Seri - Healer of Bree
Visiting the Healers of M.T.
(a couple of days after the masquerade)

The cinnamon bun was definitely delicious, and she enjoyed it very much. Alas, it had soon vanished from her hand, leaving her with a little bit of stickiness to lick off her fingers. She stepped over to the washbasin to rinse her fingers after all traces of icing were gone, so she wouldn't have any lingering stickiness on them. Meanwhile, she smiled as she observed the tour of the treatment room. "Don't tell me you're into acting as well?" She asked with a little grin, observing the woman's dramatic wave of her hand and such.

She was pleased to hear that she might join the healers here. "That would be good, yes." She nodded her agreement. It would be a good temporary 'job', which ought to allow her plenty of opportunity to both receive and share knowledge with the other healers. "I do wonder how you find time to manage being captain of the rangers, as well as head healer here." She commented, impressed. "My daughter knows enough about healing to fill in for me during my absence in Bree, but she prefers the life of a ranger. Out roaming the wilds, fighting enemies, all that stuff." She looked at some of the jars of ointments and herbs in the cabinet, thoughtful. "I think it would be very difficult to try and juggle both kinds of life, at once. But it does make me feel.. reassured, knowing that she knows how to take care of herself if she or anyone with her becomes injured."

Amber waiting for healer
@Pele Alarion

She looked to the receptionist as she listened to her and was guided to take a seat. "Thank you." She told her as she left her waiting. Shortly she returned but she wasn't alone. Amber was pleased to see Pele and greeted her with a smile. "You as well." she answered but her smile mellowed when the Healer referred to her stomach. She nodded lightly as Pele placed her hand on her arm and she was guided to a treatment room.

She walked next to the Healer and nodded. "Yes, my stomach. It seems to be upset quite often these days. Maybe I've over indulged in such good food since coming here and my stomachs not accustomed to it? I do enjoy the sweet pastries from the bakery in the Marketplace." A guilty smile passed her lips momentarily but then a look of puzzlement came over her as if she realized something. "But I'm usually ill before I eat the pastry so I don't know how that would work .." She grimaced slightly, still confused but that's why she was here. She was sure the Healer could give her an answer, they were educated and knew things far beyond her knowledge.

Healer Pele

“How long have you had this stomach trouble?” Pele wanted to know, as she led Amber into the treatment room and patted the cot. “Come, take a seat.” She herself then took a step backwards and examined the young woman visually with a slight tilt of her head.

“You’ve been back for a while though, and your body should have become used to proper food already,” she deemed. “At least it is good to see that you have managed to put some weight on, sweet pastries or not.” A glint of held back laughter touched Pele’s eyes for a brief moment before she got back to asking more questions.

Leaning against the table slightly, she proceeded: “Say, Amber, is it just feeling nauseous or do you get any pain with it? Sharp pain? Dull pain maybe? And does the feeling bad come on after certain activities or during a particular time of day?”

“Hu?” Pele’s eyebrows rose slightly when Seri asked if she was into acting. “Nah, no acting, though perhaps some lesson or other in it would do no harm,” she said after a while and chuckled softly.

She then fetched one of the jars from the cabinet, filled with crushed peppermint leaves, and breathed in the refreshing scent, as she mulled over the other question the visiting healer had posed. How she managed both Rangers and healers?

“It helps to have good support in both areas,” Pele said after a thoughtful while. “I can rely on the healers here that they’ll keep the place running even if I did not show up for a long time. I think… I tend to spend more time on Ranger matters, perhaps because it is more demanding.”

“Healer Linaiwe, who is like a mother to me, keeps saying I should find more time to rest,” she then added, “But it is hard to find such time. So perhaps it is good that your daughter has chosen to follow one way only and not both.”

She thought to herself that if she stopped keeping herself constantly busy, she might end up being faced with things in herself she did not want to deal with. Such as loneliness even when she was surrounded by people.

“There are physical injuries,” she then said aloud, as if continuing from that brief moment of introspection, even as she set peppermint back into its place and closed the cabinets once she deemed that Seri had finished looking into them. “Healing of physical wounds can be easily verified. But say: have you found ways of how to ensure that people are also whole in their soul? Many are broken after all the losses of loved ones in the war, for example.”

Amber

When asked how long she'd had her stomach trouble Amber had to think for a moment. "Hmm..awhile. Longer then a month I know, at first I just tried to make it go away with some tea but that only worked for awhile." She offered a small shrug before taking a seat on the padded cot. She settled herself comfortably on the cot while the Healer seemed to examine her with the tilt of her head. She nodded lightly in agreeance about having had time to adjust to proper food.

She listened as the Healer continued. She thought about it for a moment before answering. "Well.." She tried to narrow it down. "It's really bad in the mornings, sometimes I can only wait for it to pass with my head in a bowl." She offered slightly embarrassed but continued. "I sometimes get a burning in my chest." She motioned from her stomach to her throat. "Only some crackers will help ease that." She then took a deep breath and continued but this she spoke lower, not wanting anyone to hear.

"The burning must do terrible things inside because I feel tender here." She motioned to her chest area. "This. Here." Her right hand vaguely circled around her chest being more specific. Her hand dropped and she sighed. "I promise to swear off sweets if you can give me something to make all this go away." She had a almost defeated look on her face. She didn't like the idea of giving up sweets but if it worked at least she could get some sleep.

Seri - Healer of Bree
Visiting the Healers of M.T.
(a couple of days after the masquerade)

Seri nodded in understanding at the thought of having support. Right, it would be easier having more than one healer around, so she wouldn't always be the sole one in the area. She recalled, too, how difficult it had been back when all those ruffians and such had come into Bree, stirring up trouble and causing harm to people. The resulting deaths of some citizens who'd tried to fight back, despite not being a tremendously high number, had nonetheless been a hard blow to the people of the Breelands. And there had been nothing Seri could do to help them.

Smiling at Pele's following words, Seri nodded. "Healer Linaiwe sounds very wise." She commented. "Rest can be very healing, even when you may not even realize you need it." She looked in the cabinet thoughtfully while Pele had it open.

There was a moment of silence, as each woman fell into their own thoughts for a bit. Then Pele's question drew Seri's attention back to her. She hesitated as she pondered it. "No.. not really." She admitted softly. "There are some wounds which... well, time may heal eventually, but only partly. The pain eases over time, but it never fully goes away." She sighed softly. She hugged her arms around herself, frowning as she thought again of the casualties of the 'Bree invasion'. "I've lost people I love, and patients I tried to save. I've tried to help other people who have lost loved ones, too. It's always hard. That brokenness may lessen over time, so you can go about your life as if things are normal, but..." She shrugged slightly. "It's never really the same." She then offered a wry smile. "I've even lost people I never knew, and it hurts in a different way, just wondering what sort of relationship we might have had." She added. "It's... a strange feeling, missing someone you never even knew."

She glanced at Pele, thoughtful. "Having other loved ones around, can help ease that pain, at least." She added. "Being isolated from others... I've found that usually makes it hurt all the more. So whenever possible, a person who is suffering from a loss of that sort, I would always recommend they try to surround themselves with loving, caring people who understand their pain, and who can help them to get through the difficult adjustment period, and so on." She paused, wondering if the Minas Tirith healers had any better 'prescription' to offer. "That is the best medicine I've ever found for such wounds, anyway."

Gwestion with Nurse Maeth
Before Dawn, Dec 31 (4A 1)

As it turned out, Gwestion was fairly sure it would be easier to escape from Mordor than from the watchful eye of the nurse on duty tonight. Nurse Maeth insisted the guard help the patient into a chair with wheels mounted onto it, and would not hear any argument against it. Gwestion idly thought something like that would have been quite convenient to have had, back a few years ago when he'd suffered a broken leg. But he wasn't too happy to be confined to it, at the moment.

"Now, you just sit still, and I'll get you into a treatment room right away." Maeth told him. While she had a 'no nonsense' sort of air about her, she also had a kind, motherly way of going about it.

Gwestion held back a sigh as he rested his foot on the footrest, with only a little cringe. He nodded, allowing the woman to wheel him into another room.

"Can you get onto the bed by yourself?" She inquired, unsure whether she would need to aid the young man.

"Yes, I can manage," He assured her, though he held back a sigh. He hovered his injured foot over the floor while transitioning from one seat to another.

"Now, what happened, if I may ask?" Maeth asked, so that she would have all the information to give to the healer.

"Oh," Gwestion looked down at his foot, sighing. "I uh, seem to have caught my foot on something, so when I turned, my foot didn't turn with me." He explained. "And then I hit the stones in return." He added, holding up his hand which did look rather red from having slapped against the stones.

"Ouch," Maeth frowned sympathetically. "My kids used to scrape their hands and knees all the time," She remarked, while going to get a damp cloth to clean the hand with, just in case there were scrapes. "I was always telling them not to be running around in the streets, but did they listen?" She let out a little sigh, shaking her head. Then she went silent and began dabbing his hand lightly with the cloth. "Does that sting?" She asked.

"No. Thank you." He added, thinking it was considerate of her to be mindful of it stinging.

"Good." She finished up with his hand. "Now, you stay here and I'll go and fetch a healer for you." She informed him. "If you can take your boot off in the meanwhile, please do. If it hurts too much, then we'll help you with it."

"Actually," Gwestion hesitated. "Would it be possible to get my own healer, please?" He asked hopefully.

Maeth paused in the doorway and looked at him. "Your own healer?" She raised an eyebrow inquisitively.

"Well," Gwestion hesitated. "The healer who usually tends to me, when I have any sort of injury, I mean." He explained. "We are familiar with one another, is all. I just... don't feel very comfortable with.. strangers." He cleared his throat awkwardly.

"I see." Maeth nodded slowly, thinking. "Well, I can understand that. Some people do have preferred healers. You aren't the only one we've had here who was uncomfortable with strangers." She said with understanding. "Who is your usual healer, then?"

"Ms. Seri Moss," Gwestion answered. "She also is familiar with my medical history." He added, to further back up his preference to use the same healer.

Maeth paused as she thought about that name. "Ah.. the visiting healer from the North?" She asked, intrigued, to which Gwestion nodded. "Well, I'm sure that can be arranged, but she isn't due to come in until late morning." She warned him.

"I don't suppose anyone could send a message to her..?" Gwestion had to try.

Maeth considered that, looking at his foot, and back to him. "If you feel it is urgent, then I suggest you settle for the healer on duty at this time." She told him. "If you are willing to wait a few hours, then Ms. Moss will be here in the morning."

Gwestion sighed. "I realize that..." He hesitated. "But, it would ease my mind considerably if you would at least let me send a message to her." He explained. "Is that not a part of healing? Putting the patient's mind at ease?"

Maeth frowned, hands on hips. "How exactly does your mind being at ease, have anything to do with your ankle being hurt?" She asked, suspicious. She had not raised three mischievous boys and a girl, without gaining some sense of suspicion.

Gwestion shook his head slightly. "I would just feel much better if I could get a message to her. To let her know I am here."

Maeth considered for a moment. "Well. If you'd like to write down your message, I'll find someone to deliver it." She promised, although she did not promise any particular time frame. She pulled a notepad from her pocket and offered it to him, along with a pencil. Then she went over to the hearth where a pot of water was already heating, since one never knew when a tea might be needed quickly.

"Thank you." Gwestion was relieved as he took the writing tools. He paused, thinking briefly before writing a note in Ancient Sindarin, as well as he could, saying he needed to speak with Seri right away. He knew Brooke would be able to translate it, and she would also be awake regardless of what time it might be. He turned it over to the nurse. "If you would please have someone deliver that to this address right away, someone there will be awake to receive it. I would greatly appreciate it." He told her, pointing to the address he had written on the outside of the folded paper.

"Alright," Maeth nodded and slipped it in her pocket. "Now, I suggest you drink this, at least, while you're waiting on your healer to come." She had fixed up a cup of tea for him while he was writing, and now offered him the cup.

Gwestion paused, blinking tiredly at the cup. "Thank you. What is it?" He asked.

"Just a few herbs that should help with any inflammation, and soothe pain." Maeth answered. Of course, what she forgot to tell him was that the tea also would make the patient drowsy while easing their pain. "Would you prefer some honey?" She asked, ready to get some if he needed it.

"No, that's alright." He answered, shaking his head slightly. He took a very careful sip, and found that it was alright, taste-wise.

"Well, you drink all that down." Maeth instructed.

He gave a small nod to show his compliance. When the nurse made no indication that she was going to leave the room until she had seen him drink the tea, he held back a sigh and blew on the surface of his drink before taking another small sip, then another. "It's very hot," He mentioned, trying to explain why he didn't want to drink it all quickly.

"Well, it will cool enough to drink before long," She assured him. "I've got a few other patients to check on, but I'll be back soon. And if you need anything else, just call. I'll be nearby."

Gwestion wasn't sure if that was a reassurance, or a warning. He nodded as she left the room, then he ceased from sipping the tea while he waited, feeling his eyelids growing heavier. He swayed a couple of times from his seat on the edge of the treatment bed, and nearly lost his balance. His head dropped down a few times only to be jerked upright again as he caught himself dozing. Finally, he set the tea aside and rubbed his eyes, fighting the sleepiness for as long as he could.

When Maeth came back a while later, she found the patient stretched out on the bed, asleep. Shaking her head, she gently removed his boots (taking special care with the right one he had been favoring) so they would not be on the bedding, then pulled the blankets up over him, as if he were her own son. In fact, he was about the age her boy would have been...

She swallowed down the sorrow that thought brought up, and turned down the lamps before slipping out of the room to let the young man sleep. The note he had written, she would certainly send out, but not for another few hours. The person she intended to ask to deliver the message would not be here until then, and there was no one on duty right now who could be spared for sending messages that, as far as she knew, were not urgent enough to warrant it.

Healer Pele
Treatment Room – Late afternoon/evening of December 30

When Amber described the symptoms in more detail, Pele’s brow furrowed as she studied the young woman once again with more intent. She was silent for a while as she considered how to go about discussing the matter.

“I am not sure if giving up sweets would help overly much,” she finally began deciding that it was not worth beating around the bush too much. “Tell me, Amber, do you have a male friend you have been close to lately? As in… so close as to go to bed together?”

It seemed rather clear to her what might be the matter, but it was always best to have proper proof and not have to work on guesses alone.

Pele’s gaze at Seri remained thoughtful as the woman explained her experiences with losses; the blue of her eyes slightly clouded as she thought of the people lost where she had also been helpless to save them, or the ones she knew who were struggling with losses.

“Time… and care, and gentle kindness,” she agreed. “Perhaps the best cure. I am not sure if there is anything we can do medically. Perhaps besides calming herbs to alleviate the worst symptoms.”

The healer then turned the attention back to the tour: “But speaking of lighter things, there are still things I can show you. A peek into rooms we have for the patients, and then the gardens. Which would you prefer first?”

Seri - Healer of Bree
Visiting the Healers of M.T.
(a couple of days after the masquerade)

A small nod was all she had in response to Pele's comments about grief healing. Grief, and losses, was not a topic Seri enjoyed discussing very much. She had lost people she loved, in various ways. Each one affected her in a different way. And she wasn't the only one. Brooke had lost her mother, of course, which meant Seri had lost the sister she never knew about, and Aislin had endured some losses of her own. In fact, just about everyone she knew had lost someone, at some point in their life.

She was glad to have the topic brought back to lighter matters. "Oh, hmm." Seri considered the choices. "Let us see the patient rooms, and then the gardens." She decided. "Do you have many things in bloom, this time of year?" She wondered, curious about that. "It gets far too cold, up north, for most plants to survive during the winter. Evergreens are about the only ones that can withstand it." She smiled slightly. "But the winters here are apparently much milder, so I can't help wondering. But the gardens seem like it would be best saved for last."

Making sure everything was left in order after the visit, Pele guided both of them onwards again.

"Patient rooms it is then," she agreed to the further route of tour, and then added about the gardens: "No, not much in bloom, except the indoor plants, but there is enough green in spots sheltered away from the winds that may be quite cold up on this level."

Then she stopped abruptly and said: "Oh... I'll be right back!" And disappeared towards the kitchen again soon after returning with a slightly cooler version of a cinnamon bun. "A bribe for a patient whose room we will invade; though I think he'll be happy to see visitors. A lad sprained his ankle but I saw it fit to confine him here for a couple days knowing that he would not listen otherwise and would worsen his condition if let loose."

Pele then knocked on one of the doors in the patients' wing of the Houses and hearing a muffled 'hmm' swung the door open.

"Are you behaving, Delaramin?" she demanded first, stepping in, one hand on her hip as she looked at the tall, skinny boy stretched out on his bed with a book in his hand. He seemed to be some fifteen summers old. Without further ado, she walked on to hand over the 'bribe' with a grin. "I came to see if you haven't escaped yet and brought you a treat. And also a visitor, a healer, come all the way from Bree. Meet Ms Seri Moss."

The lad was about to bite into the bun, but his hand dropped as he stared at Seri. "Like... from Bree up north-wards?" he asked, his grey eyes interested. "Not from some unknown village round here?"

"Yes, from 'that' Bree," Pele confirmed as she turned to see how Seri would evaluate the room which was rather simple in its furnishings but with a window allowing for a plenty of light though heavy curtains were there to shut it out if the patient's condition required it. Besides the bed there was also a small table and a couple of chairs, and a chest of drawers for the patient's things, and not much else.

Seri - Healer of Bree
Visiting the Healers of M.T.
(a couple of days after the masquerade)

Seri waited while Pele took off abruptly to get something. When she returned, Seri smiled to hear what she had in mind. "A bribe, hm. I'll have to keep that technique in mind. Does it work well?" She asked with a little smile. "To be honest, I've used such means myself, but sort of depends on the patient whether it works or not."

As they walked into the room, Seri clasped her hands in front of her as she followed a few paces behind Pele, trying to remain quiet so not to disturb the patient or anything. But then the Gondorian healer introduced her, and she stepped forward slightly with a smile. "Hellp, Delaramin." She greeted him cheerfully. "Yes, I come from that Bree, in the North." She answered with a little amusement. "I've come here to learn a little about how the healers here do things, so when I go back home, maybe I'll have picked up a few useful things that I can use for healing people back home. How's the cinnamon roll?"

Seri & Gwestion
Dec 31, around noon
Returning to talk to another patient with a 'sprained ankle'
(Following this and this
)

She had a lot to think about after all the things that had happened today. But she also had obligations to fulfill, and so she made her way to the houses of healing after having a long talk with Dom. There was a certain patient who had especially requested her, and she hoped he might be awake by now.

Nurse Maeth had already gone for the day, so Seri asked another nurse who was on duty about the condition of the northern ranger in treatment room 3, and she was told that he was still asleep when the nurse checked on him about ten minutes ago. Seri nodded, then went to check on him, herself. She knocked softly on the door, and when she heard no answer, she stepped in.

He was indeed still asleep, but he stirred when she approached the bed. As if some sense told him that someone was approaching. Gwestion managed to force his eyes open and looked at her. "Seri." He mumbled, clearly still groggy from the tea that had put him to sleep.

Seri smiled softly and pulled up the chair beside the bed as he did. "Good morning." She said quietly. "I heard you hurt your ankle." She mentioned. "And, that wanted to talk to me, and that it was important?"

Gwestion nodded, managing to rouse himself enough to bring his thoughts back to what he and Dom had spent hours discussion. Without any idea how long he had 'dozed', Gwestion assumed that it had only been a few minutes. The curtains were drawn closed, keeping the room fairly dark, and he had no idea that beyond those curtains, the sun already shone brightly, and had been for hours. "My ankle is feeling better already," He answered, then held back a yawn. "Domanol is desperate to talk to you," He explained. "We've been trying to get up to the house for a while, but the guards had us blocked out."

Seri leaned back as he claimed his ankle was better, and listened to what he said about Domanol. She considered briefly before deciding not to mention that she had already spoken with him. "Oh?" She frowned slightly as she waited for him to go on.

"He's concerned," Gwestion rubbed his eyes, then covered a yawn that would not be suppressed. "He has reasons, but I will let him explain those." He continued, when he was able. "He wants.." He paused, trying to remember through the fog of sleepiness, what exactly he had agreed to tell her. "He wants to talk to you as soon as possible. And he wanted to know that you and the girls were safe."

Seri folded her arms as she thought about all of the information she had concerning this, and gave him a stern look. "Gwestion," She said slowly. "Did you fake an injury, just to get a chance to talk to me?" She asked suspiciously.

He paused and looked back at her for a moment, as he tried to decide whether to answer that. At last, he did. "I made a promise to a friend. And, therefore, I did whatever was necessary to fulfill that promise." He explained quietly. "I regret that the only way I could think of, was indeed, to claim an injury." He admitted then. "Although it wasn't entirely fake.. I really did twist my ankle and fall.. it just wasn't as serious as I made it out to be."

Seri looked at him for a long moment with a frown, fighting to keep any amusement from breaking through that stern expression. "Shame on you." She declared with disapproval once she had gained enough control over her expression. "I ought to make you walk back down to Lady Azrubel's house on crutches, and keep up the pretense of having a severely sprained ankle for the remainder of your time here in the city." She declared in her best 'mom' voice.

Gwestion gave a faint smile. "I already intended to do that" He assured her quietly. "It won't be for very long, but we can talk about that later." He added drowsily. "In the morning, perhaps."

Seri gave him a sympathetic smile as she realized that he didn't even realize how long he had slept already. She decided to let him keep believing it, and let him sleep a little longer if he wanted to. "Don't worry. I won't make you use crutches." She assured him in return. "You just go back to sleep and rest. Your ankle will feel a lot better by the time you wake up." She winked and stood up. "When you're ready to go, call for me, and I'll wrap it up for you." She added. "For authenticity."

Gwestion nodded slightly, struggling to keep his eyes open. "Thank you." He mumbled quietly. "Please, be sure to send word to Domanol as soon as you can? So that he may rest easy, knowing that you are safe." He asked.

Seri smiled. "I will." She promised, then slipped out of the room to let him sleep a little while longer. She closed the door behind her, shaking her head slightly. She would wrap his ankle in a poultice of sorts when he prepared to leave, but it would be comprised of things that would cause him to limp temporarily. That way, he could keep up his ruse, and also... it could serve as a bit of 'punishment' for having claimed a false injury. And none of the other healers here would have to know about it. Because she did appreciate that he was willing to go to such lengths just to try to alleviate Domanol's fears. And, knowing Gwestion as she did, she could guess that it had been a bit of a wound to his pride to have acted like he was in such pain from such an injury. So, that deserved a little leniency on her part, she figured.

With that thought in mind, she went on about her duties in the houses of healing. She had a more questions she wanted to ask Dom, but they would have to wait until they had a chance to get together later. He had asked her about going into the mountains for a bit, so that might be a good time to discuss the matter further, without the risk of being overheard.

Eryn
February - afternoon or evening
continued from here

They encountered no trouble in going up through the city. On the way, Eryn and Wist pointed out a few different places of note that they passed, but they didn't go too far out of the way, and stuck mostly to the main street that led from one level to the next, zigzagging up the mountain. As Istriel was not accustomed to the White City, Eryn guessed that the climb might be a bit much for her (100 feet from one level to the next!) and so the girls paused to rest as often as Eryn thought their new friend might need it.

All the way up to the fifth level, Wist spun, twirled, hopped, and incorporated various dance steps into her stride, and all the way she talked excitedly about the upcoming performance she hoped to be part of. She danced more than she walked. At the fifth level, they stopped at the grand entrance to the Hall of Song, where Wist said her goodbyes to them both before disappearing inside.

Afterward, Eryn and Istriel continued up to the next level, where the Houses of Healing were located. As well as the ranger headquarters, which Eryn pointed out to her new friend on the way to the Houses of Healing. "We'll try here at the Houses first, to see if she's here. If not, she'll probably be in the Ranger office or something." She explained, as they entered the building and approached the receptionist with a smile.

"Hello Miriel," She greeted the receptionist cheerfully. "Could you tell me whether Master Healer Alarion is around this evening? It's not an emergency or anything, just brought someone who'd like to meet her." She added with a motion to Istriel, blushing lightly as she remembered her very first time coming here, when she'd burst in and run to find a healer, announcing in a frantic panic that Kaylin needed immediate emercency treatment.. although she had already been treated by medics in the field. She didn't want to make that mistake again.

Istriel
February - afternoon or evening
"You are fortunate" She had said it quietly as she looked after Wist. There was something there of a strength, wrapped in joy and determination. You were lucky indeed to have a friend like that. And generous in sharing the privilege. Wist made the travel up an adventure in itself, with dance moves and enthusiasm and an endless stream of information aobut the dance that showed she at least was not out of breath before.. She was not used to the steepness, but she was strong. She appreciated the rest though and the chance to get used to.. the amount of people, and the buildings. And everything.

Istriel went.. somewhat more quiet as you pointed to the ranger headquarters and the houses of healing. She wasn't quite.. certain if she wasn't going to be just.. sent back out with a 'what were you thinking" towards Istriel. But somehow, she felt like she had to try. She shuffled in behind you, then realized she wasn't exactly making a great impression and straightened, lifting her feet just a bit as she looked around. Smiling at Miriel and greeting her happened without a thought at the very least. She saw the blush on Eryn's face and worried that she might have already done something wrong.

Treatment Room – Late afternoon/evening of December 30

She had to admit that giving up sweets wasn't a sacrifice she would have to make after all. She continued to listen to the Healer and her face turned to one of confusion as she continued with her question. And what an odd question she found it to be. Sharing her bed with a man? Why would she do that? Her tiny cot barely had enough room for herself much less another person and even much much less a man at that.

She shook her head lightly and answered. "I don't share my bed with anyone much less a man. There's simply no room to do that." She half grinned at her next thought which she saw as very amusing. "He would have to sleep atop me to have any room and I would be smothered. " She blushed a little. "Besides, I don't have any friends here, especially men, that I would share my little cot with." She shrugged her shoulders.

For a moment she wondered what her interest in her sleeping arrangements had to do with how she was feeling. "I have to wonder what my sleeping arrangements, or lack of, have to do with how I'm feeling? I don't see how the two are related but then again I'm not a Healer so??" Her fingers absently wrapped a length of thread around her left pointy finger, she was feeling a bit nervous. Maybe she had an incurable disease and she'd be sick forever? She hard swallowed at the unpleasant thought.

Healer Pele
Treatment Room – Late afternoon/evening of December 30

Pele observed Amber while the young woman – still mostly just a girl, in Pele’s mind – provided her answers.

She did not have friends here yet, which was not a good thing in and of itself, for it was not good to be friendless in a city this big. And if she did not have any male friends here, could it be…

But then again, it seemed that Amber spoke as if she had no knowledge at all of what intimate relations were. Pele held back a sigh. By rights, Amber was already old enough to know such things, but perhaps she had not been able to learn of it before being dragged away to Umbar.

“It has everything to do with your condition, Amber,” the healer began. “See… I think you might be pregnant, having a baby in you.” She cleared her throat, feeling a bit uncomfortable with the current situation as she felt around for what and how should be said. “And for that to happen, you should have been with a man.” She paused, and then asked: “Do you know how babies come to be, Amber? Has someone told you?”

Taking Seri on a tour

“Youngsters are always hungry as a rule…” Pele had half-whispered before entering the room.

Meanwhile Delaramin sat up straight in his bed, propping himself up with one arm as he held the cinnamon roll in the other, his eyes round with curiosity as he stared at Seri as if she was a walking talking miracle.

“Is that true that you could just meet our King simply sitting in a pub in Bree? I’ve heard rumours that it might be the case?” he asked the most burning question that came into his mind and then looked at the cinnamon roll when he was reminded of it. He bit eagerly into it and munched a while. “Mmmm!” he nodded his appreciation for the delicious morsel.

“Now, at least it keeps you from asking a hundred questions at once and overwhelming our visiting healer,” Pele said with a laugh. “And this is not a permission to do so, mind you. But perhaps the possibility to ask more questions might keep you here for another day or two, no?”

The receptionist looked up from the book she was reading and smiled at Eryn and the other young woman she had not met before.

“Hi, there, Eryn, and… the visitor,” she said with a light-hearted laugh. “Ah, I think Master Healer might be in the garden somewhere unless she has escaped from there without telling me that she was leaving. You can try calling her if you don’t spot her right away.”

Seri - Healer of Bree
Visiting the Healers of M.T.
(a couple of days after the masquerade)

A grin met Pele's comment about youngsters always being hungry. She knew that quite well, having raised a daughter, who had her friend over all the time... and now she had her two nieces who were still at that age, and not to mention all the patients she had tended to over the years.

She was rather amused at the amazement on the face of this particular youngster, as if she were some sort of legend come to life. She laughed softly at his question. "Indeed, he used to frequent the Prancing Pony inn," Seri answered with a nod, smiling faintly. "Mr. Butterbur, the innkeeper, had no idea who he was." She supposed she could understand the young man's intrigue and curiosity about such a matter. In fact, she herself had been a little surprised when it came out who 'Strider' really was. "And look at you, living here in the city where the King rules! And currently only one level below where he is," Seri pointed out, as if this were far more impressive than her own thing.

Eryn
February - afternoon or evening

Eryn also laughed lightly, when Miriel's wording made her realize she hadn't offered any sort of introduction. "Sorry, this is Istriel." She clarified, smiling. "And Istriel, this is Miriel, she operates the desk at least half the time. If you don't find her here, you'll probably find Ralf." She added.

"Alright then!" Eryn went on, in regard to the answer about where Pele might be. "We'll check the garden! Thank you, Miriel." She smiled and turned to Istriel. "This way, we can find Pele, and I can show you the gardens, too." She said with a happy smile. It was colder up here on the sixth, but there would still be some things growing out there, though most would surely be dormant for the winter. "It's really much prettier in the spring time," She informed her as they headed for the door that led to the gardens, "But it is still nice. And some of the patients like to.get out fresh air, so it's nice that they can do that." She thought of her father, in fact, and how he would absolutely hate being stuck in a treatment room for any length of time. Having gardens nearby had been helpful to him when he'd had to come here for regular appointments.

Once outside, Eryn cast her gaze around carefully, trying to spot Pele, and wondered if she would end up having to call for her. After a moment's thought, Eryn smiled slightly and then paused and made a whistle that sounded a lot like a particular kind of bird, a signal which she had been learning from her father, although that kind of bird was not really very common to find around here in the winter months. She was pretty sure that Pele ought to have heard her doing that whistle before, or maybe she'd heard Duinion doing it before, but her hope was that the ranger captain would hear and recognize it, and come to see what it was about. That was far more fun than simply calling for her, after all.

Istriel
February - afternoon or evening

Istriel nodded politely to the lady. Receptionist. Woman. She spoke so well and seemed so confident. She inclined her head towards Miriel as she greeted her as 'visitor' then a second time once Eryn introduced her. There was a smile that was somewhat shy. She'd gotten used to Eryn and Wist, at the inn, over a cup of hot chocolate and with the incredible energy of both of them at her back, but now, in the midst of the houses of healing and among other grown ups, she all of a sudden felt shy. She did manage a 'pleased to meet you', before Eryn led her outside. And there she exhaled again.

"It's a nice garden.." she murmured glancing around but not seeing anyone. Then Eryn's smile lit up and she made that sound, a bird whistle? "Is that a ranger sign? Or a Healer sign? or..." She had no idea what the call was about but she clearly knew it was intentional. She looked around more openly. The gardens were larger than she had thought at first. Larger than she had expected this high in the city. It would be good for patients as you said to be able to come out, sit in the sunshine, breath the air. Within her mind, she started to name what she could of the plants she saw. It would definitely be easier in spring, but leaf shape would tell her somethings and she was familiar with most of what grew in the area.

Reception

A shy boy of probably not more than 11 years came into the Houses of Healing. The young lad was hiding his right arm and hand in his coat. He shivered when he looked around. He had never been here before and had planned on keeping it that way. In fact, he was pretty sure about not coming today either. But behind him, a little girl with braids showed up and she was looking quite determined. She pushed him a little bit further to the desk.
'I really don't think this is necessary, Giluen', the boy whispered in a last attempt to get out.
'I think it is', Borlas', the girl answered. 'There's nothing to be scared of.'
'I am not scared! And it's all your fault anyway!' The boy turned on his heels and lifted his arm to push the girl back. He then winced and cried out with a painful 'ouch!'.
'You see? That's what we are here for. And I said I was sorry... didn't I?'' The girl firmly stepped up to the desk and approached Miriel. 'Can you help us, please?''

Master Healer Pele Alarion (and also Delaramin)
Taking Seri on a tour

The young lad, Delaramin, seemed eager for stories, yet he no longer forgot the treat brought to him either and has quickly devoured it as if he was famished and as if the staff of the Houses of Healing had not fed him for a week.

“So rad!” he thought of walking into an inn and just sitting down for a chat with the King, though he was aware that Aragorn was not a king just then. And then he sighed and grumbled: “Yeah, he’s here, but that one level might as well be the whole length of Middle-Earth, though they say he and the Queen do come among the public, in normal circumstances. I’ve only seen them from afar on solemn occasions.”

“Well, you never know, Delaramin, you never know…” Pele put in, “You might just end up running into them one day as they take a stroll.” Though she was not sure if the King and the Queen did actually go for a simple walk on lower levels of the city for that might turn out rather… interesting… soon enough.

“Shall we continue our tour?” she then turned to Seri. “And leave the young man here to his getting well and daydreaming.”

“I ain’t no daydreaming, Master Healer!” the lad did object to such a description. “And I feel well enough…” But he did not finish his last sentence when he saw ‘the look’ on Pele’s face.

Gardens

The whistle-call took Pele slightly by surprise, and she turned her head in the direction the sound came from and saw two girls standing there; she recognised Eryn and supposed it was her who had whistled for she knew of no birds here in the garden that would have that call. However, this now put her in a slightly awkward situation. She could see the girls, and so she assumed that if she responded or simply started to move they would spot her right away since the trees did not have enough foliage to hide her. It would probably not increase her reputation as a Master Healer to be climbing trees… But come down she would since it would be best to learn what the matter was.

After a moment of consideration, she whistled back, though it was a simple double whistle and no bird call, and then she swiftly climbed down the tree at the top of which she had been sitting.

“Well, young ladies,” she said upon approaching the two girls. “What is so important that you disturb me from my birding experiences?” The somewhat mischievous grin spread up to her eyes, lighting a merry spark there. “This time of year is perfect for taking stock of any unnoticed nests in the garden,” she explained. “There is a new crow nest there,” she motioned towards the tree she had been caught sitting in.

Reception

Miriel observed the two children since the very moment they stepped into domain she was responsible for though she did not interfere with their disagreement, apparently about the necessity to come here at all.

“I might help,”
she responded once the girl spoke to her directly. “Can you give me a short story of what happened with the arm?”

Reception

The boy looked Miriel and shivered again.
"Do you promise not to say anything to Mom?" he asked. 'She said that we were not allowed to play with a knife, but I thought it was possible. I'm already 11! And it wasn’t playing at first, we wanted to make something beautiful out of wood, for her birthday. It wasn't a big knife either... And it went really well. At least it did until Gilaen came up with another plan...'
The girl took a step forward and looked guiltily at the ground.
'When Borlas was done carving the wood, I said that we could probably keep the knife for a while. And then we went to play that I was Lady Éowyn, and Borlas was the Witchking. And then I shouted 'I am no man' and then I guess I accidentally hit him with the knife...'
'We made sure we dressed the wound quickly, because mom wasn't allowed to know. And it stopped bleeding pretty soon. But that was two days ago now and it continues to hurt so much. And it looks like this...'
Borlas stretched out his arm and rolled up his sleeve. On his forearm was an ugly, deep cut that was tended to with a not too clean piece of torn fabric. The wound was no longer bleeding, but the skin around it was fiery red and swollen.

She heard that answering whistle, and could follow the direction at the very least. She looked to the left but didn't see anything. Until she spotted movement. High. higher than she had expected. They were expecting a person, right ? Not a.. no, that was definitely a person. A person who climbed down and then approached them, asking what was important enough to disturb her birding. She understood the desire to see what was nesting, and what might be trying to steal all the seeds you were just putting down, though thought might be more of a thing for full spring. Still.. some things may needed to be planted early. She tried to stand up a straight as she could, glancing from the person who had been in the tree to Eryn as if she wasn't quite sure if SHE should be talking first, or if Istriel would need to.

in this case, she decided that perhaps a .. certain amount of boldness was appropriate, though boldness wasn't exactly her strongest side, at least not among strangers. She was good at.. doing what needed to be done? Was that a skill? She was strong. She was healthy.

"Good afternoon, I am Istriel" It was said with a small, polite inclination of the head, enough for respect, not so much that it would look as if she was bowing. "I am new to the City. And I am looking to start training. Eryn told me you might be able to help me get started."

She glanced aside as discretely as possible to her new friend to see if she had said all that right.

Seri - Healer of Bree
Visiting the Healers of M.T.
(a couple of days after the masquerade)

Seri couldn't help but grin a little at the young man's enthusiasm about the idea of the king having frequented a local establishment. She wondered what he would think if he knew how many of the locals had treated the man who would later be revealed as their king. She also wondered how much he may have changed, since becoming the king, marrying his beloved, and settling in the capital of Gondor. She wondered if she'd even recognize him anymore, but she also had to agree that Delaramin was probably right; seeing the king and his queen wandering about the streets was probably not very likely. However, Seri decided maybe she would ask Dom if he was much changed, or still just the same as the Breefolk would remember him.

"Yes, that sounds lovely." Seri answered Pele, smiling. "I hope you get better soon, Delaramin." She added, before she followed Pele from the room to continue their tour.

Eryn
February - afternoon or evening

Eryn grinned at her new friend. "More of a ranger thing, I suppose," She answered her question, before she turned to seek the source of the replying whistle. She spotted Pele coming out of a tree, which didn't seem the least bit odd to Eryn. She and her dad both climbed trees, and it simply seemed normal for a ranger to do. "Sorry to disturb you," She answered, although she caught the hint of teasing in her tone. "The crows are stealing any medical tools, are they?" She asked, curious what Pele may have found in that crow's nest.

She smiled encouragingly at Istriel as the other girl give her own introduction. "She was undecided whether she'd have more interest in training to be a ranger, or to be a healer." Eryn added, to give Pele more context. "So, I told her I knew the perfect person to meet, to help her with either option." She explained with a little grin. "Istriel, this is Pele Alarion, Captain of the Gondorian Rangers, as well as Master Healer of the Houses of Healing." She completed the introductions.

Amber w/Healer Pele
Treatment Room – Late afternoon/evening of December 30

@Pele Alarion

Ambers head tilted to the left as she wrapped her mind around the Healers words. Pregnant? Having a baby? "Wellll..I know my Mother was with child when I was about seven." Her words coming slow as she connected the dots in her mind. Been with a man? A man?...A man! She straightened up as she let our a small gasp, her amber eyes looking straight ahead as the memory of one man came into focus.

She buried her face in her hands. Shaking her head over and over. "No. No. No." The muffled words came out. "It can't be, there was no bed!" Her muffled words cleared as she lowered her hands and looked at the Healer.
Tears were pooling in her amber eyes as she continued. She suddenly felt cold and wrapped her arms tightly around herself. "He was cruel. I tried to fight him but he had my throat. " Her hand rubbed her throat at the memory. "I must have passed out cause I woke up on the floor of my cell. I don't know how long I was there." Her voice trailed off as the tears traced down her cheek.

She looked at the Healer, searching her eyes. "Help me, I don't know what to do."

Healer Pele
Treatment Room – Late afternoon/evening of December 30

It seemed that something clicked for Amber, and Pele watched the girl intently, waiting for anything she would like to reveal.

“Was it Dahak?” she asked gently, though anger burned furiously in her and demanded revenge for harm done to this innocent soul. Perhaps the time of reckoning would come, but currently it was more important to bring healing if she could.

She came to sit down beside Amber on the cot and reached over to place one hand on the nearest arm, as she gently wiped off some of the tears with the other hand.

“Sometimes no bed is needed, a man and a woman – and that’s it,” she said, and then fell silent to consider how to go about this. It was still unclear if Ava’s people were Amber’s parents, so meanwhile she could try to parent her… “I can make sure you stay in good health, give you support and advice if you need some,” she said. “How have you managed to provide for yourself this far, Amber? And…” She paused again before asking quietly: “Would you be able to love this child?”

“What do you think of the Houses this far, Seri?” Pele asked as she led the way out of the building and into the gardens. “It might take a while to get used to it and not get lost in the hallways.”

She took to the cobbled path with determination though not with haste.

“There is not much green and growing in winter, but some durable plants are still resisting the cold,” she said, motioning towards a sheltered corner where some leeks and parsley stalks still showed a sign of life. “These are mostly for the kitchen needs, though we usually buy food in bulk. But there’s nothing like a few fresh things of our own.”

“And then the path leads away among the trees towards the wall where we can look out over the city and the fields below, even to the river,” she said, looking at Seri. “Do you feel like walking there or should we return to the houses without spending half an hour wandering around the gardens? Though I could take that long to show you all nooks and crannies and out-of-the-way hiding spots.”

“Well met, Istriel,” Pele responded when the unknown girl introduced herself. “Training as in…”

She did not get to wonder long what training exactly Istriel had in mind because Eryn provided further information.

“No, I did not find medical tools in the nest, though I did find a couple of coins,” she responded to the birding question first, and then returned to the training matter now that she had more information.

“A ranger or a healer, hmm?” she said, a small smile lingering on her face. “I would suggest avoiding delving deep into both; though I have done just that. Very demanding. So…” Pele tilted her head as she looked at the two young ladies. “Should we take a walk or head back indoors to discuss this?”

Miriel’s eyebrows furrowed and she breathed a quiet “oh my” when she heard the story and saw the injury.

“You know, Borlas, if I were your mother I would appreciate knowing what has happened to you. I don’t think you should hide this from her. Though… I also think you two might get into trouble afterwards,” she said as she slowly shook her head. “But come, sit down you two, and I will go and look for a healer so that the arm can be fixed.”

She eyed the two children and wondered if they would not escape after what she had said about telling the mother.

“You know… this really looks bad, so sit and don’t even think about leaving before healer can see you. You wouldn’t want to lose you arm, right?”

She pointed them to the row of chairs by one of the walls and set off in search of a healer.

Seri - Healer of Bree
Visiting the Healers of M.T.
(a couple of days after the masquerade)

"They're lovely," Seri answered. "I can't help but be a little jealous, but then again, Bree doesn't need a facility this large." She grinned slightly. "Still, I think it would be a nice idea to plant a little garden in the back of my clinic, when I get home." She decided, smiling at the thought of it. She'd be able to plant useful herbs, so that whenever she needed something, she could just grab it as she needed.

"Your garden here is very nice, and I look forward to seeing it all." She declared, then considered the question. "But, perhaps another time." She suggested. "I don't want to take up too much of your time, I realize you must be busy." She felt as if she had taken up a lot of the master healer's time, by now. "I think, if I'm going to start working here temporarily, I'll need to establish my schedule," She added. "Who should I speak to about that?"

February - afternoon or evening

Eryn smiled at the response to her question about the crow's nest, but then she kept quite while the healer directed her next question toward Istriel. Since this was all for Istriel's benefit, Eryn let her make the next decision. There wasn't really much for Eryn to say, now, so she just tucked her hands into her coat pockets and let her new friend talk with Pele.

Seri had some paperwork she was bringing up to the reception, so that everything could be filed properly away. She was looking for Miriel, so she could give them to her. So, she wasn't expecting to find her in the hallway. As Seri was walking briskly toward the reception room, she nearly collided with the receptionist as they both came around a corner from opposite directions. "Oh! Sorry, are you alright?" She asked, after hastily sidestepping to avoid running into her.

Thankfully, she didn't drop any of her stack of papers, so she was glad about that. But it looked like Miriel was on a mission of some sort, and was leaving her desk. "Not to delay you, but could you tell me quickly, where I should put all these papers and things?" She asked, hoping to get a quick answer before Miriel went on about her mission.

Istriel
February - afternoon or evening
Istriel had been holding her breath for a moment. Now it was here, the moment that was born from an impulsive decision. Not to seek something new, no. That had been determined long ago, and then she'd tried, failed and tried again. And this time she would succeed. She was determined. Shy perhaps because the place was so big and everything was a new path, but that path would be of her own choosing. She nodded before she found voice, but she did find her voice. If she wanted to make a different life, she needed to dare make bold choices. And bold choices required her to stand straight and actually do the things, and in this case, that meant answering the Master Healer who was also the ranger captain..

"I would like to try both. Not to become a Master Healer, but perhaps to learn enough that I could help if.. things go wrong, and there's a fight and people are hurt? And yes, I would like to talk through it, either on a walk or inside, as you wish. I am strong. And my aunt says I am smart. I am a hard worker and if I commit to something I see it through."
Of course what she had committed to in the past were fairly mundane, normal things in her village, but they had not necessarily been easy. No one who harvested under the hot sun would say it was easy. No one who would put up enough vegetables and food to get through the winter and made sure everything was preserved well would say it was easy. She knew she could manage if she put her mind to it. Despite the tone, despite the conviction in it, she glanced at Eryn to make certain she had said things right.

Borlas and Gilaen, patiently waiting at the reception

Miriel's kind words were too much for Borlas, who had kept his chin up so far. Tears suddenly welled up in his eyes. He shook his head furiously. He wasn't allowed to cry, he was a big boy, wasn't he? He bit his lip until he tasted blood.
"I won’t be going anywhere," he assured Miriel before she left. 'I feel too horrible anyway...'

When the receptionist was gone, Gilaen looked at her big brother with wide eyes.
'What do you think, should we tell mom? She didn't notice anything in the past few days, did she? You wore long sleeves all the time. If the Healer has tended to it properly, then you can keep it hidden, right? I'll do your chores if fetching water and feeding the pigs is too heavy.'
Her brother wasn’t so sure of this. 'As if mom wouldn’t notice that. We always fight over our chores, don’t we? And the day after tomorrow is bathing day, then she will see it for sure. I certainly can't sit in the tub with my clothes on, can I?!'
'But you will be feeling better in two days, right? And that arm will have been dressed properly. Maybe you can just say that you had fallen? Just on the street, while playing tag?'
Borlas shrugged his shoulders and grimaced. 'Ouch...'

Both children were silent for a moment.
"Do you think that lady meant it?" Gilaen then asked with a doubtful look on her face. 'What she said at the end?'
'What did she say?' Borlas had not listened carefully.
"Something about you risking to lose your arm," Gilaen whispered in awe. "What if they have to take your arm off! I bet you won’t be able to keep that a secret from mom..."
Borlas suddenly felt nauseous. He closed his eyes and leaned back, taking shallow breaths in and out.
'Are you okay?' His sister jumped up from the bench. 'Your face is awfully pale...'
Worried, she looked around. Where was everyone?
‘Hello? Is anyone there?’

Master Healer Pele Alarion
Taking Seri on a tour

“I’m sure you wouldn’t need so many rooms and a garden the size of Bree itself,” Pele laughed softly. “It’s quite a hassle, and many staff are needed to keep everything in working order. But suppose a small garden is always a good thing, even if it consists of a couple boxes of herbs indoors on the sunniest windowsill.”

She looked down the path that led into the depths of the garden that looked more inviting than ever and then turned back to Seri. “You know, your visit has been a welcome break in everyday duties but suppose I should not turn it into an all-day outing,” she said with a small cheeky grin.

“As for the schedule, we could either set one up now, or if you would rather return tomorrow to tackle the specific details, I could notify healer Linaiwe – she is almost always here. Or the head nurse Angelica. They mostly run day-to-day business here when I’m off doing ranger business.”

“As I wish?” Pele’s blue eyes glinted with laughter that she managed to hold back otherwise. “There is another nest I would like to check on, so walk with me for a bit, young ladies.” She turned to follow a path while she listened to the account Istriel gave of herself.

“I insist that all of my Rangers know at least some basic healing, so the two are not necessarily opposite,” she explained to Istriel. “Being strong and smart is needed in both of vocations, and so is ability to work hard and keep commitments.”

Pele then stopped for a while to face Istriel.

“I suppose the question would rather be where you heart is? Would you rather spend your days tending to patients, fighting illnesses, protecting their lives, but yes… also possibly emptying chamber pots and cleaning up all kinds of messes,” she motioned towards where the Houses stood. “Or would you rather invest yourself in building your physical fitness and fighting skills to use in protecting people? Spending days in training – through mud and rain, in the heat of the sun, learning discipline, learning to work in a team and obey the orders given.”

She tilted her head ever so slightly as she observed the young woman in the crossroads of life to see whether she would be able to choose on the spot or if she would need more time to think. She did also glance at Eryn occasionally, being aware that while the girl had chosen healing she might as well make a good warrior.

Miriel, the Receptionist
Hallway, Running into Seri while searching for a healer

There was almost a collision in the hallway, though it was averted by Seri’s quick reflexes and Miriel coming to a quick halt and turning towards the healer.

“I am certainly all right, Ms Seri,” the receptionist replied, “But I also have a counter-question. Are you available for a healing job at the moment? I would much rather take this stack of papers from you than try to figure out how to treat a patient.”

Even as she reached out for the said papers, Miriel quickly explained the situation that would await her at the reception.

“There’s a young boy with a nasty stab wound on his arm – that is, it is not raw but it definitely looks infected. I came to look for a healer who could take on this young patient,” she provided the few details she knew. “There’s a girl with him, but she is unharmed. Apparently, they have not told anything to his mum. Or maybe theirs.”

Seri - Healer of Bree
Visiting the Healers of M.T.
(a couple of days after the masquerade)

"I don't know about the size of Bree," Seri laughed lightly. She tried to imagine a garden the size of the entire city of Bree, and smiled at the thought of it. "This is a large garden, but not quite that big." She smiled. "Perhaps, someday, you can come visit Bree, and then I'll show you around." She thought that would be fun. And she could understand it being a welcome break, and grinned back at Pele. "I'm glad that I was able to give you a break."

She took a moment to think about what she'd rather do concerning schedules. "I think, perhaps, I'll come back tomorrow. I'll bring my niece, Aislin. She's been learning from me, as an apprentice. Perhaps she could learn along with your apprentices here, if that would be alright." She added. "We can work out the schedule details when we come back tomorrow. Sound good?"

Eryn
February - afternoon or evening

Eryn smiled with a nod in answer to Pele suggesting they walk to the other nest. "If you'd like, I could climb up to look at the nest?" She offered. "Unless you just want to do the climbing." She wouldn't want to deprive anyone of an activity they enjoy doing, after all, but she wasn't sure if Pele did enjoy climbing trees. Eryn did, but she had no idea about other people.

As they walked, she went quiet to let the other two talk together for a bit, to let Pele speak to Istriel. When there was a bit of a pause, she spoke up, "You could also do like me," She suggested to Istriel. "I'm learning all that I can about healing now, so that when I do enlist with the rangers later on, I'll already be pretty good at it, and then at least one of the skills I have to pass, won't take me as long." She grinned slightly at the cleverness of her plan. She wished she didn't have that agreement with her father about waiting until she's eighteen, but she wouldn't back out of it. She only had about a year and a half left to go before she'd be able to call herself a ranger recruit. And she figured it wouldn't take her long to get to the next stage, from there. So, his plan of delaying her was not exactly going the way he probably hoped.

Seri Moss

"Available? Sure, what's going on?" Seri asked, listening attentively as the receptionist explained the matter. While she listened, she turned over the stack of papers and then nodded. "Yes, that might not be the best time to try and learn," She agreed with a little smile.

Although her smile faded as she considered the wounds described to her. "Stab wound? On a child?" She asked, a little bit baffled and concerned by that. "Well. Let's go and see what it's all about." She decided with a little nod. With that, she strode toward the reception area wearing a little smile as she entered, about the time the girl was calling out to ask if anyone was there.

"I'm here." Seri assured her, smiling kindly at the pair. She kneeled down to be eye level with them. "I'm Seri, what are your names?" She asked them both, then nodded toward the boy's arm. "What happened here?" She asked. "Can I take a look? See how bad it is?"

Reception - Borlas and Gilaen

Both children looked up upon the arrival of Seri. Borlas didn’t quite know what to think of this lady, who seemed very kind, but spoke with a strange accent he had never heard before. But he didn’t feel well enough to ask any curious questions about it.
With a sigh he pulled up his sleeve so she could see his arm, and looked at this little sister.

Gilaen seemed to get the clue, cleared her throat and spoke up.
‘My name is Gilaen and this is my brother Borlas. He’s eleven and I am nine. We live in the city. And well, we… he… he got hurt. The day before yesterday.’ All of a sudden, she became shy, and stared at her toes.
‘It was a dumb accident really’, she continued while fidgeting with her skirt. ‘I took the knife from the kitchen and Borlas cut a beautiful little flower figure from it, for our mom. She works so hard, and it’s almost her birthday. We’re not supposed to use that knife, but it went really well. He’s good at wood carving, you know!’

This well meant compliment brought a little smile on Borlas’ face.
His sister bit her lip. She shifted from one foot to the other and spoke a bit softer now.
‘But then I thought it would be a great game to play Lady Éowyn and the Witchking, just for a little while. So I didn’t bring the knife back to the kitchen. We pretended it was a sword and I only wanted to play that I was stabbing him, but I stumbled, and I hurt him really bad… I’ve really done my best dressing the wound so mom wouldn’t have to see it. She can be horribly mad when we do stupid things you know. And it would ruin the surprise of the gift we wanted to give her. But you see, it's been two days now and Borlas never started to feel any better...'
'It's only more painful every day,' her brother added to her words. He stretched out his arm to show the Healer. 'It's just red, and it's warm, and swollen. And I can't really touch it without it hurting even more.'
'So that’s why we came here to see if anyone could help…' Gilaen went on. She looked Seri right in the eyes now. 'Can you help ma'am? Please?’

Seri Moss

Seri listened to the girl speaking for her brother, and gave a little nod. "I see. Well, Borlas, would you come with me so we can clean up your arm? Then I'll take a look at it. You can come too, Gilaen." She smiled at the girl as she straightened. "I'll do all that I can. You certainly did the right thing coming to find a healer." She assured them. If they would come along with her, she would talk while she walked, leading the way toward a treatment room where she could clean the boy's arm.

"Do you know why your mother didn't want you to play with the knives, now?" She asked with a more serious look at them each. "I hope you do. Because accidents like this can happen too easily when you don't know how to use knives safely." She offered a reminder, in case they hadn't made the connection already. She thought for a moment. "I can see why you wouldn't want to tell her, of course," She added sympathetically. "How long until your mother's birthday?" She wondered, glancing at Gilaen for an answer, since she seemed to do most of the talking.

"I'm sure she'll love the flower you made, Borlas." Seri smiled at him. "What sort of flower is it? Can you tell me about it while I clean your wound?" She asked with curiosity.

February - afternoon or evening

She had walked along with the master healer-captain, the way she thought of Pele in her mind, as they spoke about the nest and then paused as they did. Then the question came and for a moment only her mind went blank. Luckily just for a moment again. This was not the time to look like a lackwit.

"I am not afraid of hard work. I've worked on the fields with my family so I am not a stranger to hard work, nor to wet clothes and sleepless nights and work till my muscles strain. And I am not a stranger to tending to children and to help with cuts and bruises, like any housewife does. I know that's not the same as being a healer. But if I can.. if you would allow me, I would train at both and see where not just my heart lies but my skill. My aunt used to say that a bird may love the sun as much as it wants' that doesn't mean it's job isn't to look for worms in the mud. If one duty interferes too much with another, I will step aside of course, but I would like to at least try both, in any way you deem fit, and see where I am needed most."

She paused a moment, organizing her thoughts and then looked up, looking fully at Pele. "When my sister came home in tears because there were two boys who wanted to marry her, her my aunt asked her which of them was her best friend. And then Annissa said neither of them was her friend! So she told her to make friends with both of them and then decide which one she wanted to marry. She was also just nine at the time, so I don't think my aunt was worried. But she did marry one of them, only it was a decade later. I guess.. " She realized all of a sudden that that may have sounded flippant, but she didn't mean to " I guess I am asking if I can be friends with both boys before I decide which one to marry?"

She glanced at Erys, suddenly worried. That explanation may have made sense where she came from, but did it sound too stupid here in the big city? She knew trying out two things at the same time would be more work. But she'd never been afraid of work. Only of boredom. And this.. this would not be boring. She could help people, by being strong, by defending them, and perhaps it would be a good thing if she knew what to do if she couldn't defend them against everything.

Borlas and Gilaen
Walking from reception with Seri Moss

The two children followed Seri Moss away from reception to another part of the Houses of Healing.
Both of them nodded timidly when she asked them if they knew now, why they weren't allowed to play with a knife.
'Yes ma'am', Borlas added to his nodding. For sure he knew he wouldn't let his little sister play with anything sharp until she was at least twice his age!
Gilaen opened her mouth, but shut it again, feeling very silly all of a sudden.
She lightened up a bit when the Healer continued about how she could understand they didn't want their mom to know. By the time Seri had asked about their mother's birthday, a wide grin appeared on the young girl's face.
'Her birthday is next week! And by then our father might be back too, he is away selling some of his wood work right now. He makes furniture, and toys from wood.'
'Dad is a very good craftsman', Borlas added. 'I want to be like him, when I grow up. I am already helping him out in the workshop when he's not away. I sure hope my arm won't hurt anymore by the time he is back, so I can work with him again!'

Upon that last question, Borlas frowned a bit. 'Do you have to clean it? I guess that's going to burn, isn't it? I am not sure if I can talk while I am gritting my teeth...'

Seri Moss
visiting healer of Bree

Seri was relieved that the kids agreed that they knew not to play with knives anymore. "Yes, maybe the next time you want to play out battle scenes, use a pretend knife." She suggested. "You can always use your imaginations. Sticks make wonderful swords, you know." She smiled at the memory of her daughter always playing those sorts of games. Either alone, or with her friend Darius, but regardless, she had eventually learned to use a sword very well and had gone on to become a ranger.

She smiled at how the girl brightened when she told her when their mother's birthday was, but she was also a bit thoughtful. Next week. That was several days of trying to hide the boy's injury. Still, the way they brightened at the thought of their father coming home. And she was surprised to hear about his occupation. "Really?" She asked, while getting some water and soap ready. "I'd love to see some of the things your father has made, sometime." She filled the basin with warm water and smiled a little sadly. "That's what my father did, too." She wished she could have met him, seen his work, and watched him craft some of the things he had made. But she had never had the opportunity, sadly. "It sounds like you've already learned a lot from him, if you were able to make that pretty flower for your mother, all by yourself." She added.

Taking in a deep breath, Seri turned to look seriously at Borlas as he asked if she had to clean his arm. "Yes, I'm afraid so, Borlas." She said sympathetically. "See, there's little bits of dirt and things that gets into wounds, and if you don't clean them out well enough, it can cause your wounds to get worse instead of better. That's what we call an infection," She explained, trying to make it simpler for the kids to understand. "See how your arm's gotten all red, and warm, and swollen? That's a sign that it's gotten infected. And if you don't get it good and clean, then it will get a lot worse." She looked at the boy very seriously to make sure that he understood what she was about to say. "When an infection gets bad enough, the only way to stop it from killing you is to actually cut off the infected limb, Borlas." She spoke simply, but seriously, so he would know that this was very important. "I imagine it might be difficult to do wood carving and things, with only one arm, don't you think?"

"It doesn't look like it's gotten very bad yet," She offered some comfort immediately after. "We will clean your arm, and put some bandages on it. But you will need to have your bandage changed properly, at least once a day. Maybe more, but we'll see. So, we'd better get your wound washed, and I promise to be as gentle as I can with it. It might sting a little, yes, but just think if it this way. When it stings, that means that the soap is fighting all those nasty dirt bits, right? That's how you know the soap is doing its job." She smiled encouragingly. "So, let's roll up your sleeve a bit more, so it doesn't get wet, alright?"

Borlas and Gilaen with Seri Moss in a treatment room

"Really?" Gilaen asked curiously. 'Is your father also a furniture maker? Does he sell a lot of stuff?'
She completely missed the past tense that the Healer had used. Borlas had noticed it and poked his sister in her side, which resulted in an 'ouch' from both of them.
"Hey!" sputtered Gilaen. 'Why are you doing that!'
"She said was’, Borlas lowered his voice. 'Maybe her father is so old that he doesn't work anymore'.
His sister looked as if she was calculating how old Seri could be.
'Or even worse…’ Borlas now whispered. ‘What if he's gone... or he has died...'

Startled, Gilaen peeked at Seri, but the girl couldn't read anything from the Healer's face. She was happy that the conversation continued about toys.
'We always play with sticks... and dad even made swords for us," she responded to Seri's idea. 'It was so stupid of us to take that knife this time...'
"It certainly was," muttered Borlas. 'I hope dad doesn't say that I can't help or carve wood for the time being... it would be an awful punishment.'

He shuddered when Seri started her serious monologue. So, people could really lose their arm after wounding it... and it wasn't a joke just now, when Gilaen said she had heard something like that. Just like earlier, he felt nauseous and for a moment all he wanted was for their mother to be there.
He took a deep breath, and then another one. Gilaen looked up at Seri and assured her:
"If dad ever gets a wound, I will tell him to go to the Houses of Healing as soon as possible. And make sure that he doesn’t wait too long. And if you can teach me, I could perhaps clean the bandages every day?''
Borlas shook his head.
'I think I'd rather have mom do that... we'll need to tell her anyway if I am all up in bandages.'
Seri had meanwhile prepared the things needed to clean the infected arm. Borlas took one more deep breath, rolled up his sleeve and put his arm forward. Then he turned his head away and tried to focus his mind on the fresh smell of soap, which reminded him of holidays at their grandmother's.
'Okay. I'm ready.'

Seri Moss
visiting healer of Bree

Seri smiled faintly at the girl's question. "He.. did make furniture, and a lot of other things. And he sold them, yes." She answered. Then, she couldn't help overhearing their whispered words about it, and she was debating whether to say anything else about it, but then they moved on to talking about the swords their father had made. "Oh, that sounds like fun," She smiled, wishing that her daughter could've had something like that from her grandfather, to play with. "A lot more fun than this, I bet," She added, nodding to Borlas' injury. As for his father maybe not letting him help, as punishment, Seri looked at him thoughtfully. "Do you think that would be a fair punishment, for what you did?" She asked him, curious if what his own assessment would be about that. "Breaking the rules, letting your little sister play with a knife.." She listed. "You are.. eleven, right? And you're nine, isn't that what you said?" She asked Gilaen, before turning back to the boy. "Big brothers are supposed to keep their younger siblings from harm. You are supposed to set an example. I hope, next time, you'll think about things like that before you go breaking rules." She paused though, deciding maybe she shouldn't lecture too much. They weren't her kids, after all, but she did hope that maybe they had learned something important from all of this.

"Learning how to treat wounds is always a good idea." She agreed with Gilaen, while thinking about her request to teach her, but before she had given a response, Borlas said he'd rather have his mother do it. "Hm, well, to have her do it, you'd have to first tell her you were injured." Seri pointed out. "Maybe there's a way you could tell her about it, without spoiling your surprise. What do you think?" She asked, waiting patiently while he gathered his nerve to let her wash the wound.

Once he declared he was ready, Seri nodded and began to wash the wound gently, trying her best not to cause him any further pain. "If you'd like, maybe I could go with you to tell your mother," She suggested. "Do you think that would help, or do you think you'd rather tell her about it yourselves?" She thought it might be a good idea to speak to their mother, herself, so that she could ensure that their mother knew how to tend to the boy's arm, but if they didn't want her to come, she would just write down all of the instructions. Maybe she should do that, anyway, just in case.

Master Healer Pele Alarion
Taking Seri on a tour

“A visit to Bree is definitely tempting, though I am not sure when I will have the next opportunity of a very long vacation,” Pele said, thinking that it was very unlikely to happen for another year at least. Besides, who knew if she’d even return from the Umbar mission.

When Seri said she would prefer to return the next day, together with Aislin, the Master Healer nodded. “All right. Do bring your niece by all means, and if I am not here, ask around for the head nurse or one of the senior healers. They will set you both up with a schedule, so you can reap all the benefits from being here.”

She then turned back towards the Houses.

“It would be great to work alongside you on some project or other, but I will see what I can do in this regard,” she noted thoughtfully.

Pele listened carefully to reasoning and stories Istriel set before her, and a small smile played on her lips.

“Your aunt is a wise woman,” she gave her assessment, “And apparently the arrangements worked excellently.”

She looked up at the tree the branches of which hid the nest she was interested and then turned back to the topic at hand.

“But it might not work that well in your situation. It might turn out difficult to sit on two chairs at once equally comfortably in this case,” she said and then explained further, “The King’s Rangers are not the usual military unit, so it would mean that once you decide to join, you take an oath and head straight into a full-time training. And that means that if you wish to learn more of healing than the basic things all Rangers know, you will have to learn it in any spare time you can find.”

She looked at Eryn and added: “Eryn here might have chosen a good strategy; but you have to see for yourself if it fits you or not, Istriel. If you do decide to join the Rangers, there is, of course, an option to opt out if you find that it is not something you would wish to pursue. Everything depends on how much free time you would like to have on your hands.”

Pele did remember Eryn’s offer to visit the bird nest and mentioned: “Eryn, you can climb up, if you will. Check if the nest has been used for the last season, if there’s anything valuable there that shouldn’t be.”

Borlas and GilaenIn a treatment room with Seri Moss

During Seri's serious speech, Borlas' cheeks went from pale to fiery red. He had broken the rules. He should have protected his sister. He had blamed her, while he was the oldest. Every sentence echood in his head and his shoulders sank deeper and deeper. It was his own fault, that wound on his arm. He should never have given in. He would have loved to show that he could do it, working with a knife. But it had only gone wrong.

Gilaen saw how unhappy her brother looked, and she stood up next to him. With her big eyes fixed on Seri, she shook her head. "He did say it, you know. That we shouldn't play with a knife. He tried to warn me. But I wanted it so badly. It was so real, so much more real than with a stick or a sword. I kept nagging and then... It wasn't just his fault. It was mine too.'

Borlas forgot that he didn't want to see what Seri was doing, and looked at her when she talked about punishment, and whether to talk to his mother.
"It would be a terrible punishment," his voice sounded hoarse. 'But maybe an honest one. And honest feels better than lying and hiding. That's why I want mom to know. I don't want to lie anymore.’
He paused a moment and then continued: ‘It would be really nice if you could help us. She is at work now, she does the laundry for the Rangers. She won't be back home until tonight.'

Ieara
At Reception

A lady somewhere in her thirties entered the Houses of Healing and rushed over to reception.
Her dark hair was tied in a messy bun and her clothing betrayed that she was not rich. Yet her clothes were clean, and there was a fresh smell of soap around her. She had to catch her breath, as if she had run all the way to the Houses of Healing.
'Madam, can you help me further?’ she asked Miriel. ‘My name is Ieara, I'm looking for my children.' The red, wrinkled hands rubbed nervously over each other.
"Albeth, our neighbor's mother, said she saw them go in here. At first, I thought she was mistaken, they are not sick, or so I thought. But I can't seem to find them anywhere. And then I found this under my son's bed...'
She held up a piece of cloth that clearly had clotted blood on it.
'I'm so worried! Are they here then? My son is eleven years old, his name is Borlas. And our daughter Gilaen is nine. Are they indeed here? Are they alright?'

It wouldn't do to be timid right now, she knew that. Timid was probably not what one needed in a Ranger, and it was also not what one needed in a healer who needed to make decisions quickly and determinedly if the situation called for it.

"Is there a way to.. try out? To train along for just.. a week or two to see if I would be suitable? If I make an oath, I will keep it, but making an oath in the dark seems.. well.. what if I give an oath to serve and it turns out after three weeks, I am the worst ranger you ever saw, trampling about like an olifant and stabbing myself with my own sword. Well.. I do not think I would. I am handy, and strong and I know better than to chase away the sparrow I want to catch but... I would like to try and see if I am any good before giving an oath. Are there any trials or tests? I just want to make sure I make the right choice, not just for me, but for everyone else. I've never fought with a sword before, though of course I can wield a bow."

*Training would be hard, but it would include some basic healing and then when training is over, she could see if she could.. add a bit more. There would be more time then, right? She was trying to feel her way, glancing at Eryn, hoping she didn't sound argumentative, she just wanted to make sure she did this.. right. No more heading back home, disappointed, and trying to fit in an old live that somehow never had been hers. She would make this work, and that meant starting out right! Mistakes could be made of course, but she wanted to make sure she chose the right path.*

“There is no testing period for most people usually join when they have already made their mind, and then add the necessary skills that they lack,” she explained and then paused looking thoughtful. “Most things require access permit, though there would be no use of you having a permit if you were not in training and supervised by someone.”

She looked up the tree again as if the nest atop it would give her ideas, then glanced at Eryn and back to Istriel.

“Look… If you are not really convinced yet if it is a path for you, I could make an exception. Here’s an offer: I do my own training and exercise early every morning, or most mornings, why don’t you join me for a week or so and see. You don’t need sword skills from the get-go. What do you say, Istriel?” Pele offered, a hint of smile on her lips.

Miriel, the Receptionist
Reception

The receptionist had returned to her workplace and had sorted through some of the papers she had received from Healer Seri, when a woman rushed in and asked for the same children that had come not so long ago.

Miriel looked at the bloodied cloth as if it was an additional piece of evidence in investigation where Ieara was a witness and she herself an investigator.

“Oh, ma’am, the children are indeed here,”
she admitted and then raised her hand as if to calm the worried mother. “But there is no cause to be overly alarmed, for they only had a slight problem and are being seen by a competent healer.”

She cleared her throat, thinking to herself that Borlas’ arm had not looked that well even if she tried to minimise the issue. “Would you like to wait here, or should I take you to where they are?” she asked, not wanting to make assumptions without offering the options first.

Istriel
February - afternoon or evening
Relief. It wafted through her visibly at the offer. She wasn't afraid of commitment. But she was afraid of letting people down. She had been given so much. Perhaps most people wouldn't see that, but when her mother couldn't care for her, she had an entire family to step in. A family that had never made her feel less. An aunt to play mother and an uncle to play father. She had no idea who her own father was or would have been. That was another matter. Her mother had not been married and no one had ever made her feel bad about it. No one had dared offered the dreaded word 'bastard' at least not in her living memory. One time someone had seemed to wish to yell it at her over some mishap that involved a tub of washing, an unsecured goat and a lot of mud...and had instead met the calm and kindly eyes of her uncle behind her, and anger had given way to a shrug and a stern warning to keep the beast controlled. Which she had.
She nodded quickly at Pele's suggestion, and glanced at Eryn with a mixture of gratitude and an ease all of a sudden.

"Oh yes. Yes, please. And if at the end of the week you do not think me hopeless, I will commit."

It seemed like that had been all she needed, a way to make sure she wouldn't disappoint, that you would know what you were taking on. Protecting people. It sounded.. why did it sound so right all of a sudden when just moments before she had been held in thrall by uncertainty? Was that all it had taken? Was she still interested in healing? Yes. But she would rather do it where needed, on the battlefield. If she had wanted to spoon soup in the mouth of an elderly woman convalescing, well she could have stayed home and learned that, right? She was strong, but she was grateful there didnt' seem to be any expectation of her knowing how to fight. She remembered little of sword fighting, save for a vague memory of her childhood. Her mother playing with her? Her brothers joining in? Not that they were actually her brothers. Her aunt halting the play with an expression Istriel had rarely seen there. Her aunt hadn't minded tree climbing, jumping over streams, hard work, and other things, but she wasn't too fond of playing fighting. And everyone knew better than to do what her aunt didn't like. She had a way of putting an end to things. She would.. have to write of course. But being a guard was.. honorable work. It was one of the things her aunt had emphasized. Do something practical, something good, something honorable.

Eryn
February - afternoon or evening

Eryn remained quiet while Istriel and Pele talked, because this was for Istriel to decide, and for Pele to answer her questions. Meanwhile, she nodded in answer to Pele, then started for the tree in question. It didn't take it very long for her to climb up, and she started looking for the nest while the other two were talking below.

While she was investigating the next, she could still hear what they were saying. As she heard Istriel's story about her sister, and the advice that her aunt had given her, Eryn paused and looked down at her new friend in surprise. While she wasn't exactly thinking as far ahead as marriage just yet, she couldn't help but think of her own personal predicament with two particular young men. It wasn't exactly the same as that, of course, but it was certainly something to think about.

She frowned thoughtfully as she continued to think about that, while taking a look at the bird's nest. The silly birds had managed to steal a few trinkets, including a bracelet and a couple of rings, so she tucked those into her pocket before beginning her descent from the tree. Once back on the ground, she added a comment as she pulled the items back out of her pocket and offered them to Pele.

"You know, maybe it would be a good idea to have a trial period for new people, and they have to get through that before they take the oath?" She suggested. "I mean, sure, there are some like me who are absolutely certain they want to become a ranger. Who already know most of what to expect and all that, but what about people like Istriel here, who don't know much about it? I mean, I can see where someone might think that's what they want to do, and commit to it, then get started in training and realize, 'ohh wow, this is not what I expected, it's harder than I thought, and I don't think I want to do this after all', you know? Well... if they've already taken the oath, then they're either stuck in something they don't really want to do after all, or they have to break the oath and drop out." She frowned. "I never thought about that before. What would happen to someone if they do take the oath and then change their mind?" She asked, curious. And, she thought it might be good for Istriel to know the answer to that, too. So she could have all the information she might need.

Ieara, mother of Borlas and Gilaen
At reception, with Miriel

'So something really happened!' Ieara put her hands with the bloodied cloth still in them in front of her face. Tears came to her eyes.
'I was hoping still that it might be a simple accident... Spilled tomatoes from the pantry, or the beetroot soup for tonight. Oh, my poor children... Oh, I'm so glad they're in good hands here. Are you sure it's not that bad? All that blood...'

She frowned. 'But how? I do hope it wasn’t... Oh, if it was the work of that neighbor boy who always teases them so much... Eru help him when he faces me, I will make sure that he gets what he deserves!'
The woman shook her fist combatively, but then her shoulders sunk.
'But no, he wouldn't go that far. He may like to tease, but he is no bully. And besides, that's not important now. I need to see the my children.'
She looked straight at Miriel and her face brightened up when she heard the receptionist's question.
'Is that possible? Can I go to them? Oh, please, I would like that very much. I don't want to leave them alone a minute longer.'

Seri Moss
visiting healer of Bree

Seri smiled softly at the little girl. "I'm glad to hear that," She said, when she insisted that her brother told her not to play with the knife. "Now, next time, I hope you'll listen to your brother when he tells you not to do something?" She did hope the kids were learning a lesson from all of this. "And yes, you shouldn't ever use knives and sharp things like that until you know how to use them safely. I'm glad to hear that you agree that you were also to blame." She added. "But now that we all know why it's a bad idea to use knives and why you should listen to your mother and father," She glanced at Gilaen, "And your big brother," She added. "Now that we know that, let's focus on getting that wound taken care of." She smiled as she finished up with cleaning the wound.

She was also glad to hear that Borlas agreed that it would be a fair punishment. They seemed like good children, and it seemed that they had learned from this mistake. "Alright, now I'm going to get something to put on that, and then we'll bandage it up so it can start healing." She went over to a cabinet while thinking about how to help the kids with their situation. "I'll help you with talking to your mother," She agreed. "After we're done here, we can walk over to the laundry. It's not far, and I think I know the way," She was still getting familiar with the city, but she knew that the rangers headquarters were on the sixth level, just like the houses of healing. So it stood to reason the laundry must be there, too.

"You can probably simply omit the details about the gift," She said thoughtfully. "You could tell her that you borrowed the knife because you wanted to practice your woodcrafting skills." She told Borlas, walking back over with a jar of ointment to put on his arm. "That is the truth, and yet it doesn't reveal your secret. The rest of the story, you can tell her without spoiling the surprise. And then when her birthday comes, you can still surprise her with the carving. What do you think about that?"

Seri - Healer of Bree
Visiting the Healers of M.T.
(a couple of days after the masquerade)

"I know what you mean," Seri nodded. "I'll likely never have an opportunity like this again, so I certainly understand. I doubt I could talk my daughter into taking my place again, not for such a long time." She grinned. "She and her husband do a lot of traveling, so they don't even usually get such a long vacation, themselves." She explained.

As they walked back inside, Seri nodded. "I'll do that, and I look forward to working with you and all your team of healers." She smiled. "And I'll see you tomorrow. It was very nice to meet you, and to get to see all of this. I should probably get back to my nieces now, but I'll be back tomorrow. Thank you for the tour, Pele."

Borlas and Gilaen
In a treatment room with Seri Moss

Borlas had kept his eyes closed for the last few minutes, and listened to Seri's kind words while she was treating him. There were moments when he winced slightly, but he had not cried or pulled back his arm. He had done his best sitting as still as he could, meanwhile trying not to focus on what Seri was doing exactly. But he couldn't help opening his eyes the moment she said she would put something on it so it could start healing.
'You mean you've finished already? Wow! That didn't hurt as much as I had feared. Dad always says that we...' he thought a moment and tried to find the right words. 'We fear the most... no. We suffer the most from the suffering that we fear. That's what it was. I guess that's just what this was too...'
He sat up straight, visibly relieved. 'Thank you, ma'am. You're a mighty fine healer!'
Now that his worst fears were no longer there, he had some colour in his face again. 'I think that is a good idea. It wouldn't be nice to spoil the surprise. It's just... it's still a surprise if we tell her I was making something. And if she knows that this was the reason, perhaps she will be a little less mad?'
Gilaen frowned. 'I am not sure...' she said. It seemed she was listening to something else. 'Do you hear that, Borlas? It's almost as if I hear mommy's voice somewhere...'

Seri Moss
visiting healer of Bree

Seri smiled as the kid seemed surprised by how quickly she was done cleaning his wound. "It sounds like your father is a very smart man." It seemed to her like very wise words, and it was good to hear that the boy was able to apply it to real life. He was clearly relieved that the worst was over, and Seri smiled at his complimentary words. "Thank you, but let's wait until your wound is all healed before you decide whether I'm a good healer." She laughed slightly at his enthusiasm.

"Alright, now let me put this salve on, and.." She paused when Gilaen mentioned hearing something. Possibly her mother's voice. Seri went quiet and listened as well while she began to gently apply a bit of the salve onto his wound, wondering if perhaps their mother had managed to find him here. She did think she heard a woman's voice, and the reception was just down the hall a little way. Hopefully, she would not be too terribly upset, if that was indeed her. At least that would make it easier for Seri to give her the instructions for taking care of the boy's wound, since she wouldn't have to go track her down and all.

Master Healer Pele Alarion
Taking Seri on a tour

“Yes, Bree and Minas Tirith are such a distance apart that any travelling takes lots of time, but I am glad they let you come this time,” Pele said, as she took off her cloak and folded it over her arm.

“I am sure I will see you some other day if not tomorrow,” she added, “Especially if you will be here often. Now, since you are returning to your nieces, I should return to my duties. Till the next time we meet then!”

Pele waved her hand lightly in farewell and headed for the study to set down her cloak and check her mandatory to-do list for what has to be done without much delay.

It seemed that an offer like this, a small chance to try out her hand, was all Istriel needed, and Pele thought she could feel palpable relief set in for the young woman. A hint of a smile played on the healer’s – or was it Captain’s – lips as she then offered further arrangements.

“Are you ready to start tomorrow morning or do you need some time to get ready? All you need is yourself and clothes comfortable enough to move in,” she said.

Then Eryn returned from the tree with some recovered jewellery, which Pele slid in her own pocket to later see if she could find proper owners.

She listened carefully to Eryn’s reasoning of giving people a trial period before they take an oath, and then she started them off on a small side-path as she considered the answer.

“Yes, it might seem to be fair to offer some time to try things out,” she acknowledged first, but then explained, “However, it might not work well. We are not what would be a usual military but a specialist unit, so any person enlisted would become aware of at least some confidential information, have access to premises and such. If they do not take an oath, how am I to know that they would then not go out and share the secret information? People may choose to leave after they take an oath, but they would still be bound by it at least to the point of not disclosing secret information. So…” She shrugged lightly. “I doubt I could allow anyone to come and try without having some security measures in place.”

Miriel, the Receptionist
Reception

“No, no. It is not awfully terrible,” Miriel tried to reassure the worried mother, though she could very well imagine that only seeing her children would convince her otherwise. “And no intentional violence involved.”

The receptionist assumed that it would not be a breach of her job duties if she led the woman to the treatment room, so she rose from her chair. “But come, I will take you to them,” she said with a smile and motioned for Ieara to follow her.

She then knocked at the door of the treatment room to announce their arrival and not to barge in on something. After receiving the response, she poked her head in and said: “The mother of the children has arrived; I led her here…” Miriel then opened the door wider.

Ieara, mother of Borlas and Gilaen
Following Miriel
Borlas and Gilaen
With Seri Moss in a treatment room

'Thank you so much', Ieara said to Miriel. 'Your'e so kind.'
There was a look of determination in her eyes now. Nothing would keep her away from her children if one of them was hurting.
As Miriel opened the door wider, Ieara stepped inside. There was Gilaen, up and about and looking quite healthy and some what... guilty.
And next to her she saw her son sitting next to a lady who was applying something to his arm. The boy looked a bit shaken, but not too sick.
'My dear children', she exhaled. 'What on Arda has happened!?'

Before his sister could say anything, Borlas coughed. He didn't dare look his mother in the face, and let his head hang, but he spoke up anyway.
'It's not as bad as it looks...' he half whispered.
'I'll be the judge of that', was the stern answer. But Ieara's voice wasn't harsh. 'Why are the two of you here without me? If something is wrong, you can always come to me, you know that, don't you?'
'We were afraid', Gilaen now joined in. 'Not of you, or.. well. It was an accident. And we didn't want to disturb you at work. Ms Irma can be so angry sometimes, we didn't want to come there and bother you or her.'
'And we were ashamed', her brother continued. 'I was working on... on something with wood. I was practicing my skills. For your b.. for a surprise. And then...' he looked at his sister. 'Then we played with the knife as well. It was an accident. We're really sorry...'

Ieara took a deep breath and grimaced as if she wasn't sure whether to cry, or laugh, or do both at the same time. She ended up sighing.
'What have your father and I told you about playing with knives, Borlas. Surely you know better by now!'
'It was my fault, mum', Gilaen piped up. 'I convinced him that it wasn't so bad for just once. And I hurt him. I really didn't mean to...'
Ieara shook her head and smiled a sad smile. 'Oh children.' Then she stepped forward and gave them both a hug.
'I do hope that you have learned from this!'
'Yes ma'am', they both said.

'Well now', Ieara went on, and she turned towards Seri Moss.
'I am sorry, ma'am, for any trouble these two might have given you. And for ignoring you until now.'
Her eyes narrowed a bit. 'I don't think we have ever met before, have we? Are you new to our Houses of Healing? Let me introduce myself properly.'
She held one hand on her heart and bent her head forwards. 'My name is Ieara, daughter of Targon. Thank you, for caring for my son. So... what exactly is wrong with him? Is there anything I could do?'

Seri Moss
visiting healer of Bree

The knock on the door made Seri look up. Given the fact that the kids had mentioned hearing their mother, she had a guess at who would be knocking. "Come on in," She called out, with a voice that would indicate that nothing was wrong. When Miriel looked in and announced that their mother had arrived, Seri nodded and glanced at the kids to see their reactions.

Then she stepped back to give them all a little space. She remained quiet while the mother expressed her worry, scolded the children, and then reassured them that all was well and she was not angry. That made Seri smile softly. She knew full-well how it could be, when a mother believed her child was hurt. The worry, the fear of what might happen, or not knowing if you could help them. Having a very... adventurous daughter, herself, she knew just what sort of things went through a mother's mind and heart in such moments.

When Ieara turned and acknowledged Seri at last, the healer smiled warmly at her. She hesitated about whether to copy the same gesture, of which she felt unfamiliar, or to extend a hand for a handshake. After just a brief hesitation, she went with the former. "Pleased to meet you, Ieara." She responded. "I am Seri," Here, she had a second's pause as she swiftly debated whether to also give her father's name, whom she had never known, or to simply leave it at that. She had never actually used his name in introducing herself, and in the end, she decided to do something else. "Of the Breelands." She concluded, instead. "I am only visiting for a couple of months, but during the time I am here in your fair city, I am working here, learning from your healers while also sharing some of the methods we use in the North." She explained. That would also explain her accent, she hoped.

"No need to apologize for anything," Seri added. "I have a daughter myself, and although she is grown now, she still gets herself into all sorts of adventures. So, I completely understand the worry," She assured Ieara with a soft smile. "I believe they have indeed learned their lessons, too. I have been talking to them about that." She informed the woman, so that she would know that they were sincere when they said they'd learned.

As for what was wrong with the boy, Seri motioned for her to come over. "It seems they were playing at being in battle, using the knife as a sword." She explained gently. "Little miss Eowyn here attacked the Nazgul a little too ferociously, and he got a nasty gash on his arm." Thank goodness it hadn't been in the stomach or chest... "And then neither of them wanted to tell you what happened, and they tried to treat it themselves, but it began to get a bit infected. That's when they came here. I've already explained to them how very bad that can be, and how serious it is when a wound becomes infected."

Then she took a small jar of ointment and gave it to Ieara. "I've already cleaned his wound, and put some of this ointment on it. You'll need to keep a close eye on the wound, and make sure that the infection is clearing up. Put some of this on the wound two times a day, and change the bandage each time. I assume you know not to re-use a bandage, but to always use a clean one?" She hoped so, anyway. "If it starts to look red and swollen again, bring him back to see a healer. It should begin to improve in a day or so. If you feel at all concerned that it isn't healing, feel free to come back and have it looked at again."

She paused, then added, "if you need more clean bandages, we can supply them here. Or, if you feel like you aren't sure you can do it properly, I can either show you how, or you can just bring him here to have the bandages changed." She did not know this lady, so she had no idea whether she knew how to do bandages or not. It would be more work for the healers, but she'd rather the bandage was done properly, than done sloppily, or tied too tight which could cause more harm than good. However, something about this lady made Seri feel like she probably did know how to do bandages.

Eryn
February - afternoon or evening

Eryn nodded thoughtfully upon hearing Pele's reasons for not doing it that way. She supposed it made sense. And she also figured that she, herself, was not the best person to try and make suggestions like that, since she already knew she wanted to join. She didn't need a trial period or anything like that. She'd wanted to join since she was nine years old. Maybe ten. But whatever. She knew what she wanted to do, and it was only a matter of waiting until she had reached the agreed age, for her father's sake.

She glanced at Istriel then, pleased to hear the relief that seemed to be in her voice now. "If you stick with the rangers, then in a couple of years, we'll be comrades." She grinned at the thought. Eryn thought it was sort of funny, too, that she seemed to have a talent for befriending rangers, and this time she'd become friends with someone before they even decided to join. In fact, it was Eryn's suggestion that had led her toward that thought in the first place. She hoped that Istriel would decide she liked being a ranger, and that she'd feel like it was her place. If not, then Eryn would try to help her find whatever she did feel was her place.

Addhor Raxëlilta – Business in the Gardens
with Master Healer - @Pele Alarion
Nearly a week-ish after the Fire/Death of Relic
(Continued from THIS POST)

They are all yours,” he assured the Masterhealer. “I do not expect you to give me an opinion based on but a few minutes of demonstration. Keep them, test them. Think on it, and we shall go from there,” he advised her. “This is the third,” he rallied up the confidence to retrieve the last sample of his efforts from the satchel.

It was unlike the first model, which was polished wood, poised in a state of stately repose. It was also unlike to the second model, which was shaped less like a believable curved hand to look at, though clearly possessed more strength in it’s chunkier wood structure. The third option was a collection of smaller pieces of wood, each taking the form of one of the notable bones of a human hand. Thumb and four fingers all, broken up into their respective phalanges and the hand itself, the wrist .. a small set of carpels, and meta carpels. Every one it’s own small block of wood, all held together by reams of string which would resemble the collective form. When the carpenter lifted it carefully out to be observed, the fingers moved individually, and swung slightly on their strings.

I am still working on this third version, ever since Ilisys asked me to construct some wooden puppets for the Erulaitalë,Addhor admitted. “They were controlled by strings, to manage their movements from above. The children liked that they could dance and move more fluidly than any mere cloth puppet. I tried fixing metal pins between the pieces but that restricted the movement. Currently I am experimenting with what might prove more flexible than that, yet still prove more manageable and hardy than string. But you see,” to demonstrate his point, the tradesman manipulated the roped hand of pieces so that it seemed to be actually holding hands with his own normal flesh-bound hand. “It can be better interacted with, unlike either of the others. which are prone in their poses. So it is my greatest goal for the project to date. Even if it remains thus far the least practical of the three.

Despite this clear explanation that the third model was not perfect yet, by any means, the potential, the hope, was made plain. “Take your time,” he bade her. “You know where to find me, Pele, if you have further questions, anything. It is not going to be a simple overnight solution. But any thing I can do to try and help improvement, I will try. You have my word.

He rose, and indicated that he would be leaving the satchel, for the Healer’s use in carrying and storing the items, as and how she required. With a bow then, he prepared to leave.
All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not touched by the frost.
