Léowyn w/Swyftfoot
Horse and rider had just gotten underway chasing what they thought was a badger, when an ear-shattering bang caused both of them to simultaneously spurt forwards, startled. Swyftfoot bolted forwards for a few strides, but Léowyn swiftly reined him in, regaining control of her steed. He stepped sideways, more nervous than upset, but she couldn't blame him. She had been startled equally as bad. The rohir glanced behind her, trying to decipher where the noise had come from and what had created such a fantastic boom. Her gaze swept the street, but other than a drifting haze of smoke nothing seemed terribly out of the ordinary, until a little girl started screaming, wailing and pointing. The girls' older brother rushed over to her, and tried to calm her and quiet her before their parents came.
With the echoing in her ears, it took Léowyn a few moments to truly understand and comprehend what happened. Apparently, the boy had gotten a hold of some of Gandalf's wiz poppers for kids, and had been playing with them. Unfortunately, a badger (a badger!) had come crashing through his fireworks and accidentally set them all off at once, creating the BOOM! sound which had startled her and frightened Swyftfoot. Between the little girl's tears and her brother trying desperately to calm her, (as he wasn't supposed to have the fireworks in the first place), she gathered the badger had taken off in an easterly direction. Urging the nervous young colt in an easterly direction, she rubbed her ears and tried to focus on the badger's whereabouts.

Summer Festival Badger Chase -The Chase is On!
OCC:I'm so confused.. do we start with 7 rolls or 9? I'm following the first post that says 7 but I just wanted to check...
However when she almost had that badger in her grasp; Fenja suddenly roared forward whined, and rather panicked wanted to run off. It took some time but standing up and pulling hard on the reins she managed to stop her from bolting further. She looked behind them to see what had startled her horse, but could see no imminent threath behind them. Well Fenja was a nervous horse and you never knew what little thing would startle her. Ides was just happy she had ran in the same direction as the badger.
Seeing it close by she moved Fenja towards the badger; would she finally get it now? Unfortunately the badger had more luck or smarts some would say than she did; a lot more of it! Somehow the little rascal had managed to knock over several tall hay bales. They were too tall to jump over, and now nervous Fenja had enough. She roared back and tried to bolt home. This badger race was not her cup of tea. Struggling for control of her horse, Ides was not paying much attention to her surroundings. Because the badger was coming her way! From nowhere, the badger zoomed forward and scrambled between her horses legs. Another competitor had been chasing it, and he was not paying enough attention to his surroundings either… Just last minute she let go of her reins that were holding Fenja back and her horse jumped out of the way and in the direction of home. It took another little while to gain control back and calm Fenja down to almost standing in place. Now where was that badger?

KingODuckingham ~2~ The Badger bolts into the crowd, and you lost track of it. Paying too much attention to finding the badger, you stop paying attention to your horse, who nearly run over a few of the spectators! As you get on track, you are 4 spaces behind. Describe the crowds’ reaction to your sudden bolt off track!
Amhran ~15~ The badger is up ahead! As you move forward, you are suddenly cut off by another rider, only achieving 1 forward space. How do you feel?
Gwai ~12~ You have no clue whatsoever where the Badger is, you ask the nearest person, but apparently the Badger hadn't been spotted coming this way and now you are behind 4 spaces for traveling backwards to ask the person!
Léowyn ~8~ You have stopped to look for the Badger perhaps hiding among some market ware, when your horse gives a jump and a squeal, the Badger has appeared out of nowhere and bitten him! You move back 1 space to get some medicine from Star’s shop to tend to your mount while the Badger meanders off.
Laewyn ~19~ Thinking you see the badger, you canter forward 5 spaces. However, it is not the badger. What was it that looked so much like a badger?
Talen ~10~ Another horse skids forward in a small patch of mud, smacking into your steed's rump. He startles and dashes forward five spaces! How do you deal with this?
Ides ~9~ From nowhere, the Badger zooms forward and scrambles between your horse’s legs. Apparently another competitor had been chasing it and nearly smashes into you! You must back up 5 spaces to avoid an accident!
OOC: @Idesinholde (thank you! fixed the OP. Clearly I missed that. Everyone has 10 rolls. I gave each person their first roll in the first update, so it just looks like you had 9. In reality that 10th roll came in the first update. )

It had been several minutes since they had encountered the old woman, but Gwai was still unnerved. There was something off about that person. She again told herself she was being unkind, but she had long learned to listen to her instincts. However, whatever nefarious plotting or devious work the woman was up to would have to wait until after the badger chase. Nothing else took priority!
There was still no sign of the badger, so Gwai decided again to ask a pedestrian if they had run into the pesky creature. There were some children playing ball nearby, and Gwai dismounted, tied Brightfyr to a nearby hitching post, and approached the children.
One of the kicks of the ball went wild, and toward Gwai's direction. She jumped to catch it, and, having the attention of the children, threw it back. "Hullo there!" she said cheerfully. The children muttered various versions of hellos back. Undaunted, Gwai continued, "Have any of you seen the badger around here?" she asked with what she hoped was a friendly smile.
The children just looked at her blankly. Finally one of them spoke up. "What's a badger?" he asked blankly. Gwai stared back at him for a moment, wondering if this was some sort of a joke. Realizing it was not, she shook her head sadly. Clearly these childrens' parents needed to improve their parenting skills. "Never mind," she said sadly, shaking her head and walking back to Brightfyr, bemoaning in her head the state of education in Edoras.

Trotting along at a placid pace, Botheid was laser focused on the verge of catching up with the zigzagging badger, who seemed to think doing so would confuse the horde who was after him. Not so much.
He pooped out into the open right ahead of Eógyth, who whoop-whooped in delight! “Gotcha!” she cackled.
Neither noticed the sodden spot to their immediate left at the intersection of five streets, nor the approach of several other competitors, one of which was equally as focused on the badger dead center in the convergence. His speed was too ramped up to allow him to stop in time, and it appeared his plan was to swoop past the badger and scoop him up before anyone else could.
The tall horse slewed slightly sideways as he hit the muddy patch, throwing his aim off, almost throwing his rider off, and narrowly missing a full force collision with Botheid. But it wasn’t a clean miss. Unfortunately, one hind hoof swung out and caught the small pony, who assumed it was his rider smacking him to hurry. Smacking like he’s never felt her smack before! For once, he actually DID speed up, although by then, the badger had as well, taking advantage of the near disaster to scurry off. Again!

Things had been going so well. Ducky had actually caught sight of the badger, thanks to his horse's continued efforts in moving forward, not that it seemed to know what the goal of all this galloping was. This became crystal clear when Ducky had practically leaned forward and right off the horse's back, trying to show it where to go, only for it to bolt sideways...into the crowd! Of all the darned directions. Ducky panicked, yelling:
"Abandon your posts! Flee, flee for your lives!" He watched in horror as the crowd scattered, trying to get out from under the horse's hooves. He wasn't sure what he could do to help them. Many of them seemed to look at him with resentment, fear, and anger. He couldn't blame them. He wasn't a good enough horseman to be respected by the Rohirrim, and the badger was getting further away every second during this distraction. How embarrassing! He called out multiple apologies in all directions, saying:
"I'm sure this horse will be back under control soon! It would never trample one of its own, right? Don't worry! Uhh, just go to take a bathroom break or refresh your coffee or whatever you need to do haha ahhghgghh" he trailed off into shamed incomprehensibility. Was there any recovering from such a public mistake?

There he was. Against all possible odds and in opposition to all her luck so far, THERE HE WAS, that sneaky, stripey ball of fur that Amhran had been struggling so far to find. She urged her horse forward. "Get him, Landan! He's all ours! AUGH!" For just then another rider cut directly in front of her, nearly causing a collision and causing her to lose sight of the badger.
Deep breaths. Deep, calming breaths. Smile, say "no, no, my fault entirely", and resist the temptation to throw something.
Giggling hysterically might not be out of order though.

Laewyn, riding Honey ButterSince she'd been going backwards for a good long while and spending most of her time behind the line, it was a surprise to get back across the start line and going in a forward direction. Of course, the black and white they'd followed was not the badger - ha! Why would it be? It was probably off partying with six year olds and cheese. It turned out to be the handbag of one of the traders lining the route, who wasn't best pleased to have it scooped up and held aloft for all to see.
Realising her mistake, Laewyn let the woman have it back with a swift apology, but adjured her not to leave it on the floor, for its markings would make it too desirable in the current climate.

Well this was not going very well at all! Just when Ides tried hard to think positively that she did have a chance to win this competition they ended up in an even worse situation! A competitor that was doing better than she was (most of them were) had been chasing the badger and evidently that badger was a tricky and smart one, because he had a new trick. When someone got close to capturing him he'd zoom right or left and scramble between the legs of another competitors horse. This effectively had two competitors turning in circles trying to control their horses, and trying to figure out where the badger went! Which is exactly what Ides was doing right now. She was also praying for some better luck because finishing last would be so embarrassing! Leaning forward she hissed into her horses ear "Please calm down so we wont be humiliated."

Badger chasing Talen decided, was more work than he had expected. Back and forth and back forth across the? Se? Riddermarket and he suspected he was barely paces away from where he had started! He wasn't even sure what the winning prize was, come to think of it. Piles of dragon gold? Swords made of diamond? A great steed? Ha! A year's supply of oats, more likely. Right now, what he'd really like to win was a big ol' feather bed with pile of squishy pillows...
"BAMH!"
"Wassit!?" Talen's heavy eyelids snapped back open as his horse dashed forward and he found himself sliding half out of the saddle. "Watch where yer goin' you blighter!" he yelled at the mud-covered horse now coming up to overtake him. Was everyone in the market aiming to run them over?

Welp, once again they were wandering aimlessly, and apparently in circles because there was the Ploughman's Plenty again. Amhran swerved her mount to the other side of the street and turned her face away: after what happened the last time, she was in no hurry to be recognized by the proprietor. Alas, her attempt at hiding was her undoing because she turned full face on into a swarm of midges that were congregating around a fruit stand. A fit of sneezing dislodged most of them from her nose but one was quite determinedly camped out in her left tear duct. Rubbing furiously with one hand, she sought for her hankie with the other and Landan, freed from direction for the moment, took advantage of his rider's distraction to amble back towards the Ploughman's Plenty in search of a snack. He had enjoyed the cheese the little girl dropped when she took off with the badger and was eager for a repetition of the event. Nobody had dropped anything, but the geraniums in the Ploughman's window boxes looked promising...
It wasn't until the geraniums were half gone that Amhran emerged from her hankie, and through streaming eyes beheld her horse's proceedings and the proprietor standing in the doorway viewing the scene with an unreadable expression...
We draw a curtain over the next half hour or so.
When the curtain rises again, we see Amhran and her horse closeted in a back alley, and a single voice raised in passionate expostulation. We are too far away to hear most of it, but we catch the words "greedy pig" and "SO embarrassed" and "in ALL my cavalry years" and even the possibly unforgivable "Aduaidh would NEVER have".
Landan stands and takes it all quietly, a geranium still poking from the corner of his mouth. Is he ashamed? Is he repentant?
These are true mysteries.

Was the badger perhaps a figment of her imagination? Perhaps she had suffered a complete break from reality, and the badger was nothing more than a hallucination, her mind playing evil tricks on her. Gwai sighed. Since there were multiple other badger chasers about it seemed highly unlikely that was the case, but it was still something to consider.
Not particularly paying attention to what Brightyfr was doing as Gwai was having a mild existential crisis, she was startled when she heard shouting.
"Oi!" a shopkeeper yelled at her. "Ain't ya gonna clean that mess up?" the man asked, gesturing angrily toward a pile of poop. It likely was Brightfyr's, but Gwai was surprised. This was Rohan, and horses did their business pretty much wherever they wanted. "You want me to clean it up?" Gwai asked incredulously. The man folded his arms and looked at her. Gwai sighed. It wasn't as if she were hot on the trail of the badger, anyway.
She dismounted and tied Brightfyr to a nearby hitching post, before walking down to the livery stable. "I need to borrow a shovel," she told the ostler. The young man gave her a knowing grin. "The shopkeeper at the Ploughman?" he asked knowingly. Gwai returned his smile. "How did you know?" she said with a laugh, grabbing the shovel he offered and heading back down the street. She kept a halfhearted gaze out for the badger, but was beginning to believe she may be cursed.

Tuckered out briefly by the fleetingly intense little burst of speed, Botheid reverted to her usual plodding rhythm. Eógyth kept lurching upwards in the creaky saddle to seep the streets, shops, alleyways and curious onlookers to see if she could spot the hooded figure again, hoping for further hints to where the badger may have scampered off to. Her lack of attention would often mean her tugging the reigns in directions not intended, and while Botheid didn’t usually need much prodding in locating badgers, one tug caused him to veer much closer to the hindquarters of another competitor’s steed. Her hot breath tickled the hairs on the back of the other’s legs, for which he stamped a hoof and swished his luxurious tail, thinking a fly was pestering him.
The slap of a thousand course horse hairs across her face caught her so off guard that she actually rocked back on her square haunches, catching herself in time not to roll right over backwards onto Eógyth!
+5 and a wee setback of -2 means still +3!
Righting themselves with elaborate effort, Botheid shook her head hard, almost as if to clear it again, snorted, and decided she required nourishment to sustain this bothersome pursuit! Only a half furlong ahead lay a tempting expanse if lush meadow, replete with bobbing yellow flowers that danced on a soft breeze.
As Eógyth was still arranging herself in the saddle, the pony bent and began chomping happily on the sunny blooms, until a bellow stunned her to halt mid munch! “Nae ye don’t! That not be Susans, they be Stinkin’ Willies! Ye daft ...”
She stopped short, leery of all the ears surrounding them, but the pony got the point, spitting out the poisonous floral snack, and ambled onwards. She’d eaten worse!

This time, it wasn't just the horse being skittish. Ducky was legitimately startled by the near-horse pile-up he had just experienced as well. He did not blame his steed for bolting this time. It would have done so even if a mere fly had landed on its bottom, but to do so in the case of a horse landing on one's bottom, Ducky felt, was justified.
He'd had no idea the field was so muddy, but he told his horse, "Well, sirrah, that's just what you get for becoming lazy and sluggish. Had you been going at a proper pace that horse behind us never would have caught up. Now, turn your face forward again. What do you mean, which way is forward? Why, the way to the badger, of course! Don't tell me you've already forgotten what the badger looks like. Even you aren't so brainless. No, of course you aren't brainless, I'm just saying you would have to be to forget what a badger looks like. This one isn't even unusual looking, it's just a normal, average badger. At least, as far as I know."
Ducky considered his own memory of the target. Now he was doubting himself. It had been normal looking, right?

Laewyn, riding Honey ButterThey were on the move again, but slowly, for some reason the crowd was filling the street. It was hard to tell if they knew this was an actual race chase thing, or they thought that somehow being in the way was going to help the process. It might have helped the process if they'd been serving beer, or those nice pastry-wrapped meat parcel thingies. She could smell them from afar and they were calling to her ... which was more than could be said for the badger, which was rapidly losing her interest.
Her friend Ana waved her over again, but she was hemmed in and couldn't move. If it was more 'ideas' about badger collection, then she'd pass, frankly. No amount of the banned substance had lured the thing to her, and she wasn't up for trying new ideas. "I'll meet you in the pub later," she called.

As she was looking around eagerly, keeping her horse still while she swiveled her head back and forth. As she saw where the other riders seemed to be heading she turned her horse in that direction; but before she could give the order to gallop in that direction Fenja whinnied loudly while storming forward. Surprised but ultimately happy Ides wondered if her horse and her had a magical mind connection or something. This needed to be tested out further! Later on while grooming Fenja Ides would discover the swollen be sting but for now she was going with magic.
Spotting that dratted badger Ides saw a little girl feeding him cheese and picking him up. Why on earth had she not brought any cheese? Getting off her horse and walking over to the girl she asked her to please hand over the badger. The win was so close now! But the selfish little girl refused to let him go! How dare she? What did she need 5the animal for? So he could eat all her cheese? As Ides tried to grab him off her she took a step back and ran off. This was why children were a curse! Following the girl with the badger she soon lost sight of her. Too many feet and skirts and being rather little the girl was hard to spot. Hearing some commotion in the crowd she saw people moving out of the way for a badger running towards the grassy plains surrounding Edoras. Hurrying back to her horse Ides was cursing her idea to get off her in the first place.
As she was getting on, and looking for the second stirrup with her left right foot, another horse (a pony really) which was ridden by a young boy skidded forward in a small patch of mud, and smacked into Fenja's rump. This of course had the scardy-cat horse running off in in a panic while Ides worked on on calming her down/stopping her and getting that right foot in the stirrup.

KingODuckingham ~7~Oh, dear. Your horse decided to go to the bathroom in front of The Ploughman’s Plenty and the shopkeeper insisted you clean it up right that instant! You move back 2 spaces to tie up your horse and find a barrel!
Amhran ~17~ You hear a loud noise behind you and you urge your horse on. Advancing 2 spaces, you look back. What frightened you?
Gwai ~19~ Thinking you see the badger, you canter forward 5 spaces. However, it is not the badger. What was it that looked so much like a badger?
Eógyth ~16~ A gust of winter wind causes a length of canvas to blow to the ground right in front of you, spooking your horse, and he darts forward three spaces before you finally regain control of him. What did you do to regain control?
Laewyn ~6, 3, 9~ 6 - Trying to navigate the back streets you get lost, yet you manage to get back on the main streets, and your luck! You are 2 spaces ahead where you had previously been! Describe your journey.
3 - Your horse sees a nice patch of flowers and decides he is hungry. In a short canter, he moves forward five spaces! What did you do to stop him from eating the beautiful flowers?
9 - You have stopped to look for the Badger perhaps hiding among some market ware, when your horse gives a jump and a squeal, the Badger has appeared out of nowhere and bitten him! You move back 1 space to get some medicine from Star’s shop to tend to your mount while the Badger meanders off.
Ides ~17~ You hear a loud noise behind you and you urge your horse on. Advancing 2 spaces, you look back. What frightened you?
@Aerlinn, @Durien you're almost done! Don't give up now!

The angry shopkeeper was still yelling at Gwai as she finished cleaning up Brightfyr's mess. Honestly, you'd think the man had never seen horse poop before! This was Edoras, after all, and horses practically outnumbered people. Or did they? Gwai pondered that question as she remounted and turned Brightfyr in the opposite direction of the irate shopkeeper. If there were more horses than people, would they perhaps take over the world at some point? Hopefully, she concluded.
Gwai saw a flash of something small and grayish out of the corner of her eye, darting down a small alleyway. Gwai immediately kicked Brightfyr and he turned on a proverbial silver piece (haha), breaking into a gallop for a minute. Thinking better of that since they really were in a populated area, Gwai pulled him down to a canter as they dashed down the alley.
Despite being a bit older than his last badger chase, Brightfyr was quickly able to catch up with the badger. Or, more accurately, what Gwai had wishfully thought was the badger. It was an old alley cat, who hissed even though Gwai and Brightfyr were still 10 feet away. Gwai pulled Brightfyr to a stop, not wanting to get too close, especially since he had already gotten bitten today by the badger. "You should meet the shopkeeper at the Ploughman," Gwai told the alley cat. "You two would get along splendidly." Brightfyr snorted his agreement, as they turned to go back toward the main street.

Amhran jumps in her seat and urges her plow horse to a canter as what sounds like another explosion goes off behind her. It isn't for two blocks that the nature of the sound actually registers in her brain and she turns to check: sure enough, there is an old man, blowing his nose irritably into his hankie. Shaking her head at herself, Amhran sets a mental reminder to get a very stiff restorative for her nerves after the chase (but *not* at the Ploughman's Plenty), and permits herself a little optimism as she notes now she's a little closer to the race track.

Laewyn, riding Honey ButterLaewyn found herself actually moving forward after that. The crowd seemed to dissipate somehow and the occasional horn in the distance seemed to be linked with it. It seemed to be going well, and then there was a flash of black and white under Honey, and then it all went pear-shaped.
"Ahh, Honey!" she cried as the horse kicked out backward then shied. She slipped from the saddle, calming the mare as best as she could before looking for the problem. It was a bite - not a real badger bite, such as she had seen on the wild dogs who worried them in the hills, where the dog had to be slain for the vicious bite pressure of the badger's attack. This was more like a nip - a warning, but the horse's ankle still bled profusely where the teeth had broken the skin.
"I think we're done!" she told the horse in soothing tones. "Don't worry, bebe, we can wake from this badger-filled nightmare now. Let's go back to Star's shop and we'll clean that bite before it gets infected with whatever that vile creature has. Why it needed to come and taunt us like that, I do not know. Here we are, Honey. Lae's gonna make it all better, just you wait and see!"
And thus it was that they finished their race administering first aid to the poor horse who had done nothing to deserve such treatment from the ill-tempered brock.

Ducky facepalmed. His horse had decided to relieve itself at a most inopportune time. And yes, he understood that the call of Nature is strong and inevitable, but the badger was part of Nature too! Couldn't his horse have held it in anticipation?
It was a rhetorical question, not spoken aloud. He had to listen anyway to Fanny Mae, who had come out to protest Ducky's horse's, um, "littering" of her yard.
"So sorry, ma'am, so sorry, give me just a moment and I will clean it right up." he said. "You know, in Hogwarts they just use their wands to magic this stuff away." he remarked. There was no response. Ducky refrained from mentioning that this was Middle-earth and such things could not be done; it seemed not to be apropos. He grabbed a broom instead, after parking his horse along the way. He would just have to write this off as a pit stop, he supposed. May as well grab a bite to eat and a quick swig of water at the same time. Preferably after the stink left his nostrils. He hadn't smelled anything so bad since traveling down the river in a boat literally made of stinking cheese.
As soon as he was done, he nodded his head at Mrs. Mae, whooped loudly, and jumped back on his steed, spurring it (hopefully) forward again. With any luck, other riders were suffering similar setbacks, since all horses needed to make such stops. He could still catch the badger, he thought.

Finally getting that right foot in the stirrup Ides gathered her wits and looked for the badger. A large shout of excitement made her, and her horse jump. Looking back she saw an excited toddler jumping and screaming in excitement. All this screaming was annoying but the fact that it woke woke his little baby sister. Her creaming was intense to put it mildly. Spurring her horse on she got them galloping swiftly in the direction she thought the badger was.

KingODuckingham ~3~ Your horse sees a nice patch of flowers and decides he is hungry. In a short canter, he moves forward five spaces! What did you do to stop him from eating the beautiful flowers?
Amhran ~18~ You move forward 4 spaces and pull up short just as the badger darts in front of you. Looking about, you see him disappear into a shop. Where did he go?
Gwai ~15~ The badger is up ahead! As you move forward, you are suddenly cut off by another rider, only achieving 1 forward space. How do you feel?
Ides ~16~ A gust of wind causes a length of canvas to blow to the ground right in front of you, spooking your horse, and he darts forward three spaces before you finally regain control of him. What did you do to regain control?
ATTN ALL: There will be ONE more update on Sunday. At that time, everyone will be given any remaining rolls they have, and the Badger chase will end!
@Amhran you have one more roll!
Just as Amhran was about to give up and go get herself a Dr. Pepper at the nearest pub to try to forget about badgers for a while, the object of all her suffering appeared out of a drainpipe well a hundred yards ahead of her and waddled briskly down the middle of the road. "Landan!" screeched his worthy Rider, "FOLLOW THAT BADGER!"
It was a fine sight indeed as the great grey horse thundered through the market after their furry quarry, breath snorting through their nostrils and a light burning in their eyes. But before they could catch up properly the badger, perhaps sensing his imminent capture, turned and dived into a shop.
Landan slowed to a walk, and then stopped. The badger had been far enough ahead that Amhran wasn't entirely sure which one he'd entered. There was Thalionwen's cheese shop - the window graced by a row of small duck-shaped cheeses, each displayed over a plaque bearing the legend "In Memoriam" - and next to it was the new milliner's. The cheese shop seemed the most likely, but the milliner's was a little closer. She thought she'd check there first. Dismounting, she tied her horse to a post and tiptoed in. She only meant to take a peek to assure herself that the badger wasn't there, except he was. Sitting up and snuffling at his reflection in the mirror, stripey head surmounted by a truly fetching little toque with a half veil and imitation cherries. Amhran sneaked up behind him, intending to make a grab, but he saw her reflection and bolted out between her legs, knocking over a display and losing the toque but escaping with a fez, Amhran hot on his heels.
She skidded to a halt outside the door, looked both ways, and decided to see if he'd gone into the cheese shop this time.
He wouldn't get away so easily now!

Ducky urged the horse forward. He was sure they were running out of time. There was, therefore, none left to waste. He could see the hunger of the horse. Another patch of flowers (or was it the same one?), and the horse was eyeing it greedily. Ducky figured he could turn this to his advantage, but he would have to plan for how to distract the horse when they got there. A short burst of speed was no good if the horse then took a very long pause right afterwards. Especially after the recent setback.
Ducky watched, squinting, as his horse approached the flower patch. It was breaking into a full on gallop, forcing him to narrow his eyes against the wind. That was good, he thought. But the timing would have to be precise. He had saved a carrot from his own lunch break earlier, and at just the right moment, before his steed entered the flower patch, he dangled the carrot off to the horse's left side. He had timed it well, but not anticipated how quick the horse's reaction would be. Less than half the carrot came back as he whipped his arm out of reach of the horse's long mouth.
Still, it was enough to head the horse off in a new, better direction. One away from the distraction of the flower patch. They may as well have been enchanted sleep-inducing poppies for how race-ending they would have been. Ducky breathed two sighs of relief, one for the race, and other for his hand not becoming horse chow.

Talen saw a streak of black and white dart in front of him and disappear again just as quickly. He started to follow, only to find himself face to face with an assortment distinctly NOT badger-like creatures. "Ooooh no!"
Ye Olde Pet Shoppe was flanked by several birds, a number of ferrets, and a pile of puppies that stared up at the boy with big, doleful eyes. He looked between the puppies, and the badger, and the puppies again. His quarry was sniffing around the food bags and seemed rather interested in a sack marked for ferrets. One of the puppies gave a little yip and pawed at the top of its pen. He couldn't resist. Talen slid down off his horse and offered his hand to the tiny fellow who immediately leaped for it and gave it a curious nip. The badger slipped away with a mouthful of ferret food.
The boy pulled himself away from the wagging tails and wet noses with a mournful sigh and scrambled onto his mare. He felt an unusual rush of fondness for her and buried his face in her mane for a moment. "Yer beautiful too, aren't ye?" he said very quietly.
Then they turned away from Ye Olde Pet Shoppe and headed up the market street towards the end of the rows of stalls. The badger was nowhere to be seen but Talen's horse suddenly broke into a canter. He looked left and right and up before he finally looked down and saw what the horse saw--a patch of big, swaying yellow flowers. He could just make out a ladybug on one of them.
"Oh, no you don't!" he said and tugged the reigns sideways. "This isn't snack time, we've got to find that dratted badger! I'm starved too, but the sooner we catch that thing the sooner we can get some real food! I think we're almost out of time!"

Eógyth urged the sturdy, steady pony onwards, slowing occasionally to snuffle along the edges of the streets where the crowds of humans were more dispersed. Neither of them were flagging in determination, despite the confounding obstacles and apparent equal determination of the other Racers. Most of them, at least.
Out of the wild blue, an icy wind sliced down like a ghostly swirl, circling around Eógyth, who shivered with foreboding, her dark eyes darting about suspiciously, fearful for the first time since arriving in Rohan. There was a familiarity to the strange wind!
The unnatural wind ripped a goodly portion of a canvas canopy from a nearby shop, flinging it before Botheid, who implacably chose not to let it block her path, planning to simply trample across it. But when it whipped the canvas back up off the ground and around to the rear of the badger pony, slapping her rump soundly, it frightened her enough to bolt ahead while Eógyth croaked, “Aaaaiieee! Ta’ spirit of Freca be afta’ is! Hurry, ‘tis no good to dismay ‘im!”
Eógyth, realizing the pony was careening ahead in more fear than she’d ever witnessed in her, yanked back on her own inner reigns first before attempting to take back control of Botheid. She shushed and cooed and reached to pat at the wide shoulders, forcing her voice to sound assuring, keenly aware that she’d JUST issued a command to hurry. “Ba, Botheid. Ye nae wanna hurra’ right on past ta pesky beast, eh?!”

Finally, the badger was up ahead! It was about time something went right! Gwai spurred (not literally, she doesn’t use them) Brightfyr to a gallop as they dashed after the badger. Visions of fame and glory began dancing through her head. This would go down in history! Finally!
Her gloating came to an abrupt end when another rider cut in front of Brightfyr. She pulled Brightfyr to a rapid stop, as he almost sat on his haunches as he skidded, trying not to hit the other horse and rider.
“Hey!” Gwai yelled. “What do you think you’re doing?” she asked angrily. There could have been a significant accident if Brightfyr wasn’t quite so responsive. The other rider, whom Gwai did not recognized, looked at her and rolled his eyes before continuing on his way. Gwai shook her head. Some people shouldn’t be allowed on a horse. And, just to add insult to injury, the badger was long gone.

Hahah just kidding, it was all luck of course! Thank you @Shivased for conducting the race so consistently, reading our posts so keenly, and giving us an opportunity to have fun roleplaying! And thanks for the good luck too!
She was wrong. The badger *could* get away that easily. Amhran had chase him down streets and back alleyways until she was completely turned around and had no idea where she was. Or where the badger was. She went into a nearby pub and got that Dr. Pepper. As she slurped it, her ears suddenly caught the sound of cheering - it sounded like the race was over, but as long as they kept up the noise, she could follow it. She hopped back in the saddle and threaded her way through town back to the marketplace, always listening for the direction of the yells of "Eogyth! Laewyn! DUCKY!"
At last, back in the Riddermarket, where she congratulated the winners and made for the jerky platters. That sandwich was a long time ago, man.
Thank you so much, @Shivased ! This was fun.

Laewyn, not riding Honey ButterSomewhere up ahead there was a general commotion and hubbub, and Laewyn was about to duck down a side street and avoid it when someone said the chase had ended and the winners were announced. Well, winner, and some runners-up.
"We came second?" she echoed in bemusement. "How unlucky were the other chasers? We were behind the start line for most of the race! Well done, O'Duckingham!"
The following announcement regarding badger jerky wasn't something she was terribly keen on getting though. "Um, Honey, my love, I think we need to get you out of this crowd ... maybe a bit o' mash for you, eh?"
She skedaddled down a side street, escaping the crowds and the craziness.
The cheering jangled Eógyth nerves, but she gritted her teeth and forced a crooked smile, riding along the gathering Chasers, offering her grimy hand and muttering, “guut job Amhran, nice race Gwai, go ye Talen, atta girl Ides, cungrats Laewyn, huzzah Ducky, blass ya Shivased.”
Ugh, the things one has to do! But there, they all were unwinding and dismounting and eating jerky, even the badger was letting its guard down, curious as to why he suddenly was forgotten. As he turned to wander away into obscurity, Eógyth made her move and skillfully scooped up her true prize and trotted off at an unbelievably rapid pace, hooting and cackling with glee! She was joined by a second figure, bent on making it back to Dunland before the Cavalry could catch ‘em!
((OOC: Haha, thanks, this was great fun, and hilarious! Great rolls, Shivased. And I hope it’s OK to abscond with the badger
You never exactly defined his fate?
