Addhor
Basic Track
Feedback #1 – You mention Addhor's younger brother early on, but not how their relationship potentially shifted later after Addhor's injury and career change. What might have changed ?

There was actually very little time for the two brothers together, following Addhor’s injury. The elder’s bold career which had been meant to convince Domanol that a Ranger could come home safely, had rather failed, although Addhor did come home. Domanol was more aghast than afraid in the face of what had happened, and lit out with courageously ambitious intentions (and his brother’s sword) to enlist with the Rangers himself, prematurely. He had not even finished school.

He took the family sword, and told little Unalmis where he was going, so the child could relay the message once he was far enough away for his family to stop him. He had known that Orcs were out there and that Orcs were evil of course, but naïve hopes of striking back against those Orcs, and Mordor, for especially ruining his brother’s life and causing such upheaval in their family, well .. obviously his mother went after him when she realised what had happened. But the Rangers whom Domanol had gone to take up with had set out for an investigation in Harondor and neither they nor he ever came home. There was not even any real certainty he had gone with them, but it was the only lead they found. This was more the catalyst for Addhor’s self pity and dejection in the years after, blaming himself for his brother’s rash decision and presumed death. He was more devastated at Domanol’s departure, than his wife’s departure, that same year.

It was a really bad year for Addhor ! But things have vastly improved since. Still no word from Domanol though. I know what happened to him of course, but his family do not have any clue. :winkkiss:

Prompt # 2 - Who was your character's first love ? Why were they drawn to them ?

Addhor never had much interest in romance or girls for a long time, as his primary concern was being a surrogate father figure for his younger brother. Asides from his schooling, his time was taken up with helping out at home. His mother worked long hours and could not always be there for the boys, though she provided for them. The fact that Addhor married at all was completely unplanned, as was almost everything about his major romantic relationship. Alcohol was certainly an deeply enabling influence. But there may have been a want for affection he wasn't getting elsewhere, and I expect a large part of it was down to 'doing what was expected' albeit in a little less thought out manner than was wise. I'm blaming a delayed sense of finding himself grown and away from home and things all got rather carried away.

Her name was Luisa and she and some friends had recently moved to Pelargir to embark upon worthwhile careers so they could send money back to their families and potentially find themselves husbands. They all did, in a single night. Addhor and some of his friends were in Pelargir on leave from their Ranger duty in Ithilien, and they met up with the group of young women who were similarly enjoying their new found independence. A blend of alcohol, excitement and peer pressure, combined with the fact that the Rangers went for months at a time without seeing a woman, all led to a rather faster progression of romance than was very wise. Four of the young Rangers were wed within the space of one reckless, drink-fuelled weekend.

Luisa attracted Addhor’s attention foremost because she was keen to do most of the talking, which he found easier to manage with, being rather inexperienced around girls. He found her attractive, certainly, and enjoyed the fact that she claimed to do likewise for him. When his friends proposed to their female company he felt it would upset Luisa if he did not allow her to be similarly complimented. But he has reported in the long years since she left that he can hardly recall now what she looked like, and to be completely honest, it was more a dented pride than broken heart that caused him upset when she left. Their initial exploits were clumsy and embarrassing for both of them, but the alcohol masked most of this and neither one had any experience to compare their relationship to.

He was not, after thinking very honesty upon it, very surprised that she had eventually left him, and is to some degree rather relieved that he did not have to face the awkwardness of playing house with a relative stranger who might blame him for stealing her youth when she might have properly fallen in love with someone else, or had that career and independence she had been so looking forward to. Any ideallic notion that he would wake from his initially unconscious state to find her tending him sweetly, and their growing more close as a consequence, was hampered by the realities of their abruptly tiring reunion. It was less a case of mopping brows and being impressed by scars, and rather more a case of pain, insomnia, a bawling infant demanding attention for his own sake, and a general feeling of sinking very slowly in quicksand. She left without even a letter to explain, no doubt recognising that no ‘reason’ would really justify her escape. And when he later thought about it, Addhor was more annoyed that she had walked out on their son than on him. If he heard tomorrow that she had found a new relationship and children, he would only be bothered for the impact such news would have on Unalmis.

Addhor has only had one other ‘relationship’ and that was many many years later, after he had started to rebuild his life. A slow and steady pattern of nervous flirting grew up out of encounters with the local baker that he collected the woodworkers apprentice lunches from. Nelladel was very attractive as well as generously kind. She was a similarly single parent, of a similar age, and their daily brief encounters helped him to grow in practice and confidence at speaking with people, particularly women. Mostly it was a case of convenience again, though this time more sincere, albeit did not go very far or deep. They had a mutual friend in the form of Beren, and in time, Nelladel resumed her previous romance with him instead. She and Addhor are now settled as friends and he and Beren also remain so, It is early days but all three are conducting themselves very sensibly about the situation and there seems no bad feeling. Once again because it was clearly not a great romance, but more a situation which this time grew mostly out of habit. Honestly I don’t think he has yet met his first real love, unless it was the forest of Ithilien. I don't think he wants to be alone for the rest of his life, but he would certainly be more careful about romance these days.
All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost

@Someone else

Poor Addhor has definitely made a lot of mistakes early on! Hopefully things are starting to look up for him overall.

Basic #2 - It doesn't sound to me like Addhor's met his first love, either. Hopefully he's been able to cultivate a proper relationship with his son, though, during this time without a serious romantic partner.

Basic Track, Prompt #13

What is the furthest your character has ever traveled from where they were born, or where they call home? Why?

You may simply answer these questions, essay-ish style, or you are welcome to role-play it in a short scene, whichever helps you most.

Following up on Prompt #12, how did they come to believe this One Core Idea about themselves? Is this belief actually true, or is it a lie they’ve internalized?

You may simply answer these questions, essay-ish style, or you are welcome to role-play it in a short scene, whichever helps you most.

Advanced #2 for Shamara - Has she never helped someone (or something) else without expecting anything in return? It's okay if she hasn't, but it's really rare for anyone to have never done something like this.

It is not that she wouldn't do anything that can be considered good, but the need to survive has been so much ingrained in her being that she automatically calculates the benefits and advantages she would get out of anything she does for someone else. She would struggle to understand why she would have to put in effort, and even more so if it requires subjecting herself to any risk, if there is nothing for her to gain, or at least something that she would get out of it in future.

Character name: Shamara
Track: Basic
Prompt #3: What is your character's relationship like with their family? If their family is deceased/absent, who do they consider to be most like family, and why? If they have no one, is it by choice, and what was the catalyst behind that choice?

Shamara was kidnapped from her family as a baby in an attempt of revenge from some opponents and later dropped on the street when she no longer was useful. Her parents were killed during the course of this conflict, though her brother escaped and later found her by accident. It was not easy for Shamara to warm up to her brother since she believed that her family probably did not need her as the only family she knew were street urchins and thieves. Perhaps in time she would open up and return his devotion and kindness to her, but at some point he disappeared, perhaps during one of his assassin assignments.

All in all, Shamara has no proper concept of a family; the bunch of thieves that she ended up with only taught her the understanding of hierarchy and how to survive, and that is the basis from which she continues to operate in her life. When she started to work for Relic, she gave up running around with her former gang without much regret.

Due to her experiences, Shamara has no idea what it is to love, so she has not formed her own family either, always cautious and looking at men only in terms of what she can get from them. It is difficult to say what would have to happen to change her deeply rooted beliefs about life and change her towards more loving and giving, uncalculated relationships.

Basic Track Prompt 1

What prompted your character to pursue their occupation? What do they enjoy most about it? What aspects of it do they dislike?

He is currently working on regaining his former occupation, currently he is looking at joining the Lorien Guard to refresh his skills from his first life years ago in the First Age and before. He has only remembered his past life recently and has moved away from what he had been doing which was more scholarly work, it had always felt wrong to him. He is hoping that when he can meet up with some of his friends from ages ago he can perhaps get back to working with smelting and working with metals.

He enjoys working with his hands and defending those he cares about, and while he does not have enough patience to actually craft items with the metal but enjoys being able to help those that do have the patience to work with it.

Character Name: Talina
Track: Basic
Prompt: Basic #7 -What are your character's money/financial habits like? Have they ever been wealthy or poor? Have they ever experienced a drastic change in financial status?

Talina's family is not wealthy, or poor for that matter, more like middle class citizens, not rich or poor, but somewhere in between. The only change in status is when Talina's parents were kidnapped and then sold into slavery, since then Talina had to start over, so to speak, taking whatever jobs she could find, whether it be walking dogs, sewing garments for the less fortunate (or even the odd Ranger, since this is when Talina thought of becoming one to help protect any surviving family members, which included herself, from suffering the same fate as her parents). Back when she was a youngster in Pelargir, Talina didn't really worry about her future, since she was convinced that her family would always be there to protect her. This all changed when the Corsairs came, since if she wouldn't have been so timid, she might have stood up to the Corsairs and perhaps been able to save her parents, but there was also a good chance she would have also been captured and sold into slavery, so perhaps in this case, her cowardice may have saved her life (even if it left her unsure of where her life would now take her).

Character Name: Naelia
Track: Advanced
Prompt: Advanced #1 -What is the most selfish thing your character has ever done, and why? Did it hurt someone else, or were there few, if any, consequences?

Probably keeping her half-sister, Lathana, locked up, since Naelia's always found her to be a bit of a nuisance. Every time she sees someone coming up from the Pits, she fears they're trying to spring her from her imprisonment (though this has never occured). The only reason Lathana was sent to live with her half-sister in the first place after their mother was killed for taking Naelia away from the only place in Middle-earth that will ever feel like home is because she had no other family, and thought that Naelia could watch out for her. It would have been easier to either let Lathana continue to live in Southern Mirkwood or else send her to another Elven kingdom other than sending her to the kingdom of a sibling that will always resent her and caused her to become imprisoned for the rest of her born days (though Lathana is always trying to find ways to escape, but has never been successful. She always ends up getting recaptured),

Prompt: Advanced #2: What is the most truly selfless thing your character has ever done? Was it a conscious choice or an instinctual reflex? Did other people recognize it as selfless? If it happened publicly, how did it make your character feel?

Rescuing her pet dragon, Drinch, from dehydration. Though she may have had darker motives for doing so (thinking that he would come in handy in interrogations), she still saved him, since she could have easily left him to die. If Orniak would have convinced her to leave him behind, Drinch might have ended up as food or fodder for the fell beasts or some other denizen of the Dark Land, since the two of them were in the midst of some sort of a training exercise at the time and Orniak feared the little creature would slow them down, so this may have been the only time that Naelia actually felt compassion for another living creature. This may have occured when she first enlisted in Mordor's Army, since Orniak was the name of the other Orc that helped to capture Lathana when she was accused of betraying the Dark Lord (desertion, mostly, since both Naelia and Lathana were members of the Black Guard at the time).

Basic #3 for Shamara - Shamara almost sounds like she's prime material to become a sociopath.

@CHAOS

Basic #1 for Afarfin - what, an impatient elf? :googly: Afarfin sounds very interesting indeed!

@Lady of Shadow

Basic #7 for Talina - Oh Talina... if you were a child, no matter how courageous you were, you probably would not have defeated any corsairs. We all have that moment, don't we? When we realize that the people we always thought would be there cannot be. It's hard when it happens so young, though.

Advanced #1 for Naelia - being a bit of a nuisance seems like a rather lacking reason to be locked up in the Pits for eternity, lol. Was there a specific incident (or series of incidents) that caused Naelia to settle on this course of action?

Advanced #2 for Naelia - even minions have a soft spot for baby animals, it seems.

Since Naelia often shuns her Elven heritage, she resents Lathana because she reminds her of this (Naelia would rip this out of her if she could, but since she can't, dealing with Elves that accept this part of themselves is often hard for Naelia to deal with, and perhaps deep down, she kind of regrets what happened to her mother), but the one time she did feel a little sorry for the girl was when her trusted Orcish helper, Orngor, was constantly pulling on her long hair in order to get the truth out of her (which is why Naelia keeps her own hair shorter, so that if she herself were to get captured, her enemies wouldn't do the same to her). Seeing Lathana also reminds Naelia of the time when their mother took her to live with her in Northern Mirkwood against her will and she was often mistreated, so she finds mistreating her own half-sister as some kind of payback (since more than likely the Elves that mistreated Naelia were dealt with in a similar fashion as to what happened to her mother, since word would have got out once Naelia was rescued and brought back to Mordor). If Naelia's mother would have known this, she would have put a stop to it, but these "rogue" Elves, as you might call them, did these things behind her back, since even if she refused to believe that Naelia was beyond redemption, they could sense that the woman was clearly up to no good, and would burn down their kingdom in order to escape, so if they continued to torment her, maybe they could prevent this, even though they were no better than Naelia herself by their actions.

Sorry if I wasn't specific enough with that response, but some of the answers to these prompts might end up being as long as a novel if I give away too much information, though it would clear up a little bit of confusion as to what makes Naelia tick, so to speak.

Character Name: Naelia
Track: Advanced
Prompt: Advanced #3 -Who would your character die for? Who would they kill for? Are the answers for each question the same or different? Why?

Naelia would die for her kingdom, since if Mordor were to ever fall, she would rather fall with it, rather than going back to Northern Mirkwood (especially after what she experienced the last time she was there. The "rogue" Elves may be gone, but Naelia's memory of them is not, so she would probably attempt to do the same thing: burn down the kingdom in an effort to escape) and live the rest of her life as one of the "free peoples", regardless of the fact that she's part Elven.

Being a minion, Naelia has killed many, but if Orniak would have persisted that she leave Drinch behind and something would have happened to him (regardless of the fact that the only reason she wanted to rescue him was for darker purposes), she probably would have killed him, with very little remorse, since Orcs are expendable. If the Orc in question would have been Orngor that would have been a different story, since she treats him more like family rather than "hired" help. She's even a little iffy sending him on dangerous missions where he might end up getting himself killed. She'd deal with it, but her first reaction would be to punish the person responsible, even though Orcs are expendable, but Orngor is a little more important (much like Naelia herself) than the average "hired" help, so to speak.

The answers are pretty similar since Naelia would die for her kingdom, and would kill for those within that kingdom whom she thought of as family (which included her actual family like her father and any of those that are considered "expendable", such as Orngor, but she considers as family, since they have been with her since she was rescued from Northern Mirkwood).

Prompt # 2 - Who was your character's first love ? Why were they drawn to them ?

Melviriel (Fuin), a Nandor elf that grew up for the most part in Doriath She was only just over 100 when Arasoron Mordagnir found her in Brethil woods hunting for food while her father was away as part of the Marchwardens with Beleg. He in return brought Afarafin to see this 'amazing woman' he had found thinking perhaps he'd found his soul mate. However they did not make it back for another 150 years and by then she was older and wiser cooler headed, Arasoron for his part was given a piece of her mind as she did her best to ignore him while he tried to talk to her the first time, and when Afarfin saw her, he knew in the breath between heartbeats that she was his soulmate, and she seemed to know it as well. Arasoron was at a loss, but accepted that indeed Meviriel the Nandor of Doriath was not his soulmate. Afarfin loved her because while she everything dissimilar to the ladies of his family, and those of all of his friends. She was independent in a way that was not often seen in Noldor women in those years, though many knew how to fight, and speak their minds, it was not common for them to be out hunting, or foraging in woods by themselves. She also was irreverent to both himself and Arasoron, she was to him a doe of Aman springing in joy when hunter had no bow, and the hounds were in their kennels sound asleep that he and Arasoron hunted when they lived in the West before they returned to Middle-earth . To be watched as a thing of beauty wild, free, needing no one to tend her. He remembered those moments of joy when all in the world was right in Aman, and he felt that joy whenever he saw her, and still does.

She was the first woman he ever loved and the only woman he ever loved, because of the War he was not able to marry her right away, as he had responsibilities but he did see her as often as he could hoping to marry her, once they had some small measure of peace after the war. However he died in a battle while protecting Aigronding Mordagnir during the third kinslaying.

He waited over 6000 years to be reborn in Middle-earth as he had a feeling his love was not in Aman. While he was growing up, reborn he had dreams after he had turned 50 slowly remembering the woman he loved. It was the first memory he regained in full, before he remembered his name was Afarfin, for he had been going by his mother-name Miresurie.

Character Name: Windhladen Alarion
Track: Basic
Prompt #1: What prompted your character to pursue their occupation? What do they enjoy most about it? What aspects of it do they dislike?

Windhladen stopped before the doors of the Dragon Room, indecisive. Every time she came back from the Westmark it was like this; she felt the pull of the land so strongly in these quiet minutes and had to make the choice once again to climb back in the saddle. Metaphorically, of course. One didn’t ride a horse into the Dragon Room sober. The first time she stood here she had no such hesitation - she’d been filled with dreams of heroic endeavors and a desperate need to become a warrior for her own personal pursuits. With all the cunning of a teenage girl she had thought she was taking advantage of the system to learn the sorts of skills her Da had been unwilling to teach her and which she now needed to reunite her family. She had beamed with pride when she put on the uniform and strode in boldly to find out her next assignment.

A few young riders jostled past her, apologizing vaguely amid their bright laughter, and she checked her position to make room for foot traffic. This time at home, the Window Sill had been thriving, brimming with warmth and life and the rewards of harvest. She always tried to be there for the harvest to help Deryn put things in order, and every year it was harder to leave a house and farm tucked in for a cozy winter while she made her way back to Edoras. It was hard to leave, but...somehow she knew that the comforts of that home wouldn’t sustain her. Not yet, at least.

Win shook her head to bring herself out of her reverie. As hard as it was to leave the predictability and comfort of home, she couldn’t deny that it was invigorating to be back here. These doors had come to signify independence and freedom for her, and sometimes even adventure. Having her feet in the soil of the farm gave her peace for a while, but the wanderlust always came back; the cavalry helped satisfy that desire to move and to feel
needed by more than the livestock. A few more days and the uncertainty of her decision would fade again, giving way to the pattern of life here in the city. Nodding pleasantly to the guards she put on a smile and reached out to open the door, the Dragon Room welcoming her to a different kind of home.

I hope you don't mind me popping in and commenting :-) I've been reading the prompts and how people answered to them, and from the beginning, I thought that Pele's character Shamara was a bit of a sociopath. And now when I saw you mention this I was like: YES! I think so too! I'm so glad someone else saw this.

You absolutely do not have to answer all/any of the follow-up questions I present. They're mainly meant as food for thought.

Advanced #3 for Naelia - It's nice to see a glimpse into what Naelia does care for outside of herself! It seems like her Mirkwood heritage is something she really despises, though.

@CHAOS

Basic #2 for Afarfin - Oooh, tragic estranged romance! So much fun to write/read.

@Windowcel

Basic #1 for Windhladen - Aww, I love this little snippet of Windowcel's story! It's wonderful to see how being in the Cavalry has helped her find independence.

@Nessa Saelind - You're absolutely welcome to pop in with comments! It's great that someone else saw it too!

@Pele Alarion - Sounds like Shamara is starting to taking on a life of her own, then.

Prompt #3: What is your character's relationship like with their family? If their family is deceased/absent, who do they consider to be most like family, and why? If they have no one, is it by choice, and what was the catalyst behind that choice?

Afarfins first family is all in Aman, he loved, and loves (now that he remembers them) them dearly. His mother and father were kind and always encouraging to him, especially in making friends. His sisters (4), all younger than himself are calm and poised and born in Aman, they are sweet and proper ladies, skilled in weaving and dance, they Are tenders of gardens and healers. But, are not much fun for a young man like Afarfin to be around, he befriended Arasoron, a chosen brother, and often worked with his family mining gems and metals, when the Darkening of Valinor happened Arasoron chose to leave Aman, and Afarfin decided to follow his chosen brother and would not abandon him and he knew that the rest of his family was safe in Aman.

He became like a brother also to Aigronding who he had thought perhaps would stay in Aman as he did not join them on the ship that they took, which he thought for the best as he did not want to see the younger ellon come to harm. However when he arrived after crossing the Grinding Ice, Afarfin took to protecting him too like a younger brother though the Crossing had certainly caused him to mature greatly from how Afarfin knew him in Aman. It is for this chosen little brother of his that he died to protect him showing just how deeply he loved his chosen family.

His second family, is in Lothlorien, he still very much loves them though his memories have returned to him. His parents were a bit sad that they were given a reborn child he is the youngest of his current family and his older brothers always tease him that he may think he's old but he's still a child in their eyes (The oldest is 3000, the closest to him is 600 - I've honestly not fleshed out that part of his family at all beyond he's got 3 siblings) Beyond that they adore their baby brother, he loves them. When he can he visits them and tries to make sure that they are safe as while he is young of body his mind is ever present to the fact that he is much older than them, and that there is dark stirrings in the world and that if he can protect them he should.

Your feedback led nicely into my considering Basic prompt 3, @Resistance is Futile

Addhor has enjoyed more or less a good relationship with his mother, which is a good thing considering he can not remember his father. He was very proud of her decision to start over in a new place, particularly whilst pregnant and with a small child in tow at the time. The tireless struggles she had thereafter to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads were very much respected. Things were not taken for granted, and clothes, belongings were kept as well ordered as possible because it would cause difficulty to afford more needlessly. This is where a lot of Addhor’s responsibility for his younger brother Domanol entered the scene. He made sure his brother understood why it was important to take care of things and not trouble their mother with problems.

Addhor wanted to help his mother as much as he could and considered himself from rather a premature age as ‘the man of the house’. Which led to his taking charge (without being asked to) whenever his mother had to work. Sometimes he overstepped and his parent had to remind him that it was her job to worry about ‘grown up’ things, not his. There were occasional quarrels especially as Addhor grew older, when his mother would not let her eldest son leave school early to get a job to help out, and when he made decisions about raising Domanol and telling him /teaching him things which their mother hadn’t really had any say in/on. He used to tell his brother things about his ‘memories’ of their father for example; which were often fabricated in an effort to console or reach Domanol what he needed to know. Whereas their mother became too upset over the subject of her late husband to ever discuss it, the subject became something that the two boys shared privately and held their bond all the closer.

When he entered the Rangers and married, it was Addhor’s mother Odessa, who duly took Luisa in and helped her through the birth of their son, while Addhor was abroad on patrol. Odessa and Luisa did not really ever get along, mostly because of their very diverging personalities. They fell out often over what was the best way to raise Unalmis, with Odessa claiming that Luisa was incapable and Luisa claiming that Odessa was interfering. Often when he did come home, Addhor was expected to take sides between the two women, and instead he favoured spending his free time with Domanol, who was ever excited to hear the tales of life in Ithilien, etc. His wife was a relative stranger, his mother was an exhausted nag, and his brother thought he was a hero. It is no surprise that he favoured his brother’s company.

After Addhor’s injury however, with Luisa having left and Domanol as well having left, both in a short time span, the injured (now-former) Ranger was initially unable to take care of his son, physically and mentally both. Odessa was more than willing to step in, both to finally be able to baby her son, who had always seemed so independent, and also to distract and console herself, in the apparent loss of her younger son abroad. So as Addhor blamed himself for being the cause of Domanol’s departure and bemoaned what future he could now provide for his son, he began to withdraw from efforts to fight his mother for control of his unhappy household. An early setback in his recovery led to an initial below the knee amputation being re-amputated higher up the limb after an infection, which increased the amount of time he was basically incapable to contribute much to the family. Odessa basically took over the household as both carer and childminder, giving up her job as a housekeeper in order to keep her own house afloat. Luckily they had Addhor’s military pension/payout to help them get by.

Years did improve the situation, as the pain of their losses and the injury’s recovery both began to abate some, Addhor learned to walk on his crutch, and was encouraged by his friend Beren to try a wooden leg that he had crafted as a gift. But it was the crutch which was the more oft used, and the ‘daily exercise’ became a daily walk to the nearest inn, where Addhor was offered free drinks by those willing to recognise and celebrate a veteran of their military. The alcohol lowered his inhibitions and he told his tales of adventure and the pride of Gondor, serving the nation the only way he thought he now could, with propaganda. Until the captivated audience reminded him of his once enthralled younger brother. Then he would grow morose and be done with the night’s activity. Unalmis when he was old enough used to sometimes accompany his father to the inn, sitting at the bar drinking a glass of water and served toast by the kind barmaid. He would enjoy the stories which were his main glimpse of who his father might actually be, then help Addhor home when the bravado had diminished and the haze had taken over. And so it carried on for several years, with Odessa eventually going back to work herself in an effort to force Addhor back into the responsible man around the house. Instead Unalmis simply spent more and more time outdoors and away with friends, to avoid the fact that his father slept days away and drank the nights away. The boy fortunately had some very good friends, who would insist he stay for supper, or overnight, as required, so that Unalmis was not left wanting.

The breaking point came when Unalmis met a stranger who claimed to have seen someone resembling Domanol, wielding the family’s lost sword. And the youth, raised on tales of excitement, not to mention keen to resurrect his family and ‘make things right’, set off with the stranger to bring his errant Uncle home. The stranger though, had lied. He was a man who had fallen fowl of Domanol abroad and come to wreak his revenge by using his foe’s family. When a pair of Swan Knights who had uncovered the Umbarian Stranger’s nefarious deeds came to Addhor, in pursuit of their quarry, the agitated father realised just what danger his foolhardy son had gotten mixed up in. In an unexpected and rather unwise move on Addhor’s part, he decided to accompany the Swan Knights in hopes of bringing down their mutual enemy and bringing his son home. He was not prepared to lose Unalmis like he had lost Domanol. So even if it killed him, he was going to play what small part he could to help. It is in fact amazing that the ridiculous expedition didn’t see an end to him, but being a part of something life or death .. the mission did begin to re-build the foundations of thinking, planning, overcoming obstacles ..

Without rehashing the specific details of that lengthy quest, Unalmis was very narrowly rescued from being sacrificed to a Blood Temple/Sauronic occultist in Umbar. He also realised that Domanol was still alive out there, so that there was hope he might one day return. Given how close he had come to losing his son, Addhor made a renewed attempt to impress some sense into the youth. He realised that Nal was now of an age that his father could not stop him heading out into the world, but he could try to ensure that the boy was better prepared to do so. That became his new goal, and it got him out of bed in the morning, and it ensured he was too tired to go out drinking at night. He entered talks with his friends and family about assisting in Nal's training and in entering his own second-choice career. When Unalmis enlisted with the Rangers, the lifestyle and experience and knowhow he could imbue on his son brought the two very close together.

Now that Unalmis has officially enlisted and Addhor is back on his own two feet, so to speak, the two have a very good relationship. Odessa died during the war of the ring, so they are all they have left for each other now. Which is not to say that Unalmis is always sensible now, nor that Addhor allows him to be as independent as he ought. But they are doing their best and their relationship has never been stronger. And so we are now in the improved years. Life is already far better for Addhor than perhaps it even was before. He knows what is important to him now, and his son is at the top of that list. Nal actually has a father paying him attention these days so while he moans about this when it means he is denied or forbidden things, he is also secretly delighted .. that his father cares enough to deny or forbid him things which might prove ill in the long run.

A small group of friends who have stuck by the family throughout their years of hardship are still present, finding it far more easy to co-operate with Addhor now that he is sober and being reasonable. Links remain with the Swan Knights who are friends of the family, and overall a good tightknit support group now surrounds the father and son, so that they are not as alone as they once each believed themselves to be. Ending this answer on a happier note than the last time, thankfully.

Advanced #2 for Pele - Selflessness can certainly lend itself to self-erasure as well, which seems to be what Pele is doing mostly. However, with this prompt, we're looking more for one particular incident than a lifestyle. Has there ever been a moment where, at Pele's own potential detriment or harm, she's put someone else first, without knowing what the outcome might be?

One of the incidents was in battle when Pele saw that youngster Cadil was failing to do his part and would not be able to avoid a sword aimed at him that would more than likely cut his head off. Pele stepped in to deflect the enemy's weapon. She was quite aware though that by doing that she left herself open to the attacks for a moment, yet she did not allow the thought of letting the youth die if as long as she could prevent it. Cadil escaped unscathed from that particular encounter, but Pele got struck by a spear - luckily only a dent in the armour and a painful bruise.

Character name: Pele Alarion
Track: Advanced
Prompt #3: Who would your character die for? Who would they kill for? Are the answers for each question the same or different? Why?

As a soldier Pele is very well aware that it might mean that at some point she might lose her life in battle, so she is committed to Gondor and its people and would die for them if necessary. The same way she would give her life for her friends, if need be. Yet Pele usually is not reckless and would not throw her life away needlessly, as she believes that she might be more useful to people she loves if she is alive.
She is slow to take a life of any living creature, except maybe orcs, and if possible she would do everything else first. Yet, she would kill if in battle, or if there is danger to the life of the people she loves or to herself, that is, in situations that are 'kill or get killed' and that do not allow for any other alternative options.

Prompt #4 - Name 3 items your character always carries with them: 1 sentimental, 1 practical, 1 luxury
Briefly explain each item, or why there are no items your character carries. It's okay of an item meets multiple criteria (practical and sentimental, for example), but do try to have at least two items you describe, and they should not include basic clothing/supplies if at all possible. (Exceptions can be made for, say, the last piece of clothing someone was gifted by a parent/lover/etc. before that person died, especially if it was handmade.)

Addhor isn’t much for items that are kept about his person always, although this was not always the case. I would have said that his sentimental item was previously the family sword, an heirloom of his house, which has been passed down for generations. He did carry this with him because it was his primary weapon in the military capacity – thus it could also count as ‘practical’. However, Domanol seized this blade when he ran off to avenge Addhor’s misfortune. Similarly I might have said the small bone-handled knife which he carried with him everywhere as a Ranger. It was sort of a rough, well used but general for many purposes type tool so could have served here as both/either the sentimental/practical item. But given his son’s recent enlistment in the Rangers, Addhor has gifted this to Unalmis (in lieu of the lost sword) and so doesn’t carry it himself any more.

Luxury is not exactly something I associate Addhor with really, but I imagine that perhaps the wooden leg is one of the most luxurious items he always has on his person. Technically, given it’s function it could count for the practical item he can not do without as he uses it to walk. It is carven lebethron wood and was a very generous gift from his friend Beren, as that particular wood is only found in Ithilien and the degree of detailed work on it both further inspired his later career change and also makes it extremely expensive as a commodity. It makes his life easier to be able to walk with this, rather than with a crutch because the ‘support limb’ affords some level of looking like everybody else and better mobility around the city, stairs aside ! But that said, when he goes walking in the forest he deliberately takes the crutch to lean on rather than the wooden leg, because the latter makes it all too easy to trip over the natural environment. And if he wishes to climb or sit on any level, then having just the crutch can serve as both a weapon and can be discarded at need. It allows him to be more flexible which is an advantage in the more wild terrain. City paving stones do not require such consideration.

Prompt #5 - Does your character(s) have any pets/animal companions? How did they acquire them? What do they look like ?

This is a fairly easy question to answer, because no. Aside from upon the farm which he left at aged three, he has never really known/had any animal companions. Growing up in a city negates much need for this sort of company and even a dog or cat would have added to unnecessary expense when he was young, and would serve as a tripping hazard now for him.

Horses were generally lesser used by Rangers of Ithilien than by the general army of Gondor, because the Ranger focus is on sneaky guerrilla attacks, and horses could compromise tracks they’re reading, or even give away their position whilst camouflaged etc in the trees. Although Addhor would presumably have learnt the basics of how to ride, as part of his general military training. It might actually be an interesting lead to follow if he were to try and recapture some element of fighting prowess from horseback, where his shorter limb would not disadvantage him so much. Also it would be a benefit in travelling long distances now that walking might on certain circumstances prove more tiring. So that is something for me to think more upon the logistics/possibilities of. Thanks @Taethowen !

Prompt #6 - Is your character known by any nicknames or pseudonyms ? What is the origin of them ?

Addhor is in itself his ‘nickname’, as his full name given at birth was Aladdhor. This because his father was called Alescan, but that same father was frequently termed as ‘Al’ by his beloved wife; Odessa consequently dropped the Al part of Addhor’s name when he was still very young. She did not want to become emotional at the reminder of her late husband. Very few people actually even know that Addhor is only a nickname. I doubt even Domanol his brother ever heard his brother’s full name used. I imagine it as only ever being relevant for official documentation these days, etc.

Their ’family name’ is Raxelilta, which is less so a surname, and rather more a title attributed to those of their line who wield one of the dwarven-made twin swords, ‘Riot’ and ‘Reaper’, which herald back to the First Age. Admittedly, Domanol took ‘Reaper’ after Addhor ended his service in Ithilien, and neither he nor the sword have been seen in Gondor since, while another relative branch of the family settled in Arnor rather than Gondor, and still bear the sister sword ‘Riot’. Addhor and his son both still retain their ‘family’ name of Raxelilta however, as a testament to their right to bear the sword ‘Reaper’, should it ever be reclaimed/recovered. The name Raxelilta is derived from an ancient translation of ‘dancing with danger’, as was their ancestors’ tradition and legend during the Wars of Beleriand. I blame the AOA rpg (on old plaza) for this one.

If your character were to describe themselves with one word, what word would they choose, and why?

I know this one may be difficult, and it may take you some time. And for some of you, you may not be able to accomplish this. But do think about it. It can give you insight into how your characters truly see themselves.

You may simply answer these questions, essay-ish style, or you are welcome to role-play it in a short scene, whichever helps you most.

Looking forward to the future, what do they want from life? What are they willing to do to get it?

This is similar to Advanced Prompt #6, but I’d like you to look at it from a different perspective. You’ve explored your character a lot more now, and possibly have further insights into the wants/desires that they may not even be aware of yet. Instead of a singular thing that they want in a moment, this is looking forward to what they want from life. Who they want to be/become.

You may simply answer these questions, essay-ish style, or you are welcome to role-play it in a short scene, whichever helps you most.

SInce Gondor is in the fourth age, I may have to create a new character for that time period, since Talina's more in the third age (which is why I signed up to bring her into a raid in Mordor. She's fighting for the freedom of her kingdom or another of the free lands, whereas minions like Naelia are just trying to wreak havoc, so to speak). Hopefully Talina and Naelia never meet, since Talina might remind Naelia of Lathana, in some ways.

Continuing on with Talina...

Character Name: Talina
Track: Basic
Prompt Basic #8 -What is your character's favorite memory? Drawing from that memory, what are some of their other favorite things?

Talina's favorite memory is when her mother gave her the journal for her birthday just prior to the raid of Pelargir by the Corsairs. Since Talina is a little on the shy side and her emotions can often overwhelm her, she likes to write them down so that she can better explain to people what she's thinking or feeling at any particular moment, especially moments of tragedy like the enslaving of her parents. During the raid of Pelargir for example, Talina had this journal with her and accidentally dropped it in her attempt to hide from the Corsairs (and suffering a similar fate to that of her parents). Wanting to go back for it, a mother of another child about Freya's age saw her and rescued her just moments before one of the Corsairs would have either captured or killed her. As the mother was rescuing Talina, her daughter went and retrieved the journal and gave it back to Talina when all three were out of harm's way. Because of this kindness, this family is almost like a surrogate family (they often looked after Talina until she was old enough to train to become "one of them Rangers" as Butterbur would put it, and may have some connection to Talina's family, like a previous caretaker or what not when Talina's family had other matters to deal with when Talina was still a toddler).

I'll have to go back to Naelia for this one:

Character Name: Naelia
Track: Basic
Prompt Basic #9 -Who does your character dislike the most? Why?

Naelia really dislikes her half-sister, Lathana, probably because she's an Elf, and Naelia often tries to shun this part of her heritage, and Lathana might remind her of what she might be like if she were to embrace this part of herself. "And end up like Lathana? No thank you. I would much rather jump into Mount Doom or face those deadly Murder Hornets that attacked Drinch!" is how she might respond to the question of why she just didn't try to get along with the Elves of Northern Mirkwood instead of going back to Mordor to continue to follow in her father's footsteps.

Continuing on with Naelia (since Basic #10 doesn't apply to Talina or Naelia)...

Character Name: Naelia
Track: Advanced
Prompt Advanced #4 -Describe two of your character's deepest fears:
1 rational (plausible: such as a fear of fire after having been trapped in a burning house or witnessing a fire where someone died, etc.)
1 irrational (such as a phobia with no known event that triggered it)

1 rational fear:

Probably facing the Murder Hornets that may have harmed her pet dragon, Drinch, when she first came across him dehydrated near the Sea of Nurnen. Drinch had many bites on his body that looked like he was stung multiple times that were swollen to almost twice their size, so the young dragon may have been allergic to whatever kind of poison these hornets possess. SInce Drinch was near death, Naelia at the time feared that the same thing might happen to her, and although Drinch may have been allergic to their poison, she wasn't sure it she was, so she vowed to keep her distance from them if she ever came across them (since it would be a horrible way to be taken out, since although she would like to die fighting, but not by creatures that are much smaller than herself, that would almost be an insult).

Naelia doesn't really have any irrational fears that she's aware of. Sure, she fears what may happen to her if Mordor were to ever fall, but that's more of a survival instinct than an irrational fear. Lathana's irrational fear would probably be capture and torture, for obvious reasons (she's not a "true" minion, for starters, she's just putting up with life as one until she can figure out a way to escape and return to Northern Mirkwood). Naelia may have felt sorry for Lathana when her Orcish helper, Orngor, constantly pulled her long hair to get the truth out of her, but that was only because she didn't want her enemies to do the same thing to her, since she imagined it would be like somebody pulling Drinch's tail, for example (not that he would let anyone do that, but you get my point).

Naelia has often had to deal with Murder Hornets every time she falls into a trap when hunting down thieves in Mordor, and has gotten bitten on occasion (luckily, she isn't allergic to their poison, such as Drinch is), but is often reminded of what happened to Drinch when she encounters them, so she tries her hardest not to be overwhelmed by them, such as he was (though he was quite young at the time).

So depending on which life it is depends on what he would carry. In the first age is sentimental item would be a lock of Melviriels hair, because he was a romantic fool and since Melviriel previously had the embroidary skills of a small child her making him a kerchief or anything of that sort was right out of the question and what she was good at was hunting and cooking and cooking did not last long and he was not about to carry the bones of a spruce grouse about.
His practical item would be his sword, he never went anywhere without it, it is a longsword with a fullered blade with the inscription on it to watch over the ones you love. It had an eagles head always facing left while in his right hand and a blue gem in the pommel grasped in an eagle claw.

His luxury item, most would not consider it a luxury item but a standard piece of equipment when one was traveling, but Afarfin had the motto of his familly engrained on his brain that having a bedroll or pillow which Arasoron his friend basically insisted he always carry would be the full definition of luxury in the first age.

THIRD age Afarfin
He doesn't have anything overly sentimental that he carries with him yet in the third age - but he will likely get himself a new lock of Melviriels hair (Fuins) he just hasn't managed to actually find her run into her yet.

Practical - At the moment he carries a sword, it is a long sword but it is not his sword, that blade is in the a mausoleum for Arasoron on Aigrondings land he is not terribly fond of the current sword so would very much like his back.

Luxury item waiting in the halls of Mandos taught him a fair bit, and now his luxury item that he doesn't leave home without (though it does not last terribly long) is some good cooked fowl to nibble on while he travels as it reminds him of the first meal that Melviriel made for him. His other luxury item is a very nice soft pillow and bed roll. Not just a standard basic one but extra soft and warm, because comfort especially when one is not at war is not a bad thing he has learned.

Prompt #3: Who would your character die for? Who would they kill for? Are the answers for each question the same or different? Why?

Shamara is not attached to anyone so much as to die for them; and she would apply all her weapons skills and slyness to keep herself alive. She is even not above swearing allegiance only to break it if it did not align with her priorities.

Killing though is another matter, she could kill if anyone endangered her life, or came between her and some sort of important target or goal she has set her sights on. She might also kill if ordered so by Relic, as she would consider it her job.

Again, the way Shamara values her own life and that of the others is very much related to how she had grown up learning that she had had to do whatever it takes to survive and to reach a level where she could enjoy the life. This far this view of life had proved successful to her, so she sees no need to change anything.

Promt #5 Does your character(s) have any pets/animal companions? How did they acquire them? What do they look like?

In Aman he had hunting hounds and a horse, however he left them there with his family as they did not leave the shores to follow Feanor. He has not overly had any pet or companion since then, he's had mounts but nothing he would ahve called a pet or companion.

In his reborn form he has not had any pets or mounts either he has formed any exceptionally close bond to, though that will likely change over the next few 'decades' of his life as he settles into life with Fuin and his friend Aigronding - Fuin will undoubtedly make sure he has a decent steed to at least keep up with her own and possibly a hound remembering how much he talked about hunting in Aman.

Prompt #4: Name 3 items your character always carries with them:
1 sentimental
1 practical
1 luxury

Sentimental: since her own wedding ring was lost during her captivity along with any other possessions she had on her, upon her return Pele went through the few items that she still had from Maldir and had his ring placed on a fine silver chain that she now always carried around her neck not as much as piece of jewelry but as a way to remember him.

Practical: a standard issue Ranger dagger. This is something she keeps with her both as the means of self-defense and a tool at need; the times when she doesn't carry it with her are very few, as she'd try to conceal it on her even when wearing a dress.

Luxury: none. Pele firmly believes that there's no need to carry fancy things with her to tempt any thieves with it, nor does she like to appear flashy and stand out only because she has some thing or other that is considered of extremely high value and luxurious.

@Fuin Elda

Afarafin/Miresurie

Basic #3 - Afarfin definitely seems to feel a little pulled between his past family and his current family. Is he aware that his (new) parents were hesitant about being a reborn child? Did they knew before he did? If they didn't know, did learning about it shift their already-established relationships?

Basic #4 - Hopefully he'll be able to get his sword back!

Basic #5 - decent steeds seem to be very important in Middle Earth, for sure!

@Ercassie

Addhor

Basic #3 - Oh Addhor. So much trauma to unpack and heal from. It's good that he and Unalmis are making an effort in their relationship, and that they've found support around them. Does Addhor feel that he learned anything through his failed relationship with Luisa?

Basic #4 - A practical item can also be a luxury, for certain! Sometimes when the two are combined is what makes them truly valuable to a person.

Basic #5 - He should definitely consider learning how to fight on horseback, if he's determined to remain a fighter in some capacity!

Basic #6 - LOL, re:blaming the AoA RPG.

@Pele Alarion

Pele

Advanced #2 - Much better! Through this incident, rather than Pele's self-erasure, we get a chance to see her sense of honor--that she couldn't let Cadil die of she could prevent it. Even if, as a soldier, the decision itself might seem slightly reckless.

Advanced #3 - Hopefully Pele will learn that she deserves to be alive for more than just being useful.

Advanced #4 - Oooh, someone or something is going to have to come along and help Pele remember (or maybe even learn in the first place) that luxury is not taboo. And that it doesn't always have to be flashy or high value.

Shamara

Advanced #3 - Definitely a sociopath, lol!

@Lady of Shadow

Talina

Basic #8 - Does Talina still continue the habit of journaling?

Naelia

Basic #9 - Forgive me, I don't recall if I've asked this before, but is there something specific that makes Naelia despies elves so much? This seems a little more than 'minion' vs non-minion.

Advanced #4 - hornets are such a universal fear it seems!

Talina

Basic #8 - Does Talina still continue the habit of journaling?

Whenever she has free time, Talina does like to write in her journal, as a way to collect her thoughts, so to speak. It also reminds her of how close she was to her parents, and if she knew that they were simply captured and turned into slaves, she would probably try to come up with some way to try and rescue them, and this kind of plan would require her to have some kind of "battle plan" on how to accomplish this, which is where writing this down in her journal first might come in handy (though she would probably want more details on how her parents were captured first, to see if a "rescue plan" was even worth risking in the first place).

Naelia

Basic #9 - Forgive me, I don't recall if I've asked this before, but is there something specific that makes Naelia despies elves so much? This seems a little more than 'minion' vs non-minion.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this earlier, but the reason that Naelia despises Elves so much is because she was often mistreated by what she calls "rogue" Elves in Mirkwood when she was forced to live with them against her will when her mother tried to rescue her. She wasn't trying to take her away from her father, but to teach her more about her Elven heritage, since then maybe she could decide for herself if she wanted to come live with her mother rather than her father (Naelia was taken away too soon after she was born, so she didn't have much choice in the matter. It seemed that her father had more darker designs for her when he realized she resembled more of a Black Numenorean than an Elf, which is what he was planning all along when he "rewarded" her mother with her birth as "punishment" for constantly trespassing on their lands to see what they were up to). The reason these Elves often mistreated her was to hopefully ridicule her enough that her mother would feel sorry for her and take her back to where she belonged (which was not in Northern Mirkwood, but in the Dark Tower of Mordor, where she was believed to have been conceived, though the fortress of Dol Guldur in Southern Mirkwood was another possibility). What none of them realized was that Naelia wasn't alone when she was scouting near their lands when she got captured, and word got back to the Dark Tower that she had been kidnapped by her very own mother. Mordor didn't respond well, and after Naelia's rescue (which is where she first met her band of rebels, where Lathana would later become a member, but end up regretting it) her mother and these "rogue" Elves were dealt with (Naelia was already back in Mordor before this happened, so she didn't witness what happened to her mother, only heard it mentioned briefly afterwards so she didn't have enough details to be traumatized over the loss of a parent she didn't know that well to begin with). Though these Elves are long gone, Naelia often fears this might happen again, so she feels that making their lives a living hell (which includes her very own half-sister) will prevent this from happening, since she would rather die than go back and live with her mother's kin.

I know it may not be required to answer these extra questions, but I like to try, in order to both clear up a little bit of confusion and to challenge myself.
