Happy Tolkien Reading Day, friends! In honour of the day, I encourage you all to share a favourite quote (or two… or more…) from the works of the Professor!

"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater."

- Haldir, Lothlorien, FOTR.

I don't know about favorite quotes, but I'll share how I spent yesterday (and probably today)...

Some pretty vicious winds and weather blew through, knocking down trees and power lines in my neighborhood, so power has been out for going on 24hrs. But I managed to get to the local bookstore near me and found they had Tolkien's translations of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Beowulf available. So, I bought them both and started reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Currently still no power, but holed up at the bookstore, reading Tolkien books and perusing the internet.

I have read this story several times. As the Second Voice sounded, it always left me feeling lonely yet hopeful—such a strange little story.
"What was the matter with him?" said the Second Voice, a voice that you might have called gentle, though it was not soft - it was a voice of authority, and sounded at once hopeful and sad. "What was the matter with Niggle? His heart was in the right place." The Tolkien Reader, Leaf By Niggle

One of my favourites, Faramir's words: "War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."

Slowly Aragorn unbuckled his belt and himself set his sword upright against the wall. 'Here I set it,' he said; 'but I command you not to touch it, nor to permit any other to lay hand on it. In this elvish heath dwells the Blade that was Broken and has been made again. Telchar first wrought it in the deeps of time. Death shall come to any man that draws Elendil's sword save Elendil's heir.'

Will anyone tell this when he places a sword on the wall?
