Tercen | Arnyn
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

Tercen wished he had something to hide his face behind. He couldn't quite hide his amusement, but at least he wasn't grinning from ear to ear like he wanted to. Instead, he managed amore subdued smile, although he did avoid eye contact with both of the women. Best not go looking for trouble, this time. He also hoped Arnyn wouldn't at some point in the evening decide to sit down on one of those floor pillows in particular. He resisted the urge to clear his throat, and was almost relieved when Ava led them on to show Arnyn where the washroom was.

At the sight of the exercise room, Arnyn breathed outmore audibly. The room completely surprised her. "You never mentioned she had a room like this," she chided Tercen, but she couldn't take her eyes off the different kinds of equipment. Arnyn stepped in further, and didn't hold back a laugh when Ava stated she liked to stay fit. Enjoy seeing the room? Arnyn shook her head, still overcoming her suprise at everything Ava had in here. "This room..." She turned to grin at Ava. "Is amazing." Part of her wanted to try some of this equipment out at once, but she couldn't do that. It would be inappropriate. Right? Yes. Yes, it would.

Tercen had shrugged at Arnyn's chiding, but he couldn't help but smile when she took in the room and was clearly enamoured with it. It reminded him of when they were kids... "I think this room is a hit," he told Ava more quietly with a happy smile, as he stepped back to her side and slipped an arm around her waist. "You might not get her to leave in time for dinner..."

Arnyn caught his words and raised her hands a little apologetically. "This stuff is incredible. If I could transport any of your rooms to my place..." She sighed whistfully, looking around again. "This would be the one." Not that she had room for any of this. It was all very hypothetical. "I recognize most of this well enough, but... What is that?" she asked Ava, indicating the silk cloth.

Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

It was not hard to tell that Arnyn did indeed enjoy seeing the room. Ava was a bit surprised, even, at just how excited she seemed to be. Even though she didn't know her that well, the way she grinned, the way she spoke of it being amazing, that was enough to tell her that the woman was impressed. Tercen's words brought a little laugh from Ava, and had her smiling happily as she leaned slightly into his side, enjoying the arm around her waist, relaxing marginally. She was pleased to notice how Tercen's sister seemed so enthusiastic just to look at the equipment. In fact, she was relieved that she and his sister shared some common ground.. that was very good.

As she watched Arnyn look around wistfully, Ava began to consider an idea. She kept it to herself for now, pushing it to a back corner of her mind when Arnyn asked about the silk. Ava smiled, glancing briefly to Tercen before stepping away from his side to approach Arnyn, and the silk. "It is.. difficult to explain without a demonstration," She told her apologetically, taking a moment to try and think. "And, unfortunately, I am not dressed appropriately for such a demonstration." She ran a hand down the silk strip, thoughtfully. "If you are familiar with these," She indicated the balance beam, parallel bars, and so forth, "then you may be able to picture it. I have learned how to take some of the positions which I might do, say on the balance beam, and use it with the silk. The splits, for instance. Tercen has seen a little," She added with a little nod to him, while absently toying with part of the silk. "I would then hold the position while suspended from the cloth.. hanging in the air, with the cloth wrapped in a particular way around my ankles, or my hips. It is more.. challenging that way." She explained with a little smile. "I like to challenge myself."

Shrugging, Ava made a decision about that idea in the back of her mind. "If you would like, Arnyn," She hesitated briefly before continuing, "Well. I am used to doing my exercising alone, but you are welcome to join me sometime, if you are interested." She extended the offer, though she added mentally, 'assuming you would still trust me, after what we will end up discussing, later'. Perhaps it was in the hope that they might become friends. She was about to say something else when Edwyrd stepped in and signaled to her. She stepped over to the door to hear what he had to tell her, then turned back to them with a smile. "Ah, dinner is ready to be served. Shall we adjourn to the dining room?" She suggested, preparing to lead the way there.

Evening of Dec 26th

Arnyn listened curiously as Ava tried to explain how the long pieces of silk supposedly worked. She nodded, of course, when Ava half-asked if she was familiar with some of the gymnastics equipment. She was. At the continued explanation, Arnyn gave Ava a thoughtful look, before raising an eyebrow at her brother when he was mentioned, as well. "You have seen this?" she asked him.

Tercen smiled apologetically. "Yep. It's very impressive. I'd never seen anything like it before." He moved to lean his shoulder against the wall, and crossed his arms. Watching Ava and Arnyn together in a room like this... well, it fit. He wondered if this was warming Arnyn up to Ava, before the latter would tell his sister about where she was from and what all of her plans were.

Hearing that Ava liked to challenge herself, meanwhile, Arnyn held back a snicker. Judging from what Tercen had told her, he hadn't been much of a challenge at all... but she gathered Ava was talking about other things, and so kept that little joke to herself. Ava's subsesquent offer, however, caught Arnyn off guard. "Really?" she asked the dark-haired woman, finding it rather unexpected that Ava would extend such an invitation so soon. Arnyn thought it over while Ava went to talk to Edwyrd. Apparently, dinner was ready. Arnyn approached Tercen, who held out his arm to his sister, this time. Arnyn took it, cast another look around the exercise room, and then smiled at Ava. "I'm free tomorrow afternoon, actually. If that does not put you out."

On the way to the dining room, Tercen leaned in a little closer to Arnyn. "You actually have free time? Or did you just mentally cancel something, just to play in there?" he teased.

"You should be pleased I accepted the invitation," Arnyn told him, not bothering to lower her voice as he had. "Didn't you want us to get to know each other better?"

Tercen grinned. "Yes," he said, also no longer lowering his voice. "But can I come, too? Wouldn't want you two to start scheming against me or anything."

Arnyn gently patted his arm. "If you want to join us, you must partake. Right, Ava?" she asked their hostess.

She smiled, pleased to hear Tercen's comments about the silk rope thing. She was rather curious, actually, if Arnyn would want to try it, and if so, how well she might do with it. "Really," She assured her, quite genuine with the offer. While she didn't usually have company while exercising, it was really only because she didn't have any friends to invite to join her. And this trip was all about trying new things, right? So maybe it would be nice, if Arnyn actually came.

The fact that Arnyn accepted her offer was a little surprising, not just because she accepted it so quickly, but also because she was able to come up with the free time as soon as tomorrow! Having heard that the other woman was so busy, Ava had expected that she might say she'd have to see when she would have some time, and that it might be a few days, if she even took her up on the offer. Yet, it was a pleasant surprise, because it told her that she was truly interested, rather than just being polite.

Ava smiled to hear this. "Not at all," She assured her. It wasn't as if she had any plans for tomorrow, yet. And she would have been spending some time in here, anyway. As she led them toward the dining room, Ava couldn't help catching a bit of the conversation between the siblings, and grinned slightly in amusement to hear Tercen accuse his sister of just wanting to 'play' in the exercise room. She could understand the enthusiasm, however, if she and Arnyn were similar in regard to keeping fit. And she got the impression that they were.

Turning with a little smile toward Tercen when he asked if he could come, Ava gave a little laugh then at Arnyn's reply. "Oh, yes. Indeed," She agreed with a faint smirk, rather intrigued, actually, at the thought of him joining in the workout. Seeing those muscles in action... "Sitting off on the side watching is not allowed." She grinned at him as she fell into step beside him and took his other arm.

Tercen already knew the way to the dining room, so she didn't really need to do much guiding. It was one of the smaller rooms in the house, featuring a large bay window that, during the daytime, would allow a lot of natural daylight in. At the moment, it was dark, so the room was light by a fancy crystal chandelier hanging over the table, as well as some candles placed around the room to ensure it was light enough. A fireplace added a bit more light, as well as ensuring the room was warm enough, just in case the large window might let in a draft.

The walls were painted with trees, birds, and mostly blue flowers, which seemed to go perfectly with the blue theme of the room; curtains, tablecloth, chairs, and other accessories. She quickly scanned the table to make sure that all the place settings looked right. Everything looked perfect. She smiled and motioned for Arnyn to select her seat first. The table was round, so it hardly mattered, but she was the guest, so it seemed right to allow her the first choice.

Unexpected but Overdue – Part 1

Unalmis Raxëlilta and Iole Ishen
At the Girls’ Home on the Third Circle.
October (after the Joust / tying in with THIS POST by @Rillewen )

The way that the door was shuddering, with urgent blows struck from the unseen side of it, Iole took a step backward rather than immediately forward. Her thoughts were as far as they could be from contemplating any action rather than to flee up the stairs. Bolt her bedroom door to set a further barricade between her and .. whatever that was. Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately for her, Unalmis recalled (rather belatedly) that the girls had given him a key. The rather more incredible fact was that he had not lost said key, and had it on hand to make use of it. Still the look which greeted him upon his entry was anything but relieved.

What has happened ?” she asked in the same moment that he did. After a further, silent, moment which showcased the nothing which had actually happened, the young woman let go of the wall as though she’d only now realised that she had cowered back against it with both hands behind her. A slender silver hair pin was calmly secured by trembling fingers unto her ebony tresses. But the marks of how fast she had grasped it tightly in her palm before, were evident still upon her pale skin.

Don’t scare me like that !” she uttered half under her breath, turning to the wall mirror and straightening her hair around it’s new accessory. Taking a step back to (also belatedly) wipe his boots upon the door mat, Unalmis watched his pseudo sister slowly calm herself back toward composure.

I barely knocked,” he admitted, rather concerned at her overreaction. Though he did not remark any further on it. An undefinable sound somewhere between a curse and a sigh fell from the shop assistant’s lips, as she turned, stared, and then turned back away from him. “Is Trev here yet ?” he urged her to return to their conversation. If that was what this was.

Trev .. ?Iole marvelled.

You’ve met him before,” she was reminded. “Dark hair, brown eyes, tall up to about .. here ..” he raised a hand, which was lightly smacked away. But his friend was closer to amused than annoyed now.

Are you so keen all of a sudden to talk to him ?” The young woman supposed, against all odds, and forsook the hall mirror entirely for her unexpected guest. She was not ignorant to how keen Cali had been encouraging Unalmis to speak with Trev. ‘The moment he gets back …’ had been mentioned more than once. Though the slightly elder of the two boys had not seemed so keen as he now appeared, to comply. “They got back yesterday I think. He dropped off Cali’s trunk, from her aunt, but must have stopped in since to see his grandmother.

Unalmis paused, not quite sure whether to be disappointed or relieved at that news. They had all been telling Trev to speak with his family more than many times since he had returned. And the revelation that the musician had reunited with his younger sibling, just in time to escort him safely to Belfalas … it made sense. There was no way they could trust that Toby would not tell GrammyU that Trev was back, not now he was home as well.

You can wait here,” his friend suggested. "If he is finally speaking to family, you can't go interrupting .."

The young man observed the woman’s state and dress. “You’re about to leave for work,” he noted. “If I walk you there, we’ll both have company. And maybe we'll meet him, on his way back up from GrammyU's.

Sorrel is going to call for me,Iole mentioned, without otherwise refusing his offer.

No, she isn’t. I saw her earlier. They’re caught up with .. busy. She had to go in early,” he shrugged. “Come on.

Glancing from her friend’s eyes to the hand he held out for her, the shop assistant wondered if Nal had in fact known already that Trev was not here, or simply that Sorrel would not be.

You don’t want to be late,” he told her. And since she did not, she relented.

Tercen | Arnyn
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

Tercen made a face when Ava agreed with Arnyn. Did that really just happen? Were they already started to conspire against him? He wasn't sure if he should be entertained, worried or pleased with the development, so in the end he simply decided on all three. And then turned to a teasing comment of his own when Ava fell into step beside him and took his free arm. "Too bad," he said in a low voice, lowering his head slightly toward Ava, to make sure everyone understood he was talking to her. "I thought I might watch you this time, and you could watch me another."

He had to let out a little "humph!" as Arnyn thumped his other side. Tercengrinned as he turned his head toward his sister. He gave her a casual shrug. Arnyn rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. Once they arrived at the dining room, Arnyn's eyes took in the decorated walls. So much blue... it was a beautiful room. Looking to Ava, as their host, Arnyn understood the woman's gesture, and let go of her brother's arm to walk partially around the table and select her seat. "This all looks incredibly well thought out," Arnyn complimented Ava. "Not to mention, very fancy," she added.

Tercen grinned as he moved to pull out another one of the chairs for Ava. Waiting for her to take it, he shrugged. "Although we clean up well," he said, "we're not exactly used to this, Temptress," he told her.

Ava grinned in amusement at Tercen's words, as well as the way his sister reacted. Having never had any siblings, she did not really know much about sibling relationships, and she did not know whether theirs was typical. But it seemed that they got along very well, so that was nice.

As Arnyn took a seat, complimenting the room, Ava smiled slightly. She moved toward the seat that Tercen held out for her, with a softer smile aimed at him as she allowed him to help her with her seat. "Thank you," She told Arnyn, followed by a little grin aimed toward Tercen after his addition. "Would you like some coffee?" She asked them both, remembering suddenly what she had forgotten. She should have offered that as soon as they arrived. "Or, if you prefer, I also have juice, tea.." She paused to think of the words most familiar to them, "Lemonade? I have other things available, also." She wasn't really sure how to describe some of the things she was most familiar with, but figured the options she had listed were surely common enough that they could pick something.

"To be honest," She turned to Arnyn with a faint smile, "I am not used to being a host." She drew a slow breath. "I have never had cause to invite anyone to my home before, for any reason, least of all to dine with me." She explained. "So, I do hope I have not neglected anything." She paused. "And I hope you will enjoy the food." She added, as Muriel came in rolling a cart laden with trays. "Tercen said he thought you might enjoy something unfamiliar." She hoped that he had been right about that.

Soon the dishes were being set on the table. There was a very impressive layered dish on a platter which was placed in the center of the table, and in front of each person at the table was set an individual dish, each containing a portion of rice with some red berries in sauce, and a bowl of some sort of stew. The cook had clearly made sure that each plate, and each dish, was decoratively arranged. Ava smiled, rather pleased by to see how nice the dish in the center looked, and furthermore, to see that Shiarra had gotten creative with the presentation of the plates of rice and stew.

"Just water would be nice, with the meal," Arnyn told Ava when the latter asked if she would like coffee or juice or some other options. "I would love some coffee afterwards, though."

Tercen hummed his agreement. "Me too." That was easy enough. "Although... maybe some wine with the food?" he asked, wondering if Ava would mind that request.

Arnyn looked interested when Ava said she hadn't hosted before. "This is your first time, hosting?" She raised her eyebrows minutely. "I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't said anything. You are very prepared," Arnyn told her, and it was clear she approved of that disposition by the tone of her voice and the smile in her eyes. When the food literally rolled in, Arnyn gave Ava a pointed look. As if to say: See why someone might think you've done this a million times before?

Tercen whistled low when he spotted the layered dish. "Wow!" He was clearly impressed. "You should do things you've never done before, more often," he grinned at Ava. "Though I guess this should all be credited to your cook..." he noted, with a crooked little grin. "If it tastes as good as it looks..."

Arnyn flashed a quick grin, but mostly she was wondering how on earth one might even go about taking a piece of that layered dish. It was much safer to start with the individual dish that was being placed in front of her. "Thank you," she told Muriel. A look at Ava indicated that their host was waiting for her guests. "It looks delicious." Slowly, she picked up her fork to try a bite of the stew. It did not disappoint.

Tercen eyed the individual dish for a moment, seemingly considering something. Then he unceremoniously dumped the stew onto the rice and stirred everything together, before having a mouthful. Still chewing, he gave Ava a clear look of approval.

"Of course," Ava smiled at Tercen when he asked for wine. She had not listed wine in with the options, because of what he'd told her of his sister's preferences, but she did have plenty to choose from. After finding out if he preferred white or red, she passed on the request for water for all of them, a red wine for Tercen, then paused briefly before asking for lemonade for herself. "Are you sure you don't want anything besides water?" She asked Arnyn, checking.

As Arnyn expressed surprise to hear that she had never hosted before, Ava smiled softly. "Thank you. I'm glad to hear it." She really was a bit relieved that she didn't seem to be floundering at this. She didn't like that feeling at all. At Tercen's whistle, and following words, Ava grinned and let out a light laugh. She was glad to see that he appeared impressed. "I will be certain to pass on the compliments to my cook. She has certainly done an excellent job," She mentioned, pleased to note how very nice it all looked. She'd be giving her a bit of a bonus with her paycheck this week.

In the meanwhile, she focused on the dinner at the moment. She felt a bit nervous as she waited for them to both try the dish, eager to know what they thought of it. As Tercen dumped the stew onto the rice, Ava couldn't help a smile, for that was exactly what she was about to do. His look of approval was quite welcome. "Tercen," She mentioned, as she poured her own stew over the rice on her plate, although she didn't stir it together. "At the masquerade, you asked me about my favorite dish." She reminded him. "This is the one I was telling you about." For Arnyn's benefit, she elaborated a bit while looking at her, so that she knew this part was directed at her. "It is a traditional dish where I come from, which is best enjoyed with others, usually on special occasions, such as midwinter." She explained. "But, since I was at the masquerade on that evening.. this seemed like a much better option for serving it." She shrugged slightly, then started on her own plate of food, pleased to note that it tasted perfect.

The other dish, she explained, was a sort of 'upside down' casserole of sorts, where the ingredients were cooked, then placed in the pot in layers, and after baking, the pot was flipped onto a plate so that the pot was lifted off, and therefore the layers could be seen. A portion was cut for each person to try it if they wanted to. It had turned out quite well, as well, taste-wise as well as in looks.

The entire meal was delicious, and therefore there was only minor talk between them as they enjoyed the food. After the main course came dessert. Ava had found it difficult to choose one thing from among the various desserts she most enjoyed, but she had not wanted to overload the poor cook. Therefore, she'd made herself select only one dessert to offer. In the end, she had decided to go with one of her own favorites; a baklava cheesecake, garnished with crushed pistachios and rose petals. Once again, the cook had done an amazing job with this, and Ava was highly pleased to see how prettily she had done the garnishes on top. "I hope you both have room for dessert," She mentioned with a light laugh, aware that she had offered more food than what they could probably all eat. She had made sure to save room, herself, but had not remembered to warn them that there would be dessert coming.

Evening of Dec 26th

"Oh, this is the one?" Tercen asked right before taking another bite. Once he'd swallowed, he smiled. "It's great!" He watched his sister a bit more carefully, though, when Ava explained to Arnyn that it was a traditional dish where she was from. There was no way Arnyn would not pick up on that.

Arnyn flicked her eyes from the food to Ava, to Tercen, then back to the food. This was not a dish that she had ever had before. Arnyn had been all over Gondor. In Rohan. In the north. And she had never been shy about trying local dishes. Instead of asking immediately, however, she let their host talk about the other dish. Meanwhile, she observed Ava from a different point of view. Trying to fit the way she looked into a few places.

She also noticed the way Tercen responded to most if not everything Ava said. Arnyn had seen him around some of his other flings, for example when she'd run into them at a place where they'd gone to fetch a drink and dance. But never somewhere where she could talk in peace to the lady in question. Arnyn couldn't be entirely sure, therefore, if her brother always looked this happy around his belle-of-the-moment. All she knew was he did look happy, both to be around Ava and to have her here along the two of them as well. The latter, if not the former, was definitely unique.

Tercen grinned at Ava's light laugh. "I'm not sure I can still fit in in," he admitted. He'd gone a little crazy with the upside down casserole, and had probably had four people's worth of food, including the individual dish Ava had presented them with.

Arnyn rolled her eyes at her brother, and smiled at Ava. "I always have room for dessert," she stated cordially. "Besides... how could I resist not at least tasting something that looks as good as this?" She tilted her head. "Is this also a... typical dessert? Where you are from?" she inquired lightly, watching Ava thoughtfully.

Ava was glad to see how well both guests enjoyed the food, particularly Tercen. She couldn't help being a bit amused as he went for portion after portion of the upside-down casserole, yet she didn't mind it at all. It was nice to see that he enjoyed it, and she had chosen the dishes well.

As he mentioned being unsure about having room for dessert, Ava again thought that she ought to have mentioned that there would be dessert, but she tried not to feel too critical of herself on that. It was too late now. Instead, she smiled at him. "Don't worry, Sunshine. There will be some left." She assured him, figuring it was doubtful that she and Arnyn would finish off the entire thing between them. "Perhaps you will have room later." She suggested. Or, tomorrow, even. She grinned to hear that his sister always had room for dessert, feeling a bit more of a similarity between them. "It is good, I can assure you." She promised, having much faith in her cook's abilities, especially after the meal they had just enjoyed.

After biting into the deliciously creamy treat, she found her faith to be well founded, and she gave a tiny nod of approval. Very good. Arnyn's inquiry gave her pause, however. Ava considered that while she chewed slowly, half wondering if there was more behind the question than it would appear. Had she begun to figure it out? Ava had thought she'd chosen her words carefully enough that it wouldn't give the other woman cause to suspect where she might be from. But perhaps she had underestimated her? Or, maybe she had simply asked out of curiosity. Ava reminded herself that things were, in general, different than back home. Still, having to watch everything she said had become such a habit, it was somewhat difficult to allow herself to lower her guard and relax. To be herself.

She took a sip of her drink to wash down the bite of cheesecake. "Is cheesecake not available.. everywhere?" She asked with a little note of surprise in her tone. She paused briefly. "This variation, however.. it is one of my favorite desserts." She explained. "I hoped you would enjoy it as much as I do." She was aware that she had not specifically answered the question, but she hoped that Arnyn would let it go. For now, at least. She wanted to at least get through the meal without having to bring up a topic that might turn the entire evening sour.

She didn't miss that Ava had avoided answering the question directly. After all, Arnyn was rather sensitive about that. "It is," she replied to their host's question. "But I have never seen it presented quite like this. I figured it might be another traditional thing, perhaps. Figured it also sounded like a better question than asking whether this was how rich people ate their cheesecake," she jested, a little amused smile playing about her lips. Not a joke she would have readily made, in case it would make their host a bit self-conscious, but after Ava's avoidance, and considering the confidence the woman seemed to have, Arnyn supposed Ava would take it in stride.

Tercen frowned at his sister a little, before letting out a surprised laugh. "The flower petals are a bit much," he grinned, glancing at Ava, but he still took a bite, even though he was full. "It's good though," he told Arnyn, his mouth still half full. His sister gave him a slightly disapproving look - a combination of that look a sister might have, along with the one a Lieutenant might have - which prompted him to hold a hand in front of his mouth and swallow before shrugging apologetically. "Sorry."

Once she'd had a bite herself, she had to agree. It did taste wonderfully. Like everything else Ava had presented to them. Arnyn told her as much. Once Ava suggested going to one of her parlours, Arnyn tilted her head. "I would not mind some coffee or tea," she dared to indicate, remembering Ava had never hosted before, and now also wondering whether customs were different where she was from, as to here. As he rose from his seat, most of his piece of cheesecake still on his plate, Tercen hummed his agreement. "Me, too." He'd had two glasses of wine with the meal, and one glass of water, but that didn't mean he couldn't enjoy a good cup of coffee anymore. He moved to help Ava with her chair, giving Arnyn a bit of an amused look. "You'll have to bring a date next time, sister. So you have someone to do these things for you, too."

The suggestion had Arnyn making a face. "I can move my own chair," she said, rolling her eyes as she made to stand. "Thank you."

Tercen shrugged. "So can Ava. I just like it when she gives me that pleased little smile of hers," he added with a grin at the dark-haired beauty.

Ava couldn't help a little laugh as Arnyn admitted to the fact she had been trying to subtly ask whether this was 'how rich people eat cheesecake'. "Well, I cannot speak for all rich people," She said with an amused glint in her eyes. "But it is how I enjoy it, usually." She did not shy away from the 'rich' label, as it wasn't exactly a secret to anyone here that she was quite rich, after all. She also couldn't help being amused that, despite his saying he wasn't sure if he'd have room for dessert, Tercen did not decline a piece of the cake. She smiled at him. "They are edible, although they are also for looks. There is a rose syrup used in the preparation process, although I could not tell you how or when it is included." She explained, with a slightly apologetic smile. "For that, you would need to ask Shiarra, or Edwyrd, I suppose." She knew that he had supplied Shiarra with the recipe and had been on hand to aid her throughout the food preparation, for anything she might need.

Despite being unused to hosting dinners, Ava felt that it had gone fairly well, at least so far. Once everyone seemed to be done eating their dessert, she suggested they might relocate into one of the lounges for a bit more comfort. At the mention of coffee or tea, Ava nodded, recalling that Arnyn had mentioned she would want some later. "Of course." She was preparing to get up from her chair when Tercen moved to get her chair for her. His comment was a bit amusing, and she couldn't help but give him just such a smile as he was hoping for before slipping her arm through his. "Thank you, Sunshine." She murmured happily to him.

As they passed through the entryway to move to one of the parlors, Ava paused to speak with Edwyrd, and asked that he would make sure that some coffee would be brought to them in the parlor. That way, Ava need not leave her guests to go to the kitchen for it, and it could be brought to them when it was ready. "Now.. which parlor do you prefer, Arnyn?" Ava asked with a soft smile, leaving the choice up to her guest. While Tercen was also a guest, he had been here a few times before, by now, so his sister was a bit more of a guest.

Tercen grinned when Ava smiled at him in just the way he'd been wanting, and then linked her arm with his. Her quiet, happy comment, made his grin even wider. "My pleasure," he said, and he didn't just say it to be polite. He really did enjoy doing these little things, since she seemed to appreciate them so much.

Arnyn smiled at Ava's question. "The light one," she said, without any hesitation. "With those cushions." That parlour seemed comfortable in a way she was not used to, because even though the colour scheme was similar to that of her own house, the couch and those pillows should prove an entirely different experience, right?

Clearing his throat, Tercen smiled, holding back amusement... for a reason he found wildly entertaining. "Right," he said, trying to keep from laughing. "That one is very nice." He turned to hold out his other arm for his sister. He'd enjoyed walking that way earlier. "Sis?" he extended the invitation. Arnyn gave him a look but nevertheless stepped up to his side, to take his other arm. He led them back to the parlour in question, halting in front of the sitting area. "So..." he began, but was uncertain of how to continue.

"Can we use those cushions?" Arnyn asked, curious what that would be like. "Instead of the couch?" There were three, after all. They could each sit on one, right? If Tercen and Ava chose the couch, though, it might be a little weird sitting on one of the cushions. She'd see what they would choose, first.

Lady Ava
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

As they moved into the parlor that Arnyn selected, Ava found it interesting that out of all the rooms that she had brought them to on the tour (except for the exercise room) Arnyn seemed to prefer the one that was decorated the most like 'home' for Ava. She also found that somewhat pleasing, in a way. When she asked if they could use the cushions, Ava smiled. "Of course." She then motioned toward the lighter colored one that was over to one side of the room. "I recommend this one. It is the most comfortable, and you are the guest." She explained cordially, with a faint smile. "I'm sure that Tercen would not mind letting his sister have the most comfortable seat in the room." She added with a somewhat knowing glance up at him, followed by a tiny smile.

While Arnyn got comfortable on her cushion, Ava brought the other two a bit closer to her, so that any conversation between the three of them would not be difficult due to distance. Once all three of their cushions were arranged so that they could converse easily, while also reaching the coffee table, and so that Ava and Tercen could sit close together, it was perfect. And perfect timing; for the maid, who was taking on a bit of a waitress role for the evening, brought in the tray of coffee just then. Ava smiled. "Thank you, Muriel." She indicated that the maid set the entire tray down, as this was something Ava would do herself.

There was a coffee pot and three cups, along with little pots containing additional options like sugar, honey, or milk. As well as another dish containing cinnamon sticks. The cups were somewhat unusual in that they did not have handles, but they were also pretty, made of porcelain, and painted with flowers. Ava used her right hand to hold one, while pouring the coffee into it with her left, and held it out to Arnyn. She did the same then for Tercen, and finally poured her own.

"I am very glad that you were able to come, Arnyn." She mentioned. "Tercen mentioned you are often very busy, so I was not sure whether you would be willing to come and meet me. But I hoped you would." She paused briefly and considered whether her coffee might be cool enough to drink. Judging by the steam, she decided it was not. "In fact, from some of the things he has told me about you, I believe we may have a good deal in common." She mentioned, starting to feel a bit nervous again, but she knew that she needed to get into this at some point. And easing into it seemed a bit better than the alternative.

Tercen | Arnyn
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

Tercen noted Arnyn looked pleased when Ava readily agreed they could use those floor cushions. He wasn't sure what Ava was thinking, though, agreeing to that - he definitely didn't want his sister sitting on two in particular, and was about to say something, when Ava beat him to it. In a much more diplomatic fashion than he could have ever managed. Oh, thank Irmo. Or it would have simply been too weird. "Of course I don't mind," he said smoothly.

He helped with moving thecushions around as much as Ava would allow. Her deft maneuvering, however, did of course result in Ava and him sitting on the other two cushions. Tercen tried with the greatest effort not to give their hostess the most shameless of grins, as he otherwise might. But with Arnyn there, clearly being her perceptive self as usual, he wasn't going to take any chances.

As Arnyn watched Ava pouring the coffee, she mentally remarked on how poised the woman was. Calm and confident, or at least that is how she appeared. The blonde tilted her head at her words. "Tercen was not wrong," she admitted. "But he insisted I meet you, and how could I resist the offer, really? He's never even asked me to meet anyone else before," she said, a bit amused because she figured that might make Tercen bristle a little. "Let alone insisted." He just shrugged, however, seemingly unperturbed as he casually stretched out his legs and crossed his ankles. Arnyn continued: "Besides, my evenings are mostly free." Though she was surely having her share of social engagements lately, during those evenings. Even if it meant less time to decompress in solitude, it was a good thing, so far. She'd enjoyed the evenings with Tercen, the masquerade and the dinner at the inn. And this evening was also proving to be quite nice. "Tomorrow afternoon... is a happy coincidence," she added. "Unfortunately, that is much more rare these days."

"I am also glad I agreed. It's been very nice meeting you, though I am still rather curious to hear more about you. What has my brother told you that you think we have in common?"

This time, Tercen beat Ava to the bush. "She really liked it when I told her how strong willed and independent you are," he told his sister. "Because she -" he tilted his head to indicate Ava, next to him, "- is no different. The both of you like to take care of your business yourselves. You're both planners." His brown eyes slowly travelled from Arnyn to Ava. "And I do believe you are also both perfectionists," he said, with a half smile. "As well as idealists." It was an opening... If Ava was ready to take it, of course. If not, it was subtle enough not to be a problem, he figured.

Arnyn nodded. "You've definitely proven being a planner and a perfectionist already, this evening," she said with a happy smile. "Do you bring that into most aspects of your life, then?"

Lady Ava
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

Ava gave a smile when Arnyn spoke of Tercen not only asking her to meet Ava, but insisting. She turned a soft smile toward him, at that, as her free hand located his and laced her fingers loosely together with his. The addition about tomorrow afternoon made her nod slightly, noting that it was probably unusual, therefore, that she would have that particular time free. So, it was good timing then, that Ava had made her invitation when she did. She was inwardly a bit relieved to hear Arnyn mentioning that she was glad she had agreed to come tonight, for she had sort of worried that the other woman might have only come because her brother pressured her into it. Or that she was 'enduring' through the evening for his sake. She sounded genuine, at least, so Ava smiled to hear it.

Before Ava could even begin to think about answering Arnyn's question, Tercen spoke up. Ava gave a soft laugh at how he spoke of their both being 'strong willed' and 'independent'. Sipping her coffee cautiously, while looking over the rim of the glass at him in mild amusement as he spoke, Ava then set the cup down. It was a bit hot on the hands over a prolonged period of holding it.

She let her gaze linger on Tercen for a second or two after he had finished, thinking. He was trying to open the door for what she wanted to talk about, she realized. She gave a very tiny nod to him before turning to Arnyn with a little smile. "I suppose you might say that," She agreed thoughtfully. "In fact.. I have been making a few plans about a matter that is of great importance to me." She paused. "A.. project that I have been working on, for some time now, which you may find interesting." She paused, then gave a wry little smile. "You might call it a sort of 'pet project' of mine, I suppose." She withdrew her hand from Tercen's, realizing he might begin to notice that she was growing nervous again, if she kept it in his. Instead, she clasped her hands together in her lap and kept her dark gaze on Arnyn. She drew in a slow breath. Let it out, then half of one in again. Holding herself with a straight back, head held high, shoulders back. While she did not appear rigid and tense, she was also not relaxed.

"You see, I have heard that you and I share a mutual interest in this matter, and that is one reason I thought that you and I ought to meet," She explained. She really didn't know how to explain without also making it obvious where she was from. So, might as well get that over with. She took another slow, measured breath in before she continued in a quieter, confidential tone, while meeting Arnyn's gaze unflinchingly. "For a few years now, I have been working in secret to aid the slave population of Umbar; helping them escape from their masters, offering them a safe place to hide, food, drink.. even ensuring that they receive treatment for any wounds.. whatever else I can do to aid them. The one thing that has, so far, eluded me.. is getting them safely across the border so that they may return to their homes." She revealed, watching the other woman for whatever reaction she may give. "My latest plans.. are in the hopes of solving that issue."

Tercen | Arnyn
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

A project she might find interesting? Arnyn gave Ava a surprised look. Whatever could that be? The only thing she could think of that she and Ava might have in common, was gymnastics. What was the woman planning? Arnyn shot a curious, brief look at Tercen, but he was giving nothing away, besides his slightly concerned glance at Ava when the latter pulled away her hand from his. He noticed the change in her posture, and after a lingering look at Ava he switched to his sister. It seemed like Ava had chosen her moment.

By now, Arnyn was frowning slightly. What was this about? Suddenly, she was wondering if this - whatever this was - was the whole reason that she had even been invited here.
Sure enough, as Ava started to explain more, she mentioned it was one reason for their meeting. One. Arnyn's frown deepened, as an uneasy suspicion wrapped around her mind - that this 'one' reason was in fact the chief one, and any others (like her brother wanting her to meet his girlfriend) were just convenient excuses to add on, and that they'd only make whatever they were about to request from her more socially acceptable. Yet, Arnyn tried to tamp down those thoughts. She was about to hear what the situation was. Stop speculating ahead of time. Arnyn crossed her arms.

While Arnyn respected the way Ava met her gaze, the blonde Gondorian was clearly on guard after the introduction she'd already gotten, her expression now blank. And though little could have prepared her for what Ava dropped on her, Arnyn's expression remained blank as the words filtered through her ears and mind.

Part of her was screaming. How had meeting her brother's apparent girlfriend suddenly turn into work? And not just any regular work topic - but one related to what kept her up at night? The one that woke her, too, covered in a light sheen of sweat?

Another part of her was stunned. Though it now easily fell into place where exactly Ava was from, this was the last topic she'd expected. The last thing she'd expected to hear from a woman her brother would be interested in. Not to mention the fact that the coincidence of it all was, quite frankly, unbelievable.

Another part viewed the woman in front of her with an altogether different look. If Ava had been doing what she claimed, she was putting herself at a great risk. And if she was planning to do even more still, that risk would only grow. It seemed like Tercen's taste in women had suddenly greatly improved.

And the last part... the last part instantly saw possibilities. Opportunities. Manwë's breath. Was this a gift the Lord of Winds had just dropped into her lap?

Beneath all of that, the suspicion she'd felt earlier grew into something tangible, and it dug its claws into her heart. And that hurt a little. Because Ava, and by extention Tercen, needed her for something. And that was why she was here, first and foremost.

Outwardly, Arnyn had remained exactly the same. Her face was still blank. Her arms were still crossed. "And what might those plans be?" she asked, her tone void of intonation as she tried to sort through everything that was going on beneath the surface.

Lady Ava
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

It was clear that Arnyn was surprised and a bit confused as Ava began to talk. While a part of her wanted to put this off, build a bit more of a.. dare she call it friendship? with the woman before revealing any of this, Ava knew it would be best if she just did this right away. For the same reason she had told Tercen who she was, the night of the masquerade, before they became more involved. If his sister was going to react the way Ava feared she might, then it would be best to get it over with before beginning to become friends or something similar. It would only hurt worse then if she wanted nothing to do with Ava, because of where she was from.

The crossed arms did not give her a good feeling about the other woman's thoughts. As the blonde's expression went blank, Ava recognized another similarity between the two of them. A technique to guard oneself and prevent others from seeing what was going on behind that mask. Ava had done that herself plenty of times, when facing some of her peers back home. While she was aware of Tercen's glance, she kept her focus on Arnyn. After all, she did not want to give a shifty impression, nor appear as if she might be telling lies. While Ava kept her own expression outwardly calm and neutral as well, she was practically holding her breath while she waited for some sort of response, reaction.. anything. Her stomach felt clenched in a knot. Her posture remained as it was, and while she somehow managed not to look tense or nervous, she was definitely not relaxed.

As Arnyn stared at her with that blank expression, Ava had to make use of her own willpower to remain still, and not fidget or look away. She felt painfully aware of the silence, every second feeling like an hour. She counted at least eight before Arnyn's gaze flicked over to Tercen, then back to Ava. And finally, she spoke. Remembering to breathe, Ava drew in a breath slowly. As much as she wanted to turn her head and seek the warm gaze of her Sunshine, sitting right next to her, Ava resisted. She took a few seconds to think how she wanted to proceed.

"I will assume," She spoke softly, "You have concluded by now, from where I hail." She decided that she wanted to get that out of the way, first. When the other woman gave an affirmative answer, Ava continued, "Would it bother you, if I speak in the manner that is natural to me?" She checked, preferring not to have to conceal her accent if she didn't need to. And, hoped also that this might make the woman realize how hard Ava had tried to ensure she would feel comfortable here. Once that matter was settled, Ava focused on the question Arnyn had asked, gladly reverting to her normal accent.

"My plan," She began, hesitating briefly. "I intend to purchase a series of houses or buildings, spaced reasonably far apart, but more or less in a line.. along the route from Umbar to Gondor. Using false names, obviously..." She paused briefly to let that sink in. "The purpose of these houses will be to provide a safe place for escaped slaves to hide." She watched Arnyn curiously, both to see how she would react to her accent, and how she would react to this information. "I want to make it possible for them to find their way home. I plan to place some of my staff in each of these, to maintain them. To keep up whatever front will be used. But also, to help the people who will be arriving there, possibly needing healing, food.. maybe even to hide. And, when they are ready to move on to the next one, the staff can help them with getting there."

She drew in a slow breath. "It is.. quite a risk for me to tell you any of this," For a brief moment, a flicker of concern was visible on her face. Concern, and perhaps anxiety. Before she smoothed it away. "However, when Tercen mentioned that you were deeply concerned with this very same issue.. I wanted to meet you. I thought.. you might be glad to hear of my plans." She explained in a quiet voice. "Although, I would not blame you if you find it difficult to believe anything I say." She added, finally lowering her gaze to her lap. "Yet, I hope that perhaps, we can continue to get along as we have been so far," She raised her eyes again to look at Arnyn, inwardly hoping that revealing where she came from had not caused her to reject any possible friendship that could have come of this. Yet, she was already bracing herself for just that.

Tercen | Arnyn
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

Tercen found himself holding his breath even as he tried to keep his face neutral. He was nervous, although it didn't show, but if he already felt anxious, then Ava... His fingers twitched, bereft, when she pulled her hand out of his. Concerned, he glanced at her, but then he decided it might be better to just sort of blend into the background. Or the cushions. Whichever. As he looked at Arnyn, he saw that something Ava had said had made her cautious. The crossed arms, though, spoke of more than just caution. His sister felt wronged, somehow. Frowning slightly, Tercen tried to make sense of that, but failed.

He swallowed in an attempt to ease his dry throat as the two women made direct and prolonged - so long - eye contact and Ava first spoke of her efforts to help the enslaved in Umbar. The attempt proved insufficient, under Arnyn's blank stare. Tercen's gaze flicked from his sister to Ava, and back. And back once more. The air in the parlor felt so hot and stifling, all of a sudden. When Arnyn looked at him, Tercen swallowed again. He wanted to speak. Say something - anything - that might diffuse this unbearable tension... But then --

"And what might those plans be?"

He breathed. His lungs thanked him for it. Next to him, Ava did the same thing at the same time. Once again, Tercen realized how much more was at stake for her, and he looked at her, to offer encouragement if she might need it... to find only that she did not look back. Of course not. Of course Ava figured she had to do this alone. What was it, that she had said? She was not used to asking for help, because it was seen as a weakness in Umbar. And those who were deemed weak, did not survive for long. Had that been it? Tercen's gaze stayed with her, with that exotically beautfiul woman, who was so kind and gentle-hearted in everything he had seen and heard from her. He wanted to reach out to her. She was so close. All it would take was to lift his hand, and -

No. Even though she was not looking at him, he could see the look in her eyes. The set of her shoulders. He had seen it plenty of times. In the blonde sitting across from them. He knew those signs. It was not his time or place to interfere. Stars.

Ava brought up her home, then. Arnyn guessed correctly - though he figured it was less of a guess and more of a conclusion by now. That Ava asked about her manner of speaking, surprised him a little. She was not holding back, was she? Putting it all out there, for Arnyn to see. And judge.
His attention returned to his sister, as he was anxious to learn what she might make of all this. But other than a minute shake of her head to indicate Ava could speak however she liked, Arnyn gave away nothing. Nothing! Even as Ava laid out her plan, his sister gave them absolutely freaking nothing. It was as if Arnyn had frozen into a perfectly lifelike statue of herself - until she moved just a fraction and that illusion was broken. Tercen blinked, and he realized he was sweating. What would happen if Arnyn didn't believe Ava? What would happen if she thought Ava was too much of a risk to allow to roam the streets of the city? Or indeed the wider fiefdoms of Gondor? After the whole business with that sorceress, who pretended to be a recruit - hadn't that been the story? What if Arnyn thought the risk Ava was pretending to be an ally, was too great? A shiver ran down his spine. Would she have Ava locked up? The thought of her in a cold, dark cell, made his pulse speed up and brought a very annoying feeling of urgency to the forefront of his mind.

What is this had all been a terrible idea?

Once Ava had expressed her hope that she and Arnyn would continue to get along, Tercen quickly took in a deep breath and used the opportunity to chime in. "When Ava told me about her plans, she had no idea who I was, let alone who you were. I told her you were second in command three days ago," he explained, his eyes flicking between the two women, "and how I thought her plans might interest you."

Arnyn narrowed her eyes at them both, breaking her blank expression with a faint frown. "Why now?" she asked Ava, ignoring the more friendly-oriented things Ava had said last. "Why come to Gondor now? And not before?" It had been years since the war. But more than that, the timing was.. uncanny.

Lady Ava
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

As Tercen spoke up.. offering some sort of helpful input, Ava was not sure whether it helped or hurt. The narrowed eyes on his sister suggested the latter, but she could not really fault him for trying. He knew his sister better than anyone probably did, after all. And.. was it her imagination, or did he sound as if he hoped to smooth things out between them? She might have smiled at him if it were not for the situation. As it was.. she feared that if she so much as glanced at him, it could appear as if she were trying to convey a plea for him to help her. She did not need to, nor did she want to come across as someone who needed a man to speak for her.

However... Arnyn's questions confused her somewhat. A tiny frown of puzzlement crossed her features as the woman asked 'why now?' She did not understand what that question was about. Was there some sort of significance to this particular time of the year? She regarded her thoughtfully as she tried to make sense of it, before concluding that there could only be something which Ava was not aware of. So, she could not determine what might have made her ask that. She gave a minute shrug of her shoulders. "I heard there was a masquerade ball." She answered after a moment's pause. "I had never been to anything like that. I.. wanted to know what the big deal was." She gave a faint, slightly sad smile. "Social gatherings, where I come from, are not typically a pleasant ordeal, nor are they simply for the purpose of gathering together to enjoy other's company." She explained softly.

Drawing in a slow breath, Ava debated getting a sip of her coffee, but she refrained from reaching for her cup just yet. "For the past few years, I have been trying to figure out a way to get your people back to you. I have been.." She paused to think of the right word. "Accumulating them, I suppose you could say... there are so many more that I want to help, but it is becoming more difficult. While my estate is extremely large, I cannot hide them all there indefinitely. Yet, getting them out of Umbar has proven extremely difficult, thus far. I.. fear that my enemies may be watching me, so I must be very careful in all that I do." She sighed. "I left my servants back home with the impression that I was traveling Southward, in hopes that anyone asking after me would be given false information. It was not easy to get away without arousing any suspicion..." Her thoughts flitted briefly to the man she had danced with at the ball. "Even now," She continued softly, with a slightly troubled expression, "I am not certain that his spies have not discovered where I really went, but I hope.. perhaps I am mistaken."

She paused to let that information settle in the other woman's mind for a moment. "While I did come to Gondor with the hopes of attending a ball, and experiencing new things," She gave a faint smile, thinking of the nice dinner out she and Tercen had enjoyed, and other things, "I also came here.. looking for.. hope." She admitted softly. She realized that she was going to have to be totally honest here if she had any hope of the woman believing her. "Your king is said to be a bringer of hope, I heard. I don't know how true it is. But, I hoped perhaps that I would find someone here that could help me with those few little details." She paused. "Then, Tercen spoke of your interest in this, and when I heard that we shared a mutual goal, I thought.. perhaps I could help you. Or.. we might even help each other." She watched Arnyn, hoping that she might soften up a little toward her. She swallowed briefly before speaking again. To explain what help she needed.

"While I have been here, I've spent much time looking at prospective places to purchase for the last safehouse the people would come to before they reach home." She explained. "It's difficult to pinpoint where the best location would be," She frowned a little. "The people I brought with me were from varied places, and none could agree on which area they thought would be best. Some said Ithilien, others said Pelargir, one thought Harlond would be best.. and so forth." She shrugged minutely. "They dispersed once we were safely in Gondor, and each went to their respective homes."

She reached out at last to claim her cup of coffee back from the table, and held it cupped in both hands. "I realize you have no reason to believe me." She said quietly. "I doubt if I would, in your place. Given the.. history between our peoples..." She gave a rueful little smile at that. "Still, I was hoping you might give me a chance to try and prove I am sincere." She paused, took a small sip of her coffee. She still felt tense, but tried not to let it show as she waited to hear Arnyn's response to what she had said.

The shrug wasn't all that impressive to Arnyn as it preceeded Ava's reply. So she decided to come now, because... she heard about the masquerade? That was why? Arnyn's reluctance grew. "There have been dances before. Every year, in fact. Did you require the mask, to avoid these 'spies'? And if so, why then have you been exploring the city with my brother, without any sort of disguise?" Arnyn wasn't shy in pointing out possible holes in whatever answer Ava might choose to give. She didn't mind showing Ava that she paid atention, either. Nor did she mind the woman knowing that she wasn't gullible.

Mentally, she winced at the usage of the word 'accumulating'. As if she were talking about objects... Arnyn slowly slanted her head as she assessed the woman in front of her. A language barrier? Or a show of how culture seeped into the language?

"Whose spies?" Arnyn asked, picking up on the mention, of course, as well as the fact Ava did not elaborate at all on who apparently was watching her every move. "You said 'his' spies, singular. But you also spoke of 'enemies', plural." She was definitely going to need more information on that.

"How do you think you could help me?" Arnyn asked her, suddenly concerned that she had not been careful enough in hiding their plans concerning Umbar. What did Ava know about that? "And how did word of a masquerade even reach Umbar?" she added as an afterthought.

There were so many things she wanted, needed, to know, before she could consider much of anything. "And all you need help with is determining the best location for this last safe house?" She sounded sceptical. Honestly... didn't the woman have access to maps, with all of her wealth?
Tercen cleared his throat as he picked up on Arnyn's disbelief, and the reason why. "I honestly wasn't sure myself, Arnyn... It is difficult to pick any one place, you know? I thought you might have a clearer look on these things?"

Arnyn's stare fixed on her brother. "Yes, I imagine getting the King's second in command's opinion on what the best location is from where to easily get to different parts of Gondor, would be rather interesting," she noted noncommittally. She saw his stricken expression, and the way he lowered his eyes. Good. Had he even asked any of these questions, himself? Or had he been too distracted by... Arnyn chose not to finish the thought.

It was also very convenient that the escapedslaves she supposedly brought here, had all 'dispersed' already, wasn't it?

Then again... what if it was true?

Arnyn sighed mentally. Why did she seem to draw these sort of things to her?

"Regardless of the history - I don't doubt that there are those in Umbar who seek to do good rather than harm," Arnyn thought to clarify. "I believe there is good and bad in every person, and one is easier to prevail over the other, depending not only on the person's nature but also on the person's circumstances. That also means I believe that the son or daughter of a criminal can choose not to be. And that there are good people in places that have a bad reputation." Arnyn's gaze was piercing. "But you are right. I have no reason to believe you. None whatsoever. You speak well, I will grant you that. But where is your proof?"

@Arnyn
(apologies in advance for the length... but you asked a LOT of questions  )

Lady Ava
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

She had to admit, Tercen had not exaggerated when he warned her that his sister would have questions. Hearing that there were dances every year, Ava gave a tiny nod, but kept silent as Arnyn asked a couple more questions. All very good questions, Ava had to admit. It also made her consider the fact that maybe it had not been such a wise idea to let Tercen show her around the city. That idea stuck in her mind for a moment, wondering if the man she suspected was a spy could have seen her. If he was.. and if he had not been sure of her identity at the masquerade, then he must be, by now. That made her feel rather uneasy.

She slowly exhaled, then inhaled again. Stay calm, she told herself. It would do her no good to panic at the possibility, without even knowing if it was so. "That was careless of me," She admitted softly, once she felt sure she could speak without sounding as anxious as she suddenly felt. She regarded Arnyn a tiny bit warily as she asked about whose spies, and couldn't help thinking that the other woman must not know very much about those running the city. "I couldn't be certain," She answered at last. "At the dance, there was a man I danced with who.. alarmed me very much. He spoke with a distinctive accent, which I had not heard before, but I'm sure I would recognize again, if I heard it." She explained. "I could not pinpoint it, but it sounded as if it must have some traces of one of the many dialects of Haradese, mingled with something else I could not recognize. And he led me in a very.. unique dance. One which I strongly doubt anyone but a native of my land would be familiar with." She shifted slightly. "He also made a few comments while we danced, which made me suspect he might be fishing for information, trying to entrap me.. or perhaps already suspected who I was. I had no idea who he might have been, however. I'm certain I have never seen him before. If he does happen to be what I think he is, then.. there are a few possible options, as for whom he would be spying."

The sudden inquiry about how she thought she could help Arnyn, surprised her. Ava blinked, a bit derailed from thoughts of the possibly spy, and had to align her thoughts with this new question. Two questions, in fact. There were already so many, she was struggling not to feel overwhelmed.. she was trying to be open and honest with the woman. Like Tercen. It was not easy. She was so accustomed to having to conceal her true intentions, trying to prove to her peers that she believed like them, when she did not. Now, she was struggling to show the Gondorian woman that she was NOT like her peers back home. How did one even begin to do that? The only answer she had to that was to simply be honest, and as straightforward as she could manage. Yet.. as always, she was mindful to take care how she worded her responses, lest some of her answers bring even more judgement than she was already getting.

She took a moment to look into her coffee cup while she considered the second question, first. She looked up again after a brief pause. "I heard about the dance from one of the slaves that I helped." She answered. "Someone recently.. arrived in Umbar," She added, pausing to think how to elaborate. "I had never heard of these dances before, but the way she spoke of them, and what was planned for this one.. well, it sounded unreal. Fantastical, almost. I wanted to see for myself. It was the first time I have ever been to anything like that.. and honestly, it far exceeded my expectations, once I arrived." She gave a faint smile at that.

She didn't get back to answering the first question, as Arnyn addressed the matter of the location. Ava realized with regret, after hearing the brief interaction between Tercen and his sister, that it had definitely been a mistake to ask about that. Of course, his sister.. the ranger lieutenant.. would jump to the worst possible conclusion with that. Of course, the woman would automatically believe the worst about her. Of course, she would not believe that Ava could be sincere. Ava never should have let on where she was from. Would Arnyn have been so suspicious of her if she still believed her to be Gondorian? Unlikely. But, the damage was done now.

Part of her was disappointed by the other woman's reaction to learning where she was from, recalling how well they had been getting along before this. The thought that, if things were different, perhaps they would have been friends.. that stuck with her. It was hard to let that go. And yet, somehow at the same time, in a weird way, she was sort of glad for the suspicion. Had the woman been as quick to believe and trust her as her brother, Ava would have been rather disappointed in the woman as a leader of the nation's security. It was a strange, confusing mixture of feelings. Not to mention the lingering anxiety about the possible spy.. plus the question of what was going to happen to Ava, now. Would the ranger lieutenant decide to lock her up? While Ava had not done anything to warrant being arrested or held prisoner.. she also knew that people were put into the dungeons of Umbar for no cause. So, why not here, too? The idea of it terrified her. Not that she would ever let on.

Regardless, she was feeling more and more as if this had all been a mistake. A terrible mistake. These people would never trust her, just because of where she was from. Tercen had been wrong. It wasn't a lie; he was just an exception. She hoped. Briefly, it crossed her mind to wonder if he had been playing her all along, just to bring her to this point.. so his sister could arrest her. Just as swiftly as the thought entered her mind, Ava hastened to push it far off into the back corners of her mind. She didn't want to think that. Surely, that wasn't it. It wasn't a deception, it couldn't be. He was too genuine.. right? He had been so open and honest with her so far, it was difficult to believe that it could all been a lie, and she didn't want to think that of him.. yet she also couldn't help thinking that was exactly what someone from home would do. Could it be that things were not so different here, after all? Had it all been a wild, false dream she'd entertained, only to have everything come crashing around her? She couldn't risk even a glance at Tercen, for fear of what that glance might reveal.. or possibly confirm. She couldn't afford to break down, and she certainly couldn't handle such a heartbreak at the moment. Not with everything else going on in her mind, too.

For a moment, she felt like she could drown in the emotions swirling up inside her at the moment... none of which she could let show on her face. Mentally, she brought her walls up higher, attempting to build her figurative walls stronger and tighter around herself. Striving to block out all the emotions. She must appear strong, give no sign of how she was feeling.. no weakness. And think. She had no idea how to respond, here. This was not at all how she had hoped this visit would go, and as she lowered her gaze down to her coffee cup, she felt her hopes plummeting lower and lower as she realized that the woman was unwilling to give her a chance. That nothing Ava said would change her mind from the prejudiced opinion that had formed already. So much for any hope of gaining allies. What was the point in answering anything more, then?

And then... to her surprise, Arnyn spoke again. Ava lifted her gaze again. Did she hear right? Was she saying that she might be willing to believe that Ava could be telling the truth? She looked at Arnyn thoughtfully, trying to discern what she might mean. When she said she believed there to be good and bad in everyone, Ava couldn't help a wry, yet faint, scoff. "And I believe there are a few exceptions to that," She muttered, though audibly enough for both siblings to hear her. While Ava could understand the other woman not agreeing, she also did not think she knew some of the people that Ava knew.

There was a flicker of relief that stirred in her heart when Arnyn said she was right, but soon it faded as she heard the rest of the statement. Right. Of course. She wanted proof. How in all the world was Ava supposed to prove her claims, when all her efforts thus far had been put into covering up her deeds to keep from being discovered? A brief, humorless laugh slipped out at the irony of it. This was hopeless, right? And pointless. She came close to saying that they might as well leave if that was the case. But she bit her lower lip, turning her head away for a moment. Looking at the fireplace. Drawing in a slow breath, Ava took a moment to try and compose herself. It was getting harder, and she was finding it more difficult to keep from letting Arnyn see through the shields.

That was when it occurred to her that she had been going about this all wrong. In Umbar, she had to hide who she was. How she believed. She had to keep her actions secret, cover up everything, to convince anyone watching that she was just like any of them, that there was no reason to suspect her of being different. She had to lock away her own feelings, keep her expression stony and pretend that the things that went on did not bother her. And now, she was trying to convince the lieutenant of Gondor of the exact opposite. Which meant.. as hard as it was, Ava would have to lower her walls. That was not going to be easy. Ironic.. it was getting harder for her to keep her walls up, yet it would also be hard to let them down. Also, while she had been quite honest with her so far, there were a few things she had held back. She would have to be completely honest if she wanted to have any hope of being believed.

She needed something to swallow. Slowly, she sipped her coffee before setting it down, taking a deep breath. As she released it, Ava felt her posture relax marginally, also. She had not realized how rigid her back had become, nor how tense her shoulders felt. "There is no proof," She said quietly, looking at Arnyn again, a note of wryness in her voice. "You see.. the irony is, I must be extremely careful not to leave any sort of evidence that could be traced back to me, lest it be discovered that I am behind the slave escapes. I cannot risk anyone learning what I am doing.. therefore, I have made sure there is no proof." She explained. She gave a little sigh. "Besides. If I came to you with 'proof', you could simply assume that I prefabricated something to confirm my story. Would you not think it too convenient, if I did manage to supply some sort of proof?" She raised an eyebrow, then shook her head slightly.

"When I came to this city, I did not anticipate becoming so interested in a man," She admitted quietly. At last, she risked a faint smile in his direction, desperately hoping to see some sign that he had not turned against her by now... before looking back at Arnyn. "When I did.. it was not because of who he is, but because of.. how he is. And, how he is not," She tried to explain, although felt somewhat puzzled as she wasn't sure if it was clear enough what she was trying to say. "When he spoke about his sister, I thought it would be nice to meet her. You. But I had no idea, then, that you were a ranger, much less a second in command." She held back a sigh.

"So, no. I did not prepare any sort of proof. I would say that you could ask Edwyrd, but then, would you not assume that I would have paid him to say whatever I told him to say?" She shrugged slightly. She had no idea how her words would be received, but she had to say it. "There were twenty people that I brought with me." She mentioned. "I disguised them as my traveling entourage.. a collection of servants to accompany me as I journey abroad. It is not unusual for a lady of my position." She explained, then leaned forward a little. "They were all former slaves, whom I had, at some time or other, helped to regain their freedom. There are many more such people, awaiting their own chance to return home, back at my estate. Unfortunately, twenty was all I could manage without drawing any undue attention, or arousing suspicion. I did not keep them with me once we reached Gondor's borders. They wished to go to their respective homes and seek their families. I did not stop them." She tilted her head slightly. "I did not do any of this to prove to you or to anyone else that I am what I say I am. I did it.. for them. And, also, to strike a blow to those who trade in slaves.. and because.. I believe it is the right thing to do. I want to put a stop to the whole thing." She emphasized with a little frown.

Sighing softly, she went on. "I suppose I could tell you where to find a few of them, if you really want me to." She shrugged. "But what would it really help? You might still say that I had paid these people to say whatever I wanted them to say. After all.. I did spend all day in Harlond, two days ago. I could have really been seeking people who would collaborate my story, for the right price. How would you know if they were lying or not?" Surely, the woman across from her was not so naïve to think that a person could not be paid to tell a lie, just because they were Gondorian? Besides that, she had strongly requested that the people she brought home did not spread word about who had actually aided them, so unless they went against their promises, she rather doubted any of those people would actually be of much help anyway. "In fact, the only way that I know of to prove any of this to you, is with my actions." She concluded with a little sigh. "My mother did always say that actions often speak far better than words can do." Of course, that would be difficult. And maybe not possible, if the woman was so distrusting of her. But she was trying. "I realize, of course, that will not be easy." She acknowledged, sitting back a little.

"You may not believe me, but I am trying to be as honest as I know how," She drew in a slow breath. "And I may not have made it properly clear what I was asking, before. What I was actually asking, is for advice on the best place where an escaping slave could most readily find.." She briefly paused to think of the right word. "Asylum. Safety, once he or she has crossed the border. In case there was anyone from Umbar, who may be in pursuit.. which I hope would not be the case, by the time they get this far, but you never know. I thought it would be best if they could find help easily. Like, say a town which has many guards, who could defend them should anyone come trying to drag them away again. Or, perhaps.. kind people who could help them with.. things, like.. reuniting with their families, finding them jobs.. or whatever. I have tried to imagine anything that such a person might need, but.." She shrugged slightly and trailed off with a gesture of uncertainty, trying to convey that she was unsure quite how to word the rest; that she didn't know everything a person escaping from slavery might need once they had rejoined the free world. Because she had never been in that situation.

"However," She went on softly, "The truth is, that isn't what I really need help with." She admitted. "I can make a guess at a town, and I can make this happen with or without help from anyone else..." She let her gaze drift down to her lap, at her hands clasped together in her lap. She took a slightly shaky breath as she gave in to letting a bit of her emotions seep into her voice. "I.. need help with something else." She hoped Tercen would not be upset with her for not having spoken of this before. "It is.. difficult, to ask for help. And I have not spoken of this before now, because I don't know if you are the person who can help me." She looked up at Arnyn again. "Perhaps you are, perhaps you aren't." And that didn't mean the woman would help her, even if she could. "I just.." Ava nervously swallowed down her reluctance to speak openly. "I need help. Advice, if nothing else," Her shoulders drooped a bit, suddenly feeling weighted down by all of this burden she'd taken upon herself.

She slowly looked up after pausing for a moment. She remained focused on Arnyn as she took a couple of breaths to try and calm her emotions, at least a little. No sense in them getting out of hand. She brushed a few loose strands of hair back behind her ear. "You asked me, earlier, how I thought I could help you." She recalled. "I don't know. I really have no idea what you might need help with, nor what you may intend to do about the slave issue... or if you even intend to do anything about that issue. I don't know what I could do to help you, if you do. But I do offer whatever help I can give you in this matter. But the thing is," She gave a rueful little smile, "we can free all the slaves currently in Umbar, and in a month's time, we'd have to go through and do it all over again."

With sorrow gleaming in her eyes, she continued, now with a note of conviction in her voice, "There is a.. dark splinter, at the heart of my city. And it needs to be removed," The sorrow in her eyes gained an edge of something that may have been anger. "Only then, can the city begin to heal." She added more softly. "And it so desperately needs healing." She sighed and brought her hands up to her face briefly, finding it very difficult to let so much of her emotions show. It was uncomfortable, and made her feel far too vulnerable for her liking. She lowered her hands, breathing out a bit shakily as she went on. "I.. have been trying to fight this battle.. on my own.. for fifteen years." She spoke in between shaky breaths. "My tactics, my ideas, they are simply not enough." She frowned, upset to be forced to acknowledge her failure. "I don't know what else to do." The admission came in a whisper, and with much difficulty. "I am here, because I am desperate."

Tercen | Arnyn
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

Wait - Ava hadn't realized the risk in traipsing around the city, when she thought there was at least one spy - possibly more - who might spot her? While she did not want to be spotted? Arnyn frowned. Ava seemed like an intelligent woman. She should have realized. Unless... Arnyn's eyes travelled to Tercen, sitting next to the Umbarian. Unless Ava herself had also been distracted...

"Careless, indeed," Arnyn remarked. "You cannot risk anyone learning of what you are doing, or even where you are, yet you let my brother drag you through the circles of the city. If you do not become more careful, you'll end up not being able to return to that giant estate of yours at all." It was harsh to point out, perhaps. But if Ava was lying to her, then who cared if Arnyn was being harsh? And if Ava was telling the truth, then she was much too valuable an asset to allow for the woman's carelessness to take her off the board.

Tercen drew in a little breath at that, and his eyes widened, but otherwise he stayed silent - despite the superfluous mental swearing. He would much prefer Ava not returning, of course. Especially now Arnyn had pointed out that... if there was any kind of spy about who might have seen her... well, her life would be forfeit, wouldn't it? He obviously didn't want that. His gaze dropped to his lap. Maybe... maybe he could convince Ava to stay. If he tried hard enough?

"You were clearly thinking about one man in particular, however," Arnyn countered when Ava said she couldn't be sure for whom the man she'd encountered at the masquerade might be spying. "Even if you cannot be sure. Who does your mind turn to, first? And why would you think he's your main concern?"

When Ava claimed one of the more recently 'arrived' Gondorians had told her about the dance, Arnyn held back a sigh. "Alright. You say you want to help those who've been enslaved, and helped them in the past. That means you care about them, and want them to return to their lives, here. The woman who told you about the masquerade: what was her name? Where in Gondor was she from?" It were two small questions - that did not matter much, on the surface. Yet, it would matter. Later.

Ava's mutter about exceptions, made Arnyn narrow her eyes a little. "Perhaps in some, the good has been buried so deeply, they themselves have forgotten it exists," she said. "Even if they choose not to let it see the light of day... it does not mean it doesn't exist." Yet that did not mean that she would offer a pass to simply anyone. As evidenced by her request to the King about certain Halsads. Yet Ava would not know that. And Arnyn was not about to tell her anything, at present. She raised one shoulder when Ava asked if she wouldn't assume that readily available proof would be fabricated, or too convenient. "Perhaps. It would depend on the nature of the proof," she said with honesty.

Tercen was eying his sister a little apprehensively. He was feeling anxious, and the need to fidget with his hands was growing by the minute. He could tell Arnyn was far from convinced that Ava was speaking the truth, but he also knew Arnyn well enough to know she had not yet decided Ava was telling lies. His sister was in detective mode, and when she got like this, she could be absolutely relentless. He looked over at Ava.
Would she even still like him, if Arnyn put her through the ringer? Ava might get offended. People would get offended for much less, right? When he looked at it from Ava's perspective, she had been risking her life for years to help people... and now she told a Gondorian officer, all she was getting was an interrogation? No recognition at all?

Ava's words, suddenly about him, startled him. Her faint smile, directed at him, though, settled him somewhat. At least she did not look upset with him on account of his sister... yet. He could feel the smile forming on his face, at what she said about him. It faded just a little, when she shifted the topic to Arnyn. Yavanna's bark, sister. Don't mess this up for me.
His hand slowly reached out for Ava's. He hoped with all his heart that she would not push it away. He wanted to show her he was offering some kind of support... if only symbolical. But there was a chance she would see it as showing weakness, and that she would firmly deny him. That would be a blow... but he'd be able to deal with it. Or so he told himself.

Meanwhile, Arnyn was watching Ava like a hawk, trying to notice all the details, any possible tells - anything that might give her a clue as to whether she felt Ava was speaking the truth or lying. At the same time, Arnyn analysed Ava's words as she spoke them, trying to catch holes or inconsistencies if there were any, and to make mental notes of what she wanted to know more about. When she noticed Tercen reaching out for her hand, though, the side of her that appreciated interpersonal relationships gave the analytical, relentless side of her some pause.

And the change in the way Ava spoke... the change in how she let more emotion shine through... convinced her further. Maybe she should dial it back. Just a little. Just... briefly.

"Wanting to stop the slave trade is commendable," she finally said, a bit more quietly. "And I long for the same. But you can understand that I am not in a position to simply believe anyone who comes to me with things like these. I need to carefully balance out the possible risks, lies and traps against the possible benefits, truths and opportunities. It is a terrible position to be in, if I am honest. But it is one I cannot, and do not, take lightly." Arnyn tilted her head. "Do you understand where I am coming from?"

@Arnyn

Lady Ava
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

She remained quiet as Arnyn called her attention to the fact that she had been far too careless, touring the city the other day. But she couldn't help thinking that she had hardly been dragged; she had asked him to show her around, and had very much enjoyed the lunch, the tour, the shopping, and their dinner, after. She realized now, of course, that it had not been the best idea. But she also couldn't quite find it in herself to regret that day, either. "I will certainly be more careful from now on," She replied, although she didn't know if the assurance meant anything to her.

Beside her, she was somewhat aware of Tercen's breath in. But she did not have time to consider that, nor anything else about his reaction. Arnyn was relentless with her questions, and Ava had to give her credit for being thorough. If it were not so uncomfortable for her, having to put herself out there like this, open up and show how she really felt, with someone she hardly knew... she might have been amused, or even impressed by that quality in her.

At the question about the man at the masquerade, Ava gave a slow nod to confirm that yes, she did have someone in mind. After a little hesitation, she decided to address the other matter, first. "The woman's name is Taendis.. I do not know if her family name, however." She replied with a small, apologetic shrug. "She came from.." She paused for a second, having to think through the twenty people she had brought along, to remember which of the various places Taendis had come from. Then having to try to remember the correct name for the place. "...Lossnarack?" She said a bit uncertainly, then frowned, thinking that didn't sound right, but that was the closest she could recall to the word the woman had said when speaking of her home. "She spoke rather quickly, and quite a lot." She smiled faintly. "She mentioned having been a servant in the castle of a lord there before she was abducted and brought by ship to Umbar." She concluded quietly. "Where I managed to intercept her before any harm could befall her."

She cleared her throat quietly, thinking about what Arnyn said about the good and bad in people. "I don't know about that." She answered with a little shrug. She paused, hesitating as she considered how to reply to the question about the spy and who may have hired him. Not because she was reluctant to give an answer to the lieutenant, but because she was not sure she wanted to broach such topics with Tercen there. Because he had clearly known nothing about the way of things in Umbar, and a part of her wanted to keep it that way, for his sake.

Was there any way she could get him to step out of the room for a moment, without it being obvious? She took a couple of seconds to debate that idea, before deciding that he was too clever to not pick up on something like that. Which, of course, was one of the things she liked about him. While she was pondering this, his hand reached for hers. Ava was a little surprised.. partly because she had been a little unsure whether he still had any interest in her, but also because she had not expected him to do that. She turned her head to look at him, trying to assess the look on his face. Then, her own softened slightly into a tiny smile. In his company, she had relaxed far more than she had thought she could, and she had found it surprisingly easy to be more of her real self, while they were together. It occurred to her that maybe, if he had such an effect on her, it could be very helpful to hold his hand. He could be a sort of.. lifeline, or something. She gave his hand a light squeeze. No, she wouldn't be asking him out of the room after all.

While she was thinking about all of that, Arnyn posed yet another question to her. Did she understand? Ava blinked slowly, and nodded. "I think I would be disappointed if you were not asking me these questions, although, I will admit.. it is difficult for me." She admitted with a faint smile. "I am not used to.. this." She closed her eyes briefly, taking a deep breath. She could do this.

"You're right," She told Arnyn softly, opening her eyes again. "There is one man who is the most likely candidate," She did not look very happy about this. "And I have heard he has many spies, so it would not be much of a stretch to imagine they could even be here." In fact, she looked troubled by that thought, and dropped her gaze down to her lap. She doubted that Arnyn would have heard of this fellow. "He is the 'splinter' I spoke of. The priest, of the temple." She looked up at her, her hand lightly tightening on Tercen's. Why, Arnyn asked. Why would she think he was her main concern? She drew a shaky breath.

"This man.. is the main reason why the city is in the condition it is in. He is why, even after the defeat of the dark lord, people of Umbar are still trapped in the ways of old.. I have no idea if anyone else feels as I do, because if they do, they are all too afraid to speak up and say how stupid it is." She let out a sigh of frustration. "No one dares to oppose the temple.. to oppose the priest, rather." She hesitated and swallowed before saying softly, "My parents were murdered for doing so." Her hand tightened briefly on Tercen's, her eyes revealing a glimpse of her sorrow. It was audible in her voice as well, as she continued quietly. "First my mother, because she disagreed with the ways of the temple. Then, later, my father, because he dared to take a stand against it as well.. because she had 'corrupted' him," She scoffed and dropped her head down. "They made an example of him... to show the others what happens to those who turn away from the temple and its teachings."

She looked up and met Arnyn's gaze. "I learned from my father's mistake, and have been fighting the temple in secret, ever since he was murdered. That.. is why I want to put an end to all of this... to him. But I don't know how." She sighed and looked down at her and Tercen's hands. "Someone came close to it, once, before he had even become the priest.. but they failed.. and it worked to his advantage, to give him the opportunity to take over the priest position in the first place." She added regretfully. "If only that person hadn't failed.. my father might still be alive." She shrugged slightly, unsure what else to say. Countless others might be, as well. But she didn't say that thought out loud.

Tercen | Arnyn
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

"Lossarnach?" Tercen suggested, trying to be helpful when Ava did not quite get the name right. He was a bit relieved that Arnyn had taken the time earlier to try and explain her own situation to Ava. It was much easier for him, of course... Although he now did partially wonder if he would not been a very easy target - if it had been someone other than Ava. Someone who had meant him and his country harm. Uncomfortable at the thought, he shifted on the cushion.
Ava's reaction lifted some more of his nerves, and his shoulders relaxed a little. Ava would have been disappointed if Arnyn hadn't been making it difficult? One corner of his mouth lifted. That was...

Unprecedented. Probably. Arnyn was surprised at Ava's response, there. Was it too obvious a flattery? she could not help but wonder. If the woman sitting in front of her was a keen judge of character, and if she had experience with things such as these, it would not be difficult for her to realize that only a small minority of people would appreciate a third degree like this. Compliments and flattery were known ways to make the ice thaw between strangers. However, she decided not to think too long on it. Either way, the flattery was irrelevant. If Ava was deceiving her, she would find out - sooner or later. And if she was not laying some trap, then at least it sounded like Ava would not hold it against her.

Back to the possible spies. And the man pulling their strings. The splinter. Arnyn listened attentively, not interrupting Ava. There appeared to be a bit of a family history there, and not an easy one.

Tercen squeezed her hand. "I'm so sorry," he mumbled, hearing about both her father and her mother. "But if... if both of your parents were..." He didn't want to finish the sentence. "How old were you?"

Arnyn slowly sipped from her coffee. The first shock had been processed. And there was no use in it getting cold. "Wouldn't you be one of the priest's main threats? One of the main risks - one of the biggest suspects to turn on him? Given your parents were both seen as traitors?" She slanted her head. "Yet here you are... alive."

Tercen frowned, clearly not liking where this was going. "Come on, sis. There's no need to get rude and suggest they should have killed her!"

Arnyn maintained her calm. "I'm not saying they should have. I am only saying that I am surprised Pharak Halsad has not simply eliminated her."

The name, unmentioned by Ava, had now been dropped. It would warn Ava that Arnyn was not oblivious. And that if she were lying, she would need to tread carefully. It would also tell her very little of what else Arnyn did or did not know. And that gave Arnyn power, in case this was all some scheme.

"I am also surprised that, given the situation with your parents, you have managed to do all the things you say. Can you explain any of that?" Was the priest simply too busy? Were his spies not that formidable?

Lady Ava
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

"Lossarnach," She repeated, carefully pronouncing it correctly as she nodded slowly, then gave a faint smile toward Tercen for that. "Yes, thank you." She had spent a bit of time going over maps to get familiar with the areas where she might end up buying property, but that had not been one of those she paid particular attention to, so the word had not stuck well in her mind. "She had worked for a young lord there for many years, and I imagine she has returned there. It seems like she said that some men grabbed her and put her on a ship while she was out taking a walk or something."

She paused. "I don't know whether you will find her statement very helpful, however." She went on, assuming that Arnyn was asking about this because she intended to check into it. "I did ask that she not mention my name when she told about how she was able to escape from there. I did the same with all of the people." Shrugging, she continued. "If you'd like though, I can ask Edwyrd if he kept a record of their names, and where each of them went. And you may ask him whatever you like, as well." If Arnyn would believe anything the butler said, then it could help. But she didn't know whether the lieutenant would believe him, if she was so skeptical about everything Ava said.

Tercen's reaction, when she spoke of her parents, was understandable. Ava had thus far avoided the specifics, when speaking to him about her parents. He had done the same in regard to his parents, and it had seemed a mutual thing that they agreed not to go into further. Now, it seemed she would have to share more. She drew a deep breath as she looked down at their hands for a moment. Arnyn's question made her frown slightly, thinking about that. Closing her eyes briefly, she tried to gather her thoughts together for a moment, while fighting the instinct to raise her shields again. A tiny smile flicked across her lips at hearing Tercen's protest to what his sister had said about them not killing her, then she looked up at Arnyn in mild surprise upon hearing the name of her enemy dropped from the other woman's lips.

She was quiet for a couple of seconds while looking at the other woman, curious where she might have heard that name. "You've heard of him." She commented, intrigued by that fact. There was a note of surprise, but also a fainter note of sympathy detectable in her tone, if one was listening close enough. She drew in a slow breath and let it out in a sigh. "I cannot tell you how.. immensely relieved I was that they did not kill me as well," She began tentatively. "But.. neither can I tell you why they did not." She hesitated, quietly bringing both feet around to one side, which shifted her torso a bit to one side, so that she leaned a little closer into Tercen's side. Perhaps, hoping he would put an arm around her. This was going to be difficult, because she was going to have to go into some unpleasant details, and she would be telling things she had not spoken of to anyone. But it was necessary, if she wanted Arnyn to understand, and perhaps believe her. She was pleased when his arm moved around her, but she mostly suppressed a smile, and braced herself to delve into the unpleasantness.

"Halsad became the priest when I was about fourteen," She began quietly. "My mother.. she had died of poisoning, a while before that." She frowned. "She did not come from Umbar." She added a bit more explanation. "She grew up in a small island in the Bay of Ormal, in the far south, somewhere along the Ivory coast." She kept her gaze on Arnyn. "My father met her during a voyage when his ship became wrecked on that island. She took care of him while he was injured, and they fell in love, and eventually married." She explained. "She returned with him to Umbar." She paused. "I don't think she was ever entirely happy there." She added thoughtfully. "Her people were opposed to the dark lord, and they rejected his influence. According to the stories she told me, her people had even joined in the battle against Him, long ago." She smiled sadly. "My mother felt very strongly against the darkness that is so prevalent in Umbar. She did not agree with their ways, and she expressed her feelings to my father. Eventually, after his father.. my grandfather.. had passed away, her influence on my father began to have greater effect. He loved her very much." She paused. "So, her death effected him.. tremendously."

Sighing, she continued. "My father.. at the time, believed that it was the priest's doing. The old priest, not Halsad. He.. wanted to avenge my mother, but he could not prove anything, and he knew he could not openly oppose the temple. He was, of course, furious that his wife had been murdered, and he began to work toward trying to find a way to destroy the temple... He wanted to put a stop to it all, because she had tried throughout their marriage to convince him that it was all evil, and wrong. He.. had been raised in it, so it was difficult for him to accept, but he had changed a lot by the time I was old enough to remember. Ironically, her murder was the final thing it took to convince him of what she had been telling him all along." She sighed and looked down. "He knew to be as secretive as he could be in his campaigne, of course. He would go out at night, in disguise.. in a mask, and go into the city to fight against cruelty.. he would speak against the ways of the temple, hoping to gather a group of supporters, in secret, to help him put a stop to the worship of the dark lord." She looked up again.

"Eventually, that priest died.. very similarly to the way my mother died, in fact, and Halsad showed up and claimed the position in his place. Quite.. conveniently, I might add. Shortly before that, someone had tried to burn him to death, and he survived, by some miracle. And because of that, he convinced the people that it was the 'will of Sauron' that he should live, and that he become the new priest. Because it was such a convenient coincidence that the old priest died just about the time that he survived what should have killed him..." She took a sip of her coffee, finishing what was in her cup, then sighed as she rested the empty cup on the side of her knee, legs still curled around to one side. "Anyway, someone must have suspected that my father was the one going around at night as a vigilante, and they told it to the Halsads. They even accused him of murdering the priest." Her jaw tightened and she gained a bitter tone to her voice. "His first act as the new priest was to have my father brought to the temple.. for execution." She closed her eyes for a moment, half wanting to turn toward Tercen and press her face into his side. But she resisted the urge to hide from these bad memories.

"It was.. not a good memory." She said softly, her gaze fixed on some spot on the floor. "I was fifteen when my father was killed," She added, since Tercen had asked. "And I was terrified that they would also kill me. But they didn't." She shrugged and looked up at Arnyn. "I have a few theories, but I can only speculate. Regardless... I've been far more careful than my father was. I avoid the city as much as I can. I.. pretend, in public view, that I disagree with my parent's beliefs. As much as it pains me to do so.. I've publicly disassociated myself from my father's name," She added softly. "Whenever possible, I use my grandfather's name and claim him as my grandfather, while I no longer claim to be my father's daughter." She let out a little huff and a half eye-roll. "I never even met my grandfather, but from all I've heard, he was a terrible man. Just the sort of man they approve of at the temple."

She paused for a moment, thinking. "It might also be useful to mention that, on my own property, security has increased tremendously since my father was slain. It is the one place where I can be myself, and relax. In the city, I am known for being rather.. eccentric, I suppose, for various reasons. But I've tried to be very careful not to give anyone cause to suspect that I am hostile to the temple.. at least in public." She hesitated. "I.. tried to continue my father's vigilante work for a short while, but soon I realized that it was not working and was likely to get me killed in the same manner. I most certainly do not want that to happen." She drew a breath and hesitated for a moment. "Instead, I began trying to do what I could to hinder the flow of funds for those who deal in slaves, hoping to put a stop to that. Also, I hoped perhaps it might effect the ability to gather men for an attack on.. your people, during the war." She explained. "I don't know how effective my efforts were, however. But it was after that when I began to focus on helping slaves escape. Also.. I have been doing a bit of investigating of my own, and I'm quite convinced that it was actually Halsad who killed my mother.. if not Pharak, then one of the others. And also believe that it was the same person who killed the old priest, and blamed it on my father."

Setting her cup down on the table, she rested her now empty hand on her knee. "I disguise myself, obviously, while I'm doing these things, and I don't attempt it too often. I have not been discovered yet, as far as I know. And I suspect that I would know it very quickly, if I had been discovered." She shrugged, then paused. "After our ambassadors returned after speaking with your king and reported what had been agreed between them.. well, most people of Umbar were not happy with the news... But I heard and agreed with their words, even if I could not openly show my support of them." She drew a breath. "They did not live long, after making their report." She explained. "It was not long after that, though, that I began to help people escape, and have been hiding them on my property.. but, I can only hide so many at a time."

Happy Birthday @Rillewen !

Domanol Raxëlilta, with Seri Moss, late on the night of the Masquerade
Court of the Fountain, before the Citadel of the Seventh Circle

Though the night was swathed in a deep velvet hour of darkness, the citadel gleamed like a spear of pure-driven snow that not even night could quench with shadow. Stood, as it was, so close as many in the city might ever get to the sky. And so far from the rest of all that fell away beneath it, that it was a very small any who ever even saw this high. Even in their dreams.

The Seventh gate was lit by lamps on both sides, and guarded not by the usual City Guard, but by the Tower Guard themselves, the personal body of the King’s private bodyguards. Their surcoats were as bold a black as the contrasting embroidery wove intricate snowy designs of a fair blossom, the White Tree itself. Their helms fell down so far to guard each cheek with gleaming silver, even as the plume of feathered sails erupted from each side; the legacy of Numenor, of where their people had been first .. the kings of men.

Domanol had removed his mask before he ever drew Seri up hither, no more keen to feed their concern as he was concerned to be known for his dare. But thankfully, the Tower Guard were often plucked out of the best and brightest of the City, only those who had served for years uncounted, with not even the rumour of a single stain against their name. And while the man draped in fine décor of black and gold this eve could not boast such a reputation, he could call in a favour, with a far more astounding man than he might ever hope to be.

The tower guard who had not even stirred from their post, all throughout the siege of their White city, even as the circles below had crumbled and suffocating smoke curled up the chimney of the mount, while nefarious Nazgul sank and soared about the skies … not once had any of those stood here now, stirred even an inch. A whisper in one feather-gilded ear met no response. Not even a refusal. And so Domanol shrugged back in Seri’s direction.

He didn’t say no ..” he reasoned, and took that as leave enough to proceed with their plan.

No sooner had the man led the woman with him, toward the court of the fountain, their fine shoes sunk into the dusty icing of winter snow, dedicating tiny depressions, like footprints in the sand. Their direction instilled a unified call out from one, and then a further six from his fellow sentinels, in response, and thenafter seven of the closest Tower Guard struck up a uniform pace in the wake of the two ‘intruders’.

The couple bore this entourage all the way to the Court of the Fountain, where the steely sentries paused, poised as if in challenge. But the man had made his promise, and they knew him well enough from all the visits of this year. The King trusted him. He bore the Northern star. And he had promised that he would not even touch .. the tree anyway.

As their escort surrounded, as silent as is stone, the man ignored their presence as only he could, in the presence of the woman that he loved. Curling one arm close about her waist, he let the other rest as softly as wind cradles a small bloom, behind her shoulder. He was thus at both sides of her, in front and also behind all at once, as his lips met hers, astoundingly softly, in the middle.

For a time they were as though a second bough risen out of the ground, some feet from the more famous and precious monument of course. But close enough to see how smooth the white bark, as though the tree itself were wrought out of ice. It’s leaves dark olive green atop and silver shadowed on the underside, were the perfect backdrop. For a moment of all moments.

Their tomb-faced audience they endured for the duration, though Domanol could not have said he noticed after a very short time. And if he had, the expression of joy about his features, cast unto new light by the strange and unusual grooming he had undertaken for the masquerade’s occasion .. could not be denied.

Seven stars and seven stones but only one white tree. Seven guards standing atop seven circles, but still you’re the only only .. for me.” He grinned. And made a take for kissing her anew, before one of the Fountain Guards raised and stamped the butt of his long spear against the frigid stone ground. His fellows followed, as the man within their midst dared imagine it was some sort of standing ovation. And if he were going to be arrested by the morrow, this would all be worth it. "For you," he promised.

For who else could say that they loved any woman well enough to risk such a foolish endeavour ? Who else but the steward or the king themselves had ever held a chance such as they took advantage of in this moment ?

It was mere moments afterward that the Tower Guard, whose name shall not even be mentioned in this narrative, in the interest of safeguarding his identity, made it clear to the mad lover, no matter how well he was dressed or groomed, that was more than enough time. And while Domanol might have argued the point, at any other time, in any other place but this, he was not so fool enough to press their luck. More for the sake of safeguarding Seri from getting arrested, alongside himself.

And so they were duly escorted back to the heavy studded gate. And encouraged to leave, while they still were able to do so without some consequence. Come dawn, would come also the sun. And the step of their feet amongst the snow would melt away with no evidence they were ever there. But the cold air, the forbidden kiss .. the memory of that moment. Hopefully that would last a little longer, maybe even forever. If it did not convince the woman of the North that her man from the South was more reckless and foolhardy than ever a man had been. Love after all, is a force more powerful than sense.
All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not touched by the frost.

Arnyn
Fourth Circle, Arnyn's house
The night of Dec 24th->Dec25th

It was the middle of the night. Yet she awoke. Her chest rose and fell quickly, and she could feel the sweat on her forehead. In her sleep, she'd slapped her hand against the scar at the base of her neck. It had jolted her awake into a sitting position in her bed, after pulling her from the nightmarish vision of a giant red wolf with yellow fangs. A monster, who'd been holding her down, hovering just above her face. Gnawing at her... then inexplicably pulling back.

Arnyn's hand found the chain of her necklace and followed it to the tear-shaped sapphire. Part of her wanted to swear. Another wanted to cry. She did neither. Instead, she drew in a deep breath and let it back out with a shaky sigh, closing her eyes as her hand was wrapped around the gemstone in a death grip.

The knock on her door made her jump, and she looked up with a startled expression as the door opened.

Tercen| Arnyn

"Arnyn?" Tercen's voice was quiet as he peered into the dark of the room, waiting for the candle he held to light enough of his sister's room to see her sitting upright in bed. He'd heard noises that had sounded bizarre - like there was some sort of struggle coming from her room. But she seemed fine?

She let out another sigh - a smaller one. "I'm sorry," she apologized with a little smile. "Did I wake you?"

He blinked. "What were you doing?" He couldn't help but look around the room. No one was here. "For a while there, I thought someone might be in here."

Arnyn shook her head, averting her gaze. "No, I'm alone. Frolicking is solely your and Ava's prerogative, brother. I just... had a dream."

Tercen stepped into the room and put the candle down on his sister's nightstand. He crossed his arms, looking at Arnyn as he stood next to the bed. "A dream."

"Yes. And before you get any ideas, I don't want to talk about it."

He frowned, looking doubtful. "Does this happen often?"

"I don't know," she snapped. "Usually there is no one else here."

"You'd know if you woke up regularly."

"It doesn't happen often. You should go back to bed."

Narrowing his eyes, Tercen assessed his sister's determination. "Fine," he said. "Good night." He scooped the candle back up, and closed the door behind him as he left the room.

Arnyn waited for a few heartbeats, then sighed. Lying back down, she stared up at the ceiling, into the darkness of the room. After what felt like a very long time of trying to fall back asleep unsuccessfully, she shook her head and threw back the covers. She lit a candle of her own and pulled on a robe to head downstairs. When she got to the living room, she saw a few candles were already lit. Her brother was sitting on the couch. Pouring two cups of tea.

"Sit," he told her. "It's almost the right temperature to drink."

With a frown, she sat down. Her body language was cautious. How had he known?

Tercen moved one of the cups of tea over to her side, and then looked up at her with a soft smile. "There you go, sis."

Hesitantly, she returned the smile, and picked up the cup carefully. By its ear, because it was still too hot to hold otherwise. "Thank you," she said quietly.

They did not talk any more as they sat there, drinking their tea. For Tercen, it was enough that he could be there for his baby sister. And for Arnyn, it was enough to know that Tercen wanted to be there. When they were done, he actually cleared the table, brining everything to the kitchen. Then he put an arm around her as they walked back upstairs, and kissed the top of her head before letting go of her. Brother and sister each went into their own room.

And the next day, at breakfast, neither of them breathed so much as a word of what had happened during the night.

Seri Moss, with Domanol Raxëlilta, late on the night of the Masquerade
Court of the Fountain, before the Citadel of the Seventh Circle

Her eyes gazed about in wonderment as they passed through the gates, hardly able to believe that she was actually getting a chance to venture to this final, previously off-limits area of the city. Unbothered by the snowflakes dancing through the sky and settling upon her cloak, Seri's gaze was inevitably drawn to the fountain and the famed white tree. Everything about this place was marvelous, a wonder to behold. No ordinary citizen typically set foot upon this level, and yet here she was, not even a citizen of this fair city.

She had also shed her mask upon leaving the ball. Not only did it not really cover her face that much, but it was metal, and she had no wish to have something metal on her face when going out into the frigid air like that. Her cloak, however, served to cover up her lovely dress, but it hardly mattered. The one who she walked with had already had plenty of chance to admire how the dress looked on her, and he was the only one who really mattered in her eyes. Waiting while her escort spoke to the unmoving guard, she looked around as the small white flakes drifted softly down around her, and thought how pretty it looked, and how wonderful the night was so far. Her breath puffed out in white fog before her, and she took the opportunity to catch her breath after the climb up two city circles, into this thinner atmosphere.

“He didn’t say no ..”

This news, as her companion returned to her, brought a smile of gladness as she took his arm and let him draw her nearer to the fountain. "I wonder if they've ever had such a request before," She couldn't help but wonder aloud in amusement, although in a soft voice. Perhaps the poor guards had no idea whether this went against any rules or not? If none had ever dared make such a request, then the two of them may also be the last, for who knew whether it would be put down in the rulebook after tonight, so that there would be no further uncertainty in the future. If that was to be the case, then this was likely the only chance they would ever have, and so, they must enjoy the moment while they could.

As she heard the call, followed by the others, she cast a glance back and became aware of their 'entourage'. Were they going to stop them, after all? She glanced back at her escort with wide, questioning eyes, but he seemed unbothered by this development. And so, she tried not to let it trouble her, either. Soon, however, all concerns about the guards vanished as his lips came to meet hers, and she forgot all about the chill of the air as his embrace surrounded her in warmth and happiness.

As their kiss came to an end, she smiled up at him as he spoke, a grin blossoming upon her face, at his words. "Let no one ever accuse you, saying that you don't know how to give a lady some excitement," She murmured softly to him with a smile. "And, I should add.. that is one of the reasons I love you," She added, with a light squeeze of her arms around him as he moved to kiss her again.

If she had forgotten about the guards' presence, then she was soon reminded of them, by the stamping of their spears. Though she didn't know quite what he meant by adding 'for you', she didn't bother to ask. She had no objection when he attempted the second kiss anyway, despite all. Or, at least, she didn't mind... until the guards made it quite clear that their time there had concluded. With a slight laugh lingering in her eyes, she hastened along with him to exit the frosty scene, hoping perhaps their next adventure would be found someplace a little warmer.

Tercen | Arnyn
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

She wasn't necessarily planning on finding the woman named Taendis and taking her statement. It seemed like a lot of work to find a person who might not even be able to lend Ava full credibility. In fact, she was not sure whether questioning any of Ava's servants would really tell her much. It might - if Ava were a fraud, if her servants were in the know and if Ava had at least one weaker link. But there'd be no guarantees.

So Arnyn did not yet react to Ava's offer that she could ask Edwyrd anything she liked. Nor did she react when Ava said: 'You've heard of him.' Indeed, she had. None of it remotively positive or neutral. All of it had been bad. Very bad. Arnyn narrowed her eyes a little when she heard the surprise and... something else.. in Ava's tone. Empathy? Fitting enough, Arnyn supposed. Those who had had any dealings with Pharak had all come out worse on the other end. So far. Arnyn was lucky that she had no personal experience with the man.

Tercen wrapped an arm around Ava without hesitation, when Ava leaned into him a little more. Arnyn watched them, her expression neutral. She was concerned, however. If her brother had really decided to enter into more than just a fling this time, he was growing. But... it just figured he had to have chosen a woman who might prove to be much more dangerous than she claimed to be. Arnyn would have to be careful not to let Tercen's interest in Ava influence her own views of the woman.

As Ava dove into how her parents had met and what it had been like for her mother to live in Umbar, Tercen slowly moved his thumb over Ava's bare skin, where his hand ended up draped along her arm. Trying to offer some measure of comfort, where he may.

Someone had tried to burn the priest to death. Arnyn's face remained the same. Even when Ava said that Pharak's survival was what allowed him to convince others that he deserved the influential position at the temple. Madness... Her brown eyes strayed around the room. How difficult to imagine all that madness, all that cruelty... from the luxury of a sitting room such as this one. From the safety offered by the City of Kings. Sitting here in a fancy dress, drinking coffee. Yet, all three of them here knew that the reality beyond what they knew here, was all too real. Regardless of whether Ava was being truthful or not, she would have seen enough in Umbar to know. Just like Tercen - even as a civilian - had seen enough cruelty in the culmination of the war. Just like Arnyn had seen enough... And heard enough. Honestly, they had probably all seen too much.

Tercen shifted slightly when Ava spoke of her parents' deaths, so he could hold her a bit better. What a terrible story... First her mother, then her father... Her mother poisoned, her father executed... His expression was saddened, and he did not know what to say. So all he did was hold her. While letting her continue. As he figured she would prefer.

Arnyn slanted her head, thinking it over. It all sounded too convenient... for Pharak Halsad. It sounded like Pharak had killed the old priest and then blame the man's death on another. Which he could then have executed. And to Arnyn, it sounded like Ava was thinking along the same lines. That Pharak or one of his... allies... had poisoned her mother, and later, the former priest. And that Halsad had then blamed the former priest's death on her father, before having him publicly executed. Arnyn frowned. It didn't take long, in fact, before Ava spoke of her suspicions aloud, thus confirming that Arnyn had been listening correctly to what Ava had been saying in between her words just before.

"Based on what I am hearing, I would be inclined to agree," Arnyn said slowly. "About Halsad's involvement in the deaths of your parents. I was thinking along the same lines, while you were talking." Arnyn could see Tercen blinking at her, a little wide-eyed. Arnyn only spared him a glance before returning her attention to Ava. "In which case, leaving you alive makes even less sense. Why leave the daughter of known dissenters alive? After both her parents were killed by the system they opposed..." Arnyn's frown deepened. "Did they underestimate you, simply because you were a young girl?" If that were the case... Arnyn watched Ava carefully. "I would like to hear your theories," she said slowly. "Even if they are only speculation."

"I would also like to hear what you mean with vigilante work. And how you have been trying to hinder that... flow of funds. And how you moved onto helping people escape their fate as slaves. I will need to hear all of it, before I can even start to make up my mind about you."

Lady Ava
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

Ava was grateful for Tercen's arm around her. As if it somehow helped to keep her connected to him, who had already had such an influence on her. She really couldn't quite explain it, except, perhaps, that his honesty that she had felt so drawn to.. was rubbing off on her? Strange, how things like that work.

A week ago, she felt sure that she would never have agreed to meet with a person of such authority, who could easily decide to lock her up. And yet, somehow, after a few days with him, she had been the one to suggest it.

A week ago, she would never have considered sharing these personal, awful details with anyone. Let alone a woman she'd just met a couple of hours ago. She wouldn't have imagined telling anyone about her feelings toward the temple, the hopes she had for the city, and the feeling of desperation that had pushed her to come here. And yet... here she was, doing just that.

A week ago, she wouldn't have dared reveal her plans, or her secret activities, to anyone. And now... she was. All because she had spent some time with a man? But he wasn't just a man. There was something she found special about him, which she couldn't quite explain even to herself. She didn't really understand it. All she knew was that she enjoyed his company very much, and she was beginning to feel afraid in a whole new way than she had ever felt before. Afraid.. that once she had answered his sister's many uncomfortable questions, he would pull his arm from around her shoulders and leave, never to return. She was starting to worry that this had all been a terrible idea. Initially, she had wanted him here, in case she needed to lean on him for support, or to help mediate between her and his sister, or some such thing. Now, she was starting to think it might have been better if he was not there, so he could not hear some of her answers.

But at the same time, somewhere inside her, Ava felt sure that if she lied now, and he learned the truth later, he would most definitely be upset, and that he may not forgive that. And she couldn't help thinking of the masquerade, when they had first stepped outside. Her reasons for doing so. Because she'd wanted him to know about her.. before they got involved any further. She felt a little torn, yet she knew what she must do. Whatever the outcome... because if he was going to react the way she feared, then it would be better to learn that now, rather than later.

As for the first question, about her theories, that wasn't so difficult a thing to answer. Ava frowned thoughtfully as she took a moment. "I really can't be sure," She began hesitantly. "All I have is.. guesses, really." She sighed. "It is.. somewhat possible that he simply figured I wasn't a threat, being so young. Or, perhaps.. he wanted to show the people that he would spare some. I don't know the man himself well enough to know how he stands on such matters. Perhaps, he figured, if the people saw that I, who was hardly more than a child, had been spared, they would think better of him. Maybe he figured that I was still young enough to conform to the temple's ways." She let out a little sigh before presenting any other theories.

"I was.. also betrothed, at the time," She looked down to her lap. "I have wondered if perhaps he figured, if I was going to marry that fellow, then he would 'train' me into the proper ways. And, maybe, he also figured, if I did not conform, then I could be dealt with at a later time." She shrugged. "Or, perhaps, he simply wanted to leave me to wonder and think about the fact that I could have been killed, but wasn't." She added quietly. "Perhaps, he wanted to hold that over me... while waiting to see whether I would follow in my parent's footsteps or not. All.. just theories." She lightly shrugged the shoulder Tercen had his hand resting on.

Clearing her throat slightly, she tried to think how to explain the 'vigilante work'. "There is... a great deal of injustice. For the slave population, mostly," She began. "Many of the slave owners are.. unnecessarily cruel and vicious. You may have heard something about it," She wasn't sure what either of them may have heard, "But even that... whatever you've been told, I'm sure it doesn't actually do justice to the actuality of things." Ava sighed quietly. "So, my father began... going around at night, wearing a mask.. concealing his identity. And if he saw such things happening, he would interfere. If he heard about something that had happened, he would strike back at the person who had done it.. and so forth." She tried to think back. "It was a long time ago, and there were many things he did not tell me about. I know that he would do things to try and help those who were treated badly, and he would try to help those who were poor. When I took over, I did a few things of that sort, but not for very long. Stopping a slave driver from whipping a slave doesn't really do much, in the long run," She explained regretfully. "Knock him out, and he attacks the slaves again with a vengeance as soon as he wakes. If he were killed.. then the slave gets blamed for it... and the master will simply get a new driver to whip the slaves.. and they are twice as hard on them. My father.. did that... Not me." She clarified. "I.. dislike killing." She added more softly.

Taking a slow breath in, she let it out in a sigh. "And.. in the Warrens..." She paused. "That would be.. akin to your first circle, only.. much more poverty-ridden, and filled with petty thieves and cutpurses, and thugs and that sort." She explained. "Anyway, there are many crime gangs there, who operate and control their little 'territories', and fight one another, and they don't like to have anyone try to leave their ranks. My father used to try and give money to poor families who live in that part of the city, but they'd only get robbed, or they'd be threatened into giving the money to these thugs. Try to stop the thugs, and it only rouses the anger of whatever gang they're a part of..." She explained with a little sigh. "Anyway. I realized within a few months that my efforts to try and help these people.. both slaves and the poor, were about as effective as trying to hold back the tide with my hands." She paused, preparing to explain about the other part.

"Which.. made me re-evaluate my plan, and reconsider what I hoped to accomplish with any of this." She paused. "I came to the decision that the only way to help the city to become better.. was to put the temple out of business. Which, of course, is easier said than done. But, I figured, my father was on the right track with trying to convince people to stop following the Shadow. To put an end to the cruelty and violence... the primary ones behind it all needed to be stopped. I figured.." She paused, looking down briefly. "And, keep in mind, this was the figuring of a sixteen-year-old girl who was seeking revenge for her parents," She added quietly, "I figured, most of the Temple's biggest supporters were nobles, such as my father. I didn't want to kill anyone, but.. I did want to make them pay, for.. what they did to others, and for what had happened to my father... for someone had to have reported him to the priest, but I have never been certain who it was."

She had kept her gaze down as she spoke, but now lifted it to meet Arnyn's, a little tentative. "So, I figured, if they didn't have the funds to keep buying more slaves, then they might not be so eager to mistreat and dispose of the ones they had... and if they had no money, then they would find it difficult to keep supporting the war efforts against those who resisted the Shadow... So, I decided that was how I would fight them." She paused again, bracing herself. Just in case. "So, I began to steal as much of their funds as I could get, as often as I dared... but only from those who supported the cruelty and violence, and who supported my biggest enemy.. Halsad." She gave a faint, wry smile. "I became... a cat burglar." Would they catch that pun? Would either of them find it as amusing as she had, when she selected her costume for the masquerade? And would they think poorly of her, for it? Would Tercen shun her for it?

Tercen | Arnyn
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

Arnyn was watching Ava carefully, trying to discern whether or not she was displaying any of the tells she'd learned indicated a person might be lying. However... Arnyn was also getting tired. Both physically and mentally. It had been a long day, and not the first one this week. She'd been expecting to relax this evening - for the most part. Not to get sucked into what was becoming more and more of an interrogation. Pushing her disappointment at that down yet again, Arnyn maintained her focus on Ava. She couldn't drop the ball, here. This was important. And not just for the regular reasons. Not just because of work. Not just because of her idealism. One look at her brother was enough to know that.

When Ava mentioned she had been betrothed at the time, Arnyn's eyes flicked to Tercen. She could see no sudden surprise. He had known, then? Or he was better at hiding what he was thinking than she knew... Frowning slightly, her eyes flicked back to Ava. It was too personal, she figured, to ask more about. Besides, it did not seem relevant to the matter at hand. Her frown deepened as the woman in her brother's arms claimed that the treatment of slaves in Umbar was worse than they could know. It made part of Arnyn want to fling her cup to the wall. Just how bad could people get? Just how terribly could they treat one another, and still sleep at night? To combat the sadness that threatened to creep up on her, she pulled from her well of cold anger. Surrounding her heart with steel. Thus, Arnyn maintained her outwardly perfect composure. And coldly analysed what Ava was telling her.

I dislike killing. I didn't want to kill anyone. Yet Arnyn hadn't heard whether or not Ava actually had. "Have you?" Arnyn asked her, her tone detached. "Killed anyone?"

Next to Ava, Tercen bristled, ready to speak. Arnyn gave him an iron look. Her brother regarded her darkly, tightening his arm around Ava just a little, but not speaking as he had been about to. "Clearly, I have." Under different conditions, yes, but still. "I am simply asking," Arnyn added, carefully watching Ava's expression and body language. "You did not actually say you haven't." She had to know. She had to get the full picture. Hopefully, she would be able to tell if the woman started spinning lies.

She caught the irony of Ava calling herself a cat burglar, considering her costume at the dance. But her lips didn't so much as twitch into a smile. "You stole from them," Arnyn said slowly, trying to figure out what she thought about that. Stealing... was a crime. But if the money was being used to fund a terrible regime... Arnyn frowned. "What did you do with the money?"

Meanwhile, Tercen was staring at Ava from her side. He had tightened his hold on her before, but had relaxed it again, surprised by her latest admission. Stunned at everything that Ava had tried to do to combat the rot that festered in Umbar. He could feel the tension in her shoulders. Her hesitance. Yet she was laying everything on the table. He was too stunned to find the pun she made amusing, and mildly wondered if she was proud of her stealing, and that was why she had chosen to be a cat? A black cat, he reminded himself.

"Sister," he said quietly, although he was still looking at Ava. "I think we have had enough questions for today." His tone wasn't combative, nor pleading. But it was clear he had had enough.

Arnyn blinked. "I'm sorry?"

He was still looking at Ava, but finally dragged his eyes away from her, to Arnyn. "You heard me," he said quietly. "You are meeting again tomorrow, correct?"

Arnyn drew in a deep breath, considering that question. "I think we are, yes," she finally replied.

Tercen nodded at her. "You can get more answers tomorrow, then."

A bit caught off guard, Arnyn was not sure what to say. Thoughts raced through her mind. Did it matter, if the questions waited one more day? Did it matter if Ava had time in between, to think about her answers? Did she want to enter into a power struggle with her brother? Would winning it prove anything? Would losing it mean anything?
One thing was clear, though. After being roped into this situation, she was now no longer wanted here - by her own brother.

Arnyn swallowed back the stab, and moved off of the cushion, avoiding her brother's gaze. She left the cup of coffee where it had been. "Fine." She did look at Ava. "Thank you for the invitation. Until tomorrow afternoon, then." And without any further words, she stepped out, heading toward where she remembered the entrance hall to be.

Back in the parlour, Tercen took Ava's hand, to keep her there in case she was of a mind to go after Arnyn. "She knows where her coat and cloak is," he told Ava. "She'll manage."

"Have you? Killed anyone?"

The question caught her off guard. Before, with her admission of her burglary feats, her shoulders had tensed a bit. But as Arnyn asked her about having killed, Ava hesitated rather than answering straight away, her back and shoulders stiffening a bit more than they already were. While it would not be visibly noticeable, Tercen would likely feel it, just as she could feel Tercen's own reaction, next to her with his arm around her. And she saw the look his sister gave him, to stop him from saying anything. Was that.. was he feeling.. protective? Over her? She wanted to look at him, to know what was going on there.. to see what was in his expression. She felt his arm squeeze her a little tighter, and she resisted the urge to take his hand and hold onto it. Instead, she let her gaze drop to the floor, taking a moment to think about how would be best to answer that question. It was... not exactly as simple as the question made it seem, and she felt that she might need to give a difficult explanation.

The next question drew her gaze back up. That was easier to answer. But, before she had a chance to do more than open her mouth, Tercen's words stunned both women. Ava did glance at him, then. Wondering, what was he doing? She had asked for this meeting. While she didn't quite expect this many questions... she had gone into it knowing, for the most part, what to expect. It was difficult, certainly, but how would she ever hope to convince her of Ava's intentions, if they didn't talk?

When he brought up the plans to meet the next afternoon, Ava couldn't help feeling slightly surprised when Arnyn agreed that yes, they were still planning to do that. While she hadn't planned to withdraw her invitation, she had somewhat assumed that the other woman would not want to take her up on it. So... to hear that she would still come, she was both glad and also mildly surprised. Yet, she had sort of hoped to clear everything up between them before they parted, tonight. So that there would be no lingering suspicions, doubts, and questions.. for the next day. "You don't have to.." She started saying, but Arnyn was already getting up. It seemed evident that she was eager to leave.

"Until tomorrow afternoon, then."

Ava held back a sigh as she gave a small nod. "I will be here." She promised, fighting disappointment as she watched Arnyn leave. As if she couldn't get out of there fast enough. She had hoped, for a while there.. up until the reveal.. that they might be friends. It seemed unlikely, by this point, that Arnyn would ever be willing to think of her as a friend, now. She only hoped that she wasn't going to show up tomorrow afternoon with guards, thinking to lock Ava up for further interrogation.

As Tercen took her hand, Ava pulled her gaze away from the door and slowly turned to look at him again. She had no doubt that Edwyrd would be nearby to get Arnyn's things for her, so she merely nodded without a word, her eyes searching his. Was he upset.. to learn some of these things about her? Perhaps he wanted to talk to her alone, without his sister there. She had no idea what to expect from him. After a moment's pause, she felt unable to wait to hear what he was going to say. "Are you anxious to leave, now, too?" She asked him softly, trying to brace herself for whatever reply he might give.

Leave?
He blinked even as he frowned. "If I wanted to leave, I would have left," he told her gently. "No guesswork with me, remember?" He gave her a questioning look. "Did I not reach for your hand? Did I not put my arm around you? Did I not pull you in a bit tighter just earlier?" With a soft brush of his fingers, he tucked some hair behind her ear. "I would have been more obvious, but I didn't think it'd be appropriate with my sister here," he said, lifting an eyebrow.

"I didn't know she'd..." He shrugged. "Well... ask questions like that." The concern was obvious in his eyes. "Are you okay?"

She might have argued that his actions could also have other meanings.. grabbing her hand as a way to keep her where she was, for instance, and that it had crossed her mind that he might want to speak to her more privately after his sister left, before he also left. His words, however, gave her some reassurance that she need not be concerned after all. The part about thinking more obvious actions being inappropriate with his sister there made her smile faintly. She was sure that Arnyn appreciated his restraint, and Ava gave his hand a light squeeze in appreciation.

When he said he hadn't expected her to ask those sort of questions, Ava was further surprised by the genuine concern in his face and voice as he asked if she was alright. It was not something she was quite used to... yet. She smiled, albeit a little sadly, and nodded. "I.. did expect most of those questions, I suppose. Or, at least, I can understand her asking, and I might have also asked the same if I were in her place." She answered him quietly. "I'm fine, Sunshine." She assured him. "Really." She paused, then went on tentatively, "It is difficult to lower my shields, to let those emotions be seen.. especially by someone I don't really know. To let them see how.. certain things really effect me. To.. appear the slightest bit vulnerable.. I don't like it."

She sighed and looked down, shifting so that she rested against his side and leaned her head on his shoulder. "And, it didn't even do any good, did it? She isn't ever going to believe I'm sincere, is she?"

She understood Arnyn asking those questions. Peculiar. So when Ava added she might have asked the same questions if the roles had been reversed, and that she was really fine, Tercen started asking himself if he had been the one with the inappriopriate response, here? Should he have let the conversation - interrogation - continue?

But then Ava admitted it was difficult for her to open up. That she didn't like it. Tercen smiled slightly. "Well. Now you know what it's like. And you get a break. So you can prepare yourself better, mentally or emotionally - or both." Whatever. "For tomorrow."

At Ava's questions, he tilted his head to look at her, though he mostly saw hair and not her face now she had her head on his shoulder. "She agreed to still come, tomorrow," he said slowly. "That is a good sign. If she had already decided not to believe you, she would have either declined your invitation when I asked just now... or, if I hadn't brought it up again, surely she would have tried to haul me away from here. Away from you." He gently rubbed her arm. "I wouldn't give up just yet, Temptress."

Edwyrd was there before she could actually open the closet. If he was surprised she was leaving, he did not show it. He didn't need any words, either, and simply took out her coat to help her into it. Arnyn did not object. When he held out her cloak, she reached out a hand, though. When he gave it to her, she thanked him. And when he opened the door to the frigid cold outside, she offered a brief goodbye. Arnyn put on her own cloak as she walked down the steps to the street.

Her shoes seemed to snipe at the stones of the streets as she walked them. As if they were channeling how she felt about being sent away by her brother like that. She just wanted to go home, get this stupid dress off and crawl into bed. To embrace the black abyss of sleep that would allow her an escape from whatever this feeling was. She didn't want to linger in it any longer than she had to.

Yet, after passing through the gate to the fourth circle, she soon saw the lights of a tavern, and they seemed to beckon at her. She heard music coming from within the establishment, and her steps slowed a bit as she hesitated. She did want to go home and sleep. But she also had never finished her coffee. And she most definitely did not feel like making a pot just for herself, at home. Her steps had slowed to a halt, just a few yards removed from the Bay of Belfalas. The dress she was wearing wouldn't be all that out of place, there. A bit on the fancier side, but not out of place. She thought about her day, tomorrow... and that did it.

Soon, she was inside, having put up her cloak and coat, claiming a high chair at the bar that still had an empty one on either side of her. A statement, in case anyone was looking for one. When someone came to greet her, she asked for a cup of coffee with some milk.
Her brother could make her leave his lady friend's house. But he couldn't deprive her of coffee.

While she did understand why a lieutenant of the king's rangers would ask the sort of questions Arnyn had asked, that didn't make it any easier for Ava to have to be asked the questions. And it didn't mean that she liked having the questions hurled at her. But, she had sort of brought it upon herself, after all... asking to meet with the lieutenant, asking her to help her. Trying to offer her own help in any way they might find her useful, and all that.

As Tercen pointed out that now she knew what to expect, and that she had a break.. a chance to prepare, Ava smiled slightly. "Yes.. that is a good point." She agreed, inwardly relieved to have such a break. "Thank you." She added softly, glad that he had stayed. Until the moment when he all but ordered his sister to leave Ava alone... she had half-expected that he might walk her back home instead of staying behind with Ava. But, after that.. trying period of answering rather difficult and emotional questions, Ava found that she was very grateful to have him there to hold her.

When he pointed out that Arnyn had not declined to come back tomorrow, Ava gave a slow nod. He knew his sister better than anyone, she figured, so if he said it was a good sign, then she had no reason to doubt him. The fact that she hadn't tried to pull Tercen away from Ava, was also a relief. She turned her head upward to smile at him when he mentioned not giving up hope. "It's easy for you to say," She half-teased. "You have a king here, who is said to bring hope to all in his kingdom. But I come from a place where hope.. does not survive easily." She refrained from frowning as she said it, and merely gave a slight shrug of the shoulder that his hand rested on. "But, we shall see what tomorrow brings."

He smiled down at her when she replied, and considered her words thoughtfully. "I understand you are not used to it, Ava... That the conditions are different in Umbar, and you grew up in them. But I grew up on the enemy's doorstep. His malice took both of my parents from me." He frowned slightly, feeling like he wasn't getting across quite what he wanted to say. "Don't get me wrong, I agree it is nowhere near the same! What I am trying to say is... circumstances can change. I grew up with a Steward in charge of the city, and the constant threat of the spawn of Mordor. And now we have a King and the Enemy in Mordor is no more."

He brushed his fingers past her cheek. "The conditions you grew up in do not have to remain the same. With the right catalyst, it can all change. Unexpected things do happen..." Tercen changed his hold on her, pulling her gently onto his lap before giving her a rogueish grin. "I bet that when you left Umbar, you didn't think you'd end up sitting with someone like me in your fancy parlour, right?"

When she'd said that about the hope, Ava had really just been mostly teasing. She hadn't exactly been fishing for any sort of response, but when he did give one, she lost the teasing air, and instead, grew more solemn as he spoke of having lost his parents, as well. While she was slightly curious how that might have come to happen, if he did not want to volunteer any details, she wasn't going to ask. "I'm sorry." She murmured softly, hoping at least, for his sake, that it had not been anywhere near as horrible for him as it had been for her when her father died. She was reluctant to speak of that in too much depth.. partly because she didn't want to speak of it, but primarily because she did not want to give Tercen the same gruesome mental image that she lived with, constantly. He didn't need to know the details, and probably would rather not, for that matter.

As he spoke of the conditions changing, with the right catalyst, a tiny smile flickered onto her face again. "I hope so." She agreed. Perhaps she could even be a part of that catalyst, but she still didn't know quite how to make it happen. She was a bit surprised when he pulled her into his lap, and let out a little laugh as she let her arms slip around his shoulders, smiling at him. "No, I certainly didn't." She agreed, shaking her head while still smiling softly. "I'm very glad, though."

After a brief pause, she began toying with a lock of his hair that rested near her hands. "Thank you, for not treating me differently, the moment you found out where I came from." She said quietly, half wondering how that night might have ended up, if he had reacted with suspicion and wariness when she'd told him. She doubted they would be here right now, and that any of the past few days would have gone the way they had. But she didn't really want to explore that line of thought any further. Instead, she switched to something else, and randomly tilted her head at him in curiosity as she asked, "Are you really going to exercise with us, tomorrow?" It was a bit random, but she was rather curious and a bit amused at the thought of him joining them for some of the exercises. Of course, she wasn't going to insist that he did the same things the ladies would do.. but she was amused, nonetheless.

"That's alright," he said quietly, when she said she wassorry about his parents. "Death is a part of life. They died defending those who could not defend themselves." For that, he could be proud. As much sadness as it had brought him. It had been years, now, since his mother had died, and many more years since his father had perished - and while he still missed them at times, especially when he was alone for too long in Ithilien, he had processed his grief.

He was glad for her laugh when she put her arms around his shoulders. It relaxed him further - and cheered him up a little. The mood had plummeted once Arnyn had started in on her questioning. The way she started playing with some of his hair made him smile, and he tilted his head at her words of thanks. He didn't really understand the way she found that so incredible.
Maybe he was just too naive? Maybe her beauty and wit had already left too much of an impression for the other stuff to matter much? But wasn't it really someone's character that counted? He supposed that, in the end, it would all come down to whether or not Ava was playing him. If she wasn't, then he wasn't naive but a good judge of character. And if she was, then... well, then that would make him a bloody fool. But he hadn't gotten that feeling - not once during the time they had already spent together. So he was pretty confident.

Tercen laughed at her question. "I have no idea. It might be a bit weird. I only do some basic calisthenics to keep fit and strong. I'm not obsessed for personal or professional reasons," he half-teased Ava, though it also referenced his sister, clearly. "And I am definitely no gymnast."

She made no further comment about the parent topic, but it did make her thoughtful. She was glad for him, if she was right in assuming that it had not had some lasting, traumatic effect on him. With a little nod, she indicated she understood, and let the topic fade away.

As he laughed and answered her question, Ava felt a bit more cheerful just from hearing him laugh. Her Sunshine. She smiled at that thought, then grinned at the part he said about not being a gymnast. "It's alright, I have other things that might be more to your liking," She assured him. "There are weights, and a punching bag, and things to climb..." She tilted her head, wondering what sort of activities would catch his interest, as far as that went. "So long as your sister doesn't insist you do the same exercises as us, that is.." She added.

As for 'professional reasons', she tilted her head curiously as she continued playing with his hair lightly, and wondered if he referring to her 'cat burglary' activities. "Do you mean my 'feline activities'?" She asked him, and let out a little laugh, partly incredulous that he would make a teasing remark in regard to that. And partly relieved, that he did not sound upset. Then, in a tone a bit less teasing, and a bit more concerned, she added, "Does it bother you? I was.. concerned that it might.. but I could not avoid telling it when she asked me." She explained quietly, wondering how he would reply now. And, if he would have any questions of his own.

"Arnyn might enjoy watching me fall on my ass after what I just did," he admitted, his words and tone indicating he was all too aware his sister hadn't appreciated it - even so, as he said it, Tercen was wearing a smile that didn't seem too concerned with neither his sibling relationship nor his pride, should he indeed make a fool of himself. "I wouldn't mind trying the climbing stuff," he told Ava, playing with her hair the way she was playing with his. "Maybe that'll satisfy my sister enough - if I fall a few times?" His tone was lighter now, as he looked into Ava's eyes.

He laughed again, though more quietly, when she asked: 'Do you mean my feline activities?' Because the way she'd put it definitely made him think of very different things. He nodded to the question, however, because, yes, that had been part of what he'd been thinking about when he'd said 'professionally'.

His expression grew serious when she asked if knowing about her burglaries and stealing bothered him. How could he answer that in a way that reflected what he really thought and felt about it? Without messing it up? "That... is a difficult question to answer," Tercen therefore began, not wanting to leave a long silence. "I mean, clearly it's not a dealbreaker - because I'm still here. And I should probably also start by saying you shouldn't be concerned that it'll be this thing between us that will fester or anything." Then he paused, unsure of how to continue, but he didn't look away from the depths of her lovely brown eyes as he searched for words.

"I was never the kind of person to just listen to authority because someone said I should. Meaning, I've been known to break some rules," he said slowly. His one hand stopped playing with her hair to caress her neck - up and down, in semi-circles, while he spoke. "And while I probably can't claim to have never broken any laws, either - because we have a bunch that are kind of nitpicky and therefore aren't really enforced anyway - I've never broken one of the big ones, you know? And breaking into someone's house and stealing their money definitely constitutes a big one." He tilted his head, frowning a little. "But I figure... your intention was right. You did it to try and stop or at least hinder a really bad guy, as I understand it. Who has a crazy amount of influence over all of Umbar, right? So maybe... maybe breaking the law to stop him... is a better way of showing the world you are a good person than if you hadn't broken the law and had done nothing. They say silence and lack of action is agreement. And while you wisely stayed silent in public, you definitely did not show a lack of action."

Karis Ziranphel
Arriving Home, Fifth Circle, Minas Tirith
December 22nd
Ziran turned down the lane leading home and felt her shoulders relax slightly as her steps brought her closer to their front door. She was weary and felt all the aches in her body, including two freshly taped fingers that she had sprained that morning, but there was something about going home that lifted her spirits. Her morning run had led to several hours at the training grounds, first at the archery challenges and then throwing herself against the ropes courses until her muscles burned and she had gotten tired enough to slip that little bit. If they were going to be crewing a ship in a few months she wanted to be thoroughly comfortable navigating rigging, and it was safer to refresh her skills on dry land than over water.

Her lips twitched in amusement at the thought of her appearance in contrast to the previous evening’s elegance. The exercise had warmed her, but her cheeks and ears were red with cold. Her clothes were clean only because she had made use of the hot baths at the facilities and had taken a spare uniform with her for just such an occasion. She’d stopped by her aunt’s on the way home for a quiet chat and to restock on herbal medicines while Nesta, who she trusted more than the medic on duty, had checked and taped her fingers. Thankfully it was just a sprain, and on her bow hand rather than her sword hand. She would still be able to wield both her weapons.

Unlocking the heavy door, she pushed it open on its smooth hinges and closed it behind her again after stepping through. Her bow, quiver, and satchel each had their spot and were quickly stowed. Shedding her wool cap, gloves, and outerwear, Ziran hung them up in the shallow closet and then crouched to unlace and remove her winter boots, idly wondering if Macardil’s visitors had come already or would later that week. She planned to do some reading in a bit, but needed a warm drink to finish thawing, so pivoted towards the kitchen as she rose.

Lady Ava
Fifth Circle, Ava's house
Evening of Dec 26th

At the comment about his falling maybe satisfying his sister, Ava let out a little laugh. "Is that all it would take for her to forgive you?" She wondered, curious, smiling as she tried to picture this. "If so, then perhaps you might fall a few times on purpose, so as to satisfy her." She suggested teasingly, grinning in amusement. She felt that it would be nicer for her, if there was no hostility or resentment going on between he and his sister. Especially, because of her. She didn't want to be responsible for driving any sort of wedge between them, as the two siblings seemed so close, from what she had seen of them so far.

As he seemed to hesitate briefly before answering her question, Ava waited, trying not to feel too anxious about what he might say. A difficult question? She worried slightly what that might mean. Was trying to find a nice way to tell her that it bothered him? Was he considering whether to continue a relationship with her, or not? At the words that followed soon after, she gave a slow nod, while slowly and silently letting out a breath. It was a relief to hear him say that this was not 'a dealbreaker' for them.

As he gazed into her eyes, she couldn't help but feel slightly warmed as she looked back, into his own brown eyes, and a small smile crept across her face as his hand began to caress her neck. As he reasoned through the matter in the same way that she did, her smile grew a bit. One hand left his shoulder and came to lightly caress the side of his face. "Yes," She agreed quietly. "That is exactly how I see it." She was so glad that he was not condemning her for this thing, and even more happy that he could see the bigger picture behind it all. And although he apparently understood that much about it, Ava found that she wanted him to understand a bit more about it. "Of course.. it's not quite the same there, as here.." She mentioned, hesitating a little. "It's not really like there are all that many laws, back home. Nor, law enforcement, as you have here. Those who are able to take matters into their own hands, do. Those who are not able... suffer." She explained, trying to keep from giving too many details about that as she could.

"I familiarized myself with your laws before coming here, as well as I could, but back home? The guards there are not really for enforcing the laws, but rather.. for following the whims of whoever pays the most. And the 'laws' tend to change depending on who currently holds the position of power in the city." She frowned slightly. "So, robbing from those people... it is also a way to keep them a bit more in check... to hold them back from being able to rise quite as high into power. For, without funding, they can do less than they would have done. Also, if it becomes known that a thief was able to break into their mansion and take their treasures, that shows people that their defenses are lacking." She tilted her head slightly before adding, "It makes them look weaker." She shrugged and paused briefly as she considered whether to add anything else.

After a little hesitation, she went on a little tentatively. "I.. cannot deny that my motives have not always been in the right place," She admitted softly, glancing away slightly. "I was not always as.. whatever I am, now. There was a time, only a few years ago, that I was.. I guess the word would be, more selfish. More.. about the thrill of it." She smiled faintly, a spark of amusement glinting in her eyes although she was looking away from him. "Because, I won't deny that there is a certain thrill to pulling off a dangerous, challenging heist." She shrugged, eyes then lowering to gaze at nothing in particular, off to one side. "In those days, I was more focused on trying to avenge my parents, and in merely striking at those I considered my enemies... although I told myself that I was doing this so that I could continue what my mother had started... carrying on my father's activities, and so forth. But.." She lightly bit her lower lip as she looked back at Tercen. "It wasn't until a few years ago that I... well, came to truly care about helping the people I claimed to be trying to help." She explained, a small, slightly troubled frown creasing her forehead. "I suppose.. I ought to tell your sister about that, too." She said with a sigh. "But, I wanted to tell you, first. While I have the chance." She added quietly, slipping her arms around his torso in a loose hug.

"I know you warned me that she would have questions, but.. I didn't quite anticipate how many," She mentioned with a tiny, wry laugh. "Still.. I do want to convince her I'm sincere. Many of her questions were uncomfortable, and some brought up bad memories, but I am trying to be completely honest.. and open with her." She swallowed. "It is very.. difficult. I am... not used to letting anyone see me like that." Weak, vulnerable, frightened, emotional... she hoped she wouldn't have to explain what she meant to him. "She asked some hard questions." And now, Ava realized, while Ava would have overnight to prepare herself for the rest of the 'interrogation', so would Arnyn have overnight to prepare more questions, and think about what else she'd like to ask, and so forth. Mentally, she cringed at that. "I suppose, I can anticipate many more like that, and others, possibly harder still." She mumbled. She closed her eyes briefly and let out a little sigh, then rested her head against his shoulder. "I am glad you were here with me, Sunshine." She whispered close to his ear. "You, holding me, made it easier for me to get through that."

Macardil
Home, Fifth Circle, Minas Tirith
December 22nd

He was sitting at the small, high table in the kitchen, perched upon one of the two high chairs accompanying it. His sapphire eyes flicked up to note Ziran's entrance once he caught a glimpse of movement in his peripheral vision, thus drawing his attention away from the piece of paper and inkpot in front of him, as well as the quill in his hand. It focused, instead, on the redness of her nose and cheeks.

"Lady Himhathol," he greeted her with a smile that was filled with warmth, still amused by the look that came over her whenever he called her as such, the appelation being as of yet novel enough to draw forth such a reaction from her. Macardil knew it would not last, but he was set on enjoying it for as long as he may. "The kettle is still warm," he informed her, his gaze now catching on one of her hands; the one with the taped fingers. The quill was returned to the inkpot as he slowly rose from the high chair. "What happened there, my Ziran?"

Evening of Dec 26th

"I am not sure what it will take for her to forgive me," Tercen admitted. "I've never really pulled anything like that with her. But she's my sister. I know my sister. We will be fine." Even if it might take a while. He really had no idea whether it would or not. "We've never fought for long."

He smiled when she said he had worded it exactly how she saw it. "More proof we are a good match, then," he murmured at her. He had to frown, however, when she explained about how law and justice worked in Umbar. As in: it did not seem to work at all! His frown deepened at the thought of Ava returning to that. Compared to that... his sister's questions suddenly seemed like a walk in the park. For they were not a threat to Ava's wellbeing. And while he was not oblivious of Ava's caution whenever she spoke of Umbar and how things worked there, he had already heard more than enough to know it was not a safe place. Angmar's pits - it did not sound like it was even safe for someone who actually and truly backed the powers that be in Umbar. Let alone for a rich, unmarried heiress who secretly opposed them. Mentally, Tercen swore. Profusely.

Her admissions about whom she used to be as opposed to whom she was now, distracted him enough to focus on what she was saying again. "There is a time and place for everything," he said quietly. "I am not the man I was last year. Let alone the one from 5 or 10 years ago. If you could even call me a man ten years ago," he continued with a little grin as he adjusted his hold on her to account for the way she'd loosely hugged her arms around him. "People evolve, Temptress."

"As for my sister... you must not tell her I told you this," he warned slowly, thinking over his words even as he spoke, "but for all the walls Arnyn throws up herself, the best way to get through to them is to be honest and open. If you can manage to do that, tomorrow..." Then things should work out. People being vulnerable with her was like his sister's weakness. Because she knew how difficult of a time she would have with it, herself. Because she knew how rare it was. Because she yearned for people to trust her. But he could not tell Ava that. Really, he had already said too much. Tercen sighed, feeling torn between the two. He hugged Ava a little tighter, smiling faintly against her hair. "Glad you were here, too." Here. Not in Umbar. "I mean - I'm glad I could be here, too. For you."

Her steps slowed fractionally when she caught sight of Macardil seated on one of the tall chairs at the table, and his attention already directed at her. Even now, the first sight of him could make her heart stutter, and her lips tilted up in a smile that threatened to crack her chapped lips until he called her by her still-new title. Brow arched as her lips twitched in amusement that it could still catch her off guard. He did seem to love calling her that the past several days since the wedding had made it official. She did like the appellation because of what it meant, even if it still felt strange that she was the one being addressed rather than Silivren, no matter how much mental preparation she'd had. “M’Lord Himhathol.” Her return address was slightly wry and amused alike.

His mention of the kettle still being warm brought a return of her smile, as he seemed to easily read her need for heat, and she shifted her aim for the cupboard. It only took a moment to retrieve a tall mug and a small satchel of spiced tea before filling the mug with water and a swirl of honey. Ziran heard the concern in Macardil’s voice, and she turned to look at him directly a moment before wrapping her fingers around the mug and bringing her beverage with her over to meet him by the table.

She noticed the papers, quill, and ink he had been using with a glance, but didn’t peruse them as she set down her drink in a safely open spot and offered him her hands as she stepped close and looked up at him. “I sprained my finger on the ropes course when I slipped and caught myself badly in the rigging. It paid the price for my misstep, but shouldn’t take too long to heal if I am more careful. Aunt Nesta checked and taped it for me.”

Lady Ava

She nodded slowly when he assured her that he and his sister would be fine. "I hope so," She really did not want to cause any sort of rift between them. But it was nice to hear his reassurance that they would be fine. Hopefully, it would not take long for her to forgive him.

As he spoke of them being a good match, a smile spread over her face. "Yes," She agreed, immensely pleased that he thought so. She did not like the frown that took over his face, as she spoke of what things were like back home. AVa had not meant to cause him concern, nor to trouble his countenance with her own cares. So, it was a bit of a relief that she seemed to manage to distract him from those thoughts, a moment later. And his response brought a little smile back to her own face, glad to hear that he understood. While she was a bit curious what sort of man he was ten years ago, she gave a soft laugh as he added 'If you could even call me a man ten years ago'.

"Yes," She agreed quietly. "People change. I am glad you understand, Sunshine." She smiled at him and placed a light kiss on his jaw. "I hope you will keep that in mind, because your sister may ask me things that will be... uncomfortable to tell, and to hear." She mentioned a little hesitantly, hoping, also, that his sister would understand that. Then, she listened as he shared a little bit about his sister, and recognized that he was offering her some helpful information. Advice, in fact. She nodded slowly, letting him know that she understood what he was getting at. And she felt relieved that she had concluded correctly, early in the 'interrogation'. That she'd realized she must lower her own 'defenses' and show the woman the real her.

Resting her head against him, she was glad to just relax and breathe, resting in his arms. Comfortable. Safe. How had she managed to find such a man to spend her time with? How were things going to work out, after this was over? That thought troubled her somewhat, and she decided she didn't want to think about it. Not now. She just wanted to relax and enjoy the moment, and his presence, while it lasted. Something came back to mind, and she held back a sigh as she spoke again, quietly. "She was right though, you know," She mentioned, looking up at Tercen as she spoke. "We were far too careless, walking around the city, after I suspected a spy from Umbar might be here." She frowned. "I should have thought of that."

How could she have been so careless, after how careful she always tried to be, back home? Was it the fact that she had simply wanted to believe that the danger had ended right along with the masquerade? She desperately hoped that it was all just a false alarm, and that she'd only been being paranoid.. because if it was the case, then what if Tercen was in danger now, because of her?

Mentally trying to shake those thoughts out of her mind, she let out a little sigh. "I had no idea answering her questions would be so tiring," She murmured. There had been so much emotion and stress packed into the last... however long. How much time had passed, anyway? She had no idea how long it had been from the time she admitted her origins to Arnyn, and the time Tercen told her that was enough questions. She still felt bad about the way Arnyn had left. But, as Tercen had said... now she had an idea what to expect, and she could prepare herself a little better. She let her thoughts drift down that road a little bit as she breathed slowly in Tercen's arms, gradually starting to fade away into sleep, although she didn't intend to doze off yet.

Macardil
Home, Fifth Circle, Minas Tirith
December 22nd

He took her hands in his and brought them to his mouth to blow warm air into them. He remembered what it was like to be fussed over, and while it could be nice sometimes, it was mostly very unnecessary. He had no reason not to believe her, for she had no reason to make any hurts seem less severe than they were.

Sapphire eyes connected with hers. "While you were flinging yourself at the ropes, Brenior came to call. Along with his daughter Meressel, and with Dina. They are well," Macardil began, before hesitating as he looked for the words to express what he wanted to tell Ziranphel. "However, they also mentioned something which... threw me."

He brought his arms around his wife in a loose circle, frowning as he continued. "I told you about Halberion Veranis," he first reminded her of his former closest friend. "And about his family. Amelina. Reilly, Alyssa, Moira, Blaise..." He had also told Ziran of how Halberion had once asked him to look after his family, if for whatever reason a time might have come where he could no longer do so himself. Macardil had agreed, of course. There had been no hesitation there. When the whole family had fallen to the flamey destruction of the estate... it had been a heavy blow. "Brenior mentioned Alyssa. Apparently, she lives, Ziran. She lives." His frown deepened and his gaze betrayed his exasperation. "All these years, she has been alive, and I had no idea." Whatever must Alyssa think of him, now? That he did not care? That he had lost all interest in her wellbeing once her father had perished? It was not at all true of course, but how could the matter appear any different to her?

"She is married. To Lord Ansellidus," he spoke quietly. The lord whom Baradaer had ridden for in the joust last summer. "She is also with child. Brenior and the young ladies could not tell me much more."

Tercen
Ava's house, Fifth Circle
Evening of Dec 26th

He could not speak for his sister much. But he did know she preferred seeing the best in people. To a fault, sometimes, or so he had told her in the past. He supposed that was why he was not as nervous about tomorrow as he might have otherwise been. "I think we will be fine, Temptress," he whispered to her, stroking her hair as he held her. "As for the spy and being cautious... For all we know, there was no spy. And even if there was, it's a big city. We'll be more careful, going forward." He tried to make his voice as calm and soothing as he could. "Alright?"

He resisted a chuckle so he wouldn't jostle her as her head also rested against him. "Arnyn can be very tiring," he agreed, whispering just those few words and otherwise staying silent. He could feel the way she was relaxing more and more as he held her, and after a while he heard her breathing evening out. Tercen lowered his head to catch a glimpse of her eyes. Closed. He smiled, hardly able to believe the wonder that was this woman.

He took his time enjoying this moment. A moment he had never enjoyed quite like this before. Finally, Tercen started thinking about what to do next. Ava could not be as comfortable as she looked, and he didn't want her to wake up with a stiff neck or anything. Shifting her arms enough so he could hold her more securely, shifting her slowly and carefully in the hopes of at least not waking her fully, he moved off the cushion, lifting and carrying her. Out of the parlour.

Edwyrd came across them when Tercen had all but left the room. Tercen shook his head, indicating he didn't want to speak (he didn't want to wake Ava) and that they needed nothing from him for now. Tercen carried Ava to her room, gently lowered her onto the bed and took off her shoes. Then he took off his own, pushed back the covers on the other side, moved her there and carefully pulled the covers over her. After a brief moment of consideration, he took off some of his own clothes, threw them over a chair and crawled under the covers next to her, settling her against him in the way that would hopefully bother her the least. He just wanted to hold her a little longer. Before he drifted off to sleep himself.
