THE PELENNOR FIELDS

Image

Gandalf passed now into the wide land beyond the Rammas Echor. So the men of Gondor called the out-wall that they had built with great labour, after Ithilien fell under the shadow of their Enemy. For ten leagues or more it ran from the mountain's feet and so back again, enclosing in its fence the fields of the Pelennor: fair and fertile townlands on the long slopes and terraces falling to the deep levels of the Anduin.

At its furthest point from the Great Gate of the City, north-eastward, the wall was four leagues distant, and there from a frowning bank it overlooked the long flats beside the river, and men had made it high and strong: for at that point, upon a walled causeway, the road came in from the fords and bridges of Osgiliath and passed through a guarded gate between embattled towers.

At its nearest point the wall was little more than one league from the City, and that was south-eastward. There Anduin, going in a wide knee about the hills of Emyn Arnen in South Ithilien, bent sharply west, and the out-wall rose upon its very brink: and beneath it lay the quays and landings of the Harlond for craft that came upstream from the southern fiefs.

The townlands were rich, with wide tilth and many orchards, and homesteads there were with oast and garner, fold and byre, and many rills rippling through the green from the highlands down to Anduin.

The Ranger Training Grounds can be found outside of the White City's walls.

OSGILIATH

Image

Founded by Elendil and his sons Isildur and Anárion at the end of the Second Age, Osgiliath straddled the Great River Anduin at a point approximately half way between the cities of Minas Anor to the west and Minas Ithil to the east. While Anor was the chief city of Anárion and Ithil that of Isildur, the brothers had their thrones alongside each other at Osgiliath.

During the first overthrow of the Dark Lord Sauron, Minas Ithil was taken and Isildur was forced to flee down the Anduin and seek Elendil, but Anárion rallied Gondor's forces at Osgiliath and drove the Enemy back to the mountains.

Osgiliath was burned during the Kin-strife, with its palantír being lost in the rebellion. Afterwards, having not fully recovered from the ruinous civil war, it was struck by the Great Plague, causing it to become partially deserted and fall into ruins. As a result King Tarondor moved the capital to Minas Anor in T.A. 1640. Around the time that Minas Ithil fell to the Ringwraiths and became Minas Morgul, Osgiliath became unsafe and the remaining population was driven out in T.A. 2475 when Uruks from Mordor occupied Ithilien and destroyed the Great Bridge of the city. Although the Uruks were driven back by Boromir, son of Denethor, the city was finally ruined and from then on it became a city of ghosts watched over by a Gondorian garrison at Minasnumen on the western embankment.

In T.A. 3018 the eastern half was taken by Mordorian troops, led by the Witch King of Angmar. Boromir and his men managed to destroy the last of the great bridges and slow down the march of the Enemy. A second, later attack from Mordor, however, forced Faramir to evacuate the city. After Osgiliath was overrun, it became a crossing for orcs, Haradrim and Easterlings during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

It is highly likely that Osgiliath would be rebuilt in the Fourth Age. One would be safe to assume this was a lengthy proces, considering the dwindled population of Minas Tirith as well as the necessary repairs and projected renovations to Gondor's capital itself.

- Thank you to Pellaadarion for his sterling work on the original Osgiliath thread, from which the first three paraghraps of the text above is copied.

THE NORTHERN FIEFDOMS

Image

Harlond
The port and docks of the Minas Tirith, 3-4 miles south of the city.

Anorien
Anorien is located north of the White Mountains, bordered on the east by the Anduin, on the west bordering Rohan. The Great West Road runs through Anorien, connecting Minas Tirith with Rohan. On the border between Anorien and Rohan is Firien Wood. The seven Beacon-hills are stretched out across Anorien. Also there is the Druadan forest in which the Druedain dwell. On the western edge of the forest there is a stone quarry from which the stones are taken to Minas Tirith through the Stonewain Valley.

Lossarnach

Lossarnach is a well populated region in the valleys south-east of the White Mountains. The river Erui flows from the mountains through Lossarnach towards the Anduin. The woods and fields of Lossarnach are filled with flowers in spring, and there are great orchards in the lower valleys. From this fief the herbs are brought to the market of Minas Tirith and are used in the Houses of Healing.

Lamedon
The fiefdom of Lamedon is north of Belfalas at the foot of the White Mountains. The town of Ethring is located at the crossings of the river Ringlo, and the town of Calembel at the fords of the river Ciril.

Ranger Thûllir Bregedýr
Solo Scouting Mission - Osgiliath East Bank
FA early Spring.

Thûllir paused after stepping off the ferry to glance back at the River and then up to the still visible city lifted above the ruins, far in the distance. The sun gleamed over its white walls and lit the tall spike at its summit, but the grey clouds overhead and cool breeze that fluttered his clothing seemed to match his mood. It was fitting now as he left the warmth of home to spend weeks amongst the elements that the dreariness seemed to fall as a cloak over the landscape.

He turned back to greet the watch sergeant with a familiar murmur and a brief turn off the wrist to show his palmed pass. It didn’t seem all that long ago that this was a war zone, and crossing to this bank meant entering enemy territory. He was thankful that, while it was still dangerous, it was much safer now. These men knew him well, but it was still important to give his credentials for passing into more unsettled territory. "Going south to the Prince? Should we expect you back this way?" Thûllir shook his head silently at the question before responding quietly. "No to both. Patrolling north this time, so likely returning by Cair Andros. I may come this way, but only by necessity. They can expect me before the moon is full again, but if I haven't returned by then...send word to the Captain." It was grim to think about, but it always served to let them know where and when they might need to send him a rescue party or search for his body. Common wisdom said to always go with a group, but his task was to observe his assigned area, and seek out intruders of any kind. It was easier for a single Ranger to blend in and travel with some stealth than any group.

The sergeant shook his head but then nodded and clapped him on the shoulder. "Will do. We'll send word. Until next time then Bregedýr!" "Until next time, sergeant." A slight smile returned to crease Thûllir's bearded cheek and light his blue-grey eyes. Saluting, he turned to the quiet streets lined with ruins. Time to go.

Ranger Duinion
Waiting just outside the Great Gate

Stroking the velvety nose of his horse, Duinion thought maybe it was just as well that he was able to go on ahead and wait. He didn't know what this merchant was like, and he preferred to make the trip through the city by himself, so that he could take whatever time he needed in passing through all those tunnels and gates, which might be a few moments longer than the average person. He never did like all that stuff, and was far happier remaining outside in the fresh air. It was fortunate that he'd had only to go to the second level today, rather than all they way up to the sixth.

Unsure how long it would take before Pele arrived with their merchant in tow, the ranger took a moment to check on all the straps and buckles of the horse's saddles. Not that he doubted Pele's ability in saddling a horse, but it gave him something productive to do, and helped to satisfy his mind that all was secure. His bow was ready for swift action from atop his horse, if need be, while his quiver hung ready within easy reach. Nodding in satisfaction, he spent some time stroking the horses, and half-wishing that he had taken Pele up on her offer of an apple; he could have cut it in two and given one half to each horse. "Sorry fellas, I didn't bring any treats for you," He apologized, as one of them nuzzled him as if asking for something. Hopefully, they could set out soon and that would take the horse's minds off of any special treats. And as far as Duinion was concerned, the sooner they set out, the better.

Outside the Great Gate

Pele had gone on her way towards the Gate before looking back at Kaylin, having full confidence that the Ranger will know best how to best make use of her skills, and that she would also make sure that the merchant did finally make his way out without any further undue delay if she managed to successfully execute whatever quick plans she had made. Soon she was out of the enclosed city and easily found Duinion with both horses.

"And yet more waiting,"
she said, having reached the group of two horses and one human. Upon hearing her voice, Pele's black gelding turned his head to nibble on her arm gently as soon as she came within reach. "The guy was taking his sweet time, so I gave him an hour - some of which has already passed. I threatened to call us off should he continue being a total slowcoach." Certain annoyance could still be heard in her voice, as she proceeded to rub her horse's neck. "Have you been a good lad, Temper? No biting, no kicking?" she asked him, and then looked at Duinion with a smile.

Reaching within saddle bags, Pele fished out two more apples, one of which she offered Temper who took it eagerly, and tossed the other to Duinion with a mere warning of "Catch!" just a couple moments before the action itself.

Since she had left most of her weapons here since she did not wish to worry the people at the market with it, Pele buckled on her sword and made a check on the bow holder and quiver before securing it on her back within comfortable reach. "Recruited some more assistance," she remarked almost as an afterthought. "I figure we should soon be on our way, if all goes well. If not, I'm heading right back home for some tea and cake." A glint in her eyes gave away the humour in the last comment.

Ranger Duinion
Waiting just outside the Great Gate

Glancing up as he heard Pele's voice, Duinion frowned slightly. "Still waiting?" He was rather surprised, but listened as she gave a little more information. This didn't make a lot of sense; why beg for a ranger escort to protect from bandits or whatever, and then act like he couldn't be bothered to even show up? Shaking his head, he sighed and decided he already didn't like the merchant. At least it wasn't so bad waiting out here. They could breathe out here, at least. "Did you remember to pack your backup patience?" He asked with a grin.

Hearing the word 'catch!', he reacted on instinct, reaching to catch the item before even noticing what it was, and smiled. "How many of those are you bringing?" He laughed. "Enough for our entire group and all the horses?" He offered the apple to his horse, earning a bit of favor from the animal.

"More assistance?" He questioned, glancing at Pele curiously. "Are you expecting to need it, or merely playing it safe?" He figured it was always best to be prepared, so it wasn't unwelcome to hear that they had more assistance, though he couldn't help wondering what she meant by that. Tea and cake sounded nice, but he had a feeling that she wouldn't be getting any just yet. It seemed more likely the merchant would show up unless he truly didn't care about this. He didn't mind that, as he was looking forward to a bit of adventure that should at the same time, hopefully, not be too 'exciting' in a bad way.

Outside the Great Gate with Duinion @Rillewen

"Well, the guy is obviously used to doing things at his own pace. Maybe. Or just thinking his wealth means he gets to do things his way," Pele grumbled some more, not happy to be stuck with someone she found difficult to communicate with. Perhaps she can at least stay away from him as much as possible, though some interactions would be unavoidable. "I am not that confident I have much additional patience for such arrogant people."

Temper was rather happy to receive enough attention from Pele as she did not often bring him to the city, and when she did, more likely than not he ended up spending lots of time in the stables bored; one did not have a great need for a horse in the city, and she did not spend much time at her home away from the city. Having prepared herself, she now happily gave the horse all the pets he asked for and only smiled at the received nudges and nibbles.

"If they don't come soon I might run out of apples, perhaps there are some five or six left," she said, playing with Temper's mane. "Might buy a whole big sack if I'm forced to go back yet again and fetch the merchant. And I did figure out some assistance might be good in prodding him out this way, and all such things, almost accidentally." Pele looked at Duinion and wondered how much she should tell him - she did not have much information to go on, except for hearsay and suspicions. "Might be worth keeping an eye on him."

Kaylin - in disguise as Hirilfael of House Luinamath
Near the Great Gate

She'd given Firdaus a slight smile before allowing him to help her into the carriage. On the way down the streets of Minas Tirith, Kaylin looked out of the carriage window, as if fascinated by the sights. After all, she had just gotten here, hadn't she?

When they approached the Great Gate, she turned some of her attention back on the merchant. She decided to make him sweat a little under her detached regard. Once they were actually passing through the gate, she spoke. "So, Master Firdaus. You mentioned we would cover quite distance yet today. Pray tell, where is your business taking you? And what might you find there that cannot find you in the City of Kings?"

Since she was supposed to know nothing about Pele and Duinion's escort, she did not look outside of the carriage to find them. She would leave that up to Firdaus, if he cared to. More likely, the two Rangers would find them, first.

Outside the Great Gate

Luckily Pele had not become too impatient yet, when she spotted the wagons roll out the Gate - the same wagons she had seen by Firdaus' shop. "Oh, look, Duinion, our charge has made his way out without making us wait for him too long!" she laughed softly, and then sighed as she watched the wagons continue heading off eastwards without stopping. "Shall we then?" she nodded in the direction of moving travellers.

Slipping her foot into a stirrup she got herself up in the saddle and settled in properly before urging Temper forward in a trot. Catching up, Pele rode up to the carriage with the important passengers, and remained there for long enough until she had made eye contact with Firdaus and made sure that he knew they were there. From where she was she could not see the woman next to him too well, so she did not make any assumptions just yet. Without a word she then simply nodded at them and fell back behind the second wagon, deciding that there was no immediate need to be all alert right away.

"Duinion," she approached her comrade after a moment. "I suppose we should still keep eyes and ears open here, but at least this area can be easily overseen. Do you have any preferences for how we should do the guarding once we get into the woodlands?"

Image

While he had expected questions seeing that Hirifael was very business-minded, Firdaus was not too happy to find himself under the interrogation this quickly no matter how expected it could have been when travelling with someone you just met into unknown direction. He shifted uncomfortably on his cushioned seat and reached for his handkerchief again.

"Some business does require a bit of travel, a bit of secrecy, my lady..." he began, thinking how to explain his approach of getting the valuable goods he sold. "Competition is fierce in the White City, and I do not want my competitors to find out all my trade secrets. Not much can be kept well hidden in the marketplace - the word travels fast. Sometimes the materials are brought to me here, but for the best ones I make appointments elsewhere to make sure that I can keep my advantages of having special contacts."

This much was true, and Firdaus did take all the care possible to keep his contacts quite secret, and his selection of fabrics often included such that could be found nowhere else in the city. He hoped that Hirifael would understand the reasoning behind it, and he gave her a careful look. "I have ordered some special fabrics to be brought to a settlement on the east bank of the Anduin, it is called Maegdruath. Also hoping to sell off some goods on the way through Emyn Arnen - the village is about a day's travel beyond it. Two days to get there, a day for business, two days back... I hope your servants would settle your things here properly meanwhile, my lady?"

Firdaus looked out the window restlessly, wondering whether his companion would regret joining for such a lengthy trip; yet, if she was intent on getting the best fabrics, perhaps not. His eyes fell on Pele riding alongside the carriage, and for a brief moment he met her gaze before she rode off again.

"I got some Rangers for protection, just to be on the sure side, though the roads are not that dangerous any longer," he explained as if hiring Rangers to guard merchants was a common thing. "Having a wagon filled with expensive goods might cause some unwelcome interest as well, so I figure their presence would keep such curiosity at bay."

Ranger Duinion

Nodding, Duinion wondered what Pele may suspect of this merchant. Having never met the man, he couldn't imagine what he might expect, but he had never been too fond of merchants anyway, ever since he worked for one for a brief time in his childhood. "At least we'll be traveling and getting some fresh air," He pointed out to Pele with a smile. "And the horses are getting exercise." He grinned. "Which is probably best, so they work off all those apples you keep feeding them."

Watching the wagons roll right past, he glanced at Pele with a slightly raised eyebrow, wondering... "I thought he was supposed to meet us here." he mumbled as she mounted her horse. He followed suit and urged his horse to follow Temper, though not too closely. Still wondering what Pele meant about enlisting some help, he didn't get near enough to see that the merchant had a lady riding along with him, not that he would have recognized her even if she were not in disguise. There seemed little need to ride right alongside the wagon, so he hung back a little. They were still in the Pelennor, after all, what harm could really come to them here?

As Pele rejoined him, he glanced around at the wagons, thoughtful. "No preference, exactly, though it might be a good idea for at least one of us to travel ahead of the wagons, and watch out for any potential danger." He mentioned, unsure exactly what they might be encountering. "Bandits like to set ambushes, but if one of us rode far enough ahead, they ought to be able to detect any dangers before the wagons get that far." He paused, thinking on that. It would be better if they had more of them, actually. "Another might bring up the rear?" It was difficult, there being only two of them. "Of course that would make it harder to signal to each other if there is any danger ahead," he added with a small frown. "Escorting merchants isn't something I'm very familiar with, I'll admit." he added with a shrug.
"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

Kaylin - in disguise as Hirilfael of House Luinamath
Near the Great Gate

She purposefully let her cool expression become a bit less detached when Firdaus mentioned guarding his trade secrets and sometimes meeting contacts well outside of the marketplace - and even the City. He had earned a small, pensive nod. "Interesting. Indeed, that would seem like a smart strategy." Her tone took on a slightly pleased quality. "This bodes well for our possible collaboration. My House would appreciate fabrics not everyone in the White City has ready access to." Remembering how Pele had mentioned they might need to investige him a bit further, Kaylin thought she may have just planted a seed for him to take her into his confidence more easily. Then she seemed to consider something. "Would you be open to certain requests? Such as only selling a particular lot of fabric to us? So that none other in Minas Tirith could be seen wearing it?"
She arched an eyebrow. "Naturally, if such a request were made, we would purchase your full supply. It would not be our intention to make you lose money."

Kaylin was surprised when she heard the travel would take five days. Thankfully, her Captain was involved - or she very likely would have gotten in trouble for staying away that long! However, she made sure not to let anything register on her face. She looked out of the carriage. "Five days is a bit more than I would have thought," she admitted. "Nevertheless, a good deal would be worth the effort." She glanced back at the merchant. "I do hope I was not wrong to trust a good deal could be made. On the upside, I will be able to learn much of your person, and whether or not you would be the right fit for us."

She did allow surprise to register on her expression when he mentioned having arranged some Rangers for protection. "Indeed! You have enough sway to procure such an escort? You do mean, King Elessar's Rangers?" She threw a few more looks outside of the carriage, as if rather interested. "I do admit you have stirred my curiosity. I have heard they are the best that Gondor has to offer."

Travelling on the Pelennor Fields

"We might have to resort to whistles or something to communicate once we get beyond the walls," Pele said, as she looked ahead down the road thoughtfully. "Looking after merchants of any kind wouldn't really be our task, least of all such arrogant fools. But there was a need to take a thought of this one, just to check out if he is really only interested in his business or if there is something more behind it."

Temper was beginning to toss his head impatiently, and Pele laughed and patted his neck. "I think my horse thinks this pace is too slow, perhaps I should let him run for a while since we are still within relatively safe boundaries. I'll race off to that distant tree and back," she nodded towards a birch growing by the roadside some considerable distance away. "Your four-legged companion definitely seems to be calmer... I'll be back in a moment!"

Having given a fair warning to Duinion, Pele's heels nudged Temper into action, and he did not need to be told twice. Gradually she guided Temper into greater speed until they were off at a gallop, kicking up the dust. Pele kept her weight as steadily as she could over her hips, while keeping herself slightly above the saddle and leaning close to the horse's neck. She enjoyed the little race as much as the horse, letting the wind play with the escaped loose strands of her hair. Slowing down to trot around the birch tree, they headed back towards the wagons.

"Easy, lad," Pele laughed, slowing Temper down just in time not to scare the horses who were busy at work pulling the wagons. Her blue eyes still reflected the excitement and joy, when she returned to the position near Duinion.

Image
Firdaus did his best not to let it be overly seen that the possibility of having an exclusive customer appealed to him greatly. He mastered his features into a small smile as he seemed to think rather hard on the lady's questions.

"My business as such is focused mostly on fabrics that are not easily available," he then said, resting his hands in his lap. "It should not be a great problem to provide you with fabric no one else has; in that sense this travel should provide you with good insight into what sorts of goods I am able to procure, or might procure should you order something that I would not available right away. I have made provisions for some very specific and expensive types of fabric this time, so I am taking additional care to keep it secret from my competitors."

"Ah, and yes, those are the King's Rangers," he nodded and then waved his hand as if to brush it away. "The best they might be, but it was so difficult to get even just a couple of them for this trip, but the persistence paid off." Firdaus rolled his eyes slightly in annoyance like a man who was used to getting his way no matter what. It was also his belief that money could by almost anything, and it frustrated him if there was something he could not buy in a jiffy.

"Now, what is that?" he exclaimed, clutching at his handkerchief and pressing it to his forehead nervously, when he leaned closer to the window to catch a glimpse of the galloping horse and the trail of dust. Frowning he kept peering out the window in hopes of seeing what the disturbance was all about, as if sudden fear had struck him. "I hope there is no trouble to delay our travel," he said as means to justify his fear, glancing sideways at the lady. "I don't think my suppliers would be happy if I came late to the meeting point."

Tirdinen Duinion

Pele's words invoked even more curiosity, as well as thoughtfulness. Duinion was going to ask more about what she thought was going on, but then she decided to let her horse run for a bit. He smiled, nodding at the comment that his horse seemed calmer. "He is also a bit older, I think." He replied, glancing down at the calmer grey horse. Storm wasn't so old as to be considered 'elderly', but he had calmed significantly since his youth, it would seem. Duinion smiled faintly to watch Pele race off to the tree and back. There was little chance of danger here, but he still couldn't help a habitual scan of the horizon, especially near the tree, just in case. It never hurt to be safe rather than sorry.

It was little surprise, of course, that no dangers were lurking near or behind the tree, nor in the grasses or anywhere. It was the Pelennor, after all, hardly a dangerous place. As expected, Pele made it back without any trouble and Duinion was glad to see that she looked to have enjoyed herself. "It's a fine day," he remarked, once she had rejoined him. "Temper seems eager to enjoy it, and I can hardly blame him." he looked over at the merchant wagons. "Are you expecting any sort of trouble?" He wondered quietly, frowning. What was so interesting about this particular merchant? He had initially thought this would simply be an 'easy' sort of mission, but now it sounded like maybe it might not be so simple. He also couldn't help wondering about the 'extra help' she had mentioned earlier, but he figured if Pele wanted him to know more, then she would tell him. It might be best not to ask too much, in case anyone nearby overheard things they weren't supposed to hear.

Kaylin - in disguise as Hirilfael of House Luinamath

She adopted a mostly unperturbed composure during their travels. While she found it terribly confinding to be cooped up in the carriage for most of the day - with a sweaty merchant who was trying to sweet talk her into becoming a valued customer, no less - she kept telling herself that Hirilfael of House Luinamath would not be a restless person. No, Hirilfael would be someone used to travelling from the luxury of a carriage, rather than a restless and impetuous ex-soldier turned Ranger.

When the evening set in, Firdaus called for a halt and the servants who'd come with him started setting up tents. One of them started on their meal, and Kaylin would be lying if she'd later claimed that part of the journey hadn't had its charms.
While she had to take care not to offer her help to anyone, and to look slightly bored and very disinterested in the work of 'the help', she noted Firdaus was busying himself with his own matters for a few moments, and she could take the time to make eye contact with Pele, who was finally drawing up her horse nearby.

The moment was rather funny. Kaylin didn't look much like her usual self, after all, in an elaborate dress and with black hair, jewelled up and acting the way she was. She had even adopted a different walk, with that sort of glide that rich, noble women all seemed to perfect. She shot Pele a rather recognizable grin when their eyes crossed, however, and she even shot a quick wink at Duinion, before Firdaus seemed to remember that catering to Hirilfael would be crucial to his plans to earn more money.

Tirdinen Duinion

The trip, thus far, was fairly boring. It was a good thing, of course, but still boring nonetheless. Storm seemed to agree, and Duinion almost wondered if he ought to have borrowed a horse from the stables, rather than using this one. He was more used to pulling the dairy cart than going on ranger missions, but hopefully it would be alright for the old horse. Since they were actually there to guard the merchant's wagons, not to chat, Duinion focused his attention on their surroundings, watching for threats. Moving a bit ahead of the rest, he hoped in that way to catch any potential dangers before the merchant ran into them. He wasn't sure whether bandits would be troubling them this near to the walls, but it never hurt to be cautious.

At last, the group stopped for the night. Taking a look around, Duinion wanted to make sure they were camping in a suitable place, before moving to unsaddle Storm and let him begin grazing the nearby grass and stuff. Once his horse was taken care of, the ranger went looking for his captain. As he approached Pele, he couldn't help noticing the dark haired lady who had accompanied the merchant, and wondered about her. She had, oddly enough, just grinned at Pele, and then.. was he imagining things or did she just wink at him? He paused, rather caught off guard as he tried to make sense of this. A high born noblewoman such as that surely wouldn't deign to give him a second glance, yet he was fairly sure he hadn't imagined it.

"Who is she?" He spoke softly, glancing at Pele. He was fairly sure he'd never seen her before, but judging from the way she'd grinned at Pele, it seemed she might know her. "I thought we were only escorting the merchant... not..well, whoever she is." He added with a tiny frown, concerned as well as a little confused. Judging from her fancy gown and all the jewels, he guessed the woman to be some sort of rich nobility, and unused to traveling, and furthermore, not very wise, if there was truly a threat of bandits upon this road. Or else, she had heard there would be rangers guarding them and had complete faith in their ability to defend her from such a threat, but that seemed quite risky, to him.

An Unexpected Delay
Ranger Trainee Romeran
At the Gates of Minas Tirith
(Open to All)

It was a cold morning, cold but sunny. The lack of cloud cover meant that it was even particularly cold despite the sun. Romeran woke up shortly after sunrise. He dressed warmly for he planned to be out for most of the day. He put on a long sleeved wool tunic in a dark green, belted at the waist, and wore tall leather riding boots. The previous day he had requested leave to take one of the horses and make a short patrol around the southern half of the Rammas Echor. Ostensibly it was for riding practice and to become more familiar with the Pelennor Fields and the surrounding areas. While Romeran certainly planned to undertake these things, he was quite excited at the opportunity to take a look around and maybe stop in a few places if they looked interesting. The days had generally been long and hard training and he hoped that a ride along the Rammas would be a perfect recourse.

The mess hall was quiet in the morning when Romeran arrived and he helped himself to some eggs and bacon with toast. He was comfortable in the kitchen by now, having spent a good deal of time now helping and learning from Sergeant Pete, and in return the sergeant had been quite happy to let Romeran have leave over the kitchens. Romeran cleaned up after himself and grabbed a few pieces of salted pork and hard cheese, he was only planning on being out for the day and hoped that perhaps he'd be able to find an inn for lunch but it was always a good idea to be prepared, as Duinion had always remarked.

With food in hand, Romeran returned to his quarters to gather his things. Since the trip was not planned to be long, Romeran brought only a few things. His wool ranger cloak he wore, as it was cold, and in a small satchel he brought the rations from the kitchen, a tinderbox, his whetstone, a small piece of linen cloth in case he needed to bandage a wound, a water skin, and some string and leather cord. At his belt he wore his long knife, strapped horizontally behind his back and at his right hip he brought his single-handed axe which featured a small hammer on the reverse side, the axe itself was bearded and the head was relatively small, the haft was straight and proportionately long but these features made it both an excellent melee and throwing weapon in addition to a useful tool and Romeran took both his axe and knife almost everywhere.

The stable hand welcomed Romeran as he arrived, Romeran had enjoyed whenever he was able to ride the horses. Rangers didn't get to work with dogs, or at least he had not done so yet, and he missed not being able to have working dogs, such as the sheepdogs at his farm, throughout the day. He took solace in the ranger's use of horses, and made efforts to visit the stables when he could. Romeran was a passable rider, at least sufficient enough to get from one point to another, even on more tenuous terrain such as an untilled field, but he wouldn't consider himself a skilled rider and certainly no mounted fighter.

"I jus' brought in Daisy from 'er breakfast" the stable hand said with a grin. "Would it be too much to ask if I might take Daisy out today? I have leave to patrol the southern portion of the Rammas" Romeran asked. The first time that Romeran had gone to the stables he the stable had nearly spat out the drink -- water he claimed -- when he looked at the size of Romeran. Most of the other rangers, though several of them were quite tall, were not as broad as Romeran and so the horses in the stables had been largely of the swift and agile variety. It wasn't that Romeran needed a draft horse, horses were stronger than many people gave them credit for, but the stable-hand had initially been concerned about finding an appropriately sized horse.

Daisy, the roan mare which they had eventually found for Romeran, was a slightly ironic name for the large mare. Daisies were of course small and delicate little flowers which littered many grassy fields. Daisy on the other hand was a roan colored mare who was particularly large. She had been named because of her personality, she was calm and polite as a daisy and was the last horse you'd see charging off into the fields or not returning when called. In this way Romeran and Daisy were a good match, both large and potentially unwieldy in tight quarters, but stalwart, even tempered, and kind. Romeran had immediately bonded with the horse, who seemed to detect a kindred spirit. " 'course ye can lad" the stable hand said "I'll go and get 'er bit and saddle ready, jus' wait here"

Only briefly did Romeran stand waiting at the stables before Daisy came trotting in being led by the reigns. The stable hand brought Daisy outside into the entrance area and waited for Romeran to mount. Despite his large size, Romeran was nimble in the saddle and, after placing his left foot in the stirrup, was able to quickly hop his right leg over. Daisy showed no signs of discomfort as the large man sat in the saddle and she shook her head almost impatiently, eager to set off on whatever they were doing. Romeran patted her on the side of the neck and accepted the reigns "I'll be back before nightfall and will make sure to give her a good clean and brush down before I set her back to you" he said, Romeran knew that they appreciated when the rangers went out of their way to take care of the horses, even if there were stable hands employed to care of them.

Daisy snorted impatiently and Romeran let out a soft chuckle, and tapped his heels, clicking his tongue and off they set down the streets towards the front gate of Minas Tirith. Romeran planned to make out of the main gate and follow the road eastward until the Rammas and then turn south and follow the wall until the southern road. Daisy's shoes clicked and clacked on the stone road as they made their way down to the gates. It was still early and only a few people were about the street, mostly going about their business. One or two of them gawked at Romeran as he and Daisy walked down the street, but mostly people did not may him much mind.

(OOC: Feel free to join Romeran at any point. He will go towards the eastern gate of Rammas Echor, turn down towards the southern gate and back up to the city. At some point there will be an unexpected delay)

Erynneth Raedor

The light breeze ruffled her hair, playing with the loose part that hung down her back. Two slim braids wrapped around, one from each side, and met together at the back of her head. The rest hung loosely down her back. Erynneth was trying to remember all of the things her father had told her about archery, tips to help improve her aim. She drew back her bow, significantly smaller and lighter-weight draw than his, and took a slow, deep breath. The grass in the field before her swayed with the breeze, rusting softly. Ahead, the orc stood, menacing and ugly, turned ever-so-slightly away from her. She lined up the shot, trying to calm the beating of her heart as she tried to imagine where she wanted the arrow to land. As it turned slightly toward her, Eryn let her arrow fly, catching her breath as soon as she'd released, and watched.

The arrow was just a couple of inches off from where she'd wanted it to go, but she felt pleased, nonetheless. The antler-point tip of her practice arrow had embedded itself into the rib area, or so she imagined, if it had been a real live orc, and not a practice dummy. Little more than a scarecrow, in fact. With a thoughtful gaze from where she stood, Eryn noted how she needed to adjust her aim, and drew another arrow. At her father's recommendation, she'd been trying to focus on the quality of each shot, imagining each one as if it was the only shot she'd get... it helped a bit, to pretend that she was facing a real foe, and not a burlap sack stuffed with hay, with painted-on features, mounted onto a stick. One day, she hoped maybe she'd get her aim perfected enough that she could really just take one shot and hit right where she wanted. But she was a little ways off from that point.

Off in the meadow, the cows were mooing softly as they munched on grass. Eryn ignored them for the most part, her chores finished until evening. Taking a brief glance around, the girl tried to take note of any changes, as her dad often did. She had been watching him more and more lately, trying to pick up different habits that she assumed must be associated with ranger stuff. Nothing looked out of the ordinary, so she chose another arrow from her quiver. It was nearly empty by now. Moving slowly around to a new angle, she drew her string back again, imagining a new scenario, this time she was circling around the enemy, looking for the best shot, trying to sneak up on it. She didn't want to always practice from the same spot, after all, and her father suggested she might try different distances to get a feel for how to adjust her aim accordingly, so she was trying that.

The breeze picked up slightly, toying with her hair, tugging a little at her dress, and she wondered how that would affect her aim, trying to pay attention to what direction it was blowing, and how strong. This shot would be successful, she told herself. It must be successful, or that orc was going to turn around and kill her...

Kaylin
The Pelennor

Asking around got you places. And Kaylin had never been shy.

So she approached the farm the last person had pointed her to, where Erynneth was supposed to live. Humming one of the lighter tunes Thûllir liked to sing, she wasn't encumbered by the weight she was carrying on her back and shoulders. She used to be a soldier, after all, and more heavily armored than she was since becoming a ranger. She still trained in her heavy gear more often than not, since she liked the free, light feeling it gave her without it. Such as today. She'd stuck to leather armor, mostly, the only exception her vambraces today. Kaylin carried her shield and pack on her back and her shortsword at one hip, a long knife at the other. Her long, dark red hair was tied up in a high ponytail.

She spotted someone who looked like Erynneth outside of the farm, holding a bow and shooting at a scarecrow. Chuckling, Kaylin set course for the figure instead of the farmhouse. Falling silent upon her approach - it was never a good idea to startle an archer, she watched Eryn's stance. Duinion had taught her well, it seemed. Well - at least for as much as he was willing to teach her.

Once Eryn had released her arrow, Kaylin grinned and called out to the girl. "Hey, Eryn! You done with your farm work for the day?"

Erynneth

The breeze persisted for a moment, and she hesitated to shoot, being a little unsure how it would affect the arrow. At last, it eased up, and the 'orc' stopped swaying on its pole. Eryn steadied herself, then let go. "Ha! No more ambushes for you, orc." She grinned, seeing that her arrow had buried itself in what would have been the back of its shoulder.

And then she heard a voice behind her, and jumped, whirling around. "Oh... hi." Her face turned a little pink. She should have noticed someone coming up behind her.. and now she had surely been overheard talking to a scarecrow. How embarrassing... she'd only been pretending, of course, but she hadn't expected anyone to be there. After a second, she recognized her, realizing she'd met her before. "Kaylin, how are you?" She grinned, still a bit embarrassed, but pleased to see the friendly ranger, regardless.

Her question registered a second later. "Yes, of course I have," Eryn smiled. "I almost always have the afternoon free. That's when I practice my shooting," She explained, holding her bow up slightly. "It's nice to see you again. Though, if you're looking for my father, he isn't here," She added, assuming the ranger was probably looking for him for some sort of ranger business. "He's gone up into the mountains with Romeran, to find some herbs for the healers. Apparently they're running low on some which are mostly found up there in the higher altitudes."

She cast a wistful glance toward the distant mountains, trying not to feel too jealous. I was hard, but she managed, somewhat. "He probably won't be back for a few days, but if you have a message for him, I'll be sure he gets it."

Somewhere on the Pelennor yet

Pele had taken up a position at the back of their little caravan, allowing Temper enough freedom to snatch some mouthfuls of grass along the sides of the road and so falling even more back. While she kept her eyes and ears open, she did not tense up too much and enjoyed having some time all to herself, even while keeping an eye out on any troubles. She did not worry about any problems from up front, trusting in Duinion's ability to spot even the slightest suspicious thing. When the carriages had gone ahead some ways, Pele urged her horse to catch up again, letting him have a spot of faster paces.

Eventually Firdaus seemed tired of travelling, and his servants set about preparing the living quarters and a meal. For a few more moments Pele remained on high alert, observing the immediate surroundings along with Duinion, and then finally approached the others, yet keeping a reasonable distance from the annoying merchant. Only now she took a proper look at what Kaylin had made herself out to be. Slipping out of the saddle, she tilted her head curiously and then returned the grin heartily, before leading the horse aside to take care of it.

"What do you mean by who is she? A high-born travel companion of the merchant, no less," Pele responded to Duinion's question in a serious tone, and then laughed. "Why, yes, it was just the merchant and his crew at first, but didn't I tell you I recruited some help? She's one of our own, but you'd do well not to let it show. The merchant shouldn't be aware of it, so..." The captain's eyebrow rose meaningfully, and then she could not keep back a quiet laugh at Kaylin's masterful play. As far as she could see, Firdaus was all but bending himself over backwards to earn her attention. Casting another look over her shoulder at Kaylin Pele laughed again, and then set about unburdening her horse.

Image

When they had stopped to set up the camp, Firdaus had gone over to the wagon which was filled with his merchandise and seemed to look through it as if making preparations for trading which would soon take place. He counted and marked something in his notes, then counted again, at times frowning and looking thoughtfully. Eventually he seemed more or less satisfied with his cargo, and could relax - or rather turn his attentions once again to his unexpected travel companion.

"Lady Hirilfael," he said as he came up, "I have ordered a tent to be prepared for you with the most comfortable bed that can be procured on the road. And the evening meal will be prepared soon. I expect us to arrive at the village tomorrow, and then I am sure we will be able to have a proper roof over our heads, so to say." He turned slightly towards the fire and breathed in the scent of meat roasting on the spit. His round face reflected eager expectation of the mentioned meal, even though he had been snacking on dainties almost all the way.

Kaylin
The Pelennor

When Erynneth explained that Duinion wasn't there, and wouldn't be returning from a trip to the mountains for at least several days, Kaylin nodded.

"All the better," she said, unslinging her pack - which upon further inspection had another attached. Kaylin removed the second one and threw it at Eryn's feet. "It's probably best your father doesn't find out, anyway." She raised an eyebrow. "Since you're thinking of becoming a Ranger, but your last experience with places other than the City and the Pelennor was when you were but a child and scared... I thought it would be good for you to find out if you still find it so scary you can't function properly, or just scary enough to function on higher alert." She paused, tyring to figure out what Eryn's reaction would be by her expression. "Interested?"

Kaylin gestured at the pack at the girl's feet. "If so, put that on, unless you have proper gear back at the farm." Inside, Erynneth would find a chainmail shirt, a leather jerkin, and a simple weapons belt that would hold whatever blade she might want to bring. "I can't take you along without some protection, so I figured it was best to come prepared. Regardless of whether you use these items are not, I suggest you fill the pack with some supplies and spare things instead. Osgiliath isn't exactly a few farms over." She slanted her head, curious to how Erynneth would respond.

Kaylin - in disguise as Hirilfael of House Luinamath
Merchant Escort

She looked at the merchant with only a half-interested expression. "That sounds acceptable, Master Firdaus." In reality, Kaylin was flabbergasted at what truly wealthy people could arrange for themselves on the road, through servants and wagons filled with... stuff. Not that she needed it, or wanted it even - but dang, was it different! And comfortable! Would Firdaus even know what it was like to sleep with nothing but a thin bedroll between his back and the earth?

Waiting for a stool to be brought to her before sitting down to dinner, Hirilfael made a show of watching the two Rangers, off a ways. "Tell me, Firdaus," she mused, folding her hands together, "You could have gotten any type of escort, I imagine. Why did you specifically enlist Rangers?" Her grey-blue eyes turned back to the merchant. "Curiosity? Or perhaps you are expecting something to happen that is beyond the skills of regular caravan guards?"

Tirdinen Duinion

Pele's initial response left Duinion slightly more puzzled than before, but when she laughed and reminded him about her having 'recruited help' he gave a nod of understanding. Before, he'd thought she only meant 'help in getting the merchant to get going' but now he realized. "Of course," He answered softly. "I don't know her, but that's little surprise. There are many of this new order of rangers which I don't know," He commented, thoughtful about that. "I won't let on," He promised with a tiny smile. It was good to know that they had one of their own in such a position as that, although he wondered why it seemed necessary. There seemed to be more going on than what he'd first thought, and he wondered what Pele suspected.

"Are we going to be setting a watch?" He inquired, glancing around the area. The merchant might prefer that they were watching, he thought, so he was prepared to do so if necessary. His glance landed upon the servants cooking, and another question occurred to him that seemed almost as important. "Are we expected to prepare our own food, or will we be partaking in the meal with them?" He wondered, frowning slightly. He had no idea what this merchant would expect, nor what Pele would think best. But it seemed to him that if they were expected to escort the man around on his travels, the least he could do was provide meals for them.

Erynneth

Eryn was momentarily puzzled when Kaylin replied 'all the better'. This visit suddenly took a very intriguing turn, and she tilted her head curiously when the woman continued to say that it was better that her father didn't find out... find out what? Her eyes grew wider, listening as Kaylin proceeded to explain her plan... to go on an adventure! A grin spread across her face. "Really?!" What incredible timing... her father would be gone for days.. she could go off and have a fun adventure and be back before he ever knew.. it was great!

Her surprise grew even more upon taking a look into the pack, finding various equipment. "Wow!" She gasped, pulling out some armor pieces. "Where'd these come from?" She wondered, astonished. She held up the maille shirt, looking it over curiously, then looked at the leather jerkin. A little unsure how it was all supposed to go on, she glanced up at Kaylin again. "How should I put these on?" She asked hesitantly. "I haven't got anything like this, only my bow and arrows." She laid those aside so she could put the armor pieces on, and she could hardly stop smiling once she had gotten the stuff on. It felt so... different, wearing this stuff. She almost felt like a real ranger already!

"How long do you think we'd be gone?" She wondered, unsure if she'd need to make arrangements for someone else to do her chores tomorrow, or if they planned to be back by then. After getting an answer, she nodded, already thinking about what to pack. These days, she usually packed her dad's supplies for him when he was going somewhere, so she had plenty of practice with that, at least. "Alright, I'll be right back!" With that, Eryn took off to quickly throw together a packful of supplies and take care of any necessary details with her aunt. It wasn't long before she returned, grinning ear to ear. She now had a small dagger/big knife in a sheath, hanging from the belt, and carried the pack on her back, filled with whatever supplies she felt would be needed for the length of time Kaylin had said. "Alright! I'm ready for an adventure." She called out as she got closer, hardly able to wait.

"Our current group of Rangers has a very well-rounded set of skills, you'll find. Once you get to know everyone a bit closer," Pele said, laughter still glinting in her eyes as she looked back at Kaylin over her shoulder. "Very convenient for specific tasks and all that."

Having relieved Temper of the saddle, tack and such he fished out the tools from her pack and set about brushing him off to get the dust of the road out of his usually shiny coat. Pele worked in silence for a few moments before looking at the campsite over the horse's back and breathing in the scent of hot food wafting over on the breeze.

"I wouldn't count on him remembering that we also need to eat," Pele said, as she looked at Duinion and rolled her eyes to express her annoyance. "It seems that he considers us well below his station and only cares for the protection we provide him, nothing else. And I think we should still watch, even though we are sort of on a safe ground yet. What would you prefer - should we just take half a night each, or split it up and change more often?"

Image

It seemed that having everything done for him by the servants was the most normal thing for Firdaus, and he sat contentedly enjoying the fresh air. Even though the carriage was rather comfortable, it was still a rather enclosed space, and he ended up feeling all the bumps and rocks on the road. The table was set before them soon enough, even with a table cloth, though it was simpler than back at home. When their seats were brought, Firdaus waited for Hirilfael to sit down first, before plopping down himself.

He found the lady to be very perceptive, and her interest in the Rangers unsettled him somewhat. Picking up a bit of roast meat, he munched on it as he pondered of how much he could entrust her. He was not yet fully convinced that she would become his customer, and what if she gave away his secrets? But then again - perhaps sharing some things would serve to further attract her to secure a good business?

"Well, you see..." he began, lowering his voice cautiously. "This business trip - I will be getting very good fabrics. And making contacts outside my usual network. I don't really expect anything out of ordinary to happen, my lady, but just to be on the safe side. Other involved parties might not be very happy that I am setting up new contacts, so better make sure they don't interfere." Firdaus cast a sideways glance at his travel companion to see whether such a roundabout explanation would satisfy her curiosity.

To make a further better impression on the prospective customer, Firdaus called over one of the servants. "Take two bowls and bring those Rangers some stew... and a bit of meat and bread, suppose," he instructed, and then said to Hirilfael, as if to explain why he cared to do such a thing at all: "Gotta make sure they are fed and willing to protect our backs."

Iole Ishen and Arkadhur / ”Lowendir”
A tent in the fayre grounds >>>> the abandoned Farmhourse, Pelennor Fields
with Cali Dringolben @Rillewen

He scrutinised the pair as though they were some work of art hung on the ground. From a certain angle the two unconscious young woman seemed almost peaceful. Arkadhur crouched down, knees bent but both feet flat, to better gauge the state of them. Then drew up, slowly, as though consequences of his being found here, with them, had only now occurred to him. A half moment later the Umbarian had fled the tent and stood, as though he was like to vomit, all about the grass outside. He did not like this having to do dirty work himself. He had believed that he had outgrown it. Usually Keket took care of the bodies, and Arkadhur only had to exploit the desperate relatives who were seeking any news of their lost loved ones. They begged, they cried, they pleaded, and he got to be the one to tell them what they wanted to hear. That there was something they could do. That there was a way they might be reunited with those seeming beyond all reach. All they had to do was what he told them. All they had to do was give him all he asked. Hope .. they clung to it, and it contaminated any iota of common sense. Most were willing to overlook the likelihood that reunion would be in the cold cradle of death. He had been all too willing to forego too much thought of that himself. He enjoyed being the one they could not do without. He had fashioned himself as a saviour of sorts, and it was not a role he had hankered to retire.

The back of his hand trembled as it swept his dry mouth and he spat once what poor dribble of determination he could into the grass. Innocent as it appeared, though it was not. Countless of his peers had been cut down here, their blood enriching the same soil that he now stood on. Those who had marched this far from where they had begun, for the hope that they might make a difference. Even now, children of Gondor laughed, stood all around the ruined section of grass where no fair thing would ever grow. They stood on tiptoes, they teetered, and they dared one another to dip a toe into the darkness. Arkadhur shook his head and retreated back inside his temporary sanctuary. There was no such animal as innocence. Only the opportunity for corruption. Put any person in a position where they had to make the most horrific choice, and it would more often than not, surprise even they, as to what they were capable of. He had put people into that sort of position. But how far had he had much of a choice himself ? A fleeting glance toward the White City considered how things had gone at the dungeon. Not that he could care, at that, whether Ademar, Shamara, even Lowendir were all caught at their ruse and thrown behind bars for the trouble. A nice tying up of loose ends that would be, and no mistake. Not one of them could mark him for it.

But he still had to get out of the gate. Out of Gondor. It had not been far enough, as the number of complications which had risen up, had proved.

It was fine though. It would soon be fine. He still had a few tools at his disposal. At the farm. At his very feet … did he even have a choice ? He could run but he would not get far without a little leverage. He had not gotten as far as he had in this life, without no small amount of leverage. The blood of an undertaker, the blood of a nurse, the blood of a blacksmith … all useful ‘acquaintances’ for him to make good use of. Still, he still had to see them removed as well as he. He had not anticipated more than one at a time. Could he still walk away from this ? Perhaps not, when a wagon pulled up just outside his coloured, silk lair. Perhaps .. not.

There were clothes in the tent. A whole trunk of their like. Doubtless these were costumes, which meant there would come folk to make use of them. Did he have time ? Opportunity. A slow shake of his head recalled his own thoughts. There was naught but opportunity. And as a crowd and calls began to gather around one of the fayre vendors – some sort of debate or argument was his opportunity. Glancing outside, he found the nearest wagon, close by the barrels that had been brought to take litter and garbage. By days end they would be filled by bones, and streamers, and who knew what besides. But it was early still. And he was less interested in the barrels, but what had brought them to him. Nobody was watching, nobody was likely to loiter close by the place where filth of the fayre’s revellers would be collected. The excitement at the stall was drawing all attention away. It was time. To make his away. One last glance considered the two unconscious women. The trunk of clothes, .. for the first time in his life, Arkadhur decided to disguise not himself, but some other. All the time it took to carry one, with all the care considered as though she were his dozing daughter in his arms, to the abandoned wagon; all that while he was worried for the fallen other yet lain in the tent. And the time it took to bear that second to join the first, he was convinced that one or either or the both of them would wake. But they did not. Even as he drew a horse away from it’s roped enclosure, and readied the means to make a run. If it were to be his last, he would not be taken down alone.

He met many and passed them on his way. Often tipping his newly selected hat, all cordial and smiles. There was some sort of thrill and equal measure of terror in riding through the middle of these folk, completely under their noses, with one sleeping beauty laid out across the back of the wagon, swaddled in blankets. He had laid a straw hat over Cali’s oblivious face, her wrists bound beneath her back, hard hidden against her ride. He had poured as much as he had left of the small cordial he had already administered to Iole earlier that morning, through the slightly parted lips as the blacksmith’s daughter. But it had not been but a merest drop .. The dark hair of the undertaker’s daughter meanwhile swallowed his shoulder, where her head lay, in apparent slumber beside him as well. His hand leant a knife ready to raze her hidden waist, his other held the reins. His victims each rocked gently with the motion of the wagon, but they did not wake as far as he could tell. Dressed up in the bonnets and aprons over their dresses, courtesy of that trunk of acting troupe costumes, there was just enough alteration about their appearance to raise doubt in anyone who might recall what they had been wearing …before they disappeared.

It was a good hour before the traffic thinned, and all heading to enjoy the last day at the fayre, were far too excited to pay heed to the sole wagon who seemed to be heading from all the frivolities. By the time he reached the abandoned farmhouse, Arkadhur had not seen sight of any chance be witness for an hour at the least. He had not rushed, he had not dared to risk awakening his precious cargo. Much less draw attention to them. Not sure how far the knife would go, if it came to that. Save to intimidate the one perhaps, by threat to subdue the other. If they should chance to awake. Surprise, confusion, disorientation, would give him hopefully as much of an advantage as he would require. Still, he liberated a most lengthy sigh of relief when he recognised his recent haunt. The farmhouse.

Until he checked the root cellar. Then all manner of relief shrivelled up in his throat to choke him. That sick familiar feeling which saw his swagger sunk, his sails riven. And it was not fear that either of the two unconscious girls he’d left bound on the wagon could make their escape. He had hauled Iole over the back of the seat, propped her and Cali against one another, back to back, and tethered them so. Bleary and confused would consciousness find them, so the girls could barely rally hope to escape him easily in that state, even should they wake.

But the woman he had gathered up and brought here first, the wife of the actual Lowendir … She was nowhere to be seen. Not where he had left her. Bloodied ropes betrayed the memory of her, and he raised them up now in both hands, eyes wide in confusion all his own. Then coming abruptly back to his feet, he cast the ruined remnants from him as though they were snakes. Alarmed that his trap may now have somehow suddenly turned against him, Arkadhur fled a scramble on all fours back up the stone steps and spilled back into the world. Where he would not be cornered. He rounded with flailing arms, casting wild sight about the horizon to seek for any sign .. for any thing at all.

And then, as common sense took up with reason to bolt away, the man dropped to his knees anew in the dry grass and the gravel. His face sought the ground even as an inhuman bellows ripped out of his chest to rumble like embittered thunder from his throat. Hands, empty, formed fists and shook in trembling, angry terror at the apathetic sky.

Back stowed in the stolen wagon, Iole’s pale eyes flickered once, as she struggled to, with a groan, raise her head upright. And wonder at how vastly the world had changed since last she had looked upon it.
All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not touched by the frost.

Kaylin
The Pelennor

Erynneth's grin brought about one of her own. While Duinion might feel like strangling her later, Kaylin was pretty sure that grin was already worth the trouble she might be in.When the girl asked where the armor came from, Kaylin shrugged. "The armoury," she said, as if it were no big deal. As long as she brought them back, it wouldn't be. Instead of physically lending a hand, she verbally directed Erynneth here and there, where needed, as she put on the mail and the jerkin. When Eryn had the pieces on, Kaylin narrowed her eyes in a brief inspection, and then nodded her approval. It didn't take long before Eryn's smile bounced back off of her own face.

"Well, I guess it'll take us about four hours to walk to Osgiliath," she estimated. "So to make it worth while the trip, I would say we will be back tomorrow evening, at the earliest. But no later than the day after tomorrow - I only cleared my schedule for the next two days." She slanted her head, and her blue-grey eyes sparkled at Erynneth. "That will suffice, yes?"

While Eryn went back to the farm to pack, Kaylin sat down in the grass for a bit. She leaned back on the palms of her hands, raising her face to the sun that peeked between the clouds. The more she thought about it, the more likely it seemed that Duinion might want to strangle her later. Then again, it depended mostly on what would or wouldn't happen, she supposed. Just like no one would care if she returned the mail and the jerkin in the same state in a few days. Kaylin wasn't one to overthink these things, however. Today, life was good. Why not enjoy it, and take Eryn along for the ride?

Upon the girl's return, Kaylin therefore grinned broadly. "I like that enthusiam! You'll need it, we have a few hours of walking ahead of us, after all." As a ranger, you needed to be able to walk long distances, and from Minas Tirith to Osgiliath wasn't that far at all, considering. "Don't forget your bow and arrow..." If they were to get into a scrap... "I'm counting on you shooting us something to eat at some point."
And with that, Kaylin led Eryn off and away. "So tell me - what has your dad taught you, exactly? You only mentioned archery earlier. Is that limited to target practice? Or have you shot at game already as well?"

Kaylin - in disguise as Hirilfael of House Luinamath
Merchant Escort

As Firdaus answered her question, Hirilfael busied herself with the food in front of her, making sure to eat slowly and properly despite her hunger. While the merchant spoke, Hirilfael nodded in thought every once in a while, but without looking at him.

Meanwhile, Kaylin was picking his words apart as much as she could. It all sounded strange to her. The more she spoke with this merchant, the better she understood Pele's suspicions. What kind of contacts did Firdaus even HAVE if he was so worried about them interfering that he felt he needed rangers to protect him? And what would a woman like Hirilfael think about that? Or rather, what would she say if she wanted Firdaus to open up to her?

The noblewoman finished a bite, and then finally looked over at Firdaus. "Best to be safe, rather than sorry, I suppose," she allowed. "I am no stranger to how certain people can become... rash... when enough coin is involved. As your temporary travel companion, I can only be appreciative of such caution."
When he sent food over to Pele and Duinion and explained his actions, Hirilfael nodded in agreement. "A wise move, Master Firdaus." Some flattery never hurt when you were trying to get someone to lower their guard. "They will be setting a watch, I assume?" she asked. Part of her was a bit amused at the question - she knew Pele would set one, of course, given her suspicions for one, but also given her work ethic in general. "I wouldn't want any of your usual... contacts... to surprise us in the middle of the night." She sighed as she put down the spoon one of the servants had brought her, her bowl of stew finally empty. "I find myself rather weary of my travels."

Ademar Androllius (wearing uniform of Lt. of the Watch)
Pelennor - an abandoned, ruined old farmhouse

The day before the events of the Carpe Diem story
(Continuing from here)

The woman was distraught, that was certain. Mar had little patience for distraught women, but he could easily slip into the role of portraying his brother. There was something to be gained here, though he didn't know what, yet. Impulsiveness would have had him simply slay the woman right there, but he wanted to know who she was, where she had come from, and to do that, he would need to convince her that he was a rescuer, and meant her no harm. Maybe later he'd kill her, but for now he wanted information. Aside from the cloth bound around her mouth, there was another serving as a bandage, it seemed, for some injury on her head. Even in the dim light, he could see a dark splotch indicating that the wound had bled through the bandage.

It took only a moment to relieve the woman of the strip of cloth binding her mouth, and he half regretted doing so immediately, as he was quickly met with a barrage of hysterical sobbing. It took some effort on Mar’s part not to tie it back on her, but he wanted to know who this woman was, why Arkhadur had left her here, and anything else he could learn concerning this matter. “Calm down, ma’am,” Mar held back a sigh, slipping into the role of ‘Lieutenant Ric, the nice Tower Guard’. “It’s alright, just take a deep breath and start at the beginning… what happened?” He hadn’t yet formed a plan, but he wouldn’t find out anything useful if the woman was so hysterical he couldn’t understand her through all her sobbing.

“M-My haaandsss!” She wailed, when at last he could understand her, followed by more unintelligible sobbing.
Mar glanced to her hands, figuring she was asking him to untie them. To his surprise, he instead realized her hands were wrapped in bloody rags, which served as bandages. He looked closer and realized she was missing some of her fingers. He couldn’t tell how many, with the bandages on there, but there was little danger of her trying anything with her hands like that. So, continuing the act of a helpful guard, he untied the rope binding her hands, his mind racing with all the various ways this discovery could benefit him. “There, now... do you know who did this to you, ma’am?” He asked, staring with intrigue at her hands. That was Ark’s work, he was sure of it.
“N-no,” She sobbed, sniffling. “He..he seemed..so nice, I just.. I never imagined..” She spent a little while longer sobbing and blubbering while Mar struggled to maintain patience.
"You really shouldn't trust strangers," he commented, with an undertone of irony in his voice. She carried on without seeming to notice,
“He..he started talking to me,” She continued after a moment of sniffling. “And..and… he said my h-husband wanted me to c-come, out here… to meet him…” She was still quite hysterical, struggling to talk without sobbing.

“Ah… you must be the lady we’ve been searching for,” Mar spoke, using the information to spin a tale. “Yes, your husband has reported you missing, we’ve been searching for you for some time now.” He nodded as he began forming an idea. He was wearing the garb of the Watch, after all. He might as well put it to use somehow.
Relief filled the woman’s face as she heard this. “Oh, thank Eru! Is he nearby? Can I see him? Please, I want to see my husband.” Thankfully, she had stopped sobbing as much.
“Soon, of course.” Mar nodded reassuringly. “Can you stand up, ma’am? I need to..get you someplace safe,” He informed her.
“I.. I think so?” She sniffled as Mar helped her stand. “Oh..I..feel so weak,” She swayed.
'All the better,' Mar thought, steadying her. “It’s alright, ma’am. Just take a few steps. How long have you been here?”
“I…I really don’t know,” She sniffled. “Are you going to take me to my husband now? Please, I want to see him,”
“Not just yet,” He informed her, guiding her slowly to the steps. “I think I’d better take you someplace safe, first.” There was that cave he used to play in, not far away, he remembered. No one would ever think to look there, even if they knew about it. And he felt fairly certain that Ark wouldn't know of it. The entrance wasn't easy to find, and even knowing where it was, he used to have a little trouble sometimes, when he used to go there. He'd take her there, then come immediately back here to retrieve that which he had come for in the first place.

“Safe?” She looked at him with wide, wondering eyes.
“Yes, you see... the man who did this to you.. he's still at large." He spun his tale even further. "We're searching for him, but he will now be searching for you. I plan to set a trap for him here, now that I've rescued you, but first, I want to get you someplace where he won't find you."
"But... my husband.." She protested weakly, tears filling her eyes yet again.
'Not more sobbing, please...' Mar thought with an inward sigh. "It's alright, ma'am," he struggled to maintain a patient tone. "He's worried, of course, but he's safe. I'll tell him you've been found, and you'll see each other again as soon as possible." Supporting the injured woman, Mar helped her up the stairs while he spoke with her. "Just trust me," He requested calmly, observing her as she cringed from the bright daylight.

The bloody bandage on her head seemed quite flat, now that he looked at it. Was her ear even there? Perhaps, like her fingers, it had been sliced off. He tilted his head, wondering if he ought to change the bandages. Did he even care? Either way, he preferred to move her someplace where Ark wouldn't find her, not for her safety though. For his own reasons. He could re-bandage her wounds after he got to the cave, and further convince her he was a rescuer who meant to help her, while he gathered a bit more information so he could decide what to do with her. Mar smiled faintly to himself as he began guiding her toward the woods where the cave was. He only wished he could be there to see Ark's face when he returned to find his hostage missing...

Calithildis Dringolben
Carpe Diem
Her head was throbbing. Cali closed her eyes tighter against the pain. Why did she have such a headache? There seemed no sounds around her, and she slowly opened her eyes after a moment. Her brain struggled to piece together what was going on, as she squinted against the brightness that streamed in through the window. Who had drawn the curtains open? She hadn't had enough sleep. She wanted to call out and tell someone to please let her sleep a little longer; her head was hurting. Her mouth felt strange though, and there was an odd taste in her mouth. More confusion flooded her already-perplexed mind, and she tried to look around. Her range of motion seemed limited, somehow, and she found this baffling as well. 'Where am I?'

While one half of her brain tried to cling to the traces of whatever dream had been playing in her mind, the other half was fighting to return to full-consciousness. The second half was winning, and Cali began to notice an absence of ringing in her ears soon after, and others sounds took its place instead. This was not her bed. Why was she here? What was here, for that matter? She blinked a few times, groggy and confused, and wondered if there was some sort of wild animal nearby.. what was that roar? That wasn't her ears, it was something not far away. What was she doing in a wagon? That question returned to her, then more flooded in after it as her brown gaze took in the strange apron she was wearing. Lifting her throbbing head slowly, carefully, Cali looked at her clothing, more confused than ever. She didn't own anything like this. She didn't remember putting anything like this on. What was the last thing she did remember doing?

Suddenly, it all came rushing back. The Fayre. Iole... finding her friend fainted. The stranger..what was that name he'd told her? Lo..Londir? She remembered bending over Iole, trying to wake her, and then a burst of pain. Her breath caught in her lungs as she recalled that moment. The pain in her head assured her that it was not imagined. Something happened back in that tent... no, not something. Someone; him. The stranger.. He had struck her? But why? She wanted to raise her hand and massage the back of her head, but found her arms pinned. She pulled with slightly more urgency, and found, to her alarm, that her arms were bound. She glanced down, and realized that there was someone else with her, in the same predicament, it seemed. Turning her head as far as she could, Cali could just see that the other young woman there, back to back with her. She seemed to be stirring as well, and Cali felt hope flare up. "Iole?" She murmured softly, feeling oddly weak at the moment. "Iole, is that you? Are you alright?" She whispered, fearing their captor may still be nearby, but she was still quite worried about her friend, despite the fact they were obviously both in some sort of danger, now.

Tirdinen Duinion

Duinion smiled slightly, nodding in reply to Pele's comment. "I've already met a couple others that I didn't know before. And there were many others who came and spoke to me after.. well, this," he lightly brushed the Tirdinen badge that Pele had pinned on him. "They seem friendly, at least. That's nice, and I look forward to meeting the rest." He could smell the food cooking, reminding him it had, by now, been some time since he ate breakfast. He'd turned down those apples Pele kept offering him; now he was starting to regret that.

Thinking for a moment, Duinion considered what Pele had asked. "I think I'd prefer taking it in halves, but if you prefer shifts, that's alright." he shrugged. He suspected that if his sleep was broken up into shifts, he wouldn't be very well-rested the next day, nor would he be quite as alert than if he had just stayed awake for half the night. Yet, she was the captain and the one to make the final decision.

Noticing one of the merchant's servants approaching them with a tray, he nudged Pele slightly to draw her attention toward him, wondering what was going on. It was with some surprise that he heard the servant declare that he had been sent to bring them their supper. "Thank you," Duinion responded, still rather surprised, accepting a bowl of stew and a piece of bread, and meat. He glanced at Pele with a raised eyebrow. "I guess you were wrong." He commented, wondering a bit about this surprising turn of events, until he thought of a possible explanation. After the servant had gone, he spoke quietly to Pele, "My guess is that our...friend there must have made the suggestion that he give us food." Knowing that she was a ranger, it made sense... she would take care of them in whatever way she could, he imagined, even if that was merely making suggestions that would ultimately help them.

@Arnyn

Erynneth

"This is going to be so great," Eryn grinned. "I spoke with my aunt, she wasn't terribly happy but she gave in eventually." She hesitated, deciding not to mention that she had told her a slight fib about where she was going. "I've got to be back no later than the day after tomorrow." She figured that timeline ought to definitely be enough. She didn't mention the extra chores she'd promised to do in exchange for this unexpected time off, but that would be fine. She'd enjoy this adventure while it lasted. "Lead the way!" She was pretty sure she had everything she'd need, and couldn't wait to get started.

Laughing a little at mention of needing the enthusiasm, she grabbed up her bow and quiver. "I can't believe this is really happening!" She almost thought she might be dreaming. Kaylin's question, however, caused her to pause and think. "Well," She frowned a little. "He's never let me shoot at anything but the target, really." She admitted. "But I think I could manage to hunt, if I have to. I've heard Daddy talk about it, and I've listened to him when he's teaching others, like Rome.. when he lets me be around for his lessons." She shrugged as she walked along with Kaylin, adjusting her pack slightly. "I've tried a bit of hunting though, out in the field when he's away." She added, trying to think back. "I shot a coyote a few months ago, it was trying to bother the cows and take a calf." She grinned, feeling a bit proud of herself for that.

"Yes, they are friendly, can indeed be very good friends, and reliable," Pele agreed, "Once you get to know them. I find that it makes work easier, and also rather comforting in a way." Letting the horse graze on the grass, Pele tossed her bedroll near a big oak tree intending to settle down there for the night. A warm smile reflected in her eyes, though it barely touched her lips when she noted his seeming pride in the badge. She had chosen not to wear her uniform, and even her badge making it more difficult to identify her, and perhaps this was the reason Firdaus was so dismissive when dealing with her, though she suspected he was like that with anyone who was not his customer or partner.

"Half sounds good. Want to take the first half? I'd be more alert towards morning rather than now," Pele said, turning around to find that the merchant had actually thought of feeding them. She offered a smile and a nod in thanks to the servant, and settled down to enjoy the hot meal. "I don't mind being wrong in this case," she laughed. "At least saves us living on dry rations for days. Or going through the trouble of hunting down some game and preparing it. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised she said something, or perhaps the guy is just trying to do everything in his power to win her over."

Image

"Ah yes.. coin. Some can be very controlling over it," Firdaus remarked, as he stretched out his bowl for a refill of stew. "That is why I am looking for ways to expand without someone always wanting to look into my purse over the shoulder, you know. A bit risky, but might be well worth the risk. A very calculated risk, though." He glanced at his travel companion wondering whether his risk appetite would not bee too much for her.

"Should come easier once proper links have been established, away from the grasp of the city rats," he sighed, and then wondered whether things were similar in the fabric markets of Dol Amroth. "There are people who want to impose their rules of business on everyone, for their own benefit. I won't have that. Making my own niche, and want to trade freely."

"I don't expect that they will bother coming outside the city to steal coin from me," he sounded rather convinced. "So you don't have to worry, m'lady. I'm sure you will be able to sleep peacefully in your tent; and while it is not exactly the queen's bed, the mattresses should be comfortable. I'll see about the watch, just in case." Setting aside the spoon, he waved his hand for attention and called out: "Hey, Rangers!"

Tirdinen Duinion

"I know a few, of course," he mentioned, shrugging. "Unalmis, and Romeran, of course." He paused, then added, "And you." He grinned at that. "And I recently met ranger Isys." He realized that was it. All of those whom he had once known and worked with were now gone, either dead or retired, or doing other work, or else had moved elsewhere. He missed them, especially those who were gone for good. But there were plenty of others to meet, and befriend, now, he just had to actually meet them. And get to know them.

"Yes, the first half sounds good to me," He answered, nodding as Pele's question pulled him out of his thoughts. That was quite preferable to him, actually, and he was glad that Pele seemed to prefer the second half. Taking his food, he found a log to sit on and was just about to start eating when a call from the merchant drew his attention.
'Hey, rangers!'

Duinion paused with a spoon halfway to his mouth, and glanced at Pele. "I think he wants our attention. Should we give it, or make him deign to walk over here to speak to us?" He asked with a slight grin. He'd just sat down to eat, so he would really rather take the time to enjoy it... and besides, so far he had not shown any sign of having heard the man, perhaps they could pretend they didn't hear him, or something. "Who is this merchant, anyway?" he asked absently of Pele, quietly. "What does he sell?" Duinion wondered, taking a bite of his stew. He had known a few merchants before, and while he enjoyed a chance to get out and do a bit of traveling, it did seem unusual to ask for a ranger escort. He hadn't had much chance to ask about him while they were traveling, so he thought it might be good to at least learn the man's name, before he may have to speak with him.

Kaylin
The Pelennor

"Good," Kaylin said thoughtfully after listening to Erynneth's story about the coyote. "Well. I'm glad you could come." She eyed the girl, and a grin grew on her face. "You look eager. Have you ever walked as far in one stretch before? Are you used to it, or will we need to contend with blisters upon our arrival in Osgiliath?" " The redheaded ranger fell silent for a bit as they walked, but it didn't take long before she decided something and spoke again. "I think we should be friends. Deal?"

They walked and chatted for a few hours, and about halfway on the way to Osgiliath, still within the Rammas Echor and on the Pelennor Fields, Kaylin halted after finding a nice-looking place for a break. "Let's rest up a bit and eat something." They had been walking at a steady pace for nigh on two hours, and approaching the hour most people tended to have their evening meal, after all. "We can go the rest of the way after and still reach the city with time to spare." Kaylin figured she could rope in some of the sentinels in Osgiliath to find a more or less decent place for Erynneth and herself to sleep. She'd figure something out. And if the sleeping situation wasn't ideal, well... that was just one of the realities of being a ranger, right? It wouldn't be bad if Eryn got to experience some of those realities, Kaylin supposed.

"I packed some rolls and cheese, if you want any," she offered, unsure of what Erynneth would have brought. She'd brought a few apples as well, but preferred to hold onto those in case she or Eryn would get peckish later in the evening.

Erynneth

Eryn thought about Kaylin's question. Had she ever walked this far? "No, I haven't," She answered, shaking her head. "Last time I came here, I was on a horse. And I was rather young. Nine, actually. We lived a bit closer, then, too." She tilted her head. "I suppose I ran a long way, before I had the horse, but not that far." She supposed her story must sound a little jumbled, but she didn't really think Kaylin would be terribly interested in those details, and so she kept all that to herself for now. She grinned at the ranger. "I hope I won't have blisters. I walk and run around the fields all the time though. I suppose we'll find out, huh?"

Her grin widened as she heard the ranger suggest that they ought to be friends. "I think that's an excellent idea!" She was thrilled. The girl had already come to think of Kaylin as a friendly person, but to think that she wanted to actually consider Eryn her friend... it felt like some sort of honor to hear Kaylin say that. She had very few friends, and most of them were actually rangers, now that she thought of it. Unalmis, Romeran, and now Kaylin, and one or two others who weren't.

It was a lovely day, and it was easy to laugh and chat with Kaylin as they walked. She hardly minded the walking, and the thought that she was having an exciting adventure made her hardly notice if her feet hurt anyway. Eventually her stomach was complaining, though she said nothing. She was determined she'd prove that she could handle whatever any ranger could, and without a single complaint. She didn't have to 'suffer' for very long though, before Kaylin suggested a break for a meal. "That sounds nice," She agreed, setting her pack down. It was rather heavy, but again, no complaints. "I brought some dried meat," Eryn mentioned. "Perhaps we could have a roll with meat and cheese?" She suggested, digging into her pack to find the jerky.

As they ate, Firdaus' servants were setting up tents. Kaylin was impressed that the merchant would actually have brought an extra - although perhaps it was in case something were to happen to his tent that he had brought a spare. His servants had a much smaller tent, which they set up dead last. At the mention of mattresses, she had to hide surprise. That had been more than she would have assumed, even from someone who was turning out to be as posh as Firdaus!

When the merchant said he would see what the Rangers were thinking in terms of setting a watch, Kaylin hid part of her face behind the cup which had been brought out for her to drink from. She had learned enough about Firdaus by now not to be surprised the man had brought wine to this trip, and honestly so far that was one of the best parts of the outing. Other than perhaps unsettling Duinion a bit earlier. She managed a measured smile at that thought, rather than a grin, as she sipped the wine like a noblewoman would. Obviously Pele and Duinion would be taking turns keeping watch, but since she was Hirilfael she wasn't about to touch that comment. She finished her meal then, left only with her drink. Once that was finished, she figured it would be most proper to retire to the tent Firdaus had had arranged for her. And really... the earlier she went to sleep, the sooner morning would come. And with it, perhaps something unexpected!

The Pelennor

Pleased that Eryn would agree to being her friend, Kaylin sat down and opened her pack. "An excellent idea," she responded to Eryn's suggestion, and she traded some rolls and cheese for some of Eryn's meat. "We should reach Osgiliath in a few hours," she said. "Before nightfall, in any case - even if we start taking it slower than we have so far. I could probably get us a half-decent place to sleep for the night." Realizing Erynneth might not know what they could mean, and not wanting to set expectations to high, Kaylin cleared her throat. "Not necessarily meaning comfort, but rather assured safety. You brought extra warm clothing right? For the nights?" It was too late now, but perhaps she should have mentioned that earlier, back at the farm. Some things had just become so obvious to her... Hopefully, Eryn had learned as much from her father already.

"I have been thinking as we walked... Maybe we could cross the river and roam through Ithilien a bit, as well. Chase those old memories away and replace them with new ones?"

At the Gate
@Romeran

Pele
had left the city for the training grounds while it had been still dark, for a bit of an exercise for herself, and to let Temper stretch out his legs. She had let the horse graze around in a patch of grass while she did some stealth training among the trees. She might have sneaked around this way and that, yet it was not too exciting without anyone to track and sneak up on, so she had eventually decided that it was enough after about an hour.

Huddling up in a cloak against the chill of the morning now that she was no longer moving actively, and picking up her sword and light pack with the few provisions she had taken still intact as she had stopped her exercises sooner than expected, Pele settled herself in the saddle and nudged her horse towards the gate of the training grounds, out and back towards the city.

The way back was rather short, so Pele allowed Temper to choose his own speed, and soon found herself holding on as the black gelding galloped towards the city. "Whoa, wait!" she called out, reigning the horse in before they came crashing through the gate - and nearly taking down Romeran and his mount. Curious, Pele guided her horse in a couple circles around him, as a small grin formed on her face.

"Where are you off to this morning, Romeran?"
she greeted him with a question, finally stopping Temper a few feet away for the sake of safety. "Away for a leisurely outing?"

Erynneth

The rolls with cheese and meat were quite good, and Eryn relished the meal for while it lasted. It was possible that their future meals might not be so good, as their supplies ran lower, but hopefully they had enough to last them the couple of days they expected to be out there. She nodded as Kaylin mentioned that she should be able to find them someplace nice to sleep, and then smiled at her addition. "Yeah, I figured." She took a drink of water from her canteen and grinned. "Yeah, I brought warm stuff. I've slept outside plenty of times, don't worry." She assured her new friend.

"Ooh, that sounds fun," She grew excited at the mention of going into the forest. "I've never been there during the daytime, is it much different than at night?" She wondered, then added, "Are there still orcs?" She wondered, remembering hearing frightful tales about the orcs lying in ambush and trying to slaughter people and things like that. Some of those tales she wasn't supposed to have heard, yet she couldn't resist not listening when she heard people relating some of those stories. "Daddy's told me a lot about the forest, how big and pretty it is, but he never lets me go there." She sighed. "So I can't wait to actually see it for real!"

"A few good enough for the beginning," Pele commented on the list of Rangers Duinion had already gotten to know. "I'm sure you'll find the others quite likeable as well. Though watch out for random fits of mischief - those can also happen occasionally and pull you in even if you try to avoid any such things."

She tasted the stew, while still standing, and assessed it as a sign of good cooking, though she would not expect less from people in charge of feeding the ambitious merchant. It seemed though that they would not be left to eat in peace, and Pele narrowed her eyes at Firdaus when he called at them.

"I doubt he'll bother to come over, though some waiting would do him good," she chuckled, and then munched on some bread, as she thought over Duinion's questions. "He sells fabric," she explained after a moment. "Firdaus is his name, apparently he only sells all sorts of fancy fabric only to fancy people. Or that is what I've gathered from seeing his shop and his attitude. Seems to be an arrogant guy."

Pele kept eating for a good while, and observed Firdaus with a corner of her eye. When she saw him getting restless and looking towards his servants, most likely intending to send them over, Pele eventually decided: "I'll go and see what he wants."

"You are setting a watch, are you not?" Firdaus said impatiently even before Pele had managed to reach him. "To make sure everyone is safe at night, yes?"

Pele tilted her head at him, as she finally came close enough to talk comfortably. "An obvious thing to do. Don't worry, Firdaus, we know our work; both - or at least one of us - will always be watching," she assured him. Seeing that he did not appear to have any other questions, she left him to make the last preparations for the night and returned to finish her dinner. "Well, I can't help but feel somewhat envious at the comforts Kaylin will get for the night," Pele laughed, when she had reached Duinion again. "It seems that they have taken along everything that may come in handy to create a proper bedroom in a tent."

Tirdinen Duinion

Duinion laughed lightly, ignoring the impatient merchant who had tried to call them over. "Random fits of mischief," He repeated, amused by that. "Perhaps that's why I get along so well with Unalmis." He grinned. "His uncle was my best friend, growing up, did you know that?" He glanced at the captain. "We got into... well, far more than our share of mischief, in those days." He smiled reminiscently. "I miss that, sometimes." He poked his spoon at a vegetable floating in the stew and thought back about those days, missing the fun adventures the two friends used to have all the time.

He glanced up with a small frown, though, as Pele began to tell him about the merchant. Fabric? At the name she spoke, his stomach sank a little and he gave a slow nod. It had been many years since he heard that name, or thought much about that shop. "Arrogant is right," He muttered, wondering whether the man would recognize, or even remember, him. He'd been fairly young at that time... fourteen, actually. He looked far different, now, from the fourteen year old kid who'd once worked for Firdaus, or at least, for his father. Pele finally got up and went to speak to him, and Duinion watched with slight anxiety, wondering what he was asking, what she was telling him.

"I'm sure she's got the best he can offer her," He answered Pele as she returned. "What did he want?" He wondered, glancing suspiciously after Firdaus after he had finished speaking with Pele. From the time of hearing his name, Duinion had barely poked at his stew, but now tried to make an effort to continue eating. "If.. if it isn't too late," He spoke softly, a little hesitant, "Could I ask a favor?" He glanced at Pele, unsure if he was being silly about this or not. "I'd rather he didn't find out my name.. and who I am." He paused, then added, "He and I have met before, a long time ago," he explained quietly. "And, well... he wasn't exactly very kind to me, and we didn't part on friendly terms. I'd just rather not give him any reason to question my capabilities, if you understand." He shrugged slightly, trying to make light of it, and focused on finishing his stew.
"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

Kaylin - in disguise as Hirilfael of House Luinamath
Merchant Escort

She finally finished her drink, right when Firdaus called out to Pele about setting a watch. Figuring her persona would not pass up on the chance to 'see a Ranger up close', Kaylin had Hirilfael watched Pele with the kind of interest someone might have for an exotic, caged animal. It was probably best that Pele paid no attention to her - that made it easier to pretend they did not know one another. Once her new Captain removed herself from their proximity again, she smiled faintly and adressed Firdaus.

"Thank you, master Firdaus, for the meal." It felt weird to thank someone who had nothing to do with actually preparing it, but she supposed that it how it worked with someone like him. "And for the tent. I believe I shall retire. It has been a long day for me. I trust your Rangers to watch over us." As if they were his Rangers. But she would throw him a bone. Rising from the stool, she brushed at her skirt. "Will one of your servants wake me enough in advance before we need to get going? I will need some time to prepare for the day, especially since I do not have a bedchamber servant with me at present." Once he had assured her, Hirilfael cast a glance at the rangers, off a ways. "Perhaps they would benefit from an extra blanket. I noticed your people bringing quite a few to my tent." She seemed to ponder something. "Goodnight, master Firdaus."

After disappearing into the tent for a while, she came back out with one of the very warm blankets which had been spread out over her mattress. Approaching her comrades, Kaylin held up her charade. She wasn't about to take any chances. "Rangers," she greeted them with the proper tone of respect. "While it is not mine to give, the blanket has been entrusted to me for the night and thus is mine to lend out if I will it so. It is cold out still, and I would not see our protectors badly equipped if I can help it." She held out the carefully folded blanket to Duinion, who was closest. "Will you accept this small gesture on my behalf?"

The Pelennor and Beyond

Growing thoughtful, Kaylin mused whether actually taking Erynneth into Ithilien would be one step too far. "The forest is a different place during the day than it is at night," she replied slowly. "Though I would say the same of the city, or the fields." Finishing her meal, the redhead bit her lip; a bit torn. "About the orcs... I would say the odds are very slim of encountering any. Especially close to Osgiliath. But it is not impossible."

"I could show you some of its beauty, though I am not the best person for it." She thought of Thûllir for a moment, since he would be an excellent individual to show Eryn the beauty of his homeland, but then Kaylin pushed the thoughts away. He would return when he had fulfilled his orders, and when he himself was satisfied with the extent of his patrol. Still not a fan of him going by himself, Kaylin preferred not to linger on the subject. "However, Eryn..." She hesitated for a moment, but then straightened her shoulders and gave Erynneth a grave look. "If we go out there - I need your word that you will listen to me. On the off chance something should go amiss, I need to know I can trust you to do as I say. If you're not willing to do that, then we won't leave sight of the crossing on the other side of the river in Osgiliath."
It was perhaps not the best way to start a friendship. But if Kaylin took Erynneth into Ithilien, she would no longer simply be a friend. She would be responsible for the girl's safety. And if for some reason she doubted she could guarantee that safety, she would forgo their little adventure. Instantly. And she wanted Eryn to know she was very serious about that.

"Ah, he was just concerned for his own hide, asked whether we are setting a watch," Pele responded to Duinion's question and got back to finishing her meal rather quickly before the stew cooled off and became less delicious. His reaction to what information she had given about their merchant made Pele's eyebrow arch up in curiosity. "Well... he hasn't cared to ask for my name or anything, and I have not introduced myself to him, nor have I told him your name. Perhaps not how I usually act, but... I was too angry at first for proper introductions; and it seems that he does not care either way. So probably no worries." She shrugged lightly, gave him a small grin, and then soaked up the last bits of stew with the remaining chunk of bread and popped it into her mouth. Pele thought that perhaps she'd ask him to tell the particular shop experience in more detail, if he was willing.

Having returned the empty bowl with heartfelt words of thanks, Pele returned to their chosen spot for spending the night and upon sight of Kaylin, approached her. "May I?" she reached for the blanket and all but snatched it out of Duinion's hands. "We will definitely appreciate the gesture! And it will mean that we will be more rested and ready to perform our duties," she said, smiling and trying not to burst into a laugh at playing particular roles.

Offering a small bow to Kaylin in a rather demonstrative fashion, Pele prepared her bed space, set next to it her weapons and boots, and then proceeded to roll up into the double protection of the warm and soft blanket and her cloak. "Good night!" she called out to Duinion and Kaylin, peeking out from the comfortable cocoon she had created for herself.

An Unexpected Delay
Ranger Trainee Romeran
At the Gates of Minas Tirith
@Pele Alarion
(Open to All)

Daisy snorted and the hot breath in the chill morning created steam from the horse's nose as she did so. Romeran patted the horse on the side of her neck as they approached the gate. "We'll be outside soon enough" he said, still patting the horse gently as they approached the gate. Equipped in his grey-green ranger's cloak he was immediately recognizable to the guards of the front gate. But he was traveling out of the city rather than in, so it would not have been much trouble for him to get them to open the gates regardless. One of the guards hollered up to the guards above the portcullis to open the gates and with a churning sound as the wheels were pivoted the gates began to open. Romeran nodded and thanked the guards as he and daisy slowly approached.

Shortly after crossing the threshold of the gate, Romeran saw ahead a cloaked figure on a black horse practically galloping towards him at an alarming pace. Luckily for Romeran, Daisy did not seem particularly startled by the situation and even as the mounted figure suddenly arrived and began to circle them, Daisy simply stood there calmly and snorted hot air from her nostrils again. It wasn't until the captain spoke that Romeran noticed who it was. Romeran had been impressed by the display of horsemanship as Captain Pele had navigated her horse from nearly a dead gallop into a slow trot, circling Romeran.

"Good morning Captain" he said with a smile and a quick salute, he wasn't strictly on duty at present but Romeran had always preferred to err towards more formal than less when addressing his superiors. The captain had been returning to the city, she must have been up early for training, he decided as she seemed to have her sword with her. He wondered what sort of training the captain had been up to at such an early hour, perhaps he would ask later.

"Taking Daisy here" he patted daisy on the side of the neck and she tapped her feet approvingly "for a patrol around the southern Rammas. I could use more time in the saddle and I'd like to familiarize myself to the Pelennor, especially if I expect to go on any real patrol duties" he explained, hoping that the captain would disapprove

"You're welcome to join me, if you'd like" he offered quickly. Romeran hadn't had any particular plans in mind and thought that someone familiar with the area might even point out some useful landmarks as they went.

Tirdinen Duinion
(Also felt like a response was needed)

Relieved that so far, the merchant hadn't learned of Duinion's identity or presence there, he nodded thoughtfully in reply to Pele, and grew thoughtful as he finished his stew. Looking up in surprise as the "lady", aka Ranger Kayin, approached and offered them a blanket. More specifically, she was holding it out to him. His mouth being currently full of stew, he hesitated, unsure exactly how to react here, and also wondered if she was being a little risky in making contact with them so openly, but she did seem to be keeping in character.

He reached out to accept the blanket, and turned to pass it to Pele, only to find her already reaching to grab it. Seeing as he was taking the first watch, she would be needing the blanket before he would. Swallowing what food was in his mouth, he turned back to the dark-haired woman he didn't know, and gave a polite nod. "Indeed, your 'small gesture' is appreciated, ma'am." He answered quietly, agreeing with Pele's statement. "Thank you for the blanket."

After a brief hesitation, he lowered his voice a bit and added, "Beware of him." He had a feeling she was safe as long as he believed her to be who she claimed to be, but if he found out the truth, who knows? He glanced over at Pele. "You were right not to trust him. If he is the same as when I last encountered him, we'd all better be on our guard. He's probably far worse than he was then, in fact, for it was many years ago, and he clearly has far more power and influence now than he did back then." He returned to his normal tone before continuing, "I'm taking the first watch, so if you should need anything, ma'am, feel free to seek me out." He nodded in a 'farewell' fashion to Kaylin. "Good night, Captain." He added to Pele, then set out to pick a spot to station himself where he could best watch over the camp.

Erynneth

Eryn nodded thoughtfully as Kaylin replied. "That makes sense. I never actually saw an orc for real, but Daddy's told me about them, and they sound terrible. I'm glad there's not that many of them around anymore." She wondered what she would do, if they did run into any of them. She imagined herself whipping out her bow and shooting it with arrows, but in truth, she couldn't really be sure that would even be very effective, as her arrowheads were really just the tips off of deer antlers, making a smooth, pointed tip that came out of the target easily without getting caught on the stuffing. Her father's arrows had true arrowheads, with sharp edges and barbed sides, so that they did real damage. Too bad she didn't think to grab a few extra of those, but then... his arrows were also longer than hers, due to their different arm spans.

Looking up at Kaylin as the ranger suddenly got very serious and 'adultish', Eryn listened carefully to what she said, and nodded. "Yes, of course." She answered sincerely. "I promise." She'd been a ranger's daughter long enough to understand there was always a risk to going out there in the forest, and while her father would sugarcoat the tales about his missions when she was little, he'd eventually stopped doing that after she took off to find him in the forest, alone. She figured he'd decided that she needed to understand the dangers better, or something like that.

"I'll follow your instructions exactly, I promise." She told Kaylin, pushing those memories to the back of her mind. "I know it could be dangerous, but I'm still so excited to be going!" She couldn't help a grin. "I can't wait to get there. How much further, 'til we arrive, Kaylin?" She couldn't help being eager to set out again, and get there sooner, so she could see Ithilien and Osgiliath that much sooner.

Kaylin
Osgiliath

She'd been content with Erynneth's acceptance of her terms, and they had made decent time. Their arrival in Osgiliath wasn't late, although the skies had colored dark already. Winter was still holding onto Gondor, after all. Luckily, their steady pace had kept them warm enough, and Kaylin had brought, among other things, a woollen scarf and decent gloves to keep warm. She had been glad Erynneth had thought of the same.

By memory, the redhead lead Erynneth through the still mostly ruined city. She had been here so many times over the past 7 or 8 years, she needn't even think about routes anymore. Besides, ruined or not, it was a city. And that was her kind of terrain. They went slower here, because Kaylin wanted Erynneth to take it all in. "The west bank was ours most of the time, as you probably know. The army had a garrison stationed here, and as a soldier I came out here a good number of times, though I was never a part of the more permanent garrison." Despite that, Kaylin tended to make friends easily, and more often than not left... an impression. Whether it was always a good one, she dared not assume. She was confident, however, that there would be at least one of two people she knew among the sentries.
"Since the war was won and the King disbanded the military... the garrison itself has obviously left. However, there is still a dedicated group that watches Osgiliath as the city awaits to be rebuilt. In the form of a militia of sorts." Basically, a small number of the soldiers of the garrison had stayed, and they still received some funding and supplies from Minas Tirith, since there was no local ruler here yet. In her opinion, Elessar had been wrong to disband the army as he had, but Kaylin did take some care not to comment on that openly - or at least too frequently. Thûllir, however, was very well aware of her thoughts on the matter.

Reaching the main crossing, of which the bridge was still broken, she found what she was looking for. A sentry called out to them before Kaylin even had a chance to. "Approach!" A female voice rang out into the darkness, signalling they had been spotted.
Kaylin slowed, gesturing for Erynneth to do the same. "Friendly!" she called back. She smiled at Erynneth. "Let's see just how hospitable they are these days, hmm?"
"Identify yourself, then!"
"Hyandaner Kaylin Maethyr, seeking a place to sleep and the chance to cross sometime tomorrow," she called back.

A moment of silence. A different voice called back, a man's. "K! Come on up."

Kaylin looked pleased. "Score," she grinned at Erynneth, recognising the voice. "Let's go!"

When they drew up to the sentry post, Kaylin gave a smile to the man awaiting them. "Long time, no see, Sarge," she said rather casually. She'd met the man during a training assignment with Thûllir, when a patrol under his leadership had been... drawn into their little competition. In the years to come, she had made sure to buy Baerden enough drinks and share enough loughs with him in the presence of other soldiers who called her 'K', for the initial to stick.
"I'm not a sergeant anymore, Master at Arms," he replied, with a tilt to his lips. No, he wouldn't be, she supposed, not after disbanding the army. And since they had no local lord here to rank them... She assumed leadership was more of an unstated thing. Understood, rather than underlined.

"If you're gonna use a rank I can no longer lay claim to, I'd rather you used Master Sword," Kaylin said, waving her hand. Even though the one he had used was ranked higher, she'd never quite lost her affinity for the other one. "Sergeant or not, it's good to see you! I didn't know you were one of the people to take up residence here."
He shrugged. "It's where my family was from, before. It felt natural to return. Even if a bit.. early." His eyes fell on the closest ruins, and then he shrugged. "We've managed to restore a few of the buildings with the funding and people sent by the King, however. If you two are looking for a place to sleep, as you said, we can provide it."
Her face lit up with gratitude. "Excellent! Thank you, Baerden!"
He watched her for a moment, then looked to Erynneth. "We know you are good to cross, but..."
Kaylin cut him off. "She's with me. Training." Close enough to the truth... in a way.
Thoughtfully, he nodded. "Greetings," he offered Erynneth. "My name is Baerden, if you did not yet catch it."

He showed them to a building that had been well renovated, and where it seemed he had taken up residence. One of the rooms on the first floor was theirs, he told them, if they wanted it. "There are two wooden bed frames, but no mattresses of yet. But it will be better for your rolls than the cold stone of the floor, or of the city. I think I do have a few more blankets I could give you, for just a bit of extra padding between your rolls and the wood, if you like."

~ An Unexpected Delay ~
Captain Pele Alarion
At the City Gates

@Romeran

A light-hearted smile played on Pele's face when she observed that Daisy did not mind their swift approach much and was unimpressed by Temper's attempts to show off his best qualities to her as he carried himself with much poise and pride, and yet it seemed to her that perhaps Romeran had been slightly less taken aback - though she might be wrong in her observations. Eventually she stopped her horse and returned the Trainee's salute; even though the gesture was not really necessary in the circumstances, she saw fit to honour it.

"Ah, an unofficial patrol of sorts then," Pele concluded after hearing Romeran's explanations and leaned forwards slightly to pat her horse's neck in an effort to calm his impatience down a bit when he kept shifting restlessly and wanting to move off. "Not a bad idea. And I am sure that Daisy appreciates some care and attention too."

At the offer to join in on the exploration, the Captain looked at the Gate thoughtfully. While she had her plans formed for much of the day, there was no urgent business that could not be slightly delayed. Mentally she reorganised her list of tasks to see if she could fit in this outing. "Well... technically I could join you. For a bit. If it doesn't take all day," she said, looking back at Romeran. "How far have you planned to go? Or... how long?" she rephrased the question, remembering that the Ranger-in-making was not very familiar with a detailed layout of the surroundings and accurate distances and time it would take to get to places. "I wouldn't want the whole troop of Rangers come looking for me should I not return within a reasonable time."

Erynneth

Before long, they were moving onward, and soon arriving in Osgiliath. It looked so different from anything she remembered seeing as a child... in fact she didn't recall seeing a city or ruins or anything, then. But then, it had been very dark then, and she was pretty sure it was foggy or something that day, and very spooky. She pushed aside those memories and focused on the present. "The west bank," She murmured, repeating after Kaylin, and looked in that direction. She had no idea how she could have gotten through here, before without being stopped. Probably because of the fog that night?

A voice called out suddenly, ordering them to approach, and startled Eryn slightly. She glanced at Kaylin, and followed close behind her friend. She smiled back, glad that Kaylin knew what to say and do here, and kept quiet as Kaylin called out a reply to the person. "I guess they're not going to turn us away then?" She grinned as Kaylin said 'let's go.' She stuck close to her, wondering what to expect, and then kept quiet while the ranger spoke to the..sargeant? She tried to follow along with everything that was said, unsure what exact sort of titles these people had. And then, at last, the attention fell onto her, and she smiled a little shyly. "Hello." She greeted the man. Kaylin was pretty quick with an excuse for her being here, and she refrained from shooting a grin her way. "I'm Erynneth, it's nice to meet you, sir."

And then, they were being led to surprisingly nice rooms they could stay in. Eryn certainly hadn't expected this! She had been prepared to sleep on the ground, maybe in a tent or something. This was great. She smiled at Baerden. "Thank you, we greatly appreciate your hospitality." She was, more than anything, eager to get out and see the forest, but it was also nice to have a comfortable place to sleep for the night, and she assumed these people would have food stores as well, so the girls wouldn't have to use up their supplies just yet. So far, her adventure into Ithilien was turning out great!

The night was good: Baerden provided them with some more (simple) food and they even got to sleep indoors, safely, and there was even an hearth to keep them warm. It had been more than Kaylin had thought they would have, but she was still glad she had prepared Erynneth for worse conditions. The unexpected luxury was thus a nice surprise, and it was always more pleasant for things to turn out better instead of worse.

The next morning, they were invited to have breakfast with the other sentinels, and Erynneth got a taste of military camaraderie. These men and women were former soldiers and not rangers, however, and even though Erynneth was aspiring to be the latter rather than the former, Kaylin was entirely in her element. She laughed heartily at the others' jokes - which were less crude than usual perhaps, given Erynneth's obvious young age - and was a match for the most outspoken ones present. This was no lot to sit with if you wanted to wake up slowly and quietly, but that was rarely Kaylin's disposition anyhow. She involved Erynneth as much as she could, looking and smiling at the girl in between jesting with the others, encouraging Eryn to join in if she felt comfortable, although it was not a must.

After breakfast, the two gathered their things. "Are you ready?" Kaylin asked Erynneth more quietly as they made their way to the crossing. "They will let us cross to the east bank, and then we can make our way into Ithilien." She'd decided not to go further than a specific crossroads she had in mind, however. The war might be over, but that did not mean there was no evil left in the world, and the forest was much too large to ensure it was free of those who might mean harm to others. As they stepped into the small boat that would take them across the river, Kaylin's blue-grey eyes sparkled at her friend. "Think Duinion will ground you after hearing about this?"

Kaylin's question caused Eryn to hesitate for a moment, and she raised an eyebrow. "When he hears about it?" She climbed into the boat. "He'd better not be hearing about it!" She laughed. "I thought we agreed we weren't going to tell him anything about this trip?" She reminded the ranger, feeling a little uncertain despite her light laugh. What if Kaylin had changed her mind about that? She was sure that he would be very upset.. if he found out. But with any luck, they'd get back long before he did, and he'd never hear about it and all would be well.

The night had been quite comfortable, much more so than she would have expected when she set out with Kaylin yesterday. And breakfast was delicious. The company had been nice enough to chat with, and she had sort of almost learned all their names, but she wasn't sure she'd remember everyone by the time they returned at the end of the day, and there were some she wasn't sure if she had the names matched with the right face. She was more eager to get out into the forest, however, and the thought of taking a boat actually quite surprised her, as she hadn't expected that.

"How far are we going, by the way?" She wondered a moment later, adjusting her bow so that it lay down lower in the bottom of the boat, yet still within reach. She wasn't sure whether she would need it, but it was better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Something her dad often said, and she could see the wisdom of it. Her knife(or rather, her father's knife) was stowed carefully in the sheathe at her belt, and she took a moment to fidget with getting the chain shirt to lie more comfortably under the jerkin, as she was still getting used to the feel of wearing such things. "I can't wait to see the forest." She added with a grin, looking around eagerly.

"Well, if all goes as planned, he will not hear about it from me, Erynneth," Kaylin tried to reassure her new friend. She did not want to think about the option where something would go wrong. If anything, the odds were in their favor, now the war was over. They would have to run into some proper bad luck for things to go south. Right? Yet, if any harm were to befall Eryn, Kaylin knew she would inform Duinion right away. And she knew he would fault her - and he would be right to do so.

Seeing Eryn fumbling with the jerkin and the mail, made Kaylin grin. She had not worn any mail herself since joining the Rangers, and although Thûllir had mentioned she may want to reconsider, it had worked out great during the Poros mission. Though it was true that she now had to take more care to evade blows, she was also much quicker and more agile - and so far, she liked the trade-off. She still wore her greaves and bracers, because she felt too unlike herself if she did not, but otherwise she was clad in wool and leather. It made her more of a silent presence as well (as long as she didn't talk, of course). That could be convenient, although this time it wouldn't be worth much since Erynneth was along and she was wearing mail. At Eryn's question about how far they were going, her expression grew thoughtful. She had a place in mind, but... "Has Duinion taught you anything about moving in the woods?" she inquired. She'd gained some knowledge years ago, but in truth most of what she knew had been taught to her rather recently, during her travels with Thûllir. They'd had plenty of time for it, and he had been happy to teach.

They wouldn't be on the boat for long. It would simply serve as a way to cross the Anduin and keep the larger raft available should the sentinels have need for it.
"I'm assuming that the east bank will still be mostly as it was before," Kaylin mused. The west bank would probably gain more attention first, followed by the bridges and only then the other half of the city.
When they set foot back ashore, it turned out she was right. "Ruins to your left," Kaylin said quietly. "Ruins to your right." She glanced at her friend. "What do you think? Citadel of the Stars?"

Erynneth

Relaxing slightly at Kaylin's reply, Eryn nodded and pushed aside the worry. So long as no one else told her dad, everything ought to be fine. But suddenly, she wondered... did her dad know Baerden and those other people there? Would he talk to them, next time he came out this way? Would they mention her? She hadn't mentioned anything to them about who her father was, but... what if it somehow came up? She hadn't told them NOT to tell anyone about her being there...

Well, whatever happened, it wouldn't do any good worrying about it, she figured. Shaking her head, she frowned a little in answer to the question. "No, he never wants to teach me anything. Only how to shoot, so I can protect myself if I have to, I guess." She sighed. "But I have a couple of friends who're rangers, you included." She grinned. "I'm trying to learn a lot of stuff anyway, without telling him. Like now.. and I'm hoping to get to learn about traps and things from daddy's friend, and then I was hoping maybe Nal might be able to teach me something or other, he's one of my other friends." She would learn all the stuff, one way or another, it might just take a little longer than she wanted.

Climbing out of the boat, she looked around, taking it all in. Ruins left and right, just as Kaylin said. But she still had no memory of this place... especially not a river. "It's sad, isn't it?" She said softly, trying to imagine what the place must have looked like back before it was in ruins. "Do you think they'll ever restore it? Like, back to how it was before? It must've been beautiful." She ran a hand over a broken, half-fallen pillar that probably held up a balcony or something, trying to remember how long ago it was that all this was destroyed.

"Yes," she replied quietly. "Very sad." Knowing it apparently used to be such a beautiful place, the former capital of the country they loved so much... Kaylin preferred not to think on it too thoroughly. She was not a fan of depressing thoughts, nor did she fancy brooding.

At Eryn's next question, she drew to a halt and faced the girl. Seeing her friend touching a broken pillar, Kaylin was suddenly struck by an altogether different mood. A pretty smile mastered her expression. "I don't think they will. I know they will." While she did not agree with all King Elessar did, she believed he would deliver when it came to the restoration of their kingdom. She had seen the restoration and the changes he had already made to Minas Tirith these past few years, and highly approved of them. "Osgiliath will be beautiful once again, in time." Kaylin stepped closer to Erynneth and put a hand on her shoulder. "I wager that, by your next visit, it will look different already. And once again the time after that. And one day we will travel here and it will be joyful instead of sad."

Stepping away, slinging her pack over her shoulder a bit better than before, Kaylin glanced back over her shoulder. "You coming? We still have a ways to go. I didn't miss that you were most excited about seeing the forest. I imagine you want to make the most of our time."

Trastion Leithor
New recruit

Joining An Unexpected Delay

The morning was cool and crisp, and promised to be cold but beautiful. It was a perfect time to explore his new surroundings, and having a bit of free time, Trastion was absolutely planning to take full advantage of this time, before his training began. He wasn't sure what to expect, and he also wasn't sure whether he'd have much free time after training began, so now there was no time to waste. Therefore, he'd set out before dawn to make the most of the day, while it lasted.

Having heard that there were horses that the rangers could use, Trastion had asked about borrowing one. He thought it might be a good idea to brush up a bit on his riding skills before there was anyone around to observe, just in case. It had been a couple of years since he left his horse behind. He missed Rhovan a lot, but knew that his sister would ensure that his horse was well cared for, so that was a comfort, at least. Trastion was pleased to have even found a horse in the ranger's stables that reminded him a little of Rhovan, and took him out for a bit of exercise, hoping to get a bit of practice in early before there were too many folks out and about.

It didn't take long before he'd gotten a little lost in the city, however, and ended up wandering down a few side streets until they came to a park with a good view over the walls of the Pelennor far below. "Think we ought to ask directions?" He asked Lightning, smiling at the little streak down his nose, that sort of resembled a bolt of lightning. He wasn't sure if the horse understood his question or was simply reacting to a fly or something, but he shook his head about that time, and Trastion grinned. "Alright, we'll watch the sunrise, then try to find out way, how's that? Maybe we'll get lucky, and find the right way." He glanced at Lightning and smiled, wondering what anyone would say if they saw him talking to a horse. Trastion hoped to get better familiar with the whole area, but that wouldn't happen in just a few hours. Still, he was reluctant to ask anyone for directions. Besides, this counted as exploring. He and the horse, named Lightning, wandered for a while before stopping near the walls. The sun was rising, and Trastion couldn't believe how beautiful it was.

Turning toward the east, Trastion watched the sky turn colors as the sun slowly climbed within sight. His and Lightning's breath puffed out in faint little clouds in the chill morning air. After watching the sunrise, he led Lightning back toward the streets. "Let's see if we can find the way down to the main gate, huh?" He laughed a little. Eventually, he found the way down to the next level, and then the next few after that weren't so difficult, and before long, they were finally passing out through the gate. Trastion breathed out a sigh of relief once he got through, though he was slightly disappointed as he had intended to be out riding before dawn.

Just past the gate, he stopped as he observed Captain Alarion and an unknown, but very largely-built man, both on horseback, and talking to one another. Trastion hesitated, a bit caught off guard by that, and wondered whether he ought to approach or not. But, just in case either of them had spotted him, he offered a friendly wave and a smile. He didn't intend to intrude on whatever conversation they were in, so he decided to lead Lightning onward and only mount the horse once he'd gotten a little further from everyone else, just in case his skills were a bit rusty.
