Six Quotations of Separation

Inspired by @Silky Gooseness who recalled a thread from OP called “6 degrees of separENTation” which I couldn’t find in the archive but which sounds like it might have gone something like this.

The idea is to take two proposed characters and string together a sequence of quotations where two characters interact with each other where each quotation contains one character from the previous quotation and which eventually connect the two proposed characters. Similar to six degrees of Kevin Bacon the idea is to do it in 6 steps or fewer.

Example

Proposed Characters: Túrin Turambar and Tom Bombadil

1. Túrin speaks with Meilan

“Then Túrin said: ‘Beren my kinsman did more.’
‘Beren, and Lúthien,’ said Melian. ‘But you are over-bold to speak so to the father of Lúthien. Not so high is your destiny, I think, Túrin son of Morwen’”
(The Unfinished Tales, The Tale of the Children of Húrin)

2. Melian speaks with Galadriel

“Then Galadriel spoke to Melian of the Silmarils, and of the slaying of King Finwë at Formenos: but still she said no word of the Oath, nor of the Kinslaying, nor of the burning of the ships at Losgar. But Melian said: 'Now much you tell me, and yet more I perceive. A darkness you would cast over the long road from Tirion, but I see evil there, which Thingol should learn for his guidance.'”(The Silmarillion, Of the Noldor in Beleriand)

3. Galadriel speaks with Frodo

“With water from the stream Galadriel filled the basin to the brim, and breathed on it, and when the water was still again she spoke. ‘Here is the Mirror of Galadriel,’ she said. ‘I have brought you here so that you may look in it, if you will.’ The air was very still, and the dell was dark, and the Elf-lady beside him was tall and pale. ‘What shall we look for, and what shall we see?’ asked Frodo, filled with awe.” (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Mirror of Galadriel)

4. Frodo speaks with Tom Bombadil

“‘Help!’ cried Frodo and Sam running towards him with their hands stretched out. ‘Whoa! Whoa! steady there!’ cried the old man, holding up one hand, and they stopped short, as if they had been struck stiff. ‘Now, my little fellows, where be you a-going to, puffing like a bellows? What's the matter here then? Do you know who I am? I'm Tom Bombadil. Tell me what's your trouble! Tom's in a hurry now. Don't you crush my lilies!’” (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Old Forest)

Rules
  1. The two proposed characters must be connected by a sequence of at most six quotations starting with one of the characters and ending with the other.
  2. Each quotation must contain one of the characters from the previous quotation (or in the case of the first quotation one of the proposed characters) and must have two characters interacting directly in some way (e.g. talking, fighting, etc.) or a statement connecting them*
  3. The first person to match the two proposed characters in six quotations or fewer proposes the next pair and can do so immediately without need for verification.
  4. Proposed characters must either feature directly in a narrative or be referred to in one. So characters who only exist in genealogical tables for example are ineligible.
  5. All of the Middle-earth books containing writings by Tolkien are fair game (E.g. HoME, Fall of Gondolin, Nature of M-e. etc. )
  6. To score your posts start with 10 points and subtract 1 for each quotation used and add back 1 for each quotation which involves direct dialog or interaction between the two characters.
*e.g. Túrin refers to Beren in the first quotation of the example.

In my example above the score would be 10 - 4 + 4 = 10. So that you’re not punished for additional links as long as they are direct interactions. I will periodically update a list of the top total scores in the OP.

High Scores
@Boromir88 10
@Eldy Dunami 10
@Romeran 10

N.B. I'll kick off the first two characters in the next post.

This looks interesting, let's see if I've got this right. (Please correct anything that is wrong!)

1. Smaug speaks to Bilbo
"Yes, it is rare and wonderful, indeed," said Smaug absurdly pleased. He did not know the hobbit had already caught a glimpse of his peculiar under-covering on his previous visit, and was itching for a closer view for reasons of his own. The dragon rolled over. "Look!" he said. "What do you say to that?"
"Dazzingly marvellous! Perfect! Flawless! Staggering!" exclaimed Bilbo aloud, but what he thought inside was: "Old fool! Why, there is a large patch in the hollow of his left breast as bare as a snail out of its shell!" (The Hobbit: Inside Information)

2. Bilbo speaks to Aragorn:
"The Dunadan," said Bilbo. "He is often called that here. But I thought you knew enough Elvish at least to know dun-adan: Man of the West, Numenorean. But this is not the time for lessons!" He turned to Strider. "Where have you been, my friend? Why weren't you at the feast? The Lady Arwen was there."
Strider looked down at Bilbo gravely, "I know," he said. "But often I must put mirth aside. Elladan and Elrohir have returned out of the Wild unlooked-for, and they had tidings that I wished to hear at once." (The Fellowship of the Ring: Many Meetings)

3. Aragorn speaks to Prince Imrahil:
"No," said Aragorn. "But I deem the time unripe; and I have no mind for strife except with our Enemy and his servants."
And the Prince Imrahil said: "Your words, lord, are wise, if one who is a kinsman of the Lord Denethor may counsel you in this matter. He is strong-willed and proud, but old; and his mood has been strange since his son was stricken down. Yet I would not have you remain like a beggar at the door." (The Return of the King: The Houses of Healing)

Score: 10-3+3 = 10

Promising concept for a game!

1. Ted Sandyman speaks to Sam

‘Queer things you do hear these days, to be sure,’ said Sam.
‘Ah,’ said Ted, ‘you do, if you listen. But I can hear fireside- tales and children’s stories at home, if I want to.’
‘No doubt you can,’ retorted Sam, ‘and I daresay there’s more truth in some of them than you reckon. Who invented the stories anyway? Take dragons now.’

2. Sam speaks to Bilbo (well, Bilbo to Sam)
In the evening they went to say good-bye to Bilbo. ‘Well, if you must go, you must,’ he said. ‘I am sorry. I shall miss you. It is nice just to know that you are about the place. But I am getting very sleepy.’ Then he gave Frodo his mithril-coat and Sting, forgetting that he had already done so; and he gave him also three books of lore that he had made at various times, written in his spidery hand, and labelled on their red backs: Translations from the Elvish, by B.B.
To Sam he gave a little bag of gold. ‘Almost the last drop of the Smaug vintage,’ he said. ‘May come in useful, if you think of getting married, Sam.’ Sam blushed.

3. Bilbo speaks to Thranduil
‘In what way have I earned such a gift, O hobbit?’ said the king.
‘Well, er, I thought, don't you know,’ said Bilbo rather confused, ‘that, er, some little return should be made for your, er, hospitality. I mean even a burglar has his feelings. I have drunk much of your wine and eaten much of your bread.’
‘I will take your gift, O Bilbo the Magnificent!’ said the king gravely.

Score: 10 - 3 + 3 = 10

Since Romeran put the entire legendarium on the table in terms of where people can/have to look to find character interactions, and since people can deduct quotations that feature interaction without direct dialogue...

1. Finrod speaks with Andreth:
Morgoth's Ring, Athrabeth Finrod Ah Andreth wrote: 'Then are you content here?' said Finrod.
'Content?' said Andreth. 'No heart of Man is content. All passing and dying is a grief to it; but if the withering is less soon then that is some amendment, a little lifting of the Shadow.'
2. Finrod Felagund fights Sauron
The Silmarillion, Of Beren and Luthien wrote: Thus befell the contest of Sauron and Felagund which is renowned. For Felagund strove with Sauron in songs of power, and the power of the King was very great; but Sauron had the mastery, as is told in the Lay of Leithian
3. Sauron speaks to Ar-Pharazôn
The Silmarillion, The Downfall of Númenor wrote: And Ar-Pharazôn said: 'Who is the Lord of the Darkness?'
Then behind locked doors Sauron spoke to the King, and he lied, saying: 'It is he whose name is not now spoken; for the Valar have deceived you concerning him, putting forward the name of Eru, a phantom devised in the folly of their hearts, seeking to enchain Men in servitude to themselves. For they are the oracle of this Eru, which speaks only what they will. But he that is their master shall yet prevail, and he will deliver you from this phantom; and his name is Melkor, Lord of All, Giver of Freedom, and he shall make you stronger than they.'

Score: 10 - 3 + 3 = 10 (Finrod fighting Sauron counts as a direct interaction even if it's not speech as in rule 2)

An interesting one @Eldy Dunami !
