Unfinished Tales refers to Midsummer as a great and holy day in Numenor: Erulaitalë (Quenya for 'Praise of Eru') (UT: 166).
Erulaitalë was also linked to the argicultural calendar; at Erulaitalë, when all things were growing, the King led praise.
The Númenórean calendar was continued by the Dúnedain of both Arnor and Gondor, and Aragorn Elessar introduced the New Reckoning after taking the Kingship - which was a "return to the Kings’ Reckoning adapted to fit a spring-beginning as in the Eldarin loa (LotR III: 390).” Erulaitalë or Midsummer would likely fall on the first day of Cerimë. Although there is no direct evidence, it would seem that on this day there would be feasting and rest from work.

The Pelennor offered the perfect scene for the Midsummer celebration. The King had commissioned Alf and Hildy from the popular 'the Wayfarer's Inn' to make the arrangements and organize the affair, while he himself sponsored it.
It had been impossible for Hildy to prepare all the necessary food herself, of course - but she had tasted and judged samples from all the cooks and suppliers involved. Those who did not live up to her personal standards, were not hired. There were breads and pastries, hot meats and cold vegetables, fruits, cheeses and sweets.
Alf had overseen the provision of drinks, although the selection is more limited than one would be accustomed to at the Wayfarer's: there are ales and wines and water, and a more limited supply of juices - but nothing stronger than wine, and no hot beverages for the sake of keeping things manageable.
Long tables have been set up throughout the large field which had been offered by one of the estate owners, but not all those attending would be eating at the same time, nor would all those who would be eating choose to sit down at the table for the field was dry and the grass soft and inviting.
There is an area meant for music and dancing, where musicians are already setting up, and another for an evening bonfire. The wooden construction has already been built - but it has not as of yet been kindled.
