War Of The Dwarves And The Orcs - Early Morning Scrimmage

And of old it was not darksome, but full of light and splendour, as is still remembered in our songs.

Where the orc pressed at the weaker dwarf Rhafna pressed at the stronger, with cruel sharp beak and talon striking as viciously as a bird could. She cawed loudly mocking the dwarves as they tried to mount a defense though it was meagre and she was able to easily enough find weak spots between the mail and plate. The wounds were small but they were many now and mounting. Sooner or later one of the dwarves would fall and her and her tenuous ally would be free of the overly hairy infestation that plagued this mountain.

Somehow things were actually beginning to look positive for the orc. The dwarves seemed to be backing away, pushed back by the onslaught of the bird and Bolrag himself. He grinned wickedly and brandished his weapon at both of the dwarves in front of him. When the bird went in to strike, Bolrag used the distraction to get a cruel blow of his own, using the sharp metal point of his spear tip to drive through the cracks and chains of the armor. While the black blood was flowing freely from many gashes in Bolrag's skin, he was yet undaunted and was beginning to feel more and more confident as the dwarves were falling around him.

They were doing exceptionally well so far the dwarves were clearly being vastly overwhelmed by the onslaught of attacks that picked them apart bit by bit. Rhafna for her part found the dwarf she was after was an easy target and stayed in her face black wings thumping against the helm keeping her up while talon and beak reached for soft facial flesh.

The scales were tipping. The two dwarves were falling under the relentless attacks of the orc and the crebian. Bolrag’s attacks were getting sharper now, his foe was stumbling and the orc felt emboldened by his newfound position of advantage. Perhaps the fight would not end so soon for the orc. He grinned wickedly and stabbed again with his spear.

She scrambled pecking and scratching for a moment longer tearing more flesh hidden deep beneath the hard helm that the dwarf wore to protect herself from damage was not enough to completely keep her from wounds. She let out a caw and flapped away for a moment wanting to check on her orcish ally before wheeling back through the air towards the stronger of the two dwarves. An irony that she a small bird by comparison to the orc would face the stronger. Of the two she however was the healthier of all those that remained yet on the field.

The spear of Bolrag darted in and out from different angles. The bird was distracting the dwarves to a sufficient extent that Bolrag was able to finally be on the offensive. Feeling liberated and not yet considering what would be the outcome should both of the dwarves be defeated, Bolrag pressed the attack. He parried the blows of the dwarf expertly, well for an orc, and wicked ripostes with his spear followed each parry.

The fight was still going well the balance of the battle at this point had almost completely slipped to the favour of the crow and the orc and still the two of them pressed for who knew when there might be more of the nasty dwarves spilling up out of the mountain? Rhafna certainly didn't know and wasn't about to take the chance that there might be more under the hill. She could see the orc was doing well and went back to her opponent striking at them with her wings.

Even though the combat seemed to be going the way of the orc and the crebian for now, there was still a long way to go until the end and who knows perhaps there would be some more dwarves who would pop out of holes in the ground. For all Bolrag knew dwarves were simply born fully grown from the ground as if wrought from the very stone within the mountain. It seemed reasonable enough to Bolrag at least. He parried another blow from the axe and swung his spear overhead to strike the dwarf with the butt end of the weapon.

The dwarf still hadn't even attempted to respond to the onslaught in a while and Rhafna was beginning to think it would be swifter and wiser of them to chose one and get rid of that dwarf before they snapped from their shock and stupor and actually began to fight back. However how could she possibly get this information to the orc that she was working with? She was no raven and she spoke no words she gave a shrug of her wings as she circled about they would end the dwarves soon enough she was certain of it.

The orcs attacks were slowing a sign that Rhafna had no doubt meant she would eventually be on her own again before this battle was over, the question was would he hold out long enough that she wouldn't be fighting entirely on her own for more than one dwarf? After all there was still plenty of armor on the dwarf she was fighting and they were strong and healthy yet over all unlike most of the other dwarves that the orc had taken down before the two remaining dwarves. It didn't matter though. The crebian knew full well that she needed to keep fighting and keep working on her dwarf. The faster she brought the furry beast to it's knees the better.

Bolrag was tiring, he could feel his muscles spasm in his arms and in his legs. The sweat was pouring off him now and it stung as the salt entered the open wounds which were strewn across him. But the fight was not yet over. Still two dwarves stood before him and though they were weakened they were still fierce and it was said that a dwarf could be even more dangerous the closer they got to death. Bolrag was forced to keep his guard up and to focus on the fight that was in front of him, he could no longer spare even a small part of his attention wondering at what would happen next as he was tired and had to focus only on what was happening in front of him. He parried another blow but it was slow and weak and he was unable to riposte with any real weight.

Rhafna let out a caw of encouragement to the orc that was still fighting indeed he was slow and tired weak from stinging blows and long days on the battlefield. Rhafna for her part was doing better than him, while she had taken many blows for a while she had been given enough reprieve to tend and preen her feathers and put them back in place before she had started her deadly assault once more. She hoped that the orc would find the strength to do the same. Of course, if he did not she supposed she could fight on on her own though she had to admit it was far swifter paced with him than without.

The vision in Bolrag’s left eye was being clouded by blood and sweat and he blinked in frustration trying to get a clear sight. The dwarves seemed to be on the defensive now and Bolrag risked a pause to rub his eyes. The dwarves did not appear to take advantage of his momentary weakness. Perhaps they themselves were tending to their wounds. The battle was moving now more than ever against the dwarves but it was not over yet. Bolrag had failed to do much more than make his eye even more raw so that he could still barely see out of it despite clearing away some of the blood and sweat.

How much more would it take for the dwarf to fall? Rhafna was not sure entirely however she could see that the dwarf that she was fighting was faltering compared to what she had been during the day. The black feathered bird could not take a break though in her attempts to bring the dwarf down. She continued on circling the dwarf pecking at her she could see that the dwarf was almost as bloodied as her orc ally soon she'd be bloodier thought the armor made it hard to tell.

Another sharp peck at the dwarf she was harrying and a caw of encouragement to the orc for she had not heard much from him in way of fighting. She hoped he'd not fallen, though it would have taken some great feat to bring him down considering how he had been doing when she had last seen him. Instead she made sure to bring the dwarf that she was fighting even closer to the sweet embrace of death.

Thrust, parry, dodge, thrust, parry, dodge, it was becoming a tired dance between the orc and the dwarf, the fight had been long and while they had vigor in them, Bolrag was uncertain for how long it would last. The swing of an axe nearly cut off his head if Bolrag hadn't had dodged after recovering from his own attack. As the axe whipped over his head all of Bolrag's muscles tightened in anxious response. From his crouched position he struck back with a cruel jab aimed at the midsection of the dwarf.

Where the orc was having to duck and bob to avoid strikes Rhafna was having a far easier go of it from what the black feathered fiend could tell. She'd hardly needed to flap a wing the last while. Aside from the fact the dwarf she was pecking at wasn't just laying down so she could perch on her helm and peck down on her. No alas she did need to flap her wings to actually get to the dwarfs face... though she was starting to wonder if she could perch on the helm and reach down and just peck at her from there. Yes she was going to try that because why not?

Together, the crebain and the orc had dominated the battle for the last few tired moments. He wondered if perhaps the Dwarves were beginning to lose their nerve? That seemed unusual, for dwarves, at least as far as Bolrag had heard. They were supposed to be like the mountains themselves: immovable and carved from rock and stone. Not so, it seemed now, as Bolrag continued to press the attack with the bird harassing the dwarves from the sky. It was no surprise to Bolrag now why the white hand used these birds as spies.

Sitting atop the dwarfs helm Rhafna preened herself and then pecked violently at the forehead of the dwarf she had landed on. Perhaps they were asleep? How rude in the middle of a battle was all the crow could think. Not that she minded terribly it was a bit like how she'd taken down the eagle.

The battle continued but it was becoming suddenly one sided against the dwarves who both appeared now considerably on the backfoot. Bolrag did not let that allow him to relent in his attack. He had fought in battles before and knew that as soon as your guard was down the enemy would attack. Despite being an orc he was not completely devoid of tactics. In fact, since the dwarves seemed to be on the backfoot, this would rather be the time to press forward and so he did so, forcing the dwarves to backup.

She spread her wings and let out a call to her brethren since she was certain they would be feasting sooner rather than later. She shifted her weight making sure she was staying well balanced on the helm flapping her wings to make life a little easier for herself before pecking at the dwarf once more.

‘I could get used to this’ the orc thought as he continued to attack the retreating dwarf. The bird had made a fine ally so far and it seemed that they had the two remaining dwarves nearly beaten. Nearly, but not out yet. There was still time, Bolrag knew, and more pivotal battles had been turned at the bitter last moment. But if there was anything he could do about this one then Bolrag was sure to fight until the bittermost end.

Indeed this was an easy battle now that had been going on for the last while. Indeed it would be hard for the dwarves to rebound short of there being more dwarves popping out of the mountain which meant that soon this long and grizzly battle would end. Which would mean it would be feasting time. Of course that also meant that there was an issue coming up after all Bolrag HAD attacked her before and she wasn't sure she could let that stand but for now she was content to get rid of the dwarves first.

Velm and Fali stood back to back, supporting one another, Fali being the weakest. The snow had melted around their feet, and they stood in a puddle of bloody slush. They knew that this would most likely be their final fight. The odds were against them. All they could do was strike back one at a time, keeping up their fortitude with nothing but their song and dreams of the earth opening up below the orcs' feet, swallowing the vile one up and a noble Eagle ripping the crows' guts out.

Suddenly their monopoly on the battle turned as the dwarves found the fight inside them again, much to Bolrag's chagrin who now found himself stuck back in a similar stalemate. But as long as he had his partner in the crebain it's likely that the dwarves would eventually be whittled down. Bolrag had to duck and then jump to avoid the dangerous swings of the dwarves as they attacked the nearest target to them. They had begun singing again and Bolrag swore, if the dwarves weren't irritating enough they had to start their chanting again. Luckily there were only two voices which joined in and the booming thunder that had been the chanting earlier had subsided considerably.

Fali grunted as she lifted her axe and swung it at the orc, studying its vile face when her blow connected. Could this orc have been, at one time, an Elf? He had the ears for it. But that was about all. The rest of him was a mishap, crooked, festering mess. Not at all like the elves that she had met on some of her journeys. Velm had cut him up badly when last she had done battle with it. Fali hoped that the wounds would cause the orc to falter; then, she would try to put an end to it. She swung her axe again, singing as she did so.

Ahhh the dwarf that the orc was facing was back to her senses it seemed. Not the worst thing to happen Rhafna decided mostly because it was not the dwarf that she was facing which would have made life harder on her. Not that she wouldn't have managed to find a way to deal with it. She kept at her pecking at the dwarf she was perched upon, perhaps this dwarf had given up. Maybe it had blood poisoning and was growing weak and couldn't fight anymore? Whatever the reason Rhafna did not care she just kept pecking at the dwarf knowing that the sooner she made sure it was dead the sooner she'd be able to move onto the next dwarf.

With a sudden rage which nearly toppled Bolrag the dwarf re-engaged in the fight with him. Bolrag barely managed to parry a blow as it threatened to cut his head clear from his shoulders. Bolrag had been unprepared for such unanticipated ferocity and it forced him to retreat several paces to regain his bearing. The crebian and orc would not have the straightforward victory that that had seemed so temptingly close not a few minutes prior. But the return of the dwarves spirit would be an insufficient deterrent for the orc.

Rhafna let out a squack of a crow as the orc nearly toppled in a fury of blows. She actually took to the air once more in an attempt to make sure she didn't get hit by any wayward pole arm or axe. She circled for a moment, encouraging her large bipedal counterpart to keep up the good fight with her crowish clicks and gurgles like one would any hatchling. Indeed of the two of them he was perhaps the most in danger and he needed to hold fast for a while longer.

Not wanting to relent in the attack if the opportunity presents itself, Bolrag thrust his spear in a rapid series of jabs at Fali angled top then bottom then left then top again and bottom and then right to break the pattern. The flurry of thrusts would hopefully catch the dwarf by surprise and at least one of them might get through. Bolrag was feeling stronger now and bolder than he had before. The two dwarves who had before seemed such dangerous threats seemed to be faltering. This emboldened Bolrag and he continued to press the attack with a new found vigor.

The orc was still fighting viciously which was good, as was it meant that he would most certainly be keeping that dwarfs attentions while she continued to deal with hers. Slowly more blood and gore was making itself visible as she did more and more damage bringing the dwarfs life to a miserable and painful end. She landed back on the dwarfs shoulder and started to peck and pick at the dwarfs armor to rid her of it to make her easier to kill.

The blood was in her eyes. She would see her last days through a red haze. Her neck was stiff, for her beard was heavy with sweat, blood and grim. Yet she continued to lift her axe and swing. The bird attempted to land on her shoulder, but it did not perch long when Velm's axe swung by it. Fali was almost a dead weight on her back. She could hear her kin breathing heavily. The orc was unshakeable; it would seem.

Ahh there was life left in the dwarf that she had been pecking at bit of life by bit of life. Not that it mattered terribly. She would fall just like the other, though it would mean that the orc would have perhaps an easier time getting rid of the weaker dwarf. Yes. That's all that this would do a postponement of her own death for it would not be Rhafna dying in this fight, she had sworn that to herself many nights ago. She flapped her wings, and landed back on the dwarfs shoulder pecking and pulling at the armor in an attempt to get rid of it exposing more soft and tasty flesh.

With each thrust of his spear a small amount more of his remaining energy was sapped. But Bolrag was an orc, bred and toughened in the Misty Mountains and he was not about to give up just yet. His opponent seemed to be weakening and the crebain and orc had managed to whittle the two dwarves down. How much longer would they last? Bolrag wondered, but he could not distract himself for too long. Despite being tired, and bloodied, and having fought for countless hours, the dwarves were no foe to be taken lightly and Bolrag could not risk even more than a moment's thought outside his current situation.

There was still a lot of work to do to get rid of the dwarves that still stood, but they were wearing down more and more with each peck and stab. Rhafna grabbed at one of the straps that head the armor in place and shook her head violently like a warg trying to get it off since the dwarf was still as likely to attack her so she needed to be as rough and get the armor off as quickly as possible.

With each thrust and jab, Bolrag weakened his opponent further and endeavored to increase his chances of victory, at least in the current battle. He had no reason to think that he would escape entirely, but with each foe that was removed his odds increased. Bolrag could tell that the dwarves were getting tired. It would not be long now before his foe would fall to Bolrag's cruel barb, but it was not yet, and Bolrag had to remain steadfast so as not to overly risk himself in the combat. A sweep of an axe came down sharply to his left which he only barely managed to dodge before attacking again with his spear.

She shook her head again and pulled and tugged still trying to get the armor off of the dwarf. So far it was sticking in place but she'd sorted this out on a different dwarf once already she'd get it sorted out again sooner or later. After a moment though she did give an angry hard pack at the neck area of the dwarf that was wearing the offending difficult armor in an attempt to let them know how angry shew as about the inconvenience of it all.

She was getting tired. It happened even to the toughest dwarven woman, especially after stones knew how long they'd been fighting these orcs and the bird. Dwarven men usually tired first, but they were all dead now and there was no one to really compare herself favorably too. In fact, it felt a little awkward to compare herself to the dead. Surely doing that was a bad omen right? It must have been because the spear came just around the curve of her axe and scrapped the side of her face. It wasn't much, but it was distracting. There was blood everywhere all of the sudden. Blood, blood, blood, blood, blood. So much blood.

There was a rush if fighting between the orc and his particular dwarven for ending up with his spear cutting into the dwarf drawing the end of the battle that much closer. She bobbed her whole body excitedly as she tried again with renewed vigor to undo the buckle on the dwarfs armor to make her more vulnerable and easier to kill.

The blood drawn from the gash on the dwarf from Bolrag's attack splattered across his eyes and he cried out in relish. The orc tasted blood and it was enough to spur him on to fight with even more vigor than he had before. The bloodlust was awakened in Bolrag and he would fight now even more violently, and so he threw caution to the wind and bull rushed the dwarf. Holding his spear out as he charged he aimed to skewer the dwarf and failing that knock her clean from her feet in surprise while her vision was obscured by the blood.

She squawked and hopped and flapped her wings in an attempt to free the dwarf from the iron shell that she still bore. The spray of blood from the other dwarf splattered on her from Bolrags attack and she worked all the harder finally starting to give way the leather pulling free of the small metal tongue that locked it in place and she pulled harder excited to perhaps finally have an easier target to attack.

And again she pulled and hopped and let go of the leather strap letting the armor loosen and slack off of the dwarfs shoulder the crow not realizing she'd been fighting with the pauldron strapping which didn't allow much more room for her to peck but it was a bit of armor now hanging off kilter being less helpful than it was before. And it did show her another buckle that she could start working on.

Everything was covered in a haze of red. The sky, the sun, the earth, everything glistened with sanguine prestidigitation. She didn't feel much pain, not anymore. Her entire body was wreathed in pain, but somehow she was cocooned and insulated from it. It was as if her soul was already half out of her body. The halls of the Grand Forge were calling her. She could hear the ringing hammers like silver bells as they clanged out a serenade, a symphony of iron, copper, and silver. The sound was so real, so visceral, that she thought it was real, that it was calling her in the real world. She dropped the axe and swung her head round, no longer caring about the battle still raging around her ears.

Something fey must have taken the Dwarf in front of Bolrag who watched as the dwarf proceeded to drop her axe and turn her head as if to ignore Bolrag completely. At first he was confused and wondered if perhaps there was some Deus Ex Machina which was coming to the Dwarves rescue. Bolrag hesitated then, as he stared behind the dwarf to whatever she was looking at. He half expected to see a company of dwarves suddenly appear, marching and singing grimly as they went. But no such saviors came, there were no more dwarves for Bolrag to battle through save the two which remained. What had happened to the dwarf to make her act so? Pondering the philosophy of the end of a Dwarf's life was far beyond the capacity of simple Bolrag who decided that, since the dwarf appeared mad rather than hiding some unexpected information, that there was no reason that Bolrag shouldn't charge after her, and so he did. Spear in hand he dashed forward after Fali, trying to make sure the dwarf wouldn't escape to find some new ally to rescue them.

She gave up on the buckle for a moment as the orc paused in his attack for a moment and then she saw why. The dwarf that he was fighting had dropped her axe and was looking... Somewhere. Rhafna looked in the same direction and saw nothing no ravens or elves or eagle or men or other dwarves just nothingness. The crow leat out a croak calling her kin for a soon to be feast on the second last dwarven corpse before giving her own dwarf a sharp peck.

CRASH came the orc as he bullrushed the dwarf who was either escaping or driven mad by the combat. The sound of the colliding metal, from the armor worn by both the orc and the dwarf, rung clearly in the room in which they were fighting. Black blood mixed with red blood covered Bolrag's armor and it spilled on and mixed with the blood which soaked in on Fali's armor as well. If Bolrag had been sensitive to smell, he expected this would have been particularly foul, but luckily for the orc he had no such weakness, which was a good thing considering the general smell of himself and his kind in the misty mountains. Bolrag's spear had clattered against the ground as he tackled the fey dwarf and he was now fighting with tooth and nail and claw.

The dwarfs were dying in the dark of night now that early morning had stretch on long into the deep of the night when orc and creban held advantage. Dark creatures for a dark time. The orcs dwarf was nearing death and her own reduced to a shadow half of what she had once been and soon she would be even less again untill all that was left were bones and armor long cleaned and bleached under the blazing sun.

Things were not going well for the dwarf. Thankfully, though, she had no idea what was happening to her. To describe her as "head in the clouds" would be accurate, if culturally insensitive. Somewhere, deep within her soul, Fali knew that she was going to die. Fighting against orcs, crebain, and all manner of other nasty animals had taken its toll on her body. She'd fought well, fought long, fought bravely and honorably, but no matter how well the songs would be song, they would all end with her death. That was okay though, she was too beyond caring too deeply at this point. The craban and orc would die at some point and they would waste and decay, while when she died she would go to the Great Forges and perfect all the crafts she had never had time for in this life. She was getting the better end of the deal for sure.

More blood and a strange sense of euphoria came over the dark feathered bird as the end of this particular battle was drawing ever nearer. Soon she would be able to return to her nest and sleep well with a properly full belly. Yes that sounded like a fantastic thing. With that thought in mind she decided she was going to try to tip the helm that had stopped her from doing far worse damage to the dwarfs face. It took a bit of work but eventually the helm topped up and off the dwarves head falling to the ground making it so that soon she could pull and peck at her particular dwarves ears and head with ease.

The helm was on the ground and flesh was easier to reach and so Rhafna snapped her beak cruelly making sure to tear what she could to kill the dwarf as quickly as she could. She was only a crow though so speed verse something as hardy as a dwarf was not going to be her strongest suite. Blood flowed swiftly though and the dwarf as worse for the crows attention.
