War Of The Dwarves And The Orcs - Early Morning Scrimmage

And of old it was not darksome, but full of light and splendour, as is still remembered in our songs.

She saw her least favourite dwarf out of the corner of her eye as she swept on the dwarf that the orc had been facing. Indeed she would help the orc out once more making it so that she had to deal with beak and claw and keep her from the orcs back. Or front. She honestly didn't care enough about the orc enough to actually note where the dwarf was attacking her current ally in the destruction of these dwarves. She flicked her wings into the face of the dwarf that she'd harried before to put her back in her place.

What a strange feeling. It was like something took her over momentarily, something like a past life resurfacing and taking control. She shook it off (losing a single, ebony feather in the process), blinked a few times, then reassessed her situation. The dwarves still outnumbered her and her ally (yes, she could count) but the dwarves were on the defensive now. All they could do was sing and recover now as she and the orc pressed their attack.

The Crebian was back in force now and despite being outnumbered still four-to-one the presence of the flying ally encouraged the orc to push further forward. With his cruel barb gripped in both hands, Bolrag moved, brandishing his weapon wildly to prevent any of the dwarves from getting too close. He struck out at the closest dwarf in front of him hoping that they would be sufficiently distracted by their flying opponent to be caught unawares.

They made a decent team, orc and craban. The likelihood of turning on each other was strong once the dwarves were dead, but that could be worked out later. Rhafna wanted something shiny and something meaty, the orc could have all the weapons and armor he could scavenge. But there was a time and place to think about these things and now was not it. Rhafna, moving around the dwarf's head swiftly to avoid the orc's swinging attack, grabbed two talonfuls of dwarven skin and ripped.

Indeed they worked well as a team and she'd gotten a bit of her rage and malice out on the one dwarf that had tormented her for many months. For now though they were picking the dwarves off one at a time tormenting them. She circled about the dwarfs head once more skin in her feet this time her beak was what was attacking and she snapped at an eye doing her best so that he wouldn't be able to see when Bolrag finally attacked again. She took to the air a bit twisting in the air avoiding an attack from the dwarf as she got out of the orcs way.

Velm raised her axe and bought it down on the orc. The bird had become like a creature possessed, two crows in one. It was no use attempting to strike it; it doubled up and returned. But the orc was going to die if she spent her last breath killing it. Unless, of course, it became like the bird and had four arms, two heads and two pointed spears. The dwarves were under attack. But the chant remained the same through the blood and the tears.

The dwarves were ganging up on him now. Apparently they had realized the futility in attacking the cerbian who was darting in and out of combat with impunity. The orc, however, was spilling blood from several wounds and his left eye was half swollen shut. But he was not out of the fight yet and the dwarf in front of him was looking in a poor state and Bolrag was going to take his chance now to get one more of the dastardly dwarves out of the picture. He moved forward slowly, thrusting his wicked spear forward at the dwarf as he went.

There were so many dwarves still, so many beards, so many axes, so many eyeballs just righty for the plucking. Rhafna had been working and fighting and killing all day, she was hungry and she deserved a snack! The orc was getting surrounded by the little hairy beardlings but he seemed to be handling himself quite well. Orcs were better fighters than many gave them credit for, they were vicious, savage, and resourceful; the craban knew he would be fine whilst she dined on eyeball. She CAWED then divebombed the nearest dwarf, he was on his last legs, and now, down to one juicy eye as she pecked and plucked and gulped it down.

Birds had always been particularly irritating to Bolrag, what with the whole flying thing, what gave them right? he thought. But his was beginning to come around on birds, maybe they weren't all that bad after all. Or at least this particular one seemed to be helpful, for now. The bird swooped down and attacked the nearly dead dwarf and Bolrag, knowing this was his opportunity, struck with his spear, lashing out forward impaling the dwarf right as his eye had been plucked out by the bird. If Bolrag had any empathy, which of course he didn't, he might have felt bad for the dwarf.

Velm swung her axe. Blood seeped from some of the scabs caused by the wounds the bird had inflicted, and tears flowed as she heard Dunabar's cries of rage, frustration and pain. Her thoughts went out to him as she fought on, hoping he reached the Makers Halls where she would once again
see him.

Rhafna was feeling good about herself. She was doing alright. Yeah, things could always be better, but she was trying to be more mindful of herself and her needs. Every now and then, even a craban with as many years as she needed to take some me time. That eyeball hit the spot, it was tangy and umami with just a hint of sour. It was nothing like Dunlander eyes or goblin or Rohir, it was quite tasty. She wanted another, and why shouldn't she treat herself? There were still live dwarves about too, it was as if the corvid gods wanted her to feast. Who was she to argue with gods?

Velm batted the bird away with the side of her axe - but had she? There were two birds now. Was this one she swatted the same evil creature that had been plaguing the dwarves from the start, or was it the evil Crebian's doppelgänger? It pecked just as hard. Who knew. All she knew was that there was still an orc in their midst.

Another dwarf down and Bolrag laughed wickedly. There were only three left, by his count, and he was going to take another one with him if he could help it at all. The bird was providing good distraction, however, the dwarves seem to have their sights back on the target in front of them (him) rather than the enemy in the sky. Bolrag spat in the direction of the female dwarf who was accosting him but decided to strike out at a weaker looking dwarf.

Sweat made her beard stiff in the cold - she was hitting the orc for all it is worth exerting much energy. The rotter was killing her kin. If she could pulverize the orc into the ground, she would. But this would be a more extended battle and not so easy. The key was to keep at it. Swing the axe, make it cut, then bring it around and start again.

The battle was suddenly moving faster than she'd anticipated. The orc and the dwarves were engaged in close hand to hand combat, the orc doing a good job of holding off the stronger dwarf whilst attack the weaker one. It was a sign that Rhafna needed to be working just as fast. If the orc fell to either of the stone lovers, they would not take long before they thought to take on her. As bold and strong and power as she was, she was still no match for the fury of three dwarves at once. She dove at the lead dwarf woman, beak wide open to take a piece of her beard.

Crust covered her left nostril, and she slipped on a small patch of icy sludge. The bird struck at her again. With a swat of her axe, she had it off her case for the now. She didn't like these distractions; the bird had taken a piece of her beard. The orc would get wise and start hitting back harder. And the bird was gaining ground again, thinking it was the goddamn ALL MIGHTY or something. Velm swung her axe at the orc again.

The Dwarf that continued to pester him was a fair bit tougher than her kin and Bolrag was determined to pick off the weaker members first. He still had some fight left in him even as Velm threw all of her fury at the orc. Bolrag cursed his fate as he was left surrounded now by three dwarves with only one of them looking tender and close to death. There wasn't much else for it now than to fight to the bitter end. The return of the bird made for a small amount of relief for Bolrag although he still appeared to be their primary target. Wounds and gashes were now increasing on the poor orc who had suffered several of Velm's blows. He did not relent and continued to press the weaker remaining dwarf.

CAw-CAW CAWCAW Wow, things were really moving now. The battle had lulled for so long it had become a trance, a perfunctory action and reaction. What had happened to make the battle so violent and fierce all of the sudden? She supposed it didn't really matter because in the end, bloodshed was what she needed. She was a carrion bird after all and a girl's gotta eat. The orc was still moving swiftly between the two dwarves, giving the weaker one as much as he could handle before he started slipping. It left him open to attacks from the dwarfette though (no that wasn't right) and Rhafna needed to have his back here. She swooped again, flapping her wings hard in the woman's face to distract her.

The swooping of the bird acted as the perfect distraction to give the orc some space. The two remaining female dwarves were going to be a tough nut to crack but if he could at least get the sniveling male dwarf out of the way he might have a better chance of survival. Realistically, he realized, he didn't have much of a chance of survival at all but the will to live is strong, even in orcs, and any chance to extend his life by even a few more minutes was worth it, especially if he could take a few more dwarves with him still.

The bird's wings swooshed in her face. The tip of a black feather, sharp as a barb, caught the dwarf's crusty nostril and tore a sizeable piece of skin from her nose. She showered the snow with a bloody sneeze. Wiping her injured nose, she shied the bird away again then., Velm swung her axe at the orc.

The dwarf was still after the orcish ally that Rhafna had made, that would not stand so with that she swooped again a bloody injured nose a good warning for the last attack that she had made before but it hadn't deterred the dwarf no she would have to go in far more violently it seemed not that she hadn't fought with this dwarf for long hours before - it was time if anything for a renewed attack on her. With that Rhafna flew a tight circle about the orcs head just avoiding a spray of bloody mist from the dwarf and tried to catch at her lip to tear it off with her beak.

Bolrag couldn’t seem to catch a break. He was teetering back and forth between being on the offense and defense. He was slowly cornering the remaining male dwarf but it appeared he had earned the ire of the most dangerous dwarf who was making Bolrag pay for every wound he inflicted on her allies. Not that it was stopping Bolrag from seeking the blood he desired.

Blood! Blood! Bloodbloodblood! Blood was a lovely thing, when it was hot and sticky, it accented her black feathers wonderfully. And if she found it when it was not hot and sticky, it was tasty and tangy. There was so much carnage here, so much blood, so many bodies. Rhafna could have had her pick of corpses. She could gorge on dead meat from now until the next turn of the moon. Still, something in her wanted more. More blood, more carnage, more violence. The darkness inside the craban wasn't satisfied, it would never be satisfied until everyone and everything was dead and world was naught but a field of dead with forest of impales and lakes of rotting corpses!

Double trouble, thought Velm as the crow attack not once but twice. She had no difficulty warding it off for now, but soon the onset of two swoops in succession would take their toll. The sounds of her dying kin pushed her on. She wiped blood and snot from her nose and hefted her axe - a few of the scabs on her hands had cracked, and blood covered them, but they were still strong enough to bring the axe down on the orc.

Velm's axe continued to find a home in Bolrag's tough skin which was turning out to be not as tough as he needed for he bled freely from multiple wounds now. But it was not enough to bring the orc down, he was still attacking wildly with his spear and trying his best to ignore the Dwarves as they slowly began to overwhelm him. There was still one of the weaker dwarves left even if the two others, especially Velm who did not seem to want to let Bolrag survive, were around to likely deprive Bolrag of his remaining skin. He didn't care, maybe the bird would take the dwarves down eventually. He grimaced and struck out again at the weaker dwarf.

So far the balance was working, the orc (Rhafna was going to have to learn his name at some point) was doing very well attacking the dwarf, nearly cutting him in half now and while he was busy, the craban was covering his exposed flank (thankfully that was not in the literal sense or this would be a very different kind of maneuver) by constantly attack the female dwarf, doing just enough to keep her off balance so she couldn't gain too great an advantage on the orc. Soon, the dwarf he was fighting would wear down and leave himself exposed for a final, deadly strike and both of them would take on the leader.

What had long been a stalemate between the bird and the eldest dwarf was turning into an unexpected tag-team effort between the orc and the Crebian. Not a common pair, it's true, but an allegiance of continence and one that had, so far, managed to break the stalemate. Bolrag did not get his hopes up though for he was still out numbered and out matched and, even should the dwarves be defeated, he wondered at what his fate would be when their alliance of convenience came to a sudden end. These were problems for future-Bolrag and, as a rule, Bolrag didn't concern himself much with that poor sod. With the Crebian distracting the lead dwarf, Bolrag was free to cruelly pursue the last remaining male dwarf.

Velm could hear Fali behind her. She was singing in a low voice. Fali, most likely, would be next to be beaten, pecked and killed by the Crebian and its counterpart. It was hard to imagine that all the dwarves she fought with were now dead. And it was even harder to imagine a Crebian sitting on the Mountainside (like a King (or Queen)) - shat covering its beautiful rock face.

She swept an eye and a wing over the dwarf that the orc was fighting against, indeed he was weakening and soon it would be her most despised foes on the battlefield left. Fortunately she was already keeping the one off balance as it were. Another strong stroke of her wings and she had turned from assessing how the orc was doing to keeping the dwarf that she disliked so much from easily over powering the orc. She struck swiftly with taloned toes reaching in to scratch and snatch at whatever they could at the dwarfs face.

The end was drawing nigh for the orc as he had drawn the ire of the dwarves who were, at this point, focusing their attentions on him rather than the flying Crebian, having judged, correctly, that Bolrag was likely the weakest link. He would make them pay, though, for their efforts as he was certain he'd be able to bring down at least one more dwarf with him before he was taken low himself. And so with self-imposed grit and determined to make his enemy pay for even considering to fight back, Bolrag thrust forward his spear attacking the now weakening dwarf in front of him.

The Crebian swooped down on Velm with its menacing black wings. It unsettled her but not enough to prevent her from striking at the orc. Damn the orc. And the bird. Before her eyes, Donlad lay injured. She threw herself across her fellow dwarf, protecting him with her own body for now. But she would have to rise eventually to hit the orc again. A slight reprise was all they had. She whispered their secret words of ease into Donlad's ear as the voice of Fali could be heard above his sighs of pain.

Where the dwarf threw herself at her companion to protect him from the orc the crow swooped into follow making sure to keep her feeling every bit of pain that she could. Rhafna had no need to dog the orcs sword for they worked together well for the moment at least as another dwarf edged ever closer to death now. Soon, it would be only the two dwarves that the Crebain hated so and she let out a glorious little croak of a caw at the thought of her and the orc ending them.

Velm felt the swoop of the bird upon her and rolled herself and Donlad away. But not fast enough. She felt the Crebian's claws scrape her back. She had felt worst, mind you, and was quick to get on her knees and swing at the orc.
'Bleed you miserable creature!' she rumbled into the orc's face.
Sweat clung to her beard in icy crystals, tinkling as she swung her axe, for the weather had become bitterly cold again. She then quickly fell to protect Donlad once more.

Bolrag had let his guard down only for a moment and he was paying for it dearly. The axe came in at a dangerous angle and tore a gash in the side of Bolrag's left arm, the forward arm on his spear. Orcs did not cry but Bolrag let out a wail of agony and anger. The dwarf rumbled something but the ringing in his ears from the blow was drowning out the sounds around him. He was surrounded by dwarves, but several of them were dead and some of them by his own hand. Bolrag was not out of the fight yet and he lashed back at the weakest dwarf cruelly. Hoping that the Crebian would continue to wreak as much havoc as possible on the two stronger dwarves.

The orc took a pretty decent hit, and Rhafna regarded him with a keen eye for a moment as she circled about the dwarf she'd decided to torment keeping herself just out of striking range. When she saw him recover and lash out at the dwarf he was working on killing she swooped down as pecking hard at the dwarfs back, hoping to keep her from doing too much more damage to her current ally. The two of them working together were bringing these dwarves to their knees, in some cases, quite literally.

Velm took the worst blow delivered by the orc, but Donlad was struck and weakened. Meanwhile, the bird was swooping in again, gashing her back. It was a no-win situation for Donlad as Velm had to ward off both attackers. She again whispered words of ease into the dwarf's ear and then stood with feet apart and swung her axe at the orc.

Bolrag’s vision was blurring and becoming more like a tunnel. He could only focus on one dwarf at a time as he swing his spear around like a trapped animal desperate to fight to the bitter end. The axes of the dwarves bit into his thick orc hide in glancing blows as Bolrag struggled to keep three of them at distance with his spear, he would not be able to hold them off for long but if he could take one more dwarf with him then it would be worth it reasoned the orc.

Blows were coming swift and hard, mostly between the orc and the dwarves. Rhafna was for her part landing her own blows and thus far had managed to avoid any further attempts at her life. At least for now. The orc was doing a good job of fending off three dwarves with his one stick, and soon one of the three would be down and then it would be two dwarves vs... one orc and one crebain. Hardly a fair fight Rhafna thought with how many dwarves she'd managed to kill on her own but then what did she actually care about a fair fight? Not a single warg tit that was for certain... With that she swooped and pecked at Velms face trying to shush those whispers that were so annoying

The world was cruel. Velm held Donlad as his breath became more shallow. Struck by the orc again, he lost much blood. The bird was persistent, not allowing her to protect Donlad better. She wondered what these creatures, a foul, dirty orc and a flesh-eating bird knew of kinship. Probably nothing. Tears now mingled with the ice on her beard as she swung at the orc with all he might.

It was a good thing that the orc did not have any emotions of empathy because the sight before him of the dwarves, who so clearly had a strong bond, were fighting and dying together would have made him horribly. But fortunately for Bolrag, he did not care much, quite the opposite, in fact, and the sight of the dwarves distress over their dying kin did nothing other than to spur him forward. He hadn't put much thought into what would happen, in the end, should he survive until it came but a single dwarf, the bird, and himself. He would cross that bridge if he managed to survive long enough to do so. Bolrag turned his sights to the two female dwarves. His previous attacks on the last remaining male dwarf had been death blows, the dwarf would bleed out soon unless he received immediate assistance and so all Bolrag had to do was keep the other dwarves distracted.

Velm swung and hacked and hoped every stoke cut the orc deep and left him bleeding and scared. She could no longer protect Donlad. His time had come. He barely breathed now. Finding her courage to go from his side for a time, she made her way to the barricade and Fali. They would fight this orc together and avenge their kin if they could; and deliver Donlad's body to a safe place away from pecking vultures.

An evil grin came across the orc's face as he heard the last breath of the dwarf (Donald) and spared a glance as the dwarf closed his eyes and fell to darkness. A wicked slash from Velm came at him and regained his attention. There were only two dwarves left and still the orc stood even if it was a tenuous stand at best. The bird flew over head but appeared not to be in the immediate vicinity. Bolrag began to quietly wonder if he would be able to take down yet another dwarf before his inevitable end. Bolrag? More like Balrog! He thought and triumphantly lashed out with his spear again, ignoring the uncountable wounds which were now building across Bolrag's body.

The orc and the dwarfs traded a few blows before finally the third of the dwarves fell as he attacked one last time with his spear. She let out an encouraging caw to her brethren who descended upon the fresh kill like ravenous wolves despite being crows before she attacked the stronger of the two dwarves yet again reminding her that indeed she still had foes to contend with and that she had not given up on bringing that particular dwarf down as she regrouped with the other dwarf behind their meagre barricade that was meant to keep foes on foot out. She had no such restrictions as she lit over the barricade and gave her a good strong smack with her wings.

Like a pale scimitar, the moon hung low in the sky as dawn approached. The fight continues with Donlad having perished in the night. Velm warmed her hands by the fire. She and Fali had managed to carry the body of Donlad to safety even as the bird flutters its black wings at their back, knocking the breath out of Velm. And so, Fali picked up her axe and went out to kill the orc. Velm kept her ears and eyes alert for the Crebian.

Indeed it seemed the death of their comrade spurred the other dwarf into action she however had not lost the crebain and the fire beaconed her nearer giving away the dwarfs position and as if she'd blinked she was in the hidden space that the dwarves seemed to think would shade the light of the fire. No her eyes were sharp and she had a feeling that the orc ally she had would be able to see just as well as she dove once again for the stronger of the two dwarves pecking at her viciously. She hoped the orc would hold his ground or else she'd need to go and help him with the weaker of the two.

One more dead dwarf to add to the tally. But the two remaining dwarves had acquired some second wind and were now both attacking the orc. The crebian was keeping the stronger of the two dwarves at bay but suddenly the singing dwarf decided that Bolrag would be her next target. Bolrag was getting tired now and he knew that soon he may succumb to his wounds. But he was not down for the count yet! If the crebian could peck down the other while the orc stood his ground maybe he would survive a bit longer. It seemed unlikely.

She wheeled herself back up into the air to check on her companion and found him facing down the other dwarf. Even in the darkness of the night she could tell he was wounded. She and her kind made short meals of the dead but he was not there yet and so far he seemed to be trading blows back and forth leaving her the opportunity to wear at the dwarf she'd been working on this far.

Perhaps the team of orc and crebian would reign supreme? Bolrag hesitated to think. It was down to four left, the two dwarves, the bird, and himself. Bolrag was clearly in the worst condition of them all, but the singing dwarf seemed not too far off from himself and the bird seemed to have such an advantage, that being flight, over the remaining combatants. Bolrag had to return his focus as the two dwarves where now focused on him and he had to block the blows of their axes carefully with his spear.

Indeed the orc was doing fairly well over all working hard on scrambling back from his precarious position fighting a stronger healthier opponent. Rhafna did not worry about him now as she could see that he was handling himself well she could focus in on the stronger of the two dwarves. She circled her head avoiding weapon and flame and pecking violently at the dwarfs face wearing down her health. She was certain her and the orcs victory would be a mere eventuality.

The bird and the orc had the two dwarves on the back foot now. The orc had both of them in front of him now rather than being flanked which put him in a much better position although he was still at a disadvantage facing two versus one. If it was not for the assistance of the bird it would not have ended well for Bolrag. But as it stood the two of them appeared to have the advantage over the two dwarves and Bolrag needed no further encouragement to press the attack. He lunged his spear at the weaker dwarf.
