Maggy smiled. "I bet he'd like that. And he might even give you a cookie!" She added, then paused as she realized, with some regret, that she had left too soon, and hadn't stuck around to see if there might be cookies this time. Oh well.. she had promised Clay she would help him with the roof, and she had to get going soon or she'd be late. And she still had to stop off at her house to grab some tools, too. She couldn't do anything with these nails if she didn't have a hammer or anything to use to pound them in.

"I remember!" She assured the elf, and held out the correct number of coins, same as the last time she'd had to buy a bag of nails. She'd made sure to save out enough coins to pay for nails, knowing that she'd need them for this upcoming repair project. "I better get going, I have to catch up to.. my dad.. and Clay. That's Mr Dogwood's son, we're helping fix up his house for when he gets married." She picked up the bag of nails, carrying it carefully with both hands. "If we need anything else, I'll come back here! Bye!" She would have waved, but her hands were full, so she smiled in farewell before taking off eagerly.

Fuin watched as the little girl ran off holding the bag of nails on the way to get a hammer to help Mr.Dogwoods son with their room. She pursed her lips together and tried to remember if she'd ever met the childs father, she couldn't particularly say she had, however she seemed happy and healthy at least. And she was doing well enough that she could get new shoes so she assumed that her father must be around. She would in fact go to the cobbler tomorrow, she did actually need a new pair of shoes, and while she knew she could get an elven made pair she wasn't wanting everyone and their dog to know about the fact she'd ordered shoes.

Never mind that they would confuse the life out of any elf that got the order. They would likely confuse Mr. Dogwood as well, but at least she only had to be in Bree one weekend out of the month and not living there regularly.

Dessy 'Hart' and Amos 'Mossy' Dogwood
'Solemates' Shoe-shop, with the Woods children

Mossy had been noting down the recent observed measurements when the store window imploded. He was no longer young enough to spring into action, but he rose up calmly and took little Autumn by the hand, hoping to lead her over to sit down away from the mess. A brief glance over inspection assured the cobbler that the girl was just shocked, and seemingly not hurt.

Dessy,” he glanced around for his lodger. The tall girl had reached for Rosie on first instinct but, as Liana took up responsibility for her niece, Dessy had found her feet and scrambled to retrieve the alarmed cat. Conkers, having swiftly ascended the highest of shelves in the back of the store, was now squatting, both ears flattened, and his snake of a flaming tail beating at the shoes which were falling like dead leaves off the shelf beside him. One last attempt to reclaim the startled animal, saw the feisty feline swipe at her, so Dessy pulled a face at the creature and turned back to the children.

Liana already was tending to Rosie, Logan had fled outside to take stock of the surprise. So Dessy took up Gilbert’s hand from where Logan had left him, towing the small boy over to where she helped Wesley down from the rocking horse.

Well,Mossy managed, taking up his broom. “Best take them over to Seri,” he concluded, as though it were the only solution. The elderly man avoided all eyes as he made to sweep up the broken glass from the floor. “Best way to forget the scare is get them from the scene, get they someplace can feel safe.

He sounded somewhat as though he were having this conversation with himself, rather than with Liana, or Dessy, who took a step toward him, concerned. “Mr Dogwood ? Would you ..

No more shoes today,” the Breeman repeated, though allowed for Dessy to gently prise the broom out of his hands. “See them some place safe,” his blue eyes met the young girl’s, and for a moment she was startled. That she had never noted the vibrancy of their clear colour. He might have been handsome in his youth, she thought. Now though, he seemed .. scared. “Best shut up the shutters ..” he said, clutching at her shoulder suddenly.

With a nod, she watched him go for the lock, and exchanged a glance with Liana. The boys had left the store door open, and Mossy shuffled outside, through the pile of broken glass that he had just begun to assemble with the broom. Moments later, one of the wooden shutters from outside the window, threw darkness over that side of the shop.

We should get them out of here,Dessy agreed, setting the broom aside the counter and catching up the hands of Wesley and Gilbert with a certainty that Liana could manage Autumn and Rosie well enough. The second, and then also the third, heavy shutter dropped into place, until the only light then came from the door, beckoning them all out of the gloom. Setting the last lock to secure the exposed window frame, the cobbler retreated inside. When Dessy turned back from escorting the Woods clan onto the street, she found the shop door closed before her startled face. The sign which hung on the inside of the door window, was turned to ‘closed’. And when she moved to the handle, it was too late. Pressing a nose to the smaller door glass, Dessy watched Mossy sink into one of the seats, inside the store. Conkers scampered from his heights to claim the sudden lap, and purred with satisfaction as the aged hands rolled over his soft fur, distractedly.

Sure this was cause for concern, but not sure what she could do, with so many small folks to attend to, Dessy glanced to where the two young men (Logan and Cole) had gone to.

and then .. everybody else ..

Caught between hastening after Liana, and abandoning his milkcart to further potential thefts, Cole examined the first bottle’s debris on the street. He could at the very least ensure no further hurt was done by someone now chancing along and stepping on those dangerous shards ! So stooping to slowly pick up the pieces of broke glass with his fingers, he rose up seeking for a safe place to stow them. And was afforded a clear view, through the now gaping window frame, of the chaos caused inside the store; of Liana consoling her younger kin, who had been put at risk, all because of him. Because he had not been paying attention. She was still wearing his coat, one part of his brain realised. He was never going to get that coat back now, he sighed but moments later. He was going to have to leave town, become a hermit, never again even try to talk to ..

Logan. Liana’s brother was suddenly there on the street, asking what Cole needed, if he knew which way the thief went. Cole blinked, his hands still laid open between the two young men, palms hid by the broken glass he provided, his alibi. There was nothing he wanted to do less than chase down Bryony Spruce. Particularly after recent lectures he had tried to compel into Clay. To steer well clear of the Spruce’s.

Is anyone hurt ? he managed to make himself ask, unsure if he quite wanted to learn the answer. “I can .. I’ll clean this up,” he assured the other farmer’s son. “No point chasing after .. the thief ..” it was more than he could cope with right now, to admit he had just been managed by a woman. “I know who they are, where they live. They can wait.

'They', he'd said; rather than 'she'. Because going after the one, naturally meant invoking the threat of the both of them. “Sorry about all this,” he mentioned, as much to Logan as to Mossy Dogwood himself, who had emerged, to exploit the window shutters. The old man did not say a word before returning indoors, and before Cole could know what to do next, the entire ensemble of Woods children were herded from the shop, and the door slammed on Dessy with a start.

Liana Woods, with Autumn and Wesley Rose, and Gilbert and Rosemary Roebuck
Solemates Shoe store

Everything turned to chaos for a moment, following the smashed window. Liana picked up Rosie and looked for her other niece and nephews. With Logan gone outside, she was fully responsible for them now. At least Maggy had left already. She saw that Dessy had herded the little boys together, and Mossy had directed Autumn away from the danger. The cobbler was suggesting they ought to go to Seri's. Liana knew that Rosie had only a small scratch, so she glanced worriedly to the boys, then to Autumn, but saw no reason that they ought to go to the healer's. "I think we're-" She started to say, but before she could finish, they were all being ushered outside. They barely managed to grab their coats from the hooks before they were standing out in the snow.

Liana was still slightly shaken by the whole ordeal, and wrapped her youngest niece up tight in the coat she wore, watching as Mossy, after securing the shutters over the window, closed up the shop quite abruptly. She was a little alarmed by this, and glanced at Dessy. The other girl seemed just as baffled, and Liana guessed she would get no answers from her. "I don't think anyone's hurt enough to go to the healer," She mentioned, only to have Rosie pipe up,
"I got hurt!" She wailed, pointing to her little scratch. "It bleeeeeding!" She buried her face against Liana's shoulder.
"Yes, sweetheart, I know, it'll be alright though." She patted the little girl's back and hugged her. It wasn't worth making a trip out to the healer for a tiny little scratch. But she wasn't sure what they ought to do. Her mother was still visiting with Mrs Dogwood, and Logan had rushed out to try and help Cole. Cole... that reminded her, she still had his coat!

"We didn't even get a cookie," Gilbert whined, pouting.
"Don't worry Gilbert," Liana smiled, trying to cheer up the children. Making a decision, she nodded to herself. "We'll go get something delicious, alright?" She looked at Dessy. "Would you like to come along?" She asked, wanting to invite the other girl along, though she would understand if she had other things to do, or would rather not.

Logan Woods

Outside with Cole, joined by Liana

Assured that the thief could wait, Logan nodded slightly, acknowledging the sensibility in that. Though he wanted to do something, to act now while the adrenaline was going, he let out a slow breath and tried to calm himself. "No, no one's hurt, 'cept Rosie got a little scratch." He was glad it hadn't been worse, but still.. the idea of someone throwing something through the window like that! "Here, let me help you," He knelt down and helped pick up some of the bigger pieces of glass. "We'll need a broom for some of the smaller pieces," He commented. He'd hate for anyone to get cut by some tiny little piece of glass. And with the ice and everything, it would be all too easy for someone to slip and fall right on this spot, especially since some milk had splattered onto the ground here, it might freeze up. But there wasn't a broom, so he wasn't quite sure what to do. "Why's everyone out here?" He frowned, having sort of missed all that went on with Mossy.

Setting Rosie down, Liana helped her put on her coat and buttoned it up so she'd stay warm. "Mr Dogwood thought it might be best to close up for the day, given..well, all of this," She explained to her brother, not sure how else to explain it. A quick glance told her that Autumn had made sure the little boys had put their coats on, so she turned her attention toward the older boys, her brother and Cole. She slipped his coat off, and wrapped her own cloak around herself before stepping toward them. "I'm really sorry for all this, Cole," She spoke up as she drew nearer. "I..I guess it was my fault, if I hadn't provoked it...well, I'm sorry." She looked down, slightly awkward. "Um, we're going to go to the Pony to get something to eat. If you'd like to join us..? But I'll understand if you don't want to..." She held out his coat to him with a shy smile. "Thank you for letting me use your coat, anyway."

Seeking for some explanation in the shop door’s window, Dessy found only her own reflection and stepped back a pace despite herself, in dismay. Behind her the little gathering pitched opinions and assumptions about what quite had just happened, and she delayed for as long as possible the need to turn and face them. For she had no answers, as much as she might seem the better qualified, being lodger to the cobbler and his family. Placing a hand upon the closed barrier between them, the young woman took a deep breath and sighed, with a glancing close of eyes. She turned in sympathy as little Rosie bemoaned her little hurt. Although it seemed that the small one was not so hurt as all that, after all.

I should probably stay here,” she admitted honestly to Liana’s invitation. “Though I do not know what I might do when he ..

You should go, cheer up the little children,Cole advised his friend, and of course the pretty shepherdess. Somehow she looked even prettier, dressed in her winter cloak, and he blushed his brown eyes down toward the hairy big coat she passed back to him. “Not your fault. That woman is a ruddy nightmare and no mistaking.” He’d cussed, without thinking admitted that he’d been robbed by a woman, and sworn like a sailor in front of Liana Woods ! Oh, this day could not get any worse. Except, except he could not help his mind returning to that moment when they had been knocked down on the pavement, ducking the thrown bottle, sprinkled by the threat of flying glass …. So close they’d been for a second, her eyes wide, her perfect mouth in a promise of panting .. Catching Dessy staring at him now, the young Breeman straightened up, as though the taller girl could read his mind somehow.

I’d best get what’s left of this milk back to the farm, before Pa blows a gasket,” he mumbled, accepting the last shards from Logan gratefully. “Thanks for your help. I’ll swing by Prue’s on my way. Let her know .. well, you know. I don’t know.

Thank you Cole,Dessy managed a meek smile, even as she accepted her fate. For she had been about the cusp of accepting Liana’s invitation to go eat with them at the Prancing Pony. But how could she swan off, leaving .. things .. the way they were ? She wasn’t even sure what and when everything had changed, except that it had. And she owed so very much to the Dogwood Family, who had been so kind to take her in. She had certainly never seen Mossy act that way before. “I should go with you,” she allowed, trying not to sound so sorry as she felt to accompany Cole instead of Logan … “I’ll let you know if anything .. ” she began to concoct an excuse to come seek the Woods siblings out after the fact. But realised their mother was sat in Prue Dogwood’s pantry even this moment, enduring an endless tide of cups of tea.

We should do this again some time,” was Cole’s best attempt at a swiftly remorseful parting shot. “You know,” he held out a hand to assist Dessy climb up on the milk cart. “Not ‘this’. But ..

I know,” she agreed, and shifted her skirts into the simple seat. But all that she knew for sure was that she did not know. She did not know at all. Still the cart pulled away.
