FAIRGROUND REFRESHMENT STAND

At the heart of Edoras lies Se Riddermarket, the center of trade within the city. Though troubles have befallen Rohan’s capital over the past years, new life is returning to the streets. The gates of Se Riddermarket have been thrown open, and though some of the shops still show signs of disrepair, most have been scrubbed clean and stocked with enticing goods. Colorful bunting hangs in the shop windows, and stalls have been set up both within the alleys of the market itself, and in the broader streets outside.

Just before the market gate, a large wooden counter has been constructed. “Faire Food, Hot and Fresh” the banner above the counter reads, and behind it, several carefully-watched open air ovens and fires are burning as delicious morsels bake or roast or fry. Two beaming figures stand behind the counter—Cnith, a quiet-mannered man, who manages most of the cooking, and Getale, his outgoing sister, who waits upon the patrons. They answer to Eldrith, who oversees the stand, but is busy amidst the gathering knots of fair-goers. (Cnith and Getale are NPCs available to help you as you order. Please feel free to roleplay them yourself)

Though a hand-lettered sign lists the food and drink available at the stall, Getale is also happy to rattle off what’s on offer for any customer who is unable to read. For the duration of Summer Festival, the refreshment stall will be serving…

BEVERAGES
Heardofur; thick ale with cinnamon and pomegranate
Juice from apples, celery and carrots.
Melcan; Fresh milk mixed the newest honey.
Lígbryneflod; ale with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a spritz of lemon juice.
Citrus Mead
Dorwinion Wine
Blueberry Ale
Honeyed Tea

FOOD
Badger on a stick; succulent badger meat in kebab form. Tastes like sweet, sweet revenge
Deep fried cheese wedges; gooey, stringy, and so bad but so good
Sceap hrycg; a platter of lamb fried with boiled potatoes and vegetables
Fried crebain legs; delicious battered bird meat
Spicy crebain wings; delicious sauce-slathered bird meat
Mystery meat stew in a bread bowl; portable, hot, and an adventure because you’re not sure what you’re getting
Iced fair buns; sweet bread slathered in sticky frosting
Candy apples; the last of winter’s apples coated in glossy honey caramel
Rohirric roasted pig; a hefty slice of pork from a boar Cnith is turning on a spit
Mirigetunge; small honey cakes baked over the fire
Carrots and apples for our equine guests

MARKET & SCAVENGER HUNT

Beyond the refreshment stand and through the gates of Se Riddermarket, numerous shops can be found. A cheerful blonde woman in an unseasonal black dress with a heavy gold bracelet on one wrist greets you at the gate.

“Welcome here!!!” she says brightly. “I’m Thalionwen of the Eastfold. Our market laedenmanger is Shivased, who’s busy at the moment, but I’m overseeing a scavenger hunt through the shops—would you care to try your luck?”

SCAVENGER HUNT RULES

No signups are required for this year’s Summer Festival Scavenger Hunt. You can begin whenever you like. To successfully complete the hunt, you must visit each of the shops on the following list and roleplay asking the shopkeeper for a SECRET ITEM they have in their possession to provide hunters. The winner of the hunt will be either the participant who visits the most shops, or be drawn from among those who visit all the shops if multiple participants complete the hunt.

Should you visit a shop and fail to receive a response from its proprietor within 24 hours, you may then roleplay visiting another shop simultaneously while waiting for the initial shopkeeper to respond to your post.

On July 7th, the scavenger hunt will conclude. Please tally up the number of shops you managed to visit and report to Thalionwen at the Riddermarket gate to inform her of your number and the items you collected. On July 8th, the winner will be announced.
The shops to visit are as follows—please consider visiting them out of order so proprietors are not all swamped at once:

Taethowen, Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

She needed more tea. That was all there was to it, but she'd overslept and run out of time after finishing all the last-minute preparations for the Miss/ter Meduseld competition, plus the last of the commissions due before the Summer Festival, including a gown each for Thalionwen and Lady Bereth.

But after those rush orders--and she still wasn't sure why Thalionwen had ordered a black gown for the Summer Festival--it had quickly become clear that Taethowen needed some help around the shop.

And so, as the Summer Festival about to start, drawing in merchants, artisans, and crafters from all over Middle-earth (she hoped), she found herself in the shop at nearly the crack of dawn, making a sign.

A little while later--and after a few redo's, since Taeth had definitely not had enough sleep or tea--she proudly hung up a sign outside the shop which read:

Seeking semi-experienced seamstresses to apprentice.
Interested parties inquire within.

Then, with a yawn and barely remembering to flip the shop sign from 'closed' to 'open' she wandered back inside, and sat down at the counter. She propped her elbows up on the countertop, then propped her chin on her hands, and tried to stay awake.

But at one point, as she nearly drifted off, she remembered the blasted scavenger hunt. "Bema's horn, I have to hide those things."

Thalionwen, Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

It was an exciting day in the Riddermarket. There were scavenger hunts to be run, new friends to be made, and old friends to torment. Accordingly, when things seemed a little slow, Thali left her post at the market gate and hurried across the square to Awesnis. She cast a quick glance over at her own shop, CweÞ Ciese, but things were quiet yet and it would be alright for a few minutes.

"Taeth! Taethy! Tae!" Thalionwen called as she pushed through the door. "Where are you? It's an exciting day. And look how pretty the gown you made me is! Admittedly it washes me out a bit, but what do you expect with black? The cut's flattering though. Oh, are you hiring an apprentice??? How exciting! Can I apply? I've only got..." Thali counted on her fingers, "five jobs at the moment. Six is a nice round number! And you know I can sew up people, cloth can't be all that different."

Eldrith - "Faire Food, Hot and Fresh Marketstals”

*It was a strange feeling. It had been a festival, Mettare even, that had lured her out of the Freablod mansion years ago. She'd just intended to have a quick visit, still expecting a hand on her shoulder or a voice calling for her arrest at every turn. Yet when the one and only food stand had turned out to be manned by a drunken lout of a proprietor, she had somehow.. taken over the stand for the duration of the festival. And the reactions had been enthusiast. No one had called out her name, no one had tried to take her away. And the few people she'd encountered from Gondor at the festival had not recognized her.

It had been the beginning. It had led to being offered management of the Aeldsel. It had led to getting to know more people, taking up a room above the inn. It had led to.. life. And now.. here she was, with Cnith and Getale running various stands, and Eldrith herself.. overseeing, enjoying and for some reason.. not being afraid anymore. After over a decade, she did not think anyone trying to drag her back would sit well with her friends.
She HAD friends. No, even better!! She had a family! Bereth was back. And Eldrith had taken one more step. She would join the cavalry as soon as the festival was finished. And she was preparing herself to thoroughly enjoy herself, and see to it that everyone was well fed!*

"Taeth! Taethy! Tae!"

Taethowen jerked awake, hands falling down from where they supported her chin, and she nearly fell off her stool. "Bema's horn, what is going on?" she muttered, blinking the sleep-haze from her eyes. Why did her neck hurt?

Then, behind the sound of Thalionwen gushing about her new gown, Taeth began to pick out the sounds of a busy marketplace. Ah, the shop. She'd... opened the shop? Had she been AWAKE? What time was it?

As she pushed the muddiness from her thoughts, she caught Thalionwen's words in bits and pieces. Something about apprenticing even though have five jobs already, and that brought Taethowen to full alert.

"Stop right there," she said, and pointed at the sign next the 'Seeking Apprentices' one. The one that stated

NO FOOD OR DRINK ALLOWED

"Don't you remember what happened when you came for your first gown fitting? You're lucky you're still allowed in the shop as my friend."

Thalionwen started to pout, but Taethowen fumbled under the countertop for a moment then pulled out a small basket of items for the scavenger hunt. "But, can you help me hide these around the shop?"

As she straightened, rubbing the stiffness out of her neck, she scowled out the window. Why was it so bright? "Hey Thali? What time is it anyway?"

Bereth - Entering the Fairgrounds

Smoothing down the last wrinkles from the summery frock she’d been fortunate to purchase from the ones Taeth had offered from her shop, Ber had been happy it was rather simple and plain, her only nod to vanity a necklace of a crescent moon with a tiny silvery bell that tinkled faintly at her movements, which were languid and lazy. She’d hoped to merely blend in, remain in the background, not draw attention. It was actually a relief that her help was not needed. She was dreadfully out of practice with any sort of hospitality. And it was just nice to simply relax and enjoy the heady holiday atmosphere!

She lingered at the counter outside the gate, not particularly hungry yet, although the mingle of delicious scents tickled and tempted her senses. She leaned in towards Getale in order to be easily heard. “The blessings of the day be upon you, ma’am. I should like to have something cold and fruity to drink, if you will. I’ll let you surprise me.” She winked and a settled a small coin on the freshly scrubbed surface, nodding her thanks as she indulged a first sip of Lígbryneflod. “Well chosen. Exactly what I craved!”

She determined to nurse it a goodly amount of time as she strolled off to see which shops were open, glad to have switched from her usual boots to white leather slippers, the closest she’d dare get to being barefoot. One never knew what might be strewn about the grounds or if clumsy feet should trample near!

Zarâm - Entering the Fairgrounds

Zarâm slunk into the Edoras fairgrounds, still wondering why she had wandered away from Mordor yet again. Of course, the procurement of new items for the Plakaut Girdanim was usually the reason for leaving the Black Lands. But this place was indeed very strange and far too happy. She scowled, her sharp, dirty teeth a distinct contrast from the smiles of all the humans that were in the midst of the grounds. But it would not do to think about them. She was here to get goods for her stand and did not care if she obtained them through purchase, this strange thing called a scavenger hunt, or one of her favourite pastimes, murder.

She trampled over to the place where a familiar looking woman (Thali) in a black dress stood, announcing something about the rules to the Scavenger Hunt. "I would like to participate," Zarâm said to the woman, before looking carefully at her. "You work in the pub. Did Írimë finally manage to kick you out of the kitchen?"

Having obtained the necessary information regarding the hunt, Zarâm plodded over to Slitan Bur. A butcher shop always smelled of death and hopefully that would make her feel right at home.

@Elarith (I'm in your shop for the scavenger hunt. Yes, there is an orc in your shop. Just go with it.)

Gwai--the streets, Faire Food

Gwai had been looking forward to the Summer Festival for weeks now, and it was finally here! She had taken extra care with her appearance today, wearing a dark green cotton dress with a flowing skirt and short sleeves, perfect for summertime. Her blonde hair, bleached lighter now from the sun, was pulled up in a knot, and she had broken out her pretty sandals with a small heel, a far cry from her usual riding boots and breeches.

The Faire Food was the first booth she saw, and Gwai immediately headed over. Getale was there, serving food and drinks as always. "Good morning, Getale!" Gwai greeted her cheerfully, with a wave for Cnith. "May I have a Lígbryneflod, please?" she asked, pushing forward a coin. She thought she had seen an orc leaving the stand a minute ago, but decided she must have been seeing things. Instead she turned to another customer at the stand. "Westu hal!" Gwai said with a smile. "It is Bereth, is it not? Are you taking part in the scavenger hunt today?"

Bereth - Entering the Fairgrounds

Upon hearing her name called, Ber intoned, “indeed it is. And if my memory serves me correctly, you are called Gwai.” She broadened her smile, “Actually I’ve never been to one of the summertime Festivals before. But a scavenger hunt sounds like great fun! What must we do to get in on it?”

She followed Gwai’s gaze as she pointed towards Tali, first taking note of the completed dress of odd summer color before a small trill of cold chilling her as she noticed the orc, half ways grasping at the weapon that she wasn’t carry this day, and lowering her voice with a soft hiss. “Gwai, do you allow all life forms to the fair? If you can even call that one such?!” Ah, but if it were truly a threat, she’d had guessed others would have challenged it sooner, and thus relaxed a bit again with a slow shake of her head.

Aethelu - Faire Food

It had been many long years since Aethelu had been in Edoras for a summer festival. In fact, it had been so long, she could barely remember it now. She was sure it was after Dicun had been born, when she had been on the cusp of her teenage years she suspected. It had been loud and busy, she had spent most of it clinging to her family to make sure she didn't get lost. That was about all she could remember. Now it was time to make new memories.

She had arrived early to make sure her shop would be ready and welcome to customers and scavenge hunters alike. Thankfully she noticed that the food and drink stall had already opened for business. There was a delicious smell wafting through the air and her stomach growled in response. Foolishly she hadn't eaten before she'd left home. There was time for breakfast before the crowds started to arrive she was sure.

Approaching the stall, she perused the menu carefully before making eye contact with Getale. "Good morning. May I have a honeyed tea and a portion of Mirigetunge please?"

"Of course, coming right up," she replied while Aethelu rummaged in her coin purse to find the right coins. When Getale returned with her mug and plate, she gratefully took the money. The smell of honey was wonderful, she had developed quite the sweet tooth over the past few years. Hopefully all this sweetness would help keep her energy levels up for the day. The cake were small enough to eat in one bite, but they were still hot from the fire, burning the top of her mouth when she greedily popped the first one in her mouth. The rest were taken it smaller bites, in between sips of tea. More people were starting to arrive now, it was past time to have the shop open. The last of her tea was gulped down as she waved a hasty goodbye to the stall. "Thank you," she called over her shoulder as she hurried into the market. She took a quick detour to the fountain to wash her sticky hands before reaching the door of her shop.

Pen and Ink

When the door opened, the smell of parchment wafted over Aethelu, making her sneeze. She shook her head and hurried into the shop. Behind the counter she reached for her apron, tying it around her waist to cover the bottom of her dress. Next was to get her hair out of the way, twisting it around on the back of her head before securing it with a wooden stick. Now she could take a deep breath and survey the shop. It was clean, the door was open, and the sun was shining. She was ready for the day and could only wait on her first customer or competitor.

Elarith, at Slitan Bur

It was a bright morning, a good day to draw crowds to the Riddermarket for the scavenger hunt and the shops themselves. Elarith had been up early delivering the supplies to Faire Food, ready for the influx of visitors. She'd already had a quick breakfast but would be in need of more sustenance before too long. Her stomach gurgled in agreement.

After setting the kettle on the hob in the workroom so she could at least have a hot drink in the meantime, Elarith hummed as she set up the butcher's wares for the day. She realised it was some tune that Ælfric's children had been singing incessantly for the last week. Ugh. She really needed to find her own lodgings again.

The shop bell went just as she was snatching the kettle up before it boiled over. Ooh! Was it a customer or a scavenger hunter? "One moment please!" she shouted over her shoulder. She poured herself a cup of tea, and carried it through to the shop front.

When Elarith saw what had entered her shop, she dropped the cup in surprise, pottery flying and hot water spilling everywhere as she jumped back. "Oh Fredegar! I mean, sorry! One second!" She grabbed a cloth and began to get the worst of the tea water off the floor, and push the larger pieces of mug to one side. It also gave her a chance to think, and take a covert second look over the counter top. Was that... an orc? It smelled like Orc, unless that badger had gone rancid... Well, silver was silver in this day and age. She took a deep breath, fixed her face to her best Approachable Shopkeeper expression, and straightened up.

"Yes, can I help you?" she asked Zarâm.

Frost, Wandering Toward Pen and Ink

When in Rohan, do as the Rohirrim. That was a saying his father had told him, or some male had told him when he was young, there was no telling if the man was his father or not. Apparently there was a great hubbub about a scavenger hunt going on in the Marketplace and Frost, ever the curious man, was determined to see what it was all about, and to win of course.

It was a beautiful day. There were so many beautiful days in Rohan, especially in comparison to Mordor. The sun was uncommonly bright and the clouds had fled. It was full summer here in the Mark, the heat was intense but not unbearable, especially since he had forgone his typical shadow clinging black garb and decided on an ensemble of appropriate summer colors: greens and reds and vibrant blues. He even tied his jet black hair back into a pony tail instead of letting it hang down off his shoulders. He would be shocked, shocked if anyone recognized him. The Marketplace was abuzz with activity. Children and dogs were racing through the carts and shops and booths. Laughter filled the air and mixed with that delightful smell of berries.

The rules of the scavenger hunt were rather unclear. He just had to go up and ask the booths to give him a secret item? That sounded too easy. Why not have to hunt it down and fight off the other competitors! Maybe he had been living in the chaotic cesspool of Mordor too long. Still, he preferred fighting for his prizes. Maybe he could pick a fight here and relive some old times. Later though, it was too nice out.

The first place he stopped had a sign. It took a moment to read the flowery letters but once he figured them out, they made sense “Pen and Ink.” What sort of secret item was he going to find in there? He entered and did his best to seem nonchalant, looking over the wares, handling a few of the pens, examining the rich colors of the inks. The more he looked, the more he realized he could probably use some pen and ink.

“Excuse me,” he said as he sauntered up the counter, using the overly silky tones of his voice and his best disarming smile. “I think I need one of your fine pens and two inkwells, one of black and one of blue. And,” he leaned in conspiratorially, “perhaps you could provide me with this secret item I’ve been told to ask about.”
"We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes have yet to open... Fear the Old Blood..."

Seleðryðe
Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

It was entirely an accident that Seleðryðe had arrived in Edoras at the time of the Summer Festival; had she her preference, she would have come at a nice quiet time, when there was not so much bustle and commotion. However, events had conspired against her, and she did not have much choice in the matter. The young woman from the Westfold kept her head down and dodged the various passersby, making her way towards the Riddermarket. She had never actually been to the market, but the guards at the entrance had been helpful enough to give her some directions.

She needed some material, enough to make herself a new dress or two (she was wearing the one decent one she owned, and there was a second much more shabby one in her bag), and then she needed a job. And eventually a place to live. She had enough money to get by, at least for a few weeks, but it would not last for all that long. And she did not know if Edoras would be much more expensive than home; she figured it might be.

She finally spotted the fabric shop - it was tucked out of the way, and there was not much fanfare about it, but it said Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica, right enough, so hopefully they would have what she needed. There was a sign in the window that said 'NO FOOD OR DRINK ALLOWED' (which seemed very sensible, though why it was in such large letters she did not know) - and then, next to it, another sign, which suddenly caught her attention: "Seeking semi-experienced seamstresses to apprentice. Interested parties inquire within."

Well then. It might be wise to make a good impression, or at least try to. She smoothed down the front of her dress and glanced over it nervously. There was not too much dirt, and the light blue material was still nice enough ... who was she trying to fool, she undoubtedly looked like she had just walked in from the fields. Which would not have been far off the truth. But she was here to buy fabric, first of all - she was an actual paying customer, or she intended to be, and she figured she should maybe start there. She didn't even know who ran this shop yet.

She pushed the door open quietly. There were two women (Taethowen and Thalionwen) already in the shop, talking, and she stopped in the doorway, hesitating. "Excuse me, I'm sorry, I've just arrived in town but I was told this is the place to buy material; do you have a selection of linen fabrics available for sale?" She wasn't entirely sure who to address, so looked back and forth between the two of them, hoping to work out who was in fact in charge.

Zarâm - at Slitan Bur

So she had surprised the shopkeeper (Elarith), that was something in her favour. The spilled tea had made a delightful mess on the floor and the proprietor herself looked quite terrified. A moment later, when it was clear that the proprietor was trying to figure out how much of a threat she was, she said, "Yes, can I help you?"

Zarâm took a step forward, trying to look as intimidating as possible, which was surprisingly easy for an orc, even one who was a bit smaller than average. "I'm here on this scavenger hunt … thing" she answered. "Give me the secret item that I am required to procure for this quest."

Deep in the back of what resembled a mind, Zarâm wondered why she had agreed to travel to Rohan for this adventure. It was partly to ensure that Thali would be able to escape from the clutches of Rohan as the humans tended to not look upon the residents of Mordor with much favour. But here she was and she would win this scavenger hunt. Trinkets from the human lands were always a hot commodity in the Black Land.

Thalionwen, Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica, The Streets, CweÞ Ciese

As the bell over the door to Taethowen's shop jangled, Thalionwen glanced over at the window, only to see an orc??? disappearing into Slitan Bur??? And Frost??? wandering across the square towards Pen and Ink???

Dimly, she recalled mentioning Summer Festival at On the Rocks. And at the Black Market. And several other places in Mordor, where ill-advised ideas always seemed like strokes of genius to her. And there might have been one or two letters penned very late at night, when her judgment was hazy at best. Truly, she had sown the wind and was reaping the whirlwind.

Maybe her mother had been right, all those years ago. Maybe the structure of the Cavalry would have been good for her.

Oh well. Too late for that now. That was only one of several bridges she'd blithely set fire to over the past year.

"Oh, you want to talk to Taethowen, not me," Thali said to the young woman who'd just entered the shop. For good measure, she forced a laugh, to signal to Taeth that everything was alright, though admittedly it came out sounding slightly maniacal. Then, counting on the distraction of a new customer, Thalionwen slipped out of Awesnis and into the square.

For a moment, she stood undecidedly on the front step. Perhaps she should go after one of the Mordorians skulking about the Riddermarket. After all, laedenmanger Shivased had entrusted her with running the place for the scavenger hunt. But the stress of her double life was beginning to catch up, and she felt something incredibly unfamiliar. Was this...timidity? And...uncertainty? All Thali knew was that she had no desire to confront all these troubles she herself had brought about.

Hurrying across the square, she ducked inside CweÞ Ciese and around the tall counter, where she sat down behind it.

"There," Thalionwen said in a vain attempt at reassuring herself. "This is better. I can just hide. Indefinitely. No one will look for me here, in this open shop. With an unlocked door. That I own."

Taethowen - Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

Taeth was just shoving the basket of secret items into Thaliowen's hand when the door creaked. A young Rohir woman (Seleðryðe) stepped inside, and asked about linen fabrics. Taeth's left eye twitched just slightly--a recent development whenever the subject of linen came up around Thalio--and Thalio managed to speak before she did.

"Oh you want to talk to Taethowen, not me," Thalio said, following up with an awkward screech of laughter that had Taeth twisting her around to gawp at her friend, who was already slipping her way past Seleðryðe and out the door, looking rather shaken and pale. What just happened? Taeth wondered.

She tucked away Thalio's sudden awkwardness to deal with later, though, and turned her attention to the young woman. "Of course, I stock several different kinds of linen here at Awesnis. If you're looking for fine linen, I have a small selection of Eriador linen. I had more, but there was a... mishap, recently, and I haven't been able to restock yet. But if you're looking for something not quite as expensive, I have several yards of Rohan linen, though it's not quite as smooth to the touch. It also has to be dyed yet."

So much for hiding the scavenger hunt items. Taeth quickly tucked that basket back under the counter as she waited on Seleðryðe's response.

Heardwine's mouth had not stopped moving since the the family left their home in Auld Town, but at the sight of the colorfully decorated Riddermarket, filled with flowers, the 5 year old's mouth dropped open and not a sound came. The mother, Amadhrill hælend of Meduseld eored, looked down with a smile at her youngest. It was the first time in years that the Market had been decorated like this, that the Midsummer was celebrated like in her youth, and it was quite the sight for the children of Edoras (and Rohan). The family was dressed in their finest, their golden hairs braided in elaborate ways, Amadhrill, her daughter Ædelwyn, and the 5 year old Heardwine with flowers braided into the hairs. Their clothes well made, yet simple and sturdy enough to pass for finest clothing during summer and winter. The family of five stops just outside and Frithwine, the father bows down to be level with the three children. «Now, you three, when the sun reaches is at it's highest, we will meet for lunch here.»He points at the nearby counter saying «Faire Food, Hot and Fresh». «Ædelwyn?» The father's voice is stern.

«Yes, papa, I will be here then. Now, can I go? I've seen some of my friends...» The impatience of the ten year old was easily heard in her voice. «If you can't find us and something happen, go to the counter here, mum and I will check by it regularly. Okay?» The three children nod, Ædelwyn nearly off already.

«Here are three copper pieces each, to be spent as you wish...» The unexpected treasure halts the children as they take the copper pieces given by their mother. Then the two eldest are off, and Heardwine nearly too, only the firm grip of Amadhrill halts him. «You are too small to run around here alone, there are too many people here, darling!» She lifts him up and gives him a gentle kiss, while he struggles to get down. Laughing she sets him down. «But you can choose, where do you want us to go?»

His first choice is the nearest, the smell of food having drawn the child towards the nearest counter. Ama has not even had the chance to look around herself yet, keeping her eyes on the children having taken much of her attention. She is glad of the day off from cavalry duties, happy that she gets the chance to bring her children to the Mettare festival. The que for counters are growing, and she waves merrily towards those she knows. Having read the sign slowly for Frith and Heard she lifts the child up so he can place his order, only to hand him quickly to Frith when her eyes set on Getale. «Westu Getale hal!», and before she can be stopped she is on the back side of the counter in the bar maid's warm embrace.

«Cnith! Cnith! Come over and look who's come out of her hiding!» The bar maid from old Ældsel Inn laughs merrily and yells for her brother. «Cnith! It's Ama! And, bless me, is that your child?!»

Amadhrill laughs merrily too, returning the warm embrace and promptly embracing Cnith as well, though she is sure he would deny liking it, he still returns it. «Yes, Getale and Cnith, meet my husband Frithwine and my youngest, Heardwine. We have another girl and boy, but they do not have the patience to walk around with their old parents.» She laughs, while her green eyes glitter. As she lets go of Cnith too, she fails to see that Getale hands Heardwine a piece of Mirigetounge. Turning around to have a look, she is not surpriced to see Eldrith.

«Westu hal, freond min! Meet my husband, Frithwine and our Heardwine, Ædelwyn and Glædwine are roaming around I am afraid. So you have returned to your old skills, I see?»

Elarith, at Slitan Bur

The orc came closer, and Elarith’s hand started twitching towards her knives. Nahar’s mane, the stench! She tried turning her head slightly off to the side to cleaner air but it didn’t make much difference. And she had to keep it in view all the time. She scarcely even dared blink in case it came at her.

Zarâm told her it was here on the scavenger hunt. Did this make slightly more sense than every day shopping? Possibly.

“Oh, right. Okay then,” she said, then muttered, “though it would be nice to be asked and not just demanded of.” In a louder voice, she added, “I’ll just grab you one from the basket.”

Sidestepping awkwardly so she could keep her eyes fixed on the orc, the butcher edged along the counter to the basket at the far end. She picked a small, wrapped item out and pushed it as close to Zarâm as she could get. “Right, there you go then. I suppose that’s all you’re here for?”

((@Dimcairien Luiniel Congratulations! Zarâm is now in possession of a lucky badger’s foot))

Starbreeze - Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

It was a while since the wizard Starbreeze had stretched her legs around Rohan, things being a little awkward still over at Orthanc Tower, and so much needing doing to put things back in order. Speaking of order, she was fair disappointed with the rest of her order - they seemed to be few and far between these days, and none of them paid any regard to maintaining appearances, letting beards grow long and unruly, wearing dirty robes. You would never have heard such a thing back in the old days, not when she ran Isengard's very own robe shop, Star Quality robes, where every robe was tailored to the individual. That took her back...

She was so busy ruminating that she barely paid any attention to her surroundings, and after a while found herself in a busy marketplace come fairground with all sorts of folk coming and going. She paused and looked around...hm, maybe it is time for a moment of window shopping, she thought to herself with a small smile, and reached up to the wide-brimmed hat she wore as part of her 'blending in' disguise...maybe a new hat? She continued on her way, peering at various shops and admiring items on display, until she saw a most interesting sign in the window of Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica "Seeking semi-experienced seamstresses to apprentice". Interesting! It was a while since she got the needles out, but just looking at the bolts of fabric through the window made her fingers itch.

Without further hesitation she pushed open the door to the shop, nodding to the women inside (Seleðryðe, Taethowen, Thalionwen) and trying not to get her staff caught in the door way. "West hal, I am here to enquire regarding the advertised position" she said, removing her hat to reveal long curly grey hair, a weathered face and green eyes that glittered with humour...and something else. "My name is Starbreeze, from yonder tower" waving her hat in the general direction of Orthanc "and in the days of the Tower's glory I ran Star Quality robes, a tailored robe making service for the wizards, and guests of the wizards. I'm a little rusty now but lets say that everything I make has a magical quality to it" she finished her introduction with a wink.

Zarâm - The Streets, CweÞ Ciese

Having procured the necessary secret item, Zarâm slunk out of the shop. For some reason the proprietor hadn't been pleased with her manners, but Zarâm thought he had done a wonderful job as she hadn't threatened to kill her, which was her usual means of getting what she needed.

Stepping out into the busy streets of the faire grounds, she wondered what shop she should go into next. There seemed to be quite a commotion in one of the shops - a clothing shop by what the sign said. With a shrug, Zarâm plodded over, likely surprising more than a few faire attendees. It was probably unusual to see an orc in these parts, despite the rather large contingent from Mordor at the moment.

But before she got a chance to enter the shop, Zarâm saw a familiar looking woman slip out and head over to the cheese shop. She followed her over and opened the door, immediately recognizing Thali, who was attempting to duck behind the counter.

Stepping into the shop, Zarâm shouted, "This is a delightfully stinky environment! So this is where you came from before you saw the light and moved to Mordor." Waiting a moment to see if Thali would recognize her, Zarâm continued, "And do you happen to have any of the necessary items for the scavenger hunt? I am certain anything pilfered from Rohan would make a wonderful addition to my shop in the Black Market, including some stinky cheese."

Taethowen - Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

Before Seleðryðe could answer, the bell over the door jingled again. Taeth hoped it was Thalionwen coming back, because she had not liked the expression on her friend's face as she sneaked out of the shop, but she hid her disappointment at it not-being-Thalionwen as a cheery-eyed wizard entered.

When the wizard introduced herself as Starbreeze and asked about the apprentice position, Taeth smiled and laughed, nearly clapping her hands with glee.

"Just a moment!" Taeth answered, then turned back to Seleðryðe, pointing out the bolts of Eriador and Rohan linen a couple rows over. "Please take a look and let me know if you find something suitable for your project."

"Westu Starbreeze Hal!" Taethowen said, turning back to the wizard. "Please, come have a seat. I fear the title of apprentice may be too humble for one with your experience, but I'll confess I desperately need the help!"

Taeth pulled up another stool and patted the seat. "Please, come tell me a bit about yourself, and most importantly--when can you start?"

Bereth - In the Streets, then the Slitan Bur

“Ah well, there does seem to be a rather wide influx of all sorts at the festival,” Ber observed, so she continued her meandering after bidding Gwai a happy day. Finding herself before the Slitan Bur, she frowned a little in thought, and finally entered.

“Good d —“ she tried greeting the shopkeeper, @Elarith before an odor hit her nose and a small gag caused a skip in her words. Trying again, delicately, as she spied the broken pottery worriedly. “I ... trust all is well?”

A quick assurance that it indeed was, Ber cleared her throat and chose to believe her. “I was wondering if good @Eldrith might have a bill with you for her provisions at the foodstand she oversees?” She then chuckled a bit, realizing that might seem an odd question and perhaps even a bit invasive. “I’m asking for the purpose of wishing to pay it off in full for her.” She paused a few heartbeats before adding, “and I do not wish her to know.” Her smile seemed to ask compliance, though she could not add threat to ensure it was granted. “I owe her much, and this is perhaps one of the few ways I can repay her without her refusing to accept.”

She set the small stack of silver coins that would cover the costs before Elarith, murmuring as she turned to exit “My thanks, and I wish you a prosperous ... Oh!” Turning back, “And, erm, might there be a ... a some sort of item for the Scavenger Hunt?”

Starbreeze - Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

The wizard smiled at Taethowen's reaction to her application, and gratefully took the offered seat. "Well, I always say the title doesn't matter, it's the work that's done that matters - you may change your mind when you see my work. I has been rather a few years since I last had time to spend with needle and thread, and I did specialise in robes so I will need help learning all the other garments that customers order here - though I am sure that sewing is sewing regardless of the shape, I've no doubt that some particular stitches and techniques have eluded me over the years! As for me, well, not much to tell my dear. I'm old as the trees, seen a few things in my time, but mostly these days I try and keep things in shape up in the tower. As such, I have a lot more time on my hands than I am used to, so I can start straight away if you need me....what did you say your name is?"

She looked around for a place to set her hat and staff, settling at last with leaning her staff against the counter and placing her hat on top of it; she hoped the staff would stay there securely. It gave her a chance to cast a wizard's eye over the shop. She turned back to Taethowen. "It is a marvelous shop you have here, wonderful selection of fabrics...but do I detect a hint of cheese?"

Taethowen - Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

"Oh, I'm Taethowen Anhyrne!" Taeth said when Starbreeze asked her name. Taeth checked to make sure that her other customer (Seleðryðe) was still doing fine as Starbreeze set aside her staff and hat.

Taeth couldn't hold back her groan when Starbreeze asked, "...do I detect a hint of cheese?"

"Unfortunately, yes. Right after I reopened Awesnis--I was... traveling" yes, that was probably the best way to put it for now "for the last ten years--a dear old, but very scatterbrained friend--lost a wheel of cheese in the Eriador linen." There was absolutely no need to bring up the eggs in the bobbins. They hadn't gone bad, or cracked open, after all. "Unfortunately, an entire bolt was ruined. I thought I'd purged the scent from the shop, though. Perhaps your senses are more refined than mine, or I've simply become used to the scent? If there is something you can do about the smell, being a wizard, I'd be in your debt!

"And as for your skills... would you like to do a trial run? I have a butcher's apron that needs to be finished up, but with the Summer Festival I've barely had the time! Most of the work is done, it just needs the pockets sewed on, and to be hemmed. Once finished, I can inspect your work, and we'll go from there?"

Elarith, recovering shopkeeper, at Slitan Bur

Without another word, the orc Zarâm took the offered item in its hideous talons, turned and slipped out of the shop. Elarith sighed as the door closed behind it, but it immediately reopened. Her breath caught and her hand flexed for her knife again before her brain caught up and told her it was a Rohir woman this time, Bereth, and not the orc or any friends it might have lurking.

"Oh thank Béma," she said. "I'm sorry... @Bereth isn't it?... but I've just had a filthy orc in here. Hence the smell. And I dropped my mug." She shrugged helplessly. The shop must look an absolute state.

Elarith raised an eyebrow when Bereth said she wanted to pay off Eldrith's supplies bill. She raised it even further when she said she didn't want the pub mistress to know. "Well, it's highly unusual, but as long as it gets paid then I'm happy," the butcher replied. She tried not to appear too pleased as the coins were set on the counter - cash flow had been low lately.

"Ah, yes, the scavenger hunt!" Elarith hurried back to the basket, plucked out an object and offered it to Bereth. "Good luck! I'll be cheering you on, can't have a creature from Mordor winning."

Pen and Ink

A customer. Her very first customer! Aethelu couldn't believe it. She had been so concerned that opening up a shop dedicated to writing wouldn't work in Edoras. It had been quiet at first, but the summer festival was a perfect way to attract new customers. Especially with the scavenger hunt. She smiled at the man (Frost) as he entered and began to browse. It seemed he had come dressed for the occasion in his bright garb.

Now here was the conundrum that she hadn't considered before. How was she as the shopkeeper supposed to interact with her customers? Was she meant to greet them as soon as they walked in? Did she need to offer to help them while they inspected her wares? Perhaps it would be better to just let them browse and then they would ask for her help if they needed it. Maybe she should have visited some of the other shops before she opened to see how the other shopkeepers behaved. The man seemed happy enough to examine some pens while she had her little panic. What if he wasn't on the scavenger hunt though and was an actual customer and he thought she ignoring him and she lost her first customer...

Thankfully her rapidly running thoughts were brought to a halt as he approached the counter where she stood. He seemed very charming as he smiled and spoke with her, though something deep inside her was strangely on edge. She had met her fair share of people in her journeys across Rohan and Gondor, some good and some bad. There had been plenty who had appeared quite pleasant at first who had turned out to be something quite different. There was something about him...was he somehow being too charming? She pushed the thought down, she was being paranoid. It was a beautiful day, it was the summer festival, it was her first customer, it was time to be positive.

"Of course sir," she responded, picking out a pen she felt would be most suitable for such a handsome gentleman, as well as the two inkwells. She glanced behind him to check no one else was in the shop before reaching under the counter for the item she had prepared especially for the day. "Here we are," she said as she placed the items together in front of him. "A pen, 2 inkwells, and the...special item. No charge for the last part of course."

Eldrith - "Faire Food, Hot and Fresh Marketstals”

Westu Amadrith Hal... *She greeted in return, and laughed as she saw Cnith and Getale greet you.* And who have we here? *She saw two of the children run enough in the bright exuberance of those who knew a world of safety and joy. It did her heart good. Had she wanted children? Yes. THere was time still, technically but it was.. running out soon and she could not see herself starting a family with anyone. Not when there were secrets to be held, and work to be done..

She moved closer to the stall, grinning up at Heardwine and nodding to Frithwine with warm enthusiasm* It's good to see you here again.. *she added to her friend* . I am sorry.. I should have kept in touch more but the.. estate.. *she shrugged. One duty and heart had warred with another and she'd been rewarded well enough when Lady Bereth had come and there was an estate to hand back over.

I have words about the inn.. *she muttered, looking over her shoulder to make certain no one was watching.* And plans to join the cavalry as soon as the festival is done..

Thalionwen, CweÞ Ciese

"Zarâm! Is that you???" Thali said in a loud whisper, from where she crouched behind the counter. "Come back here!"

She pulled the orc behind the counter with her, so that they were both ducking in the shadows.

"I'm hiding from a lot of people," she said. "The seamstress, for starters. More or less all of Rohan, after that. And please don't be so loud, no one here knows I'm planning to up stakes and move to Mordor yet! You said you wanted cheese though--I have plenty of cheese. You can take whatever you like, but I recommend the Bree. There's a big wheel of it over by the window, all wrapped and ready to go. And as for the scavenger hunt, here."

Thalionwen pressed an item into Zarâm's large, unwashed hand.

(@Dimcairien Luiniel: the item Thali has handed to Zarâm is a small goat's cheese, wrapped in cloth and bound with twine)

Zarâm - CweÞ Ciese, The Streets, Leoht Min Fyr

Thali startled a bit when Zarâm entered the shop and urged her to come back behind the counter. Once she stepped close enough, the Rohir woman pulled Zarâm down behind the counter and explained that she was hiding from a lot of people. And that nobody in Rohan yet knew that she was planning to move to Mordor.

"I will take some of that cheese you mentioned," Zarâm said as Thali placed a wrapped parcel in her hand, which Zarâm slipped into the little pouch she wore on her waist. It was beyond filthy, which ensured that any and all secret items she received during the course of the Scavenger Hunt would also become filthy.

As she began to walk towards the door, and after picking up a wheel of the suggested Brie cheese, Zarâm asked, "Is there anybody you need me to kill or seriously maim so you make your escape from his oppressive nation of horse-lovers?" She wasn't certain if she could call the Rohir woman a friend, as orcish communities rarely went in that direction, but there was an innate desire to preserve and assist those of a certain persuasion, and Thali certainly fit that description. At any rate, the woman knew how to cook and Zarâm had enjoyed the palate that was not maggoty bread.

After Thali's response, Zarâm nodded and went back out into the streets, wondering where the next best place to go was. Perhaps it would be wise to avoid the seamstress shop for now. If she went in there, she was very likely to try and murder the proprietor.

Glancing around, Zarâm decided that the next best place to go would be the odd looking shop that had flaming things in the window. She walked down the street once again startling the majority of the fairgowers. Once she had procured a few more items, perhaps it would do to simply wander the fairgrounds striking fear into the hearts of all attendees.

Opening the door, Zarâm stamped into the shop, wrinkling her nose in disgust at the the smell which accosted her nostrils. "What is that stench?" gasped, trying to get a breath that was not full of sticky sweet. She noticed the shopkeeper (Beda) "And I am here on the scavenger hunt. What monstrosity must I carry with me from this shop?"

Golde ge Eorcanstan: NPC: Sheemie Rheus

Sheemie came huffing and puffing into the marketplace. His pink straw-hat bounced on his broad back, the little cart he pushed juddered and creaked as he hurried over the cobbles. Two stalls stood empty of goods or customers; the others were all doing a roaring trade.

Where was the Beda-sweoster? She'd promised to be here and help him set things up.

Sheemie couldn't read: hoping one of the two empty pitches WAS meant for him, he began unpacking his cart. Soon a bright array of goods lay on a table. They were mainly cheap trinkets - 'Bert had left the shop stock seriously depleted - but they sparkled in the sunlight, making an impressive display despite their humble materials.

"Roll up! Roll up!" Sheemie hooted, Michæl his wee mouse a-shoulder, "jools and shinies here... All very pretty! Thief hunt surprises too, if you're looking!"

Ellisiva, scavenging at:
Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica
Proprietor: Taethowen

After taking a month off following the despair of the Tower of Might, Ellisiva's father had sent her to go and acquire him a horse from the Horselords. She had arrived in Rohan just as they were beginning to get everything ready for the Summer Festival. Though badger chasing and river rafting didn't appeal to the woman, she was rather drawn to a scavenger hunt. Scavenger suited her perfectly, and hunt was one of the things she did best. Therefore she found herself at the first shop which was clothing and needlework. Ellisiva paused upon entering, the interior dim to protect the fabrics on the shelves, and let her eyes adjust. She had no cloak or hood to remove, as the day was warm, and stood in her customary deep red gown, viewing the wares and deciding if she could tell her father than the Rohir were lock and stock out of horses but didn't her new dress look lovely?

Approaching the counter, and the proprietor @Taethowen behind it, Ellisiva smiled gently, for once not trying to convey fear and murder with her eyes, and said in hushed tones, "I don't suppose you have anything...mysterious for sale? You know, something special and secret?"

NPC Beda (12 years old) Leoht Min Fyr

Beda made it back to Leoht Min Fyr after watching the parade of contestants for the Miss/ter Meduseld contest. She was happy to note that she had missed no customers (or so she guessed, at least there was no one awaiting her return).

As she busied herself straightening up her table of wares, she could hear the roar of the crowd as it was announced which contestants would be moving on in the competition. Oh how she wished she could be there to watch! That dwarf in purple (@Elarith) sure had caught her eye, even if the beard on a lady was a little unusual (well, a lot unusual, if truth be told) for the Riddermark. She really hoped the dwarf had made it through.

Finally satisfied that all was in order, she looked up and almost dropped the candle she had in her hand. Was that ... no, could not be ... but it looked like ... no, it must be someone in costume for some sort of theatre act for the Festival. Timidly, Beda went as close as she dared to the newcomer (Zarâm) (@Dimcairien Luiniel) and said, her voice croaking a little, "Oh, I have something for you right here." She picked up a package, held it out gingerly, and added, "It's a wall sconce, with a spear and shield engraved on its base. Each hunter gets the same item, but each is made slightly differently. I ... I hope you like yours! Good luck with the scavenger hunt!"

Before Zarâm had a chance to take the item from her, Beda suddenly remembered something. "Oh, dear!" she almost cried out loud. She had promised Sheemie (@Aodh Hammerhelm) she would help him set up for the festival. Instead she had been lollygagging about, watching pageants and wistfully sniffing the air at all the delicious aromas. I must hurry over to check on him as soon as I am done here, she thought, wishing the strange creature were gone, for she was starting to suspect that was no costume.

Taethowen - Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

Before Starbreeze had a chance to answer about the apron, the bell on the door jingled again. "I'm sorry, excuse me a moment," Taethowen said, and stood to greet the next customer.

"Welcome to Awesnis!" Taeth greeted the woman (Ellisiva) in the lovely red gown, and smiled back as she asked about mysterious, secret item for sale.

"Ah, yes," Taethowen reached under the counter to a small basket and held it out to Ellisiva, dropping it in her palm. "I do believe this is what you came here for, then. Is there anything else I can help you with today?"

Starbreeze - Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

"Well, I am very pleased to meet you Taethowen Anhyrne," The shop door opened again and another customer came in, diverting Taeth's attention for a moment. Starbreeze took the opportunity to whisper a few words and flick her fingers in the direction of the Eriador linens. When she had Taeth's attention again, the wizard commented "It certainly is busy in here today, no wonder you were in need of an apprentice. I don't think you'll need to worry about the cheese smell again however, unless you plan to go..travelling...again? After all, it is well known that fabrics and smelly foods don't mix well." she said, waggling her eyebrows and with a wry grin.

"I would be most happy to do a trial run, and the apron sounds well within my capabilities. I did a lot of hemming on those robes, wizards are forever catching their robes in doors or on rocks or on fire. And every wizard needs plenty of pockets, you never know when you'll need somewhere to put something. You'll have to show me where to find the materials though - needles and thread, and the apron itself of course." and she looked around her to see if she could see any of the items she would need nearby.

Frost, Exiting Pen and Ink and Meandering Toward CweÞ Ciese

He bowed graciously and gave the proprietress a smile. She was wary of him, he could tell. She had been perhaps the only person so far that had been this whole trip. “Thank’ee kindly ma’am. This pen is indeed marvelous! I’ll be able to write many a decent letter now.”

He took the secret item with exaggerated secretiveness and slipped into his tunic. He winked, bowed again, and was off again, back out into the bright sunlight. The sounds of the market were picking up, the low hum of voices was all around him, music, too, was being played from some indeterminant location, it was a lilting, jolly sort of tune that had a natural bounce to it. He wasn’t sure if he liked it or not. Music was not uncommon where he came from, it was just… different.

A child ran passed him, carrying the largest, brightest candied apple Frost had ever seen. With a quick, well-aimed kick, the child went flying, his candied apple soaring in the opposite direction. Deftly, he caught it by the stick at took a huge bite. It was so delicious! It had the perfect amount of sweet and tart. He chewed and chewed as the child got up and dusted himself off. He looked at Frost with a look of horror and unutterable misery, his treat captured by an enemy. He wiggled his eyebrows and took another bite. The child ran off, undoubtedly to tell his parents that a big scary man had stolen his apple. Frost laughed, and took another bite. It really was delightful.

As he meandered through the market, his eyes fell on the place he most wanted to visit: CweÞ Ciese, Thali’s cheese shop. Business, pleasure, and a step closer to winning the scavenger hunt.

“I hear this is the best place to get cheese in all the Riddermark,” he eased his way in and leaned against the frame. “Hello, Thalionwen.”

Zarâm - Leoht Min Fyr, The Streets, Isengafaeme Smithing

The proprietor of this shop was a young girl, who was also dreadfully startled to see an orc appear in her shop. Zarâm did her best to look large and intimidating as always, and it took every bit of effort to not threaten the girl at knife point. "Must be calm for Thali," she murmured. "It won't do to murder people here … just yet." The girl (Beda) tentatively handed her a wrapped package. Zarâm took the offered item, which to her great relief was not one of the disgusting scented candles.

As she exited the shop, Zarâm took a look around. Perhaps there was an idea here for her shop of odds and ends. Maybe scented candles would be a good idea to have there, but of course, they would be scents such as "burnt flesh" and "stinky feet" instead of this awful floral stuff. Her nostrils hadn't been accosted in such a manner since the Imladris Maze.

Finally back out in the streets, she thought she saw a familiar body (Frost) walking past a small boy and stealing his candied apple. Zarâm grinned evilly. It was good to know that there was another member of the Mordor contingent here to help Thali make her grand exit, whenever that was supposed to occur. But before she could catch up to him, he disappeared into CweÞ Ciese. Zarâm shrugged, knowing she'd likely run into him again at a later point in the Scavenger Hunt.

As she continued to make her way down the street, Zarâm decided that before procuring the next item, it might be best to obtain some sustenance and so she went up to the food stall. The patrons there (Cnith and Getale) both started a bit when she approached. "I'll have the badger on a stick," Zarâm announced, fumbling in her pouch for a bit of currency, which she slapped on the counter in front of Getale. A few minutes later she had her "badger on a stick" and left the refreshment stand, much to the relief of the two patrons.

Munching on her procured snack, which was actually decent fare (Thali had been teaching everybody in On The Rocks some basics of cuisine and whoever said orcs didn't have good taste buds?) Zarâm headed for the blacksmith shop, Isengafaeme Smithing. It was another shop that she hoped smelled of sweat and other bodily odors. Upon entering the shop, she looked around for the propetiter and upon seeing (Rhys) she said, "I'm here on the scavenger hunt." And after a moment added, "And do you happen to have any instruments of torture?"

Ellisiva, heading to:
Second Skin Saddle and Tack
Proprietor: @Gwai
Tack and horse supplies.

Ellisiva raised her palm to eye level, examining the silver thimble which now sat there. "Thank you" she said to the lady shop keeper, "Your shop is lovely and your wares are particularly fine. I think I will return to order some pieces from you shortly, but for now I must continue my search." She curled her hand around the thimble and slipped it into the pouch hanging at her waist. One down, several to go. Ellisiva exited the shop, back out into the market and looked up and down for her next location. To her left was a shop with racks of bridles hanging outside, shining and highly polished. She strode purposefully towards it and breathed in the happy scent of leather and horses as she entered. She felt almost more at home here than among the fabrics of the first shop. "Greetings" she said to the proprietor, "I come here, seeking your secret item, if you can give it to me?"

Gwai waved goodbye to Bereth and headed to her shop to open up for the day, sipping on the drink she had purchased from Getale. Should she have gotten food at the same time? Probably. She usually regretted it when she didn't. She was just debating if she had time to run back to the food stand when the little bell above the door jingled. A woman in a long red dress was there, asking for the scavenger hunt item. "Oh yes!" Gwai replied happily, digging around in a bucket behind the counter. "Here you go!" she said, handing Ellisiva (a curry comb). "Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with! Best of luck in the rest of the scavenger hunt!" she said with a smile.

Taethowen - Awesnsis Gærwe Nædleprica

"Wonderful, I look forward to seeing you again soon, then!" Taeth smiled as Ellisiva said she would be returning in the future. "Good luck with the rest of the scavenger hunt!"

As Ellisiva exited the shop, Taeth turned back to Starbreeze, who commented on the business of the shop. When Starbreeze commented that she didn't need to worry about the cheese smell anymore, Taeth smiled and took a deep breath in. While she hadn't been able to detect the scent of cheese before, the shop did smell fresher, and that was always welcome.

"Honestly, it wasn't so much traveling as I was... running away from myself, I think," Taeth confessed, and she motioned for Starbreeze to follow her to the back of the shop so she could show her where to find things.

"But I will have to travel from time to time. I have family land in the Eastfold that I'll need to check in on--I was fortunately able to hire a steward for it recently--and I'll need to make trips to some of my suppliers from time to time. Though the most urgent lately is replacing that Eriador linen," Taeth weakly laughed.

Taeth had divided the back of the shop from the front with a long curtain. It could be pulled back, especially in winter to allow heat to better flow through the shop, but right now since she was still getting the shop organized after the last disastrous seamstress who'd not really been there legally, it was kept drawn shut. Strewn about nearly every flat surface were half-finished projects that had no matching client records, a few bolts of fabric full of flaws, and other odds and ends that she needed to finish organizing.

There was one shelf, though, that Taeth had cleared, and she'd lined it with baskets to hold her newest commissions, and pulled Elarith's apron down.

"Here's the apron that needs finishing. You're welcome to work in the front of the shop or back here, where ever you're most comfortable. Needles and thread are under the countertop out front."

Amadhrill with (NPC) family at Faire Food

«You see that girl, with more firey hair, that's our Ædelwyn, she's nearly ten.» Amadhrill pointed to a group of three girls flocking together, one with hair the color of gold, not the straw color most usual among the Rohir. For those who had known the hælend in her younger days, the daughter was easily identified, though Ama's hair was not as brightly gold any more, the gold could still be seen in her hair. Then she pointed to two boys bowing their heads together, obviously up to something.

«And over there, the shorter boy, that's Glædwine, he's seven...» Her brows wrinkle for a moment as she watches the two boys, «I do hope their not up to some mishief..»

Heardwine wriggled in Frithwine's arms, even with the still warm cake in his small hand. «It is a good to finally meet you, Eldrith, Ama's told us much about you, and the pub and Getale and Cnith.» Frith smiled warmly to Eldrith. «But you must excuse Heard and me. Stay and have a chat with Eldrith, dear. I'll take Heard to Isengafaeme Smithing for the scavenger hunt. Ama nodded and gave her husband's arm a squeese and the boy a little kiss on the cheek before returning her attention to Eldrith.

«It is very good to see you too again too, freond min! I have missed you.» There was a small sadness in her face as she heard the appology. «I am sorry too, I should've taken the ride to the Freablod estate and invited you to our house... And you know I was never much good with letters and writing, I only did what was necessary»

Then she smiled more brightly. «But now we are here again...» As Eldrith lowered her voice, Ama leaned closer and spoke softly in return. «News of the Inn you say?! Pray, tell!» She shook her head in laughter and disbelief as the cavalry was mentioned again. «You in the cavalry... even if you say you will only wield the cooking knife...»

Starbreeze - Awesnsis Gærwe Nædleprica

The wizard got to her feet surprisingly gracefully for one of such apparent age, collected her staff (the hat she left on the counter), and followed Taeth through a dividing curtain to the back of the shop, listening to the proprietress as she explained the various demands on her time which might call her away from the shop. "Well, should you be happy with my work you can always rely on me to keep an eye on things here if you have to go away on business" she said with a wink, as she looked around the space at the back of the shop. It was quite crowded, but nevertheless it was clear which part of the mess Taethowen had taken responsibility for as it was the only shelf that was neatly organised.

She gently took the apron that Taeth passed to her from the shelf. "Ahh, oiled canvas, very good material for a protective garment like an apron, even if it does make harder work of the stitching. Does the quoted cost include rubbing oii along the stitchings afterwards to improve water resistance around the needle holes? I'll work out front if you're sure I won't be in the way, I like to watch people while I work." she grinned and pushed back the curtain again to move to the front of the shop.

She set her staff back against the counter and made poked and prodded around the things under the counter top for a while, pulling out different threads, hmming and then putting them back, until finally she found one she thought suitable, and matched it with an appropriate needle for the fabric, before making herself comfortable on the chair again and spreading the apron out. She positioned the pockets where Taeth's detailed notes indicated, and started work stitching those on.

Fair Grounds - entering and Refreshment Stand

Shivased entered the fairgrounds and paused to wait for her little brother to catch up, taking a minute to look around. The marketplace, now the fairgrounds, had been decorated beautifully for the Summer Festival, drawing crowds from Rohan and beyond. Beside the market gate a large table with two familiar faces behind it made her grin and she turned in that direction. Mead and food, that was her first stop. Then she would wander and have a look at things.

Something thumped into her back as she turned towards the table, making her stop suddenly and glare at Jacen, her fifteen year old brother, who stepped back quickly and grinned sheepishly down at her. She resisted the urge to smack him and cursed inwardly that, at fifteen, he surpassed her by at least two inches. He would be tall. Watch where you're going! she chastised, then pointed in the direction of her shop. Go get the stall set up outside the shop. We're running late and I hope nobody has been waiting for us. I'll get some food and be with you in a bit.

As Jacen hurried off to do as he had agreed - mind the shop for a bit so she could have a time off and enjoy the festival - she headed towards the food stand. Getale! Cnith! Westu hal! she greeted the people there warmly, a broad smile splitting her face at the sight of them. She received equally warm greetings, though Cnith took time out of cooking to study her suspiciously. No hidden weapons on ya, marshal? he asked, his eyes narrowing as Getale laughed. The poor man still hadn't forgiven her for one too many fights in his pub after weapons had been snuck in. No, nothing, I promise. Just a short sword, which you can see is plainly visible. Shivased pulled the skirts of her simple green gown out and turned in a circle, showing the man that the only weapon was the sword hanging at her hip. She didn't bother to mention the dagger in her boot. When he nodded gruffly and went back to cooking she smiled at Getale. I swear he'll never let me forget anything, even though none of the things that have
happened have been my fault!
She gave a dramatic sigh. Oh well. I'll have some Citrus Mead, Juice, two badger-on-a-stick and two Mirigetunge please.

Once supplied with her food she said goodbye to the Aeldsel folk and headed further into the marketplace, ready to have a look around. The Mirigetunge were safely tucked into her bag with the juice and a badger stick for Jacen, while she sipped her mead and munched on the other badger stick as she walked.

Ye Olde Pet Shoppe
NPC: Jacen

Arriving at his sister's shop, the fifteen year old quickly unlocked the door and headed in. They had set everything up earlier, it all just needed to be brought outside to the canopy and table they had set up in front of the door. He made quick work of it, pulling out a series of leashes and collars, toys, sacks of foods and treats. After that came a small pen with puppies, two colourful exotic birds that would hopefully draw in interested festival-goers, a small cage of songbirds and two cages of rodents - two ferrets in one and two bunnies in another.

Within half an hour the stand was set up. The exotic birds were set on either side, their bright colours and occasional loud squawks better than any banner or crier. He pulled out a stool as well and sat down next to the puppy pen, where he could watch people come and go while he waited for his sister, and keep an eye on the playful animals and ensure they didn't escape at the same time.

Seleðryðe
Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

It was busy. It was so busy, in fact, that Seleðryðe was almost tempted to come back at a different time. But the proprietress did have some options in stock, and at least all of the distractions meant that she would be able to browse and evaluate her options for a few minutes, without the pressure of making an immediate decision. "Thank you, I'll take a look!"

She was not sure how much the Eriador linen would cost, but it was beautiful fabric. A shame something had happened to damage some of it - there were not very many options for colors. She ran her hands over one bolt of pale blue, then picked it up and unwrapped enough so that she could hold it up to the light coming in from the window. It was smooth, and finely woven, and soft to the touch. It would be ideal - if she could afford it. And if there was enough material here ... she looked at the amount left on the bolt, and did some quick estimates. Ideally, she would want about four yards for a dress, but she could squeeze it out of three if she had to.

Then there was the minor detail that she really could use two dresses. Maybe a nicer one in the Eriador linen, and then an everyday one in the rougher material? She didn't have a place to stay yet, let alone a place to dye fabric, but surely the shop-owner - Taethowen, she thought it was? - could do that. And in the meantime she could start on the first dress.

At least she had a plan. Whether that plan would survive learning the price of the finer material, she had no idea. She looked around, and saw that Taethowen had - at least for the moment - disappeared. Not a problem. That gave her just a little longer to work up her courage and think of the best way to ask about that job ...

Taethowen - Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

Taeth was delighted that Starbreeze mentioned oiling the seams. "Yes, the cost does include that," Taeth smiled. "And today seems to be a very good day for people-watching in the shop, let alone through the window! This Summer Festival really is drawing quite the crowd.

"Please, make yourself comfortable at the counter, then," Taeth said. "I'm going to go check on my other customer."

They both returned to the front of the store, and Taeth crossed over to Seleðryðe. "Have you found what you were looking for with the linen?" she asked.

"I think so - at least, I hope." She smiled at Taethowen. Trying for a good impression. "I need enough material for two dresses, actually; could you tell me how much it would cost for four yards of this one?" She gestured to the pale blue Eriador linen. "If there are four yards of it on the bolt, that is. Though I could work with three if there isn't quite that much here."

She motioned to the coarser, still-natural material. "And would it be possible to get four yards of this, but dyed green? I'm afraid I only just arrived in town, and, well, I don't have a place to dye it myself just yet..." She mentally ordered herself to stop babbling and get to the point. "Actually, speaking of that, are you still looking to hire a seamstress, by any chance? I couldn't help but see the sign in the window as I came in ..."

Thalionwen, CweÞ Ciese

"Oh, hello Frost," Thalionwen said unenthusiastically, never mind the fact that she'd invited him to Edoras in the first place. "Sorry, it's been a bit of a day. I see you've been having a nice time stealing candy from babies, though."

Getting to her feet, she appeared from her haven behind the counter and leaned on its admittedly rather dusty wooden top.

"I suppose you're here for this?" Thali asked, unearthing a basket from below the counter. Digging through it, she handed Frost a small packet.

"You can buy anything else you want like an ordinary person right now," Thali warned. "But if you want to work out something more...underhanded...you'll have to come back after dark. I don't do crime in broad daylight. Yet, at least."

(OOC @Bïfrøst: Thalionwen has handed you a small goat's cheese, wrapped in cloth and bound with twine)

Ber grinned down at her very first hunt prize, absolutely delighted! She laughed as she thanked Elarith. “Oh I heartily agree! Go Green!”

Fingering the gift as she stuffed it into the lightweight faded floral linen bag slung over her shoulder, she realized it was actually rather repulsive, but she still, she did like it.

She peeked into the window of Taethowen’s shop, not the least surprised that she was quite busy. Just before moving on, she noticed the signs. “What on Arda?!” Had she missed something? She had to laugh, and hoped to pry a reason from her for the change. And then the help wanted sign - hmmm, it was tempting. Ber was fair at mending and simple seams, and it would be a wonderful chance to visit while they worked together. But no, not now, there was home to settle back into first before considering something like offering aid in a shop.

She snapped her fingers and headed into the Second Skin Saddle and Tack and nodded a greeting at the exiting Dwarf. She then greeted @Gwai for the second time that day. “Happy Festival, Gwai. There certainly are a number of visitors from other lands today. I trust business has been brisk?”

“I wonder if I could commission a new headstall? I’m afraid I, um, misplaced my favorite one on my journey away. I think. It was very dark leather with two silver intertwined knots for decoration. And a tiny, stylized “F” at the center. Nothing seriously fancy. I’m in no hurry, I’m sure you’ll be busy with more pressing orders in the weeks ahead.”

“I’d be happy to pay a down payment on it, if you think it’s something you’d like to tackle?”

“And,” she winked, “I’m also taking your advice and pursuing the Scavenger Hunt.”

The last scavenger hunter had just left when @Bereth entered. "Hello, Bereth!" Gwai said cheerfully. "Yes indeed, we don't usually see this many out of towners!" she agreed. "But business most definitely has been brisk, which is always good," she commented. "Have you been to many shops with the scavenger hunt yet?" she asked curiously.

Bereth asked about commissioning a new headstall, describing a design with silver and an initial. "That sounds lovely, I'm sorry you mislaid it!" Gwai commiserated. "How did that happen?" she added curiously. "But yes, that it definitely something I can take care of for you, although with the personalization it will take a little bit of extra time," she warned. "But if you like, you can borrow one until the custom one is ready," she offered. "I have a few used bridles that you are welcome to look through and see if one would work for you for the next week or two while I work on your headstall. And don't worry about the payment until I have it ready, I know you're good for it," she added with a smile. "Oh, yes, and here is your secret item for the scavenger hunt," she said digging behind the counter and handing Bereth (a curry comb). "It never hurts to have an extra one!" she said cheerfully.

Taethowen - Awesnis Gærwe Nædleprica

"The Eriador linen is 8 silver per yard," Taethowen answered Seleðryðe's first question. "And I.. think there might be four yards on there, but I can measure it for you, of course. The natural Rohan linen is 2 silver per yard, as-is. I don't dye here, but I do have the name of a local cloth-dyer. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to meet with her about rates yet, so I'm afraid I can't tell you what the full cost would be right now, but I will send a message by the end of the day, if that is suitable for you."

Taethowen began to pull both bolts of material out, but caught sight of a familiar face (Bereth) peeking through the window. She smiled and waved, but wasn't sure if the woman saw her before she walked on. It appeared that Bereth had been gawking at the "No food or drink" sign, and Taeth laughed silently to herself when she remembered that the last time Bereth had been there, they'd practically had a picnic in the back. Ah well.

As she brought her attention back to the inside of the shop, Taeth realized that Seleðryðe was asking about the apprenticeship position as well.

"Ah, yes!" Taeth smiled. What luck to have not one, but two people respond to the advertisement is such a short time! "I'm looking to bring on at least two, possibly even three, seamstresses. What type of experience do you have?"

Eldrith - "Faire Food, Hot and Fresh Marketstals”

*She followed Amadhrill's reactions and it wasn't hard to pick out the children amidst the crowd.

Ten.... *She said the word considering, then canted her head* Old enough to start being a helping hand to you or come along. As to news.. *she shook her head.* No particular news it's just that.. with Lady Bereth returned, I should have more.. time. And if I need to be in town for the cavalry, I.. well.. I was thinking I might want to.. oversee.. the inn. A bit. Not so much that it would interfere with my duties of course. So I'd need someone to run it with me...

*She could hear the banter between Cnith and Shivased, while Getale looked on, amused, then could not help but lift her own voice to add to it.* I am sorry, Marshall. I will talk with him. I promise.
*SHe winked at Cnith though and added with a much more hushed voice.* I bet she has a boot knife at the very least.. Not that you heard that from me...

*Looking back at Ama she considered. They were much more busy now, both of them. They were older. Ama had a family. And she had the estate. And soon the cavalry, no matter how hard that was to believe. In a way it was madness to add one more thing, but there was something.. missing. And perhaps.. perhaps they could just pull it off.. *

We could alternate... day and night times. And Cnith and Getale are well seasoned by now. I KNOW they'd be happy to see us back.
