I'm not a creative writer or photographer, but this morning this is just too...unexpected to pass up. One of the good things about living where I do is the experience in the woods and nature every day. A few days ago a cool and large blue jay, yesterday an intense moot of massive turkeys gathered in the middle of my yard. And well this morning, I will just start with a quote:

Worse still it brought thousands of dark-grey and black moths, some nearly as big as your hand, flapping and whirring round their ears. Flies and Spiders

Right there on the side of my house, a giant moth. It was sunny and super bright out, but if I was in the pitch-black of Mirkwood I would have been just as creeped out as Thorin's company. It would have easily been the scariest insect I've ever seen with my own eyes. Even in the brightness I was hesitant to go outside, fearing this cross between a tarantula and moth would eat my face:

After snapping a few photos quickly, it flew off to hopefully Canada or somewhere far away, like in another universe back to Mirkwood.

Can I just say how impressed I am that you managed to get close enough to photograph it. I'd have probably needed a telescopic lens. I don't know moth anatomy so am probably not going to use the right word, but it's antennae (antlers more like) are really cool - I like how feather-like they are (or the right one is, at least).

LOL - I love this title! I was afraid of the contents, to be honest, opening it up, but your photograph of this monster moth is so detailed. Good camera work! Only criticism would be we have no frame of reference for size ... could you put your hand really close next time?

:smiley9:

I'm no expert, but it looks like it might be a Gypsy Moth. What do you think? They are not currently known for eating faces off ...

Woah! Firstly, welcome.to the Cottage, so glad you've popped in and made a thread!
Secondly, I am likewise impressed at how close you got. That is an intense moth.

Haha I am also curious about a frame.of reference for size, but am not suggesting your hand... XD

Thank you, everyone! First photo I was maybe about a foot a way and had camera on full zoom. The 2nd one I took a deep breath and inched closer. After quickly getting the picture I exhaled and, must have blown on it because it flew away.

Nia I believe antennae is the correct part, but I'm not a moth anatomy expert either. It makes sense to say they're antennae!

Lirimaer ooh, it does sort of look like a male gypsy moth. I had one of my friends from Texas comment with a picture of a giant moth, and saying those massive moths are everywhere in Texas, because 'everything is bigger in Texas.'

It's funny, because I'm currently reading The Hobbit again and just last evening finished Flies and Spiders. The description of all the pitch-black animals and insects is always fascinating and gives me the creeps. Makes me wonder what if I ever encountered something that reminded me of being in Mirkwood, and this morning there's the largest moth I had ever seen on the side of my house. :smiley9: Funny too, I live in an area where a while ago, maybe the 70's the black squirrel was introduced into my area and they're everywhere now. Black squirrels have taken over, so maybe that's my next endeavor to get a photo of a black squirrel for this thread. They're a lot harder though, pretty much as soon as you see one they're gone.

Burnt Toast, I do have another one that I took further away and not on zoom for more of a reference. One of those side panels width is 4 inches and about the size of just the palm of my hand. So I think if it were to land it would cover my palm. Might be able to guess a wingspan with this one that was further away:

This is not exactly what I expected to find in CoLP, but I love it. I gave a very embarrassing yelp and jumped halfway across the room at a cockroach the other day, but I actually think moths are kinda cool. Dark and shadowy, but not ABSOLUTE EVIL, like certain other bugs :?. I love looking at the detail on its wings! If you scroll down so you can't see the head, they could almost be the feathers of a bird. An owl?

Woah. That's...quite large. We used to get some giant moths in our garden about the size, I used to call them butterfly moths, as they were more colorful than most moths I'd seen. Unsure if that was their real name, though.

That is ... huge. I think @Aerlinn also has an amazing point on the detail in those wings, but what really sends me is those antennae (or whatever the right word is :smiley9:). They look like skeleton leaves!

haha, thanks @Aerlinn , this I believe is my first post in CoLP, even if you go back to the old plaza. I'm glad it's gone well. Even after all these years, I think the description of the pitch-black dark of Mirkwood, with it's dark creatures creeps me out. If I encountered that moth in the pitch-black of Mirkwood, I would have never gone outside or gotten that close :smiley12: . I agree though that the colorfulness of this one made it less evil-looking

Where I live is infested with black squirrels, but they're trickier to sneak up on. My hope is to get an acceptable picture of one to share in this thread. And maybe any other critters that remind me of the creepiness of Mirkwood.

@Burnt Toast I seriously thought this was the offspring of like a tarantula and a butterfly. :smiley16:

@Androthelm I think the antennae is my favorite part too.

He's away at the moment, so I'm afraid you'll have to deal with his minions (also it is kinda my job to look into bugs, too :smiley10:)

A new strange bug encounter? Mirkwood also had it's mosquito infestation, but this thing did not look like a mosquito. I thought, what if this is a cross between a murder hornet and a mosquito...I mean it like shed a feather from its back!

But after some research, it is a "robber fly" (aka a assassin fly)...which sounds scarier than what it actually is. Supposedly they are not annoying pests like a fruit fly or mosquito and are quite beneficial to have around. So stay around and ward off the bad buggers

I am unfortunately one of those irrational people who has a bit of a phobia of insects and spiders in general (although I also can't stand to see them killed - I can't even bring myself to kill mosquitoes! - so I generally suffer in silence/ spend a comical amount of time trying to coax them outside without getting too close).

All of which is to say I am finding this whole thread mildly distressing, but equally incredibly fascinating. I'm not used to getting to admire(?) these sorts of creatures this close up. Like that assassin fly thing - it just looks like it is wearing an absolutely killer pair of sunglasses.

@Nia heh sorry  and I don't think I have sunglasses that cool.

I'm much the same, I'll only swat and destroy mosquitoes if they're sucking my blood. But after getting frequently snacked on by mosquitos, if I know I'm going out to a campfire or being outside a lot...washer dryer sheet in your back pocket! Wards off mosquitoes and makes them go after the other people sitting around a campfire.

Spiders and I get along amicably...except brown recluses, ack, I've seen them do some nasty stuff to people they bite. But I'm ok if I see a spider crawling around on the floor or bathroom. I'll even give it the right-of-way and talk to it "Oh, sorry, yeah just go where you have to. Hey I think I saw a fly in the room next door, if you want to go take care of that for me, that would be great! Thanks!"

I even struggle when they're actually in the process of making me their lunch   . I remember spotting one biting my leg once and I just kind of waggled my leg really energetically trying to get it to detach itself - needless to say that didn't really work. I had no idea about that little trick - might give that a go sometime - thanks! I don't think we have any spiders which can actually cause any harm whatsoever over here - I am mostly frightened by the fact they appear from absolutely no where, when I least expect it, and then they scuttle around menacingly and often disappear equally as fast. I know they're helpful to keep the fly population down though, so although they unnerve me, they do have my respect.

Ahaha @Nia "mildly distressing but equally incredibly fascinating" - took the words right out of my mouth! :googly:

I am intrigued by this latest bug's many feet pokey things. Are all bug feet so intricate? Hmm.

I increasingly try to be nice to bugs except for these gross giant house centipede things that are all over the place in summer here, and if I catch a mosquito it's dead. Yuck.

Yup, that sounds unpleasant, @Tarawen !
As this is an insect art thread, I hope @Boromir88 won't mind my adding one final little anecdote before avidly ANTicipating the next photo installment (sorry if you do mind!)

So we had what is apparently known as Flying Ant Day on Sunday. Up until Sunday 12 July 2020, I had been blissfully unaware this was even a thing, but when I left the house that day, it was impossible to walk down the street and not squish at least 5 with every footstep (I was keeping my eyes firmly upwards). And they kept hitting my face too, it was horrendous; there were thousands of them, and they were absolutely everywhere. I was so dumbstruck by this weird phenomenon that I took to Twitter to research if anyone else had noticed this weird happening on the streets of London. And there they were, hundreds of people all across the country on Twitter celebrating that a planned event had actually gone ahead in 2020. And now I've spent the last 2 days being simply AMAZED by nature and that these ants, all across the island all had the precise same thought at the same time to come popping out the ground, or wherever they came from. Quite something. Still gross.

@Tarawen I think so, kind of look like little cactus needles. I believe it's supposed to help with gripping/catching?

@Nia I don't mind at all! I've never heard of Flying Ant Day, wow. I'm not sure if I would ever go outside for that. I'm not too fond of ants. I won't step on them or spray poison around my house. It is neat when I guess they'r out foraging, how they all sort of march in a single file. Every time I see ants I think of orcs after Sauron's destruction.

I can't wait to see what other insect or creature I see next. When you see something so up close I just think what is this creation? Like you said with the robber fly's sunglasses  . Nature is so cool.
