrating on keeping Nit in the spoon bowl. He had stumbled over a stone on the race track and nearly lost his ovum and only saved it in time. But besides that, he was progressing. Bikki couldn't help but think of the raccoons. They dared to enter a race where their pelts turned into hats in the cold months. Bikki had never owned a coon hat, but many dwarves obtained them from the foresters and did.
Brave creatures indeed, thought Bikki as he held out his spoon with Nit and raced ahead.

Bikki and Nit

Very proud was Bikki for catching up to the other racers ( strange though those racers, maybe) and gaining the lead. And Nit had behaved wonderfully. On a few occasions when, for example, a draught from a long passage had caused the spoon in the dwarf's hand to wobble slightly, the ovum had remained still. Bikki had stubbed his toe once on a crack that had widened on the stone floor. The egg had rolled in the spoon's bowl but had not fallen. Usually, quite a foot sure when it came to travelling the Mountains, smooth tunnels and passageways, once in a while, the ground shifted and cracks formed, and dwarves stumbled.

Holding spoon and Nit out in front of him, Bikki moved forward, glancing down occasionally, looking for stumbling obstacles in his path.

Kaylin was pleased with her progress, and decided to try and keep up the pace she'd set. However, that brought her to a conundrum, seeing as she almost dropped the egg earlier. It could not break, or else she would likely be disqualified. What could be done, then, to help avoid the egg from breaking too easily?

Her mind instantly went to wrappings of some sort; cotton balls for example, glued to the eggshell, or wrapping it in soft, cushiony cloth - but that would hinder the egg staying on the spoon. Surely, she could crap it around the egg AND the spoon, but she was more than sure that would be illegal. Her grey-blue eyes darted around. Or would it? She wouldn't have expected critters to be able to enter the competition. Maybe the playing field really did favor the bold?

She discarded the idea, for now. She hadn't visited Khazad-Dum before, and maybe it was better to make a decent impression - at least during the very first visit...

Kaylin was pretty sure that laying the egg in ice water for a time would also reinforce the egg, just like actually boiling it would - but she had no time for that! She had to MOVE!

Bikki and Nit

The creatures with the dexterous paws and the women were now behind Bikki and Nit. They had left them in their dust. Bikki bit his tongue more determinedly and moved forward. He imagined he could almost hear the crowd's roar as he made his way over the finish line. There were only two things now that prevented him from doing so: Nit misbehaving and rolling off the spoon, stubbing his toe on an unforeseen crack or stone, and the other races getting a sudden burst of energy (long legs and quick little feet). Well, that was three reasons, but Bikki was not counting.

Onward and forward were the keys.

He was behind. Hardly fair he thought seeing as each pace he made seemed to only make up half of the next shortest competitor. He needed to make a dash for it and see if he could make up some of the distance between him and that tall competitor that was the closest to him not that far he figured.

Working himself up to a bit of a dither Bob got up on his hind legs and put his hand carefully hovering over the egg on the spoon (not quite touching it) and did his best to catch up to second place

Bikki and Nit

Bikki's stubbed toe had not bothered him at first, but it would appear that he had hit it more forcefully than he thought, and the swelling had subsided, and now the toe throbbed uncomfortably - it was painful. As he wobbled on still ahead of the other racers, the spoon tipped and turned uneasily with Nit in the bowl. Bikki bit his tongue firmly to hold the spoon as steady as possible, but Nit appeared to be enjoying the fish-tailing, and the young dwarf swore as he glanced at the ovum that it was doing it on purpose. But he had to look for other obstacles on the race track and had no time to babysit Nit. And so, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a wad of tobacco, the chewing kind. He bit a chunk off and began to chew as he swayed forward. When he had chewed enough to get the chaw nice and wet and juice, he pulled the spoon towards him and spat right on top of Nit, hoping it would weigh the egg down.
'Oops! I missed!' he thought as he spat the rest of the ground. That would be his excuse. He didn't want it to seem like he was cheating.

He resumed his wobbling pace, a smirk upon his lips.

Bob rushed ahead in a swift scurrying motion that was hazardous at best to the health of the egg upon his spoon but he was very very much drawn by the smell off... Was that FRIED egg? and BACON? That must be what happened to the egg when they got to the end of the race. A fitting prize. He was certain his brothers would be quite upset that they had not volunteered to run the silly egg and not eat it if one got fried egg and bacon at the end of the race.

In his rush he managed to quite nicely get past one of the long legged two leggers that he was racing against and the other was... not that far away Bob realized seeing a dwarf ahead of him wibbling and wobbling and spitting. Strange ones dwarves were Bob thought as he continued to try to push on to the end of the race.

"MMHMMMMMGHHR!" Kaylin startled at the sight of a wasp passing right before her eyes and lingering around her nose, yet she dare not open her mouth for fear the demon would fly right in. Very slowly, she used her free hand to cover her ear and slowly lowered her other ear to a pulled up shoulder. One of her worst fears was that a wasp would fly into her mouth or her ears and then sting. She'd heard about people reacting to it badly and their body swelling up completely around the sting. She'd heard that, one time, a wasp had stung someone in the bck of their mouth and they hadn't been able to breathe anymore and actually died.

From a STING!

That just couldn't be her!

Then she just froze, long enough to let the wasp realize there was no food here. The demon moved on, and Kaylin was finally free to continue the race, even though she'd fallen behind dramatically.
