"Well, kitty cat..."
Pele said when the black cat decided her lap was a good spot to sleep. "Let us hope that the Barracks Master is sleeping and will not come this way to check who's sitting up late at night." Regardless of her words of warning that were still tinged with amusement she found that the cat's presence and purr relaxed her and made her forget the dark thoughts that had haunted her not that long ago.

Carefully she leaned back into the sofa to be more comfortable herself not just to accommodate the cat - it wouldn't hurt to relax for a bit longer, would it? Perhaps sleep would eventually arrive.

"Mmm?" she looked at the cat and laughed softly. "But you are a total sweets, aren't you..." She couldn't resist reaching down to run her hand over his soft fur a couple times before she eventually got around to scratching under his chin.

Lieutenant Arnyn Dealedwen
Barracks: Mess, Baths - December 28th, early morning
Continued from here

She needed food. She needed to clean up. And she needed rest. Whether she needed it in that order, Arnyn wasn't sure- but at least it seemed like the most efficient one. She could grab food at the mess, so she would not have to prepare it herself. She could clean up at the barracks baths, where she always stocked some personal hygiene items and a clean set of clothes in one of the lockers. Then she still needed to figure out how to meet Narsule's needs. Then she could go down to the Fourth - and rest. Until her shift at headquarters after lunch.

It seemed like a very long list of things left to do, before she could crawl into bed and shut her eyes against the world. Too long a list. When it only needed to take an hour and a half or so. The Lieutenant gritted her teeth. She could do this. She - could - do - this.

By the Valar. And this was only day one.

It was still very early when she arrived at the mess hall. Not too many other rangers were around as of yet, which facilitated the process of fulling up a plate and finding a quiet seat. While Arnyn knew she had to eat, she wasn't feeling very ambitious. She had selected some eggs with tomatoes, and a tall glass of water. The water was not an issue. The eggs and tomatoes... well, they tasted alright. The only problem was that, about halfway through her plate, they were threatening to come back out.

She kept it down. Somehow. The fact that the mess was filling up, was probably helping. But that people wanted to talk to her, if only for a few words, was not. She raised her hand and nodded for a few greetings, and made sure not to linger. She rushed out, in fact.

To the baths. Where she almost retched the eggs back up in the water. Managed not to. And then fell asleep in the bath until two loud-mouthed female rangers came in, and Arnyn startled awake. It had only been a few minutes, but it told her enough. She needed to get moving. Get home.

Stables

Arnyn leaned against Narsule, half-hugging him and talking to him quietly. Somehow, being around him made her feel better already. After saddling him and mounting, it took no more than a few rides along the pen before she had to slide off her horse. The eggs won. And ended up next to the fence.

She got back on her horse, though, letting him ride some more laps before she brought him back to the stables, along with her apologies. She made no promises for the next day, however, as she brushed him down.

Now all she had to do, was walk back to her house. Unlock the door. Get inside. And drop down on her couch. The Lieutenant stumbled away from the Stables, paused. Took a deep breath. It's just two circles. Then I have a few hours to rest. I can do this.

He looked at her lazily as she laughed then stroked his fur and gave him the much wanted scratches under the chin.

She looked like she was getting comfortable and might even fall asleep. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the scratches till he might fall asleep as well.

He enjoyed her lap and all that she’d done for him, his eyes blinked lazily and with contentment. His purr was steady, something to fall asleep too.

He hadn’t had plans to stay in the room so long, after all, he had cat things to do but wasn’t this also a cat thing to do?? He decided to stay as long as she would let him. 🐈‍⬛

Gladhron
Stables, with Lt. Arnyn

The sunrise had been very beautiful to see, but it had not lasted long. After some of their group had gone to the houses of healing, Gladhron had been secretly glad that Gwestion did not seem interested in joining Celume in going for a ride in the Pelennor. Well, technically, he said he had 'some other things to do' but had not really offered much further information about what sort of things. Gladhron hardly cared, he was only glad that this would provide him more of an opportunity to spend some time with her. Just her, and just him.

He was smiling as he followed her into the stables where Narsule lived. While he was far more interested in seeing Celume, he was also glad for a chance to see her horse, too. They'd all spent a lot of time together, in the north. He had gotten familiar with him, and it would be nice to see him again. He was listening as Celume told him about how some of the rangers had their own horses, but how many of the horses here were used by whoever needed to use them. It made sense. It was nice that they had the ability to use a horse without having to own one, since he could see where it might be difficult for some people to have their own. "Ah, there he is," Gladhron smiled as he saw the familiar horse, and wondered if he would remember Gladhron. Or, the other horses that Narsule had become friends with, during his time in the north, for that matter.

She was smiling as she approached Nársulë, and once she had stepped into the stallion's stall and put a hand to the side of his neck, she turned to Gladhron with a grin. "Look. It's an old friend of ours," she told Nársulë, gesturing at Gladhron. The stallion lowered his head slightly and nickered softly. Arnyn lifted her eyebrows, happily surprised. "He recognizes you," she grinned at Gladhron. "He hardly does that with anyone."

Arnyn prepared Nársulë for the ride with the swift and easy motions of someone who had done the exact same thing countless times before. Before long, she was guiding her dark bay stallion out of the stables and the corral out in front of it. "I wonder how he will react when he sees Gaeroch," she spoke her thoughts out loud to Gladhron. As they left the ranger area, a few rangers passed them by, offering nods or quick salutes to her, which she returned. Gladhron got a few inquisitive looks, but all were friendly.

Having the cat in her lap made her somewhat comfortable, and his silky fur to her touch and his constant purring caused her to forget her troubles. She was aware that perhaps it would be best to set the cat back outside and go to bed, she remained where she was, at first simply feeling at ease, though sleep gradually overcame her, and she felt her eyes closing every so often. After she had nodded off and woken when her chin dropped down, Pele decided it was time to go back to bed.

"Right, kitty cat," she said as she gently scooped up Midnight in her arms and slowly moved for the exit. "It has been wonderful having you here, but I think it is time we part ways."

After a couple more scratches she set the cat on the ground outside just as gently as she had picked him up, closed the door and moved towards her room as quietly as a shadow.

He was just settling in when he found himself being scooped up and carried to the door. He mewed lightly as she gave him scratches but it seemed his cozy spot wasn't to last. When placed on the ground he sat and looked up at her, blinking for a moment while the door shut before him. Well, he'd enjoyed it while it lasted but he soon stood and turned from the door, his paws silently carrying him across the stone floor to where he could jump up and exit the area without much trouble.

With a brief look back he stood effortlessly on the edge of the wall, he'd enjoyed the encounter and hoped to once again find her sitting there. He turned back and slipped silently into the darkness. He had things to do and people to see...

Lieutenant Arnyn Dealedwen
with her trainee, Trastion Leithor
Stables - January 2nd

She'd felt... alright upon waking. Her body seemed to be slowly catching up to - or recovering from - the sleep deprivation she'd accumulated during the start of her nightshade experiment. Having been able to eat and sleep decently for a day or two now had helped enormously. And talking to Tras had, as well - since he'd given her something else to focus on, other than Umbar, and the fact her brother and two of her best friends were diving head first into that place... and that she was not stopping them.

The Lieutenant was smiling softly at something Trastion had said as they entered the stables. No one else was there yet. Arnyn headed straight for Narsulë's stall, and her smile deepened at the sight of her fierce dark bay stallion. "Hey," she greeted him quietly, her voice lower and deeper, as her hand gently stroked the side of the warhorse's neck.

Trainee Trastion Leithor
Stables - Afternoon of Jan 2nd

Trastion brushed a crumb or two from his shirt as he and Arnyn walked from the common room out to the stables, as he had only recently finished eating a sandwich. It had been a good sandwich, but the bread had dropped a couple of crumbs on him which he hadn't noticed until now.

On his way out of the common room, he'd also stepped into the Little Mess for a moment and grabbed a carrot. Now, as he and Arnyn stepped into the stables, he broke the carrot into as small pieces as he could, with using only his hands and not a knife. One of these, he offered to Arnyn, for Narsule, and another, he offered to Lightning as he approached the other horse's stall, the one that he usually rode for a little while each day. He was eager for the treat and stretched his head out over the stall door to take the piece of carrot right out of his palm, then happily crunched it while the trainee scratched his head, focusing on his favorite spots.

"When are your friends supposed to be getting here?" Trastion asked, glancing over at Arnyn once he had properly greeted Lightning, and had given her a moment to do the same with Narsule.

She'd offered a thankful nod to Tras after he'd handed her the carrot, and Narsulë was pleased with the treat. "You can thank Trastion for that," she murmured to the large horse, smiling a little. "He'll be taking care of you soon, for a while. Him and some friends."

When Trastion asked when her friends would be arriving, Arnyn leaned against one of the posts of the entry to Narsulë's stall, and resisted a shrug. Instead, she loosely crossed her arms. "They shouldn't be long, I expect. They were going to bring over their horses just around this time, I believe. Two mares. Gaeroch is a chestnut. Mael is a dapple." Arnyn smiled a little, thinking how funny it was that both horses were somewhat alike to their riders. "Gaeroch will probably warm to you rather easily. Mael will take some more time. But you will be pleased to know that neither are biters..."

"Not biters," Gladhron's voice spoke up in confirmation, as he entered the stable, having just caught the last bit of what Arnyn said, "But I should warn you about Gaeroch's kicking." He told Trastion with a slightly teasing grin. He was leading the chestnut mare along beside him, and she was saddled and looked as if she'd just come from a lengthy ride.

Trastion blinked as he turned from Lightning, and stared at Gladhron briefly. "You?" He asked, surprised. "You're the one..?" He glanced questioningly at Arnyn, as another man entered the stable more quietly, Mael the slightly smaller, dappled gray horse, who also was clearly coming back from a ride.

Gwestion nodded a greeting to Arnyn as he caught sight of her, then turned to take a look at Trastion. The brothers had decided to spend some time with their horses before leaving them behind for... however long. He led her just inside the stable, before getting a brush from a pouch he had on his saddle. For now, he kept quiet and just listened.

"Yep," Gladhron answered, as he also dug out his grooming tools to get started brushing down his mare. "I heard you'll be taking care of our girls, while we're gone." He commented to Trastion.

The trainee was still slightly surprised, even though he knew he probably shouldn't be. Not after the other morning. Because of that, and what Kaylin had told him, he knew that Gladhron and Arnyn were good friends. But he had not known that he and his brother were the ones who she'd told him, a little while ago, would be going to.. Umbar. He nodded in answer to Gladhron's words, still trying to figure out how he felt about it, now that the realized that he actually knew at least one of those friends Arnyn had spoken of. "I'll give them the best care that I can," He promised.

She couldn't help a little grin at Gladhron's chosen words as he came in. Some part of her wanted to lean into the jest, but with the departure looming over all of them, she found it too difficult to do so. Instead, she nodded in reply to Gwestion's own wordless greeting, and then took careful note of Trastion's surprise at seeing Gladhron.

"I know you've met Gladhron already," Arnyn told Trastion. "And that's his brother behind him. Gwestion - meet Trastion." The delivery was neutral, just as neutral as her stance was against the wooden post. "My trainee. He's good with horses. I'm sure he will take excellent care of them," she told the brothers, before raising an eyebrow at Trastion that made it perfectly clear how much trouble he would be in, if for some reason that might turn out not to be the case.

"I figured you should all talk about your expectations. And whether those are feasible. And share with Tras any specifics about Gaeroch and Mael that he should know about, before he tries to handle them."

Her words were so businesslike, that they felt cold. But it was easier than it was to remember what it had been like the last time Gwestion, Gladhron and she had been in stables together shortly before parting ways with them. Easier than remembering that bottomless grief. Easier than considering how she felt, this time. About sending two friends into mortal danger -- who would have, if they had simply never met her, be safely exploring the city instead.

Trainee Trastion Leithor | Gladhron | Gwestion
With Gaeroch & Mael
Stables - Afternoon of Jan 2nd

"Pleased to meet you," Trastion smiled over at Gladhron's brother when Arnyn introduced him.

"Likewise." Gwestion answered quietly, while he set his pouch of grooming supplies aside and took a moment to unsaddle Mael while the others were talking. While mentally noting that Trastion seemed to be at least somewhat aware of where they would be going, which meant that Arnyn must have told him. Which told him that she trusted him enough to tell him that. Either that, or Gladhron had been talking again, but he didn't think he would've had an opportunity to do so.

Trastion nodded in answer to Arnyn, as well as her look at him. "Of course." He promised. "I'll take as good care of their horses as if they were my own."

"Well, we appreciate that a lot." Gladhron answered, quite sincerely. "They aren't used to being away from us for long periods, so it will likely be hard for them." He rubbed Gaeroch's nose affectionately and lightly hugged her neck.

"I've promised to care for Narsule, as well as your horses," Trastion mentioned. "And Arnyn has given me permission to enlist help from a friend or two, so that they all get to go out for a ride now and then." He explained.

"Good idea! That makes sense." Gladhron agreed. "So, then, I should tell you a few important things about Gaeroch here," He patted her shoulder lightly and came around to undo her saddle while he talked. "She likes to be in the lead," He explained. "So, if you go riding with others, if she isn't in front, she's going to push her way to the front of the line, no matter how much you try to hold her back she'll just keep walking quicker."

Trastion grinned in amusement and held his hand out for the horse to sniff. "Alright, I'll keep that in mind." He petted her neck once she seemed to be alright with him. "Gaeroch likes to be in the lead."

"Right. But she also doesn't like for anyone to follow her too closely," Gladhron continued. "So," He motioned behind her. "Another horse gets within kicking range, and she will probably kick back at it."

"Oh. Alright, I'll remember that." Trastion watched while Gladhron took off his saddle and pad, taking note of which ones went to which horse. "Is there anything else I should know?" He wondered.

"Well, she likes to go fast," Gladhron smiled. "She will slow down if you insist, but if you just let her pick her own pace, she prefers a quick pace. So, if anyone besides you is going to ride her, make sure and pass that information on to them as well." He took a moment to think, as he was not used to having to explain his horse's particularities to anyone. "Oh, and she's just a bit touchy about her back feet," He added, as he went over to demonstrate, while making sure Trastion was standing in a safe spot. "She will.. eventually.. pick them up when asked, but," He got her to lift her back hoof, and the mare attempted a vague kick before accepting that she had to hold it up, and Gladhron propped her leg against his knee while he cleaned the mud out of her hoof. "She usually tries to kick a bit when she first lifts them," He continued saying, "especially since she doesn't know you. Occasionally, she might try to pull her leg away while you're cleaning her hoof, but she doesn't usually with me." He explained, moving to her other side. "If she keeps it up, just give her a little smack on the backside." He paused. "Not hard of course.. not enough to hurt her, but you know.. sometimes she just needs a little reminder to behave, and to stop acting up."

Over at his horse, Gwestion bit back a remark about the horse being much like its owner. Instead, he cast a slightly amused glance over at Arnyn, wondering if she had the same thought.

"Thanks for the warning on that," Trastion nodded. "I'll be careful with the back feet, then." He paused. "Does she like carrots?" He asked, remembering the pieces of carrot in his pockets.

"Sure, she likes carrots, celery, apples, pears, strawberries, grass... you name it." Gladhron grinned. "If it's safe for horses, she'll eat it. Just be careful not to let her get ahold of anything horses shouldn't eat." He added.

Trastion smiled and offered her a piece of carrot. "So, Gaeroch likes to go fast, doesn't like being behind others, but also doesn't like having others too close behind her. Might kick a little when I try to pick up her back hooves.. anything else?"

Gladhron thought for a moment, rubbing his mare's neck lightly. "She likes to get all the attention," He smiled. "She gets jealous easily. For anything. Another horse is getting a treat, another horse is going out for a ride, another horse is getting petted, whatever it is.. she's going to get jealous."

Trastion laughed lightly. "Alright. And.. where's her bridle?" He wondered, noticing that both Gaeroch and Mael only had on halters.

Gladhron smiled and shook his head. "Nah, we don't bother with those." He answered. "A halter with reins tied on is all we use. No bit, they respond well enough to the pressure on the halter's noseband, rather than a bit in the mouth. And that way, they can grab at bushes and things as we go through the woods, and we don't have to constantly stay after them to leave it alone." He explained. "They're actually not used to being in a stall most of the time," He frowned. "I'm worried that they'll be too bored, or that they might be unhappy. They usually graze and forage throughout the day."

"I'll be sure they get enough exercise and food," Trastion promised. "And, maybe I'll see about getting them turned out to pasture for a while each day."

"Thanks, we appreciate that." Gladhron smiled as he pulled the saddle and pad off, then glanced around before focusing on Arnyn. "What stall should I put her into? And where should I put her saddle and things?"

Gladhron started talking about his horse. Gaeroch likes this, hates that. When he mentioned lightly slapping her backside to get her to behave, Arnyn looked over at Gwestion. That the two of them chose to glance at each other at the exact same time, made Arnyn's half smile twitch into a slightly bigger one. Inconspicuously, she moved away frorm her spot near Narsulë. When she drew up beside Gwestion, her voice was low and quit, so only he would hear. "Does that work on him, as well?"

At Gladhron's question, she tilted her chin. "I had two stalls cleared to Narsulë's right," she indicated. "So Gaeroch and Mael can be next to each other, and at least next to one other horse they know. Up to you two who you put in the middle. The tack room’s just over there. The hooks are marked with the stall numbers.”

"Your turn," she stated, looking at Gwestion, and because she knew Gwestion was a little more careful around new people, she added: "Trastion has been training with me since last spring. I've seen how he is with horses over a long period of time." Gwestion would know what she left unsaid, too. That he could trust Mael with Tras. And how much safer could Gaeroch and Mael be, then up in the Ranger stabls on the Sixth Circle, no less?

Gwestion tilted his head with an excessively thoughtful look at that question, before shaking his head regretfully. "Never worked for our parents, alas." He told her. "Although you are welcome to try," He continued, shrugging with a teasing glint in his eyes. "You might have better results. I usually find him to be more food-motivated, myself. He especially likes treats." He added, as if talking about a horse rather than his brother. He busied himself with taking off Mael's saddle while Arnyn began answering Gladhron's question.

"Ah, thank you." Gladhron smiled to hear that she'd been so thoughtful as to clear the stalls near Narsule, so the horses would be near their friend. He either didn't hear the comments between Arnyn and Gwestion, or he chose to ignore them. He set his saddle aside for a moment while he led Gaeroch into the first stall, closest to Narsule, and took a moment to get them both familiar with the stall.

Meanwhile, Gwestion took a look at the stall's number of the one next to Gladhron's, so he'd know where to take his saddle. He looked over at Arnyn when she commented on Trastion's abilities, and he gave a small nod of appreciation for that. He took a moment to consider the things that Gladhron had said which covered both horses; about using halters rather than bridle and bit, and how they were used to spending more time outdoors, foraging and grazing. He didn't want to repeat the same things, after all.

"Mael is not as.. high maintenance, as Gaeroch," He informed Trastion with a trace of amusement. "But she is wary of strangers, and she will resist being lead or ridden by someone she doesn't know," He warned. Which was fairly important to know, obviously. "So, whoever else you get to help you with exercising them will need to know that, as well."

"Alright," Trastion nodded as he approached the grey horse, holding out his hand to let her sniff of him. "I've asked Arnyn if it would be alright to ask Eryn for help," He explained. "She's not a ranger but her father is, and she loves horses."

"Eryn? We've met her." Gladhron spoke up from Gaeroch's new stall, and grinned, recalling the girl from the park.

Gwestion paused to let the two get a bit acquainted, nodding slightly. "Yes, Eryn seems a good choice." He agreed. "Although, Mael responds to Sindarin commands," He paused, recalling that Eryn had said she did not speak Sindarin. "You'll need to tell her some of those. And, while she does not bite or kick or any of that, normally.. if you get into a fighting situation, she will fight. She may not look like a big war horse," He added with a little glance toward Narsule, before turning back to rub his mare's forehead gently, "but she thinks she is one, nonetheless."

"That's true," Gladhron agreed. "I've even seen her fighting against orcs. Kicked one or two of them right over a cliff, as I recall." He grinned.

"Really? Impressive," Trastion smiled as he petted her. "You'll be alright here, Mael." He promised. "I'll take good care of you until they get back."

She snorted softly and looked at Gwestion. He quietly put his arms around her neck and hugged lightly. He took a moment to think if there was anything else that was important to tell him. "She has a particular fondness for berries, so just be mindful not to let her have too much at once if you give her any." He then showed Trastion where Mael's favorite places to be scratched were. "She does tend to get very bored being in a stall for a long time," He mentioned, recalling from the time when they'd stayed at the Forsaken Inn for a long period of time.

"Oh... she is also very suspicious of water." He remembered another useful bit of information to share. "It's a bit silly, but she doesn't like to step into water. It doesn't matter if it's three feet deep or three inches; as far as she's concerned, it's sure to have some sort of terrible monster lurking under the surface. Or maybe she thinks she'll drown or something, although I happen to know she can swim quite well." He shrugged slightly. "She'll fight orcs and all that, but ask her to walk through a puddle, and she acts like it's the most terrifying thing ever."

Trastion nodded as he mentally filed this information away. He knew that every horse had its own little quirks, and some of them had unexplainable phobias, so he certainly wasn't going to judge. His own horse, whom he missed a lot, had been very skittish of lightning and thunder. He remembered often going out to the stable during storms, to try and calm Rhovan down. He hoped he was doing alright now that Linn was the one taking care of him. "Alright. I'll remember that, and I'll pass on any relevant information to anyone I ask to help me with riding them." He promised.

Arnyn's brows lifted slightly when Gwestion chose to lean into her joke. The rare times he did such a thing, it was always a pleasure. And Arnyn knew Gladhron would not mind the teasing, as long as it made his brother smile - whether that smile was on the inside or the outside. With half an amused smile, she nodded, even as she wondered if his comment about 'her having better results' might mean he might believe something had happened between her and his brother. Had Gladhron not set the record straight, then? "Noted. I think I'd rather give him food than slap his butt," she decided with a quiet mumble, and it was no surprise that Gwestion hid his face while turning to Mael's saddle, then. Her own half smile twitched into a full one - for just a moment.

She focused on Trastion then, seeing how he was taking in the information, how he was processing. Trying to gauge whether he would remember it all. As the brothers took their horses into their stalls, Arnyn lingered in the aisle. Narsule let out a loud breath in her direction, and she slowly moved to join him again, deciding to brush him a little as Gwestion explained Mael's particularities. There was no need for Arnyn to do the same; over the course of months, Trastion had gotten to know Narsulë well enough he needed no additional directions. Arnyn lovingly moved the brush along her stallion's coat. He isn't difficult, anyway.

"I'll join you tomorrow, Taras," she spoke up once Gwestion had finished. "After our morning training. We can go over everything again, and that way you can spend some time with them alongside someone they already know, at least." Even if she'd only be able to do that one more day, before she'd set sail with the rangers herself.

Stables - Afternoon of Jan 2nd

If Gwestion smiled at Arnyn's comment, it would be difficult to tell since he was turned toward his horse at the moment, and his face was hidden by his saddle. By the time he'd turned back to speak with Trastion about his horse, however, he had resumed his normal expression.

Trastion, meanwhile, took mental note of all that Gwestion had told him. "Alright, I'll remember all of that." He assured him. "Thanks, the water thing is useful to know." He added. "She doesn't have any issues with cleaning her hooves?" He checked.

"No," Gwestion assured him, shaking his head as he moved his hand down toward Mael's ankle. "Ortha," He instructed. She promptly lifted her foot up to let him clean the mud out if her hoof. He did the same with the others. "She is generally very obedient, though she may resist you, as she isn't familiar with you." He explained to Trastion.

Hearing Celume's words, Gwestion gave a small nod of approval to hear that she would join Trastion for tomorrow, at least. He was glad to hear it. He figured Mael would prefer to have someone familiar around, so he appreciated Celume doing that. He took his saddle and pad into the tack room, and found the saddle rack with the corresponding number to the stall which Mael was to be using.

"Thanks, that'd be great." Trastion smiled at Arnyn when she offered to come along. He stayed by Mael and petted her while Gwestion was taking the saddle to the tack room.

Returning, Gwestion spent some time brushing all over Mael's coat, making sure to clean off any splatters of mud around her legs and belly, and made sure she had no sweat remaining from the saddle pad. Just spending time with her, before he wouldn't be around to. "I appreciate your being willing to take care of our horses, while we're away." He told Trastion quietly while he worked. "I am sure they will miss us greatly, so it will be good to know that someone is checking in on them, and ensuring they aren't just left in these stalls, bored." He said, checking that she looked perfectly clean and well-groomed, before leading her into the stall which would be hers for the next few weeks, or however long they were away.

Gladhron finished with saying goodbye to Gaeroch, and rejoined them. "Same," He added. "Oh," He looked at Arnyn. "I'm not sure if she will, but if Aislin wanted to stop in and check on them, would that be alright? Brooke too, but I doubt she will. She isn't really a.. horse person." He smiled faintly.

"That reminds me," Gwestion mentioned, stepping out of Mael's stall after having spent a moment saying goodbye. He looked at Trastion, "I'm not sure if you've met her, but Aislin might be interested in taking her aunt Seri's horse out for a ride. If she is, perhaps you might consider letting her join you, and anyone you have helping you with our horses? We'd certainly feel better if she wasn't out riding alone."

"She's very adventurous, and always wants to explore. But we worry a bit about a young lady wandering around by herself, in a strange city.. you know." Gladhron explained.

"Sure." Trastion nodded. "I get that, and I can't blame you for that. Where would I find her?" He asked.

"Likely, either at the houses of healing, where she's been studying with Seri, or at Lady Isys Azrubel's house," Gladhron answered. "That's where they are staying, while they're in town."

Trastion blinked at hearing that. He didn't look alarmed, but a little flash of panic did run through his mind, briefly. He gave a slow nod. "Ranger Isys? That's interesting. I've never been to her house, but I know where the Houses of Healing are." He smiled. "Don't worry. If she does want to take her horse out for a ride, I'll be sure she's not going alone."

"Thank you." Gwestion nodded, feeling slightly better about that. He glanced back at his horse with a little sigh. "Well, I believe that is everything." He declared, taking a glance at his brother. "We probably need to be going, soon. We still have to stop by the house and get our things before we go." They were supposed to be leaving in just a short while, after all.

"Right." Gladhron nodded, feeling a bit reluctant. "I'll mention to Aislin that you might come by," He added with a smile at Trastion. "So she and Seri knows that we actually do know you and all."

"Sounds good." He said, nodding. "So... I hope everything goes well with your.. trip." He glanced at Arnyn, unsure if there was anything else.

Lieutenant Arnyn Dealedwen
with her trainee, Trastion Leithor
Stables - January 2nd

Arnyn hoped Trastion would be smart enough to only try and find Aislin at the Houses of Healing. From what he said, she deduced he was, which brought a small, satisfied smile to her face. "I'm sure you can describe him accurately to Seri and Aislin. If you want, I can hand Tras a note from me, to hand over to Seri or Aislin when he first meets her. That way, everyone is certain we are talking about the same person and no one has to worry." Usually, she wouldn't really think to bother of such a thing. But after what Seri might have been told, or warned about, by Domonal Raxelilta, Arnyn figured it might be best not to cause anyone any... undue stress.

At Gwestion's comment that they should hurry, the Lieutenant nodded neutrally. "While you two do that," she told Gladhron and Gwestion, "I can write Tras his note. So I do not forget. And then I will meet you at the house on Fourth." She didn't have to say she meant the safe house. The brothers had been already been there, after all. And if she had meant her house, she would have specifically mentioned her house. Not the house. "I'll have Nársulë pull the carriage," she announced, thus also definitively confirming she would be seeing them off. Something she had been evasive about, until now.

Trainee Trastion Leithor | Gladhron | Gwestion
With Gaeroch & Mael
Stables - Afternoon of Jan 2nd

"A note would be perfect, good idea." Gladhron nodded in agreement. "And thank you, Trastion, for this." He added, with a nod to their horses. "It means a lot to know that someone will be taking good care of them."

"Of course. I understand, believe me." He smiled, but inside he was feeling slightly sad at the memory of having to leave his own horse behind. And remembering how he had asked his little sister to look in on him now and then, even though they had stablemen employed who could take care of Rhovan perfectly well.

Gwestion nodded in answer to Arnyn's comment about where to meet her. "Alright. We will see you there." He knew it shouldn't take them long to gather their things, but saying goodbye to Seri, Brooke, and Aislin might take a moment. Still, he figured they should be able to get there before Arnyn got done. "Thank you again, Trastion." He added with a little nod in parting, before he and Gladhron left the stable to return to Isys' house.

After they had left, Trastion turned to the horses and petted first Gaeroch, then Mael, and offered a piece of carrot to each one, which finished up what he had in his pockets. "How long do you expect they will be gone?" He wondered aloud, glancing over his shoulder at Arnyn. "I don't mind taking care of them, I just wonder how long to expect. They'll be missing their owners, I'm sure." He explained.

Arnyn nodded in return when Gladhron said the note was a good idea. Not that it would prove much - if anyone were to forge it and hand it to someone else. But then they would have to think of forging the note, at least. They'd almost have to know about the agreement that had been made, about that.

A nod was all she had to offer, as well, when the brothers left the stables, Gwestion verbalizing they would see her 'there'.

At Trastion's question, she let out a slow, deep breath. "Hard to say," the Lieutenant replied slowly. "But I imagine, quite a long time. Considering where they are going, this is not a matter of days. But weeks - at the least. Possibly months." Approaching Mael and Trastion, making sure to tread carefully enough not to spook the dapple mare, Arnyn looked troubled despite her best efforts. "At least they will know Gaeroch and Mael will be looked after," she said quietly. It was a small comfort.

Pushing her mind toward practicalities, she went over the next items on her to-do list. Write the note for Tras, make sure he has it. Take Nársulë with her down to Fourth. Pick up a pack at her own house. Go fetch the carriage and take it back up to Fourth.

"Come on. When we are done here, I have much to do, still," she mumbled. "Unless there is anything else you wanted to ask about?" she ventured, gesturing toward the stables around them, indicating she expected him to stay on topic.

He nodded slightly, acknowledging the reply that it was hard to say how long they would be gone. Hopefully, they wouldn't run into any undue trouble in that place. And he agreed with Arnyn, too. It would surely be a relief to them to know that their horses were taken care of, and thereforeo ne less thing for them to be thinking about. But he also suspected that they would probably still think about it, the same way Trastion thought about his horse now and then. Despite knowing that he was in good care.

He shook his head in response to Arnyn's comment. "No, I can't think of anything to ask." He assured her. "You go on and do whatever you need to do." He told her. "If I think of anything else to ask, I can wait until tomorrow." He smiled at her. It was a relief that she would be joining him then, at least. While Arnyn would take her leave of the stables, Trastion took a moment to pet Gaeroch, since she was sticking her head over the stall door and giving him a clearly jealous look upon seeing Mael getting some attention. At least this would give him plenty of distractions, so he might not spend all of his time thinking about all that he was missing out on with this training thing.

Unalmis Raxëlilta and Ilisys Azrubêl
Common Room. November

He was not one for loitering around the Common Room, most usually because Lieutenant Brian had a habit of noticing him there, growing entirely unreasonably suspicious, and either directing the young Ranger to find something to do with himself, or WORSE ... the Lieutenant himself would ‘suggest’ something for Nal to do. Even on the rare occasion when he had sat down on purpose with a book, he had been commanded to hand over said book, and wait while the Barracks Master shook it, checked for false covers, and the rest, before he would begrudgingly give it back for the Ranger to read. There was of course the other main cause for his rarely abiding indoors. Because he far preferred the outdoors. And because Isys had retreated to her own house on the Fifth, Unalmis would tend to call for her on his way out for when they trained together. So he'd never needed to meet her here in the Common Room first.

This morning however, the Ehtyar had told him to meet her here. And, knowing that the asking of questions of such a lady would gain him nothing but more questions, Nal had merely shrugged, and accepted the arrangement. Not sure what sort of training they could do indoors, without incurring Brian’s ire, that was of course quite the provocative thought itself, a challenge to engage him until the truth was revealed. For he had been waiting a half hour already, as his pending company was worse than him when it came to time keeping. And at least once she had appeared to have forgotten that they’d arranged to meet at all !

So it was that Nal was idling around and switching chairs every few minutes, to amuse himself while he waited. He checked every so often too for any sign or sound of the Barracks Master, and therefore appeared even more suspicious than he ought to have had any need to.

When Ilisys entered, she glanced about the hall, and smiled. With the sort of pleasantly surprised expression which suggested she had half expected to find no one. All the same, she wandered over, a small pot in one hand and a middling but still rather bulging hessian sack in the other. Sitting at a chair which was close to a small table, she indicated with grey eyes that the young man ought cease his chair inspection and come join her. Three empty cups and the faint aroma of coffee did not bode well to keeping her friend’s attention, but at least he was alert.

When I was seven years old, my father gave me one of these,” the lady began, and gently tipped the contents of the small sack out all over the table. What appeared to be a vast array of splinters and small scraps of wood made what could only be called a mess. And the decision to unscrew the pot of what turned out to be glue .. proved that this was a woman who had not spent a lot of time entertaining small children. If Brian had come along at that moment, he likely would have lost his jaw to the floor. But as it was, Unalmis was allowed the time to gaze from the small collection, back to the enigmatic woman’s face in hope of some elusive clue, and then back to the mess again. He picked up a small piece of wood as Isys laid a purposeful flat tool across the top of the opened pot.

It’s err .. lovely,Nal commended her, dismissing mad ideas like fire building practice. Was this then some new thing to build, like one of the puzzle boxes his father made for him ? Ignoring the confused reaction, because lets face it, she was used to those by now, Isys retrieved a small folded piece of paper from her pocket and proceeded to unfold it into a much larger piece of paper .. with a complicated illustration laid out on it. Nal picked up the few tiny pieces of wood which had fallen down to the floor, as Isys took string and maybe a small handkerchief out of her other pocket. When all had been laid out, ready, the young man awaited for the explanation he hoped would soon follow. As he had no idea what she was up to now.

It’s a ship,” the Belfalasian informed him, and a frown betrayed the young man’s disbelief. “At least it will be when we have finished constructing it,” she finally explained. And then took the small piece of wood which Nal was examining out of his hand and set it back upon the table. And then placed both of her own hands sedately on her lap. “That is the design,” a gentle shift of the woman’s head, indicated the piece of complicated looking paper. And a breath of astounded air blew out of one side of the young man’s mouth. “The best way to understand the architecture of a ship is to build one. You will become accustomed to where things are, and why. We shall explore how each piece works in relation to another, and which areas are most vulnerable to attack and other damage, and so forth. It is no substitute for the real thing of course. But it is something.

As Nal leaned back in his seat and quietly scrutinised the sight of such a project, it was hard to not walk away and call for the woman to be committed. But .. he was not one to walk away from a challenge. Which training with the Ehtyar had often been, for both of them. So he sighed, and pulled the plans over to take a better look.

When you were .. seven ?" he wasn't sure if he had heard that correctly.

But Isys gave him a doubt-free "Yes. I will help you." It had been a wonderful experience and time that she had spent with her father. It had not been accomplished overnight though, not by any means. But she had found it far more fascinating than her needlework, much to her mother's consternation.

"Alright. So where do we start ?" Nal resolved, missing the sight of the woman’s smile, as she sat up and moved in her seat to better show what he needed to see. And so another day of the most unexpected types of preparing .. began.

@Rillewen FYI

Someone who looks like a ranger
Ranger Stables - In the wee hours of January 18th

This wasn't the first time she'd found a way into the Sixth Circle without being stopped or turned back. This wasn't the first time she'd crept along its streets in the earliest hours of the morning, several hours yet before dawn. When all but those who were tasked with duties, were asleep in their beds. When the chances of being spotted where the smallest.

This time, however, she didn't wait for a certain young ranger to leave the barracks and head to the training area behind the headquarters and armoury building. This time, she went for the stables.

The Hand had made it clear that her mistake was Urion was not solely that she had targeted the wrong man. Of course - that was the main issue. But another issue had been that the mugging and murder she had staged, was still very obviously a murder. It was borderline acceptable - but the Hand was expecting something better. Something more refined. Something that would be questioned less, if at all. With Urion, it was one thing. A random musician who'd run into some of the worst luck. But Trastion... Trastion was a ranger. His mentor was the ranger lieutenant. Jade definitely needed something much more 'accidental' than a random robbery and murder.

But... she had been running out of ideas to stage an accident.

The training accident failed. The drink accident failed.

But she had noticed Trastion was doing a lot of riding lately. More than usual. He wasn't just riding that one horse anymore. She'd seen him, with or without others, riding no less than four different horses lately. Ever since the ranger captain and lieutenant had been absent from the city, in fact. And given Trastion was training so closely under the lieutenant, Jade assumed one of the horses he was riding would be hers. She hadn't watched the Lieutenant the way she'd watched Trastion, however. She wasn't sure which horse was hers. But that didn't matter. She'd seen the horses he'd been riding lately. And one of them was much bigger than the others. And thus way more likely to cause a faulty strap to snap off completely. With all that muscle, moving around and bulking in case it startled...

And that was her next gambit.

The stables were, as expected at this hour, empty. Stable duties would only start hours from now. And since they were 'securely' located on the Sixth, there was no 24-hour guard posted there. Jade smirked as she slipped inside. The horses were asleep. She moved like a ghost, checking every stall until she found the horse she was looking for. Then she checked the number on the stall. And went looking for the corresponding tack.

***

When she slipped back out of the stables, she made sure to blend into the shadows. At least one thing about each and every one of her attempts had been true, so far: she had never gotten caught. And that was something to be grateful for.

She found her way to a spot not from from the gate down to the Fifth - because that was where the height difference was small enough to scale the wall up and down again. That area had always been her entry and exit point. It was almost funny how unwatched that portion of the wall was. At least, when the guards were occupied at the gate itself. And all it took to find a good opportunity, then, was someone else coming through. This time, however, it was a worrying long time before the right distraction presented itself. For dawn was close, and that would make her exit far more dangerous.

Jade managed her exit, in the end, before first light would make her all too easy to spot. Her heart was beating wildly as she clung to the shadows of the Fifth, waiting for a more reasonable hour to find her way down the rest of the circles of the city.

Trainee Trastion Leithor
Ranger Stables - Late afternoon of January 18th

Trastion was tired as he saddled the horses. Eryn was helping as much as her schedule allowed, but there were three extra horses to exercise, and he was still trying to keep with his regular routine with Lightning, with whom he had formed a bond. That meant that he was still getting up before dawn, spending some time with his sword training, then taking Lightning out for a while, when it was still early. Then, he’d come back, do some duties or training or whatever was on his schedule for the day, and when Eryn had finished with her healer training for the day, they’d take Narsule and the northern ranger’s horses out for a while. Sometimes, Eryn brought her little cousin Berion along to ride the extra, but other times, they’d take two horses for a ride, and bring the extra along without a rider. Or, sometimes, Eryn would also join him for a second ride, using her horse Buttercup while Trastion rode whichever still needed riding.

That, along with grooming and other care needs, was a lot to keep up with along with his other duties, which had been a bit intense today. So, while he would normally take time to inspect the tack when he was gearing up the horse, Trastion was pretty tired by the time he was readying the horses for the afternoon ride. He put Narsule’s saddle on and cinched it loosely, for now. He’d tighten it the rest of the way, just before mounting. Next, he saddled Gaeroch. Eryn had said that she’d get Berion to join them, today. He didn’t always get to come, because the boy sometimes had chores or some homework to finish, but today was a weekend. He would surely be able to come, this time, which meant that they could only do one ride, rather than two.

Trastion left Mael unsaddled, for Eryn. Because she didn’t use saddles, and that was fine with Trastion. That much less for him to do. Once he had all three horses ready to go, he took all their lead ropes in hand, with enough slack for them to follow him without crowding too close to one another. Then he set off down through the circles and out through the main gate. Eryn and Berion would be waiting at the end of their road, so he would walk until that point.

Trainee Trastion Leithor
Ranger Stables - Evening of January 18th
(Continued from here)

Trastion moved a little stiffly as he dismounted from Gaeroch out in the stable yard. He led the horses the rest of the way inside, with a very slight limp in his left leg. He petted the mare gently for a moment before he began loosening the girth strap. As he lifted the saddle off, he cringed when he found that his shoulder felt a bit sore, but it wasn't unmanageable. With a little grunt, he carried the saddle into the tack room. Then he came back and took some time brushing her down. Cleaned her hooves. Gave her a little treat, and guided her into her stall.

Then he spent a bit of time doing the same grooming routine with Mael, and put her into her stall. Then, he turned to Narsule. He reclaimed his belt, to begin with. Then he put the saddle in the tack room, for now. He'd deal with the repairs tomorrow, since he'd have to talk to Cali about getting a new billet strap for it. Hopefully, it wouldn't be difficult. He brushed Narsule down just as he'd done the other two horses, cleaned his hooves, and gave him a treat. "That was close today, wasn't it?" He asked softly, rubbing his nose lightly while he happily munched on the piece of apple.

Trastion's heart had stopped pounding, and he didn't feel shaky anymore, but he was still thinking about what bad luck he was having the last couple of weeks. He took out his medallion and ran a finger over the emblem. "Good luck, huh? Seems like I'm having nothing but bad luck lately," He muttered, shaking his head slightly. He sighed, then tucked it under his shirt again. "Well. Good night, Narsule." He took a moment to give all three horses some food. "Enjoy your supper, guys." He'd be going to his own supper now, then go straight to bed. Hopefully, his bad luck would turn around soon.
