I like your guesses, but would humbly suggest some questioning, as I personally can think of very many locations in Arda which might be considered inhospitable.

There is a question mark behind my question. Are you in the lands further north of the bay? Nearly always winter there thus cold and pretty inhospitable to live... Short summers and tundra. You said to be closer, so I am in the right direction with the whole Forodwaith area.
