@Aodh Hammerhelm Apologies, but I think a group of us will shortly be converging on the Fields and Forests thread to play out a storyline that has been building in multiple other threads throughout the festival.

I appreciate it’s not what the thread is for and the content really fits in Life in the Mark, however the very same role players are already in that thread role-playing out multiple other things from the in-world night before and the stories are glorious. I don’t want to smother or extinguish any ongoing roleplay that’s still unfolding in LITM, so F&F seemed the best alternative bet.

Also because the timeline went all wibbly-wobbly and we have the same PCs in five different threads simultaneously, having a new thread no-one has yet posted in helps us pull it together.

We’ll keep our location a bit vague if that helps?

@Lailyn I saw you have exited Mx Meduseld competition; fancy running into Shadowfox somewhere? I’d prefer to role-play more of a conclusion to my character than them just running away but I hadn’t figured out how yet. Then maybe we can both re-enter together for the final results or something? Have you seen any amazing role-play and want to applaud the genius behind it and point at it for everyone to see and say 'wow, have you seen that? Look at that, isn't it great?

Have you recently been impressed with someone's amazing knowledge of lore and the speed in which they respond to queries and are wondering if somehow they are cheating and actually their like a walking encyclopedia like Data off Start Trek, but Tolkien-based?

Are you quietly a little intimated by someone's cunning riddle skills but you want to let them know its ok, you still love them, you're struggling to keep up but are actually really glad they have found someone to exhibit this frighteningly impressive ability!

Is there someone in particular that has made you feel super welcome and listened to you, coached you when you needed a bit of a cinfidence boost, or who made you feel validated and uplifted on the plaza and now you just want to give them a big, massive, digital hug?

@Lailyn I think its probably more accurate to say I’m not a fan of having two NPCs in the same room both trying to interact with the same people; sometimes you can just end up talking to yourself or being self-gratifying. But Lailyn and Shadow catching up just outside the tent while oblivious to what’s happening inside could work. Are you playing in LITM at the moment?

A general proposal for kingdom-wide RP; let me know your thoughts

So I’ve been reflecting on the really fun roleplay that has been happening between numerous kingdoms during the festival, and especially between Rohir and minion characters, our Mx Meduseld champion being a minion, and our historic tendency for players to jump between these two particular kingdoms. Especially recently in the festival games, a lot of once loyal Rohir are showing sympathies towards Mordor in an attempt to engage minion players in a positive, open minded way.

At the same time, I’ve also been thinking about loads of people in Rohan (myself included) have covered their own OOC poor recollection of events from years ago by having their character suffer with amnesia recently; so many people took this approach that it’s become an almost hilarious trend in Rohir.

Do I got to thinking; What if these things are connected? What if Sauron/an evil wizzy has used dark magics to curse the nation in an attempt to bring it under Mordor’s sway?

Effectively this would give us an IC reason for not only having poor recollection of old plaza events, but also an IC reason why we might be roleplaying with the minions a lot more, and seeing PCs switch kingdoms or sitting on the fence.

I know a some people who would have liked to get involved in the recent mischief as their main character but felt constrained by their rank or expectation to maintain a certain loyal decorum to Rohan that can limit engagement with nation’s like Mordor. Others may have wanted to play an evil streak to their characters but not know how; and evil characters can often feel similarly limited when they go to a good nation like Rohan and people judge them before they have actually done anything wrong.

This idea would allow people from both kingdoms to engage in a bit of minion madness in either kingdom without breaking the canon of their characters.

It gives Minions another kingdom they can roleplay in, but also allows each individual player to choose which of their characters (if any) are effected by the curse. The curse would effect different people in different ways; some people through experience or nature are more naturally inclined to be corrupted (the Boromir/Faramir thing). Others are unaffected. But until the curse is lifted (which will probably require the help of one of our beloved Istari friends) people keep being sympathetic to minions or allying themselves to Mordor despite themselves.

For example for @Taethowen this is maybe exacerbating her traumatic memory loss, for @Thalionwen it’s maybe making them shift loyalties toward Mordor. For Allacan, it is bringing her Mordorian conditioning to the surface. It’s subtle though, so it looks like each individual is just being a little dubious in their actions or a bit double crossing, but it’s only when taken on the whole that one starts to see the pattern.

We may end up with a tyranny arc, if people like First Marshal @Shivased end up heavily under the influence of Mordor, with a chance to roleplay experiences similar to what it must have been like living under the Grima-ingested-Theoden (no Shiva, you don’t have to develop cataracts and grow a long, grey beard, lol)

Also, other people could be free from influence. For example @Gwai who spent the last 10 years travelling Middle Earth is as yet unaffected. This could lead to some interesting roleplay where people start figuring it out among themselves, and have to fight the temptation of the curse so that they can work at lifting it. But with no way of determining who else is effected potential agents of Mordor everywhere, it difficult for these people to act on their insights without making themselves a potential target for people more influenced by the curse.

And this can be a consensual roleplay; if you don’t want to engage you don’t have too; obviously your PC is stronger than the curse. You can be the defiant and loyal Eowyn who never falls to darkness and keeps fighting the good fight, undoing the damage wrought by secret agents and maintaining the principles of Rohan.

I for one really like @Allafyrefleorhtlig's ideas to combine all of this together. Especially as, for the most part, it shouldn't affect personal RP as much, but rather create a cohesive setting for the whole kingdom.

I really like @Allafyrefleorhtlig's idea. We do seem to have an over-arching theme of memory loss for a lot of people, and this gives us a fun way to explore why everyone has suddenly forgotten the last few years.

I think this is a really great idea, @Allafyrefleorhtlig. It won't permanently change anyone's character, but will let whoever wants to explore in a way that may not have been possible before.

I can’t really form a complete and articulate version to f my thoughts with a phone at the moment, but from the minion that may have started all of this, I thoroughly endorse this. It can help develop characters that are old and have been milling about for 10-15 years (like my own) and develop brand spanking new ones that were created just for the minion madness. This sounds like a really fun way for the players to get to know each OOC too and build a better camaraderie.

Okay, let me be very clear here. I believe this NuPlaza should be a place that welcomes all sorts of people across broad a spectrum. That extends to all members of all kingdoms being allowed to come in and play and RP and have a good time. We should not have members of one kingdom telling members of another kingdom that they have no place in their kingdom. That sort of thing is wrong on a dozen different fronts. No kingdom has a right to tell another kingdom they can't play with them and anyone who does is automatically out. We shouldn't be standing for that kind of bigotry in this NuPlaza. We should be welcoming, open, and have fun.

I'm a minion, everyone knows this about me by now. Does that mean I'm a dastardly, evil, conniving, mustache twirling villain? Absolutely not. That's the most inane, boring sack of bull I've ever heard. I can be evil if I want, but so can anyone on this Plaza. I have a ring in my icon, that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to post and play and RP with members of the horsey cult or the white city or the elves. Any of those members have just as much capacity for evil and good as I do. My main character, Frost, is a very, very complicated character who can't be described as simply evil or simply good. He's emotional complex and the fact that he's often sneaky shouldn't take away from his many positive qualities. I have some characters in my repertoire that are pretty mean and nasty, but I have some that are beautiful wonderful people that just want to be loved and love the world back. We are more than the sum of our characters and which kingdom we are a part of should not reflect negatively on us.

I don't want my opinion to weigh too heavily, as I'm not seriously involved in RP right now and don't plan to be. That said, I think that while this is a decent idea for a campaign (which could be played for humor or drama or both), it's not a good idea for it to be imposed on the kingdoms generally. (Perhaps especially "imposed" on Rohan, as the concept suits apparent Plaza-characterization of Mordor a bit better to begin with.) This is especially the case because as proposed there's no timeline - I think even the most die-hand proponent of this proposed RP would admit it would be absurd to maintain this as the overall "character" of the Rohan kingdom perpetually.

I don't think it's possible to impose a non-obvious kingdom-wide characterization like this and honestly maintain it as "consensual roleplay". The proposed evasion of the concept by "never falling to darkness" or "undoing the damage wrought by secret agents" isn't actually consensual if people don't want to deal with the darkness and secret agents in the first place. While it's possible to ignore almost any ongoing shenanigans in almost any thread and play the straight man, it becomes harder and harder to do so the more widespread and the more authorized the shenanigans are.

I see the almost inevitable result of a kingdom-wide change like this being the creation of cliques - at a minimum two, the die-hards trying to ignore it, and the all-ins carried away with the concept. Again, this is especially true because as currently proposed there's no timeline: there's not yet a point where the eye-rollers know it will at least be over.

I'll say again I think it's a fine idea for a campaign, and could even be a good theme for something clearly time-defined like "two weeks after Halloween". But as proposed it's far too broad to be beneficial.

While I am not talking about unsolicited raids or doing stuff to annoy people of the kingdom, everyone is allowed to post everywhere as long as they abide by the threadrunners rules. @Elvheimdros some very valid points, and to be honest all of this is in the very, very early stages of even being sketched out. My understanding is that if it were to go through, there would be some of us involved who are laying the groundwork for a while RP-wise, with our own character backstories and such as we wanted, with the option of anyone not immediately in the 'know' participating only if they desire to. But for the rest who are here just to play around in Rohan, it would not even be noticeable. There are already private RPs going on all around us in Life in the Mark, etc.

But there would be a planned 'campaign' as it were to wrap up the event. It would not all go on indefinitely.

I didn't intend to suggest that we pressure anyone to role-play anything that they don't want to or have any expectation that they will be involved if they don't want to. I apologise if I wasn't clear enough in that regard. I may have just been a bit to enthusiastic and excited about it when I posted. I guess it was just a general plot-line I was interested in role-playing out and wondered if anyone else was interested. Very much an 'opt in if you are interested, perfectly fine if you are not' sort of thing. And I don't want to detract from other people's role-play and the type of stories and adventures they want to play, hence why I thought I would brainstorm it here first. But you are right, I can certainly understand why the 'eye-rollers' might get tired of a group of people pushing an agenda in various threads that they aren't keen on or part of, so will try and be conscious of that. A campaign may indeed be fun if people are particularly keen, and would certainly keep the concept limited by both time and venue so as to not encroach on other people's fun. I'm certainly not against whatever people what to do with their characters' stories (or backstories), even coordinating them - but phrases like "tyranny arc" and "cohesive setting" had me thinking there was a suggestion for much, much more than just character-based storytelling. I am once again going to be off the plaza (and the associated discord chats) for a day or so, and it looks like (for the next few weeks at least) weekends are likely to be a bad time for me to post as that is when my boyfriend isn't working and we can spend some quality time together.

I also appreciate that this posting schedule may not line up with those of you like Rowena and Nen who are mostly free at weekend but I'm sure you will understand
