War Of The Dwarves And The Orcs - Early Morning Scrimmage

And of old it was not darksome, but full of light and splendour, as is still remembered in our songs.

Indeed patience had proven her ally and while they were not quite back at where they had been when she had finally squared off against the dwarf in questions she was well back on her way as Rhafna delivered a second harsh peck before the dwarf could land a blow on her, a feather for a finger. Or something like that Rhafna thought with a low rumbling caw of a chortle.

Velm was back behind the barricade. Donlad and Fali, two of the stronger dwarves, were hunched down beside her. The other dwarves had recuperated and made their way back to the battle. She had a stick and was doing some quick calculations in the dirt. As far as they could tell, they were outnumbering their enemies. Their strength was the greatest at this point in the battle. Yet, the bird had a more strategic advantage, its strength alone greater because it had wings. No matter how low it flew and was struck, up, it went, soaring out of reach of axe and bow. Scratching their chins beneath their dirty, tattered beards, exhausted and perplexed, they looked each other in the eyes and decided. After all, a single bird could not take over the whole Mountain, could it?
'One more attempt for the now,' said Velm.
As she snuck out of the barricade, she was suddenly struck hard by the bird. She fell forward but quickly got to her feet, and with a flash of hard steel, swung her axe.

The dwarf popped up again drawing something, indeed they seemed to be scratching at the dirt and she wheeled overhead observing their plan for it was not that difficult to ascertain really. She swooped down absolutely intent on taking over the whole mountain. After all birds were the descendants of Dinosaurs and Dinosaurs are lizards and lizards are dragons. Therefore in some strange universe crows are in fact the distant relations of dragons.

Up went Velm's axe with a mighty swing. Donlad had sharpened her axe as they calculated their chances. Its edge gleamed coldly, uncaringly, determinedly. She would keep on swinging, she decided.

The dwarf swung and she twisted in the air folding one wing and flapping the other avoiding any real damage from the axe, the trick to actually hurting the crow with an axe would be actually managing to hit her in a meaningful way instead of grazing across her feathers like the wind. Of course in order to not actually get hurt she was also having to sacrifice her own damage a bit in order to keep herself from being wounded.

The battle dance continued. The axe swings the bird strikes. At this point, the sharp axe wasn't doing much damage as it was only shaving the bird's feathers. But maybe, if the wings were shaved enough, the damn bird would find it hard to fly. Then, they would be on level ground.

Rhafna flipped through the air avoiding the axe swing with ease this one wasn't even close the dwarf clearly just thought it was and she gave a flap of her mighty black wings that had carried her thus far and with a swift jab of her beak put the dwarf back in their place for another round of dodge the axe while nothing else happens.

The bird must think that its jabs were effective. But they were not. It was the stench of rotten meat that emanated from the Crebain when it flapped its wings that knocked the dwarf off her feet. The creature was, after all, a scavenger who fed on carrion and other things. Mind you, the reek did not keep her down for long, and before one could say crow's feet, Velm was up, swinging her axe again.

Perhaps it was a blessing that the crow could not smell for she had no problems with her own smell or the stench of unwashed dwarves or orcs. How could she? She'd never be able to eat if she found strong smells bothering her, she watched the dwarf fall and rise just like it's axe did now. She knew very well she wasn't hurting the dwarf overly just like the dwarf was not hurting her.

Dodging the bird again, Velm was scathed slightly by its peck and stench. She raised her axe for the next swing as a low voice by the barricade (the remaining dwarves having the time to remove the dead bodies and build a proper wall) came to her ears. It was Donlad. He was singing. It encouraged Velm, and her swing was inspiring to say the least.

Oh lords the singing had started again. Quite annoying, and it quite made her want to murder the dwarves honestly the one note was always off it seemed. Either that or the one dwarf couldn't harmonize hard to tell really. It annoyed her so much she almost missed the fact she made a murder pun as a crow. She cawed her pun to the other crows to mock the dwarves in their own language.

The bird seemed agitated. As if, for some reason, the song that was coming from the barricade vexed it. Velm enjoyed Donlad's piece very much. He had an incredible singing voice. But apparently, the bird did not. It called out in a loud pitch cawing sound. Velm hefted her axe, but before she swung it at the vocal bird, who grazed her with its wings doing minor damage, she called in the direction of the dwarves.
'Let's hear that song again, Donlad!'

And with the singing of the song again a chorus of crows began to call over the dwarfs voice drowning him out entirely with their cacophony of noise drowning out the singing for Rhafna's ears. Perhaps the dwarf could still hear it but Rhafna was 'singing' with her kin as she summersaulted through the air avoiding the axe that swung and flung her wing towards the face of the dwarf.

Fali took up the song. Her voice was deep but not like Donlad's. It had a dark timber but a certain lilt. It carried over the air reaching Velm's ear, muffling the noise of the clowns somersaulting and cawing in the air. The dwarven song once more encouraged her as she swung her axe at the crow.

She ducked the axe with a slight dive ducking under the swinging axe like it was no more difficult to avoid than a branch of a tree. The dwarves were still singing annoyingly enough and Rhafna's kin were still singing loudly drowning out the dwarven voices from the crows ears as she swooped past the dwarf dangerously close in an attempt to make her flinch or falter in her swinging.

As the crow attempted to distract Velm and cause her to make a mistake, up came Fali suddenly with axe swinging. She jumped up using her powerful legs. She was stout like all her kin, yet quick-footed. For she had just come of age and was full of vigour. She sang as she swung and then quickly glanced at Velm, her eyes tearing. In silent acquiescence, Velm nodded her head.

Ahhh There was another dwarf attacking her now and she found her opening and went for it against the dwarf that had harmed her so much before. No there would be no mercy from the bird as Fali struck at her and she in turn struck Velm her beak snapping at soft flesh exposed through so much armor. Indeed each strike that the dwarf would land on her would be a blow against her kin more so than against the bird.

The bird hit Velm, and a piece of Fali's heart burst. She knew that Velm had agreed to this sacrifice, yet, it was wringing the other dwarves to bits. Sobs echoed from the barricade, and tears watered the words to the dwarven battle song. Fali raised her axe and used it as a hammer, swinging at the bird before it flew. She then knelt by Velm and helped her to her feet.

Indeed the bird barely needed to change its flight. A tilt of the tail and the blunt instrument passed through the feathers of her wing's harmlessly. She flapped her wings and struck at Velma face with her clawed feet before passing by once more.

Velm saw the bird's claws come down and raised her arm to protect her face, and got a minor cut to her arm. Fali was quick enough to hit the bird again before it ascended. Giman keeps the battle song alive by singing it in his low dwarven voice.

Another swing and another dodge where the hammer? Axe? She wasn't entirely sure what it was that Velm was swinging just that it missed her, and struck Velm as she perched cheekily on top of the other dwarfs helm so that perhaps this Fali would crack the other dwarf right on her head when she took another swing.

The snow had begun. The wind too. It was blustery on the battlefield. The bird bore down on Velm, but again she was able to ward off the force of the blow from the bird and receive only a minor injury. Fali felt a flutter of air movement above her head and quickly swat at it with the flat side of her axe. The bird may have sharp claws and a crooked beak but, it was a bird after all, and the chances of it perching on the top of a living dwarf's head were nil.

The snow was thigh high around the two dwarves that stood on the battlefield. It had fallen steadily all day. Donlad, Giman and Dunabar had packed the snow around the barricade, and it hung over (they had gathered all the bows and swords and used them as overhanging beams), sheltering them from the snow. The crows had been black specks in the air during the storm. But the evil one got a smack from Fali's axe for getting too close to Velm. Giman sang; the words carried over the wind.

More snow and blustering winds blew across the terrain. Visibility was nil. Velm and Fali had a chance ( as the Crebian was off searching for dead, frozen flesh, they assumed) to warm themselves by the fire that was burning low in the barricade. Then, Fali stood on the field once more, looking at the wintery scene. She thought she felt a change in the air current above her. Dashing up an incline made by the barricade, which had hardened from the cold outside and the heat inside, she swung her axe as she rose. If the bird was above her in the blowing snow, she hoped she had grazed its feather at least. The dwarves by the fire kept up their battle song.

Freezing rain fell, and then the temperature rose to cause a heavy fog to cover the valley. Fali stood on the embankment of the barricade with her beard dripping wet and her toes cold in her heavy boots. There were far-off cries of crows in the distance. She swung her axe high above her head, imagining she heard the flap of wings and, if so, hoping she shaved a few feathers off the damnable bird.

Hoar frost clung to Fali's beard. The temperature had suddenly dropped to freezing conditions. All the other dwarves were warm, and snug in the barricade, but Fali stood guard. The bird seems to have become a ghost in the fog and wintery mist. But she kept her axe swinging above her with the hopes of it hitting the bird if it should pass. The sound of the ice tinkling off her beard melded with the voices of the dwarves in Fali's ears.

The sun shone in the azure winter sky. It made the undisturbed snow appear like a sheet of tiny crystals across the valley. But, it did not warm the earth as the temperatures were the deepest cold. After the long battle, the dwarves spent their time around the fire, resting and mending, which was to their advantage. The Crebian was nowhere in sight. A few smaller crows could be seen in the distance, most likely spending their day pecking at the frozen bodies of the dead, but the dark wings of the evil bird had not descended on the dwarves in days. They kept up their song to make the days pass.

Dunabar was singing, as deep and as loud as he could, following the chant of the dwarves. Fali was having all of the fun, he thought, as he picked out a shortbow and quiver of arrows -- they were fighting flying things after all. He made his way towards the end of the barricade and popped his head out " 'lo Fali!' he called and the frozen wind swept across his beard. Dunabar caught an arrow in his bow string and squinted an eye, looking out for the bird. He loosed an arrow in the snowy sky, hoping it might disturb the crows and bring back the larger beast.

Fali heard Dunabar and saw his stiff (from the wind) beard poke out of the hideout, and an arrow fly through the air. She hand-signal her approval and turned back to look at the frosted landscape. The crows were feasting on, but no sign of the big bad bird could she see. She suddenly realized that there was still an orc (Bolrag) with a nasty head injury that had him falling off his feet, still alive. She saw him falling over some corpses that he was hiding behind not far off from the dwarf's barricade. She would have to keep her eyes open for him. A dizzy orc was just as dangerous as a non-dizzy orc - sly dog that they were - and a knife in the back would not surprise her.

Dunabar followed Fali's eyes as she looked around, it seemed there was a lone surviving Orc, that wouldn't do. Orc mischief can never be expected and always comes at the worst time. It seemed like Fali had spotted his rough location, Dunabar decided to pepper the orc with some suppressing fire -- perhaps he'd hit his mark -- but mostly he'd prevent the foul orc from creeping up on them.

Bolrag felt a sting as an arrow grazed his cheek. The dwarves had spotted him. Having had time to recuperate while the dwarves and crow were having their fun, he felt less off balance but still a bit dizzy. There was a constant ringing in his ears from the blow of the axe to his head. Yet, he was able to concentrate, and that was good. He had kept warm by lying inside a dead body he had gutted. His skin was black in place from frostbite. Sneaking out of his corpse hideout and stealthily (though he did leave a crooked path in the snow, being still dizzy from the axe blow) making his way towards the dwarves, he knew he was taking a chance, five against one, but took it. He was going to die anyway. Falling into the barricade, he stabbed at the closest dwarf.

Dunabar had lost sight of the orc. He scanned the horizon looking out for the crows or any other orcs. He saw nothing. Not too long later, he heard a yelp come from the barricade below, a dwarf's yelp of pain! Dunabar quickly ducked below back into the barricade to see what had happened. The orc had crashed through and was attacking Giman! Dunabar growled, not on his watch! He shouted "Eat this you foul orc!" he shouted as he picked up a javelin and threw it in the direction of Bolrag.

The javelin flew wide above Bolrag's head, the orc grunted and scowled at Dunabar who had thrown the weapon. The dwarf was too far away for Bolrag to do anything about. He spat on the ground grimly, there was blood there, but Bolrag didn't care. He took another cruel jab at the nearest dwarf, Giman, laughing in a dry and cruel voice as he did. He may not make it out alive but he would take some of these accursed dwarves with him.

The dwarves were under attack by a dizzy beaten-up orc with axe wounds all over his body and shifty eyes. Dunabar got a good hit in, his weapon finding its mark, but the orc was savage, cruel and relentless. He attacked Giman. Chaos ensued - the faggots flew and the toast too. Fali stood on the incline of the barracks, swinging her axe in rage. Velm kept the song up as she tended her wounds. And still no sign of the bird.

The other dwarves were all beginning to see him. But Bolrag didn't care. He was going to show these dwarves the true meaning of pain. He grinned wickedly and croaked in the common tongue "I'll slice yer beards off after I kills ye" he said wickedly. Bolrag assumed that the dwarves cared a lot about beards, they all seemed to have them.

Giman was taking a beating. The dwarves were tucking their beards into their tunics. The claw-like hands of the orc could quickly snatch their long beards, and no dwarf wanted his beard seized, let alone cut off. Fali stood on the barricade, scanning the skies, daring the Crebian to show its beak again. Velm, almost healed, continued the battle song.

Bolrag scowled as the dwarves tucked their beards into their tunic belts. He laughed crookedly, he'd certainly touched a sore spot with his remark. He was torn on whether to continue with threats or be silent. Some foes would crumble with fear with the right words but others would be inspired to fight the harder, Bolrag feared the Dwarves, like orcs, may fall into the latter category. He grimaced as the dwaves approached, slashing and hacking in his direction. The evil spear which Bolrag was using was enough to keep some of the dwarves from closing too quickly and he stabbed out with it wickedly as they approached.

'Cut him!' Dunlad called to Giman as the orc struck him again. 'Remember your race! You are hard thrawn. Do not let him cut you down!' At these words, Giman found his second wind, so to speak and struck the orc a blow with his fist that was quite remarkable. Velm sang more enthusiastically. And the other dwarves joined in.

The idea of going out in a blaze or glory, or rather making others go out in a blaze of glory, was something Rhafna had always dreamed of, if she could dream that is. Could birds dream? There was some debate amongst the wise and more learned loremasters, Rhafna herself couldn't remember what happened when she went to sleep so, while she should have been an expert on such things, she was, in fact, a rather useless test subject.

None of that mattered at the moment though, she was about to dive bomb the dwarves, cause a ruckus, and get a few of them singed and burned. That was the plan anyway, it might help if she were a bit more coordinated. Sadly, the great bird slammed headfirst into a dwarf. It didn't set him on fire, but at least it was going to give him one hell of a headache.

The stupid dwarf seemed to be re-invigorated by his ugly dwarf friends and Bolrag had suffered a nasty blow with the dwarf's fist for it. He spat blood and snarled at the dwarves again. Before he could reciprocate the bird came flying in and, nearly taking Bolrag's own head off while the bird was at it, the bird slammed into the dwarf. "Watch it!" he snarled, although realizing that the bird wasn't technically on his side either, but 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' or so they say and the bird seemed to be attacking the dwarves. He grinned and decided to take advantage of the dazed dwarf, and thrust forward with his spear.

The bird was back. Giman was attacked from above and the ground. Black wings and pointed spear. Still, he fought fiercely as one of his race does against foes. He swung his axe to and fro, up and down. He heard the orc grunt and knew he had hit his mark. The bird was not reachable, and Giman hoped that Fali would have better luck. He was cut and bleeding, breathing hard. It would be an excellent fight, even if it were his last.

'How was this stupid dwarf still alive?' Bolrag asked himself, the dwarves were a tough and stubborn lot and Bolrag was wishing that he had been fighting scared and puny humans instead. The dwarf swung his axe wildly and it connected with Bolrag's arm drawing a long gash and releasing the dark and foul smelling orc blood. He grimaced as it hit him and shot a death glare at the dwarf. Bolrag was surrounded but he would be damned if he didn't bring some of the dwarves down with him. He lashed out again with the cruel barb, attacking the dwarf Giman who had just struck him.

Supposedly, orcs had some form of coordination; Rhafna had yet to see it, but thus far it was better than trying to go at these bebothersome and confusticating dwarves all by herself. She had no doubt she could, she was a raven after all, not some blockheaded pigeon who didn't know the sky from the lake. They were going for the same dwarf, either by design or happenstance, and, on the plus side, it seemed to be working. Why break up a good thing? She landed on the dwarf just as the orc landed a blow and used her wings to slap the side of his head, disorienting him enough that he seemed to be on his last legs.

The raven seemed to be back, Bolrag noticed, although it appeared that all of his fellow orcs were dead. He didn't have time to count how many dwarves there were. Enough that, if they ganged up on him, he would certainly perish. The raven had attacked right when he had struck the dwarf. The orc let out a cry of glee as he used the bottom of the spear to sweep out the dwarf's legs.

Giman bled. Again the evil forces of the world were upon the lone dwarf. And again from above and below. His fellow dwarves seem frozen in place, unable to aid him, calling out in their secret tongue a prayer of deliverance, tearing their beards and shedding tears. And then, for a time, silence. Fali, upon the barricade, heavy-hearted swung her axe for Giman and struck the bird as a deep rumble suddenly began. The dwarves were silent no more.

No sooner has Rhafna attacked the dwarf, using her powerful wings to bash him upside the head, then another one of the wretched stone lovers wacked her upside the head with an axe. She squawked angrily, flapping away from the dwarf to regain her bearings. She was losing feathers in this fight. Losing feathers! That was the worst thing that could happen to a lovely, eligible crow like herself. She CAWED loudly, circling back around to smack the dwarf again. He wasn't the dwarf that hit her, but he was the one that was going to die because of it.

One of the dwarves was dead. Bolrag was still alive. He cackled maniacally and spat half-blood at the dwarves in front of him "one bearded rat down" he said with a grin. "however many more of yous left". Bolrag hoped that the bird would return and continue to provide assistance, he was still sorely outnumbered after all. Briefly Bolrag considered cutting the beard of the dead dwarf in front of him but decided it would be too risky expose himself. Instead he marched forwards towards a new target.

Orcs made decent, if not great, allies. Who knew? Certainly not Rhafna, or probably other orcs for that matter. The craban was going to have to keep an eye on the fellow, but she was willing to spill blood with him. His eyes looked awfully peckable though. Momentarily, the craban was distracted by just how juicy and shiny and... No! She was not going to get distracted when there were filthy dwarves scurrying about like beetles under a log. She flew up beside the orc and CAWED as loud as she could good, providing a good distraction as he went in for an attack

Upon CAWING loudly she swooped low it was time indeed for her to not just be a distraction as well for the orc but to help in the attack itself further sowing chaos and confusion in the ranks in the dwarven ranks themselves as well. She no longer fought the urge to peck at those juicy shiny orbs that were the dwarfs eyes. She swooped down pecking viciously at them hoping to snatch one out of its socket. At the very least she would be a distraction letting the orc strike even harder.

The slaughter of Giman was more than the Dwarves could handle. Especially, Velm. Her peck wounds now scabbed over, she picked up her axe and was determined to put an end to the remaining orc if it were the last thing she would do. Although, at this point, the odds seem to be against the dwarves. 3 to 1; how the table had flipped. Still, she was encouraged by the song.
