For those interested, I saw today the Rings of Power season 2 trailer was released. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCwmXY_f-e0 for the season coming out August 29.

biased but I am bummed they are not shooting in New Zealand anymore and it will obviously be a detriment to the show.

Laylin: I am aware of it, but I have no interest in anything of the series. *nods*

Aiks, you just gave me another reason why I like you. No interest. None.

Thanks for the info, @Lail. I am at the point now where I watch to see how they butcher it. Still, at the end of the day, it is our beloved Tolkien, and I would like to support anything that keeps his work/memory alive. And I must say, Khazad-dûm looked fantastic, even with all the silly hydroponics.

Drifa, I am absolutely not going to get in a fight with you. It is the very last thing in the world that I would wish for. No, no, no. But I cannot allow your sentiment to stand unchallenged.

One can honour the memory of anyone, or otherwise. That otherwise can twist and pervert memory. There is a phrase that someone is now turning in their grave. I give you the quotation from Christopher Tolkien that heads the Guide to Stairs.
Tolkien has become a monster, devoured by his own popularity and absorbed into the absurdity of our time… The chasm between the beauty and seriousness of the work, and what it has become, has overwhelmed me. The commercialization has reduced the aesthetic and philosophical impact of the creation to nothing. There is only one solution for me: to turn my head away. (Christopher Tolkien, Le Monde, 2012)

Chrys: To each their own likings and opinions. It is the same as with the crusade of Disney with the original Legend version of Star Wars, that cancels out the Old and New Republic, the Empire and the Remnant, the Vong, and the loads of novels ever written. That is true SW to me, just as what the books of Tolkien and the nice adaptation of the movies of Peter Jackson are. But not what companies like Nexflix and Disney make of it. I never have to see or hear of their creations. It is only a big money pit for them. They make only as long it cashes, when no longer, it is dumped on the garbage heap and forgotten.

I enjoyed season 1 well enough for what it is: someone's interpretation of a world and story that had positive and negative aspects. I really loved the hobbits. I was quite surprised I enjoyed Elrond as a character. I didn't love Galadriel so much. I will likely feel the very same about any show, book, or other media.

I loved that I had a well-produced fantasy TV show to watch (which is still a pretty rare thing) and relax at the end of a day. I do not feel a great need to dissect the show and its inconsistencies with whatever "canon" or "Tolkien's vision" even are. So perhaps, given that, I am their target audience. I'm not dying to watch season 2 but I'm willing to give it a chance.

I find it amusing that you would use that quote, @Chrysophylax Dives, yet you frequent a site built on the back of the monster.

The books will always be first with me. And unfortunately, both J.R.R. and Christopher regretted the sale of the rights to The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit. I hope that the Professor is sailing the waters of the River Adurant near the green island of Tol Galen with his beloved Lúthien (Edith) - not rolling in his grave. And that Christopher is finally at peace.

I first read TLOTR in 1974 and then The Hobbit the following year. I knew of the books but not the author. I lugged my copies of the books around with me for years. I believe it was a kind of a hippy thing to do, which baffled Tolkien, so I have read. I read The Hobbit to my children. But between the late-80s and the release of the first movie in 2001, I got away from Middle-earth.

It was the movies that drew me back. I have to admit I was excited. After all those long years, books finally came to life. But when Glorfindel's bells did not jingle into view, my excitement turned to disappointment. And that disappointment carried on through all the adaptations with only a few moments of enjoyment. Yet, since the release of the TFOTR movie and the creation of The Lord of The Rings Fanatic Plaza, I know more about Tolkien now than I ever did. I have more copies of his books. And not just the TLOTR or The Hobbit - The Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth and every other book that Tolkien penned. Obsessively. Now, I believe I am a Tolkien Fanatic- more so than the youngster who had battered copies of the TLOTR and The Hobbit. I guess I evolved from the movies. And I believe they keep Tolkien's memory alive and his work relevant despite disappointments.

And for those who can not relate to the adaptations, I guess it is best to take Christopher's advice -There is only one solution for me: to turn my head away. (Christopher Tolkien, Le Monde, 2012)

@Drifa, for better or for worse, I am with you on just about all of that. The Hobbit movies really revolted me, I mean on a very deep level I got angry - and then got really fed up with all Tolkien fans because they were not revolted enough. But that is just my way of waking up and moving on and returning to the books, as you indicate. And the fact is that those 3 movies awoke a childhood passion that I had almost forgotten. It was a strange thing - all of a sudden discovering that people you knew quite well had shared the same obsession but never knew it. I remember going for a meal in a restaurant with a colleague and our two partners. I had worked out 20 questions based on dialogue in the movies that I had spotted was taken from elsewhere in the book. My colleague and I had a bet, so if he could identify the textual source of all the movie quotes I would pay for the meal. The two of us spent the entire meal in deep plaza-style discussion while our respective partners got more and more fed up. Ahhh! I used to get back from work and watch my videos of the movies - every day!

Yeah, I have no problem with adaptation. I have two problems: (a) after those 3 movies it sure went down hill in a big way; (b) to this day, on this site, I still find that people cannot read the books clearly because fake movie images have imprisoned their imagination.

Bag-end with no internal corridor but rooms opening onto rooms with internal doors. It is a perversity, and due to this perversity nobody understands the Barrow-downs. I sigh and weep and wail. But the generation who hit the movies before the books are, sadly a lost generation. Their imaginations, I fear, will never be healed.

Whatever is this trailer, which I have not bothered to look at, compare and contrast with this - and weep. The world grows older. Once we dreamed in gold, and now we are grateful for a brass button.

Btw, @Lail are you a Kiwi?

I'm liking what I'm seeing for this season. If they can stay away from the bad 'The Sea is Always Right' stuff, it should be pretty good. With three episodes landing on August 29th, I'll watch them, then wait five weeks so I can binge the rest. (I doubt I'll hold out, but will likely binge through them all for a 2nd viewing)

@Chrysophylax Dives - "Go not to the Elves for counsel for they will answer both no and yes." I live in NZ. therefore they should still be filming it here  I assumed they moved locations to save $

Wow. @Lail. I have never been to NZ. But I used to hang out with a bunch of kiwis once upon a time, and considered moving. I am guessing you are in the North Island?

In place of LotR we now have Hunt for the Wilderpeople, one of my favourite movies of all time.

This latest trailer for Rings of Power is interesting. If they can stay away from the lame 'The Sea Is Always Right' stuff, this season will definitely be much better than S1. Not going into this season expecting any outstanding performances, and I'm expecting the show to take many creative liberties with the lore; I'll just enjoy it as a worthy effort to bring Middle Earth to life like any other fanfic, PJ's movies included.

I'll probably post a spoils thread soon (not sure how much activity is happening in these parts anymore). I rather enjoyed the first 2 episodes. It's looking a bit bolder, more imaginative, better prosthetics/costumes. Story is moving with a better flow than Season 1 (which I just thought was more a boring slog more than any sort of "outrageous crimes against Tolkien"). Season 1 showed enough that they understood certain themes and material better than Peter Jackson actually.

I believe we’re halfway through Season 2 and there’s already more highlights than Season 1 had. Exhibit A: Bear Mcreary and Rufus Wainwright singing “Old Tom Bombadil” to life…

I am indeed though my heart/home here will always be on the South Island where I lived before.

agreed Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a great movie!!

have yet to watch any s2 - can't bring myself to give Amazon money to be honest. and I feel rather fatigued of franchises lately and would prefer to see (and give $ to) something fresh.
