Recently the Tolkien Estate website was relaunched.

New website includes:
I'm not sure I recognize all of the paintings from J.R.R.Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator but I also do not have a perfect memory of that book, this one of Mordor in particular I don't recognize and a quick look through Artist and Illustrator and I couldn't find it.

Yes! I saw this on google a few hours before you posted this in my news feed and absolutely fell in love with the first illustration on this page but honestly all of the art is gorgeous.

I'm always impressed with how many talents Tolkien seemed to have. Not only was he a renowned academic in his field he also wrote incredible prose, spoke many languages, wrote beautiful verse, sketched and painted, invented languages, drew maps, invented an entire script/caligraphy. Reading through the Nature of Middle-earth he was also quite good at maths (at least w.r.t time computation) in an era long before the ubiquity of calculators.

The picture of Mordor, @Romeran, can be found in the Illustrated De Luxe Edition of The Lord of The Rings. A Christmas present from my love. I was very happy! :grin: Here are some photos.

The box it came in is quite interesting in itself.

@Drifa thanks for that!

I have the Alan Lee illustrated version of the lord of the rings (although I've somehow lost the dust jacket for the Fellowship) but not this version which looks like it contains illustrations from Tolkien! Thanks for sharing.

I got this copy as well. I've barely opened it I'll admit. I've learned at everything Ind carefully put it back in its box. I will undoubtedly destroy my Alan Lee illustrated version long before this copy ever comes out of its box

I agree with keeping it safe. I first opened it when I received it. And now, I have taken it out of the box a second time. I am meticulous when I do so. Notice I didn't open the maps or the package with the Leaves from the Book of Mazarbul. :wink:

I did very very gently open those (I took a video of me opening them) that eventually I'll upload somewhere so peeps on here can see the maps and the leaves from the Book of Mazarbul.
