Saw the Clash twice, but it was already 1984. Still, it was amazing. And all the old 1977 punks that you did not normally see crawled out of the woodwork for the gigs to make the atmosphere unreal.

Hate and War

Hate and war, the only things we got today
And if I close my eyes, it will not go away
You have to deal with it
It is the currency

@Ephtariat, this is dedicated to you :)

John Cooper Clarke - I Married A Monster From Outer Space

JCC was the original and greatest of the ranting punk poets. But he transcends punk because he is a genuine poet. I paste the words.

The milky way she walks around
All feet firmly off the ground
Two worlds collide, two worlds collide
Here comes the future bride
Gimme a lift to the lunar base
I wanna marry a monster from outer space

I fell in love with an alien being
Whose skin was jelly – whose teeth were green
She had the big bug eyes and the death-ray glare
Feet like water wings – purple hair
I was over the moon – I asked her back to my place
Then I married the monster – from outer space

The days were numbered – the nights were spent
In a rent free furnished oxygen tent
When a cyborg chef served up moon beams
Done super rapid on a laser beam
I needed nutrition to keep up the pace
When I married the monster from outer space

We walked out – tentacle in hand
You could sense that the earthlings would not understand
They’d go.. nudge nudge …when we got off the bus
Saying it’s extra-terrestial – not like us
And it’s bad enough with another race
But fredegar me… a monster …from outer space

In a cybernetic fit of rage
She pissed off to another age
She lives in 1999
With her new boyfriend – a blob of slime
Each time I see her translucent face
I remember the monster from outer space
Eat earth. Dig deep. Drink water.

@Hill Ever heard of this chap called Billy Idol? We used to share barrels of beer in our 20s... :headbang:

Billy Idol - White Wedding (Pts. 1 & 2)

Hey little sister, what have you done?
Hey little sister, who's the only one?
Hey little sister, who's your superman?
Hey little sister, who's the one you want?
Hey little sister, shotgun!
It's a nice day to start again
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again
Hey little sister, who is it you're with?
Hey little sister, what's your vice or wish?
Hey little sister, shotgun, oh yeah
Hey little sister, who's your superman?
Hey little sister, shotgun!
It's a nice day to start again
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again
Pick it up!
Take me back home, yeah
Hey little sister, what have you done?
Hey little sister, who's the only one?
I've been away for so long
I've been away for so long
I let you go for so long
It's a nice day to start again
Come on it's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again
There is nothing fair in this world
There is nothing safe in this world
And there's nothing sure in this world
And there's nothing pure in this world
Look for something left in this world start again!
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again
It's a nice day to start again
It's a nice day to start again

Is this really official plaza policy on this thread? We have a danger of me and @Ephtariat quoting entire songs at each other and totally spamming the thread.

I refer you to the thread rules (created specifically for roleplaying but which may apply more widely than this) which I quote here:
Outside of the Plaza General Rules and the previous sections of this Code of Conduct, it is up to threadrunners to set and enforce rules in their own threads.
So, spam away!

Did my Dungeon Synth lecture this past Friday. It was fun, an online lecture in which I talked to (mostly) conservative old ladies about black metal, Lovecraft, Tolkien, and dungeon synth.
The playlist for the lecture was:
The Quest of Iranon - Voormithadreth
Greener Pastures - Hole Dweller
Argonath - Argonath
Deathbard - Gifts of Youth
Sysyphus - Auf der Bergstraße
Nan Morlith - Âdhûn II
Tales Under the Oak - Fern Flower
Morrowdim - The Verdant Court

I have come to the conclusion that events of the last few years - Covid, catastrophe, war - have distracted me from an ordinary and natural mid-life crisis, which has slipped on without me noticing. As from today, I am going to be kinder to myself, accepting of the aches and pains and natural roundings of age.

That Neo Odin proved a good choice as the background for my 3-year-old as we went to sleep. Aged 2 and they all like heavy metal or even the more melodious punk tracks, but by now the brains have developed a little and I need to find smoother tunes. (The deal is, child watches some netflix animation trash but with volume off while i listen to something and close my eyes.)

The Ruts - West One (shine on me)

Have not previously put The Ruts on this thread. Their music is a tad monotonous and after a few tracks always leaves me with a headache. And yet they had something, and it demands total respect. This song blends a classic expression of the anger, bitterness, and desperation at the core of punk with an almost transcendent vibe and vision shining out of traffic islands.

Tam Lin - Fairport Convention

Hi @Ephtariat, what can you say about this song fron the Scottish borders? It does not seem quite to fit the categories you have mentioned so far.

"I forbid you maidens all that wear gold in your hair
To travel to Carter Hall for young Tam Lin is there
None that go by Carter Hall but they leave him a pledge
Either their mantles of green or else their maidenhead"
Janet tied her kirtle green a bit above her knee
And she's gone to Carter Hall as fast as go can she
She'd not pulled a double rose, a rose but only two
When up there came young Tam Lin says "Lady, pull no more"
"And why come you to Carter Hall without command from me?"
"I'll come and go", young Janet said, "and ask no leave of thee"
Janet tied her kirtle green a bit above her knee
And she's gone to her father as fast as go can she
Well, up then spoke her father dear and he spoke meek and mild
"Oh, and alas, Janet, " he said, "I think you go with child"
"Well, if that be so, " Janet said, "myself shall bear the blame
There's not a knight in all your hall shall get the baby's name
For if my love were an earthly knight as he is an elfin grey
I'd not change my own true love for any knight you have"
Janet tied her kirtle green a bit above her knee
And she's gone to Carter Hall as fast as go can she
"Oh, tell to me, Tam Lin, " she said, "why came you here to dwell?"
"The Queen of Faeries caught me when from my horse I fell
And at the end of seven years she pays a tithe to hell
I so fair and full of flesh and feared it be myself
But tonight is Hallowe'en and the faery folk ride
Those that would their true love win at Miles Cross they must buy
So first let past the horses black and then let past the brown
Quickly run to the white steed and pull the rider down
For I'll ride on the white steed, the nearest to the town
For I was an earthly knight, they give me that renown
Oh, they will turn me in your arms to a newt or a snake
But hold me tight and fear not, I am your baby's father
And they will turn me in your arms into a lion bold
But hold me tight and fear not and you will love your child
And they will turn me in your arms into a naked knight
But cloak me in your mantle and keep me out of sight"
In the middle of the night she heard the bridle ring
She heeded what he did say and young Tam Lin did win
Then up spoke the Faery Queen, an angry queen was she
Woe betide her ?ill-fought? face, an ill death may she die
"Oh, had I known, Tam Lin, " she said, "what this knight I did see
I have looked him in the eyes and turned him to a tree"
Eat earth. Dig deep. Drink water.

The Meteors - I Don't Worry About It

@Ephtariat - i just meant: what are the motifs in 'Tam Lin'? Is this a fairy-mistress story or something else?

@Chrysophylax Dives It's a fairy lover story. Fairy lovers often trick women into sex or even abduct them. Sir Orfeo is the obvious Tolkien-related example.

Thank you, @Ephtariat. I must confess I am not sure I understand the song. I had thought that Tam Lin was a fairy, but now I wonder if Tam Lin is a mortal knight escaping the Queen of Fairie?

Velvet Underground - Lady Godiva's Operation

@Ephtariat, although we have admin permission to spam this thread, I think it might upset others and perhaps we should reconvene in Undertowers? What all this is leading me to is a basic question, on which I would very much like to hear your opinion: If in the fairy-stories the Elf-lover can be either male or female, why does Tolkien only ever go with female-Elves wedding male-mortal lovers? Is there something about human-women and Elf-men that gives him the heebee-jeebies?
